After a forgetful tour of South Africa, Virat Kohli's struggles with the willow have continued in the ongoing ODI series between India and West Indies at home. Questions have been raised over Kohli's form with many suggesting the former India captain should be asked to rest for a few games in order to find his mojo back.

Kohli was dismissed for a 4-ball 8 in the first ODI before scoring 18 off 30 balls in the second game. Though India managed to win both the games comfortably, Kohli didn't enjoy great outings on the personal front. While he has failed to bring an end to his century drought since 2019, Kohli's form has been under the scanner in the ongoing series.

Many have suggested Kohli should be rested for a few matches as he doesn't look in the right space of mind ever since being sacked as the ODI captain of the side. However, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes the former India skipper should not be asked to rest unless he himself demands a break.

"There has been a lot of talks that Kohli should be asked to rest, that you are not having a great time, take a break now also and if you like, don't play the T20s as well. I will never keep that proposal in front of Virat Kohli. It is fine if he himself says that he wants to take a break," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

The cricketer-turned commentator further added that every batter goes through a lean patch in his career and a legend like Kohli doesn't have to prove his credentials again after enduring slight bad form.

"You are talking about Virat Kohli. It does not happen that a legend does not remain a legend because of slight bad form. When you go through bad form, we all have gone through that more compared to Kohli, you want to play regularly at times. You don't want a break," Chopra added.

Rohit Sharma-led Team India lost the toss in the second and penultimate ODI, versus West Indies, at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad on Wednesday (February 8). Being asked to bat first, Rohit was accompanied by Rishabh Pant at the top, surprising many.

India dropped Ishan Kishan, with the return of vice-captain KL Rahul in the side, but surprised many with Pant coming out to bat with Rohit. Pant usually bats at No. 4, or lower down the order, for the Men in Blue. With Shikhar Dhawan not being available for selection after recovering from Covid-19, Indian team management dropped Ishan to make way for Rahul -- who now bats at No. 5 -- and promoted Pant up the order.

Reacting to India's experiment with Pant as an opener, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports on-air, "The first 10 overs is where India have been a bit slow in the past. They are looking to take advantage of the field restrictions in the first 10 overs. They are clearly looking to score maybe 60-70. That is what they are looking for. This is an experiment, make no mistake. If it works, that is the template that they will like to carry forward as they go on to the World Cup in India next year."

"It's something that will certainly look at. What it does also, if India are batting first, it will give him some time to recover. If he gets out in the 30th or 40th over, having done his job, he will get a little bit of break when he comes out to keep wickets."

Gavaskar further asserted, "It's may also they (the team management) is looking to give him a sense of responsibility at the top of the order. We have seen him charge down the pitch and get out in the past. Sending him up the order is a way of maybe telling him, listen we expect more runs from him. We will find out how it all pans out."

"Who is going to be the finisher? I was thinking maybe Pant will get that role with the license to throw his bat around at the end when he comes into bat in the last 10-15 overs, provided the team has got off a very good start," he added.

Talking about the match, Rohit & Co. didn't get off to a good start by losing three quick wickets. The home side's lower order have a lot riding on themselves to take the team score beyond 250.

Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj recently revealed what Virat Kohli had told him after his stellar show in India's Test series against Australia Down Under last year. India scripted history by defeating Australia 2-1 in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2021-22 to win a second straight Test series Down Under. India also breached Australia's fortress Gabba, handing them a humiliating defeat in the final Test to clinch the trophy.

It was an incredible turnaround from the Indian team in the four-match series after losing the first Test in Adelaide. India were bowled out for their lowest Test score in Adelaide and suffered a huge defeat but managed to bounce back and take the series despite missing a number of star players, including skipper Virat Kohli, who had returned home for the birth of his daughter after the conclusion of the first Test.

Ajinkya Rahane led the side in Kohli's absence and inspired India to an incredible turnaround as they went on to win the second Test and draw the third one before clinching the series-decider in Gabba to win their second straight Test series on Australian soil. Siraj, who made his Test debut in the same series, impressed with his impactful bowling.

Siraj was roped in as a replacement for injured Mohammed Shami after the first Test and produced some brilliant performances Down Under. In the final Test, in the absence of the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Shami and R Ashwin among others, Siraj led India's bowling attack and helped the visitors register one of their most memorable Test wins of all time.

Siraj finished with 13 wickets in three matches and was India's highest wicket-taker in the series. He recently revealed after the Australia Test series, Virat Kohli told him something that he would never forget in his career. Speaking on the RCB podcast, Siraj revealed how Kohli lauded him for his performances and told him no one will forget what he did for the Indian team in Australia.

"Virat Kohli told me something I'd never be able to forget. After returning from Australia, he said 'Miyan, well bowled, what you've done in Australia is unbelievable. Nobody will be able to forget what you've done there. Keep at it and keep your focus on fitness and keep putting in the hard work," Siraj said on the podcast.

