Rohit Sharma’s Team India has reached the final of the Asia Cup 2023&nbsp;after a spin-dominated day in Colombo. The contest played at the R.Premadasa Stadium saw India win by 41 runs while defending 213 on the board. Spinners from both sides were in top form as they scalped 16 wickets in total with India’s entire batting unit falling prey to the exploits of Dunith Wellalage (5 wickets) and Charith Asalanka (4 wickets) while Kuldeep was once again on song with four wickets for Team India.

<h2>India defend 213</h2>

Tasked to defend 213 for India, Sri Lanka did not have the best start as they lost three wickets in the first powerplay. The hosts were 25/3 before Sadeera Samarawickrama (17) and Asalanka (22) built a mini-partnership of 43 runs for the fourth wicket. India quickly gained control of the contest with another three quick-fire wickets as Sri Lanka were 99/6 with Kuldeep and Jadeja running riot with the ball.

However, India then faced a frustrating period as Sri Lanka almost gained a commanding position in the match. Dhananjaya de Silva (41) and Dunith Wellalage (42) stitched 63 runs for the seventh wicket as Sri Lanka needed just 51 runs to win the contest before the former was dismissed.

Kuldeep then wrapped the tail, ending with figures of 43/4 while Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah scalped two wickets each for India. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 172 and will have a tough task in hand when they take on Pakistan.

<h2>Sri Lanka restrict India</h2>

Earlier, the pair of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were seen in great nick before the latter was dismissed by Wellalage on his first ball of the match. Gill failed to judge the flight of the delivery and was nowhere near when he was castled on the first ball of the 12th over. The pair put together 80 runs for the opening wicket before the landslide of wickets started for India.

The 20-year-old did not sit back in his exploits as he got the better of skipper Rohit on 53 before striking big with Virat Kohli’s wicket. KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya were then in the firing line as they were dismissed for 39 and 5 respectively. Wellalage’s impact left Team India in a spot of bother as they quickly went from 80/0 to 186/9, losing nine wickets in a span of 106 runs. India were finally bowled out for 213 in 49.1 overs.

India will now take on Bangladesh on Friday, September 15 with qualification already secured while Sri Lanka will take on Pakistan on Thursday in a virtual knockout. The winner of Sri Lanka vs Pakistan will likely face India in the final on Sunday at the same venue.

Team India faced a big reality check at the Asia Cup 2023 on Tuesday, September 12 against Sri Lanka as Dunith Wellalage scalped a five-for at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The Super Four clash started on a positive note for the record champions of the continent, but it was all Wellalage and Charith Asalanka who dominated after the first powerplay to help Sri Lanka restrict India to a low total.

Monday's hero Virat Kohli had an off day as he was dismissed for three while Rohit Sharma completed 10,000 ODI runs before he departed.

Asia Cup 2023: Dunith Wellalage wreaks havoc against in-form Team India with five-for in Colombo

On Tuesday (September 12), Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma created history by becoming the fastest to 5,000 ODI runs during the Super Four clash between India and Sri Lanka in Asia Cup 2023 in Colombo. While Kohli and Rohit didn't add a lot of runs for the second wicket, after Shubman Gill's departure (19), the duo attained a historic feat of scoring more than 5,000 ODI runs together in just 86 innings.&nbsp;

Over the years, Kohli and Rohit have formed a formidable pair for India, especially in ODIs.&nbsp;It is to be noted that their partnership boasts an impressive average of 62.47, including 18 century and as many as 15 half-century partnerships. Thus, owing to their superior record, they are&nbsp;the eighth-best pair in the history of ODI cricket.

Before Rohit-Kohli,&nbsp;West Indies legends Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes were the quickest pair to reach 5,000 ODI runs (in 97 innings). The list is followed by&nbsp;the Aussie pair of Matthew Hayden/Adam Gilchrist (104), and Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka (105).

IND vs SL Weather Update: Will rain wash out India vs Sri Lanka Super Four Asia Cup 2023 match in Colombo?

