Star English players Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, and others could miss the Playoffs of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season after the England Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the schedule for both the men’s and women’s cricket team on Tuesday, July 4. The defending T20 World Champions could enter the decisive period of their title defence as they will play Pakistan in the last week of May. On the other hand, Australia will be in England yet again when they visit for a limited-overs series in September 2024.

<h2>ECB confirms schedule for 2024</h2>

As things stand, nothing is clear on the IPL 2024 schedule but the playoffs will likely take place in the final week of May which could see a host of English players in limbo for their participation. England will play a three-match T20I series against Pakistan starting on May 22 with players like Buttler, Stokes, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, and Jofra Archer away on IPL duties before the start of the series. As things stand, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have Stokes and Ali on their books while Rajasthan Royals (RR) have Buttler in their ranks.

The ECB also put in significant efforts for the women’s schedule as they attracted a big crowd for this summer’s Ashes. The board earned good revenue from the ticket sale and will look for a similar output next summer. The women’s team, like the men’s team, will start their campaign against Pakistan with the first T20I on May 11.

"Next summer's schedule will see England Women play at more venues and allow more people to see their heroes in action as we look to maintain the growth the women's game deserves.

"Fans across England and Wales will also get to see our England Men's world champions in action ahead of their T20 World Cup title defence, before three-match Test series against both West Indies and Sri Lanka,” Richard Gould, the ECB's chief executive officer, said in a statement.

The schedule for 2024 includes two Test matches at Lord’s while there will be red-ball cricket at Trent Bridge, Edgbaston, Old Trafford, and the Oval. Cardiff will play host to limited-overs matches against Pakistan and Australia.

Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler likely to miss IPL 2024 Playoffs after ECB confirms international schedule

England won the toss and opted to bowl first on Day 1 of the second Ashes Test, at Lord's, on Wednesday (June 28), in overcast conditions on a track favourable for bowling. However, they ended the day picking five wickets as Australia managed 339 runs&nbsp;courtesy of fifties from David Warner, Travis Head and Steve Smith (85 not out). After the end of the opening day, former England captain Michael Vaughan expressed concern for Ben Stokes &amp; Co. as hosts trail the five-match series 1-0 after losing the series opener, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, by two wickets.

"England can get back into it but I worry about it. They are going to have to be sharper in the field, I will be intrigued to see how they cope," Vaughan said on BBC's Test Match Special.

"I do think this pitch will get harder over the next few days. I worry about England. It's very tough at this stage. They switched off at Edgbaston and today, they haven't been switched on at the key moments," Vaughan further added.&nbsp;

England were sloppy on the field as they dropped chances and Australia made them pay heavily with attacking knocks from Warner (66 off 88), Head (77 off 73) whereas Smith remains unbeaten on 85 and looks set for a daddy hundred. Debutant Josh Tongue (2 for 88) looked good whereas Joe Root picked two wickets in an over towards the end of Day 1 otherwise Australia had been in a more commanding position at the time of stumps.&nbsp;

England will be desperate to dismiss the Australian line-up for less than 400 but it looks an improbable task at the moment. For Australia, they will target anything over 450 with Smith well settled in the middle.

'I worry about England, they need to be...': Vaughan warns Ben Stokes & Co. after Day 1 of Lord's Test

England and Australia produced a memorable match when both sides locked horns in the recently-concluded first Test of Ashes 2023 at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Despite being aggressive and proactive from the word go, Ben Stokes-Brendon McCullum-led England lost by two wickets and&nbsp;conceded a 1-0 lead to Australia.

The defeat was England's third in the Bazball-era since McCullum took over as the Test coach. Ahead of the second Test, at Lord's, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting dropped a bombshell. Punter revealed in a recent interaction that he was offered England's Test coach job before McCullum.

<h2>'I'm not ready for a full-time coaching job'</h2>

Ponting told Guerilla Cricket, "I actually got asked before Brendon took the job."

"I did take some calls from Robert Key as soon as he took over that job. But I'm just not ready for a full-time international coaching job, where I'm at in my life. Having traveled as much as I have, with young kids now I just don't want to be away as much as I was."

"And even talking to Brendon, his family is only just arriving today. When you've got kids that are in school, moving them around, that's not what I want to do," he added.

It would have been very interesting had Ponting agreed to coach Australia's arch-rival team in world cricket. At present, England are doing pretty well in the red-ball format ever since McCullum took over&nbsp;last year. They have beaten teams like India and South Africa at home, whitewashed Pakistan in Pakistan, drew a two-match series versus hosts New Zealand early this year and now have a litmus test in the remainder of&nbsp;Ashes 2023.

