India took less than a session on Day 4 to wrap up proceedings and thrash New Zealand by 372 runs in the second and final Test at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Monday morning (December 6). Setting up a daunting 540-run target, India had claimed five Kiwi wickets and bundled them out for a paltry 167 early this morning to win the series 1-0.

It was a dominating performance from Team India, who were in a spot of bother at 80 for 3 in the first innings but recovered in style and hammered the Black Caps as India won their first-ever Test series in the Rahul Dravid-era.

Opting to bat first, India rode on Mayank Agarwal's 150 to post 325 all-out in the first essay. Ajaz Patel became the third bowler to claim ten wickets in an innings in the purest format but NZ fell like nine pins against India's spin trio -- Jayant Yadav, R Ashwin and Axar Patel -- to be bundled out for 62 in their first innings. In reply, India declared at 276/7 courtesy vital knocks from Mayank, Axar, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara. In reply, the NZ batting line-up's struggles continued as they failed to pose any fight.

After the end of the two Tests between India and current Test champions NZ, here's the updated points table of the ongoing second cycle of the WTC:

INDvsNZ: 'I personally wanted to try Mayank Agarwal's template,' says Daryl Mitchell during Mumbai Test

Former Pakistani cricketer Salman Butt has commented on Indian skipper Virat Kohli's controversial wicket during India's first innings of the Mumbai Test against New Zealand, which grabbed headlines as some critics called it unfair.

On Day 1 at the Wankhede Stadium, Kohli lost his wicket to NZ spinner Ajaz Patel, who took all 10 wickets and scripted history. Kohli's dismissal has left the cricket world divided.

Virat asked for a review for the leg before dismissal and the third umpire upheld the call of on-field umpire Anil Chaudhary. After watching the clip multiple times from different angles, TV umpire Virender Sharma signalled out.

The videos, however, suggested that the ball could have hit the bat first. During the match, he was heard saying, "Ball and bat and pad appears to be together. I don't have any conclusive evidence to overturn that."

Commenting on the same, Butt on his YouTube channel said, "A few decisions in this game have been this way (not upto the mark), especially Kohli's. The umpires looked nervous. At one point while checking Kohli's dismissal, they even forgot to check the ball-tracker to see if the ball is hitting the stumps."

'Umpires were nervous': Former Pakistani cricketer on Virat Kohli's controversial wicket during Mumbai Test

New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel etched his name into history when he became only the third bowler ever to bag all ten wickets in an innings of a Test match. Patel achieved the historic feat on Day 2 of the ongoing second Test against India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. Patel joined an elite list featuring the legendary Anil Kumble and Jim Laker.

It was a magical spell from Patel, who picked up four wickets on Day 1 of the Mumbai Test before following it up with the remaining six wickets during India's first innings on Day 2. Kumble was the last bowler to pick up all ten wickets in an innings of a Test match when he achieved the feat in the Delhi Test against Pakistan in 1999.

History-maker Patel was lauded by the cricket fraternity on social media as players, fans and experts lauded his brilliant effort against India. India head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Virat Kohli also came up with a special gesture as they visited the New Zealand dug-out to congratulate Patel after his ten-wicket haul.

The gesture from the Indian captain and head coach won hearts on social media as they were lauded by many. The video of Kohli and Dravid visiting New Zealand's dug-out to congratulate Patel went viral on social media.

After Ajaz's terrific spell, New Zealand were expected to tighten their grip on the game but their batting line-up fell like a pack of cards in their first innings. R Ashwin and Mohammed Siraj ripped through the Kiwi batting line-up to pick up seven wickets between them and bundle out the visitors for a paltry 62 runs and hand India a massive lead of 263 runs.

New Zealand recorded the lowest ever total by any team in a Test match against India and will have to pull off the impossible to stand a chance in the Test match as India have amassed a lead of over 400 runs already and are inching towards a big win.

Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh weighed in on the performance of Ajinkya Rahane, who is going through a lean patch in his career. The former spin legend has also named a replacement of Test vice-captain, claiming it to be the "perfect solution" for Team India.

The 33-year-old has been facing criticism for his recent performances as he has hit just one century and a couple of fifties in the last 16 Tests. His average has also declined.

If we talk about his performance in 2020, he scored 272 runs in four matches he played and in 2021, he scored 407 runs from 12 Tests he has played. In India vs New Zealand Test in Kapur, his performance was criticised as he scored 35 in the first innings and four runs in the second.

