Sanju Samson has come a long way. While he hasn't taken international cricket by a storm as yet, there is no doubting his talent and overall skills at the highest level. Even in the IPL, the 27-year-old Samson has made a mark and is Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper after being&nbsp;consistent in their line-up for years.

However, just like every other cricketer or sports personality, Samson's early days weren't smooth as well. He went through his fair share of struggles and his family also faced quite a few hurdles. Recalling an incident on how his parents tolerated insults from people, Samson told Gaurav Kapoor on Breakfast with Champions, "My father and mother used to pick my kit bag, which was very heavy. to the bus stand. There used to be noise from behind "Oye Sachin aur uske papa bhi jaa rahe hai bhai, ye banega Tendulkar?" (Oh look, Sachin and his father are also going. Will he become Tendulkar?) So he has also tolerated a lot of taunts."

"But they and mainly my brother were confident that I would play for India. My brother told me that it was his superstition to not tell me that I would play for India but he always knew from within that I was capable," added Samson.

'Will he become Sachin Tendulkar?' RR captain Sanju Samson reveals how his family tolerated insults

Sanju Samson has come a long way. While he has still not become a regular for Team India, the Kerala wicketkeeper-batsman has shown his talent and skills to world cricket with some cameos&nbsp;for the national side and his resounding success in the IPL, representing the Rajasthan Royals (RR).

At present, Samson is the captain of the one-time winners RR. Back in 2013, in his debut IPL season, he joined the team when it was being led by India's current head coach Rahul Dravid.&nbsp;Recalling a hilarious incident of batting alongside Dravid for the first time on&nbsp;Breakfast with Champions, the 27-year-old revealed to the host Gaurav Kapoor&nbsp;that it was one of the most special&nbsp;moments of his life.

"Never before or after, have I batted the way I did on those two days. I'd hit a shot and a voice from behind would come - 'What a shot'. 'Shot Sanju'! That kept pumping me up. It was magical, very special," he said.

Talking about the hilarious episode, Samson said that he was sent in at No. 3 on debut with Dravid being in the middle. "I never thought I would bat alongside Rahul Dravid. So my first game I played... I went one-down, Rahul Sir was opening. I knew they'd sent me to hit so I went and hit the first ball. I did something like that [shadow bats a shot on the leg side] and it went for a four.

"Rahul Sir came to me [while tapping on the surface] he said, 'Sanju take your time. Take a couple of balls and see what you can do. The next ball was a bouncer and I subconsciously pulled and it went for 4 runs. Sir came over and said, 'Keep going, keep going'," Samson added.

Samson has grown from strength to strength&nbsp;playing for the RR franchise. So far, he has amassed 3,366 runs in 131 IPL games -- while also representing the Delhi Daredevils (DD) in between -- at a strike rate of&nbsp;135.73.

Talking about the Samson-led RR franchise, they are currently at the third position in the IPL 2022 points table, with six wins from ten games. They will be hoping to enter the playoffs and end their 14-year-long trophy drought.

Virat Kohli has endured a lean patch in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as he has struggled to get going with the bat. Despite having notched up a couple of good scores, Kohli has looked far from his best for his side Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) this season.

However, the Indian run-machine bounced back to form with a gritty half-century in RCB's last outing against Gujarat Titans. Opening the innings, Kohli scored 58 off 53 balls to help RCB post a fighting total of 170 runs on the board but Faf du Plessis &amp; Co. lost the game after sensational cameos from Rashid Khan and Rahul Tewatia in GT's run-chase.

Kohli, who is often regarded as one of the best batters of all time, has been backed by many to soon return to the top of his game amid his poor patch. Recently, former England cricket team captain Kevin Pietersen compared Kohli with football legend Cristiano Ronaldo and explained how they both are like similar brands in their respective teams.

Ronaldo is considered one of the greatest footballers of all time and continues to be one of the most prolific goal-scorers in world football despite being 37. The Manchester United superstar has shown no signs of slowing down despite his growing age and continues to be a game-changer for his club and country.

While talking about how Kohli needs to continue his rhythm after his morale-boosting half-century against GT, Pietersen urged the RCB star to look at Ronaldo.&nbsp;

"What he needs to do is to have a look at Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo. Two similar brands in their different teams and in their sports. You have Virat&nbsp;Kohli right at the top of cricket, his brand is right at the top of cricket.

Furthr lauding Kohli, Pietersen called his pedigree in run-chases as his greatest attribute and also hailed the RCB stalwart as the greatest batter India has ever produced. It is a huge compliment from Piteresen for Kohli as India has produced several batting legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar among others.

Yuvraj Singh has had a stellar career for Team India. He represented the national side in 2000 and went onto play till late 2017 before announcing his retirement in 2019. Yuvraj&nbsp;ended his international career with 1,900, 8,701 and 1,177 Test, ODI and T20I runs, respectively. In addition, he claimed as many as&nbsp;148 international scalps.&nbsp;

Yuvraj also played a key role in India's triumph in the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup, under MS Dhoni's captaincy. Nonetheless, his career didn't reach another level despite the success enjoyed in 2011's showpiece event. While he fought cancer and returned on the field, he endured some tough moments on the pitch.

Yuvraj was severely criticised for his 21-ball 11 in India's 2014 T20 World Cup final defeat versus Sri Lanka, in Bangladesh. Thus, the former all-rounder opened up on his much-criticised knock and also stated that many former players didn't get a lot of support during the end of their careers, unlike MS Dhoni.

Speaking on Home of Heroes on Sports18, Yuvraj recalled being low on confidence during the T20 WC in 2014 and having the fear of being dropped. "During the T20 World Cup in 2014, I was very low on confidence. There was an atmosphere that I could get dropped. It’s not an excuse but I wasn’t getting enough support from the team. From the time of Gary, I was in Duncan’s era and things had completely changed in the team," Yuvraj said.

