Ben Stokes stunned the cricketing fraternity with his sudden retirement from ODI cricket last month. At 31, Stokes remains one of the fittest cricketers in the modern-era and a vital cog for England across formats. Hence, his retirement from the 50-over format raised a lot of eyebrows as many questioned the relevance of the shorter format and slammed the rigorous international schedule.

Ahead of the launch of his documentary 'Ben Stokes: Phoenix from the Ashes', all-rounder Stokes opened up on his ODI retirement decision and came hard at the international scheduling by calling it 'ridiculous'. Speaking to the Mirror, the England Test captain said, "The schedule is so jam-packed. In my opinion it is just wrong that in the top level of sport you are looking so far ahead as to when you can stop. I know I can’t play all this cricket, it is a joke. The fact that series’ are overlapping is ridiculous. To have a Test series and one day series going on at the same time is just mind blowing to me."

“In the latest white ball series they had no time to train. That in itself is just wow. That should be an eye opener to people," he added.

Stokes made an interesting point that when top and elite cricketers are not playing regularly -- due to rest or personal reasons -- the game is not providing as much entertainment and enrichment to the followers of the game. Thus, he has called for the ones who are planning the schedules to have a hard look at the reality and revamp their approach. “That is where people putting these schedules together need to look at themselves and wonder ‘are we asking too much of the players to be doing this?’” he added.

'It is a joke' - Ben Stokes comes hard at rigorous international schedule after ODI retirement

The European Central Bank brought an end to the era of negative interest rates in the eurozone with a bigger than expected half-point hike to combat soaring inflation. Molly Gambhir tells you what it means for the Eurozone.

WION Fineprint | Eurozone raises interest rates for first time in 11 years

The European Central Bank has raised interest rates for the first time in 11 years by a larger-than-expected amount in an attempt to cool rampant inflation in the euro zone.

European Central Bank hikes interest rates for first time in 11 years by larger-than-expected amount

The European Central Bank (ECB) on Thursday (July 21) went for an aggressive benchmark deposit rate hike. This is a first since 2011 and has brought an end to the era of negative interest rates in the eurozone. The half point hike is bigger than expected. It has come amid soaring inflation and looming energy crisis in the wake of conflict in Ukraine.

The ECB said its new "assessment of inflation risks" justified taking "a larger first step on its policy rate normalisation path than signalled at its previous meeting" in June when policymakers shared their intent to raise rates by a more modest 25 basis points or a quarter of a percentage point.

In June, inflation in the eurozone hit 8.6 per cent. This was the highest ever level and it was well above ECB's target of two per cent.

The ECB also unveiled the first details of a new crisis tool to fight bond market stress in parts of the eurozone.

The instrument is a response to recent increases in the borrowing costs for governments in more highly indebted, usually southern eurozone members, such as Italy.

Dubbed the "Transmission Protection Instrument (TPI)", the targeted bond-buying scheme "can be activated to counter unwarranted, disorderly market dynamics that pose a serious threat to the transmission of monetary policy across the euro area," the ECB said in a statement.

The rate hike has lifted ECB's deposit facility from negative to zero.

The rate on its main refinancing operations climbs to 0.50 percent and on its marginal lending facility to 0.75 percent.

With prices taking off, the euro weak against the dollar and other central banks racing ahead with bigger hikes, the ECB was under pressure to think about making a bigger move at the meeting on Thursday.

Future rate hikes "will be appropriate", the ECB said, as it looks to catch up with the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England which both
started raising rates earlier and more aggressively.

ECB goes for aggressive rate hike for first time since 2011

On Monday (July 17), Ben Stokes left the cricketing fraternity shellshocked when he announced that he will step aside from ODI cricket post the England-South Africa three-match 50-over series opener in Durham on July 18 (Tuesday).

At 31, Stokes is one of the fittest athletes in world cricket. The all-rounder has already won an ODI World Cup medal, in 2019, has over 5,000 runs in Tests and was also part of Eoin Morgan-led England's 2016 T20 World Cup campaign, where Stokes' 19-run final over in the summit clash conceded the trophy to West Indies. The English star cricketer is easily one of the ambassadors of the game and an integral part of his national side across formats. Then, what led to the recently-appointed Test captain retiring from ODIs?

Stokes recently opened up on his ODI retirement and told BBC's Test Match Special, "The more cricket that is played, the better for the sport, but you want a product that is of the highest quality. You want the best players to be playing as much as you possibly can, all the time."

"It isn't just me or us, you see it all around the world now where teams are having to rest some players in a certain series so they feel like they are getting a break. We are not cars, you can't just fill us up and we'll go out there and be ready to be fuelled up again."

In his column for The Daily Mail, former England captain-turned-commentator Nasser Hussain also pointed out, "Every time he [Stokes] goes onto that field, he wants to be 100% committed, not 80% - and that is what makes him the player he is."

"Some might suggest 80% of Stokes is enough but the problem is that once you play at 80%, it can lead lead to a drop in performance in another format. Just look at what has happened to Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson, for example. He doesn't want to become stale. Or go through the motions. He couldn't do that," he mentioned.