Siraj has since gone on to become a regular for India across formats and has not looked back. His performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have also been superb and the fast bowler has been retained by his franchise RCB ahead of IPL 2022.

India got off to a winning start in the ongoing three-match ODI series against West Indies with a comfortable six-wicket win in the first ODI at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. The hosts will be locking horns with Kieron Pollard & Co. in the second ODI of the series on Wednesday and will be hoping to continue their winning run against the visitors.

Spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar were brilliant for India in the series-opener as the duo rattled the West Indies batting line up to pick up seven wickets between them. West Indies were bundled out for a paltry 176 runs in 43.5 overs before India chased down the target with as many as 22 overs to spare.

Captain Rohit Sharma, who was leading the Men in Blue in his first ODI as the full-time skipper of the Indian team, slammed a brilliant 51-ball 60 to get the hosts off to a good start before Suryakumr Yadav (34) and debutant Deepak Hooda (26) wrapped up the run-chase while remaining unbeaten.

It was a comfortable victory for India in the first ODI, however, a change is likely in the playing XI for the second ODI as KL Rahul is available for selection after missing the first game. The vice-captain had missed the series-opener due to personal reasons but is likely to return to the XI in the second game.

Rahul is likely to replace left-hand batter Ishan Kishan at the top as India would like to give Hooda more chances in the middle-order after his good show on debut. Kishan, who also looked in fine touch for his 28 off 36 balls, might have to make way for Rahul, who is unlikely to be slotted in the middle-order and will play as an opener.

Apart from Rahul replacing Kishan, India are unlikely to make any other change and will once again reply on the spin pair of Chahal and Sundar to continue their terrific run in the second game. Sundar is unlikely to be replaced by any other spinner as he offers a lot with the bat as well lower down the order.

On Sunday (February 6), Team India head coach Rahul Dravid was seen bowling at the nets to mark the 23rd anniversary of Anil Kumble's 10-wicket haul, which he claimed in an India-Pakistan Test match at New Delhi, India in 1999. Back then, the former Indian spinner Kumble became only the second bowler overall, and first Indian, to achieve ten wickets in an innings in the purest format.

Courtesy Kumble's 10 for 74, India dismissed Wasim Akram-led Pakistan for 207, in pursuit of 420, to win by 212 runs at the then known as Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, Delhi. Thus, Dravid also rolled his arms at the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team's net session ahead of their three-match ODI series opener versus West Indies, on February 6 in Ahmedabad.

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has now poked fun at Dravid's bowling. Bhajji hilariously advised Dravid to widen his grip as otherwise the ball won't spin much. Here's what he wrote:

Virat Kohli gave up Team India's captaincy altogether when he resigned as the Test skipper post the South Africa Tests, held early this year. Having been succeeded by Rohit Sharma as the limited-overs captain, Kohli was expected to return to his usual dominant best -- after a decent ODI series versus SA -- when Rohit-led India squared off with Kieron Pollard-led West Indies in the three-match ODI series opener, on Sunday (February 6), in Ahmedabad.

Kohli has had a good run in white-ball formats in the recent past. However, the 33-year-old has not been able to score a century in international cricket since 2019. His last ODI century came during India's tour of West Indies in August 2019. Thus, he was expected to go bonkers versus the Windies (against whom he averages 70.09) in the series opener but he fell for an eight-ball 4.

Ahead of the second and penultimate ODI, also to be held at the same venue; i.e. the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad, Kohli is on the cusp of joining icons Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh and Md Azharuddin in an elite list.

The 33-year-old Kohli will be playing his 100th ODI at home, 259th overall, on Wednesday (February 9) during the second and penultimate tie. Kohli's 100th ODI appearance on home soil will make him the 36th cricketer to achieve the special feat in the shorter format. Legendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away on Sunday (February 06), leaving the entire country mourning. One of the greatest singers of all time, she sang thousands of songs across several different languages and gave the Indian film industry some of its evergreen hits. Popularly known as the 'Nightingale of India', the music legend was also a huge cricket fan and one of the ardent supporters of the Indian cricket team.

Mangeshkar rarely used to miss a game when the Indian cricket team was in action and was a keen follower of the Men in Blue. She once even took to Twitter to request former India captain MS Dhoni to not think about retirement at a time when speculations were rife that Dhoni was ready to quit international cricket. The incident happened back in 2019 after India's exit from the ICC World Cup 2019.

India suffered a heartbreaking 18-run loss in the semi-final against New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup following which rumours spread that Dhoni was going to announce his retirement from international cricket. Mangeshkar then took to Twitter to urge the former India skipper to not do so stating that India needed his services in the game.

"Namaskar M S Dhoni ji.Aaj kal main sun rahi hun ke Aap retire hona chahte hain.Kripaya aap aisa mat sochiye.Desh ko aap ke khel ki zaroorat hai aur ye meri bhi request hai ki Retirement ka vichar bhi aap mann mein mat laayiye.@msdhoni (Hello, MS Dhoni ji. Over the years, Team India have excelled in the ODI format. As a result, they have won two ODI World Cup champions and have produced various superstar cricketers who have done wonders in the 50-over format.