"Definitely when you have support from the coach and the captain it helps. Look at Mahi (MS Dhoni) towards the end of his career. He had so much support from Virat and Ravi Shastri. They took him to the World Cup, he played till the end, and went on to play 350 games. I think support is very important but in Indian cricket everybody will not get support," he opined.

When you are batting out there and you know that the axe is hanging on your head how will you concentrate and bat and give your best. It is not an excuse but with different coaches and after 2011 times are very different," Yuvraj&nbsp;added.

Yuvraj still remains one of the greatest white-ball players for Team India. He also contributed in crunch moments with the ball in hand and was a pinch-hitter, especially during his early days.

Kuldeep Yadav has made heads turn in IPL 2022. After struggling for form and regular appearances since early 2019, for Team India and also his previous franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the 27-year-old wrist spinner has come to his own in his new IPL franchise, i.e. the Delhi Capitals (DC).

So far, Kuldeep has won Player-of-the-Match on all four occasions Rishabh Pant &amp; Co. have won a game in the 15th season. As a result, Kuldeep occupies the second spot in the Purple Cap list, with second-most scalps (17). His comeback is nothing short of a fairytale, after falling down in the pecking order for both KKR and India (across formats).

Reflecting on his student's current form, Kuldeep's childhood coach His coach &nbsp;Kapil Dev Pandey feels Indian captain Rohit Sharma should be credited for trusting the spinner during the West Indies home series where Kuldeep performed and that raised his confidence. "Whenever captains trusted him, Kuldeep delivered. He has a good record in Tests. He has two hat-tricks in ODIs. He has a good T20I record. But still, he didn't get enough opportunities. This is really shocking. Kuldeep's career is protected because of Rohit Sharma. Rohit is the man behind Kuldeep's resurgence. He is a fantastic captain and he knows how to find talent in a big group of players. Ahead of the IPL, Rohit called Kuldeep and gave him the chance (against the West Indies). Kuldeep delivered too by taking two wickets," Pandey told&nbsp;timesofindia.com.

Happy Birthday Rohit Sharma: A look at five records held by the Hitman

Indian cricket team and Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma is celebrating his 35th birthday on Saturday (April 30). Wished have been pouring in from all corners for the Hitman, who is currently leading the Mumbai Indians in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir also shared a heartfelt wish for Rohit on social media.

Gambhir, who captained Kolkata Knight Riders for seven seasons from 2011 to 2017, said Rohit was the only batter in the IPL who gave him nightmares as captain. Gambhir, a two-time IPL-winning captain, found it difficult to stop the Hitman when he turned up against KKR.

Rohit enjoyed batting against KKR and still holds the record for most runs against the two-time champions in IPL history. He played several match-winning knocks for his side Mumbai Indians against KKR at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Rohit has also slammed six half-centuries against KKR.

Umran Malik on selectors' radar for South Africa T20I series afer impressive IPL 2022 campaign - Report

Yuvraj Singh had a stellar career for Team India. Making his debut in 2000, the swashbuckling all-rounder retired in 2019 after having played his last game in 2017. While he couldn't be a regular in the Test line-up, Yuvraj is regarded as one of the best white-ball players.

Yuvraj made his international debut during the Sourav Ganguly-led Team India's ICC Knockout Trophy campaign, in Nairobi. In the quarter-final game, the former all-rounder made his presence felt against a solid Australian line-up. The then 18-year-old Yuvraj returned with a match-winning 84 to be adjudged Player-of-the-Match and guided India to a 20-run win over the Men in Yellow.

Nonetheless, Yuvraj had a sleepless night before his debut game.&nbsp;Recalling the night before the encounter, Singh said he could not sleep the whole night. The then skipper&nbsp;Ganguly had asked the southpaw whether he would be interested in opening the innings. To this, Yuvi had also given his nod.

“Yeah, if you want me to open, I’ll open,” Singh told Sports 18's Home of Heroes. “Whole night I didn’t sleep.”

“I was batting at No. 5, very nervous. But when I went into bat, focus turned to watching the ball,” recalled Yuvraj who faced the likes of Brett Lee, Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie along with&nbsp;Australians'&nbsp;sledging. However, Yuvi went past all obstacles and was even given a reprieve at 37 as he made a memorable start to his international career. “If I today would’ve scored 37 on my debut against Australia, I would’ve been very happy because of the attack that I was facing,” Yuvraj asserted. “Luckily, I went on to score 84, I don’t know how, just watched the ball, hit the ball. It was a very big moment for me, to beat Australia and get the Man-of-the-Match award,” he added.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) failed to chase down a modest 145 versus Rajasthan Royals (RR) in match 39 of IPL 2022 to lose by 29 runs at the MCA Stadium, Pune on Tuesday (April 26). All eyes were once again on Virat Kohli, the former RCB captain, who has been struggling for runs in the ongoing IPL season.

With only 119 runs in eight innings prior to the RR clash, it was expected that Kohli would come back to his usual best versus Rajasthan, a team against whom RCB were unbeaten in the last five face-offs. Despite Kohli being proactive on the field, talking to the bowlers and helping them plot batters' downfall, the star batter couldn't do much with the bat. He opened the innings for the first time in the 15th season but only managed a scratchy 10-ball 9.&nbsp;

Reflecting on his woeful run with the bat, former India head coach Ravi Shastri once again suggested Kohli to take a break. In fact, he added that the 33-year-old should pull out of IPL 2022 to regain some form after a break and prolong his international career. "I think a break is ideal for him because he has played non-stop cricket and he has captained the side across all formats. It will be wise of him to take a break. You know, sometimes you have to draw the balance. This year he is already into the tournament (IPL 2022), tomorrow if push comes to shove and you want to prolong your international career and make a mark there for 6-7 years, pull out of the IPL, for all you care," Shastri said on sports presenter Jatin Sapru's YouTube channel.

<section>
"If that is the case, you have played for 14-15 years. Not only Virat, I'll tell that to any other player. If you want to play and do well for India, you have to draw the line where you want to take that break and the ideal break would be off-season where India is not playing and the only time India does not play is the IPL. Sometimes, you need to do that or tell the franchise I'll only play the half. Pay me half, as simple as that. Those tough calls need to come if you want to reach the zenith of your profession as an international player," he further asserted.