"Yes, his decision was something of a shout to the administrators because at the age of 31 someone like him shouldn't have to retire from a certain format," added the former right-handed batsman.

Thus, Stokes' retirement leads to a burning question: is there too much cricket being played nowadays? Well, the answer to this is a straightforward YES. For the unversed, England have so far already played four Tests (three versus New Zealand, one against India), seven ODIs (three each versus Netherlands, India and one versus SA, with two more on cards) and three T20Is (with an equal number of them to follow suit versus the Proteas) in ongoing 2022 home summer.

The emergence of franchise cricket has surely been a huge boon for the game, tapping into new territories, seeing the emergence of new star players worldwide, and expanding the overall market. However, for any franchise cricket to be a hit, it needs a starry presence and, hence, many top players' participation is ultimately adding to their workload.

Even in the IPL, it is almost mandatory for the likes of Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, etc., to make their presence felt due to their huge demand. Thus, they end up picking and choosing games at the international level. With ICC's schedule also not helping one bit -- with too many bilaterals lined up along with a mega event each year till 2031 -- players need to take care of themselves and, hence, ask for frequent rests to remain fit and fresh, keep their passion and intensity for the game alive and kicking as well as deliver the goods.

With so much at stake in every level, it is the players who are being used as puppets -- being asked to move around and dance to the tunes of rigorous schedules across formats. Players are the tools by which the game expands. However, they are certainly not machines for churning out huge profits along with being also expected to perform in all formats at the international level.

Thus, it won't be surprising that Stokes might go onto be the first of many all-format players who will retire from a particular format to prolong their respective careers. The all-rounder has surprised only those who are oblivious to the extensively gruelling demands of the modern-day game. His decision isn't really a shocker. It might just be the start of an unwanted trend.

Beware world cricket! Ben Stokes might be first of many to give up a format to ensure longevity

Ben Stokes announced his retirement from ODI cricket on Monday (July 18), a day after India won the 50-over series versus hosts Jos Buttler-led England (also a day prior to English side's ongoing home ODIs versus South Africa).

Stokes retirement has led to many questioning the relevance of ODI cricket, especially since the surge of T20s. A lot of white-ball ICC events are lined-up each year, till 2031, along with the ICC Test Championship cycles as well. Hence, players are finding it tough to sustain themselves across formats and also be present for franchise cricket. Hence, Stokes walked away from the 50-over format, being part of England's memorable 2019 World Cup triumph. Recently, former English captain-turned-commentator Nasser Hussain opined that the all-rounder's decision came as he feared he will become 'stale' playing all forms of the game.

Hussain also pointed out Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson's current struggles, who are playing all formats at regular intervals and finding it tough as well. In his coloum for The Daily Mail, Hussain wrote, "Every time he [Stokes] goes onto that field, he wants to be 100% committed, not 80% - and that is what makes him the player he is."

For the unversed, both Williamson and Kohli are struggling for form at the moment. While Kohli's century-drought continues since late 2019, he also ended the England tour without a fifty. Williamson, on the other hand, scored only a solitary fifty in IPL 2022 and returned with not even a single half-century in the NZ's away Tests versus England.

India's tour of Australia in 2020/21 saw a huge controversy when Md Siraj complained of being racially abused by a group of fans in the third and penultimate Test at the SCG, Sydney. In the highly-competitive series between two top sides, the racism incident was a huge dent. In the ongoing India-England five-match Test series finale, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, another such racism incident got reported during the fourth and penultimate day's play on Monday (July 04).

Amid an intense and highly-competitive Test series decider between India and England, a section of English fans reportedly racially abused the Indian spectators at the stands. Many such fans took to social media to vent out their frustration and report the humiliating incident. In addition, they claimed that the stewards present at the venue asked them to sit down, allowing the abuse to go on.

Jos Buttler-led England announce squads for white-ball leg vs Team India

Stunning numbers of Eoin Morgan, England's white-ball legend

On Tuesday evening (June 28), Eoin Morgan confirmed his international retirement. The 35-year-old was struggling with form for the past one year and fitness concerns had even raised question marks on his avaliability for England ahead of the 2022 T20 World Cup. Thus, speculations were rife that the swashbuckling left-hander was set to call it quits soon before he himself confirmed all reports.

"To call time on what has been without doubt the most enjoyable and rewarding chapter of my career hasn't been an easy decision, but I believe now is the right time to do so, both for me, personally, and for both England white-ball sides I have led to this point," said Morgan in a statement issued by the England Cricket Board (ECB).

Thus, Morgan has left a huge void in England cricket as the Irish-born cricketer revamped England's white-ball sides and led them to their maiden ODI World Cup title in 2019. Playing under him for a long period, the Three Lions' all-rounder Moeen Ali shed light on the captaincy styles of Morgan and MS Dhoni, who is regarded as one of the best captains in international cricket. Moeen plays for Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL.

