I'm a proud Indian: Mohammed Shami lashes out at trolls over ‘Sajda’ controversy during ODI World Cup

India batter Shreyas Iyer brushed aside any short-ball concerns after his match-winning knock of 82 off 56 balls against Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup 2023 match on November 4. Iyer's innings ensured that India posted a total in excess of 350 while batting first after being a bit bogged down in the last ten overs post wickets of Virat Kohli (88) and Shubman Gill (92).

Talking at the post-match press conference, Iyer gave a rather blunt reply when asked about the problems against the short ball and asked, "When you say it's a problem for me, what do you mean?"

"Have you seen how many pull shots I've scored, especially which has gone for four?" he added.

As per ESPNCricninfo stats, Iyer's strike rate against the short ball has been a healthy 135.44 in ODIs with an average of 21.40 - suggesting that he gets out a lot against the deliveries. That, however, doesn't undermine his ability to play the short length on which he has hit almost 20% of his fours - 34 of 191 in his career.

Talking about his dismissals against the short-pitched balls, Iyer said: "You know if you try to hit a ball, you're bound to get out anyway whether it's a short ball or overpitched. If I get bowled two or three times, you all would say he can't play an inswinging ball, he can't play if the ball is seaming. You guys have created that mahol [feeling] outside that he can't play a short ball, and I feel that people are picking that up every now and then and it plays on your mind regularly and you keep working on that."

Iyer came in to bat in the 30th over and was close to his century before getting out in the 48th over after hitting two back-to-back sixes. The batter, however, did not rue missing out on the century and hoped he'd get another chance to score in the matches to come.

"This is the stage where you play for the team. You don't play for your individual performance. We definitely discuss about missing out on centuries or half-centuries. But going forward, say if we are put in a similar situation, I would have to take on the bowlers. If I was batting in the 47th or 48th over, I won't be thinking of the century.
Mohammed Shami bowled a dream spell of 5/18 against Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup 2023 match on November 2 as India raced to a 302-run win. During the course of his third five-wicket haul in ODI World Cups, Shami also became India's leading wicket-taker in the quadrennial tournament with 45 scalps in just 13 games.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Shami let in on the secret of his magnificent bowling and said that it is just about rhythm they have found after putting in a lot of hard work.

"All the hard work we are putting in, the rhythm we have found, it's because of that that you are getting to see this storm (on the cricket field), the incredible things our bowling unit is doing," Shami said. "The rhythm we are bowling with, I can't believe anyone will not enjoy it. So, yes, we are enjoying ourselves a lot and working together as a unit, and you are able to see the results of that."

Rohit Sharma-led India demolished Sri Lanka by 302 runs in match 33 of the ODI World Cup 2023 edition, on Thursday (Nov 2) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Being asked to bat first, India rode on Shubman Gill's 92, Virat Kohli's 88 and Shreyas Iyer's 82 to post a mammoth 357 for 8. In reply, the Lankans bundled out for 55 in 19.4 overs.

While the Indian seamers were on top of their game, especially with Mohammed Shami returning with 5 for 18, Kohli, Iyer and Gill also stood tall in the first innings. Kohli and Gill stitched an impressive 189-run second-wicket stand but none of them touched the 100-run mark. ODI WC: Former India opener BLASTS Pakistani show for RIDICULOUS claims on Team India after SL tie

India pacer Mohammed Siraj broke the bails during the ODI World Cup 2023 match on November 4 as he clean bowled Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis in the fourth over of the chase. Siraj had already taken two wickets in his first and innings' second over to leave Sri Lanka reeling at three down for two runs before accounting for Mendis.

Mendis had struggled to score one run off nine balls before Siraj cleaned him up. Bowling wide of the crease, Siraj bowled with the angle but the ball straightened up at the last moment to leave Mendis in splits and hitting the top of the off stump. The bails went flying in the air before being replaced as Sri Lanka slumped to four down for three runs in a chase of 358. Have a look at the video below:

India pacer Mohammed Siraj broke the bails during the ODI World Cup 2023 match on November 4 as he clean bowled Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis in the fourth over of the chase.

