Team India will lock horns with Kane Williamson-led New Zealand in the second and final Test at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on December 3 (Friday). After the riveting Kanpur Test, which ended in a draw, the two sides have all to play for with the series on the line.

While Williamson-led Black Caps will be confident after their spirited fight in the first Test, India will be boosted by regular captain Virat Kohli's return into the playing XI. However, his return will see one of the main batters warm the bench. Though vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane averages a mere 19.57 in 12 games this year, Cheteshwar Pujara has also not scored a ton since early 2019. The pressure is on both the senior pros but former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer feels Kohli is likely to make it to the XI at the expense of Mayank Agarwal.

Mayank, who has a high score of 243, returned with 13 and 17 in the Kanpur Test. Hence, his position is also under threat.

Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo, "The way Pujara batted in England, it was good to see that he was playing at a quicker pace. He is used to Indian conditions, he has to adopt a positive approach once he gets set onto the crease.

On Rahane, Jaffer insisted that he looked in good touch in the first essay of the Kanpur Test but needs to capitalise on his starts. "In the Kanpur Test, he would've lamented his shot in the first innings. He looked positive but he squandered the opportunity. But I want him to play with the same approach that he showed in the first innings," Jaffer added.

With no Mayank in his XI, Jaffer also named KS Bharat as an opener along with Shubman Gill. It will be interesting to see if Wriddhiman Saha gets dropped after his gutsy 61 not out in the second innings of the first Test. Moreover, he has been declared fit by Captain Kohli ahead of the series finale. In addition, his XI included Mohammed Siraj, replacing Ishant Sharma.

Mumbai Test: Wasim Jaffer predicts Kohli & Co.'s XI, drops India's double centurion for NZ series finale

After a thrilling Kanpur Test, Virat Kohli led-India will face Kane Williamson led-New Zealand in the second and final test match on Friday.

Virat Kohli, who missed the T20I series and first Test, will be back in action. The return of Kohli will certainly help India's middle-order which has been a point of concern.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane who haven't performed as expected will be looking to regain their form. Skipper Virat has confirmed that wicketkeeper Wriddhaman Saha has recovered from neck spasm and will be fit to play.

New Zealand, on the other hand, has also looked weak in the middle order and would definitely like to do better in the Mumbai Test. It'll be interesting to watch if New Zealand would be opting for the same bowling lineup as their spin unit isn't that experienced or threatening.

Virat Kohli-led Team India will lock horns with New Zealand in the second and final Test at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on December 3 (Friday). After the series opener ended in a riveting draw, all eyes are on the series finale. After being rested for the three T20Is and the two-match Test series opener, the 33-year-old Kohli will return back to action and lead India in the deciding Test.

Talking about the first Test, the Kohli-less Indian team couldn't take NZ's last wicket as the match ended in a draw. Opting to bat first, Ajinkya Rahane-led hosts posted 345 all-out. In reply, Kiwis made 296 all-out, giving the home side a handy 49-run lead. Chasing 284, NZ surrendered the momentum on Day 5 to be reduced from 79 for 1 to 155/9. At stumps, they, however, managed to ensure a draw as the last-wicket stand remained unbroken.

While India did a lot of things right and fought hard versus the inaugural WTC winners, Rahane & Co. couldn't manage to win. Hence, some section remained unimpressed and criticised the national side. Speaking at the traditional press conference ahead of the 2nd Test, on Thursday (December 3), skipper Kohli has now defended Rahane & Co.

"I watched the game and I think we tried everything we could as a team. Obviously, everyone has a different way of approaching things. I probably would have been able to answer that if I was in that situation but I was not so I know that the team tried everything that they could and Jinx has always brought up great ideas to make sure that, you know, we put the opposition under pressure with strategy, with field placings and rotating the bowlers as well. A great example of that was in Australia as well when we played [there]," Kohli reckoned.

He added, "Sometimes when you are not able to pull off a result you also have to give credit to the opposition for batting out 10-12 overs in the end with the last wicket. It was a very good effort from them. So we have to be realistic about the scenario, realistic about the situation. Obviously, you look to improve on things you still can and you find ways of winning and that’s been the essence of our team regardless of who’s been in charge."

India will now look to carry the momentum from the first Test, where they were denied a win by a whisker, and claim the two-match Test series versus the Black Caps. However, it won't be a cakewalk given how competitive Williamson & Co. have been in the longest format.

IND vs NZ, 2nd Test: Virat Kohli defends Ajinkya Rahane & Co. after hosts fail to go 1-0 up in Kanpur

The spread of the Omicron coronavirus (COVID-19) variant has cautioned the authorities globally as it is said to be the most worrying Covid variant since delta because of the large number of mutations. Several countries have already imposed travel bans on some of the southern African nations. Not just international travel, sport also has been impacted. Events in South Africa began to shut down last week due to Omicron as rugby teams and golfers scrambled to leave the country.

Amid the new variant scare, India's tour of South Africa for a three-Test series, followed by three one-day internationals (ODI) and four Twenty20 matches might get pushed back by a week. The Test series is scheduled to start on December 17 in Johannesburg. It is expected that the Indian cricketers will know the decision in the next few days whether the tour will go ahead or not.

It is important to note that India on Thursday (December 2) reported two cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. Both have been reported from India's southern state, Karnataka. Two males, one 66 and the other 46 have tested positive.

Weighing in on the situation, Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who is returning for the second Test against New Zealand starting Friday (December 3) in Mumbai, said his side were seeking clarity about the SA tour.

Ahead of the second Test against New Zealand, Virat said, "We have spoken to all the senior members of the squad. Obviously, Rahul bhai [head coach Rahul Dravid] has initiated a conversation within the group, which is very important to know."

He added, "At the end of the day we understand - our focus from the Test match will not shift regardless - but you want to have clarity and want to be in a situation where you know exactly what's going on. We've been talking to the board and we are pretty confident that within a day or two, or pretty soon we'll have absolute clarity as to what is going on."