On Sunday (February 6), Rohit Sharma-led India played their 1000th ODI; being the first-ever side to do so. During their landmark encounter, India beat Kieron Pollard-led West Indies by six wickets to make their 1000th appearance in the shorter format a memorable affair. Prior to the historic encounter, former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad revealed his all-time Indian ODI XI, featuring some superstar cricketers from the country.

Following the 2019 ODI World Cup, rift rumours between then skipper Virat Kohli and his white-ball deputy Rohit Sharma intensified. Kohli, however, rubbished all such claims before India's tour of West Indies in August, 2019.

The rift rumours died down for a bit after a few months before it again hit the headlines in early December, 2021. After Rohit took over from Virat as the limited-overs captain, many speculated that all isn't well between the two superstar cricketers. Nonetheless, Kohli once again shunned all such claims in his explosive presser, on December 15, before Team India's trip to South Africa.

After the India-West Indies three-match ODI series opener, held in Ahmedabad on Sunday (February 6), Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has slammed all such speculations seeing Rohit-Kohli's on-field chemistry versus Kieron Pollard & Co. Both the senior cricketers were seen discussing strategies and helping each other out in taking DRS calls.

Thus, Gavaskar told Star Sports after India's six-wicket win over the Windies, “Why wouldn't they be getting along? They are playing for India. All these talks that you generally hear about two players not gelling and etc. are all speculations. According to reliable sources or allegedly or reportedly. Nobody actually tells you and this has been happening for a years. And these guys don't even bother about it. You wouldn't even bother about these kind of speculations because you yourself know what the truth is. And so there is nothing."

“There are often speculations that the captain who is now a player in the team will not want the new captain to succeed. This is nonsense. Because if he doesn't score runs or a bowler doesn't pick wickets then he is going to be out of the team. He has already lost the captaincy or opted out of captaincy, now you don't contribute with the bat or ball then you are going to be out of the team. So all these talks are mere speculations from people who have nothing better to do and are trying and creating stories. So don't you worry. Today Kohli didn't get runs but he will get runs whether he is playing under Rohit Sharma or any other captain.”

Rohit Sharma-led Team India began their home season with a bang. Playing the Kieron Pollard-led West Indies in the three-match ODI series opener, Rohit & Co. thrashed the visitors by six wickets at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad to go 1-0 up.

At the post-match presentation after India's stunning six-wicket win, Rohit said, "I don't believe in perfect game. You cannot be perfect. We want to keep getting better. All in all a great effort from everyone. We ticked all boxes. Pretty happy with that. With that bat we could've finished with not so many wickets, that is one. Could also have created pressure on their lower order. Don't want to take any credit away. The way we bowled upfront and then towards the back end was good to see. We want to keep getting better as a team. The end goal is we should be able to achieve what the team wants. If the team requires us to do something different, have to do it. Don't think we have to change a lot. All I ask from players is to keep challenging themselves. I've been off for a while, haven't played for two months but I was back home hitting the balls. Knew there was a long season ahead. Had a good net session here. I was confident going into this game. Can take a lot of positives from this game. The pitch had something in it. There was softness in the pitch early on. In this particular game the toss became important. But honestly want to take the toss away from the play, don't want to depend on it a lot. But if you do, you have to take advantage."

But if you do, you have to take advantage." The second and penultimate ODI will be held at the same venue on Wednesday (February 09).

Throwback: When Lata Mangeshkar fasted for MS Dhoni-led India's CWC'11 semi-final win vs Pakistan

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra feels Virat Kohli doesn't look in the right frame of mind amidst his struggle with the willow. Kohli has been far from his best in his recent outings for the Indian team and has failed to attain the consistency that he was once known for. The former India skipper endured yet another batting failure in the first ODI against West Indies on Sunday.

On Sunday, India were asked to chase a moderate target of 177 runs in the first ODI against West Indies after spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar ran riot with the ball. Opening the innings with Ishan Kishan, skipper Rohit Sharma got India off to a flying start. Rohit slammed a 51-ball 60 and added 84 runs for the first wicket with Ishan (28).

Kohli came out to bat at number three after Rohit dismissal. The stage was set for the batting maestro to take control of the run-chase and take India home comfortably. However, Kohli managed a short stay out in the middle as he was dismissed by pacer Alzarri Joseph after scoring 8 runs off just 4 balls.

Chopra reckoned Kohli was in a hurry and doesn't look in the right frame of the mind while approaching his innings. The cricketer-turned commentator said Kohli played some extravagant shots during his stay out in the middle in the first ODI, which he usually refrains from at the start of his innings.