India's star batter Shreyas Iyer is out of the national side's Super Four face-off versus Sri Lanka, in Colombo, on Tuesday (September 12) in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 edition. Iyer had a back spasm just before the India-Pakistan clash, which kicked off on Sunday afternoon (September 10) and ended on Monday evening (September 11), on the reserve day. With Iyer out of action versus Pakistan, KL Rahul replaced him at the last minute and slammed an impressive 111 not out in India's big win over arch-rivals Pakistan (by 228 runs).&nbsp;

Now, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reported that Iyer will continue to sit out due to his back issues. Ahead of the Sri Lanka game on Tuesday afternoon, BCCI said in a statement, "Shreyas Iyer is feeling better but is yet to fully recover from back spasm. He has been advised rest by the BCCI Medical Team and has not travelled with the team to the stadium today for India's Super 4 match against Sri Lanka."

Iyer returned to the Indian team after a long time. In early 2023, during the home Border-Gavaskar Trophy versus Australia, the right-hander was deemed unfit due to his persistent back issues. While the Indian team management kept a close watch on his recovery, he missed a lot of action at the highest level before joining the Indian squad for the Asia Cup. Iyer played India's tournament-opener, versus Pakistan, where he looked good in his short stay (14) before his back issues resurfaced prior to the toss of the India-Pakistan Super Four clash.&nbsp;

With the ODI World Cup less than a month away from commencement, on October 05 in Ahmedabad, India, Iyer's fitness will be closely monitored by Team India. It is to be noted that all the participating teams can make changes to their 15-man squad until September 28.

IND vs SL Asia Cup 2023: Head-to-head record of India vs Sri Lanka, pitch report, weather update & more

India thrashed Pakistan by 228 runs in their Super Four face-off in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 edition, in Colombo, on Monday (September 12). There were a lot of positives for Rohit Sharma-led Team India during their marquee clash versus the arch-rivals. While captain Rohit Sharma (56) and Shubman Gill (58)'s 121-run opening stand set the tone for India after they were asked to bat first, Virat Kohli (122 not out) and KL Rahul (unbeaten 111) propelled India to a mammoth 356 for 2. In reply, Pakistan were bundled out for a paltry 128 in 32 overs.&nbsp;

With the ball, Kuldeep Yadav shined with a 5 for 25 but Jasprit Bumrah also made an impression while bowling for the first time in ODIs since July 2022. While he only bowled five overs, he ended with 18 for 1, dismissing Imam-ul-Haq. Bumrah made his international comeback after a lengthy injury layoff (due to back issues). He made his comeback in the Ireland T20Is, last month in Dublin, and ended with four scalps to return with the Player-of-the-Match award. However, his ODI return was keenly awaited with the World Cup set to kick off early next month in India. Thus, his superb five-over spell versus Pakistan pleased many, including former Indian opener Little Master Sunil Gavaskar.

<h2>'Even a world-class batter like Babar Azam could not determine where the ball was going'</h2>

Speaking to Sports Tak’s Vikrant Gupta, Gavaskar lauded Bumrah and said, "Jasprit Bumrah was also in great rhythm. He was running in and swinging the ball both ways was some great bowling. Even a world-class batter like Babar Azam could not determine where the ball was going. This Indian team is ready and I hope they continue this rhythm in the Asia Cup and the World Cup."

Gavaskar further hailed India's all-round efforts and added, "If the game against Pakistan would’ve been washed out, there would have been doubts over India being able to reach the final. It was an all-round performance from India and they registered a fantastic victory against Pakistan. India completely dominated Pakistan."

Asia Cup: Bumrah looked in great rhythm - Gavaskar lauds pacer after India's massive win over Pakistan

India rode on Virat Kohli's majestic 122 not out, KL Rahul's unbeaten 111 and Kuldeep Yadav's five-fer to dismantle Pakistan in the two-day Super Four clash in the ongoing Asia Cup on Monday (September 11). The match kicked off on Sunday afternoon (September 10) with Babar Azam-led Men in Green opting to bowl first at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Captain Rohit Sharma's 56 and Shubman Gill's 58 set the platform for India before, at 147 for 2 in 24.1 overs, persistent rain and&nbsp;wet outfield pushed the game to the reserve day&nbsp;on Monday.

On Monday, Kohli and Rahul's unbeaten 233-run third-wicket stand took India to 356 for 2. In reply, Kuldeep Yadav's 5 for 25 dismissed Pakistan for 128 in 32 overs to take the Men in Blue to a massive 228-run win, their biggest ODI win,&nbsp;in terms of runs,&nbsp;over the arch-rivals. After the clash, Rahul revealed the last-minute change of calls which led to him being added to the playing XI.