ODI World Cup 2023: WATCH | India pacer Mohammed Siraj BREAKS BAILS with menacing ball vs Sri Lanka

India skipper Rohit Sharma could have a day with destiny in less than 18 days if the dream of lifting the ODI World Cup for Team India at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday (Nov 19) is realised. However, before this, Rohit will look to emerge triumphant in Mumbai, not once but twice (if India don’t play Pakistan in the semis) as he targets another swift outing in the ODI World Cup on Thursday (Nov 2). With India taking on Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, local boy Rohit will have the opportunity to showcase his will to win the World Cup in familiar surroundings.

Can Rohit continue his impressive run?

Having so far taken the ODI World Cup by storm, the 35-year-old will look to get all the pieces right when he takes the field on Thursday. Currently the fourth-highest scorer in the tournament with 398 runs in six matches, Rohit will look to continue his impressive run. He has smashed 20 sixes so far in the World Cup, the most by any player so far in the ODI World Cup. He averages 66.33 with the highest score of 131 against Afghanistan in Pune. His tally of 43 fours is only bettered by South Africa’s Quinton de Kock's 54.

Rohit's interesting numbers

On Thursday when he takes the field against Sri Lanka, it will be the first time that Rohit will be captaining India in an ODI in his hometown Mumbai. Against England, he became just the fifth Indian in history to score 18000 runs in international cricket. The match was also his 100th as captain of the Men in Blue with him winning 74 of those, the most by any Indian captain during the period. Rohit is also the first Indian ever to win each of his first six matches as captain at the ODI World Cup.

The Indian skipper’s 87-run knock against England was his 12th fifty-plus score at the ODI World Cup, with only Sachin Tendulkar scoring more such scores with 21 in World Cup.

Rohit was awarded the Player of the Match for his efforts. He becomes only the second Indian after Shikhar Dhawan to win multiple Player of the Match awards v SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries at the ODI World Cup.

Overall, his seven Player of the Match awards at the ODI World Cup are now the second most ever after Tendulkar’s nine. Rohit has a great record against Sri Lanka in ODIs having scored the world-record 264-run knock against the islanders in 2014. Interestingly, he has scored two double hundreds against Sri Lanka in the ODI format.

So far in 2023, Rohit has been on a boundary-hitting rampage having achieved the distinction of becoming the first player ever to achieve the double of hitting 100+ fours and 50+ sixes in a calendar year in ODIs.

Rohit’s record at Wankhede

Rohit has a fine record in Tests at the venue while also keeping up with numbers in T20Is. In Tests, he scored an unbeaten 111 in his only innings at the ground. His record in T20Is at the ground is very good too, averaging 41.25 in four matches at an excellent strike rate of 158.65. He is also the only player in Indian Premier League (IPL) history to score more than 2000 runs at the Wankhede Stadium with 2020 runs at an average of 33.11 and a strike rate of 133.95.

Local boy Rohit Sharma takes centre stage at Wankhede, looks to continue impressive form

Mohammed Shami is having the best time of his life in this Cricket World Cup. After getting picked for the first time this edition for the game against New Zealand, Shami returned with two five-wicket hauls and one four-for in three matches, helping India stand tall in all those games. On Thursday against Sri Lanka, he and Mohammed Siraj punished the former champions in an Asia Cup replay to see India through by 302 runs. With this massive victory, India also became the first team to qualify for the World Cup 2023 semis.

During this course, many records were bashed, both on individual and team front.

Starting with the records related to the Indian Team, this 302-run win over Sri Lanka is the second biggest win (in terms of runs) by any team in the World Cup history, and fourth overall. It is also India’s second biggest-ever by runs in ODI format after 317-run win over the same opposition in Trivandrum earlier this year.

In a near-replay of the Asia Cup 2023 final, India dismissed Sri Lanka on 55, which is the second-lowest team total against India by any team in ODI history. The team total of 55 by Sri Lanka is also the lowest by a full-member side in the World Cup.