"I have played under him (Morgan). I have played under MS Dhoni as well. There is not much difference between both of them in terms of the characteristics - very calm, very loyal to their players. Brilliant captain, brilliant player,” Moeen said in a chat with Sports Today.

Moeen also credited Morgan's fearless and attacking mindset which has now been adopted by the English Test line-up, under new captain Ben Stokes. "We were horrendous in white ball cricket before that. He changed the mindset of the players. Actually, the way England are playing now in Test cricket, I believe, is actually because of him. He showed that if you have the mindset, you can play fearless cricket, which we are playing now,” added the all-rounder.

Morgan ended his illustrious career, playing for both Ireland and England, with 700 runs in Tests and 7,701 and 2,458 runs in ODIs and T20Is, respectively, including 16 tons overall.

Morgan changed England cricket after taking over as the limited-overs captain post Alastair Cook's tenure. Under him, England were eliminated in the group stage of the 2015 ODI World Cup, however, he revamped the side in style and led them to their maiden title in the 2019 edition, in England and Wales. England also ended as the semi-finalists in the 2017 Champions Trophy and last year's T20 World Cup in the UAE. The Three Lions also ended as runners-up in the 2016 T20 World Cup, in India; depicting their success under the Ireland-born cricketer.

Morgan achieved several laurels as a batter for England, ending as their leading run-getter in both ODIs and T20Is, however, his biggest contribution has been in inspiring the white-ball sides into playing a fearless and attacking form of cricket. The left-hander also led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL final during the 2021 edition.

England's ODI WC-winning skipper Eoin Morgan confirms international retirement Morgan changed England cricket after taking over as the limited-overs captain post Alastair Cook's tenure.

Thank you, Eoin Morgan! Cricket fraternity reacts as England's white-ball captain confirms int'l retirement

On Tuesday (June 28), Eoin Morgan has confirmed his international retirement. In the last 24 hours, there were speculations from all corners regarding Morgan's future and the England white-ball skipper now broke his silence and confirmed that he is stepping aside from international cricket.

Morgan has had a stellar career at the international level. The Irish-born swashbuckling left-hander started his career playing for Ireland before he made a switch and joined the England cricket team. Since then, his career graph has only gone up, especially since he was named the permanent limited-overs captain in 2015. Under Morgan, England revamped their playing style in coloured clothings. The Three Lions ended as the semi-finalists in the 2017 Champions Trophy and 2021 T20 World Cup, and missed out on winning the title in the 2016 T20 World Cup before lifting the trophy in the 2019 ODI World Cup. Thus, he became the first-ever England captain to lead the national side to the elusive ODI WC trophy.

Morgan amassed 700 runs in Tests and 7,701 and 2,458 runs in ODIs and T20Is, respectively. The left-hander has ended with a total of 16 centuries and his destructive approach with the bat has been hailed by many over the years.

The veteran has been struggling with form and fitness since the last year and, hence, his retirement was always on the cards. With him stepping aside, Jos Buttler is a favourite to take charge of the white-ball sides. He has served as Morgan's deputy for long.

The European Central Bank (ECB) on Monday (June 20) said that the arrival of Ukrainian refugees into the European Union could gradually solve labour shortage issues. ECB noted that some of those fleeing the war are likely looking to settle permanently.

Russia announced the invasion of Ukraine this year on February 24, with Moscow calling it special military operations. The Russia-Ukraine war led to the displacement of people on a very large scale.

According to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR), a total of 8.3 million refugees could have left Ukraine by the end of the year. More than 7.5 million have fled Ukraine and millions more have been displaced inside the country. Those who entered the neighbouring countries, hope to find durable employment opportunities in the 27-nation EU.

The situation is expected to benefit both, as the euro zone has been struggling with increasing labour shortages and on the other hand, those who entered Europe, are looking for work. The ECB said that the influx of refugees could "slightly ease" labour market tightness.

The ECB said in an Economic Bulletin article: "Under all of the assumptions detailed thus far, back-of-an-envelope calculations point to a median increase of between 0.2% and 0.8% in the euro area labour force in the medium term."

"This corresponds to an increase of between 0.3 and 1.3 million in the size of the euro area labour force as a result of the Ukrainian refugee crisis," it added.

The ECB further added that getting people to work may prove difficult due to administrative barriers. "Barriers to the labour market and other frictions remain significant impediments to refugees, making it difficult for them to integrate into host countries’ labour markets, especially in the short term," it said.

Yorkshire County Cricket Club and a number of individuals have been charged following an investigation into racism claims made by former player Azeem Rafiq, the England and Wales Cricket Board said on Wednesday, without naming the people in question.

Rafiq, a former England under-19 captain of Pakistani descent, last year alleged that he had been a victim of institutional racism at the club. The scandal shook English cricket to its core and led to numerous changes in coaching and administrative personnel at Yorkshire.

"The charges arise from alleged breaches of ECB Directive 3.3 (conduct which is improper or which may be prejudicial to the interests of cricket or which may bring the ECB, the game of cricket or any cricketer into disrepute) and the ECB Anti-Discrimination Code," the governing body said in a statement. "In matters of this nature, our normal practice is not to identify individuals charged at this stage. This decision is taken on a case-by-case basis."