Virat also urged to be "realistic" about things as he said, "We cannot just ignore the things that potentially could put you in a confusing place. And no one wants to be there. I'm sure everyone is working hard towards finding clarity and giving us the situation as it unfolds, as soon as possible."

Team India and New Zealand will lock horns with each other in the second and final Test at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on December 3 (Friday). After the series opener went down to the wire with both sides settling for a draw, the stage is set for a riveting second and final Test in Mumbai.

Talking about the series opener, the Ajinkya Rahane-led Team India won the toss and opted to bat first. Riding on Shreyas Iyer's 105 and fifties from Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill, India posted 345 all-out. In reply, NZ were all-out for 296. Courtesy a 49-run lead, India declared at 234-7, setting up a stiff 284-run target for the Black Caps.

Kane Williamson-led Kiwis managed to earn a draw, reeling at 165-9 at stumps on the final day. With all to play for in the series decider, the Mumbai Test is expected to go down the wire. While the unseasonal rains in the city have created some panic among cricket lovers, the weather is expected to be much better as the match progresses. Rahul Dravid-coached India will be boosted by Virat Kohli's presence. However, the biggest question is: who will make way for skipper Kohli?

As per reports, opener Mayank Agarwal might have to sit out. Mayank returned with scores of 13 and 17 in the Kanpur Test. While the pressure is also building up on senior pros Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara, given their poor run of form, they are likely to hold onto their spots for the series finale. The home side might also be tempted to replace Ishan Sharma with another pacer as he went wicketless in the series opener. In addition, Pujara or Wriddhiman Saha might be given the opening role for the finale.

Team India and New Zealand will lock horns with each other in the second and final Test at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Friday (December 3). The series opener lived upto expectations in the Green Park, Kanpur as the match went down to the wire where the Kane Williamson-led Kiwis denied a win to Ajinkya Rahane-led Team India, being 165/9 in pursuit of 284 on the last day.

The action will now take place in Mumbai, where the unseasonal rains have surprised one and all. Nonetheless, the weather is expected to get better as the game would progress ahead. Talking about Team India, they will be strengthened by the addition of regular captain Virat Kohli. Kohli was rested for the three T20Is and the Test series opener, hence, the 33-year-old will like return in style and lead his side to a series victory. His own form is a concern, thus, Kohli will be eager to break his century drought in the Mumbai Test.

Match prediction: The red soil at the Wankhede Stadium is expected to aid the spinners as the match would go on. Spin is sure to play a huge role in the second and final Test. Taking that into consideration, India will start as favourites due to their spin quality and low returns from NZ's middle and lower-order. Batters are expected to cherish the surface after settling in but batting won't remain easy during the last few days of the contest.

While it is always tough to make a prediction against the Kiwis in the longest format, India will still start as favourites as they came close to a win in the first Test. Their superior record at the venue, winning 11 and losing seven, will keep them in good stead.

IND vs NZ, 2nd Test prediction: Who will win series finale between India and New Zealand in Mumbai?

India and New Zealand played out a riveting draw in the first Test at Green Park, Kanpur. Ahead of the second and final Test, in Mumbai, Team India will be strengthened by the return of regular captain Virat Kohli. While the home side will look to win the final Test and claim the two-match series, they will also hope for their two senior pros in the form of vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara to end their respective dry spells with the bat.

Both Pujara and Rahane failed to get going in the series opener. While Rahane has only a solitary fifty following his last Test ton, in late 2020, Pujara has not scored a hundred since January 3, 2019. Though the No. 3 batter has played several important knocks since his last triple-figure score, his overall numbers aren't very encouraging.

Thus, former Pakistan captain and left-hander Salman Butt, while analysing India's performance in a video on his YouTube channel, has lashed out Rahane and Pujara. In addition, he feels it is high time that the duo end their barren runs in whites.

Butt told, "Rahane and Pujara need to apply what they have. What are they waiting for? With this amount of experience, one needs to deal with their problems on their own. 'They're not small children....': Former Pak captain lashes out at Team India senior pros Rahane, Pujara

Ajinkya Rahane's form has been a concern for quite some time. The Indian Test vice-captain has had a forgettable run in the longest format following his last triple-figure score, which came in the India-Australia series Down Under in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Since then, many former cricketers and experts have called for Rahane's omission. The right-hander also failed to get going in the India-New Zealand first Test at Green Park, Kanpur. While he got a start in the first innings (35), the 33-year-old failed to cross the double-figure mark in India's second essay. Hence, the pressure is on Rahane to get going and score a daddy hundred.

After the first Test between India and the Black Caps ended in a draw, Team India head coach Rahul Dravid, at the press conference, defended Rahane and said, "Rahane is a quality player, he has done well in past, it's just a matter of time, he would turn things around and he knows that as well. So don't get worried, of course, you would like more runs from him".

'Enough is enough' - Former India player slams Ajinkya Rahane for his low returns ahead of 2nd Test vs NZ

India and New Zealand's first Test, in Kanpur, ended in a riveting draw. Opting to bat first, Ajinkya Rahane-led India posted 345 all-out in the first innings whereas Kiwis made 296 in return. With a 49-run lead, Rahane & Co. declared their second essay at 234-7, setting up a stiff 284-run target.

Kane Williamson's Black Caps were 79 for 1 on the final day but surrendered the momentum from thereon as they were reduced to 155/9 towards the fag end of the Test match. Nonetheless, debutant Rachin Ravindra's 18* (off 91 balls) and Ajaz Patel ensured the match ended in a draw as Kiwis managed to remain at 165/9 at stumps on the final day.

While India had plenty of top-performers in the first Test, such as Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, Wriddhiman Saha, Axar Patel, etc. R Ashwin also played his part with some valuable runs in both innings and returning with a six-wicket haul. However, he made heads turn by becoming the third highest wicket-taker for India in whites, surpassing Harbhajan Singh's tally during the final day's play.