Shami all over Sri Lanka, record books after Mumbai outing

On Thursday against Sri Lanka, he and Mohammed Siraj punished the former champions in an Asia Cup replay to see India through by 302 runs. With this massive victory, India also became the first team to qualify for the World Cup 2023 semis. During this course, many records were bashed, both on individual and team front. ALSO READ: World Cup: Shami, Gill shine in Mumbai as India punch semis ticket with RECORD win over Sri Lanka Starting with the records related to the Indian Team, this 302-run win over Sri Lanka is the second biggest win (in terms of runs) by any team in the World Cup history, and fourth overall. CWC: Records tumble in bundle as Shami, Siraj punish Sri Lanka in Asia Cup replay to help India enter semis

Indian bowlers cannot put a foot wrong in this World Cup. In what's deemed as the best seam-bowling attack ever, the trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami tore into Sri Lanka’s line-up as India thrashed them by a massive 302 runs to seal the semis spot in this home edition. With this victory, India maintained their winning streak, standing tall in seven matches straight.

After being asked to bat first at the venue where India lifted the World Cup in 2011 against the same opposition, the home team lost captain Rohit Sharma bowled off a Jaffa by Dilshan Madushanka on four.

Both Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli got dropped a couple of times as Sri Lankan bowlers seemed to execute their plans to perfection. However, dropping these two-star players meant Sri Lanka was up for the punishment.

The right-handed pair took the attack to the opposition, starting to find gaps at will. Gill and Kohli completed their respective fifties as India eyed a huge total in Mumbai. With Sri Lankan bowlers not ready to drop guard, the contest was turning out to be exciting with each passing over.

Madushanka returned to remove the settled pair (Gill on 92 and Kohli on 88). KL Rahul got out next on 21, while Suryakumar Yadav edged one to the keeper off 12.

Shreyas Iyer made the most of this chance, smacking fours and sixes to his fifty. Ravindra Jadeja contributed with some runs, as India crossed the 300-run mark soon after. While the left-armer picked his maiden five-for on a World Cup stage, India put a mammoth total of 357 for eight in 50 overs.

Bowlers remind batters of Asia Cup nightmare

Like how it panned out the last time (during the Asia Cup final), the Indian bowlers were on the top of Sri Lankan batters, with Bumrah and Siraj removing both openers on their respective first-ball ducks.

Siraj removed Sadeera Samarawickrama and captain Kusal Mendis to reduce Sri Lanka to 3/4 at one stage.

The bowling pair kept everyone on their toes with the deadliest spell at this venue, only for star bowler Shami to come and pick two wickets in his first over; such was the situation as Sri Lanka’s scorecard read 22 for seven inside 12 overs.

None of the top-order batters had answers to this trio, which has put every batting line-up on notice.

Shami picked his second five-wicket haul of this edition, third overall, to wrap Sri Lanka on mere 55, helping India win the match their biggest margin in World Cups – 302 runs.

Siraj on fire

Having started the spell with the new ball, Siraj got the better of Dimuth Karunaratne (0) on the first ball of the innings and looked on course for back-to-back wickets when he got Sadeera Samarawickrama caught behind.

However, the new batter quickly reviewed the decision by the standing umpire, upon which he was given not out. However, Samarawickrama’s joy did not last long, and was dismissed on the fifth ball of the innings for a duck.

The star speedster would then scalp skipper Kusal Mendis for 1 on the first ball of his second over. Four of Sri Lanka’s batters were out on binary numbers of 0 and 1, which saw them in a vulnerable position.

ODI World Cup 2023: Mohammed Siraj imitates Asia Cup final with quickfire wickets, destroys SL top order

Indian opener Shubman Gill has been in superb form in 2023. Even in the ODI World Cup, he missed the opening two games but has looked in good touch despite not getting a big score. On Thursday (Nov 2), Gill scored his second fifty of the 10-team tournament when India locked horns with Sri Lanka at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in match 33. World Cup 2023: Virat misses out on Sachin Tendulkar's record in his own backyard as Madushanka denies ton

On Thursday (Nov 2), Rohit Sharma-led India locked horns with Sri Lanka in match 33 of the ODI World Cup at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Being asked to bat first, India lost captain Rohit early (4) but saw their innings being revived with a mammoth 189-run second-wicket stand between Virat Kohli (88) and Shubman Gill (92). IND vs SL, CWC '23: Kohli surpasses Tendulkar’s all-time record of most 1,000-run years in ODIs

Rohit Sharma-led India have been on a roll in the home ODI World Cup. They remain the only unbeaten team in the tournament, having won their first six games with relative ease. Ahead of their clash versus Sri Lanka on Thursday (Nov 2), head coach Chris Silverwood opened up on India's bowling attack and heaped praise on the attack with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, etc. performing brilliantly so far.