"He came out as if he was in a hurry. The first ball he tried something, the second ball he tried something else. These are extravagant shots that you don’t expect Kohli to play," said Chopra on ESPNCricinfo.

"That four-ball innings was very surprising. It perhaps tells you that he is not exactly in the right frame of mind because technically you can't falter after a 4-ball innings," he added.

Chopra also spoke about Kohli's batting approach during the ODI series against South Africa last month and said he didn't look at his best despite scoring a decent amount of runs in the three matches. Kohli had notched up 116 runs in the three games.

"If you talk about aptitude or caliber, there’s no doubt. So what’s the problem? Even in South africa he looked a different batter. But personally, I wasn’t 100% convinced that this is the Virat Kohli at his very best. He didn’t look like that. Scored runs, but not the prettiest," said Chopra.

This 4 ball innings reflected that he is not mentally completely there," he added.

Despite a poor outing for Kohli, India managed to beat West Indies comfortably by six wickets in the first ODI to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The former India skipper will be looking to bounce back to form when the two teams lock horns in the second ODI at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

Virat Kohli not in right frame of mind: Aakash Chopra on former captain's 4-ball 8 in 1st ODI vs West Indies

Indian cricket started a new era in white-ball formats under Rohit Sharma when the Men in Blue faced West Indies in the three-match ODI series opener on Sunday (February 6) in Ahmedabad on Sunday. It was a special outing for the two-time ODI World Champions as they were playing their 1000th match in the shorter format.

In their landmark outing, India beat the Kieron Pollard-led Windies without dropping much sweat. Opting to bowl first, India rode on Yuzvendra Chahal's 4-fer and Washington Sundar's 3 for 30 to dismiss the Men in Maroon for a paltry 176 43.5 overs. In reply, India's run-chase was led by Captain Rohit's 60 and vital unbeaten knocks from Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda to win by six wickets.

Thus, Rohit's tenure as full-time white-ball captain has started on a memorable note. Being a proven leader in IPL, with as many as five trophies for the Mumbai Indians (MI), a lot is riding on Rohit to end India's ICC-title drought since 2013. Hence, former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha lauded Rohit's captaincy skills and shed light on how different it is from his predecessor Virat Kohli.

"Kohli is so energetic and expressive that a player who doesn't have similar nature has problems in expressing himself... he doesn't get an idea about expressing his thoughts to the skipper in intense situations. But Rohit isn't too expressive. He knows that in such a high-intensity game, you will find players who are introverted. This is a major difference in the character or approach of Kohli & Rohit," said Ojha on Cricbuzz.

"Overall, their intensity to win games is the same but many players say that they are comfortable with Rohit. Any new player takes time to open up... and Rohit makes that easier despite not being expressive on the field. A shy player gets a bit intimidated by Virat's in-your-face attitude. But the bigger goal of both Virat and Rohit is to take Indian cricket forward," Ojha further added.

'Shy players don't open up....' - Pragyan Ojha differentiates captaincy styles of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma

Skipper Rohit Sharma brought in a sense of calm with a sizzling 60 after India's new spin combination of Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar laid the platform for an easy six-wicket victory over West Indies in the first ODI which also happens to be the country's 1000th.

First, the hosts bundled out West Indies for a meagre 176 in 43.5 overs as spinners Chahal (4/49 in 9.5 overs) and Washington (3/30 in 9 overs) ran through their listless line-up and then the skipper smashed 60 off 51 balls with hosts chased down the target in just 28 overs.

It is the 10th time in last 16 games that West Indies have failed to bat full 50 overs despite presence of senior players like Darren Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Nicholas Pooran to name a few.

After a brief middle-order wobble, Suryakumar Yadav (34 no) and debutant Deepak Hooda (26 no) added 62 runs without much pressure to take the team home.

Just like the skipper, India also missed batter Rohit in South Africa in equal measure and on his comeback, there were no signs of any hamstring niggle as he smashed 10 fours and a six, adding 84 with stand-in opener Ishan Kishan (28).

Virat Kohli (8) also started with two boundaries but was holed out in the deep while Rishabh Pant was unfortunately run-out at the non-striker's end. But Rohit was in his element, while young Kishan, played second fiddle to perfection.

The former toyed with the West Indies attack, as the hosts were on course for a comfortable chase with the team fifty coming up in the ninth over.

Rohit, who made a comeback to the team after an injury, was brutal on veteran Kemar Roach, hitting him for two fours and a maximum ? his trademark pull shot, as India fetched 15 runs off the 10th over and raced to 67/0.

By the time Alzarri Joseph (2/45) trapped him leg-before, India were on their way towards an easy win in a milestone game. Earlier, Chahal and Sundar wreaked havoc on slow track as the West Indies batters made a beeline to the pavilion, save Jason Holder (57; 4x6) and Fabian Allen (29), whose 78-run stand for the eighth-wicket helped the team go past the 160-run mark.