Shastri added, "Virat is still young and he has best 5-6 years ahead of him. He would have realised what he has gone through in these last few months. He knows he has to go back to the drawing board, how he thinks, how he approaches and he has to literally start from scratch. There have been many players in the past who have gone through this. You mentioned first ball out, to be honest, from the outside I would not be worried. As a player if I have gotten out first ball, I have hardly been in. It is when you get in and throw it away, that is more disappointing. When he gets in, it is up to him to make it count."

For the unversed, Kohli has gone over 100 matches without a century&nbsp;across all formats (17 Tests, 21 ODIs, 25 T20Is and 39* IPL games). His last international ton came in late 2019. While he has got starts for India in all formats and scored some vital half-centuries, he has throw away his wicket after settling in or been dismissed for cheap more often than not since his last triple-figure knock.

'Pull out of IPL 2022' - Ravi Shastri's bold suggestion for Virat Kohli amid RCB star's batting concerns

When Virat Kohli got dismissed for a golden duck in Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) face-off versus Lucknow Super Giants, in IPL 2022's match 31, a statistic started doing the rounds on social media and elsewhere. It revealed that the once regarded 'run machine' has now gone over 100 matches without a century&nbsp;across all formats (17 Tests, 21 ODIs, 25 T20Is and 38*&nbsp;IPL games).&nbsp;

Kohli had a wry smile as he walked past KL Rahul &amp; Co. after an embarrassing first-ball duck. Four evenings later, King Kohli came to the crease in the second over of RCB's innings after Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opted to bowl first at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai in match 36 of the 15th season, on Saturday evening (April 23). As soon as he arrived, Kane Williamson -- a tactical mastermind -- strived hard to grab Aiden Markram's attention to add him to the slip cordon. Soon, Marco Jansen bowled outside off-stump, on the fifth-stump line, as Kohli wasted no time to edge one and get caught in the slips. This time, no smile followed as RCB's former skipper stood still in disbelief. He&nbsp;looked helplessly toward his non-striker (Anuj Rawat) as&nbsp;if asking&nbsp;to be pinched in order to accept the reality before walking back.

After his second successive golden duck, Kohli's expression said it all. There was sheer disbelief in his eyes. Thus, there was pin-drop silence in the stadium as an often hard-to-please and unforgiving crowd silently sympathised with Kohli after yet another failure.&nbsp;

What's fretting King Kohli? (Covid break, bio-bubble fatigue, overburdened, empty stands, BCCI row, etc.)

Those who possess even the most basic updates of men's cricket are aware of Kohli's barren run. It has been written, re-written, highlighted on front pages on several occasions, and even discussed on&nbsp;hour-long shows on how Team India and RCB's former captain has been without a century in competitive cricket since late 2019. At first, it seemed as if it was just a matter of time before Kohli would rediscover his form. However, time is now surely passing away at a rapid pace for the 33-year-old superstar cricketer.

Kohli's downfall coincided with Covid-19's advent. It led to a six-month-long break at the international level. Since then, Kohli has not been the old Kohli. At times, his aggression has gone missing, he has been completely undone by the bio-bubble restrictions and looked clueless playing in front of empty stands.&nbsp;A player of Kohli's caliber cherishes the crowd support. Their energy rubs on him, helping him remain at his usual chirpy best. All this is lagging in his game nowadays!

Also, Team India's unbelievably hectic cricketing&nbsp;calendar hasn't helped Kohli's case. Despite some mini-breaks, he has almost been omnipresent for India and the RCB. The nearly-decade-long captaincy responsibilities (he became RCB's full-time skipper in 2013) also led to him being overburdened. Moreover, the BCCI captaincy row added salt to Kohli's wounds. The entire saga panned out in the open. Thus, it led to Kohli taking BCCI heads on, however, mentally he kept losing the battle with each passing day...

The dismissals depict a sad story...

Since April 2020, Kohli has fallen to spinners more often than&nbsp;not (51 out of his total 74 dismissals have been against the tweakers). In addition, he continues to remain lost regarding&nbsp;the fourth-fifth stump lines; chasing deliveries way out of his arc. At times, the gap between bat and pad has also widened alarmingly. Surely, he can't be far away from finding his peak once again. He is too good a player to miss out for too long. But, hasn't it already been a long wait? Has he become a victim of his greatness? Is he overcooked and&nbsp;desperately in need of a lengthy break?

Ravi Shastri on Star Sports:&nbsp;Virat Kohli is overcooked. If anyone needs a break, it's him. Whether it's 2 months or a month-and-a-half, whether it's after England or before England. He needs a break because he has got 6-7 years of cricket left in him and you don't want to lose that with a fried brain. He is not the only one. There might be 1 or 2 in world cricket going through the same. You need to address the problem upfront.

The answers lie within Kohli's mind. He knows his body and how his mind functions better&nbsp;than anyone (Taking the liberty to share a&nbsp;message for his&nbsp;plethora of&nbsp;fans: don't make him your main protagonist in every discussion. Don't even discuss him. Focus less on him. Outside noise needs to die down for Kohli to rise again).

Even the great Sachin Tendulkar had flaws. He, however, always found ways to tackle them. For now, Kohli is content with working on his strengths than weaknesses. Maybe he needs to slow down. Maybe, he needs to fight the bubble within&nbsp;before coming out of this crisis.

The engine surely needs an overhaul. At present, the damage has been done. But, King Kohli isn't one to be kept out for very long. Somewhere down the line, his usual form is still waiting for him. He just needs to redo the coding&nbsp;to function as usual.

When Virat Kohli got dismissed for a golden duck in Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) face-off versus Lucknow Super Giants, in IPL 2022's match 31, a statistic started doing the rounds on social media and elsewhere.

