<p>Jasprit Bumrah bowled brilliantly as he sent back Australia opener Mitchell Marsh back for a duck in India's opening game of the ODI World Cup 2023 in Chennai on Sunday (October 8). Former India skipper Virat Kohli also played his part as he took a brilliant catch in the slips to support the bowler.</p>

<p>Indian seamers, Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, had started well by keeping the lines tight and not giving any room to the Aussie batters to free their arm. In the third over of the innings Bumrah came on to bowl to Marsh and sent a length ball outside off. The Aussie batter edged it to the slips while trying to defend and Kohli did rest of the work. <p>Returning star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell stunned India with his four-wicket haul as Australia beat hosts by 66 runs in the final ODI, avoiding a series whitewash. Mitchell Marsh and the rest of the top order clicked with the bat as Australia posted a daunting 352 for seven batting first. A sensational spell by Maxwell helped Australia break India’s winning streak.</p>

<p>Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Australia got off to a flyer. Marsh and David Warner added 78 for the first wicket, with Warner completing his fifty during the stand. Even his dismissal couldn’t put brakes on Australia’s innings as Marsh took over the aggressor’s role and slammed Indian bowlers to all parts of the ground.</p>

<p>Though he departed for a well-made 96, including 13 fours and three sixes, the fifties from the batters to follow kept India silent throughout. Jasprit Bumrah impressed in his second spell but conceded joint-most runs in an ODI game, 81 off ten overs, picking three wickets.&nbsp;</p>

Notably, Cummins made a comeback to the side in the first ODI after suffering injury in Ashes series. Apart from him, all-rounder Mitchell Marsh also did not feature in Australia's final XI which saw three changes in total.</p>

<p>All-rounder Marcus Stoinis was also left out from the team as Australia included Alex Carey, Josh Hazlewood and handed a debut fast bowler Spencer Johnson.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bumrah was a part of the Indian squad against arch-rivals Pakistan on Saturday. He played 14 balls and scored 16 runs but did not get to bowl, which everyone was looking forward to, as Pakistan were unable to bat due to heavy rain. As a result, the match was abandoned with both teams sharing a point each.</p>

<p>The Mumbai Indians pacer made his international comeback after almost a year as he was recovering from his back injury.&nbsp;</p>

As per the latest reports, fully-fit Bumrah is said to have headed home midway into the tournament after taking BCCI’s permission and will return ahead of the Super Four stage if India manages to qualify. Though no official word on the same is out, reports suggest Bumrah returned home due to some personal reasons.</p>

<p>His absence means India will bring another specialist, Mohammed Shami, into the side for the must-win game. Shami, who spearheaded India’s pace attack across formats in Bumrah’s absence since last September, was benched for the marquee clash against Pakistan as the team management decided against playing three pacers. Instead, they opted for a bowling all-rounder, Shardul Thakur, in the XI.</p>

<p>Bumrah missed all cricket action since September last year due to a back injury and even underwent surgery in New Zealand. Upon attaining full fitness, Bumrah returned to the cricketing setup during the three-match Ireland T20Is, where he captained the white-ball side for the first time.</p>

<p>His exploits against the Irish side saw him returning to the ODI team for the Asia Cup. Although he didn’t get to bowl in India’s first game against Pakistan in Kandy, as rain washed out the match after India’s first innings, Bumrah would now miss the second match against Nepal and would return ahead of India’s first Super Four stage match (if they qualify) – scheduled for September 10 in Colombo.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The weather forecast suggests more than 80% rain chances on Monday in Pallekele.</p>

The match will take place in Kandy and is expected to be an enthralling battle between the two arch-rivals. <p>Ahead of the face-off, many former cricketers have shared their take on the mother-of-all-clashes. Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden has also joined the bandwagon and advised Indian captain Rohit to start cautiously against Shaheen Afridi -- who got the better of him in the 2021 T20 World Cup -- and also picked the winner of the clash.</p>

<p>On Star Sports' Game Plan, Hayden said, "India is playing against Pakistan’s pace trio. Well, I can tell you this is one of the spiciest competitions on the planet. We’ve got Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem. Three very different types of bowlers and unique bowlers which require unique plans from Team India. <p>The return of ace Indian seamer Jasprit Bumrah to the white-ball setup has bolstered the bowling attack ahead of the much-anticipated India-Pakistan game in Pallekele, Kandy, on September 2. <p>Shami, India’s most experienced seamer off all three, admitted the Indian Team missed Bumrah in the past year.</p>

<p>"For a long time, we didn't have Jassi (Bumrah), so we felt the loss of a good player like him. You sometimes feel like 'I wish this player was there', to make your combination set."</p>

<p>"So having Jassi, especially in the white-ball format, has made our bowling very strong. He's looking fit and he's playing well, hopefully, we have a good Asia Cup," Shami said.</p>

<p>Shami, who has played 90 ODIs, picking 162 wickets, is among a handful of bowlers who is a threat with both new and old ball. Known to be a better Test bowler, mainly for his ability to reverse swing, Shami said he doesn’t have an ego about his bowling, remaining keen to deliver for the team whenever asked.</p>

<p>"I don't have any hesitancy to bowl with the new ball or the old ball. I don't have an ego like that. All three of us (Bumrah, Shami &amp; Siraj) are bowling very well, so it depends on the management on who will play," Shami told Star Sports ahead of the Asia Cup.</p>

<p>"Depends on whether I have the new ball or whether the team requires me at any stage during the match, I'm always on," said India's best exponent of swing bowling in current times,” the right-hand seamer added.</p>

<h2>Bowling in the right area is the only plan</h2>

<p>When asked about his plans to replicate his heroics in white-ball cricket the way he does with the red, Shami said sticking to bowling in the right areas will only bring success irrespective of the format.</p>

<p>"There is too much talk about the white ball or red ball, if you bowl in the right areas, I don't think that there is any difficulty in any ball," Shami said</p>

<p>"There is only one goal, to go and give 100%, the result will come running to us if we give our 100%. So, it is very important to focus and execute, it's a very simple plan," he added.</p>