Put into bat, West Indies lost opener Shai Hope (8; 2x4) cheaply after he was castled by Mohammed Siraj (1/26) in the third over as the visitors lost their first wicket for 13.

Hope had hit Siraj for two successive boundaries, but on the next his inside edge, while attempting a drive, shattered the middle and leg stump. Brandon King (13;2x4) started with a boundary, and then was joined by one-down Darren Bravo (18 off 34 balls; 3x4), as the two tried to resurrect the innings, but could only add 31 runs for the second wicket.

Bravo struck two boundaries off pacer Prasidh Krishna (2/29) in the sixth over, as the visitors crawled to 28/1 after six overs. The duo mixed caution and aggression as West Indies was poised at 39/1 after 10 overs.

But Sundar pegged back the visitors by removing King and Bravo in the 12th over as the visitors slipped to 45/3.
Sundar first sent back King, who chipped it to short mid-wicket where Suryakumar Yadav took an excellent catch. And then he trapped Bravo in front of the wicket, using his straight and flat delivery.

Then it was Chahal, who took two wickets in two successive deliveries in the 20th over as he removed both hard-hitting batters ? Nicholas Pooran (18; 3x4), whom he trapped in the front. This was Chahal's 100th ODI wicket.

Off the next ball, he cleaned up Kieron Pollard (O) with his googly that knocked the rival skipper's off-stump. West Indies were in a spot of bother as they lost half the side for just 71.

Chahal was on a rampage as he then removed Shamarh Brooks (12), who edged to stumper Rishabh Pant, as West Indies was teetering at 78/6. However, Holder and Allen tried to take the game deep. While Holder struck four sixes, Allen hit two boundaries, before Sundar lobbed a return catch of his bowling to send Allen back.

The team eventually was bundled out in 43.5 overs with Chahal removing last man Alzarri Joseph, to take his fourth.
The second ODI will be played at the same venue on February 9.

Rohit Sharma & Co. thrash West Indies by 6 wickets as India register comprehensive win in 1000th ODI

Rohit Sharma enjoyed a brilliant game as captain of the Indian team after making his comeback from a hamstring injury, in the first ODI against West Indies on Sunday. It was Rohit's first ODI as the full-time captain of the Indian team and he led from the front on the field. The Hitman could not have hoped for a better start as India defeated West Indies by 6 wickets in the series-opener of the three-match rubber.

Rohit won the toss and opted to bowl first, inviting West Indies to bat in the first ODI. The bowlers got the hosts off to a brilliant start as West Indies were reduced to 79/7 inside just 23 overs. While the bowlers produced an exceptional performance, they also needed some help from the Decision Review System (DRS).

Skipper Rohit reviewed as many as three not-out decisions by the on-field umpires during the West Indies innings and ended up getting all of them right. All three decisions were overturned by the third umpire as India had a field day in terms of using the DRS accurately.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was left impressed by India's brilliant usage of the DRS and came up with an interesting suggestion. Gavaskar said it was time to replace 'Dhoni Review System' - a famous term used by the commentators and fans for the DRS, referring to former India captain MS Dhoni's ability to get reviews right more often than not.

Gavaskar suggested that now that Rohit is also making brilliant DRS calls, the term 'Dhoni Review System' can be replaced by 'Definitely Rohit System'. "Rohit Sharma got those reviews spot on. Earlier when Dhoni used to get more right than wrong, it was called as Dhoni Review System. Now you can term it as ‘Definitely Rohit System’," Gavaskar said while commentating during the game.

Later, speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said he used to use the term 'Dhoni Review System' for former skipper Dhoni when he was part of the Indian team. However, he would now like to call it Rohit's system after witnessing the current Indian skipper's success rate with the DRS.

“When Dhoni was there I used to call it the Dhoni Referral System. And I mentioned it in commentary that you can now call it the Rohit system because he is getting it absolutely right so far,” said Gavaskar.

Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar combined to pick up seven wickets between them and derail West Indies's innings. The visitors were bundled out for a paltry 176 runs and lost the game with as many as 22 overs to spare as India chased down the target comfortably.

India got off to a good start in the run-chase as skipper Rohit slammed a brilliant half-century (60 off 51 balls) and added an 84-run stand for the first wicket with Ishan Kishan (28). The hosts did lose a few quick wickets after Rohit's departure but Suryakumar Yadav (34) and Deepak Hooda (26) added an unbeaten stand of 62 runs for the 5th wicket to take India over the line comfortably.

It was India's 1000th ODI as a team and the Men in Blue would be happy to have marked the milestone with a comprehensive win.

Also Read: 'It has hit the bat': Kohli helps Rohit nail successful review in 1st ODI vs West Indies - WATCH Later, speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said he used to use the term 'Dhoni Review System' for former skipper Dhoni when he was part of the Indian team. Also Read: Indian cricket team creates history, becomes first side to complete the milestone of 1,000 ODIs India got off to a good start in the run-chase as skipper Rohit slammed a brilliant half-century (60 off 51 balls) and added an 84-run stand for the first wicket with Ishan Kishan (28).