'There is no hiding it is a very good bowling attack'

"If you look at that bowling attack and you watch them operate, it is a very strong bowling attack. I think any team in the world would want an attack like that, to be honest," Silverwood told media during the team's training session prior to the India game. He opined, "But we see that as a great challenge for our guys. We see it as an opportunity to go out and play against the best and see, I mean, pit ourselves against that. But there is no hiding it is a very good bowling attack."

So far, Bumrah has accounted for 14 wickets (fourth-most), Kuldeep has ten scalps (13th), Shami has nine breakthroughs from two encounters whereas Ravindra Jadeja has got eight wickets in the mega event.

India and Sri Lanka will face each other for the first time after the Asia Cup 2023 final played in Colombo on September 17. Back then, India rode on Mohammed Siraj's 6 for 21 to dismiss the Lankans for 50 and chased down the target with ten wickets, and 263 balls to spare. Silverwood is optimistic that the defeat in the Asia Cup would 'give more motivation' to the Lankan squad, which is marred with injuries, to perform well.

"I would rather hope that the defeat in the Asia Cup would give more motivation to the boys to come out and obviously fight, show plenty of spirit and get stuck in to the Indian side. They are a very good side — we know that — we have seen them play some superb cricket this tournament so far. But I think it is a good opportunity for our boys to show what they are made of as well. Hopefully, the defeat in the Asia Cup will give motivation to the boys," the Englishman added.

The last time India and SL met at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai in the ODI World Cup was back in the 2011 edition's final. The MS Dhoni-led Men in Blue defeated the Islanders by six wickets in a chase of 274. Will the script remain in India's favour or will the Lankans break India's winning streak?

With Mohammed Shami in the team, replacing injured Hardik Pandya, the Men in Blue got new momentum and showcased their ruthless bowling skills in the last match against England.
Shubhman Gill as an opening batsman was expected to do some fireworks on the pitch, but he only managed to score 103 runs at a low average of 26 across four outings. What’s more important is that he has consistently been troubled by the pacers and could be vulnerable to Sri Lanka’s rampant new ball attack by Dilshan Madushanka and Kasun Rajitha.

Besides Gill, Mohammed Siraj and Shreyas Iyer have also underperformed for team India in this World Cup. While Siraj has picked only six wickets in as many outings, Iyer's issues against the short ball have been well exploited by the opponents.

IND vs SL Head-to-head: World Cup 2023-India vs Sri Lanka pitch report, weather update, live streaming

India have been on a roll in the ongoing home ODI World Cup. After six games, they remain the only unbeaten team with a win in each outing and are sitting at the top of the points table of the ten-team competition. Batters and bowlers have been very clinical whereas they have been delivering as a fielding unit as well.

While captain Rohit Sharma remains India's highest run-getter (398) -- fourth-most overall -- Virat Kohli is also not behind. Kohli is at the sixth spot in terms of most runs in the tournament (354 runs, including a ton) and is one century away from equalling Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar's ODI tally (49 -- most-ever). Thus, Indian fans are eagerly waiting for him to score his 49th and also register his 50th ton during the mega event.

Ahead of Pakistan's clash versus Bangladesh, in match 31 in Kolkata on Tuesday (Oct 31), Mohammed Rizwan expressed hope that Kohli would score his 49th ODI ton on his birthday, when India take on South Africa in Kolkata on Nov 5 (Sunday), and also that the star batter will slam his 50th century during the marquee event.

Rizwan said while talking to India Today, "It is nice to know that his birthday is on 5th of November. Wish him all the best and a happy birthday, though I don't celebrate mine and I don't believe in that. Wishing a great one to Virat. I hope he can get his 49th ODI hundred on his birthday. And I wish him that He could also get his 50th ODI century in this World Cup."