When Virat Kohli got dismissed for a golden duck in Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) face-off versus Lucknow Super Giants, in IPL 2022's match 31, a statistic started doing the rounds on social media and elsewhere. It revealed that the once regarded 'run machine' has now gone over 100 matches without a century across all formats (17 Tests, 21 ODIs, 25 T20Is and 38* IPL games). Kohli had a wry smile as he walked past KL Rahul & Co. after an embarrassing first-ball duck. He looked helplessly toward his non-striker (Anuj Rawat) as if asking to be pinched in order to accept the reality before walking back. After his second successive golden duck, Kohli's expression said it all. There was sheer disbelief in his eyes. Thus, there was pin-drop silence in the stadium as an often hard-to-please and unforgiving crowd silently sympathised with Kohli after yet another failure. (Covid break, bio-bubble fatigue, overburdened, empty stands, BCCI row, etc.) Those who possess even the most basic updates of men's cricket are aware of Kohli's barren run. It has been written, re-written, highlighted on front pages on several occasions, and even discussed on hour-long shows on how Team India and RCB's former captain has been without a century in competitive cricket since late 2019. At times, his aggression has gone missing, he has been completely undone by the bio-bubble restrictions and looked clueless playing in front of empty stands. A player of Kohli's caliber cherishes the crowd support. Their energy rubs on him, helping him remain at his usual chirpy best. All this is lagging in his game nowadays! Also, Team India's unbelievably hectic cricketing calendar hasn't helped Kohli's case. Since April 2020, Kohli has fallen to spinners more often than not (51 out of his total 74 dismissals have been against the tweakers). In addition, he continues to remain lost regarding the fourth-fifth stump lines; chasing deliveries way out of his arc. At times, the gap between bat and pad has also widened alarmingly. Surely, he can't be far away from finding his peak once again. He is too good a player to miss out for too long. But, hasn't it already been a long wait? Has he become a victim of his greatness? Is he overcooked and desperately in need of a lengthy break? Ravi Shastri on Star Sports: Virat Kohli is overcooked. IPL 2022: What's fretting Virat Kohli, the player?

Rajasthan Royals (RR) faced Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in match 39 of the IPL 2022 edition, on Tuesday evening (April 26) at the MCA Stadium, Pune. Being asked to bat first, Sanju Samson &amp; Co. managed only 144-8, riding on Riyan Parag's 56 not out, but dismissed RCB for 115 to win by 29 runs (courtesy of R Ashwin's 3-fer and Kuldeep Sen's 4-wicket haul) and top the points table.

While RR continues to move from strength to strength in the ongoing season, with six wins from eight games, Samson has been criticised for his batting approach. Coming out to bat at No. 4, Samson had a tough task in hand as Royals were reduced to 33-3, with in-form opener Jos Buttler out for 8. Though the RR skipper played some big shots and settled in, he was dismissed for a 21-ball 27. Many former cricketers and experts lashed out at Samson for being overaggressive amid a crisis situation. He had attempted an unsuccessful reverse hit off Wanindu Hasaranga, who has dominated Samson, the batter went for the same shot on the very next ball, in the 10th over, to get clean bowled.

Thus, former West Indies speedster Ian Bishop commented on Samson's dismissal and said on ESPNcrincfo's 'T20 Time Out', "That Sanju is wasting good form and good opportunity to score runs to press for an international recall, to lead his team when Jos Buttler doesn't score."

Samson has looked good in most of his innings in this year's IPL. However, he hasn't played a big knock as yet. With India set to play the T20 World Cup later this year, in Australia, the Royals skipper needs to buckle up and produce some big scores to press hard for an international recall.&nbsp;

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has backed Rishabh Pant to become the next Test captain of the Indian cricket team. Wicket-keeper batter Pant has been one of the most consistent performers with the bat for Team India in the longest format over the last couple of years and is seen as one of the potential captaincy candidates for the future.

Pant's name was also debated alongside the likes of KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah for India's Test captaincy before Rohit Sharma was officially confirmed as Virat Kohli's successor in the whites earlier this year. Yuvraj believes the young wicket-keeper batter's game has evolved in the last few years and that he should be groomed as the next leader of the Test team.

Yuvraj also cited the example of the legendary MS Dhoni, who had not captained even at the domestic level before being appointed as India's T20I skipper ahead of the 2007 T20 World Cup. Dhoni went on to lead India to a memorable triumph and there was no looking back from there as he established his credentials as one of the best leaders in the history of the game with numerous triumphs at home and overseas.

“You must get someone ready. Like Mahi became captain out of nowhere but they made him, right! Then he evolved. Keeper is always a good thinker because he always has the best view on the ground," Yuvraj said on Sports 18 as he backed Pant to lead India in Tests in the future.

“You pick a young guy who can be a future captain, give him time and don’t expect miracles in the first six months or a year. I feel you must believe in the younger guys to get the job done," he added.

Yuvraj believes Pant has matured over the last couple of years and his performances with the bat have also improved immensely. The former India all-rounder picked Pant as the right guy to lead the Test team going forward while revealing that he often cites the example of the legendary Adam Gilchrist when talking to the left-hander.

“I was immature at that age, Virat was immature when he was captain at that age. But he (Pant) is maturing with time. I don’t know how the support staff think about it, but I think he is the right guy to lead the Test team," said Yuvraj.

“You already have four Test hundreds already and you can do that. In terms of best wicket-keeper batsman, I see Rishabh could be the future legend,” added the former India all-rounder.

Pant is currently leading Delhi Capitals in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The left-hander had inspired his team to the playoffs in IPL 2021 last year in what was his debut season as captain. Pant will be hoping to take Delhi Capitals to the playoffs once again this year.