Definitely Rohit System: Sunil Gavaskar renames 'Dhoni Review System' after India's DRS success vs Windies

Former India captain Virat Kohli helped Indian skipper Rohit Sharma in taking a successful review during the first ODI against West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (February 06). The incident happened during the 22nd over of West Indies' innings after India won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first.

On the fifth delivery of the 22nd over, West Indies batter Shamarh Brooks edged the ball to Indian wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant off the bowling of Yuzvendra Chahal. The on-field umpire was not convinced and adjudged the batter not-out. However, Chahal and other Indian players managed to convince Rohit to go for the review.

The conversation between the Indian players and skipper Rohit was caught on the stump-mic. While wicket-keeper Pant, who had a good view of the situation, said he was unsure if the ball had hit the bat, Kohli stepped in and convinced Rohit to go for the review. Kohli told the Indian captain the ball had definitely hit the bat.

"Rohit bat bhi laga hai and bat pad pe laga hai. Mere ko toh laga out hai (Rohit ball has hit the bat and the bat has hit the pad, I think it's out)," Kohli can be heard telling Rohit on the stump-mic. The video of the incident soon went viral on social media.

Rohit opted for the review and the replays confirmed the ball had clearly hit the bat of Brook before landing in Pant's gloves. The batter was sent packing on 12 off 26 balls as West Indies lost their sixth wicket in the game.

India's limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma on Saturday (February 05) played down the talks of Test captaincy ahead of the start of India's ODI series against West Indies. After missing the South Africa tour due to a hamstring injury, Rohit will be leading India in his first ODI series as full-time captain of the side.

Rohit had taken over as India's T20I captain in November last year following Virat Kohli's decision to step down as the T20I captain of the team. Rohit then replaced Kohli as the ODI skipper and is now being tipped to take over as the new Test captain following Kohli's resignation as captain in the longest format.

Kohli announced his decision to quit India's Test captaincy in January this year following the team's 2-1 defeat against South Africa away from home. Rohit, who was appointed as Test vice-captain ahead of the South Africa series last year, is one of the favourites to take over as the new Test skipper.

However, the Hitman is currently focused on leading the Indian team in the upcoming limited-overs series against West Indies. Rohit said he has no idea about Test captaincy as of now and stressed that workload management is important amid concerns over his fitness if he is appointed as India's captain across all three formats.

"There's time for that. My focus is on limited-overs cricket. Workload management is important. We could lose a few series because we need to keep changing players, but we're ready for that," Rohit told reporters in the pre-match presser in Ahmedabad on Saturday ahead of the first ODI against West Indies.

Forget that for now: Rohit Sharma on potentially taking over as India's next Test captain after Virat Kohli

India's limited-overs skipper Rohit Sharma is gearing up to lead the team in his first ODI series as full-time captain of the Indian team. India will lock horns with West Indies in the series-opener of the three-match ODI series at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (February 06). Rohit had to miss India's tour of South Africa due to a hamstring injury but has now returned to the squad after recovering fully.

Ahead of the start of the three-match ODI series against Kieron Pollard & Co., the Indian captain answered reporters' questions during a virtual pre-match press conference on Saturday. Rohit spoke on a range of topics from the COVID-19 situation in the Indian team to the team's vision in limited-overs cricket going forward.

Rohit was also asked about the lack of opportunities in the Indian team for the young openers Ruturak Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan. While Kishan was initially not part of the ODI squad and had been picked only in the T20I side, he was selected in the ODI squad after Shikhar Dhawan, Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week.

Rohit came up with a cheeky response to the question and asked the reporter if he wanted him to bench himself and senior opener Dhawan to give chances to the likes of Kishan and Gaikwad. "You are saying I and Shikhar should sit on the bench and give Ruturaj and Ishan chances at the top?"- Rohit responded.

"The top 3 batters in Indian ODI team have done very well. Young batters will get opportunities. Ishan is getting one. There are a lot of matches. The ones who do well will get opportunities. Dhawan did well in SA but is now affected by Covid. Ishan is getting the opportunity now," he added.

Apart from Gaikwad, Dhawan and Iyer, pacer Navdeep Saini has also tested positive for the virus and is currently in isolation. All four players are likely to not feature in the ODI series against West Indies. Vice-captain KL Rahul, who also plays as an opener, will miss the first ODI due to personal reasons which will see Kishan get an opportunity at the top.

However, Rahul will be available for selection from the second ODI. Mayank Agarwal has also been added to India's ODI squad after COVID-19 cases in the team but the batter is currently in quarantine and will not feature in the first ODI of the series.

'You want me & Shikhar Dhawan on bench?': Rohit Sharma stumps reporter after question on Kishan, Gaikwad

The Indian team was dealt with a huge blow ahead of the start of the upcoming ODI series against West Indies as three players tested positive for COVID-19. Openers Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer have tested positive for the virus and are unlikely to feature in the three-match ODI rubber that gets underway on Sunday (February 06).

With Dhawan and Gaikwad down with COVID-19 and KL Rahul unavailable for selection in the first ODI due to personal reasons, the Indian team had to rope in Ishan Kishan and Mayank Agarwal as reserve openers ahead of the start of the series.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma on Saturday confirmed his opening partner for the first ODI against the Kieron Pollard-led side. Rohit said Kishan will open the batting with him in the series-opener as Mayank is still in quarantine after joining the rest of the Indian squad in Ahmedabad.

"Ishan will open with me. Mayank is still in isolation although he has come into the squad. So, Ishan will open," Rohit told the reporters during the pre-match virtual press conference on Saturday.

Rohit himself will be returning to the field for the Men in Blue after a gap of nearly two months as he had missed India's tour of South Africa due to a hamstring injury. The Hitman has fully recovered and is raring to go in what will be his first ODI series as India's full-time captain.

The first ODI between the two sides will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. While Kishan will open the batting, Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda are likely to feature in the middle-order along with Rishabh Pant.

Anil Kumble's sacking as the head coach of the Indian cricket team in 2017 remains one of the most controversial sagas in Indian cricket. Kumble was removed as the head coach of the team following India's defeat in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 against Pakistan. Kumble was asked to leave just one year after being appointed as the head coach of the team.

At the time several reports had cited differences between Kohli and Kumble as the major reason behind his sacking as head coach. The captain and head coach were reportedly not on the same page which led to the controversial sacking. A former BCCI official has now lifted the lid on the entire saga.

Former BCCI administrator Ratnakar Shetty, who was working with the board in 2017, has opened up on the Kohli-Kumble episode in his new book 'On Board: Test.Trial.Triumph. My years in BCCI'. Shetty revealed Kohli and Kumble were not on the same wavelength and the captain had an upper hand which led to the legendary spinner's sacking from the head coach post.

“The events leading up to the resignation of Anil Kumble as coach of the men’s team after the ICC Champions Trophy final in June 2017 showcased the murkiness that had steadily crept into the corridors of the Cricket Centre," Shetty has written in his book, as per the Indian Express.

“It was obvious that some people did not want Anil to continue as coach. The captain and coach did not appear to be on the same wavelength and it seemed that the captain had the upper hand," the former BCCI administrator further elaborated.

Opening up on the reason behind Kumble's sacking and his differences with Kohli, Shetty revealed Kohli felt Kumble was 'not standing up for the players' in the team and was 'creating a tense atmosphere in the dressing room. Kumble was replaced by Ravi Shastri as the head coach after India's loss in the Champions Trophy 2017 final.

"I learnt later about a meeting that took place in London before the final of the Champions Trophy, which we lost to Pakistan. This meeting was attended by Virat, Anil, Johri, Amitabh Choudhary and Dr Sridhar. Apparently, Virat was not happy with Anil ‘for not standing up for the players and creating a tense atmosphere in the dressing room’, among other things," revealed Shetty in his book.

Kohli and Shastri enjoyed a formidable partnership as coach and captain and took India to unprecedented success in Test cricket. India registered a memorable maiden series win in Australia and dominated at home and overseas in the longest format. However, the team failed to win a major ICC trophy under Shastri.

Ahead of the series opener, three Indian players have tested positive for COVID-19 and are unlikely to feature in the three ODIs. Opening batters Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer have all tested positive for coronavirus. Team India is facing a crunch in terms of the opening slot after Dhawan and Gaikwad's positive reports.

Vice-captain KL Rahul could have opened the batting with captain Rohit Sharma in the duo's absence. However, he is set to miss the first ODI due to personal reasons. As per a report in PTI, young wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan has been added to India's ODI squad ahead of the start of the series.

Kishan, who also plays as an opener, has reportedly joined the Indian team in Ahmedabad and is likely to be the reserve opener in the squad. There are chances that the left-hander might open the batting with Rohit in the first ODI against West Indies on Sunday.

Apart from Kishan, Mayank Agarwal has also reportedly joined the Indian team in Ahmedabad amid COVID-19 infection to three players. While Kishan was only part of the T20I series against West Indies, Mayank was not a part of either of the two squads for the limited-overs series against West Indies.

India to play 1000th ODI: From Kapil, Dhoni to Ganguly - Captains who led Men in Blue in historic ties

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma remain the biggest two names in Indian cricket at present. While the captaincy baton has been passed from Kohli to Rohit in the white-ball formats, Indian cricket is set to enter a new era under Hitman in the forthcoming three-match ODI series versus West Indies at home.

Prior to the start of the India-WI series, in Ahmedabad, Rohit-Kohli are on the verge of joining former batting stars Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly in an elite list.