Rahul, who is returning to international cricket after a long gap following&nbsp;a hip injury, was not supposed to play the Super Four tie versus Pakistan. However, Shreyas Iyer -- another returnee from a long injury break (due to pertinent back issues) -- skipped the match due to a back spasm, forcing Rahul's early comeback in the XI.&nbsp;

Talking to the Asia Cup broadcasters, Rahul revealed how he was added to the final XI at the last minute. "You know once you come back from injury, it's really hard and I have had a lot of injuries in last few years so it's been very tough but when you have been sitting out for five months, watching matches on TV, you are ready to do anything after returning. Really happy that I could do the job for the team," Rahul said.

Rahul further added, "Five minutes before the toss, Rahul bhai came and told me that I might have to play because Shreyas got a back spasm. And I had not brought any batting gear, did not get my batting t-shirts, or skins. I had come only knowing that I would be carrying water and had brought only one full-sleeved t-shirt.&nbsp;So, at the last minute, the manager had to run to the hotel and get my stuff. But this has not happened for the first time, so mentally, I know what to do when I am thrown in the ring."

The Indian team management will be relieved with Rahul's fitness. The former white-ball vice-captain not only slammed an impressive 106-ball 111, laced with 12 fours and 2 sixes at&nbsp;104.72 -- but also kept wickets for the majority part of the Pakistan run-chase. It will be interesting to see if Rahul features in the playing XI for India's face-off versus Sri Lanka, on Tuesday (September 12) as Rohit &amp; Co. will be on the field for the third successive day.&nbsp;

Asia Cup: 'Rahul Dravid told me....': KL Rahul reveals last-minute call to play Super Four game vs Pakistan

On July 06, 2019, Rohit Sharma created history as he became the first-ever batter to slam as many as five centuries in a single edition of the ICC ODI World Cup. The current Indian captain was in exceptional form in the previous edition of the 50-over showpiece event and entered the record books with his fifth ton, becoming the first-ever batsman to attain the feat. He also equalled Sachin Tendulkar with the most hundreds in ODI World Cup history (six) following his knock versus the Sri Lankans.

Four years back, India faced Sri Lanka in the 2019 ODI World Cup on July 06. Opting to bat first, Dimuth Karunaratne-led Sri Lanka were struggling at 55 for 4 before former skipper Angelo Mathews slammed 113 and helped Lanka post&nbsp;264 for 7 in 50 overs. In reply, India rode on openers Rohit and KL Rahul's 189-run opening stand. Rohit returned with a fine 94-ball 103 whereas Rahul top-scored with a sublime 113. Thus, India won the game by eight wickets without dropping much sweat, achieving&nbsp;the target with 39 balls to spare.

Talking about Rohit's knock, his inning was laced with 14 fours and two sixes, resulting&nbsp;in a strike rate of 109.57. Throughout the 2019 ODI WC, the Hitman was in unbelievable form. The then vice-captain started his campaign with a hundred versus South Africa and followed it up with a match-winning 140 versus Pakistan before scoring three centuries on the trot -- against England, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Opting to bat first, Dimuth Karunaratne-led Sri Lanka were struggling at 55 for 4 before former skipper Angelo Mathews slammed 113 and helped Lanka post 264 for 7 in 50 overs. OTD, in 2019: Rohit Sharma became first-ever batter to slam five tons in single edition of ODI World Cup

MS Dhoni remains the only international captain to have won all three ICC titles. During his captaincy, India became mentally strong&nbsp;in tough situations in multi-nation events, believed in taking&nbsp;the game deep, backed multi-dimensional players and emphasised on fielding. Dhoni took several memorable decisions as captain, which changed the course of Indian cricket, but some of his calls raised eyebrows.

During India's tour of Australia in 2011/12, they were whitewashed in the four Tests and had a poor run in the tri-series, also involving Sri Lanka, in early 2012. Back then, Dhoni introduced a rotational policy where he did not play&nbsp;India's top three -- Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir -- together before their&nbsp;must-win game versus the Lankans in Hobart.

As a result, India were not consistent and won only three out of eight matches. It is believed that Dhoni resorted to the rotational policy to accommodate Rohit Sharma in the line-up, keeping the 2015 ODI World Cup in mind (also held in Australia), along with having better fielders in the playing XI.&nbsp;Back in 2019, Gambhir recalled Dhoni's rotational policy and slammed it, calling it 'absolute crap'.