Harbhajan Singh names replacement for Ajinkya Rahane: He could be India's 'perfect solution'

India's middle-order worries going into South Africa series remained but that didn't deter Ravichandran Ashwin from turning the heat on as his three quick blows left New Zealand tottering at 140 for five in pursuit of an impossible 540 on day three of the second Test.

While Daryl Mitchell (60 off 92 balls) and Henry Nicholls (36 batting) added 73 runs for the fourth wicket, there is no denying that India in all likelihood will finish it early on the fourth day with Ashwin (3/27) looking menacing after every passing over.

What will hurt New Zealand team most in this defeat is the fact that this is the game where one of its own -- Ajaz Patel, equalled the world record and grabbed a match-haul of 14 wickets, something that no one has ever done against India in Test cricket.

The tall Mitchell at least tried to use his reach to counter Ashwin and also attack Jayant Yadav and Axar Patel but looked more like the last man standing, trying to delay the inevitable before a rush of blood saw him being holed at deep extra cover. Tom Blundell had a suicidal runout going for a non-existent single.

But it was Ashwin, who again got the new ball and immediately got into the act by removing skipper Tom Latham with an angular delivery while Will Young gave bat pad to forward short leg and Ross Tayor, who has been a walking wicket, failed miserably in his attempt to slog sweep the wily off-spinner.

There was one over where Ashwin literally toyed with left-handed Nicholls who couldn't gauge which one would turn away like a classical off-break and the one that will straighten or come in with the angle.

But there will be some issues that would need coach Rahul Dravid's urgent attention.

For India, even in what could be a facile victory, the wobbly middle-order would keep them worried going into the South Africa series.

Ajinkya Rahane failed in the first Test and had to be dropped on pretext of a hamstring niggle. Cheteshwar Pujara had three bad innings and one where he looked better but that was after the pressure was released by the bowlers.

Skipper Virat Kohli, whose primary aim of not enforcing follow-on was to get some batting time under his belt, also didn't look confident during a scratchy innings of 36 off 84 balls.

India declared their second innings at 276 for 7 after Axar hit four sixes and three fours in his 41 off 26 balls to prop up the innings towards the end.

Their confidence already shattered, the New Zealand bowlers conceded as many as 25 fours and 11 sixes in the 70 overs they bowled in the second innings. In fact, all Indian batters save Wriddhiman Saha hit at least one six.

Kohli's idea of batting again was partially successful because Pujara did look good during his 47 and Mayank Agarwal (62, 108 balls) did his cause no harm by smashing another half-century to top up his first innings score of 150.

The duo added 107 runs for the opening stand to add insult to New Zealand's injuries and it was compounded by another 82 runs that Shubman Gill (47) added with Kohli.

Save a six that he hit off opposition's weakest link, Will Sommerville, Kohli for the better part of his 84 balls didn't look convincing before playing on to a friendly left-arm spin from Rachin Ravindra, who also had three wickets.

Agarwal was looking good for his second hundred of the game but in his bid to hit another six off Patel he could not reach to the pitch of the delivery and Will Young comfortably took the catch at long-off.

For Pujara this was the best chance to get a fifty and increase his confidence before the tour of South Africa.

He survived a strong DRS appeal but then one delivery that was pitched slightly fuller and turned, got his outside edge and went to Taylor's safe hands in the slips.

New Zealand bundled out for 62: A look at lowest totals by Kiwis against India in Test cricket

New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel has been on a record-breaking spree in the ongoing second Test against India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After picking up a magnificent ten-wicket haul during India's first innings of the Test match, Patel continued his bowling heroics during the hosts' second innings on Day 3. He followed up his perfect ten with four wickets in the second innings to break England legend Ian Botham's 41-year-old record.

Patel, who single-handedly bundled out India in their first innings, finished with figures of 14/225 after his four wickets in the second innings. He now holds the record for best-ever bowling figures by any bowler in a Test match against India, bettering Botham's 13/106 against India in 1980. Incidentally, Botham had also achieved the feat at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to power England to a ten-wicket win.

After dismissing all ten Indian batters in their first innings, Patel picked up the wickets of Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Shreyas Iyer and Jayant Yadav in the second innings. He might have gone on to pick a few more wickets had India not declared their second innings on 276/7 on Day 3.

Patel also surpassed New Zealand great Daniel Vettori to take the second spot on the list of Kiwi bowlers with best match figures in Tests. Vettori was second with his match figures of 12/149 against Australia in the year 2000 but Patel has not pushed him to the third spot and is only behind legend Richard Hadlee, who had taken 15/123 against Australia in 1985.