Virat Kohli remains the poster boy of Indian cricket. While many youngsters have joined Team India post Kohli, the 33-year-old remains the face of the national side and also the most-talked-about cricketer. While he is known as a fierce competitor on the 22-yard cricket strip, the right-hander is a very simple and humble person off the field.&nbsp;

Narrating an incident, during India's tour of West Indies immediately after the 2019 ODI World Cup, former Indian cricketer Vivek Razdan has revealed how Kohli never used to travel business class and rather preferred being with teammates in economy class during his captaincy era. As per Razdan, two business class seats&nbsp;are reserved in business class for the captain&nbsp;and head coach of Team India.&nbsp;

Ravi Shastri has donned several roles in Indian cricket. The former all-rounder turned into a successful commentator before serving as Team India's head coach from 2017 to 2021. However, he also fulfilled the role of the&nbsp;team director for the national side twice, in 2007 (during the Bangladesh tour) and from 2014 to 2016.

Before his appointment as India's team director in 2014, during MS Dhoni &amp; Co.'s England tour, Shastri had no time to react as the BCCI asked him to come onboard as soon as possible. Back then, he was part of the commentary panel for India-England Tests, where the Dhoni-led visitors were being hammered left, right and center (eventually losing 3-1).

Recalling his appointment, Shastri told The Guardian, “I had no warning. I was commentating at the Oval during India’s [2014] tour of England and came off air to find six or seven missed calls. ‘Seven bloody calls? What’s happened here?’. [The BCCI] just said: ‘We want you to take over, starting tomorrow, at any cost.’ I told them I’d have to speak to my family and commercial partners but they just said they would sort all that out. And like that, I was straight in from the commentary box. You’ll see when I joined the setup [during the ODIs], I was still in jeans and loafers. Instantly my job changed."

After serving as the team director for two years, Shastri was the frontrunner to be India's next coach post Duncan Fletcher's end of tenure. Shastri continued his job as the team director despite Fletcher's exit in 2015. However, Anil Kumble took over as the head coach for a year, in 2016, before the job went to Shastri post the 2017 Champions Trophy. “We also had slingers [coaches with dogsticks] in the nets smashing the ball in at 160kph from 16 yards. Guys had no choice. There was no dodging, I’d stand behind the stumps to make sure of that. No matter who the person was, he had to go through that. The slingers would seriously let it rip and guys would look ugly. But you are meant to look ugly in the nets. In England, you have to grind and earn your runs."

“The same with the bowlers, we told them to stick in because there is a five-wicket session at any given time in England and at Lord’s and the Oval this decided the result. And we knew winning in Australia or England wasn’t coming with spin, it was fast bowlers, guys with aggression like Jasprit Bumrah. We were instrumental in making sure that guy played Test cricket. You don’t even need express pace, you just need attitude," Shastri opined.

Under Shastri, India were dominant across formats in bilateral series -- winning two Tests in Australia and gaining an unassailable 2-1 lead over England in the incomplete five Tests in the United Kingdom -- played the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-finals and inaugural WTC final.

Shaheen Afridi has grown from strength to strength with each game for Pakistan. He has become the Men in Green's multi-format player in no time and his stature is rising at a rapid pace. Last year, the young pacer was the star performer for Babar Azam &amp; Co. as Pakistan finally ended their winless streak versus India in World Cup history.

With India and Pakistan playing each other in their respective Super 12 opening clash in 2021 T20 World Cup, in Dubai, Shaheen returned with a match-winning spell of 3 for 31 -- dismissing India's Big Three in Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli -- as Pakistan restricted India for&nbsp;151-7 before the one-time winners chased it down with ten wickets and 13 balls to spare.

Recently, in conversation with Geo Super, Shaheen revealed he had a chat with Shahid Afridi to get some tips ahead of the marquee clash versus India. "When we had that match against India in the T20 World Cup, I requested Lala to have a word with me. Because before that I played just one match against India, that too in Asia Cup, which was in One-Day format. And this was a T20 game and we never won a World Cup game against India," Shaheen said.

"So I thought that this was a big opportunity for me. So I called Lala for some tips and asked him, 'What different do I do today?'. He gave me very good advice and told, 'Do something so that the entire stadium notices only Shaheen' and give your 100 percent in bowling and fielding. I just did that and we got the results,” he added.

Shahid Afridi has had some memorable performances versus India during his playing days for Pakistan. Thus, his words surely encouraged a young Shaheen, who was highly impressive versus India and led the Men in Green to a stunning ten-wicket win at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.&nbsp;

Babar-led Pakistan, however, couldn't reach the tournament final in last year's edition, losing to eventual winners Australia in the semi-finals.

Thus, his words surely encouraged a young Shaheen, who was highly impressive versus India and led the Men in Green to a stunning ten-wicket win at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. Babar-led Pakistan, however, couldn't reach the tournament final in last year's edition, losing to eventual winners Australia in the semi-finals.

Team India had a drastic change of approach under Virat Kohli-Ravi Shastri. Under Kohli-Shastri, India had a dominant run across formats, especially in bilateral series, but were most impressive in the red-ball format. Thus, India were at the No. 1 spot in ICC Test Rankings for a long period of time, played the inaugural WTC final, dominated at home and even tasted success in SENA countries.

While India came close to beating South Africa in three Tests in the African nation, in early 2018, they lost the series 2-1. In England, they lost 4-1 in 2018 before turning it around with an unassailable 2-1 lead in an incomplete five-match Test series in 2021. They struggled in New Zealand but won two series on the trot versus Australia in their own backyard during the Kohli-Shastri era.

Shastri became the first Asian coach to win a series in Australia when Kohli &amp; Co. won 2-1 in the 2018/19 tour. The series scoreline remained the same when India toured Australia and played the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under in 2020/21. Thus, it is safe to claim that the national side's playing style, mannerism and body language went through a rapid change under Shastri's coaching and Kohli's leadership.

Reflecting on India's twin success in Australia, Shastri recently spilled the beans on how he pumped up the Indian players and helped them in tackling the Aussies' sledging. "It was also outlining how we want to play: to be aggressive and ruthless, to up the fitness levels, to get a group of fast bowlers to take 20 wickets overseas. And it was about attitude, especially when playing the Aussies. I told the boys if one single expletive comes your way, give them three back: two in our language and one in theirs," said Shastri to the&nbsp;Guardian.