<h2>'It was absolute crap. If you make a decision, then back it'</h2>

Four years back, in an interview with Lallantop, Gambhir pointed out, "As far as the rotation policy goes, it was absolute crap and I’ve always maintained it. I have always believed that players are supposed to follow their captain’s decision but if you ask me, it was complete crap. If he believed in the rotation policy so much, then he should have stuck to it. He started with the rotation policy but played all three in the must-win games. If you make a decision, then back it."

“If you were preparing for the 2015 World Cup, then you shouldn’t have thought if you’re going to win this CV series or the one after this. It shouldn’t be like this. You began the policy but after four matches, when the results didn’t come, when questions began to be asked, then you start playing all three. That’s why I believe it was a complete waste of time If you play for your country, you should play your best team," the former batter added.

India's last game in the tri-series was against Sri Lanka, a must-win for them. Chasing a daunting 321, the Men in Blue had to pull off the run-chase in less than 40 overs to have any chance of qualifying for the finals. They rode on Sehwag-Sachin's blistering start, Gambhir's 64-ball 63, Virat Kohli's majestic 133&nbsp;not out and Suresh Raina's unbeaten 24-ball 40 to win by seven wickets. However,&nbsp;they still could not feature in the best of three finals.

Australia defeated Sri Lanka, 2-1, in a best-of-three final to win the tournament Down Under.

THROWBACK | I told Dhoni it was crap: When Gambhir rejected his former skipper's rotational policy

On Sunday (April 02), India celebrated the 12th anniversary of the senior men's cricket team's historic 2011 ODI World Cup triumph. Back in 2011, MS Dhoni-led Team India won the 50-over World Cup after 28 years and became the first nation to win the tournament on home soil. It was Sachin Tendulkar's final CWC and the team gave their all to win the coveted title for the first time after 1983.&nbsp;

Recently,&nbsp;Star Sports conducted&nbsp;a special show recalling the CWC'11 which featured members of the then Indian team such as Virender Sehwag, S Sreesanth, Harbhajan Singh and Yusuf Pathan. During the show, Sehwag -- who played a key role in India's campaign with a hundred versus Bangladesh and blistering knocks against South Africa, England and Pakistan -- revealed how Sreesanth complained of not being able to breathe during the tournament finale, at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai where Men in Blue faced Kumar Sangakkara's Sri Lanka.

“You didn't even bowl half your quota. You were complaining 'I'm not being able to breathe' just after bowling 2 to 3 overs and went out," said Sehwag. To this, Sreesanth responded, "I did get a heatstroke because I went to the gym earlier that morning as I felt I won't get a chance in the playing XI. Harbhajan told me to stay ready but he was doing this since quarterfinals, so I felt he can make the cut straight into the finals. But Jai Mata Di I got a chance."

The former Indian opener then revealed the ultimatum given to Sreesanth. he said, "We got him back on the field after saying if you don't bowl now then please don't play cricket ever in the future."

The ex-speedster then recalled Sachin's words and said, "When I was inside the dressing room, Sachin came during the drinks break. He said ‘Sree chupchap andar aaja aur bowl daal. Mahi bula raha hain’. (Dhoni has asked you to return so come back and bowl without saying anything) and I went."

In the CWC'11 final, India took on Sri Lanka as the Islanders opted to bat first. Sl rode on Mahela Jayawardene's 103 to post 274-6 and India were reduced to 31 for 2 before Gautam Gambhir's 97 and Dhoni's 91 took India to 277 for 4 to win by six wickets. Taking about the guests who featuered in Star's show, Sreesanth ended with 8-0-52-0 whereas Sehwag fell for a golden duck in the summit clash. Harbhajan managed to take a wicket whereas Yusuf Pathan was replaced by Suresh Raina in the knockouts of the mega event.

Virat Kohli shines as India beat Sri Lanka by highest ever ODI margin of 317 runs

Team India secured a historic victory in the third and final match of their series against Sri Lanka, defeating the team by 317 runs in Thiruvananthapuram. This broke the previous record for the largest victory by runs in ODIs, which was held by New Zealand with a 290 run win against Ireland in 2008. India chose to bat first and scored 390/5 in fifty overs, while Sri Lanka's run-chase was cut short in just 22 overs as they only managed to reach 73 runs.