Kohli scored a majestic 103 not out in India's chase of 257 versus Bangladesh, in Pune, on Oct 19. He hopes to continue his good form in the tournament and reach 50 ODI tons sooner rather than later. He was out for a duck in India's latest win, which came versus defending champions England on Oct 29 in Lucknow.

Talking about India's clash versus England, they were asked to bat first and rode on captain Rohit's 87 to post 229 for 9. In reply, the Jos Buttler-led English side were dismissed for 129 in 34.5 overs with Mohammed Shami (4 for 22) and Jasprit Bumrah (3 for 32) wreaking havoc with the ball.

Rizwan-starrer Pakistan face the Bangla Tigers on Tuesday in Kolkata. Both teams are placed in the bottom half of the table with their semi-final hopes slowly but steadily fading away.

IND-W vs SL-W Asian Games 2023 Final Live: India wins gold medal at the women's cricket tournament

After his magical 6 for 21 spell in Asia Cup 2023 final, Mohammed Siraj is on cloud nine. Siraj led India's charge with the ball after Rohit Sharma & Co. were asked to bowl first in Colombo on September 17. The 29-year-old wreaked havoc with the ball as Sri Lanka folded up for 50 in 15.2 overs as Team India closed the game with a 10-wicket win with 263 balls to spare. After his best spell in the format, Siraj climbed to the top spot in ICC ODI Rankings for bowlers on Wednesday (September 20). Now, he has won praise from AB de Villiers, his former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) teammate and South Africa great AB de Villiers.

De Villiers, speaking on his 360 show, pointed out that Siraj never gives up and his four-wicket over broke the back of Sri Lanka's batting line-up in the final of the continental tournament.

'Bowlers I respect the most are guys who never give up'

De Villiers said, "I think what stands out with him is his attitude, and we've spoken about this before on this series. Your attitude can really uplift you if you never give up. And if you keep trying and you make your attitude, catch you with your teammates, the people want you there. The fans want you there, and that's where you start doing some brilliant things and special things on the park. And Mohammad Siraj is one of those players. He always just keeps coming back. He's always in your face and I've mentioned this before. The bowlers that I respect the most are the guys that never gave up. That would always compete for every single ball, be in your face. And that's what Mohammad Siraj does."

The former South African captain added, "Well, he's not scared of trying his short ball. He's there in the batter's face. He's always trying to get you out. And the batter can feel that. And Sri Lanka certainly felt that in the final. Uh, what a fantastic turnaround. The thing that stands out, as I mentioned earlier, is he keeps trying. He's always in your face. His catches are in place and his attitude is spot on for the perfect fast bowler. If I can say that, he's always gonna keep trying. Congratulations, India. Congratulations, Siraj, with that final, the figures in the final, Simply incredible. And then we saw that, incredible over. Wicket, dot wicket, wicket, four runs and another wicket. And that was it. That literally, broke the back of the Sri Lankan batters. And that was the end of that."

After the Asia Cup, where Siraj ended as India's highest wicket-taker (10) and second overall, the speedster has shifted focus on the India-Australia home ODIs. The three-match series opener kicks off in Mohali on Friday evening (September 22). The pacer will be desperate to carry on with the momentum as this is India's last series before the CWC 2023 edition on home soil.

Siraj runs riot

In a contest that lasted for little over three hours, Siraj was seen in sublime form as he wreaked havoc with four wickets in the fourth over of the Sri Lanka innings. Sri Lanka who initially decided to bat first had only two batters with double-digit scores while five players were dismissed for a duck. The entire team was bowled out for 50 as they recorded their lowest total in the Asia Cup.

Siraj would end with figures of 13/6 as he recorded the third-best bowling figures for India after Stuart Binny (4/6) and Anil Kumble (12/6). His exploits were coupled with Hardik Pandya’s three wickets as he too joined the party for team India.