Ajaz Patel breaks Ian Botham's 41-year-old record with his magical spell against India in Mumbai Test

Indian skipper Virat Kohli was once again dismissed by a spinner in the second innings of the ongoing second Test between India and New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Kohli was bowled by spinner Ravindra during India's second innings on Day 3 of the Test match on Sunday (December 05).

The dismissal took place in the 63rd over when Kohli was batting on 36 and inching close towards his half-century. On the very first ball of the over, the left-arm spinner dismissed the Indian skipper. It was bowled short by Ravindra and the ball further drifted away from Kohli, who went for the cut but was beaten as the ball took an inside edge of his bat and ended up crashing into the stumps.

Kohli was left in disbelief as he stood stunned in the middle with a cheeky grin on his face. The Indian captain's reaction to his dismissal soon went viral on social media.

In India's first innings of the Mumbai Test, Kohli, who was making his comeback after missing the series-opener, was dismissed on a duck by left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel. Patel went on to script history as he ended up claiming all ten wickets in India's innings and became only the third bowler in the history of Test cricket to achieve the massive feat.

Virat Kohli in disbelief after getting bowled by Rachin Ravindra in 2nd Test against New Zealand - WATCH

Virat Kohli & Co. are in a commanding position after Day 2 of the second and final Test match against New Zealand, which is underway at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, thanks to Mayank Agarwal's brilliant century in the first innings and a disciplined bowling attack.

For New Zealand, their spinner Ajaz Patel took a record 10 wickets in an innings but the batters failed to continue the momentum as the batting order collapsed against the Indian bowling unit and bundled out for 62.

The Kiwis were bowled out for a lowest-ever Test score against India by any side. Also, note that the previous lowest Test score in India was the home side's 75 against the West Indies in Delhi in 1987.

At stumps of Day 2, India were 332 ahead after not enforcing the follow-on and reaching 69 for 0 in their second innings. But several critics have raised the question that why Virat didn't enforce the follow-on.

Explaining that, former cricketer Dinesh Karthik told Simon Doull during an interaction on Cricbuzz: "I get the feeling that you've got to understand that there's obviously a tour of South Africa to follow. If you just this Test match, you won't get extra points if you win in three or four days. I just feel that the more you bat, the worse wicket is going to get. So, it will be easier for them (India) to roll over New Zealand in the second innings."

"Now they have an opportunity to bat, they are way ahead in the game, and have more than enough runs. But they are just trying to rub it in and make sure that all bases are covered. I am sure that they'd love to see (Cheteshwar) Pujara get some runs, Virat Kohli if he gets an opportunity to bat and score some runs, he added.

India vs New Zealand: Why Virat Kohli didn't enforce follow-on during Mumbai Test? Dinesh Karthik has answers

Despite Ajaz Patel's historic ten-wicket haul on Day 2 of the ongoing second Test between India and New Zealand in Mumbai, the hosts dominated the proceedings. India posted a strong total of 325 runs on the board in their first innings before bundling out the Kiwis for a paltry 62 to gain control in the game.

It was an exceptional effort from the Indian bowling attack as R Ashwin and Mohammed Siraj combined to rip through New Zealand batting line-up picking up seven wickets between them. While Siraj ran through the top-order, Ashwin wreaked havoc on New Zealand's lower-middle order.

Siraj bowled a sensational spell for India to get the hosts off to a great start. He drew the first blood by removing opener Will Young before dismissing Tom Latham in quick succession. He then followed it up with the wicket of Ross Taylor to finish with excellent figures of 3/19 in his four overs.

It was a stellar display of fast bowling from Siraj as well as shrewd captaincy from Virat Kohli, who used the pacer well and plotted Latham's dismissal with a short ball. Former India cricketer and popular commentator Aakash Chopra heaped praise on Siraj for his brilliant spell and also credited Kohli for his captaincy.

Chopra said the way Siraj set up Latham was the reason why he had missed Kohli in the first Test against New Zealand where Ajinkya Rahane had led the side in the regular skipper's absence.

"That is where I missed Virat Kohli, the captain. Mohammed Siraj set Tom Latham up brilliantly, and it’s not only the wicket of the bowler. Kohli played a role in it,” said Chopra on Star Sports.

"In the last Test, we didn’t see a single bouncer against Tom Latham. With Siraj, you can expect short-pitched bowls more often than not. So he bowled short and they had the leg-side trap ready for Latham. It was a good wicket and wonderful captaincy," he added.