England will certainly look to back their attacking style of play and aim to&nbsp;level the series in the second Test at Lord's, starting next week.

I got asked before McCullum: Ricky Ponting's sensational claim, says he was offered England Test coach job

England and Australia produced a humdinger of a Test in Edgbaston, Birmingham before Pat Cummins &amp; Co. edged past the hosts by two wickets on the final day, on Tuesday (June 20), of the Ashes 2023 opener. Opting to bat first, England rode on Joe Root's unbeaten 118 to declare their first innings at 393 for 8. In reply, Australia posted 386 all-out courtesy of Usman Khawaja's 141 before England set up a challenging 282-run target. The final day's play saw a delayed start before the game went down to the wire but Khawaja (65), Cummins (44 not out) and Nathan Lyon (16 not out) took the Aussies home.

While England's Bazball approach entertained one and all throughout the contest and kept viewers at the edge of their seat, English captain Ben Stokes' first-innings declaration became a talking point after they went down by two wickets on Tuesday evening.

<h2>'Not going to be looking back on this game as 'what ifs'</h2>

Stokes backed his declaration call decision on the opening day, made when a well-set Root was batting on 118 along with two wickets in hand. He said after the game, "If we were in the same position? Yeah. I would like to be 398 for 6 [sic] with 20 minutes left. That would be great."

<section itemprop="articleBody">
"I could also turn it around and say, 'if we didn't declare, would we have got the excitement that we did at the end of day five?' I'm not a hundred per cent sure, but I'm not going to be looking back on this game as 'what ifs'... the reality is, we just didn't manage to get over the line," Stokes further added.

Despite England's early declaration on Day 1, they kept resorting to their exciting and aggressive style of cricket and were on top in most parts of the game. However, Cummins-led Australia never looked out of sorts and kept coming back before pulling off a heist in the final hour courtesy of an unbroken 55-run ninth-wicket stand between skipper Cummins and Lyon.

While one can point fingers at England's declaration, they did miss a chance to not dismiss Australia early in their first essay after reducing them to 220 for 5. Also, England should have ideally set a target beyond 300 but Cummins &amp; Co. did well to dismiss them for 273.

The second Test commences on June 28 (Wednesday) at the iconic Lord's Cricket Stadium, London.

'Not going to...': Ben Stokes backs declaration call after England lose Edgbaston Test to Australia

The European Central Bank has hiked the lending rates to the highest levels in the last 22 years. The ECB has increased its lending rate for the eighth consecutive time, this time by 0.25% to a 22 year-high of 3.5%. The hike comes even as the eurozone continues to struggle with high inflation and a contracting economy.

ECB hikes lending rates to a 22-year high

Inflation in the Eurozone has decelerated to its slowest pace since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;The initial estimate from the European Union's statistics agency cited by CNN reveals that consumer prices in the euro area rose by 6.1 percent last month compared to the previous year, marking a significant drop from April's 7 percent surge.&nbsp;

Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, the major economies within the Eurozone, have all witnessed a sharp decline in inflation.&nbsp;

The easing of inflationary pressures can be attributed to various factors.&nbsp;Food prices moderated for the&nbsp;second consecutive month in May. Energy prices, however, declined during the same period. Moreover, core inflation, which excludes food and energy, hit a four-month low of 5.3 percent. These developments indicate a gradual cooling down of the previously heated price trends.

The downward trend in inflation&nbsp;has also ignited discussions about the need for the European Central Bank (ECB) to reconsider its course of action. But ECB President Christine Lagarde was quoted by CNN as saying that there is still work to be done before interest rates can be considered sufficiently restrictive.

Mixed Signals and Economic Indicators

While May's inflation data encourages some policymakers to advocate for an end to the ECB's tightening cycle, others remain cautious due to persistent services inflation and the tight labour market.&nbsp;

The Eurozone's unemployment rate dipped to 6.5 percent in April, demonstrating a robust economy. However, separate data revealed that lending by banks in the Eurozone stagnated in April, with loans to households barely showing any growth. These mixed signals make it challenging for the ECB to determine the most appropriate monetary policy approach.

If the gradual easing of core inflation continues, analysts cited by CNN predict that the ECB will settle for two more interest rate hikes, eventually reaching a peak deposit rate of 3.75 percent.&nbsp;

This will depend on various factors, including economic indicators, lending patterns, and the evolution of inflationary pressures.&nbsp;However, economists caution that the stagnant lending in the Eurozone provides further evidence that the ECB's tightening policy is effective, giving proponents of a rate hike halt a stronger argument.