With 419 scalps, Ashwin will look to go past Kapil Dev's tally (434) and grab the second position. After the Kanpur Test, former NZ captain and spin-bowling all-rounder Daniel Vettori has stated that he has often remained surprised and fascinated by the fact that India have preferred Jadeja over Ashwin on many recent occasions, especially while playing overseas. In this regard, he said on ESPNCricinfo, "I think for someone who has been so dominant in so many different scenarios for India. He is so reliable particularly in home conditions. The pace at which he takes wickets is phenomenal. The way he has evolved… his variations… the bowler that he was to the bowler that he has become. He is always learning, always trying to get better."

"All this while he is one of the best spinners for India and in world cricket, he regularly gets dropped. It is fascinating to sit back and see a guy who averages over five wickets in a Test and is a consistent match winner gets left out of the team, and how Jadeja gets preferred over him. But he keeps coming back. He is far from done," added Vettori.

For the unversed, Ashwin wasn't part of India's playing XI in the four Tests versus England in the United Kingdom early this year. Apart from that, he has often been benched with Jadeja getting the preference -- mainly for his batting -- when India tour SENA countries. He, however, remains a confirmed selection whenever India play at home.

Legendary Sunil Gavaskar slammed New Zealand for their timid batting in the second innings of the first Test at the Green Park stadium in Kanpur.

"New Zealand managed to hold on by the skin of their teeth at Kanpur. Their timid batting after a terrific first session on the final day brought India back into the game, and once they started to get wickets in the second session, they simply piled on more pressure as they realised that the visitors were only keen on survival and not looking for a victory," Gavaskar wrote for TOI.

Gavaskar is of the opinion that New Zealand pulled the shutters down completely and that allowed Indian skipper Ajinkya Rahane to set an attacking field.

"At lunchtime, Rahane and Dravid would have been a touch worried, for Latham and Somerville had set up a perfect platform for the following batsmen to play their normal game and take New Zealand home. Then, inexplicably, the shutters were pulled down, and all that it did was allow Rahane to keep men in catching positions," added Gavaskar.

They're not looking for a victory: Sunil Gavaskar slams New Zealand's timid batting in Kanpur Test

India and New Zealand locked horns with each other in the series opener of the two-match Test series at Green Park, Kanpur. The match had plenty of action and drama as the sporting pitch ensured that pacers, spinners as well as batters had something to extract from the 22-yard cricket strip.

Opting to bat first, Ajinkya Rahane-led Team India rode on Shreyas Iyer's 105 and fifties from Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill to post 345 all-out. In reply, NZ were all-out for 296 after half-centuries from Tom Latham and Will Young. Rahane & Co. then declared their second innings at 234-7, courtesy fifties from Iyer and Wriddhiman Saha, as the Kiwis were given a stiff 284-run target. They went to stumps on Day 4 needing 280 more to win whereas India were nine wickets away from going 1-0 up.

Day 5 commenced with the Kiwis going to the lunch break without losing a wicket. However, India initiated their collapse as Black Caps went from 79/1 to 155/9. Nonetheless, Indian bowlers couldn't get rid of the last-wicket pair for the visitors as the match ended with Williamson & Co. 165/9.

Thus, former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has expressed his disappointment with Rahane & Co. failing to go 1-0 up in the series. Speaking on his Youtube channel, Inzy said, "Not sure whether we should give credit to New Zealand or call India unlucky. It was clear even yesterday that New Zealand cannot win the match because they wouldn't have been able to chase down the score (of 284). I feel New Zealand should be given credit for batting through the day on this pitch. I was, however, anticipating that there would be some wear and tear on the fifth day and that the likes of [Ravindra] Jadeja and [Axar] Patel would not let the batsmen play because the ball would spin.

"New Zealand should be commended because apart from [Kane] Williamson, they do not have a star batter in their ranks. But they all put their hands up and put in a combined effort. It's not that one person made a big score and continued to hold one end. Whoever came out to bat performed their duty very ably. They would have been told in the dressing room that they need to spend a lot of time in the middle and not chase after the total," elaborated Inzamam.

He added, "On the other hand, this is a disappointment for India. I didn't think New Zealand would have bat through Day 5 against this Indian bowling attack. India should have bowled them out. Jadeja bowled well for his four wickets but I expected a lot more from all of them. I truly believe that the match should have finished within the first two sessions," concluded Inzamam.

ALSO READ | IND vs NZ: R Ashwin shares how Harbhajan's 2001 spell vs Australia inspired him to become a spinner He added, "On the other hand, this is a disappointment for India. I didn't think New Zealand would have bat through Day 5 against this Indian bowling attack. India should have bowled them out. Jadeja bowled well for his four wickets but I expected a lot more from all of them. I truly believe that the match should have finished within the first two sessions," concluded Inzamam. After the first Test, India will see the return of their regular captain Virat Kohli in the squad. The second and final Test will commence from December 3 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The home side will be eager to finish off the series on a high with a 1-0 scoreline and avenge their WTC final loss versus New Zealand.

India should have bowled them out: Former Pak captain disappointed as India fail to win Kanpur Test vs NZ

India and New Zealand played out a humdinger of a first Test at Green Park, Kanpur. The series opener ended in a riveting draw with Kane Williamson-led New Zealand being 165/9 in pursuit of 284 set by Ajinkya Rahane-led India. When the fifth and final day commenced, all three results were possible as Kiwis needed another 280 runs whereas the home side were in search of nine more wickets.

While New Zealand played out the morning session without losing a single wicket, they surrendered the momentum from thereon. From 79 for 1, NZ were reduced to 155-9 before debutant Rachin Ravindra (18 not out off 91 balls) and Ajaz Patel survived 52 deliveries, for the final wicket, to ensure a draw.

The second and final Test will now begin on December 3, at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, where regular captain Virat Kohli will walk into the playing XI after being rested for the series opener. While India may tweak their bowling combination, mainly replacing Ishant Sharma with another pacer, they are likely to go ahead with five bowlers. Hence, the axe will fall on one of their batters.

