BCCI secretary Jay Shah is optimistic about the IPL growing into a bigger brand and leapfrogging the likes of the English Premier League (EPL) and Major League Baseball (MLB) to become the second-most lucrative sporting league in the world behind only the National Football League (NFL) after the conclusion of the IPL&nbsp;media rights e-auction which got underway on Sunday (June 12).

IPL currently ranks as the fourth biggest sporting league in the world in terms of "per match broadcasting fees" behind NFL, EPL and the Major League Baseball. However, Shah expects the cash-rich T20 league to jump to the second spot after the IPL media rights auction for the 2023-27 cycle.

Shah revealed IPL was earning $9 million per match in the last five-year cycle with Disney Star securing the media rights of the tournament from 2018 to 2022. However, the BCCI secretary claimed the valuation will now jump to at least $12 million per game even if the rights are sold at the base price that has been set by the BCCI.

“At present, a National Football League game costs a broadcaster about $17 million, which is the highest for any sports league. That’s followed by the English Premier League, at $11 million and the Major League Baseball figure, too, is roughly the same. In the last five-year cycle, we got $9 million from one IPL game. This time, going by the present minimum base price that we have set, BCCI will get paid $12 million per IPL match. That’s a giant leap for Indian cricket on the world stage. We will be just behind NFL,” Shah was quoted as saying by The Indian Express in an interview.

Star had bought the IPL rights for the 2018-22 cycle for a sum of around USD 3 billion back then. However, the BCCI is expecting the amount to double this time around with a number of major contenders in the fray. The likes of Zee, Reliance, Sony, Star and SuperSport among others will be locking horns to secure the TV and the digital rights of the IPL for the next five-year cycle.

Amazon were also in the race to secure the digital rights of the tournament but ended up pulling out at the last moment. However, despite Amazon throwing in the towel, BCCI remains bullish on the media rights and expects the bidding war to cross the&nbsp;&nbsp;$7 billion mark.

The media rights have been divided into four separate packages - A, B, C and D. While package A consists of the television rights for the Indian subcontinent, package B consists of the digital rights for the Indian subcontinent. Explaining the idea behind introducing package C - which consists of weekend games and playoff matches, Shah said the BCCI wanted to increase the number of broadcasting partners this time around in order to also help cricket expand its reach.

“If we had done this conventionally, we would have only a limited number of participants. We introduced Package C because we wanted many players to participate in the tendering process. This helps cricket grow, we need to expand the game and this will help. If more players are in the fray, it will be good for the game,” Shah told the Indian Express. “They have seven broadcasting partners, we are looking at just three or four," he added citing NFL's example.

Umran Malik had made heads turn throughout the IPL 2022 edition. His raw pace, deadly yorkers and some tidy spells changed the complexion of the game in favour of Kane Williamson-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) before the one-time winners' group stage exit.

After a memorable IPL 2022 season, Umran is now part of India's T20I squad for the home series versus South Africa, which gets underway on June 09 in New Delhi. Before that, the 22-year-old revealed how SRH's bowling coach and legendary SA pacer Steyn had predicted his India call-up before IPL 2022.

"When I got selected for India, Dale sir (Steyn) was with me in the team bus. We were going for the match. Everyone congratulated me and Dale sir said, 'I told you before the IPL that you will get the India call-up after the season'. And that's exactly what happened, by the grace of god. My goal is to give my best for Team India now,” Malik said in the video shared by BCCI.

Speaking at the press conference ahead of the upcoming India-South Africa T20Is, which starts on June 09, Pretorius dwelled on the learnings from CSK skipper MS Dhoni. He revealed,&nbsp;"The biggest thing I learnt from him is how calm he is at the crease and how much he tries to take pressure off himself and put it onto the bowler. He made me realise that at the death, the batter isn't under more pressure, it's actually the bowler that is under more pressure."

"As a bowler, you can still lose the match if you have to defend 18 off the last three balls and as a batter you can win it. It was a fresh mindset. He doesn't get too excited. He doesn't get too down on himself. Anything is always possible and I love that about him. He is very optimistic. He believes he can do anything. I am going to try and bring that into my game: the calmness but also that self-belief that from any position, any game can be won," Pretorius added.

Speaking on CSK's disastrous run, where they failed to enter the playoffs for the second time in their rich history, Pretorius stated, "What was nice about the CSK franchise is that it is very experienced. We all understand that cricket doesn't always go your way. It's very important to just take the positives out of a bad season and try and build for a stronger future. It's all about building for the next year or three years and trying to make sure a bad season is not a complete loss."