An independent panel of the Cricket Discipline Commission, the body that handles disciplinary matters in the English domestic game, will hear the cases in due course. In April, Yorkshire chairman Kamlesh Patel said that the club had learnt its lessons and hoped to be a "beacon of hope" for diversity in English cricket.

England`s cricket team are in desperate need of a lift and new coach Brendon McCullum vowed on Friday to bring some enthusiasm into the camp as he starts his role ahead of the first test against New Zealand at Lord`s next week.

McCullum replaced Chris Silverwood who left the role in February after England were thrashed 4-0 in the Ashes in Australia. The 40-year-old, who scored 6,453 test runs for New Zealand in his playing career, only has coaching experience in the Indian Premier League but was confident he could kickstart a turnaround for a side who have managed one win in their last 17 tests.

"My job will be to try to take away some of the pressures initially, bring in some enthusiasm. Naturally, when there`s some change, guys kind of get a bit of a lift anyway, so hopefully that will translate to performances early as well," McCullum told a media roundtable at Lord`s. "But first I`ve got to have a look around and see where things sort of sit currently and try and identify some areas where we might need to make some changes at times too, but I`m very much looking forward to the challenge."

There has already been a change in hierarchy on the field as Ben Stokes takes over as captain, succeeding Joe Root, who led the side in a record 64 tests over five years but stepped down after the March 1-0 series defeat in West Indies. McCullum captained New Zealand in 31 tests and was part of the resurgence that led to them becoming a real force in the long game, eventually culminating in their winning the World Test Championship last year under his successor Kane Williamson.

With Stokes being such a talisman for England, McCullum said their relationship would be key in dragging the team up the test rankings from sixth. "I think the captain-coach relationship in cricket is vital. I think there needs to be a really tight bond there," he said.

"You don`t have to be the best of mates, but I think you have to have a real clear sort of vision of where you want the team to go and you both align with that, and then when you have that, then you can try and just fill the gaps. "It`s my job as a coach to fill the gaps for Stokes. I want him to be the most authentic person that he can be, lead the way that he wants to be. There`ll be times where I might have to pull him back and times where I might have to push him forward."

One problem has been how to blend youth with experience, with veteran fast bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad recalled to the side following their absence from the West Indies series. McCullum said he would sit down and chat to both about their future plans but that they would still be valuable assets on and off the field.

"We should enjoy the fact we`ve got 280 test matches sitting in our bowling unit and guys who have been there and done it before. It would be great if they were at the forefront of the next kind of development on the side," he said. Asked if he could lead England to being the number one test side in the world, McCullum pleaded for patience. "Yeah, definitely. That`s what we`re all aspiring to do. I think it`s going to take a bit of time and we should hopefully get a natural uplift and results straight away and New Zealand`s a good cricket team, but if we play properly, we`ll give ourselves a good chance," he said.

After New Zealand, England will host South Africa in another three match series in August-September and also play a one-off test against India in July.

Newly-appointed Test coach Brendon McCullum vows to inject positive energy into England team

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Wednesday announced that it has appointed Matthew Mott as England Men`s white-ball head coach. Mott, 48, has signed a four-year agreement and is expected to be in place for England`s three-match ODI series against The Netherlands in Amsterdam next month. The ECB`s selection panel of Chief Executive Officer Tom Harrison, Managing Director of England`s Men`s Cricket Rob Key, Strategic Adviser Andrew Strauss and Performance Director Mo Bobat unanimously agreed that he was the standout candidate for the role during the competitive interview process.

Mott has led the Australian Women`s Team since 2015 and during his seven years in charge has overseen one of the world`s best winning records across the international sport. Under his leadership, Australia Women have won consecutive ICC T20 World Cups, this year`s ICC Women`s 50-Over World Cup and are undefeated in four Ashes series. Mott has also helped Australia win 26 consecutive one-day internationals, a record in either the men`s or women`s game. Before taking up his post with Australia women in 2015, Mott worked as Head Coach of New South Wales - leading them to victory in the Champions League T20 tournament in 2009 - and then coached Glamorgan, reaching the final of the Yorkshire Bank 40 in 2013, before working as a consultant for Ireland during the 2015 ICC Men`s World Cup.

England Men`s White-Ball Head Coach, Matthew Mott in a statement said: "I am delighted to accept the opportunity to take this white-ball role with England. Whilst I am Australian, I have deep connections, and several of my closest friends are in the UK, having spent considerable time in Scotland, Wales and England, both as a player and coach."When this role became available, I was attracted by the chance to work with such an established and successful team under the astute leadership of Eoin Morgan and now Rob Key, whom I have always admired as an excellent cricket mind." Mott opined, "The idea of the split roles and the chance to work alongside Brendon McCullum in his red-ball role is an opportunity that I am incredibly enthusiastic about and certainly provides the right balance for my family as we embark on this exciting journey."