Eurozone's inflation tumbles, fuels rate cut debate in European Central Bank

On Thursday (May 25), speculations were rife that England's swashbuckling opener Jason Roy is set to quit his national contract and represent the Los Angeles Knight Riders, Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) sister franchise in the upcoming inaugural&nbsp;Major Cricket League. However, Roy&nbsp;broke&nbsp;his silence on the reports and&nbsp;stated&nbsp;that 'England cricket remains his priority' in an ODI World Cup year despite his inclination to play in MLC.

Roy took to his Twitter handle to share the statement. He said, "Following a bit of unwanted speculation over the last 24 hours, I wanted to clarify that I am not and never will ‘walk away from England’. Representing my country continues to be my proudest moment as a professional cricketer. I hope to play for England for many more years, that remains my priority."

<h2>'My priority is England cricket with world cup upon us'</h2>

Roy added, "I've had clear and supportive conversations with the ECB about participating in Major league Cricket. The ECB were happy with me to play in the competition as long as they didn't have to pay me for the remainder of the contractual year.”

"As a single format player with no central contract, I wanted to take the opportunity to play this competition as there are currently no scheduling conflicts with England. It benefits me as an England player to play as much competitive cricket possible.

Jason Roy breaks silence on 'unwanted speculation' about cancelling ECB contract to play in MLC 2023

England's 2019 ODI World Cup winner Jason Roy is considering negotiating a release&nbsp;from his England Cricket Board (ECB) contract. The swashbuckling right-hander is looking to&nbsp;take up a lucrative offer&nbsp;to play in the inaugural season of Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States, most likely for Los Angeles Knight Riders.

As per a report in ESPNcricinfo,&nbsp;Roy is planning to cancel his contract in order to play in the league. Not only Roy but English pacer Reece Topley is also mulling&nbsp;a move. However, his final decision will depend on his injury. It is to be noted that Topley was part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) camp in IPL 2023 but bowed out with a shoulder injury after their tournament opener.

England's Jason Roy to cancel national contract to play in MLC for a WHOPPING amount: Report

Former England captain Michael Vaughan will return to the BBC's cricket coverage after being cleared of making a racist remark earlier this year.&nbsp; Vaughan had been accused of using racist or discriminatory language towards a group of players of Asian ethnicity before a match for Yorkshire in 2009. But a Cricket Discipline Commission panel held in March found that charge was not proven.

<h2>BBC confirms&nbsp;Vaughan's return</h2>

The BBC confirmed on Friday that Vaughan would be a guest on the broadcaster's 'Today at the Test' highlights programme, initially for England's match against Ireland at Lord's from June 1. Vaughan will also be a summariser on the Test Match Special radio programme throughout the season, with England hosting Australia in five Ashes Tests.

Vaughan, England's 2005 Ashes-winning skipper, was cleared of an allegation that he had referred to a group of four Yorkshire players of Asian ethnicity, including Azeem Rafiq, as "you lot" before a T20 match against Nottinghamshire.

Michael Vaughan set for BBC return after being cleared over racism claim

Early this month, Mumbai Indians (MI) were dealt with a major blow as speedster Jofra Archer got ruled out of the IPL 2023 edition. Archer featured in only five games for the Rohit Sharma-led franchise and accounted for a mere&nbsp;two wickets at an economy rate of 9.50. With the recurrence of stress fracture in his right elbow, he is now also out of the upcoming English summer, to miss Ashes 2023.

A lot was expected from Archer in the MI jersey. Having returned to international cricket, early this year, after almost 24 months, the 28-year-old never looked in his elements in IPL 2023, not bowling quick and looking threatening with the ball. After his return home, as the England Cricket Board (ECB) is monitoring his recovery, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has slammed Archer left, right and centre.

<h2>'MI&nbsp;paid big money for him and what has he given in return?'</h2>

Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day, "What has been Mumbai Indians experience of Jofra Archer? They took a punt on him knowing that he was injured and would be available only from this season. They paid big money for him and what has he given in return? He didn't seem 100 per cent fit and he should have informed the franchise about it. They only realised when he turned up and found that he was barely able to bowl at his usual pace. "

He further opined, "In between the tournament, he went abroad for treatment which is what his country's cricket board apparently said. So he was never fully fit, but still came over. If he was committed to the franchise, who probably pay him more than the ECB does, he should have stayed right till the end even if he wasn't going to play and show his commitment towards the franchise. Instead, he has opted to fly off back to the UK."