Among them, Mayank Agarwal and Ajinkya Rahane had an ordinary run in the Kanpur Test. While Cheteshwar Pujara also couldn't do much, he played a lot of deliveries in the first essay and is likely to hold onto his spot. Thus, former Indian all-rounder Madan Lal recently named the player who should be dropped for the Mumbai Test.

"I don't think so," said Lal on Sports Tak when asked if Rahane will be part of the playing XI for the final Test. "Shreyas Iyer scored valuable runs in both innings, and then Pujara is a batter who has scored runs. He may have not scored big hundreds but Pujara has stayed at the wicket and scored runs. The same cannot be said about Rahane though. So I feel that if you are to make a change, there is only one person whose place Virat can take, which is Ajinkya Rahane," he pointed out.

'I didn't know if I would go on to play Tests,' says R Ashwin after 1st India vs New Zealand Test match

R Ashwin achieved a big feat during the fifth and final day of the first Test between India and New Zealand at Green Park, Kanpur. The off-spinner was five wickets away from surpassing Harbhajan Singh in the list of most wickets for India in red-ball format prior to the Kanpur Test. While he accounted for three scalps in NZ's first essay, he removed opener Tom Latham (52) on the final day to move past Bhajji's wicket-tally.

With this, Ashwin toppled veteran off-spinner Harbhajan to take the third spot in terms of most wickets for India in whites (418 scalps). Here's the top five wicket-takers for India in the purest format after the drawn Kanpur Test:

Anil Kumble - 619

Kapil Dev - 434

R Ashwin - 419*

Harbhajan Singh - 417

Zaheer Khan/Ishant Sharma- 311

Ashwin ended the game with a six-wicket haul as India and New Zealand were involved in a humdinger of a contest in Kanpur, which ended in a draw. In pursuit of 284, the Kiwis were 165/9 but managed to earn a draw and go into the second and final Test, on December 3, with a 0-0 scoreline.

Speaking after the game, the 35-year-old Ashwin revealed that it was Harbhajan's famous spell against Australia in 2001 that inspired him to become a spinner. "These are numbers that are just happening because of the effort I have been putting in.. I am trying to enjoy my game. I am not worried about what number I am surpassing, it is a wonderful milestone. When Harbhajan Singh bowled that famous spell against Australia in 2001, I did not think I would be an off-spinner one day," Ashwin told Shreyas lyer in a video which was posted by bcci.tv.

At the post-match presentation, he had told the broadcasters, "(On moving past Harbhajan's tally) These are milestones that are constantly kept on tab, it's wonderful. Ever since Rahul bhai has taken over, he's kept saying that how many ever wickets you take, how many ever runs you make in 10 years time, you won't remember them. It's the memories that matters so I want to have some special memories going forward in the next 3-4 years."

IND vs NZ: R Ashwin shares how Harbhajan's 2001 spell vs Australia inspired him to become a spinner

India and New Zealand's first Test, in Kanpur, ended in a riveting draw on Monday (November 29). The fifth day started with all three results very much on the cards. Ajinkya Rahane-led India needed 9 more wickets whereas Kane Williamson's New Zealand required another 280 runs, being 4 for 1 at stumps on Day 4.

The contest resumed with NZ ending the first session without losing a single wicket. Nonetheless, the game changed quickly post the lunch break as the visitors slipped to 155-9 after being well-placed at 79 for 1 at one stage. R Ashwin's 3-fer and Ravindra Jadeja's 4 for 40 led India on the brink of a big win before debutant Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel played out 52 deliveries, for the last wicket, to ensure a famous draw in Kanpur.

While Day 5 had plenty of drama and action, both India and New Zealand had to settle for a draw eventually. However, former Aussie spin wizard Shane Warne wasn't impressed with Rahane & Co. for not taking the new ball as soon as it was available during the fag end of the contest.

After the drawn Kanpur Test, stand-in captain Rahane told the broadcasters, "Very good game of cricket, they played really well. We came back really well after the first session. We wanted to get that partnership going. We were looking to bowl 5-6 overs in the end, but we needed that partnership to carry on. I don't think we could have done anything different. The chat with the umps was about the light. As a fielding team, you want to bowl more overs, as a batting unit you don't want to bat in that situation. Shane Warne left baffled, points out India's 'strange tactic' during Day 5 of drawn Kanpur Test

India and New Zealand produced a thrilling end to the first Test at Green Park, Kanpur on Monday (November 29). At the start of the day's play, all three results were on the cards as hosts Ajinkya Rahane-led India needed 9 wickets whereas the Black Caps required 280 more for a win (being 4 for 1).

While New Zealand started the day's play on a bang, going into the lunch session without losing a wicket at 79/1, before Umesh Yadav's strike in the second session led to the Kiwis' collapse. From 79 for 1, the NZ batting line-up slipped to 155 for 9 before the last-wicket stand, between debutant Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel, bailed the Kiwis out of a crisis as they survived 52 balls to ensure a riveting draw.

Thus, world cricket had a close eye on the series opener between India and New Zealand, due to the topsy-turvy contest witnessed at Kanpur. As the pitch had everything for pacers, spinners and batters, the contest went down the wire with plenty of drama and action in the last half hour. Hence, many tweeted regarding the proceedings in Kanpur.

Glenn Maxwell, Australia's limited-overs all-rounder, also tweeted on the IND-NZ Test match. He wrote, "Anyone else watching INDvNZ. How good's Test cricket?" His tweet went viral in no time as the all-rounder also got a reply from Aussie great Shane Warne (who agreed with him and stated how keenly he is awaiting the start of Ashes 2021).

How good’s test cricket: Glenn Maxwell's tweet goes viral during Day 5 of India-NZ Kanpur face-off

India have retained the second spot on the World Test Championship (WTC) points table after a thrilling draw against New Zealand in the first Test of the ongoing two-match series in Kanpur on Monday. Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel combined to deny India a win as they stood tall with an unbeaten stand for the tenth wicket on Day five of the Test match.

Shreyas Iyer made a dream Test debut for India as he notched up a century and a half-century in the two innings respectively. His 105-run knock helped India post 345 runs on the board in the first innings before New Zealand replied with 296 runs in their first innings. Iyer then scored a gritty 65 in the second innings to combine with Wriddhiman Saha (61) to bail India out of trouble and post 234 runs on the board.