Kohli had missed the series-opener against New Zealand due to workload management as he was rested after India's T20 World Cup 2021 campaign. Kohli had also missed the three-match T20I series against the Black Caps.

During the match, the star pacer's stunning spell helped India to bowl out Kiwis at 62 in their first innings at the Wankhede Stadium. INDvsNZ, 2nd Test: Aakash Chopra praises Indian pacer says, 'He did not allow us to miss anyone'

Team India opener Mayank Agarwal continued his purple patch with the willow in India's second innings of the ongoing second Test against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday. Agarwal, who had slammed a magnificent century in the first innings, followed it up with a brilliant fifty in the second innings. However, he missed out on a chance to notch up twin hundreds in the Test match as he fell for 62 in the second innings.

Agarwal was on the verge of becoming the only seventh Indian batter to score a century in both innings of a Test match. He looked in sublime touch and played with great control during the second innings against the Kiwis but was dismissed on 62 by Ajaz Patel in the 32nd over. Nonetheless, he managed to enter an elite list featuring the legendary Sunil Gavaskar.

Agarwal joined the elite list of Indian batters to have scored back-to-back fifty-plus scores as an opener in a Test match at the Wankhede Stadium. He emulated the likes of Gavaskar (205, 73 in 1978), Chetan Chauhan (52, 84 in 1978) and Kris Srikkanth (71, 65 in 1987). His half-century helped India take their lead past the 400-run mark in the Mumbai Test.

With the help of Mayank's 150-run knock, India had posted a strong total of 325 runs on the board in their first innings despite a brilliant spell from spinner Ajaz Patel, who picked up a historic ten-wicket haul, becoming only the third bowler in Test history to take all ten wickets in an innings of a Test match.

However, New Zealand failed to capitalise as they were bundled out for a paltry 62 in their first innings and ended up conceding a massive lead of 263 runs to the hosts. India have now extended their lead to over 470 runs in their second innings as they look to secure a big win in the second Test.

Indian spinner R Ashwin had a brain fade moment in the middle of the pitch while batting during India's first innings on Day 2 of the ongoing second Test against New Zealand on Saturday. Ashwin ended up going for a review after being bowled as many were left baffled by the spinner's decision. The incident happened on the penultimate delivery pf the second over on Day 2 of the Mumbai Test.

Spinner Ajaz Patel, who has been bowling brilliantly, had picked up the wicket of Wriddhiman Saha on the previous delivery and cleaned up Ashwin on the next ball. It was a slower one from Patel which drifted inside and beat Ashwin's defence to crash into the stumps.

However, Ashwin probably thought the New Zealand players were celebrating a stump out decision and ended up signalling for DRS to everyone's surprise. Ashwin's brain-fade moment soon became a talking point on Twitter with many trolling the Indian spinner for his decision to go for the DRS while ignoring that he had been bowled.

In another tweet, Hogg slandered the Indian spinner for wasting a review for Team India in the Test match and stated that a batter should consult his partner at the non-striker's end before opting for a review. "Surely India lose a review with Ashwin reviewing being bowled. If your unsure of why your out you consult your partner not be given a hint by the umpire," said Hogg. 'He has not recovered completely': BCCI reveals why Shubman Gill didn't take field on Day 2 of Mumbai Test

Mumbai-born New Zealand left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel had an unforgettable afternoon when he entered the annals of Test cricket history with a 10-wicket haul but Indian bowlers made it a forgettable evening for him as well as his team by dismissing the visitors for a paltry 62, taking a massive stride towards a series victory.

By the end of the day, India were 69 for no loss in their second innings with Virat Kohli deciding against enforcing the follow-on in second and final Test.

Cheteshwar Pujara, coming out to open in place of an injured Shubman Gill, looked good during his 29 not out while Mayank Agarwal, after his fine 150 in India's first innings total of 325, remained unbeaten on 38.

The lead swelled to 332 for the hosts and in these conditions, the Indians will brace up for a three-day finish to earn some rest before boarding the charter flight to Johannesburg on December 16.

The second day of the second Test should have solely belonged to the 34-year-old Patel, who had figures of 42.5-12-119-10, to join the 'Elite List', where he has late Jim Laker and Indian great Anil Kumble for company.

By keeping India's first innings total down to a manageable level, Patel must have had a sense of elation but before the plethora of congratulatory messages on social media would stop coming, his batters just flattered to deceive as they managed to bat out only 28.1 overs.

The team ended up scoring the lowest total by an overseas side on Indian soil.

The Black Caps batted 14.4 overs less than what their premier spinner took to get all the Indian players out.