<h2>'This has got to be the greatest diversionary trick attempted'</h2>

<h2>&nbsp;</h2>

Gavaskar added, "A day later, a story appears that he is going to get a multi-million-pound deal with Mumbai Indians to play for their team in the various leagues in the world. This has got to be the greatest diversionary trick attempted. Mumbai Indians are not fools to sign a lame horse for any future race. Make no mistake, Mumbai Indians won't be amused at the turn of events and now that they have come back well in the tournament without his presence, he will be lucky if he gets his full fee for the IPL and if he does then he would do well to give half to his favourite charity."

"There's simply no point paying even one rupee for a player, however big a name he may be, if he is not going to be available for the entire tournament. It's got to be the player's choice to pick playing for an IPL franchise or his country. Full marks to him if he chooses country over IPL, but if he chooses IPL then he has to fulfil his commitments totally and not make some excuse and leave early, especially towards the time when qualifying for the Playoffs becomes crucial."

Archer's career has been marred with injury concerns. After being a part of England's maiden ODI World Cup campaign, in 2019, his graph has only gone down.&nbsp;In 2021, a stress fracture to his right elbow halted his progress whereas it was followed by&nbsp;a stress fracture of the back in the following year. Now, Archer is running against time to fully recover and stage a comeback in the English line-up for their ODI WC defence, later this year in India.&nbsp;

Ashes 2023: Jofra Archer ruled out of entire English summer with recurrence of stress fracture

From ECB to Goldman Sachs, the world of finance is finally embracing diversity and breaking free from the old boys' club. The European Central Bank has pledged to promote gender diversity in the finance industry.

ECB says there is gender bias in banking

Two senior members of the European Central Bank (ECB) have&nbsp;taken a stand against the banking &amp; finance industry's failure to promote gender diversity in its upper ranks.

Frank Elderson, an ECB Executive Board member and Elizabeth McCaul, an ECB's Supervisory Board member, have expressed their disappointment with the current state of affairs in a blog post on Tuesday, as per a Bloomberg report.

While acknowledging that&nbsp;some progress has been made in promoting gender diversity, they believed that targets set by banks have remained insufficient.&nbsp;Describing banking as "still a man's world", Elderson and McCaul have called for more ambitious but credible gender diversity targets.&nbsp;

The ECB has integrated gender diversity into its guide for fit and proper assessments since 2021, ensuring that the right senior managers assume leadership roles within banks. However, of the 361 chief executives named at significant institutions and their subsidiaries between 2020 and 2022, over 300 were men.

While the average diversity targets for management bodies rose from 32 percent in 2020 to 34 percent by the end of last year, the ECB has revealed&nbsp;that approximately one-third of significant institutions did not meet their own targets. This lack of progress has led Elderson and McCaul to doubt the achievability of these targets in the near future.

Moreover, the ECB duo has&nbsp;emphasised&nbsp;the need for countries to adopt the&nbsp;European Union's forthcoming Women on Boards Directive. According to this directive, boards will only be considered balanced when at least 40 percent&nbsp;of the members are female.&nbsp;

Elderson and McCaul have also affirmed their commitment to utilising the existing supervisory tools available within national legislation to insist on improvements and address any internal governance shortcomings related to gender diversity within banks.

In a related study, the&nbsp;International Monetary Fund (IMF) has criticised central banks, including the ECB, for their inadequate progress in achieving gender diversity. According to the IMF survey, central banks, on average, filled less than half of their positions with women. Furthermore, the study revealed that the hired women were often relegated to lower-paid administrative roles or human relations.

Goldman Sachs settles gender discrimination&nbsp;suit&nbsp;

In a groundbreaking move, Goldman Sachs&nbsp;has agreed to pay a staggering $215 million to resolve a long-standing class-action lawsuit accusing the Wall Street powerhouse of systematic underpayment of women.

Reuters reported that the New York-based bank has settled the matter with lawyers, who represent&nbsp;approximately 2,800 female associates and vice presidents, marking a significant step towards addressing gender inequality in the financial sector.

The imminent trial, scheduled to commence in June in New York, would have offered a rare public platform for examining the pervasive issue of inequality within the industry. It is worth noting that, except for one, all of the six largest US&nbsp;banks have historically been led by men. Recognising the potential impact of this high-profile trial, the two parties hurriedly worked to settle before the proceedings began.

Notably, the settlement amount exceeds the sum paid by Smith Barney several decades ago to resolve the infamous "Boom-Boom Room" suit, which had accused the firm of harassment and discrimination.

Banking's gender gap exposed: ECB and IMF call for diversity revolution

England cricket chiefs on Wednesday recommended fines totalling £37,000 ($46,000) for players charged in connection with the explosive Yorkshire racism scandal.

Pakistan-born bowler Azeem Rafiq, 32, went public with allegations of racism and bullying in September 2020, related to his two spells at the county.