New Zealand were handed a target of 284 runs in their final innings with nine wickets left heading into the final day. Opener Tom Lathan (52) and nightwatchman William Somerville (36) batted out the entire first session to keep the visitors in the game before the Indian bowlers got the hosts back into the contest with three wickets in the second session and five wickets in the final session.

However, due to bad light, the game had to be called eleven minutes early as Patel and Ravindra stood tall to deny India the tenth wicket. India were forced to settle for a draw which meant they managed to take only four out of the available twelve points from the Kanpur Test.

India are currently at the second spot on the WTC points table with 30 points from five matches. The teams are noe ranked on the basis of the percentage of points. While the winning teams get 12 points (100%), each team gets 6 points (50%) for a tie and 4 points (33.33%) for a draw. The teams are also penalised for slow over-rate.

Updated World Test Championship points table after India's draw against New Zealand in 1st Test

India head coach Rahul Dravid has backed captain Ajinkya Rahane to come good, saying that he is a quality player who did well for India in the past. He insisted that it is a matter of just one innings for Rahane to get back into form.

In Test matches this year, Rahane has now scored 411 runs in 21 innings at an average of 19.57, with just two half-centuries. A lot was expected of him in the first Test but Rahane registered scores of 35 and 4, resulting in his Test career average going below 40.

"You don`t get worried (about Rahane`s poor form). Of course, I would like more runs coming off the bat of Ajinkya. I am sure he would like a few more runs. He`s a quality player and done well for India in the past. He`s one of those quality players and has got the experience. It is just a matter of innings in a game where he can turn that around. He would like to score more runs and he knows that and we also know that," said Dravid in the post-match press conference.

Dravid shielded from giving hints on the make-up of the playing eleven for the second Test in Mumbai, where regular skipper Virat Kohli will join the squad. "See, we`haven`t decided yet. It will be too early to decide because we were thinking of this Test match. When we will go to Mumbai, we will see the conditions, pitch, the fitness of the players, and consultation with Virat Kohli, who will come as well. Then we will decide who will be a part of the playing eleven."

Dravid was in praise of middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer shining in his debut outing in Test cricket, adding that it was a validation of the system in Indian cricket. Iyer was the top scorer for India in both innings, scoring 105 and 65 on debut, which saw him bag the Player of the Match award.

"I think it`s great to see the young guys come through and perform straightaway on debut. We saw that little bit in the T20 series as well with one or two players who came in and made a good account of themselves. It`s always good to see a young kid come in and do well for India in his first Test match. It`s obviously a reflection of that person but it is also a really good reflection of the Indian system that we have been properly able to develop."

"It is not just` India A, he`s played at Mumbai, at various levels, and at club cricket. But he has developed and grown into a cricketer who can come into the international scene and perform straightaway. Really happy for Shreyas. He has worked really hard and has earned it. It wasn`t easy for him, considering the fact that he has averaged over 50 in first-class crick`t, but hadn`t played first-class cricket for three year` and wouldn`t have reached the level if we hadn`t got the injuries or had people resting. But he got his opportunities and taken it with both hands. He`s really shown his quality."

The 48-year-old hailed Ravichandran Ashwin`s achievement of surpassing Harbhajan Singh to be the third-highest wicket-take for India in Test cricket with 418 scalps, choosing to focus more on his evolution and growth as an off-spinner. "It`s a phenomenal achievement. Harbhajan Singh was a really fine bowler and someone I played a lot of cricket with. Terrific bowler for India and what Ashwin has done to go past him in 80 Test matches is a phenomenal achievement."

"Ashwin is one of those guys who has been an absolute match-winner for India. Even today, on this difficult wicket, the way he pulled us back into the game, that third morning with that spell of 11 overs was absolutely phenomenal and then today, just to keep us alive in the game, constantly threatening on wickets like this, is a tribute to his skill and ability."

"I think he`s just evolved and kept growing. He`s one of the guys who just keeps thinking about the game and keeps evolving as well as changing. That is why he is got where he has. You don`t achieve what Ashwin has without growing, improving` and evolving. It`s a pleasure to have someone like him in the dressing room and really happy for him to achieve what he has," concluded Dravid.

The 35-year-old returned with a three-wicket haul in NZ's first essay and removed openers Will Young and Latham, in the final innings, to topple Bhajji.

Ever since Rahul bhai has taken over, he's kept saying that how many ever wickets you take, how many ever runs you make in 10 years time, you won't remember them. It's the memories that matters so I want to have some special memories going forward in the next 3-4 years."

New Zealand pulled off a thrilling draw against India in the first Test in Kanpur on Tuesday (September 29) after tail-ender Azaj Patel and debutant Rachin Ravindra showcased remarkable resistance to deny India the final wicket towards the end of the final session on Day 5 of the series-opener on Monday.

Chasing the target of 284 runs, New Zealand resumed their second innings on Monday with opener Tom Latham (52) and nightwatchman William Somerville combining to add 76 runs for the second wicket. The duo displayed remarkable grittiness to hand the first session to New Zealand on the final day before Umesh Yadav dismissed Somerville.

New Zealand then lost three wickets in the post-lunch session before losing another five in the final session. However, the Indian bowlers could only manage to get eight wickets on the final day of the Test match as Patel (2) and Ravindra (18) played out 114 balls between them to deny India victory and help New Zealand draw the game.

Questions were raised over India's timing of declaring their second innings late on Day 4 while Axar Patel and Wriddhiman Saha's pace of scoring runs during their unbeaten stand of 67 runs for the seventh wicket on Day 4 also became a talking point. However, Rahane defended India's timing of declaration and said the hosts couldn't have done anything differently to win the game.

"Not really (declared earlier?), we tried our best. They played really well. I think the way we came back in the second session was good. The fast bowlers too bowled really well," Rahane said when asked about the timing of declaration on Day 4.