"It was always going to take something special to leave the role that I have loved for the past seven years with the Australian Women`s team. However, I genuinely believe that the time is right to play a role in helping the England Men`s ODI and T20 group continue to evolve as one of the best teams in the world. I am fully aware that this team has been functioning well and part of my initial plan is to work with the playing group and support staff on how we can firstly maintain, then enhance, the success they have started to build over the past few years." He further added, "Since the excitement of accepting this role, I, like many people around the world, have been trying to come to terms with the tragic loss of my great mate Andrew Symonds. The support of his beautiful family and close friends in the coming days will be vitally important, so I respectfully request some time to process his passing and the immense loss before making any further comment on the role at this stage."

ECB announces Matthew Mott as England men's white-ball head coach

England have announced a 13-member squad for the first two Tests of their upcoming ICC World Test Championship assignment at home against New Zealand, starting June 2.Y orkshire batter Harry Brook and Durham seamer Matthew Potts have been called up for the first time. Brook has been the standout batsman in Division one of the County Championship. The 23-year-old, who made his England T20 debut in January in the Caribbean, has scored 758 runs at an average of 151.60, including three centuries and four half-centuries for the white rose county during the summer campaign.

Twenty-three-year-old Potts has been in impressive form in the County Championship. On Thursday (May 12), the England Cricket Board (ECB) announced former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum as the head coach of England's Test team. Earlier, they were reports of former South African opener Gary Kirsten getting the top job, however, McCullum pipped Kirsten to bag the post.

For the unversed, McCullum has coached the likes of Trinbago Knight Riders and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, however, the England job will be his maiden full-fledged role as a national team coach. He has signed a four-year deal with the ECB and his tenure starts with England's home series versus New Zealand, i.e. the current World Test champions.

In his column for The Telegraph, the 2005-06 Ashes-winning England skipper Michael Vaughan reacted to McCullum's appointment. He wrote, "If English cricket has overlooked someone like Gary Kirsten for a second time, I do find it incredibly bizarre. I don't see how we have made that call twice. He is the perfect mentor, thinker, and cultural driver who has done it before and has the t-shirt. What England have gone for in Brendon is exciting and a big name, but it is a big risk as well."

"I am all for attacking play and being aggressive (a brand of cricket McCullum mostly relies upon), but I don’t think this England Test team is in a position to play that way at the moment. They have to take small steps first and get used to playing long, hard periods of Test cricket. And then in time, if you get a group of players with a lot of confidence, they can play more flamboyantly," he added.

It will be interesting to see how McCullum runs the England Test team, which is in a disarray after disastrous Ashes 2021-22 edition and a series defeat to hosts West Indies, in the Caribbean island. Michael Vaughan reacts as Brendon McCullum pips Gary Kirsten to be named England's Test coach

Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has been appointed head coach of England`s test team, the country`s cricket board (ECB) said on Thursday. McCullum replaced Chris Silverwood who left the role in February after England were thrashed 4-0 in the Ashes in Australia, with Paul Collingwood stepping in as a caretaker coach.

McCullum, 40, is currently in charge of Indian Premier League side Kolkata Knight Riders but the ECB said he will be in place to start his role when New Zealand visit for a three-test series starting at Lord`s on June 2. "We are delighted to confirm Brendon as England men`s test head coach. It has been a real privilege to get to know him and understand his views and vision for the game," ECB managing director Rob Key said in a statement.

"He has a recent history of changing cricket culture and environments for the better, and I believe he is the person to do that for England`s red-ball cricket. "We were incredibly fortunate to have a seriously strong list of quality candidates for the post, with Brendon demonstrating he was our number one choice."
Former South Africa and India head coach Gary Kirsten had been linked with the role and Collingwood was also considered.

McCullum played the last of his 101 tests at Christchurch in 2016 against Australia, where he hit the fastest ever century in the format (54 balls). He finished his career with 6,453 runs including 12 hundreds and 31 half-centuries.

He will be tasked with working alongside newly-appointed test captain Ben Stokes to get England out of a slump after the team won only one of their last 17 matches, with Key describing the pairing as a "formidable coach and captain partnership".

"In taking this role on, I am acutely aware of the significant challenges the team faces at present, and I strongly believe in my ability to help the team emerge as a stronger force once we`ve confronted them head-on," McCullum said.

The British government has supported a parliamentary committee's recommendation to limit public funding for cricket unless the sport can demonstrate continuous progress in getting rid of racism, it said on Thursday.

The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport parliamentary committee issued its report in January, saying cricket must clean up its act or face cuts in funding.

Former Yorkshire spinner Azeem Rafiq, who is of Pakistani descent, appeared before the committee in November to detail the "inhuman" treatment he suffered at county level and said the sport in England was institutionally racist.

"Public funding is already explicitly linked to the development and implementation of robust diversity and inclusion policies and plans - in cricket and beyond," the government said.

"The Government and Sport England has left the ECB (England & Wales Cricket Board) in no doubt on the need to make progress in this regard."