A Cricket Discipline Commission panel in March upheld charges against five former Yorkshire players relating to the case, including retired England Test stars Tim Bresnan and Matthew Hoggard. Ex-England international Gary Ballance, who subsequently played for his native Zimbabwe, had admitted using racist language prior to the hearing in London.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan was the only one of the seven players initially charged to appear at the hearing, and was cleared of using racist language "on the balance of probabilities".

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said Ballance, who retired from cricket last month, should be fined £8,000 and requested an eight-week suspension.

The ECB took into account the fact the 33-year-old had admitted the charge, and apologised, as it gave its recommendations to the panel.

"We understand there has been a significant impact on Mr Ballance's mental health, and that in April 2023, Mr Ballance announced his retirement from professional cricket," said ECB lawyer Jane Mulcahy. "So, the ECB therefore suggests there be a reprimand, and Mr Ballance be fined £8,000, reduced from £12,500 to take in effect of his admissions."

The ECB also recommended the former Test batter attend a racism and discrimination course.

Ballance's lawyer, Craig Harris, argued the financial penalty should be reduced due to the cost of being involved in the proceedings -- he lost his job as a player at Yorkshire, lost a sponsorship contract, and was not considered for England selection.

- Dressing room culture -

Harris also pointed to the established culture in the Yorkshire dressing room, including widespread use of a racial slur, and said Zimbabwe-born Ballance was himself the subject of discriminatory remarks.

He said: "This is not a case where Mr Ballance says the words were not discriminatory, or that he has some sort of intellectual deficit. It is accepted he ought to have known better.

"But they (rules) were breached by someone living and playing within a culture in which the use of such language had become normalised."

The ECB recommended a range of punishments for the five other players facing charges, including fines and suspensions.

Yorkshire have admitted to four charges including a "failure to address systemic use of racist and/or discriminatory language over a prolonged period". The sanctions against the club are expected to be announced next month.

CDC chairman Tim O'Gorman said it would take several weeks before the full decisions were made.

Former Scotland international John Blain, one of the players charged, described the outcome of proceedings against him as a "depressingly predictable and wholly unjust decision" as he launched a GoFundMe page in a bid to clear his name through legal action.

"Despite being entirely innocent of these allegations, I was advised by my lawyers to withdraw from the inadequate ECB process, due to its many fundamental flaws," he said in a statement. "The evidence given was one-sided, partial and in some areas, simply untrue -- I have never used such language."

Andrew Strauss is to leave his position as strategic adviser to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after his suggested reforms to the domestic calendar failed to gain the backing of English counties. The former England captain was commissioned to conduct a high-performance review following the team's 2021/22 Ashes rout in Australia.

His report made 17 recommendations, notably reducing the overall number of first-class and T20 Blast matches in an English season. But his proposals sparked a backlash among county loyalists, angered at what they deemed another attempt to blame the domestic game for the national side's latest failure in Australia.

And with most of England's 18 first-class counties member-owned clubs, Strauss's plan failed to gain sufficient support, with the existing schedule remaining in place.

The case for a major shake-up of the county structure was also weakened as an England side that had own just one of its last 17 Tests under former captain Joe Root, went on to triumph in 10 of their next 12 under new skipper Ben Stokes and red-ball coach Brendon McCullum.

There was an administrative shake-up too, with Richard Gould succeeding Tom Harrison as ECB chief executive and Richard Thompson taking over as chairman.

Strauss, previously the ECB's director of men's cricket, had regarded his proposals as all of a piece and the 46-year-old has signalled his intention to stand down at next month's annual general meeting.

He has several commitments away from cricket, notably at the Ruth Strauss Foundation, a lung cancer charity he established in honour of his late wife.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I've really enjoyed my time at the ECB and am proud of having contributed to a successful period for our England teams," said the former Ashes-winning skipper in a board statement. "With increasing commitments outside of the organisation, sadly I've decided it's time to step away from my current role. I wish the new board all the very best as it continues in its mission to grow our game."

Thompson, paying tribute to the 46-year-old ex-opener contribution, said: "Andrew has given outstanding service to English cricket over many years in a number of different roles.

"I've greatly valued the advice and expertise he has provided in my time as chair, and have enjoyed working with him.

"We are currently implementing the vast majority of recommendations from his impressive high-performance review, which I believe will help our England men's teams to sustain their success."

Given that the Congress has a deadline to handle the country's debt, the head of the European Central Bank stated that she did not think the United States would default on its debt this time.