"We wanted to get that partnership going, put some runs on board. Saha and Axar batted really well. Before that Shreyas and Ashwin's partnership was crucial. We wanted to bowl four overs yesterday and 90-95 in all.

"I don't think we could have done anything differently," he added.

The second Test between the two sides is all set to get underway from December 03 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Regular skipper Virat Kohli will be making his comeback in the second Test and will be leading the side.

Riding on Tom Latham's 52 and Rachin Ravindra's 18 not out, off 91 balls, the visitors ensured a draw in the last half hour of Day Five.

Ahead of the second and final Test, at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, India have some selection issues to address. With regular captain Virat Kohli set to return for the series finale, on December 3, the Rahul Dravid-led think tank will have to drop a batter from the top or the middle-order. In this regard, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has suggested an 'out-of-the-box' name who can accompany Shubman Gill at the order, if Mayank Agarwal is dropped.

“It’s a toss-up between Mayank Agarwal and Ajinkya Rahane. I would think on those two. That’s the toss-up that Virat Kohli has to make. Whether he wants to go with Mayank Agarwal and give him another go or whether [he thinks] Ajinkya Rahane hasn’t got enough runs in the last 10-12 Test matches after that Melbourne Test so he goes out. It’s a tough call, definitely a tough call. It depends on whom the sword falls on,” said Wasim Jaffer in a chat with ESPNCricinfo.

“I think I will open with Saha if at all Mayank Agarwal goes out because then everybody bats out of their position. Pujara will open and then Ajinkya Rahane will bat at some other position… If Saha opens then everyone bats at the same position. And you can do that in Indian conditions with Saha. Is it a long-term call? Definitely not because India will go to South Africa. So, they’ll have to reconsider their top-six for Mumbai,” concluded the meme-specialist.

Given that spinners have been the go-to-bowlers, India is likely to retain R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. On the other hand, they are most likely to again go ahead with two pacers, hence, the axe will fall on one of the batters. Given that Mayank returned with scores of 13 and 17 in the series opener, the right-hander might lose his spot whereas Saha can be an interesting choice as a makeshift opener.

Resuming the final session at 125/4, Indian bowlers clawed further deep as Axar Patel had Henry Nicholls adjudged LBW. He departed for 24 off 112.In the 79th over, Tom Blundell was bowled round his legs by Ashwin. India took the second new ball in the 84th over as the match reached the endgame. With the light fading and time running out for the hosts, Ravindra Jadeja struck in quick succession to send Kylie Jamieson and Tim Southee back into the dugout. Virat Kohli was rested for the three T20Is between India and New Zealand and also remained out of action for the two-match Test series opener, at Kanpur. Nonetheless, the 33-year-old is gearing up to return to action on the 22-yard cricket strip for the second and final Test versus the Black Caps, to be held at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on December 3.

With Kohli set to return and walk into the playing XI, India will have selection issues as the Rahul Dravid-led team management will have to drop someone from the top or middle order. Given that Mayank Agarwal might be dropped, following his low returns in the Kanpur Test, it will also lead to changes in the opening pair. If they consider a batter to be dropped from No. 3 to 7, the onus will fall on Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja. While Pujara and Rahane are the senior pros, the duo have disappointed for long with the bat. On the other hand, Iyer and Jadeja's returns with the bat in the series opener cannot be easily overlooked.

Speaking on the YouTube channel Khelneeti, former Indian all-rounder Nikhil Chopra talked about Rahane's dreadful run in the whites and called for his omission, with Kohli replacing him in the series finale. The cricketer-turned-commentator Chopra opined that the Indian think tank should drop Rahane rather than Mayank. "Instead of dropping Mayank Agarwal, Ajinkya Rahane should make way for Virat Kohli. Rahane doesn't have a great average and it shows his struggles in recent years," Chopra said.

He also added, "Youngsters should be given a chance to play in India. It is important to give them confidence ahead of an overseas tour. If you are looking to drop Agarwal, then I'd rather pick Suryakumar Yadav for the Mumbai Test."

It will be interesting to see if who will make way for regular captain Kohli for the second and final Test in Mumbai. While Rahane's form has been poor for quite sometime, he remains Kohli's deputy in whites. Though he had an ordinary run in the series opener, Rahane led India reasonably well in the Kanpur Test, which ended in a draw with India needing one more wicket to win the contest.

R Ashwin dismissed the well-set batter Tom Latham, for 52, on Day 5 of the first Test between India and New Zealand at Kanpur. Latham, who missed out on a well-deserved century in the first innings, was standing tall in the middle -- with visitors chasing 284 on the final day -- before he tried to cut but played it down to hit the stumps. With Latham's dismissal, Ajinkya Rahane & Co. not only moved closer to a win in the series opener, but Ashwin also achieved a big feat under his belt.

Ashwin, who made his Test debut in 2011, moved past veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh's wicket-tally (417) in the format to become the third-highest wicket-taker for the country in the purest format. The top-five wicket-takers for India in Tests are as follows:

Anil Kumble - 619

Kapil Dev - 434

R Ashwin - 418*

Harbhajan Singh - 417

Zaheer Khan/Ishant Sharma - 311

Talking about Ashwin's career, the wily off-spinner has so far accounted for 30 five-fers and 7 ten-wicket hauls in the purest format. The 35-year-old has 291 wickets at home, 123 scalps in away Tests whereas also has 4 victims in neutral venues. The spinner has been most dominant while playing at home but has also enjoyed success in Sri Lanka and West Indies. In India's recent assignments in SENA countries, Ashwin has remained economical and had some success in England and Australia. For the unversed, he was India's second-highest wicket-taker in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.

The New Zealand bowlers ran through the Indian top-order during the first session of Day 4 of the ongoing first Test between the two sides in Kanpur on Sunday. Resuming their second innings from 1/14 on the penultimate day of the Test match, the hosts were blown away under pressure as Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson combined to wreak havoc with the ball.