The committee had also called for quarterly reports and monitoring by indicators developed by the ECB, which the government has now endorsed.

"The Government will continue to call in the ECB quarterly and track their progress in tackling racism and increasing diversity, and will hold them to account for delivery against the joint 12-point action plan published in November 2021," it added.

"We expect to see evidence of improvements across the sport and delivery on the ECB's ambition to eradicate racism from cricket.

"However, if these changes are not made and implemented, the Government reserves the right to intervene further. This has been made clear to the ECB and the first-class counties."

An inconsistent India paid the price for a shoddy batting effort but England infused a new life into their title defence with a four-wicket win in a league-stage game of the ICC Women World Cup, here on Wednesday.

Inconsistency returned to haunt Indian batters as they were bundled out for a meagre 134 by England, who chased down the target in 31.2 overs to record their first win in the tournament after a hat-trick of defeats.

India got some runs on the board, thanks to previous game's centurion Smriti Mandhana, who top-scored for the side with a 35-run knock while wicketkeeper batter Richa Ghosh made 33.

With wickets falling intermittently, England bowled out India in 36.2 overs.
England also made a stuttering start to their chase as they lost both their openers -- Danni Wyatt (1) and Tammy Beaumont (1) -- cheaply with the scoreboard reading four for two in the third over.

Wyatt was first to depart in the second over, courtesy a sensational diving catch by Sneh Rana off medium-pacer Meghna Singh (3/26).

Veteran Jhulan Goswami, the highest wicket-taker in the history of the tournament, then trapped Beaumont in the second over after India went for the review. It was 250th wicket for the pacer in ODIs.

England skipper Heather Knight (53 not out) and Nat Sciver (45 off 46) then steadied England innings, playing cautiously to reach 34 for 2 in 10 overs.

While Knight played a captain's knock by anchoring the chase, Sciver took the attack to the Indian bowlers, hitting as many as eight boundaries during her entertaining knock, in which she pulled off some pull shots.

With just 135 required for a win, what England needed was a decent partnership after the early blows and Knight and Sciver provided that by sharing 65 runs for the third wicket.

Sciver's innings was cut short by Pooja Vastrakar. It was a soft dismissal and against the run of play as Sciver spooned a length ball to Goswami while looking to work the ball on the on-side.

Amy Jones (10) then stitched a 33-run stand for the next wicket with Knight before the former fell to a stunning backward running catch by India vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur at mid-on off Rajeshwari Gayakwad's bowling.

By then it was all over for India by then as England needed just 32 more runs.

The Indians picked up two more wickets in the 30th over before England completed the formality.

Meghna dismissed Sophia Dunkley (17) and Katherine Brunt (0) within a span of three balls in identical fashion -- caught behind by wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh.

Earlier, in sharp contrast to India's performance against the West Indies in their last match when they rode on centuries from Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur to post 317 for 8, their highest total in the history of the showpiece event.

Charlie Dean (4/23) was the pick of the bowlers for England while Anya Shrubsole also chipped in with two wickets as the Indians failed to build a decent partnership.

Having suffered three defeats from as many matches so far, it is a must-win match for title holders and four-time champions England.

The defeat failed to dislodge India from the top four as the Mithali Raj-led side is occupying the third spot in the eight-team standings with four points from two wins and as many losses.

England, on the other hand, opened their tally and are placed seventh with two points from four matches.

Some of the leading England Test cricketers, including pace bowler Mark Wood and middle-order batter Jonny Bairstow, are among the 22 players from the county to have registered for the 10-franchise IPL mega auction next month.

While the IPL schedule hasn`t been announced, it is likely to be held between March 27 and the last week of May, giving absolutely no time for the England Test cricketers to prepare for the home series against the Blackcaps.

If England cricketers play the full duration of the IPL, it would most likely make them unavailable for the Lord`s Test as they would have no preparation whatsoever in red-ball cricket before taking on the reigning World Test champions.

A report in Cricbuzz said on Friday that while "no formal communication" has yet been given to England`s players or the IPL teams about their availability, it is understood that "several franchises have been given an indication that they should plan to lose England players likely to be involved against the Blackcaps before the conclusion of the IPL."

Besides Bairstow and Wood, several other Test cricketers, including Dawid Malan, Ollie Pope, Craig Overton, Sam Billings and Dan Lawrence, could also be in the ECB`s scheme of things as they were part of the recently concluded Ashes in Australia. Jos Buttler, who was also Down Under for the five-Test series, has been retained by Rajasthan Royals. England Test skipper Joe Root, all-rounder Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes have ruled themselves out of IPL.

A clear picture will emerge after next month`s auction, depending upon how may England cricketer get picked. But in all likelihood, the ECB would like the players selected for the Tests to play at least one County Championship match (May 19 onwards) before the series against the Kiwis.