They didn't even let the feat sink in before Mohammed Siraj's (3/19) hostile four over spell literally decimated them. There were two deliveries that straightened and had enough pace to beat the batter's defence while the other was a mean bouncer.

Ravichandran Ashwin (4/8 in 8 overs) and Axar Patel (2/14 in 9.1 overs) were expectedly just too good on this track. The opposition batters simply couldn't counter the turn and bounce.

The New Zealand innings finished even before the Indian bowlers were nicely warmed up and it was understandable that Kohli wanted some batting time against a battered opposition which would give him and Puara requisite confidence.

With the match all but in their pocket, Pujara stroked freely and also got a pulled six off Patel -- a rarity from an exponent of defensive batting.

While Pujara will certainly value these welcome runs but it can't be seen in isolation that it came when the pressure was already completely released due to a mammoth 263-run first innings lead.

Patel started the day with two quick wickets before Agarwal and Axar added 67 runs for the seventh wicket to take the score towards the 300-run mark. Axar got his first 50 and batted with a lot of caution and occasional aggression.

The best delivery of the six wickets that he got on the day, was the one that got Ravichandran Ashwin out as he drew the batter forward and turned enough to clip the bails.

Ashwin hilariously appealed for DRS without realising that he has been bowled as he thought that the bowler had appealed for caught behind.

The review was wasted as he had already asked for it and once he realised that he was beaten lock, stock and barrel, he didn't wait for the final verdict.

No wonder when Patel got Siraj as his 10th and final victim, Ashwin was seen giving him a standing ovation from the Indian dressing room.

But little would Patel have known that it would turn into an anti-climax after Siraj's opening burst which was as good as one saw in home Test matches where pitches aren't conducive for pace bowling. However, this one had extra bounce.

The delivery that got Ross Taylor out was perhaps the best of the match.

The ball came in as Taylor shaped to play a defensive shot only to find enough deviation which beat the outside edge of his bat and knock back the off-stump.

That was one of a kind dismissal after which there was no chance of a recovery for the New Zealanders, who will now only look to delay the inevitable.

IND v NZ, Mumbai Test Day 2: Ajaz takes 'Perfect 10' but India bowl out NZ for 62 to inch towards big win

Indian bowlers ran riot in the first innings against New Zealand in the ongoing second Test between the two sides at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. India bundled out the Kiwis for a paltry 62 after posting 325 runs on the board in their first innings as R Ashwin and Mohammed Siraj combined to run through the New Zealand batting line-up.

Ajaz Patel stole the show during India's first innings as he picked up a historic ten-wicket haul and became the only third bowler in the world after the legendary Anil Kumble and Jim Laker to pick up all ten wickets in a Test innings. However, despite his heroics, India managed to post a strong total of 325 runs on the board with the help of Mayank Agarwal's brilliant knock of 150 runs.

Ajaz's efforts went in vain as the New Zealand batting line-up failed to capitalise in their first innings and fell like a pack of cards at the Wankhede Stadium. Ashwin picked up a four-wicket haul while Siraj took three wickets to skittle out the Kiwis for 62 and hand India a massive lead of 263 runs in the game.

Number eight Kyle Jamieson top-scored for New Zealand with 17 runs while opener Tom Latham was the nest best batter for the Kiwis with 10 runs. New Zealand recorded the lowest Test total by any team against India in the history of the game. It was also the lowest Test total by any team in a Test match in India.

Ajaz Patel's 10-wicket haul in vain as New Zealand get bundled out for 62, record lowest Test total vs India

New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel created history on Saturday (December 04) as he picked up all ten wickets during India's first innings of the ongoing second Test between the two sides at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Patel became the third bowler after the legendary Anil Kumble and Jim Laker to take all ten wickets in a Test innings.

On Day 2 of the second Test between India and New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Patel became the first bowler to claim all ten wickets in a Test innings away from home after dismissing Indian tail-ender Umesh Yadav. Despite Patel's ten-wicket haul, India managed to post a strong total on the board with the help of a brilliant knock from Mayank Agarwal, who scored 150 runs off 311 delieveries laced with 17 fours and four sixes. Agarwal's 150 along with crucial contributions from the likes of Axar Patel (52) and Shubman Gill (44) helped India post 325 runs on the board in their first innings.

Indian bowlers then dominated the proceedings during New Zealand's first innings and were quick to reduce the visitors to 51/6 inside 18 overs to further tighten their grip on the series-opener.