The star of the match was Indian batter Virat Kohli, who had an incredible performance and scored an unbeaten 166 off 110 deliveries, hitting 13 fours and eight sixes. Young Indian opener Shubman Gill also had a strong performance, scoring 116 off 97 deliveries and forming a 131-run partnership with Kohli.

Following Gill's dismissal, Kohli took over the offensive and dominated the Sri Lankan bowlers. He brought his 150 off 106 deliveries, and in the last 10 overs, he scored 86 runs in just 34 balls.

With this victory, India won the three-match series 3-0 against Sri Lanka, having already defeated them by 67 runs in the opening match in Guwahati and by four wickets in the second game at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Next, India will be facing New Zealand in a three-match ODI series. While Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be a part of the team, KL Rahul will not be present due to personal commitments, and Axar Patel will be replaced by Shahbaz Ahmed.

India's record ODI victory: Rohit and company defeat Sri Lanka by a mammoth 317 runs, Lankans collapse at 73

Yuvraj Singh, the former Indian cricketer, took to Twitter on Sunday to express his disappointment over the low turnout during the 3rd ODI being played between India and Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram. The match was of little consequence for the three-match series, as team India has already won the first two matches. However, it was the first ODI to be played in Thiruvananthapuram since 2018, and it was expected that there would be a high level of interest from the crowd. The attendance was not at capacity, and there were empty seats visible throughout the stands.

Yuvraj took to Twitter during the match and asked the question, "But concern for me half empty stadium? Is one-day cricket dying?" He expressed his sadness that people were not showing interest in a home match involving the Indian cricket team.

It is true that there is an abundance of cricket being played across different formats, but the lack of interest in a match involving the Indian team is still disappointing. The warm and humid weather in Kerala also may have played a role in the low attendance, but it is clear that the turnout would have been higher if fans were more interested in the game.

T20 cricket has become increasingly popular in recent years. With a shorter time commitment and action-packed gameplay, it's easy to see why it appeals to fans around the world. Additionally, cricket leagues that take place in various countries throughout the year have contributed to the sport's growing popularity. This rise in popularity has led to a decline in interest in the longer versions of the game.

Well played @ShubmanGill hopefully goes on to make a 💯 @imVkohli batting at the other end looking Solid ! But concern for me half empty stadium ? Is one day cricket dying ? #IndiavsSrilanka — Yuvraj Singh (@YUVSTRONG12) January 15, 2023 × It is true that there is an abundance of cricket being played across different formats, but the lack of interest in a match involving the Indian team is still disappointing. The warm and humid weather in Kerala also may have played a role in the low attendance, but it is clear that the turnout would have been higher if fans were more interested in the game. Is one-day cricket dying? Yuvraj Singh sounds warning bells after low turnout in India vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI

On Thursday (January 12), Rohit Sharma-led India defeated Sri Lanka by four wickets in pursuit of 216 at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata to earn an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. After winning the series opener by 67 runs, in Guwahati, India dismissed the Lankans for 215 in 39.4 overs before attaining the target in 43.2&nbsp;overs with four wickets in hand.&nbsp;

While Md Siraj (3 for 30) and Kuldeep Yadav (3 for 51) were the star performers with the ball, India managed to get past the finish line in the run-chase, after tottering at 86 for 4, courtesy of KL Rahul's gritty 64&nbsp;not out and vital contributions from Rohit, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Kuldeep (10 not out). Meanwhile, Virat Kohli -- who scored his second successive&nbsp;ton during&nbsp;Guwahati ODI -- perished for a nine-ball 4; being cleaned up by Lahiru Kumara.

After Kohli's dismissal, many on social media platforms criticised his ability to bat under pressure. However, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir backed Kohli and said on Star Sports, "Virat Kohli is there because he is Virat Kohli. He has scored tough runs for India whenever needed."

At times, Kohli's critics do question his ability to perform under pressure, especially in ICC knockouts, however, he still has done well in many such games (for instance, during the&nbsp;Champions Trophy 2013 and final, 2017 CT semi-final, T20 World Cup 2014 semi-final and final,&nbsp;semis of 2016 and 2022 editions) but failed to get going in CT'17 finale, 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cup knockouts and 2021 WTC summit clash. On the other hand, there is no doubting his abilities to score tough runs in bilaterals across formats and bail the team out in crisis. He has done that on innumerable occasions throughout his career.