England Test players likely to miss later stages of IPL 2022 due to series against New Zealand

The England Cricket Board (ECB) had launched an investigation into the post-Ashes drinking session involving Australia and England players. Some of the England and Australia cricketers were seen enjoying drinks late till morning post the conclusion of the Ashes 2021-22 in Hobart. The police had to intervene as the celebrations were deemed 'too loud'.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media which shows England skipper Joe Root and pacer James Anderson enjoying drinks with Australia's Travis Head, Nathan Lyon, Alex Carey and others. The video has reportedly been taken by England's assistant coach Graham Thorpe and was released by the Sydney Morning Herald.

The players from both sides were reportedly drinking late till 6 am and had to be asked to go back to bed by the police officers, who intervened in the celebrations after another guest staying at the hotel complained about the noise. The players were enjoying their drinks and celebrating on the terrace of the fourth floor of the Crowne Plaza hotel in Hobart.

"Too loud. You have obviously been asked to pack up, so we've been asked to come. Time for bed. Thank you. They just want to pack up," a police officer can be heard saying in the video, asking the group to go back to their rooms. The players can be seen leaving immediately without creating a fuss.

However, the video has left the ECB in an embarrassing position with captain Root pictured drinking and celebrating with the Australian players after England's shambolic 4-0 loss in the Ashes. England lost the first three Tests in a row before drawing the fourth one to avoid a clean sweep.

They would have hoped to end the series with a consolation win having already conceded the prestigious Urn. However, Australia continued their dominant run in the series and won the final fifth Test by 156 runs to remain unbeaten in the series.

"During the early hours of Monday morning, members of the England and Australia men's teams shared a drink in the team areas of the hotel in Hobart," ECB said in a statement.

"The hotel management received a noise complaint by a hotel guest, and as is commonplace in Australia, the local police attended the scene.

"When asked to leave by hotel management and the Tasmanian police, the players and management in question left and returned to their respective hotel rooms. The England party have apologised for any inconvenience caused. The ECB will investigate further. Until such times, we will make no further comment," it added.

While there have been no wrongdoings reported on the part of the players, the video has surely come at the wrong time for the ECB in the wake of the team's 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Australia.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) released a 12-point action plan in November this year in order to tackle racism and discrimination in the sport. The move materialised after a number of players including former Yorkshire cricketer Azeem Rafiq came out in public with their respective accounts of facing institutional racism at their respective clubs.

Rafiq had first opened up on facing racism at Yorkshire during an interview in 2020 following which the club launched an investigation into his claims. Rafiq alleged he suffered constant abuse due to his Pakistani heritage and was taunted with words like "Paki" and "elephant washers" by some of his teammates and club staff.

"I felt isolated, humiliated at times," the former spinner had said during an emotional testimony in front of a British parliamentary committee after ECB suspended Yorkshire from hosting any major or international matches over their handling of Rafiq's case this year. The racism row rocked English cricket leading to high-profile departures at Yorkshire.

WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo caught up with the legendary Brian Lara on the sidelines of the Hero World Challenge golf tournament in Albany, Bahamas last week. Reacting to the racism scandal at Yorkshire, Lara said it was high time ECB took the matter seriously and improve things for the future.

Lara, who played for Warwickshire in English county for a number of years, said racism was not only limited to cricket in England and that it's an issue plaguing several other major sports in the country including football, where players are often on the receiving end of racist chants and behaviour.

"I have played a lot of cricket in England. Not just cricket, a lot of other sporting disciplines - football, everyone seems to have a problem with it (racism). With the Yorkshire situation, English cricket will have to look at it seriously," Lara told WION.

"Someone coming out and speaking about it honestly from the heart, I think it could only benefit English cricket. It might look like a bad situation now but you cut it and see if you can improve things in the future," added the West Indies great.

When probed, if he faced a similar episode or came across instances of racism during his stint in England, Lara refrained from going into the details and said these things never deterred his focus from the game. However, the former West Indies captain insisted racism is an issue that needs to be dealt with firmly.

"It's not something I want to comment on. I have finished playing cricket 14-15 years ago. On occasions, you have been to different countries and these things happen and I suppose you have got to be focused," said the West Indies great, who is regarded as one of the greatest batters of all time.

"I was very proud to be a West Indian and these matters didn't factor too much in my mind. But, it's presently a situation in England and worldwide sport and we have got to do something about it," he explained further.

In mid-September 2021, New Zealand cricket team pulled out of their tour of Pakistan at the last minute, just before the tour-opener, citing security concerns. The England Cricket Board (ECB) -- who was also next in-line and set to send their men and women's team to Pakistan -- also withdrew due to "bubble fatigue", which left the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) fuming.

However, the England cricket have made a strong move to amend their mistakes as the ECB boss Tom Harrison travelled to Pakistan to meet his PCB counterpart. Thus, he has assured that the England men's cricket team will tour Pakistan in September 2022, for seven T20Is (comprising two additional games), and return for a three-match Test series in the Asian country post next year's T20 World Cup (in Australia).

As a result of England's commitment, PCB chairman Ramiz Raja lauded the ECB and shared Pakistan cricket's forward plan. In a video shared by the PCB, Raja didn't just thank ECB for confirming the 2022 tour but also revealed that he is planning to introduce U-19 and Women's PSL along with giving the countrymen a full home season every year.