Agarwal's 150 along with crucial contributions from the likes of Axar Patel (52) and Shubman Gill (44) helped India post 325 runs on the board in their first innings. Indian batter Shubman Gill opened up about missed opportunity of hitting a big score during the first innings of the second Test against New Zealand on Friday (December 3) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Gill scored 44 runs off 71 balls after hosts elected to bat first on a weather-hit day when only 70 overs were possible.

After the end of the day, Gill, said, "I was batting well and it was an opportunity for me to go big but unfortunately I missed out on this. There wasn't much in it for the pacers but there was something for the spinners. The odd ball was turning and gripping initially but as the match went on, the wicket settled a bit."

He added, "It's important to play the line of the ball, if it's spinning you don't go with the spin, it's important to play the line. If it spins too much, you just hope that it doesn't take your outside edge and you try not to get lbw especially against to left-arm spinners."

INDvsNZ, 2nd Test: Shubman Gill rues missed opportunity of scoring big, says but 'unfortunately, I missed out'

New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel has scripted history by becoming the third bowler in the world to pick up all ten wickets in a Test innings. Patel achieved the historic feat in India's first innings of the ongoing second Test between the hosts and the Kiwis at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Patel accounted for all ten wickets in India's innings to join the likes of England's Jim Laker and India's Anil Kumble, who are the only other two bowlers to have taken all ten wickets in a Test innings.

Patel had drawn the first blood for New Zealand after a delayed start on Day 1 of the Mumbai Test when he dismissed Indian opener Shubman Gill on 44. The left-arm spinner then sent back Cheteshwar Pujara (0) and Virat Kohli (0) in quick succession while ensuring the duo failed to even open their account in the game. He then got rid of Shreyas Iyer on 18 as India posted 221/4 at stumps on Day 1.

Patel continued his magical spell on Day 2 of the Mumbai Test on Saturday and ran through the Indian batting line-up, picking up the remaining six wickets. He accounted for the dismissals of Mayank Agarwal, Wriddhiman Saha, R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Jayant Yadav and Mohammed Siraj to complete a historic ten-wicket haul and etch his name in history.

India legend Kumble was the last bowler to pick up all ten wickets in a Test innings. He had achieved the feat during a Test match against Pakistan in Delhi in 1999. Patel bowled 47.5 overs and conceded 119 runs to pick up all ten wickets in India's first innings.

Ajaz Patel outshines Mayank Agarwal

While Patel single-handedly picked up all ten wickets against India, Mayank Agarwal played a brilliant knock to help the hosts post a strong total of 325 runs on the board in their first innings. Mayank notched up 150 runs laced with 17 fours and 4 sixes and combined with the likes of Gill (44), Iyer (18) and Saha (27) to post crucial stands for Team India.

With the help of his heroic knock, the hosts managed to resist the pressure despite losing wickets in quick succession on Day 1. However, Mayank's efforts were outshone by Patel's historic ten-wicket haul. New Zealand would now be hoping to overhaul India's total of 325 runs in their first innings.

Virat Kohli-led Team India have locked horns with New Zealand in the second and final Test at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. While Kohli has returned back to action after the T20 World Cup, the home side are without the likes of vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja and speedster Ishant Sharma for the series finale.

No Rahane, Jadeja and Ishant Sharma: Here's why Team India are without famed trio in 2nd Test vs NZ

Virat Kohli returned to international cricket after India's T20 World Cup campaign on Friday morning (December 3). The 33-year-old was out of action from the India-New Zealand T20Is and Test series opener, however, took charge of the side for the second and final Test at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

After winning the toss, Kohli came out to bat with India losing two quick wickets after an 80-run opening stand between Mayank Agarwal and Shubman Gill. As No. 3 batter Cheteshwar Pujara departed for a duck, the onus fell on Kohli and Mayank. Nonetheless, the superstar batsman's return to the 22-yard cricket strip turned out to be a nightmare as he fell for a 4-ball duck, his 10th as Indian captain, as he fell to spinner Ajaz Patel.

The dismissal was controversial as it went upstairs and the third umpire took a lot of time before giving the Indian skipper out. While it looked like there was a clear edge, Kohli was given out due to 'lack of evidence' that the ball hit the bat first. Hence, he was given out lbw.

Many believe Kohli was wrongly given out as the ball hit the bat first and then the pad, ruling out the lbw scenario. Now, former NZ spinner-cum-captain Daniel Vettori opined on his dismissal. "It was fairly obvious that he nicked it. For me, it seems obvious that there was an inside edge although it was close. But for one man to sit there and a make a crucial decision, maybe the match referee could have stepped in,” Vettori said in a conversation with ESPNcricinfo.