Kohli will definitely aim for a big score in the third and final ODI, in&nbsp;Thiruvananthapuram, on Sunday (January 15).&nbsp;

Talking about the second and penultimate ODI between India and Sri Lanka, Dasun Shanaka &amp; Co. opted to bat first but only managed 215 in 39.4 overs after being well-placed at 102 for 1. In reply, India was tottering at 86 for 4 before KL Rahul's 64 not out propelled them to a four-wicket win, with 40 balls to spare.

At the post-match presentation, Rohit was asked if India will tinker with their winning combination and give a chance to the benched players. To this, he said, "We haven't thought about it yet, once we get there we'll have a look at the pitch and have a look at some of our guys. There are 3 ODIs coming up against New Zealand as well, so we need to keep the guys fresh. We've got a long season now and we need to keep everything in mind. If needed, we'll make some changes."

India defeated Sri Lanka by 67 runs in the first ODI, in Guwahati, to go 1-0 up in the three-match series on Tuesday (January 10). Ahead of the second and penultimate ODI, at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin has slammed KL Rahul for not being consistent and finding different ways to get out.

In the ODI series opener, India rode on skipper Rohit Sharma's 83, Shubman Gill's 70 and Virat Kohli's 113 not out to post 373/7. Later, India defended the total by restricting Sri Lanka to 306 for 8, to win by 67 runs. Talking about Rahul, he donned the wicketkeeping gloves and made a 29-ball 39. Just when he was looking set, he departed after being cleaned up by pacer&nbsp;Kasun Rajitha.

Thus, Azhar told PTI, "I think Rahul is getting out in a lot of manners. Primarily, it is not the good balls that are getting him out. It is poor shot selection first up that is causing problems," said Azhar, who further added that the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper should work with the coaches to rectify his batting flaws.

"I think consistency is the problem in KL Rahul's case. But I think there are coaches who should rectify his flaws. In my opinion, he is a good player but consistency is missing in his game," Azharuddin was quoted as saying by the news agency.

Rahul, the former vice-captain, will need to pull up his socks given Ishan Kishan -- who scored a double ton in his last ODI -- is waiting in the wings. The stylish right-hander will be hungry for some big knocks in the remaining SL ODIs.

'Poor shot selection is causing problems': Azhar slams India batter for 'getting out in a lot of manners'

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir was known for being a dependent batter for India across formats and playing with a lot of aggression. Post his retirement, he dons the role of a commentator-cum-expert and doesn't shy away from making big statements. Ahead of the second and penultimate ODI between India and Sri Lanka, at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Thursday (January 12), Gambhir claimed that 'Rohit Sharma is a better player than Ricky Ponting'.

Speaking to Star Sports, in the pre-match panel discussion, Gambhir made the glaring remark when the host reminded him that Rohit is just one hundred away from equalling Ponting's tally in the format (30 tons). Just then, Gambhir summed up the discussion by saying, "Rohit Sharma is a better player than Ricky Ponting because Ricky Ponting has a shit record in the subcontinent."

Speaking about Ponting and Rohit's numbers, Punter was Australia's Mr. Dependable across formats -- though T20Is came very late during his career. He did struggle in Asian conditions, with only one solitary hundred in India in Tests but still ended with 11 centuries overall in the subcontinent. He ended with&nbsp;13,378 and&nbsp;13,704 runs in Tests and ODIs, respectively.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Rohit is a white-ball legend and has come to his own in Tests since late 2019. He still doesn't have great numbers in ODIs in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and South Africa whereas he&nbsp;recently slammed his first overseas ton in whites during India's tour of England in 2021.

Rohit Sharma better player than Ricky Ponting as Australian has s*** record in subcontinent: Gautam Gambhir

Rohit Sharma-led India have locked horns with Sri Lanka in the second and penultimate ODI on Thursday (January 12), at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata. At the coin toss, Dasun Shanaka once again called it right as the Islanders have opted to bat first in a bid to level the series after losing the opener by 67 runs in Guwahati.&nbsp;

As India will hope to restrict the Lankans for a low total, captain Rohit will also aim to surpass AB de Villiers in an elite list. Rohit needs 41 runs to surpass De Villiers in the list of most runs in men's ODIs. At present, Hitman has&nbsp;9,537 runs in 236 matches, including three double tons. He averages 48.90 with a strike rate of 89.64.