With Sri Lanka recording their lowest total in the continental tournament, India needed just 6.1 overs to win the contest and clinched their record Asia Cup title. Shubman Gill scored 27 off 19 while surprise opener Ishan Kishan scored 23 runs as India recorded a 10-wicket win.

ACC announces $50,000 reward for groundstaff in Sri Lanka for tireless efforts in Asia Cup 2023

Washington Sundar, the young spin prodigy, will join the Indian Team in Colombo as the cover for injured Axar Patel ahead of the Asia Cup final on Sunday. Sundar, attending the Asian Games camp in Bengaluru, is being flown to Sri Lanka on Saturday after Axar got ruled out with niggles he suffered during the Bangladesh game.

Axar, who got two back-to-back games against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in this Asia Cup, was among the runs during the chase against the Tigers, hitting 42 off 34 balls. Though he brought his A-game while chasing, he failed to get the job done for India as they lost the tight encounter by six runs.

Even during the innings, Axar struggled with the niggles and wrist pain, with team physio hopping onto the field to put tapping on his thigh. Though he struck two sixes and three fours, Axar found it tougher to middle the ball on most occasions because of the discomfort. The extent of his injury remains unknown as of now.

Meanwhile, following the Asia Cup 2023 final on Sunday, Sundar will rejoin the Asian Games camp in Bengaluru before flying to Hangzhou, China, for the cricket competition, which gets underway on October 1.

The right-arm off-spinner has played some handy roles in his brief career, with the famous Gabba outing against Australia a couple of years ago being the top highlight. Sundar last featured for India in an ODI against New Zealand in January early this year but failed to make the cut in the provisional squad for the World Cup 2023.

Although India will play its first-choice XI against Sri Lanka in the all-important final, with Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur playing as all-rounders, call on Washington Sundar’s selection will fall to the pitch on offer, given the Colombo track has assisted spinners throughout.

Sri Lanka to miss star player in final

Maheesh Theekshana, Sri Lanka’s premier spinner, will remain unavailable for selection for the big game against India in the Asia Cup final on Sunday. Theekshana, who injured his right hamstring during the Pakistan tie in the Super Four stage, is ruled out of the final as scans confirmed a muscle injury.

The Sri Lankan selectors have named Sahan Arachchige as his replacement, while Theekshana will return to the High-Performance Center to commence rehabilitation work.

Asia Cup: Washington Sundar joins Indian Team in Colombo as cover for injured Axar Patel ahead of final

Pakistan lost to Sri Lanka in both the sides' last Super Four clash of Asia Cup 2023, on Thursday (September 14), which was a virtual semi-final showdown in a bid to join India in the tournament final on Sunday (September 17). Locking horns at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Babar Azam-led Men in Green opted to bat first in a rain-marred contest -- which was reduced to 42 overs a side -- and posted a healthy 252 for 7 riding on Md Rizwan's 86*, Abdullah Shafique's 52 and Iftikhar Ahmed's 47.

Chasing 252 (due to the DLS method), Sri Lanka held their innings beautifully courtesy of Kusal Mendis' 91 and Sadeera Samarawickrama's 47 and were well-placed at 210 for 4 in 35 overs before a collapse saw them needing eight off the last six. Eventually, Charith Asalanka's 49 not-out helped the Islanders edge past the Men in Green to set up a final clash versus Rohit Sharma's Team India.

Asia Cup: KL Rahul is giving India stability in the middle-order, says veteran spinner R Ashwin

On Tuesday (September 12), India beat Sri Lanka by 41 runs in a crucial Super Four clash, in Colombo, to book a spot in the Asia Cup 2023 final. Batting first, India were 80 for no loss before the Sri Lankan spin duo of Dunith Wellalage (5 for 40) and Charith Asalanka (4 for 18) reduced them to 186 for 9. Eventually, Axar Patel's 26 led India to 213 all-out in 49.1 overs after Rohit Sharma's 53 and KL Rahul's sublime 39. In reply, Sri Lanka folded for 172 in 41.3 overs with Kuldeep Yadav starring with the ball (4 for 43).