"I'm thankful to the England Cricket Board (ECB), as it wasn't easy for them. They were under pressure and we became emotional when the pullout took place. Everyone saw how Pakistan made its case, and the result is they came here. The only thing is we and the ECB must walk together because it's important for every board to understand each other, their frustrations, meet the expectations. I think the ECB also understood they committed a mistake by withdrawing, and it was a knee-jerk reaction," Raja said in the video.

"This tour was important, and it's their gratefulness. Coming over here to sort things out and accepting their fault and promising to play two additional T20Is is good news for our fans because I believe Pakistan should have a home season so spectators come and watch and top teams should tour."

Ramiz also hinted that NZ might also take a leaf from the ECB and reschedule their cancelled Pakistan tour for next year. "We are also revisiting New Zealand's tour, and when I go to Dubai, we might announce a schedule. However, England and Australia tours are massive breakthroughs, and I expect our side to perform well. I want us to be a proud nation and our fans, our team, and the board to be respected. Also, if we are firm and honest, we need not fear anybody," he said.

Lastly, he also made some big promises and revealed, "In October, hopefully we will launch something like a PSL for Under-19 level. We are very excited because this has not happened anywhere in the world. England will send their Under-19 players, we will look after them. We will create a new property. Going ahead, I will give you a home season."

Women's and U-19 PSL, full home season: Ramiz reveals forward plan as PAK look to revamp as hosts

Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC) have been suspended from hosting international or major matches over their handling of allegations of racism by former player Azeem Rafiq, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Thursday.

Rafiq, a player of Pakistani descent and a former captain of the England Under-19s, said last year he was made to feel like an outsider at Yorkshire and contemplated taking his own life.

"It is clear ... that YCCC`s handling of the issues raised by Azeem Rafiq is wholly unacceptable and is causing serious damage to the reputation of the game," the ECB said in a statement.

"The ECB find this matter abhorrent and against the spirit of cricket and its values."

Yorkshire batsman Gary Ballance, who said on Wednesday that he had used racist language towards his former teammate Rafiq, has also been indefinitely suspended from England selection.

"Before any regulatory investigation is complete, the Board wishes to take immediate action in relation to Gary Ballance," the ECB said.

"While Mr Ballance has not been selected to play for England since 2017, he will be suspended indefinitely from selection. This position will be reviewed following the ECB regulatory investigation into his conduct."

The ECB said it would hold Yorkshire to account over their handling of the matter and consider sanctions including but not limited to financial and future match allocations at the end of its investigation.

"In the meantime, YCCC are suspended from hosting international or major matches until it has clearly demonstrated that it can meet the standards expected of an international venue, ECB member and First Class County," the ECB said.

Reuters has contacted the club, whose Headingley stadium is used regularly for England`s test and limited overs matches, for comment.

Several sponsors have ended their partnerships with Yorkshire following an independent report into allegations of racism made by Rafiq, with Nike saying on Thursday that it has cancelled a four-year deal that was signed in March.

"Nike will no longer be the kit supplier for Yorkshire CCC. We stand firmly against racism and discrimination of any kind," Nike said in a statement reported by British media.

Emerald Group Publishing, Yorkshire Tea and Tetley Bitter, among others sponsors, have also said they will end their relationships with the club.

Yorkshire said last month that they would not take action nL1N2RO1Q9 against employees, players or executives following the report, which found Rafiq had been a victim of racial harassment and bullying in his first spell at the county from 2008-14.

The 30-year-old Rafiq and senior Yorkshire executives have been called to give evidence before a parliamentary Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) panel on Nov. 16.

DCMS Committee Chair Julian Knight said in a statement on Thursday that the punishment meted out by the ECB was overdue.

"The ECB’s action in taking international cricket away from Yorkshire should act as a short, sharp shock to bring the club to its senses.

"Like the rest of us, I imagine the members of Yorkshire County Cricket Club will be questioning why the board is still in place."

Former Yorkshire and England captain Michael Vaughan has revealed that he was named in the YCCC report but "totally denies any allegation of racism".

Vaughan said he was alleged to have told Rafiq and two other Asian players as they walked onto the field together that there were "too many of you lot, we need to do something about it".

He denies making the comment.

"It is clear that Azeem has endured a lot," Vaughan wrote in a column for The Daily Telegraph. "It is not only right but essential that his experiences and his perspective are heard. There are unquestionably lessons to be learned.

"Yorkshire have dealt with this terribly. It is a good cricket club and ... I hope I can be part of the movement to rebrand the club and people will eventually look back on this time and say it changed for the better."

Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC) have been suspended from hosting international or major matches over their handling of allegations of racism by former player Azeem Rafiq, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Thursday.

"The ECB find this matter abhorrent and against the spirit of cricket and its values." Yorkshire batsman Gary Ballance, who said on Wednesday that he had used racist language towards his former teammate Rafiq, has also been indefinitely suspended from England selection.
