Answering all the questions ahead of the 1st T20I against Ireland, Bumrah said he kept his eyes and ears open during his recovery period and revealed even during his rehab, he doesn’t use to train for the T20Is, but for the mega event in World Cup.

"We were mindful of the fact there is no Test cricket till the ODI World Cup. In my rehab as well, I was not preparing for a T20 game. I was always preparing for the World Cup competition," Bumrah said in a pre-match presser on Thursday.

Considering India will not play any Tests till December 2023, Bumrah worked on his recovery accordingly. He said he was bowling 10-15 overs during the rehab to feel okay while returning to the 50-over format.

"I have been bowling 10, 12 and even 15 overs. So, I have bowled more overs, that way it becomes easier when less bowling is required. We kept that in mind that we are preparing for one-day competition and not a four-over competition. I have lots of overs under my belt. You have to keep working your way up. From where you left, you are are little down and you keep working your way up," he added.

<h2>‘I am returning without expectations’</h2>

Though the whole of India was hoping for Bumrah to return in time for the World Cup 2023, the seamer himself said he has no expectations, and that he just wishes to enjoy his cricket and deliver for the team.

"I don't really think about expectations. I just want to go enjoy the game as I have come after a long break. Never been away from the game this long. I am coming back to enjoy as I love this game," Bumrah said.

What led the Men in Blue to lift the trophy after 28 years? Team performance. Batters, bowlers, fielders – everyone putting ahead their team spirit&nbsp;and delivering on the biggest stage.

Twelve years later, Rohit Sharma’s Indian team has the same aim to accomplish, but going by the recent records, especially in the ICC tournaments since 2013 – it is clear that India, despite starting as favourites for the nth time, still has many flaws to iron out.

So, what’s that one area the team management, the captain, and even fans are worried about? Batting? No, India has enough masterclass. The lower-order? Again no - thanks to the rise of Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja as batters, the Indian team has checked that box too. So, that leaves the Indian team with the bowling department.

So, what’s this curious case of Jasprit Bumrah and his injuries? 

The premier seamer is out of action since September last year. After playing against Australia in the home T20Is – just ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia, Bumrah injured his back, and much to everyone’s disappointment in the dressing room, and outside of it too, he got ruled out for an indefinite period.

Earlier, he also missed the 2022 Asia Cup in Dubai, and ironically, India failed to win both tournaments. More so, during the T20 World Cup, in the semis against England, India lost the match by 10 wickets.

Following that, India toured Bangladesh, and hosted Sri Lanka&nbsp;and New Zealand for short white-ball series, before playing Australia in the home 2023 Border-Gavaskar series; and in all of those series, Bumrah was out of contention for selection. His injury also caused him to miss the 2023 IPL for Mumbai Indians.

As things stand, Bumrah underwent back surgery in New Zealand and is currently completing his rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Considering his sensitive back issue, neither the staff at NCA, the board nor the team management will rush him into playing competitive cricket.

It leaves us with the thought:&nbsp;would Bumrah be able to make it in time for the 50-over World Cup?

In the best-case scenario, he probably will; however, in the worst case, he just won’t, and if he doesn’t, how is the Indian team going to fare without him?

In all practicality, the Indian team must start chalking out players and plans, as a contingency measure, if an untimely injury rules Bumrah out of the 2023 World Cup.

To begin with, what are the options? The new ball bowlers aren’t there in abundance, and even if there are a few, some are nursing injuries, or some are out of form.

Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj are two outright seamers India will go ahead with in the 2023 World Cup. Arshdeep Singh, the young left-arm seamer, who collected praises for his superb show in the T20 World Cup last year, could also get a nod, while the management might look into injury-hit Deepak Chahar as well.

In another scenario, if somehow experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar remains fit and finds form to push his case for selection, he wouldn’t be a bad option either.

Meanwhile, as the third seamer, Kashmir-express Umran Malik is the front-runner to bag that spot. The others who could also fight for that particular place in the team are Prasidh Krishna, who is also out due to an injury, Avesh Khan, someone who has impressed with his wicket-taking ability and not to forget the bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur. With so many options under their belt, the team management mustn’t find it hard to pick the best bowling unit for the World Cup, barring Jasprit Bumrah.

Although none can match Bumrah’s level or what he brings to the table – especially his ability to bowl Yorkers consistently, add some lovely in-swingers to that; trying to groom someone else to do at least half of what he does might benefit India in the longer run.

While the BCCI, the captain, the coach and everyone going to keep a keen eye on Bumrah’s health status, somewhere at the back of their minds, the thought of having their worst fears come true could prove troublesome.

For India to script history this time and bring the trophy home, they will want to put the best foot forward in each department and further hope that the tentative players slated for the World Cup are far away from any injury, especially Jasprit Bumrah.

“If you have a small injury, you would play in IPL if it’s an important game. At this stage, the cricket board has to understand how much cricket they should play. That is the bottom line. If today, you have resources, money, but you don’t have three or five-year calendars, there’s something wrong with the cricket board there,” Kapil Dev added.

Needing to chase 140 runs, India started brightly with Yashasvi Jaiswal (24) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (unbeaten 19) as they put an opening stand of 46 runs. Rain was always going to be a big factor in the contest as there was a yellow alert before the contest. India lost Jaiswal and Tilak Varma (0) in quick succession with rain coming down heavily. Interestingly, India were just two runs better than the par DLS score with the match eventually put to a halt in the same over.

After losing Jaiswal and Varma on the second and third ball respectively of the seventh over, the match was halted at 6.5 overs with India at 47/2. As a result, India were fortunate to have bagged the win as another loss of wicket would have handed Ireland the first blood.

<h2>What happened in Ireland’s innings?</h2>

Earlier, batting first Ireland had a miserable start as Bumrah struck twice in the first over to break the back of Ireland’s batting unit. The 29-year-old Bumrah justified his return to the squad as he got the better of Andrew Balbirnie on the second ball of the innings. Interestingly, the batter had scored a four on the first ball of the innings but was undone on the second ball as Bumrah castled him. The Indian skipper was not done yet as he then got the better of wicketkeeper Lorcan Tucker for a duck in the same over as India asserted their dominance in the contest.

Ireland then lost&nbsp;more wickets as debutant Prasidh Krishna and Ravi Bishnoi scalped two wickets each. Arshdeep Singh also got a wicket before the hosts mounted a mini-comeback.

Despite being 31/5, Ireland managed to score 139/7 in 20 overs as Barry McCarthy’s 51 off 33 and Curtis Campher’s 39 off 33 helped the team reach the triple-figure mark. Mark Adair also contributed 16 runs to the Ireland total.

The two sides will next meet on Sunday, August 20 as India could seal the series with a win while Ireland will hope to level at 1-1. The final contest of the series will be played on Wednesday, August 23.

When detailed about why there is a delay in the squad announcement, the source said because the status of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer remains unclear, the selection committee is waiting for them to play a practice match so they can take a call on the final 15.&nbsp;

Though Rahul will get picked, Iyer is said to be away from attaining full fitness.&nbsp;

"Rahul is by and large fit and is 'keeping wickets too, while Shreyas Iyer (operated for a back injury) is still not 100%. Both have taken part in match simulations at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore and will play a practice match soon. The fitness of the players who are back from the West Indies tour will also be assessed by the team and NCA's physios. Hence the delay in naming the team," the source said.&nbsp;

Having already missed a lot of action since September last year&nbsp;when he got ruled out of cricket for an indefinite period due to a reoccurring back injury, Bumrah must look into his training and try and get more match practice as possible to be ready for the bigger challenge.

Speaking with IANS, former seamer Balaji said,&nbsp;"With the full fitness already being reached, I am sure that the build-up to the bowling workload at the NCA after surgery would have already given them a lot of confidence and body conditioning. So, it is about match rhythm now, and you need to be 100% sure about how you go about match day, post-match recovery and following day how your training is.”&nbsp;

<h2>‘Important to listen to body demands’</h2>

Balaji, who also suffered the same fate during his career that saw his game time cut down due to similar back issues, said he listened to his body and that worked in his favour.

Speaking on how Bumrah and Krishna must take care of their bodies going forward, Balaji said both must follow the same path and listen to the demands of their bodies.

"Both of them have played a lot of cricket, and aren't young anymore in international cricket. So, they know how their body reacts. I had my own routines when I had the surgery and then came back to cricket. I really invested and listened to the body more closely than before, according to the demands."