On the other hand, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer stated, "I can understand the on-field umpire making a decision. That can happen. But the third umpire making so many mistakes after seeing so many replays is disappointing. And Virender Sharma did have a very poor first Test and that form continues for him as well."

He also took to his official Twitter account and wrote, "That was bat first in my opinion. And I understand the ‘conclusive evidence’ part. But I think this was an instance where common sense should have prevailed. But as they say, common sense is not so common. Feel for Virat Kohli. #Unlucky #INDvNZ."

'Fairly obvious there was an edge' - Former NZ captain on Virat Kohli's controversial dismissal in Mumbai Test

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has heaped praise on Mayank Agarwal after his brilliant century on the opening day of the ongoing second Test between India and New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Bangar said Agarwal is the most attacking Indian batter against spin since Virender Sehwag when it comes to the longest format of the game.

Agarwal looked in a great rhythm right from the start of India's first innings in the second Test on Friday as he notched up an unbeaten 120-run-knock to help the hosts post 221/4 at stumps. Agarwal combined with his opening partner Shubman Gill (44) to get India off to a great start with an 80-run stand for the first wicket before India lost three wickets in quick succession.

He then combined with Shreyas Iyer (18) to add another 60 runs for the fourth wicket and tackled Azaj Patel really well. The Kiwi spinner was on fire as he picked up all the four wickets that India lost on the first day of the series-opener. Bangar lauded the Indian opener for his terrific strokeplay against spin and called him one of the best Indian batters against spin in Tests since Sehwag.

"In my opinion, Mayank Agarwal is the most attacking batter against spin I have seen since Virender Sehwag for India in Test cricket. Everyone says that he steps out and plays the aerial shots well and targets the straighter boundaries," Bangar said on Star Sports.

"But there was one special thing seen in this knock and it was also because of the extra bounce, that he played so many shots off the back foot. He played very good pull shots when the ball was slightly back of length," he added.

Winning the toss, Kohli & Co. opted to bat first and were off to a great start. From 80 for no loss, India slipped to 80 for 2 with Shubman Gill (44) and Cheteshwar Pujara (0) returning back to the pavillion in no time.

Kohli, who returned to action for the first time since the T20 World Cup, walked out to bat with the team in crisis. Following his dismissal, the 33-year-old achieved two unwanted records under his belt.

With another duck in Tests, Kohli now is the only Indian captain to have failed to open his account on ten occasions. During the England tour early this year, the right-hander had leapfrogged his predecessor MS Dhoni (8) to have nine ducks as Indian captain in the purest format. With this, he is joint-second -- along with former South Africa skipper Graeme Smith -- in the overall list of most ducks by Test captains whereas NZ's Stephen Fleming leads the chart (13). Dhoni, Michael Artheron and Hansie Cronje are tied at the third position with 8 ducks each.

In addition, Kohli now has registered 6 ducks (the most) while playing at home as Indian captain. He shared the top spot with MK Pataudi prior to the Mumbai Test and now has gone onto take the numero uno position in the unwanted list.

Virat Kohli achieves two unwanted records after failing to open his account on Day 1 of Mumbai Test

Indian skipper Virat Kohli had a disappointing outing on his return to international cricket on Friday (December 03) as he was dismissed on a duck in the ongoing second Test against New Zealand. Kohli, who had skipped the T20I series and was also rested for the first Test against New Zealand, could not open his account on his return for the Indian team.

Kohli was dismissed on a duck after playing four deliveries in India's first innings of the second Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The dismissal took place in the 30th over when spinner Ajaz Patel trapped the Indian skipper LBW and went for a big shout. The on-field umpire declared Kohli out but the Indian captain was quick to go for a review.

Controversy erupted after the replays showed that the ball had clearly touched the bat and the pad at the same time. Due to no conclusive evidence, the on-field umpire's decision was upheld by the third umpire, who deemed Kohli out after the DRS. Kohli had a brief chat with the umpire before walking back as he looked upset over failing to open his dismissal.

However, Agarwal held one end strongly and scored runs consistently as he added another 80 runs for the second wicket with Shreyas Iyer (18). Agarwal notched up a brilliant century and will be looking to finish the day unbeaten as India aim to post a strong total on the board in their first innings.

For New Zealand, Azaj Patel has been the pick of the bowlers so far as he has claimed all four wickets in India's first innings on Day 1.