De Villiers, who announced a shocking international&nbsp;retirement&nbsp;in May 2018, ended his stellar run in ODIs with 9,577 runs at 53.50 and a strike rate of&nbsp;101.09. Not only de Villiers, Rohit can also overtake&nbsp;Adam Gilchrist in this list. He needs 83 runs to move past the former keeper-batter's run-tally (9,619). Given Rohit loves batting at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, expect&nbsp;him to come out all guns blazing in the second innings.

After losing the toss, Rohit said, "I was in two minds. Wanted to bat first because of how we played last time, but looking at this ground, I wanted to field. Overall, improvements are as a team, nothing in particular. What we've done in the past is in the past, we need to look ahead and keep doing better. I love playing here, the crowd is also energetic and that motivates me always. But it is in the past, I need to start fresh. One enforced change for us, Chahal in the last game put in a dive and hasn't recovered well today, so Kuldeep Yadav comes in."

India is set to host the 2023 ODI World Cup in October-November. It will be the first time that India will solely host the showpiece event and the ardent Indian cricket fans have their hopes pinned on Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. During the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka, in Guwahati on Tuesday (January 10), former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir -- an integral part of the MS Dhoni-led Indian team when they lifted the ODI World Cup in 2011 (co-hosted by India, SL and Bangladesh) -- narrated an unheard story&nbsp;from the ODI WC final, held 12 years back in Mumbai.

India met Sri Lanka in the title clash in the 2011 edition&nbsp;at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The Islanders rode on Mahela Jayawardene's sublime ton to post a challenging 274 for 6 in 50 overs. In reply, India were 31 for 2 before being 114 for 3 with Gambhir and Dhoni getting together for the fourth wicket. The duo stitched a memorable 109-run stand and took India past the finish line, with six wickets in hand, courtesy of Gambhir's 97 and then captain Dhoni's 91 not out. While Dhoni finished it off in style, with a six in the penultimate over, Gambhir weathered the early storm and set it up for India. He, however, missed out on becoming the first Indian to slam a hundred in the WC final; falling short by three runs.

Speaking to Star Sports during the 1st ODI match between India and Sri Lanka on Tuesday, Gambhir recalled how supportive Dhoni was during his memorable&nbsp;knock and pushed him to get to his century.

“MS Dhoni was very supportive because he wanted me to get a 100. He always wanted me to get a hundred. He told me between overs as well that 'get your hundred, take your time and don't rush into it. I can accelerate if there is any need to',” Gambhir revealed.

Despite Dhoni's encouragement, Gambhir fell short of reaching the triple-figure mark. Nonetheless, Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh (21 not out) took India home as they lifted the mega title after 28 years. Will Rohit &amp; Co. replicate the same feat later this year? Only time will tell...

He returned to India in 2015 and 2018 as a guest for events.It was Pele`s penultimate match of his career. He stayed only a day in Kolkata and played his final match a week later. IND vs SL: Football legend Pele to be honoured at Kolkata's Eden Gardens during 2nd ODI

India faced Sri Lanka in the three-match ODI series opener on Tuesday (January 10) in Guwahati. Being asked to bat first, India rode on captain Rohit Sharma's 83,&nbsp; Shubman Gill's 70 and Virat Kohli's 87-ball 113 to post a mammoth 373 for 7 and later defended the total with Sri Lanka managing 306 for 8 in their full quota of overs. Thus, India kicked off their 2023 ODI World Cup preparations in style with an easy 67-run win as former captain Kohli set the platform with his 45th ton in the format, 73rd overall.

Kohli came out to bat, at No. 3, with India well-placed courtesy an impressive 143-run opening stand between Rohit and Gill. Kohli stitched handy stands with Shreyas Iyer (28) and KL Rahul (39) to slam an impressive ton. His inning was a mixture of finding the boundaries and running hard between wickets but the former skipper wasn't pleased with vice-captain Hardik Pandya turning down a run during their 27-run fifth-wicket stand. The incident took place in the 43rd over when Kohli and Hardik completed a run but the former was keen to sneak in another single. Just then, he looked at Hardik and tried to persuade him but the vice-captain refused and turned down the chance to complete a double. Kohli wasn't impressed with Hardik and gave him a stare. The video of the incident has now gone viral on social media platforms:
