Former England captain Michael Vaughan has raised concerns over the ECB’s handling of Jofra Archer’s workload and availability, arguing that centrally contracted players should not place franchise cricket ahead of Test commitments. Ahead of England’s home Test series against the New Zealand, Vaughan questioned the decision to allow several England players to remain in the IPL despite the first Test at Lord’s beginning on June 4. Archer was left out of the squad for the first match, though he is expected to be considered later in the series. Speaking on Cricbuzz, Vaughan clarified that his criticism was aimed at the system rather than Archer himself. England and India just featured in perhaps one of the best five-match Test series in recent times, with both sharing honours at the end of it. Barring the result, all matches reaching day five, with almost all getting wrapped up inside the final session, answered queries or even concerns surrounding the format’s future. Even though the full-packed houses at different venues across the UK reflected the country’s love for Test cricket, its board fears that the introduction of a two-tier Test system, currently under work, could see England fall into the second bracket sometime, potentially compromising its age-old rivalries against Australia (Ashes) and India. Meanwhile, to further improve WTC ahead of the next cycle, which begins in July 2027, the ICC formed a working group last month, led by former New Zealand batter Roger Twose, during its annual conference. Even though the Big 3, including India, England and Australia, have always kept Test cricket paramount, other boards feel pressurised trying to balance the Test cricket calendar with the congested franchise-based T20 leagues worldwide. Also read | Ashes hopefuls Konstas, McSweeney in Australia-A squad for red-ball tour of India Speaking on the same lines, ECB Chairman Richard Thompson rejected this idea, saying the two-tier system is not the answer to improving Test cricket structure, further warning boards of its complications should the ICC introduce it. "There's a lot of options that we've got to look at - tiers would be one of them," Thompson said. "We wouldn't want, as England, we may go through a fallow period, and that means, what, we fall into Division Two and we don't play Australia and India? That couldn't happen. There has to be a sense that common sense needs to play out here." On the other hand, Todd Greenberg, Cricket Australia’s (CA) CEO - another influential voice on this subject - feels the top-earning boards must do more than just a bit to support those struggling on and off the field. He urged the Big 3 to step up and help smaller nations' cricket grow, mainly by working on improving their first-class cricket. "The real challenge here is what role do we all play," Greenberg said in a chat on SEN Radio on Wednesday (Aug 6). “When I say we, those three countries that [are] putting resources and energy into Test cricket, what role do we have to help others make sure that they step up because it's in our interest to see a strong West Indies, a strong Pakistan, New Zealand, [and] South Africa. We want those countries being strong in this format of the game, but clearly they're going to need help. They can't do it alone. It's incumbent on all of cricket to help.” He, however, admitted being open to the idea of a two-tier Test system should it serve the bigger purpose and involve fewer complications. "My open mind is in reference to, if it helps grow the opportunities for those other countries to be stronger, and have better resources in Test match cricket, if it does that, then I'm open for it," he said. "But if it doesn't achieve that, and it actually affects the opposite, then I wouldn't be supportive."

"Several are exploring their options and could return home," the Telegraph Sport reported, quoting an unnamed agent representing foreign players in Pakistan. “It’s business as usual, but obviously, if anything else happens in the next 24 hours, you’d imagine people will just want to leave," the agent continued.

Not only the ECB but the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is trying to bring home their two cricketers involved in the PSL - Nahid Rana and Rishad Hossain, from Pakistan.
Per Cricbuzz, the BCB is monitoring their cricketers’ condition in the country after a drone strike near the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday afternoon (May 8) threw PSL 2025 into uncertainty, forcing PCB to postpone two matches, raising serious concerns surrounding the safety of overseas players, including Bangladesh and English players.
The report also claims that both cricketers are unwilling to stay back for the ongoing PSL 2025.
"The Board is working closely with both the PCB and the Bangladesh High Commission to make certain that the cricketers feel safe and secure during their stay in Pakistan. Furthermore, the BCB is coordinating with the relevant authorities to ensure that all arrangments are in place to facilitate the eventual departure of the players from Pakistan in a timely and secure manner," BCB said in a statement on Thursday.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board informed that they are in constant communication with both the players. "The BCB attaches the highest priority to the safety and security of its players," it added.

England batter Harry Brook has withdrawn from the upcoming 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the second consecutive year, putting him at risk of a two-year ban from future editions of the cash-rich league.

DC had acquired Brook for $716,000 (₹6.25 crore) in the last auction. Neither the IPL nor Brook has provided an official reason for his decision.

Brook’s withdrawal may trigger a two-year IPL ban, as per a rule introduced ahead of the 2025 mega auction. The rule, established in response to multiple last-minute withdrawals, states: "Any overseas player who registers for the auction and, after being picked, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season will be banned from participating in the IPL and IPL auction for two seasons. The only exception will be for an injury or medical condition, which must be confirmed by the player's home board."
Last year, Brook pulled out of the IPL to be with his family following his grandmother’s passing, which also led him to miss England’s Test series in India. The upcoming IPL season for Delhi begins on March 24, with Delhi Capitals facing Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). In addition to finding a replacement for Brook, Capitals has yet to announce their captain for the season.
Brook previously played in the 2023 edition for Sunrisers Hyderabad, scoring 190 runs in 11 matches at an average of 22.11. His standout performance was a century against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

An ECB statement read: "Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in ECB competitions following an independent assessment of his bowling action.

"Shakib's action was reported by the standing umpires while he was playing for Surrey in the County Championship match against Somerset in September.

"Shakib completed an independent assessment at Loughborough University earlier this month, which found that the elbow extension in his bowling action exceeded the 15 degree threshold as defined in the regulations.

"This suspension takes effect from the receipt of the independent assessment on 10 December 2024."

Shakib, who has not signed a contract with an English county for the 2025 season, is ineligible to bowl in ECB competitions until he has passed an independent re-assessment of his bowling action.

Pakistan Super League (PSL) could be held without star English players next season as ECB’s new policy denies NOCs to centrally contracted cricketers to skip premier domestic tournaments for T20-based franchise cricket coinciding with it. Per the latest report, the T20 freelancers claim to have been blindsided by the ECB’s new policy on NOCs as they seek legal action against the board.

Though the ECB chief executive Richard Gould feels the policy was designed to ‘protect the integrity of the sport’, the top-tier T20 freelancers, the players without national contracts and on white-ball-only deals with their respective counties, are of a different opinion, feeling this policy restricts their chances of plying their trade elsewhere.

While some players reacted furiously to this new policy, which the board approved on Wednesday, the others have discussed options with the Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA) and among themselves in a WhatsApp group chat.

"The PCA's legal team is currently completing a thorough check of the implementation of the policy," Daryl Mitchell, the PCA's interim chief executive, said in a chat with ESPNcricinfo. "The PCA is continuing to source considered opinions and potential consequences of this policy from players and player representatives."

The ECB’s new policy is a response to curb the transfer of top talent drawn towards the franchise-based T20 Leagues worldwide, the most significant of which is the Major League Cricket (MLC), with the England players also featuring in Lanka Premier League (LPL), the T10 tournaments in the Cayman Islands and Zimbabwe, and also in well-established Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Besides, in 2025, the PSL will also be staged during the April-May window, unlike in February-March for all these years, which will again coincide with the County Championship; the ECB is unlikely to grant NOCs to players with all-format county contracts to appear in that tournament.

This new policy will, however, impact players like Jason Roy and Alex Hales, who missed parts of Blast this year to feature in the MLC and LPL, respectively.

No harm to IPL

Though this policy restricts contracted players to skip all-format domestic tournaments for franchise-based leagues, IPL remains an exception, as promised by the ECB to the BCCI.

Per the earlier reports, all boards have written to the BCCI, promising the availability of their players (picked in the IPL 2025 mega auction) for the complete season for the upcoming three editions.

Meanwhile, IPL 2025 will get underway from March 14 onwards next year.

Blow to PSL as ECB to deny NOCs to centrally contracted players for T20 franchise league under new policy

The notion that interest-rate decisions will be made meeting by meeting. Based on incoming data has been emphasised by federal reserve chair Jerome Powell for the past several months. However, critics say this approach is creating volatility and weighing on the economy instead.

Is the Fed Right in Waiting for Data for Forward Guidance ?

The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced a significant reduction in interest rates, lowering them by 25 basis points to 3.25 per cent. This decision, made during the ECB's latest meeting on Thursday, reflects the bank's confidence in the ongoing disinflationary trend within the eurozone according to a detailed report by AFP.

Consumer prices in the bloc rose by 1.7 per cent year on year in September, according to the EU's data agency Eurostat, 0.1 percentage points less than the initial estimate.

The ECB's move comes on the heels of a similar rate cut last month, indicating a strategic approach to managing inflation as economic conditions evolve. In a statement released following the announcement, the ECB noted that "the incoming information on inflation shows that the disinflationary process is well on track." This sentiment underscores the bank's belief that inflation is stabilising and moving towards its target levels.

Inflation trends and economic outlook

The latest data suggests that while inflation may experience temporary increases in the coming months, it is expected to decline towards the ECB's target throughout next year. The central bank's proactive measures aim to foster economic stability and growth within the eurozone, which has faced various challenges over recent years.

Analysts view this rate cut as a crucial step in supporting both consumers and businesses amid fluctuating economic conditions. By reducing borrowing costs, the ECB hopes to encourage spending and investment, which are vital for sustained economic recovery.

Market reactions and future implications

Following the announcement, financial markets reacted positively, with many investors expressing optimism about the potential for increased economic activity in response to lower interest rates. The ECB's decision is anticipated to have far-reaching implications for various sectors, including housing, automotive, and consumer goods.

Experts suggest that this rate cut could also influence other central banks' policies globally as they navigate their own inflation challenges. The interconnectedness of global economies means that decisions made by major institutions like the ECB can set trends that resonate far beyond Europe.

As the eurozone continues to grapple with economic uncertainties, the ECB's commitment to monitoring inflation closely will be crucial. The central bank has indicated its readiness to adjust its strategies as necessary to ensure that inflation remains under control while promoting growth.

Hence, the ECB's recent interest rate cut signifies a pivotal moment for the eurozone economy. With inflation showing signs of cooling and expectations for future stability, stakeholders across various sectors will be watching closely as these developments unfold. The path forward remains dynamic, but the ECB's proactive stance offers a glimmer of hope for continued economic recovery in Europe.

ECB cuts interest rates again as inflation eases in Eurozone

Transgender women will be unable to feature in the top two tiers of the new women's domestic structure or the women's Hundred, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced on Thursday.

The updated policy mirrors last year's decision by the International Cricket Council, which banned anyone who has gone through male puberty from taking part in women's international games.

Transgender participation has become a hot-button issue as different sports try to balance inclusivity with ensuring fair competition.

International governing bodies in a number of other sports including cycling, swimming and athletics have also effectively banned transgender competitors.

The ECB said it had consulted "relevant science and medical evidence" and considered "fairness, safety and inclusion".

However, it confirmed tier three of the new domestic system, which is set to launch next year, plus recreational cricket, will welcome individuals in the gender with which they identify.

That comes with the caveat of an already-established "disparity policy", which covers anyone with an appreciable strength, stamina and/or physique advantage that could cause a safety or fairness issue.

A statement from the ECB, which will roll out the new policy in time for the 2025 domestic season, said: "The ECB recognises that transgender participation is a complex area, with many strongly held views, and it is impossible to balance all the considerations.

"We want everyone to feel included and welcome in our sport, and believe the position reached strikes an appropriate balance by ensuring fairness in the elite game while ensuring inclusivity at a recreational level, with specific safeguards in place to manage disparities and ensure safety."

The ECB's existing policy had dictated that anyone identifying as female could compete in professional club and England pathway teams, so long as they had written clearance.

ECB bans transgender women from women's professional cricket

The European Central Bank is likely to cut interest rates again on Thursday, arguing that inflation within the eurozone is now largely tamed and the economy is stagnating.

That would be the first successive reduction in 13 years and emphasise a policy shift for the euro zone's central bank from inflation-fighting to sheltering economic growth, which has lagged well behind that of the United States for two years in a row.

The latest batch of economic data is likely to have sealed the deal within the ECB in favour of a rate cut since business activity, sentiment surveys, and inflation readings for September came in below estimates.

Several of the ECB officials, including the president herself, Christine Lagarde, have signalled the possibility of a fresh cut in borrowing costs, which is likely this month after recent releases, thus leading investors to fully discount the move.

"The trends in the real economy and inflation support the case for lower rates," Holger Schmieding, an economist at Berenberg, said.

A quarter-point cut on Thursday would take the rate that the ECB pays on banks' deposits to 3.25 per cent, while money markets nearly fully price in three further cuts by March 2025.

Lagarde and colleagues are unlikely to provide any explicit clues about what to look forward to on Thursday, repeating their mantra that decisions will be taken "meeting by meeting" responding to incoming data.

But most ECB watchers think the die is cast for cuts at every meeting.

"The implicit signal is likely to be that another cut is very likely in December unless the data improve," Paul Hollingsworth, an economist at BNP-Paribas, said.

Inflation & Growth

The ECB can now rightly claim to have nearly tamed the worst inflation rise in a generation.

Prices grew by just 1.8 per cent last month. While inflation may edge above the ECB's 2 per cent target by the end of this year, it is likely to stay there or slightly lower for the foreseeable future.

But the economy has paid a heavy price for this.

The high interest rates have sucked investment and economic growth, which has battled for nearly two years. The latest statistics, which also include those on industrial output and bank lending, suggest more of the same in the coming months.

The labour market, which has been exceptionally strong, is also starting to look a bit soft with the vacancy rate - or the proportion of vacant jobs as a share of the total - abating from record highs.

This has thrown fuel on the fire of pressure mounting on the ECB to ease policy before it's too late.

"Now we face a new risk: undershooting target inflation, which could stifle economic growth," Portuguese central banker Mario Centeno said recently. "Fewer jobs and reduced investment would add to the sacrifice ratio already endured."

The problem is that some of this weakness stems from structural issues - including energy costs that are too high and low competitiveness hobbling Europe's industrial powerhouse, Germany.

These challenges cannot be overcome with lower interest rates alone, although they can help at the margin by making capital cheaper.

"We cannot ignore the headwinds to growth," ECB board member Isabel Schnabel said. "At the same time, monetary policy cannot resolve structural issues."

"Fewer jobs and reduced investment would add to the sacrifice ratio already endured." The problem is that some of this weakness stems from structural issues - including energy costs that are too high and low competitiveness hobbling Europe's industrial powerhouse, Germany. These challenges cannot be overcome with lower interest rates alone, although they can help at the margin by making capital cheaper. "We cannot ignore the headwinds to growth," ECB board member Isabel Schnabel said. "At the same time, monetary policy cannot resolve structural issues." This article includes reporting from Reuters.

ECB poised for second consecutive rate cut amid economic stagnation

England Cricket Board (ECB) chief executive Richard Gould and chairman Richard Thompson say that the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy without India will not be in cricket's interest. The statement comes as India are yet to answer on their participation in the ICC event which is scheduled to take place in Pakistan in February-March next year.

"It would not be in cricket's interests for India not to be playing in the Champions Trophy," Thompson said as reported by cricket news website ESPNCricinfo.

"It's interesting, with Jay Shah - the former secretary of the BCCI and now chair of the ICC - [who] is going to have a big role to play in that. There's geopolitics, and then there's cricketing geopolitics. I think they'll find a way. They have to find a way," he added.

India and Pakistan do not play bilateral cricket due to political tensions between the governments of two countries. Last year, India refused to send its team to Pakistan for Asia Cup and the tournament was eventually scheduled in the hybrid model with Sri Lanka hosting all of India's matches including the final.

Pakistan, however, did travel to India for the 2023 ODI World Cup later in the year and is expecting India to travel for the Champions Trophy next year.

"If you play the Champions Trophy without India, or Pakistan, the broadcast rights aren't there, and we need to protect them," Gould said.

"They [Pakistan] are the host nation. We've seen the developments going on, and we're all waiting to understand whether India are going to travel. That's the key. We think there are some discussions and relationships where they need to be. I know Pakistan are expecting India to travel. There are lots of different alternatives and contingencies available if that doesn't happen," he added.

As of now, Pakistan has marked Karachi, Rawalpindi and Lahore as the venues of the tournament with all of India's matches being played in Lahore.

'They'll find a way,' says ECB chair on India travelling to Pakistan for ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Former England World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan feels the Jos Buttler-led side would require the services of Test skipper Ben Stokes and red-ball specialist Joe Root for the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy (CT). The mega event is set to be held in Pakistan early next year. Morgan, who will be seen in action in the International Masters League in India in Nov-Dec, feels Stokes and Root's availability will bolster England's chances to win their maiden CT title. Root hasn't been part of the ODI setup for long, having played his last game in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Stokes, on the other hand, came back from ODI retirement for last year's WC and his 50-over future remains unclear since.

Recently, Stokes stated that he hasn't received a call from England head coach Brendon McCullum about his ODI future. Morgan feels both Root and Stokes should get a call-up for CT 2025.

"Ben Stokes has already said that he hasn't had the call yet from Baz as to whether he will play or not," Morgan said at the launch of the International Masters League in Mumbai on Tuesday. He further opined, "If that call comes, obviously he would love to play. In my eyes, they've got to come into a major world tournament and look to win it, and that means trying to find the best team - and for me, Stokes and Root are in that best team."

Morgan also lauded the Harry Brook-led England side for the fight shown in the recent home ODIs versus Australia, which they lost 3-2. He stated, "At the moment, I'm happy to back the younger players. In the recent series against Australia, they found a template. Australia, you have to commend how good they are at the moment in all formats of the game. But when you put them up against a side that, at stages, didn't have [Jofra] Archer, no Wood, Stokes and Root as well, no Buttler, that's half your England team."

"The run chase at Durham (England were chasing 305 in the third-ODI), when Harry Brook scored that magnificent hundred and then just went on to find his feet as captain and the template that they found in that game, I thought, is one that really suits the players that they've selected. I would encourage them to continue with that template and look ahead to the Champions Trophy," Morgan added.

At present, both Stokes and Root are part of England's Test squad for the ongoing three-match series versus Pakistan, in Pakistan.