Virat Kohli upset as controversial DRS decision sends him packing on a duck in 2nd Test vs NZ - WATCH

Team India have locked horns with New Zealand in the second and final Test at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Friday (December 3). After the drawn Kanpur Test, both sides have all to play for with the series on the line. While regular captain Virat Kohli returned to the playing XI, after being rested for the series opener, the home side have gone into the final Test without the likes of vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja and Ishant Sharma.

The famed trio have not been dropped but got ruled out due to injury concerns. At the toss, the 33-year-old Kohli opined on Rahane, Ishant Sharma and Jadeja's absence and told, "We're batting first. Looks like a hard wicket and not a lot of grass. With the sun out, it should be the best time to bat. Rahane had a hammie niggle on Day 5, Jadeja has a swollen right forearm, and Ishant has an injury too. We just have to do the basics right like in Kanpur. NZ must be given credit for batting out the overs on Day 5. We can be in positions to capitalize at home if we play well."

As soon as the news broke out of Rahane, Jadeja and Ishant being injured, former Indian Test specialist-turned-NCA head VVS Laxman was left surprised with the development. He told on Byju's Cricket Live on Star Sports, "Did something happen this morning? But Virat Kohli said nothing about in the press conference yesterday. It is obviously a big blow."

Virat Kohli said nothing about it: Laxman surprised with Rahane, Jadeja and Ishant's injuries for 2nd Test

Team India won the toss and elected to bat first versus New Zealand in the second and final Test at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Friday (December 3). With this, India have the toss on all five occasions in the home series versus the Black Caps, including the three T20Is and Test series opener.

The home series versus New Zealand has been a unique one for India, with three different captains. While Rohit led the national side in T20Is after becoming the full-time captain in the shortest format, Rahane led the charge in the Test series opener with Kohli being rested. While Kohli returned, and Rahane missed the final Test due to injury, the 33-year-old maintained India's clean record in terms of winning the coin toss in the entire series versus the Kiwis.

For the unversed, Kohli doesn't have a great record when it comes to winning the toss. In 2021, the India batter has lost 17 tosses and won only 6 (including the Mumbai Test). While he has now won three tosses in a row, including India's last two games in the T20 World Cup, his record with the coin toss isn't one to cherish. Hence, former Indian opener-turned-meme-specialist Wasim Jaffer left netizens laughing out loud with a hilarious post:

For the unversed, even Kohli was pleasantly surprised after winning the toss. At the toss, he opined on Rahane, Ishant Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja's absence and told, "We're batting first.

ALSO READ | No Rahane, Jadeja and Ishant Sharma: Here's why Team India are without famed trio in 2nd Test vs NZ For the unversed, Kohli doesn't have a great record when it comes to winning the toss. In 2021, the India batter has lost 17 tosses and won only 6 (including the Mumbai Test). While he has now won three tosses in a row, including India's last two games in the T20 World Cup, his record with the coin toss isn't one to cherish. ROFL! Wasim Jaffer shares hilarious post as Virat Kohli manages to win the toss in final Test vs NZ

India and New Zealand faced each other in the two-match Test series opener at Green Park, Kanpur. The sporting track ensured that pacers, spinners as well as the batters had something to extract from the 22-yard cricket strip as the match lived upto expectations and resulted in a riveting draw.

Opting to bat first, Ajinkya Rahane-led Team India posted 345 all-out, riding on Shreyas Iyer's 105 and fifties from Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja. In reply, NZ made 296 whereas India set up a stiff 284-run target for the visitors, courtesy a vital 49-run first-innings lead. At stumps on Day 5, the Kiwis managed a draw thanks to their unbeaten last-wicket stand as they were reeling at 165/9 when both teams settled for a draw.

With all to play for in the second and final Test, at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, rain might make its presence felt and dent the proceedings in the series decider. The unseasonal rain in Mumbai has surprised one and all and the unfriendly weather conditions forced the two teams to cancel their practice sessions on Wednesday (December 1).

While Thursday is also expected to be on similar lines, there is some good news for cricket fans. The weather is expected to become a lot better as the match would progress. Here's the weather forecast for the city during the second Test:

Talking about Team India, they will be boosted by the presence of Virat Kohli, who was rested for the three T20Is and Test series opener. His inclusion will mean one among the batters will be dropped. As per reports, opener Mayank Agarwal might be shown the door even though the pressure is building up on out-of-form senior pros Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara.

For the Kiwis, they will head into the finale with a lot of confidence after having denied a victory to Team India in the Kanpur Test.