Throughout the contest, India were tested. While their batters were clueless versus the SL spinners, they somehow managed to go past the 200-run mark. While defending 213, Indian bowlers started on a positive note with Jasprit Bumrah striking twice whereas Md Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja also added to SL's woes. The Lankans were 25 for 3 and further reduced to 99 for 6 but a timely 63-run seventh-wicket stand between Dhananjaya de Silva and Wellalage (42*) took the home side to 162 for 6. Nonetheless, India kept fighting hard and eventually rode on Kuldeep's four-fer to dismiss the opposition for 172 in 41.3 overs.

'Are you out of your mind?'

'Are you out of your mind?' After the game, Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar lauded Team India and rubbished claims of India purposely trying to lose to the Lankans, which would have eliminated Pakistan. Shoaib Akhtar lauds India after SL win propels them to Asia Cup final, slams FIXING claims against Rohit & Co.

Kuldeep Yadav starred with the ball for Team India in their successful defence of 213 versus Sri Lanka in the crucial Super Four clash in Asia Cup 2023 on Tuesday (September 12) in Colombo.
After the match, the 28-year-old Kuldeep credited Suryakumar Yadav's pep talk for his splendid spell on a tricky surface. "You gave a pep talk before the game and asked me not to lose grip in this game. Asia Cup: Kuldeep Yadav credits Suryakumar Yadav for his 'pep talk' after India beat SL in Super Four clash

Team India went past Sri Lanka by 41 runs in their Super Four face-off in the Asia Cup 2023 edition on Tuesday (September 12) in Colombo. Batting first, India managed a below-par 213 in 49.1 overs with Rohit Sharma (53) and KL Rahul (39) being the top run-scorers. For Sri Lanka, their spin duo -- Dunith Wellalage and Charith Asalanka -- led the charge and shared nine wickets, with Wellalage returning with 5 for 40, but the home side's batting line-up didn't perform well and the team was bundled out for just 172 in 41.3 overs.

With the win, India have qualified for the Asia Cup final, which will take place on Sunday (September 17) in Colombo. For them, there were a lot of positives in the SL game. They were tested with the bat before their bowlers -- led by Kuldeep Yadav (4 for 43) -- took them to an impressive victory at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After the clash, Indian captain Rohit Sharma lauded Kuldeep for his consistent run in the recent years.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma lauds Kuldeep Yadav after SL win sends India to Asia Cup final

On Tuesday (September 12), Rohit Sharma-led India beat Sri Lanka by 41 runs in a hard-fought low-scoring Super Four contest at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, to book a spot in the Asia Cup 2023 final. Batting first, India rode on Rohit Sharma's 53, KL Rahul's 39 and Axar Patel's vital 26 to post a below-par 213 in 49.1 overs as Sri Lankan spin duo -- Dunith Wellalage and Charith Asalanka -- wreaked havoc with regular strikes. In reply, Indian bowlers combined to put up a spirited show to dismiss the Lankans for 172 in 41.3 overs.

Throughout the game, India were tested to the core. Their batters struggled versus the SL spinners on a tricky surface -- with a lot of spin and lateral movement on offer -- before they came out all guns blazing with the ball. Despite reducing the Islanders to 25 for 3, India had to overcome some tricky periods with the Lankans -- led by Dhananjaya de Silva (41) and Wellalge (42*) -- striving hard to stay alive in the contest. From 99 for 6, the hosts revamped at 162 for 6, courtesy of Dhananjaya-Wellalge's 63-run seventh-wicket stand, and it was their game to lose before the partnership was broken to end Sri Lanka's resistance.

After India's impressive win, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir lauded the overall team effort. He feels it was a more 'convincing' win for the Men in Blue than the one they achieved over Pakistan, where India won by 228 runs on Monday (September 11) in Colombo.

Gambhir further added, "Defending 217 against Sri Lanka, they are a really good side playing against spin. This would give them a lot of confidence going into the final and then the World Cup. because the moment your Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav start firing, I think it gives a lot of confidence to the captain."

With the ball, Jasprit Bumrah (2 for 30) and Md Siraj (1 for 17) started really well before Ravindra Jadeja (2 for 33) and Kuldeep Yadav (4 for 43) led India to a hard-fought win to take the national side to the summit clash.