Kohli and Rohit are just 94 away from completing 5,000 runs in the ODI format, where both the superstars have excelled over the years. Currently, the duo have accumulated 4,906 runs, from 81 innings at 64.55 comprising 18-century stands. Thus, they can become only the third Indian batting pair to complete the milestone and join the two stalwarts -- Ganguly and Tendulkar -- who compiled a total of 8,227 runs in 176 innings. Rohit features in the list along with opening partner Shikhar Dhawan. The two have amassed 5,023 runs in 112 innings after becoming a daunting opening pair since the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Overall, the Rohit-Kohli will become the eighth batting pair to enter the 5,000-run milestone. In addition, the two have had a staggering run versus the Kieron Pollard-led West Indies. They have piled up 982 runs versus the Caribbean team and, thus, are 78 away from becoming the first-ever Indian pair to reach the 1,000-run club versus the Men in Maroon.

By virtue of this, they will once again join Tendulkar-Ganguly in becoming the second batting pair from Team India to have two or more partnership tallies of 1,000 runs, or, more, against a more than one opponent. Kohli-Rohit have over 1,000 runs as a pair versus Australia.

India vs WI, ODIs: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma on cusp of joining Sourav Ganguly-Tendulkar in elite list

Former India pacer Ajit Agarkar has given his take on what will be the biggest challenge for Rohit Sharma as India's new white-ball captain after Virat Kohli. Rohit had taken over as the T20I captain of the Indian team after Kohli's decision to relinquish the post last year. Rohit was then appointed as ODI captain of the team as the selectors wanted one skipper in white-ball cricket.

Rohit's first major assignment as India's new ODI captain will be the upcoming home series against West Indies as he missed the recently-concluded tour of South Africa. Rohit couldn't recover in time from his hamstring injury to lead India in the ODI series against the Proteas which the visitors lost 3-0.

Rohit has been dealing with injury issues constantly for the last few years and there remain doubts over his availability with him being appointed as the full-time captain in ODIs and T20Is. Former India pacer Ajit Agarkar believes being on top of his fitness will be the biggest challenge for Rohit as the captain of the Indian team.

The former India cricketer pointed out how fitness was the strength of both Kohli and Dhoni as captains as the duo rarely missed a game for the Indian team during their respective captaincy stints. However, Rohit's fitness has not been in peak physical condition of late.

"I think it's a good thing and the right thing to do - to have one captain for white-ball format and now Rohit actually can fly. So, the challenge for Rohit Sharma - in my opinion - is to stay fit and play everything that is there, from now to the World Cup in white-ball cricket, because you want the captain - that was one of Virat Kohli's strengths or MS Dhoni before that, they rarely missed games, and both were very fit," Agarkar said on Star Sports.

Rohit is also one of the favourites to take over as the captain of the Indian Test team after Kohli's resignation as skipper from the longest format. However, the chances of the selectors handing over the reins to Rohit are bleak considering his workload and fitness management.

The upcoming ODI series against West Indies will be Rohit's first as the captain of the Indian ODI side. The Hitman will be hoping to get off to a winning start. India will play three ODIs against the Kieron Pollard-led side followed by three T20Is.

That was Dhoni and Kohli's strength: Ajit Agarkar on Rohit Sharma's biggest challenge as India's captain

On January 15, Virat Kohli dropped a bomb by announcing his resignation as Team India's Test captain. This came as a huge shock to the entire cricketing fraternity. Kohli's decision came a day after India lost the three-match Test series versus Dean Elgar-led South Africa, in the rainbow nation.

The 33-year-old tweeted saying, "Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India, it’s now. It’s been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance every day to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test Captain of India, it’s now."

Under Kohli, India became a more confident and aggressive force in home Tests and started winning more regularly in away series as well. During his tenure as the Test captain, India won their maiden Test series in Australia, earned an unassailable 2-1 lead over England in the incomplete five Tests in the United Kingdom in mid-2021, played the inaugural WTC final and ended as the No. 1 ranked side in the format for five successive years in the annual updates of the ICC Rankings. Following his resignation, all-rounder Shardul Thakur has now opened up on Kohli's decision.

“It was an emotional moment for everyone. No one expected that he would resign from Test captaincy," Thakur told Indian Express in a chat.

“We did well under his captaincy, especially overseas. Those series we lost overseas were close ones. The team was doing well under him and no one expected this. However, now that he has made his decision, everyone should respect it,” he added.

After Kohli's sudden resignation as the Test captain, the BCCI selectors have a tough job to name his successor. The contenders are Rohit Sharma (already the Test vice-captain and limited-overs skipper), KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant. The selectors will have to take a call and finalise the next captain before India's upcoming two-match Test series versus Sri Lanka, at home, in February-March.

Regarding Women's IPL, he told in the same portal, "The Women’s T20 Challenge will again be back this year in the month of May. Hopefully, in the future, we will be able to host a bigger women’s IPL once the number of women players goes up. But this year, the Women’s T20 Challenge will happen during the IPL playoffs."