ECB Chief: US debt default just not possible

European Central Bank supervisors met to tackle growing cracks in the banking system on Friday after a $30 billion lifeline for U.S. lender First Republic Bank eased fears of its imminent collapse.

Large U.S. banks on Thursday swooped in to rescue the San Francisco-based bank, which was caught up in a widening shock triggered by the collapse of two other mid-size U.S. lenders.

The rescue package came less than a day after Credit Suisse clinched an emergency central bank loan of up to $54 billion to shore up its liquidity. Shares in Switzerland’s second-largest bank were lower in Friday morning trading.

The two deals helped restore some calm to global markets, after a torrid week for banking stocks.

“The Supervisory Board is meeting to exchange views and to provide members with an update on recent developments in the banking sector,” an ECB spokesperson told Reuters.

The ECB, which on Thursday raised interest rates by 50 basis points, held another ad hoc supervisory board meeting earlier this week in an unusual move ahead of a scheduled gathering next week.

“French and European banks are very solid,” ECB policymaker and French central bank governor Francois Villeroy de Galhau, told BFM business radio.

Analysts says authorities appear eager to quickly deal with systemic risks, but worry the potential for a full-blown banking crisis is far from over.

Data on Thursday showed banks in the United States sought record amounts of emergency liquidity from the Fed in recent days, driving up the size of the central bank’s balance sheet after months of contraction.

The First Republic deal was put together by top power brokers including U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell and JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, who had discussed the package this week, a source familiar with the situation said.

“They will keep the money in First Republic to keep it alive for self interest … to stop the run on banks. Then they will take it away gradually and the bank will play out a slow death,” Mathan Somasundaram, founder at research firm Deep Data Analytics in Sydney, said on Friday.

But while First Republic’s stock closed up 10% on news of the rescue, its shares fell 17% in after-market trading after the bank said it would suspend its dividend and disclosed its cash position and just how much emergency liquidity it needed.

Some of the biggest U.S. banking names including JP Morgan Chase &amp; Co, Citigroup Inc, Bank of America Corp, Wells Fargo &amp; Co, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley were involved in the rescue, according to a statement from the banks.

While the support has prevented an imminent collapse, investors were startled by late disclosures about First Republic’s cash position, even after the injection, and just how much it and others leaned on the Fed this month for support.

“People are concerned that the contagion risk is real, and that rattles confidence,” said Karen Jorritsma, head of Australian equities, RBC Capital Markets.

“I don’t think we are in the crux of a global financial crisis. Balance sheets are much better than they were in 2008, banks are better regulated,” she added.

Credit Suisse became the first major global bank to take up an emergency lifeline since the 2008 financial crisis amid doubts over whether central banks will be able to sustain aggressive rate hikes to rein in inflation.

Lessons from 2008

For now, authorities are confident the banking system is resilient and have tried to emphasise that the current turmoil is different to the global financial crisis 15 years ago as banks are better capitalised and funds more easily available.

The ECB pressed forward with its rate hike, arguing that euro zone banks were in good shape and that if anything, the move to higher rates should bolster their margins.

Focus now swings to the Fed’s policy decision next week and whether it will stick with its aggressive interest rate hikes as it seeks to get inflation under control.

In Asia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand said they were monitoring financial markets but were confident their local banks were well capitalised and able to withstand major shocks.

While capital remains adequate, analysts say a A$300 billion ($201 billion) refinancing task for Australia’s biggest banks is about to get harder, as appetite for new debt shrinks.

Japan’s finance ministry, financial regulator and central bank said they would meet on Friday to discuss developments.

Banking stocks globally have been battered since Silicon Valley Bank collapsed last week due to bond-related losses that piled up when interest rates surged last year, raising questions about what else might be lurking in the wider banking system.

European banks have lost around $165 billion in market value since March 8, Refinitiv data shows.

European Central Bank meets over banking stress as US rescue eases immediate fears

Policymakers at the European Central Bank (ECB) announced Thursday that they would go through with a planned 0.5% interest rate hike as the institution juggles both inflation and financial uncertainty amid turmoil that has gripped financial markets after the recent collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) in the U.S.

The Credit Suisse turmoil resulted in torrid sessions in Europe and the United States overnight. The European Central Bank raised its three policy rates by 50 basis points in its sixth consecutive rate hike and said future moves will depend on incoming data.

Punjab Kings are eagerly waiting for medical clearance from the ECB on Jonny Bairstow as the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is about to begin in almost three-week time. Bairstow is now recovering from the freak injury he suffered last year while playing golf with his friends in Yorkshire.