While Cheteshwar Pujara, Kohli, Ishant Sharma, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah were India's star performers in the 2-1 Test series win over Australia in 2018/19, the visitors overcame various obstacles (injury concerns, Covid-19 bio-bubbles, sledging, racism) and played sans regular captain Kohli to triumph in the 2020/21 series Down Under. Team India have a hectic schedule in the calendar year. Soon after the completion of IPL 2022, the Indian senior men's team will soon gear up for a home series versus South Africa. Temba Bavuma-led Proteas will arrive in India for five T20Is, from June 09-June 19, as the bilateral series will be a preparation for both sides for the 2022 T20 World Cup.

As per reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is keen on doing away with bio-bubbles and also getting rid of hard quarantine for the South Africa home series. As per the board's senior official, bio-bubbles are taking a hard toll on cricketers and, hence, it is likely that the players will benefit with more freedom given to them this time around.

For the unversed,&nbsp;the bilateral series for India, prior to the ongoing IPL season, have all been played under bio-bubbles. In fact, even IPL 2022 is being conducted within the bio-bubble environment. Thus, this will be a welcome change for players if a change is implemented by the BCCI.

India vs SA: BCCI to do away with bio-bubbles and hard quarantine, senior players to be rested - Report

Former Australia pacer Brett Lee recently recalled his first on-field encounter with the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. The duo shared one of the greatest rivalries in world cricket during their playing days. While Sachin is regarded as one of the greatest batters of all time, Lee is one of the fastest bowlers to have played the game.

Sachin, who is the leading run-getter of all time in international cricket, owns a plethora of other major records. The Master Blaster enjoyed great duels with some of the best bowlers of his time during his playing days, including Lee. The duo came up against each other on several occasions and managed to get the better of each other a few times.

On Sunday (April 24), Lee had taken to social media to send birthday wishes to Sachin, who turned 49. The former Australian pacer also paid tribute to the Master Blaster on his YouTube channel Brett Lee TV. The former speedster recalled his first meeting with Sachin and revealed he had thought of asking for an autograph from the batting legend.

“I met Sachin for the first time way back in 1999 in Canberra. I was playing in the Prime Minister's XI against the touring Indian team, which of course had Sachin in it. It was a practice match when he came out to bat and I'm bowling to the great Sachin Tendulkar. I actually thought, 'I might get an autograph. Get the ball and say, 'Hey mate, can you please sign this'. I thought that would look cool as my first impression,” Lee said in the video.

As a young kid growing up, I watched the wonderful Tendulkar and here I was, bowling to him. I managed to nick him off and we shook hands at the end of the game. I was in absolute awe of this wonderful man," Lee added.

Sachin and Lee enjoyed some great on-field battles between them when India locked horns with Australia at the international stage. Lee recalled how the Master Blaster would receive applause from home fans even in Australia which was not the case with other batters who came out to bat when touring Down Under.

“Most players who are not from Australia receive a fair bit of flak. They normally get booed. The crowd appreciate the players but doesn't want to show it... that's the Australian culture. But every time Sachin walked out to bat, there was massive applause, not only from the Australians but also from the touring Indians who were a part of fans that flew in from around the world to watch Sachin," said Lee.

Sachin played a staggering 200 Tests and 463 ODIs in his glorious international career amassing 15,921 and 18,426 runs in the two formats respectively. The Master Blaster is the highest run-getter of all time in both Tests and ODIs and is record is unlikely to be broken anytime soon.

Jasprit Bumrah is currently involved in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 edition. While he was been economical for the struggling Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 15th season, he has managed to pick only five wickets from eight games so far.

On the other hand, Shaheen Shah Afridi's rise has been spectacular in recent times. He accounted for a total of 17 wickets across formats during Pakistan's home series versus Australia recently. While Bumrah was also among wickets in India-Sri Lanka Tests, in the run-up to IPL 2022, Shaheen has made heads turn in recent times whereas Bumrah is being played by caution in the ongoing IPL season. Thus, former Pakistani cricketer Aqib Javed made a bold claim on Bumrah-Shaheen. He also added that Men in Green speedster Haris Rauf&nbsp;has a more aggressive body language than the Indian pacer.

“The way Haris has bowled in the last few years, his average bowling speed is the fastest in the world. And the aggression he has, the way he runs, the batsman knows that the bowler is running towards him, but Bumrah's isn't that aggressive. And people enjoy these kind of bowlers who have such body language. Shaheen's graph is on the rise, while Bumrah is stable."

"He has less threatening performances than Shaheen, whether it's in T20s, ODIs or in Tests. And the rise of Pakistan cricket largely has depended on performances from Shaheen, Haris Rauf, Shadab Khan, Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan,” said Javed to&nbsp;Paktv.tv.

It is to be noted that Bumrah remains India's premier pacer across formats. He has been in form in Tests, also chipped in with key wickets in 2022 India-South Africa ODIs but hasn't played a lot of T20Is post last year's World Cup. At present, he might not be picking wickets at regular intervals for his IPL franchise, he still remains a potent threat for batters across formats.

Five records of Sachin Tendulkar that are nearly impossible to break

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have had an ordinary run in IPL 2022 so far. While the former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has amassed only&nbsp;119 runs at 19.83 and a strike rate of 123.95 in seven outings, Mumbai skipper Rohit has 114 runs in an equal number of&nbsp;outings, at an average of less than 20.

Kohli fell for a golden duck in RCB's 18-run win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their last encounter whereas Team India and MI captain Rohit departed for a two-ball duck in his side's three-wicket loss to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in match 33 of IPL 2022, on Thursday evening (April 21). In this way, he now also has most ducks in IPL history (14). Thus, both the Indian superstar batters have been far from their best. In addition, Kohli has&nbsp;played 100th successive innings, across formats, without a triple-figure score. Thus, the two batters' form is a concern for Team India going forward.&nbsp;

In a column with Betway, former England captain Kevin Pietersen came in support of Kohli and Rohit and further pointed out that these players have been cooked up by their national board. "Whereas Jos Buttler benefitted from a break during England's Test series in the West Indies, you've had the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jonny Bairstow playing all formats and living in bubbles for months on end,” Pietersen said.

"That is not any way to maximise world-class talent. They've churned out money for their boards by fulfilling most matches in every format in the last couple of years and, as star players, they are under constant pressure with millions of people watching them,” Pietersen further added. "The cricket schedule is crazy. Even as a commentator, I’m working flat out. But, clearly, I’m not under the pressure that these guys are,” Pietersen argued.

"Honestly, I think these guys need a six-month break. Getaway to the US, to London, to wherever elsewhere travel is unrestricted. Clear your head, come back and rack up the runs again. It's unrealistic, but it would do some of these guys the world of good," Pietersen further opined.

It will be interesting to see how RCB uses Kohli for the rest of IPL 2022 whereas Rohit-starrer MI are on the brink of an early elimination. If Mumbai doesn't qualify, it will make sense for the franchise to rest Rohit so that he can rediscover his form going forward. Rohit has had runs for India in the recent past, however, it seems he also needs some time off in a&nbsp;year&nbsp;comprising T20 World Cup, to be held later this year in Australia.

Umran Malik had made heads turn in last year's IPL. As a result, he was one of the net bowlers for Team India during their 2021 T20 World Cup, in the UAE. In IPL 2022, the SRH pacer has continued earning plaudits from the cricketing fraternity with his wicket-taking ability and raw pace.&nbsp;

So far, Umran has accounted for nine wickets in six games at an average of 22.33. Thus, he has grabbed the attention of former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar and the Little Master has made a bold claim on the pacer. Gavaskar revealed what has impressed him the most with regard to Umran and predicted that a debut for Team India isn't far away for the 22-year-old speedster.

"Umran Malik has been very, very impressive with his speed but more than his speed, it's his accuracy (that's impressed). A lot of guys who bowl at that speed tend to spray the ball around but Umran bowls very few wide deliveries," Gavaskar told&nbsp;Star Sports.

"If he can control the wides down the leg side, he will be a tremendous bowler because that will mean he'll be attacking the stumps all the time, and with his pace, it's not easy to hit straight. If he bowls wicket-to-wicket, he is pretty much going to become an unplayable bowler. He's going to play for India," the former Team India skipper added.

Umran was the star performer for SRH in their fourth successive win in IPL 2022 when they thrashed Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 7 wickets in match 28 on Sunday (April 17). The youngster returned with 4-0-28-4 as he continues to raise his stocks and make a strong claim to be added in the Team India setup sooner than later.

Mumbai Indians (MI) star Suryakumar Yadav recently recalled how skipper Rohit Sharma kept pushing him and motivating him to keep going after his goals when he was not being considered for selection in the Indian team despite his stellar performances in the domestic circuit.

Suryakumar was notching up runs consistently in domestic cricket and in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for a number of years. However, he earned the much-deserved recognition only after being roped in by Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of IPL 2018. Suryakumar became a vital cog in the middle order for MI and has since been one of the most consistent performers for the franchise.

He played an instrumental role in MI's title triumphs in the 2019 and 2020 seasons following which he earned his maiden India call up last year. Rewarded for his consistency with the bat, Suryakumar went on to don India's jersey for the first time in the home series against England and has since become a permanent member in the limited-overs sides.

Recalling the difficult phase before earning his maiden India call up last year, Suryakumar revealed how Rohit always had his back and kept telling him to keep knocking at the selectors' door. The Mumbai Indians skipper also advised the star batter to break the door with performances if it doesn't open.

"Rohit Sharma was always behind me - pushing me to work hard, he use to tell 'If you are scoring, score again in next game and then one after that also' - keep knocking that door of selection if it doesn't open, break it down," Suryakumar said on Gaurav Kapur's show Breakfast with Champions.

Suryakumar has now played 14 T20Is and 7 ODIs for India amassing 351 and 267 runs in the two formats respectively. He was part of India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2021 last year and is expected to retain his spot in the team for the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia this year.

The Mumbai Indians star is currently in action for his franchise in the ongoing IPL 2022 after making a comeback from injury and has done well so far in his first few matches. The stylish right-hander has so far notched up 200 runs in just four matches for his side but MI have failed to get their first win in the season having faced five defeats on the trot.

× Also Read: Watch - Shreyas Iyer loses cool at Venkatesh Iyer after latter denied a double to KKR skipper vs RR Suryakumar has now played 14 T20Is and 7 ODIs for India amassing 351 and 267 runs in the two formats respectively. 'Break the door if it doesn't open': Suryakumar Yadav recalls What Rohit Sharma told him before India call up

Suryakumar Yadav is now not only one of Mumbai Indians' (MI) most vital players, he has also become an indispensable part of Team India's white-ball sides. SKY had a turnaround ever since he moved back to the MI camp in IPL 2018. From IPL 2018-2020, he was among runs and finally got his chance to make an India debut in early 2021.

Since then, it has been no looking back for the highly-talented SKY. However, he had to see several rejections and also had an epic stare-off with Virat Kohli during MI's face-off versus Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2020's business end. With both sides squaring off once again in the league stage, on October 28 at Abu Dhabi, SKY's impressive 43-ball 79* propelled MI to an easy five-wicket win over RCB in pursuit of a modest 165.

During SKY's stay in the middle, he was toying with the RCB bowlers with ease and finding the gaps at regular intervals. In order to get into his skin and dent his concentration, senior pro and then RCB captain Kohli stormed towards SKY as the two had an intense stare-off in between overs.&nbsp;

In an episode on Breakfast With Champions, SKY recalled the whole episode with then India captain Kohli while speaking with&nbsp;host Gaurav Kapur.

"He (Kohli) has a unique style, his energy is of a different level on the ground. That game was so important for both the teams. His sledging was on another level in that match. And I was focused that come what may, I have to win the match for the team, without speaking anything," the stylish right-handed batsman said.