"Personally, after undergoing surgery, it's very important to listen to your body and its demands on a particular day. Plus, one has to ramp up their fitness levels to meet the demand of international cricket. Psychologically, you will have a lot of doubts, like when you are resuming your bowling action and how the body will react. So, they will have to progress very, very cautiously over a period of time," he added.

Both seamers are likely to play all three games in Ireland as they eye spots in India’s Asia Cup and World Cup squads.

<h2>Bumrah’s last captaincy stint</h2>

The Ireland series won’t be the first time Bumrah leads the Indian side.&nbsp;He was India’s captain for the final Test match against England last year at Edgbaston after Rohit Sharma was ruled out due to COVID-19. Bumrah’s side lost the Edgbaston Test but gave him a good learning experience. He will be eager to lead the Indian team to glory having overcome a back injury. He was in New Zealand earlier in the year to have surgery and is hopeful of a successful return to the international circuit.

As things stand, Sitanshu Kotak and Sairaj Bahutule will be part of the support staff that will travel to Ireland.

Dravid and other first-team coaching staff including Paras Mhambrey will take a break before they join the national side for the Asia Cup which is scheduled to start at the end of the month in Sri Lanka for India. The coaching staff will leave for India immediately after the current leg of the West Indies tour is over. The entire team is in the US for the final two T20Is against West Indies where India trail by 1-2.

Hussain further opined that the Indian team will become a more formidable unit once Jasprit Bumrah achieves full fitness. So, they've got those senior players and youngsters, and with the ball in India, those three all-rounders, and they are genuine all rounders in India - Axar (Patel), (Ravindra) Jadeja and (Ravichandran) Ashwin. That, for me, is a really balanced side because then you've got a No.7."

It's a difficult job, somebody has to be experienced over there."

“It depends on how the injury is and the sort of expectations he has. I think he will be fine since he is a quality bowler. The layoff will help him, I think. Fast bowlers need that layoff and time to get the strength back in their bodies. It depends on the work he has done off the field, how his back is and if he has done anything to his action. I think he has been there before and he has achieved it,” McGrath said in a media interaction at the MRF Pace Foundation academy in Chennai on Monday, August 7.

Eleven months is a long time out of the game, but if you are coming off an off-season and you want to get into it, hopefully, that only takes a few games. Back when I played, we had an off-season. A break of two or 11 months doesn't make much of a difference. It's just about getting back into the swing," McGrath added.

As for Bumrah's next series, he'll be captaining the side in absence of Rohit Sharma. The three-T20I series against the European nations starts from August 18.

According to McGrath, Bumrah can prolong his career if he changes his regime and gives up on one format.

The way he bowls, his run-up, and his delivery stride are very unique. But his bowling action and the way he goes about it does put a lot of stress on his body, so he needs to stay strong. If he does that, he can play for quite a few years for India," McGrath told Sportstar. Sharing his views on the squad, Harbhajan said in a video on his YouTube channel, "Jasprit Bumrah has made a comeback. He was injured for a long time and his return was awaited. Jasprit Bumrah is all set to return to competitive cricket after a gap of nearly 11 months, having last played for India during the Australia series in September last year. India’s premier seamer suffered a back injury and missed all the action that followed, including the World T20 in Australia, the away Bangladesh series, the home season and the IPL 2023 for Mumbai Indians.

Team India missed Bumrah in the all-important World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia as Rohit Sharma-led side lost the second successive final, this time by 209 runs.

Bumrah underwent back surgery in March this year, and was undergoing rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru alongside KL Rahul, Prasidh Krishna and Rishabh Pant.

Upon attaining complete fitness as per guidelines laid by NCA medical staff, Bumrah was expected to be included in the side for the Asia Cup, which starts on August 30 (in Sri Lanka and Pakistan). He will now lead the pace attack in Ireland. The Indian Team will play three T20Is, beginning August 18.

While the Indian Team is in the Caribbean for the white-ball leg that ends with the final T20I in Florida on August 13, the selection committee will name the squad for Ireland T20Is this week.

<h2>Expect changes in World Cup schedule, says Shah</h2>

BCCI secretary Jay Shah also said that, upon accepting requests from several countries regarding logistics, the 2023 World Cup schedule will see some change happening. After consulting with the ICC, the revised schedule will be announced soon.

"There is a possibility there could be a few changes in the schedule. Several Full Member countries have written in requesting to change two or three dates in the schedule. We are working it out with the ICC, and we should be able to clear it in two or three days,” Jay Shah said.