The English batter broke his left leg and dislocated his ankle on September 2nd, days before the start of the final Test between England and South Africa. Jonny was believed to have slipped while playing golf and had multiple fractures in his fibula in addition to suffering ligament damage.&nbsp;

It came as a huge blow not only for England, but also for several franchises across different leagues where he was supposed to represent them including the Punjab Kings in the IPL. Earlier, going by the timeline set by the ECB for Bairstow, he was to get fit by this time but looking at the pace at which he is progressing it doesn’t look any clear if he would be available for the whole season or not.

As per a report in the ESPNcricinfo, Punjab Kings are in constant touch with Bairstow and the ECB, keeping a regular tab on his recovery rate. As they await the final medical clearance from the England’s Cricket Board, Kings have started listing out Jonny’s possible replacements if the worst happens. Though they are yet to pen down a final name.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, since September last year, the right-handed batter missed England’s tours of Pakistan, New Zealand and even Bangladesh and&nbsp;also didn’t play the T20 World Cup that England won for the second time, equaling Windies’ record in this format. He, however, is expected to get fit in time for the extended summer including for the Ashes, which begins on June 16th in Edgbaston.&nbsp;

While for the Punjab Kings in the IPL last year, he didn’t fare that well with the bat scoring just 253 runs in 11 innings, averaging a mere 23, Bairstow had completely different results to his name in ten Tests played in 2022. With most centuries (six) until September before he got injured, Bairstow had 1061 runs to his name.&nbsp;

Punjab Kings will start their IPL 2023 campaign against former two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders on April 1st at IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.

With most centuries (six) until September before he got injured, Bairstow had 1061 runs to his name. Punjab Kings will start their IPL 2023 campaign against former two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders on April 1st at IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.

A hearing into the racism scandal at Yorkshire county cricket club started on Wednesday with former England international Tim Bresnan accused of making a racist comment towards the sister of Azeem Rafiq.&nbsp; It is more than two years since Rafiq alleged he was subjected to racist abuse while playing for English county Yorkshire. During Wednesday's proceedings of an independent Cricket Discipline Commission in London, it was alleged Bresnan, an ex-Yorkshire all-rounder, used a racial slur against Rafiq's sister Amna in 2014.

Jane Mulcahy KC, the lawyer for the England and Wales Cricket Board, said Bresnan is alleged to have directed the term "fit Paki" and "FP" towards Asian women, including Rafiq's sister Amna at a Yorkshire media day. He was also alleged to have referred to Rafiq and Asian team-mates Adil Rashid, Ajmal Shahzad and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan as "the brothers" and "you lot". In a previous statement, Bresnan has denied the allegations, having claimed the term "brothers" was used but not in a discriminatory or racial way.

The 38-year-old, capped 23 times at Test level by England, also insisted he had no recollection of using the phrase "you lot" in a match against Derbyshire and claimed to have never met Amna Rafiq. Bresnan is one of several former Yorkshire players and coaches, including Andrew Gale, Matthew Hoggard, Richard Pyrah and John Blain, who have refused to engage with the Discipline Commission process.

But the CDC panel will still hear the charges against them in their absence. Hoggard and Blain, like Bresnan, have denied a charge of bringing the game into disrepute and allegations of using racial or discriminatory language. However, Mulcahy said it was "more likely than not" each of the trio used the racist phrases alleged.

Gary Ballance, also charged, has already admitted using racially discriminatory language and will not appear. Ballance, a former England Test player, is now playing for the country of his birth, Zimbabwe. Yorkshire confirmed last week that documents relating to racism allegations against the club were deleted under the previous regime.

Pakistan-born Rafiq, 32, first raised allegations of racism and bullying in September 2020, related to the spin bowler's two spells at Yorkshire. He told a British parliamentary committee in December 2022 the abuse he and his family had faced had forced him to leave the UK. Disrepute charges against seven individuals with prior connections to Yorkshire were issued by the&nbsp;ECB&nbsp;last June, with the club also charged.

But the only charged individual still set to appear is ex-England captain Michael Vaughan. Rafiq alleges Vaughan told him and a group of Yorkshire team-mates of Asian ethnicity there were "too many of you lot, we need to do something about it" at a match in 2009. Vaughan categorically denies the allegation, but Rafiq's claim has been corroborated by England leg-spinner Rashid, as well as former Pakistan paceman Naved.

The European Central Bank (ECB) is set to raise interest rates by 50 basis points in both February and March and will continue to raise rates in the months after, ECB governing council member Klaas Knot said.

European Central Bank set to raise interest rates by 50 basis points in both February and March

Former Yorkshire cricketer Azeem Rafiq has accused the ECB of being in denial of racism. He told the Parliamentary committee that the only thing that has changed in the last 13 months since he first gave the evidence of racism in English cricket, is the fact that him and his family has been driven out of the country last year.

