Palestine statehood recognition merely for show? What will change, what might not, for Palestinians on the ground

Prime Minister Keir Starmer will announce on Sunday (Sep 21) that Britain is formally recognising a Palestinian state, according to multiple UK media reports. The decision marks a historic policy shift that has already drawn fierce opposition from Israel. Britain has long been one of Israel's closest allies, but its position changed as Israel's war in Gaza escalates. The offensive, launched after Hamas's October 7, 2023, attack, has left vast destruction, tens of thousands dead, and the United Nations warning of famine.
Why now?
According to reports, Starmer first signalled the change in July. Back then, he said that the UK would recognise Palestinian statehood if Israel failed to take "substantive steps" towards a ceasefire with Hamas before the UN General Assembly convened in September. He argued that recognition would make a "contribution to a proper peace process, at the moment of maximum impact for the two-state solution."Also read | Trump slams US media, calls negative coverage 'illegal' after Jimmy Kimmel show suspension stirs free speech debateNow, Downing Street officials say the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with images of mass suffering and starvation, has made the case for recognition unavoidable. Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez wants Israel to be barred from international sports over Gaza war

Iran's Supreme Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei urged all nations, particularly those with Islamic majorities, to end their commercial and political relations with Israel in order to ‘confront its catastrophic crimes.’ He said that continuing any form of cooperation with “the Zionist regime” is unacceptable in light of ongoing events. Khamenei's remarks were shared on his X profile after he met with the president and members of the cabinet on Sunday (Aug 7). According to him, the Muslim world must take a united and firm stand, using diplomatic and economic means to pressure Israel. He explained that cutting off trade and political ties is a necessary step toward supporting the Palestinian cause and showing solidarity with the oppressed. Khamenei stressed that silence or inaction would be seen as complicity, and he called on governments to reflect the will of their people, who are outraged by the situation. Meanwhile, he also praised Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's recent trip to China, stating that it “laid the groundwork for major developments, both economically and politically.”

"The Leader said the Zionist entity is committing numerous crimes and astonishing catastrophes without any sense of shame. Although these crimes are carried out with the support of a power like the United States but the way to confront this situation is not closed,” Ayatollah Khamenei added. Khamenei also described Israel as the “most isolated and hated” regime in the world and stated that one of the main lines of Iran’s diplomacy should be urging other nations to cut political and commercial ties with the criminal regime, reported Press TV. Khamenei's remark came amid Israel's intensified offensive against Gaza. "The enemy wants to impose a 'no war, no peace' situation on Iran," Ali Khamenei said in a meeting with President Masoud Pezeshkian and his cabinet members in Tehran. "One of the harms and dangers facing the country is precisely this state of 'no war, no peace,' which is not good." Khamenei also said that the Iranian government has a responsibility to strengthen the nation's core pillars of power and dignity. He identified key elements such as national unity, motivation, hope, and public spirit as essential, urging that these be actively nurtured through both words and actions. He warned against allowing these values to erode. Additionally, he called on the administration to focus on improving the country’s economic conditions and the well-being of its citizens. Khamenei also stressed the importance of fostering a strong work ethic and a hopeful outlook, urging the government to move beyond a stagnant state of “neither war nor peace.”

Amid Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu's Gaza takeover plan, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar on Sunday (Sep 7) said that the ongoing war could end if Hamas releases all the hostages and gives up arms. The statement came a day after Hamas reiterated its long-standing position that it would free all hostages if Israel agreed to an end to the war. Saar was speaking during a press conference with his Danish counterpart in Jerusalem. Amid the UN-declared famine in Gaza, Israeli troops have intensified bombings and operations in the area. This was mainly after the Israeli cabinet approved Netanyahu's Gaza takeover plan. However, Netanyahu has stressed that Israel had “established another humanitarian zone to allow the civilian population in Gaza to move to a safe area.” Meanwhile, the Israeli army issued a fresh evacuation order on Sunday for a residential tower in Gaza City ahead of a planned bombing of the high-rise building. A day earlier, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz shared a video of its army destroying a high-rise block in Gaza City. Additionally, the Israeli military said that it “destroyed an underground route hundreds of meters long” in the northern Gaza Strip that was used by Hamas “to coordinate terrorist operations against our forces.”

Israeli PM Netanyahu said forces are intensifying operations in Gaza, targeting Hamas militants linked to the Oct 7 attack. FM Gideon Saar warned that recognising Palestine at the UN could harm talks. Hamas offered to release hostages if Israel ends the war and withdraws from Gaza.

After the Palestinian militant group Hamas released a new video showing two Israeli hostages pleading for help, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke at length with the parents of hostages Guy Gilboa-Dalal and Alon Ohel. He reiterated his support for them in light of the cruel propaganda video released by Hamas. "No evil propaganda video will weaken us or divert us from our determination to achieve these goals," Netanyahu said. This came after the Israeli Defence Minister, Israel Katz, warned of escalation into the war in Gaza. As Israel moves to intensify its offensive in Gaza, Hamas warned Israel on Friday (Aug 18) that its military operations in the region would subject hostages to the “same risks” the militant group’s “fighters” are facing. In a key statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that his country has no intention of annexing Gaza. He said, “We want Gaza to be taken over by a governing body. Asked about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, he pointed out, “The humanitarian crisis was caused by Hamas in Gaza.” Highlighting the strong ties between the two nations, the PM said he would like to come to India again to deepen diplomatic and strategic cooperation.
Israeli equipment in Operation Sindoor?
Asked about Trump's tariffs on India, he said, “Trump, Modi are terrific friends & have so much common ground. The PM emphasised the effectiveness of Israeli-supplied equipment, stating, “Israeli equipment given before worked well during Operation Sindoor,” and added, “Israeli equipment, used during Operation Sindoor, was battle-proven.” This underscores the robust defence partnership between the two nations, with the PM further noting, “India, Israel can work to deal with cross-border terror,” highlighting shared security interests. The PM also touched on global diplomacy, suggesting that former US President Donald Trump deserves a Nobel Prize for the Abraham Accords, reflecting Israel’s commitment to peace initiatives. Additionally, Israel’s interest in Indian workers was emphasised, with the PM stating, “Israel wants more Indian workers because they are ‘sensible’ and Israel is trying to remove hurdles.”