"I was dead scared inside as he walked towards me, both of us were eating chewing gums. There was a voice from inside that was telling me - come what may, you don't have to utter a word, it's a matter of 10 seconds, the next over will begin. My bat fell that time, that helped me, I did not see him till the time the match was over. I was looking down and batting and we have not even discussed the incident ever outside the pitch," he added.

In IPL 2022, MI and RCB have locked horns with each other once so far. Faf du Plessis-led RCB thrashed Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai by seven wickets in chase of 152, despite SKY's belligerent 37-ball 68.

&nbsp;Pace bowling sensation Umran Malik could be fast-tracked into the Indian team as early as June when it will play seven T20 Internationals against South Africa and Ireland respectively.

India will play South Africa in a five-match T20 International series at home (June 9, 12, 14, 17, 20) and two matches in Ireland's Malahide (June 26, 28) where a second-string team comprising white-ball specialists will be plying their trade as the big guns prepare for the series-deciding fifth Test against England, starting early July.

Umran was a net bowler during India's last World T20 campaign in the UAE.

The BCCI is keen on having a bigger pool of fast bowlers going into the upcoming World T20 in Australia and

Umran, with his scorching pace, has a high probability of making it to the squad if all goes well and he remains fit over the next two months.

The pool of premier bowlers whose workload management will be paramount are Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj, Deepak Chahar (if fit), Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav.

The three bowlers from the fringe pack, who might get a go in some of the 20 plus T20I matches in the run-up to the World Cup are Umran and left-armers T Natarajan and Arshdeep Singh, all of whom have been impressive in the IPL.

Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling coach and fast bowling legend Dale Steyn has termed the Jammu man a "genius".

"My job with Umran is to ensure he runs fast and make players play differently. My job is to try and make him forward-thinking as to what the batters are planning on doing.

"It's exciting for us to sit back and watch what a genius he is. I don't want to turn him into what I was, all I want is his geniuses to come out," Steyn said on 'Star Sports' 'Cricket Live' programme.

It is understood that chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma and his committee will be keeping a close eye on Umran, who is now India's fastest bowler by a distance, regularly clocking 152 plus (approx 95 miles/hr).

He has nine wickets from six games for SRH this season and the manner in which he intimidated an established international batter like KKR's Shreyas Iyer was an exhilarating sight.

Sunil Gavaskar, commentating for the IPL broadcasters, said that Malik will become more lethal once he is able to stop spraying deliveries on leg-stump and wide off it.

"A lot of guys who bowl at that speed tend to spray the ball around but Umran bowls very few wide deliveries. If he can control the wides down the leg side, he will be a tremendous bowler because that will mean he'll be attacking the stumps all the time, and with his pace, it's not easy to hit straight.

"If he bowls wicket-to-wicket, he's going to be pretty much an unplayable bowler. He's going to play for India," Gavaskar said.

Former opener WV Raman, one of the most respected voices in Indian cricket, feels that time is ripe for Umran to be drafted into the Team India set-up straightaway.

"He is a special talent. He has pace and now he is slowly picking up the ropes of fast bowling. When a young bowler has pace, don't wait for three seasons before you blood him.

"If he is young and as quick as Umran is, you should seriously look at him," Raman, who has been a former NCA batting coach, apart from working with KKR and the Indian women's team, told PTI.

"When Umran is bowling, you could hear that the ball is hitting the bat. But also when you have a bowler like that bowling at 150 consistently, then you also need good slip catchers as the ball will travel at quite a speed," Raman added.

Raman also analysed that when it comes to express pace bowlers, they have a better chance of making their international debut much earlier compared to batters, who are doing well in IPL.

"If you look at our batting unit, we have a lot of experience and if you are an uncapped player making a mark as a specialist batter within No. 4, it is a bit difficult to get a look-in. After that you have multi-dimensional cricketers coming in.

"Also you will produce more quality batters than bowlers. Therefore when a special bowler comes in the horizon, he is bound to create a certain degree of interest," Raman explained.

Former selector Devang Gandhi, however, feels that raw pace can be counter-productive as batters at international level can score quick runs.

"I believe that India will bank on experience going into the World Cup considering that Australian pitches for the ICC tourney will be great for batting.

"But having said that, in the run-up to the World T20 you can check out on various options and there is no harm if they decide to try out Umran and see what he can bring to the table," Gandhi, a member of the last selection committee, said.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pacer T Natarajan has been impressive so far in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The left-arm pacer has been the leading wicket-taker for his franchise and has continued his heroics in the death overs once again this season. Natarajan, who is known for his ability to nail perfect yorkers under pressure, is one of the best death over bowlers in the tournament at present.

Natarajan had risen to prominence after his brilliant campaign with SRH in IPL 2020 where he picked up 16 wickets in 16 matches for his team and was later called up in the Indian team. Natarajan went on to have an impressive tour of Australia with the Indian team and made his limited-overs and Test debut on the same tour.

However, his progress was hampered due to injuries and fitness issues as he had to spend several months on the sidelines. Natarajan managed to play only 2 matches in IPL 2021 for SRH and was later released by the franchise. However, he was bought back for Rs 4 crore (INR 40 million) at the mega auction and has returned to his best once again this year.

Natarajan finished with figures of 3/37 in SRH's clash against Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday as he helped his side attain a comfortable 7-wicket win against the Shreyas Iyer-led side. He has so far picked up 11 wickets in just 5 games this season and is the second-highest wicket-taker of the tournament so far.

Lauding him for his bowling heroics, former England captain Michael Vaughan has urged the Indian selectors to keep an eye on Natarajan and ensure that he is in the scheme of things for the national team ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 this year. Vaughan said the selectors will be silly not to look at Natarajan as he brings variety with his left-arm pace.

"Looking at India, I think they'd be silly not to look at him. He's a left-armer; the angle that the left-armers bring bowling in the backend of the innings when the pitches just start to grip, they can protect certain sections of the ground," Vaughan said on Cricbuzz.

"A number of good T20 teams have one or two left-arm seamers in their attacks. If I was an Indian selector, I would be keeping a close eye on him," added the former England skipper.