Both Cheteshwar Pujara and stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane failed to deliver as their struggles continued in the Kanpur Test. The duo was sent back cheaply when India needed them the most under pressure. Pujara was the first Indian batter to be dismissed on Day 4 as he was removed by Jamieson on 22 off 33 balls. The experienced right-hander equalled an unwanted record after another failure in the whites.

Pujara equalled former India captain Ajit Wadekar, who had gone 39 matches without scoring a hundred while batting at no.3 for India in Tests. Pujara has now gone 39 matches without a century for Team India in the longest format and will be hopeful of breaking the unwanted streak in the next game. Earlier, Pujara had played 38 innings without scoring a hundred between 2013 to 2016.

Ajinkya Rahane fails again

A number of former cricketers and experts have raised concerns over Rahane's recent struggles with the bat and questioned his spot in the Test team. Rahane, who is leading the side in the absence of regular skipper Kohli, was dismissed after scoring only 4 runs in India's second innings on Sunday.

He had scored 35 runs in the first innings of the ongoing Kanpur Test. Pujara equals unwanted record, Rahane fails again as India struggle in Kanpur Test against New Zealand

Team India star Shreyas Iyer had a dream Test debut against New Zealand in the ongoing series-opener between the two sides at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. After a magnificent century in India's first innings, Iyer followed it up with a brilliant half-century in the second innings to become the first India batter to score a ton and a fifty on Test debut.

India's top-order suffered a terrible collapse in their second innings on Day 4 of the Test match on Sunday as the visitors were left reeling at 51/5 at one point. Iyer showed remarkable grit and batted well to bail the hosts out of trouble with his terrific knock.

He combined with R Ashwin (32) to post a 52-run stand for the sixth wicket before adding 64 runs for the seventh wicket with Wriddhiman Shaha, who also played an amazing knock of 61 runs.

Iyer revealed the advice he had recieved from head coach Rahu Dravid before going in to bat and also said it was not the first time that he found himself in such a pressure situation as he has played such knocks in domestic cricket as well.

"I had been in this situation before as well, not with the Indian team but with my Ranji team. Mindset was to play the session and play as many balls as possible. I wasn't thinking too far ahead, was just focusing on the present," Iyer told the official broadcaster at the end of the 4th day's play in Kanpur.

He revealed Dravi had asked him to stay out their in the middle for as long as possible and stay as long as he can. . "Rahul Sir had told me to bat as many balls as possible and I was determined to do that," said the right-hander, who scored 105 and 65 in the two innings of his debut Test match.

He revealed Dravi had asked him to stay out their in the middle for as long as possible and stay as long as he can. . "Rahul Sir had told me to bat as many balls as possible and I was determined to do that," said the right-hander, who scored 105 and 65 in the two innings of his debut Test match. New Zealand lost opener Will Young (2) cheaply in their second innings as R Ashwin struck early for India toward the closure of Day 4. New Zealand now need 280 runs to win with nine wickets to spare and a day in hand. Indian are in a strong position in the Test match and will be looking to bundle out the visitors quickly on the final day and seal the Test match.

Shreyas Iyer reveals advice from head coach Rahul Dravid after dream Test debut against New Zealand

Debutant Shreyas Iyer showed his ice-cool temperament under pressure to stand tall with a fine half-century which placed India in a commanding position as they set up a stiff victory target of 284 for New Zealand on the fourth day of the opening Test here on Sunday.

India declared at 234 for 7 for an overall lead of 283 and gave the Black Caps four tricky overs to face under fading light during which they managed four runs and lost opener Will Young to Ravichandran Ashwin.

With that scalp, Ashwin became the joint third-highest wicket-taker in Indian cricket with Harbhajan Singh (417 wickets). The highest ever fourth-innings chase by a visiting team in India is 276 by Viv Richards' West Indies against the Dilip Vengsarkar-led India in 1987 at the Feroz Shah Kotla, which placed statistics on the home team's side.

The honours for India on the day were shared by Iyer (65 off 125 balls), who became the first Indian to score a hundred and fifty on debut and the plucky Wriddhiman Saha (61 not out, 126 balls), who battled stiff neck to make an invaluable contribution which will certainly count a lot in the final context of the match.

Axar Patel (28 not out) then conjured another 67-run eighth-wicket stand with Saha to slowly take the match out of the Black Caps' grasp. If New Zealand are still in the match, credit must go to their tireless seam bowling duo of Tim Southee (22-2-75-3) and Kyle Jamieson (17-6-40-3), who showed an exhibition of top-class bowling on an unresponsive track.

However, it will now depend on how much time it takes for India's spin troika to roll over New Zealand, whose openers showed a lot of gumption on the second afternoon and third morning. Also if skipper Williamson can do something mind-blowing with the willow, there might just be a great contest on the cards.

If the morning belonged to New Zealand's bowlers, who decided to prolong Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane's bad patch, the afternoon was Iyer's time under the sun while Saha did his bit, reaching his sixth half-century in the final session of the day.

This is certainly an innings which will give Saha's Test career a new lease of life. This was after stand-in captain Rahane and his temporary deputy Pujara's saga of failures continued leaving India tottering at 51 for 5 in the first 75 minutes of the morning session.

But credit to Iyer, who once again displayed steely temperament on the way to his second 50-plus score in the match, hitting eight fours and a huge six over long off against Will Sommerville. His best shot, however, was an inside out lofted drive off left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel. It was a difficult shot that was perfectly executed.

It was followed by a square cut in the same over as Williamson erred by bowling his spinners for way too long. That was proved when Southee removed Iyer at the stroke of tea when he tried to pull one that was drifting down leg side.
Credit should also be given to Saha as he batted with an open-chested stance compared to his usual side-on which reduces the pronounced neck movement.

He played his customary game of dabs and flicks and also produced an occasional slog pull for six as his innings had four fours and a six. However, on the fourth morning, Southee, a practitioner of conventional swing bowling, took a master-class on how to bowl on an unresponsive Indian track, classically setting up the batters.