Pretorius ended with six scalps from equal number of games, bowling in the powerplays and death overs, and also led the charge with the bat with a handy 28 in CSK's three-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI), at the DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai, in match 33 of IPL 2022.

He is currently part of South Africa's T20I squad for the five-match series versus hosts India.

Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh regrets slapping his former teammate S Sreesanth and said what happened between them was wrong and was a mistake on his part. The infamous slapgate row unfolded during the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008 and took the season by a storm. The infamous episode involved Harbhajan and Sreesanth, who were playing for Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) respectively.

The incident happened during a game between Punjab and Mumbai at the PCA Stadium in Mohali in IPL 2008. Mumbai Indians lost the game by 66 runs. Harbhajan was leading MI in the absence of regular skipper Sachin Tendulkar. He reportedly slapped Sreesanth after getting annoyed by his comments during the routine handshake between the two teams.

While the incident was not caught on camera and not aired by the official broadcaster, Sreesanth was later seen sobbing on the field. Harbhajan was handed a ban for five ODIs by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The board also launched an investigation into the matter.

Harbhajan had already apologised to Sreesanth on a few occasions in the past and recently opened up on the infamous incident once again during a chat with renowned cricketer presenter Vikram Sathaye and Sreesanth himself on Glance LIVE.

Gambhir has set up a kitchen in Delhi's Gandhi Nagar where the poor and needy can get meals at the cost of just Rs 1. Thousands of people get affordable meals from his kitchen every month. Gambhir said he pays for all of it from his own pocket and is not ashamed of working despite being a politician.

“Why I commentate in IPL or work in it is because I spend INR 25 lakh (INR 2.5 million) every month to feed 5000 people. This translates to roughly 2.75 crore (INR 27.5 million) per year. I've also spent INR 25 lakh to build a library," Gambhir said during the press conference.

“I spend all of this money from my own pocket and not from the MPLAD fund. The MPLAD fund doesn't run my kitchen or other things that I do. I don't have a tree in my house from where I can pluck money either.

Only because I work, am I able to feed those 5000 people or establish that library. I have no shame in saying that I do commentary and work in the IPL. All of this that I do has an ultimate goal,” he added.

Anthony was convinced by the pace displayed by a young Kuldeep and after hearing his financial situation, he waived off his training fees and took care of her diet and even got him a proper kit.

“When he first came to us, he had a good height, and he was able to bowl fast. It is difficult to understand someone’s strength at the age of around 12-13 years and as a result, we asked him to concentrate more on his bowling”, the former Madhya Pradesh U-19 fast bowler told WION.

While the pace was always there, Kuldeep’s game was not without his flaws. He ended up chucking the ball while looking to exert himself and it was ultimately rectified by a smart plan from Anthony.

“He was fond of bowling bouncers, but he ended up chucking sometimes. I did not allow him to go to any trials because of that reason and we kept working on his action till it got better,” he said.

With a better action and solid local pedigree, Kuldeep made his Ranji Trophy debut for Madhya Pradesh in 2018. It was a great season for him as he ended up taking 25 wickets in 8 matches and since then, he has featured quite regularly on the domestic circuit. However, IPL was still a distant dream and that was finally achieved in 2022 as RR picked him up for the base price of Rs 2 million.

The debut was everything that the young fast bowler could have hoped for and more. He started proceedings with a 146.3 kmph screamer to Lucknow opener Quinton de Kock and with 15 runs to defend in the final over, he was entrusted with the duty to clinch the game for his side. He kept his calm and against a seasoned veteran like Marcus Stoinis, he was able to guide his team to victory.

On his Youtube channel, Chopra said, "Along with him (Buttler), I have kept KL Rahul. I thought about Quinton de Kock and Shubman Gill but KL Rahul - more than 600 runs, two centuries. Once again eat, sleep and score 600 runs in the IPL. Form is temporary, KL Rahul is permanent."&nbsp;

Chopra further opined, "I had done a poll for No. 3 - Deepak Hooda or Rahul Tripathi. I have picked Rahul Tripathi, about 80% have also voted for Rahul Tripathi. After that, my Player of the Tournament, his name is Hardik Pandya - he is a captain, bowler and batter. He is the captain of this team as well." He asserted, "At No. 5, I have got Liam Livingstone. He is a six-hitting machine and has done amazingly well this year. At No. 6, some thinking was required on who could be kept - DK (Dinesh Karthik) could have been there but I have actually gone with David Miller because he has had a season that is one to remember."