But before Southee got into the act, Kyle Jamieson (13-6-26-3) targeted Pujara's (22 off 33 balls) ribcage, getting one to rear up on this dead track and it brushed the India No. 3's gloves into the hands of keeper Tom Blundell.
Rahane (4 off 15 balls) is out of form and the world knows about that.

However, Ajaz Patel (17-3-60-1), who has looked way below Test class, then produced his best delivery of the match. An arm ball that was fired in with the angle caught Rahane plumb in-front while he tried to play a forward defensive prod.

Mayank Agarwal (17) did all the hardwork in the first hour but Southee (15.2-3-48-3) set him up with deliveries that came into him from good length spot as he played with a closed bat-face.

Then he pitched on the same spot and, to Agarwal's horror, it shaped slightly away and he had committed to a closed bat-face. The result was a regulation catch to Tom Latham in the second slip. For Ravindra Jadeja (0), Southee used the width of the crease with an angular delivery that wrapped him on the pads.

India vs New Zealand: Debutant Shreyas Iyer, gritty Wriddhiman Saha set up an intriguing final day

India batter Shreyas Iyer continued his purple patch on his Test debut against New Zealand on Day 4 of the ongoing series-opener between the two sides in Kanpur on Sunday. Iyer scripted history with the bat as he became the first Indian to score a century and a half-century in his debut Test match.

The right-hander came out to bat at no.5 when India were reeling at 45/3 having lost both Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in quick succession before Mayank Agarwal was sent packing quickly as well. Iyer survived an early scare as a thick edge against Tim Southee saw the ball landing in no man's land.

Iyer went on to make the most of the opportunity and slammed a brilliant half-century under pressure to bail India out of trouble and help them stage a comeback in the game.

Iyer, who had scored a magnificent 105 in India's first innings of the Test match, notched up 65 runs in their second innings on Sunday. He combined with R Ashwin (32) to post a 52-run stand for the sixth wicket before stitching a 64-run stand for the sixth wicket with Wriddhiman Saha.

With his maiden half-century in Tests, Iyer scripted a massive feat as he became the first Indian with a ton and a fifty on Test debut. He became the tenth batter overall in the world to achieve the stellar feat. He also joined the legendary Sunil Gavaskar in an elite list by becoming the third Indian with two fifty-plus scores on Test debut.

Gavaskar had notched up 65 and 67 on his Test debut against West Indies in 1971 while Dilawar Hussain was the first Indian to achieve the feat when he scored 59 and 57 respectively in the two innings of his debut Test against England in 1933-34.

Incidentally, Iyer had received his maiden Test cap from batting legend Gavaskar himself before the start of the Test match on Thursday and did well to join an elite list featuring him with his ton and half-century on debut. Iyer's 65-run-knock helped India stretch their lead past the 200-run mark and get into a comfortable position against the visitors after a top-order collapse.

Saha and Axar Patel are currently out in the middle for India as the hosts look to take their lead close to 300 runs before inviting New Zealand to bat in their second innings of the game.

Shreyas Iyer scripts history, becomes 1st Indian to slam ton & half-century on Test debut

Axar Patel wreaked havoc on New Zealand batting line-up on Day 3 of the ongoing first Test between India and the Kiwis in Kanpur on Saturday. Axar picked up a five-wicket haul as India bundled out the Kiwis for 296 runs in their first innings to gain a crucial lead of 49 runs ahead of their second innings.

It was a brilliant spell from Axar, who spun a web around the New Zealand batting line-up and continuously troubled the Kiwi batters. Axar finished with brilliant figures of 5/62 in his 4 overs and was the pick of the bowlers for Team India in the series-opener at Kanpur.

Former India cricketer Wasi Jaffer, who is known for his witty tweets and hilarious memes on Twitter, took a dig at Axar and pointed out his 'only mistake' in the Test match after his sensational spell. Jaffer, who is known for entertaining cricket fans on Twitter with his funny side, posted a picture of the match ball which was gifted to Axar after his five-wicket haul and said the only mistake the left-arm spinner made was putting the wrong date on the ball.

"The only mistake Axar Patel made today was putting wrong date on the match ball. 27th November hai bapu @akshar2026 #INDvNZ," Jaffer wrote in a tweet.

Left-arm spinner Axar Patel claimed figures of 5-62 to help India grab a handy 49-run first-innings lead in the opening test against New Zealand on Saturday. The home side suffered a setback, however, with Shubman Gill`s late dismissal as they finished day three on 14-1 at Kanpur`s Green Park Stadium.

Kyle Jamieson bowled Gill for one and troubled Cheteshwar Pujara who remained unbeaten on nine.
Opener Mayank Agarwal was on four not out with India 63 ahead in the first match of the two-test series.

"This is the kind of pitch where you can`t expect wickets all the time," Patel said after registering his fifth five-wicket haul in seven innings.

"You have to be consistent with your line and length. The odd ball turned and occasionally it kept low. I think the wicket will slow down further."

Earlier, after inducing several edges that fell agonisingly short of fielders, Ravichandran Ashwin ended India`s 66-over wait for a first wicket by ending a 151-run opening stand between Tom Latham and Will Young.

Young, having made a career-best 89, edged Ashwin and substitute wicketkeeper KS Bharat - replacing Wriddhiman Saha who was being treated for a stiff neck - grabbed a low catch.

Young was initially ruled not out, but India reviewed that decision, which had to be overturned after replays confirmed the edge.

Replying to India`s first-innings total of 345, New Zealand were cruising at 197-1 in the morning session with Latham approaching his hundred and skipper Kane Williamson in the middle.

Soon after India took the second new ball, however, seamer Umesh Yadav trapped Williamson lbw on the stroke of lunch.

Williamson, who made 18, reviewed the decision, but replays confirmed the ball would have hit the top of his middle stump. Patel ran through the New Zealand middle order removing Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls and denying Latham his century.

Latham made 95 before stepping out against Patel, only to be stumped after a fine knock that included 10 fours.
Ravindra Jadeja dismissed debutant Rachin Ravindra and Ashwin (3-82) claimed the last two wickets as New Zealand were bowled out for 296.