Racism in cricket: Azeem Rafiq accuses ECB of 'being in denial'

England created history on the opening day of the Rawalpindi Test versus hosts Babar Azam-led Pakistan. After opting to bat first, on a flat surface, Ben Stokes-led Three Lions didn't do anything wrong on Day 1 to go to stumps at 506 for 4. Thus, England has created a world record for scoring the most runs by a team on Day 1 of a Test. In 1910, Australia had ended the Sydney Test's opening day's play at 494-6 versus South Africa. Thus, their arch-rivals in England have surpassed them to break the record after 112&nbsp;long years.&nbsp;

Coming out to bat, openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett made merry of the batting conditions versus the Shaheen Afridi-less bowling attack. England reached 174 for no loss at the lunch break, moving past India's 158/0 (27 overs) to have the most runs by a team in the first session. Crawley scored a 111-ball 122, Duckett departed for a well-made 107 whereas keeper-batter Ollie Pope scored a hundred (108) before Harry Brooks remained unbeaten on 101. Captain Stokes also joined the party and remains unbeaten on a 15-ball 34, laced with 6 fours and a six, as the visitors piled on the miseries versus Pakistan. Thus, England became the first-ever side to hit 500 runs on the opening day of a Test match.&nbsp;

The day saw as many as 73 fours and three sixes being scored by the English batters as Pakistani bowlers had no answers to their onslaught. While England's bazball approach has been hailed by many on social media platforms, many also slammed the dead wicket at Rawalpindi with bowlers having no say throughout the day.&nbsp;

Day Two will bring in a new challenge for Pakistan as they have a herculean task to stop England from running away from the game. Anything over 650 looks certain as of now unless a collapse takes place. In reply, Pakistani batters will have to bat very well and come close to England's first-innings score if they wish to stay alive in the game.

The European Central Bank (ECB) on Wednesday (December 1) opined that Bitcoin shouldn't be legitimised as it is being artificially propped up. The bank also said that Bitcoin was more akin to gambling. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have been variously presented as an alternative form of money and a shield from the inflationary policies pursued by major central banks such as the ECB in recent years.

But a 75 per cent fall was seen in the value of Bitcoin over last one year. This raised questions about volatility. Additionally, collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX this month has given fresh ammo to critics.

The value of Bitcoin peaked at nearly US$69,000 in November 2021 before falling to around US$17,000 by mid-June 2022, where it is still hovering now.

In an unusually scathing language, the ECB said in its blog that though Bitcoin appeared stable lately, it was "an artificially induced last gasp before the road to irrelevance".

"Big bitcoin investors have the strongest incentives to keep the euphoria going," authors Ulrich Bindseil and Juergen Schaaf wrote. "At the end of 2020, isolated companies began to promote bitcoin at corporate expense. Some venture capital firms are also still investing heavily."

The authors said VC investments in the crypto and blockchain industry totalled $17.9 billion as of mid-July but did not provide evidence of price manipulation.

Regulators all over the world are drafting rules for the crypto world, a complex ecosystem that ranges from stablecoins supposedly backed by conventional currencies to forms of lending that happen on the blockchain, or distributed ledger, that underpins those coins.

The ECB blog said regulation could be "misunderstood for approval".

"Since Bitcoin appears to be neither suitable as a payment system nor as a form of investment, it should be treated as neither in regulatory terms and thus should not be legitimised," Bindseil and Schaaf said.

Don't legitimise Bitcoin, it is being artificially propped up, warns ECB in scathing tone

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) reprimanded five former and current cricketers on Monday (October 10) over their old social media posts. The historical posts on social media by Jack Brooks, Andrew Gale, Azeem Rafiq and women's team star Danielle Wyatt and Evelyn Jones were found to be prejudicial in nature by the Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) of the ECB.

The five cricketers had been charged earlier this year for breaching the ECB Directve 3.3 which mentions no such actions should be taken that "may be prejudicial to the interests of cricket or which may bring the game of cricket or any cricketer or group of cricketers into disrepute".

Jones and Wyatt also admitted to breaching the ECB Directive 3.4 which urges all cricketers to abide by the anti-discrimination code. The five players will face no further action as Chris Tickle, the CDC Adjucator decided that a reprimand will be enough in all five cases.

Rafiq, who was under the spotlight last year and earlier this year after his accusations of institutional racism in the Yorkshire cricket club, was reprimanded for anti-semitic posts on Facebook. Former Yorkshire coach Gale was sanctioned for his offensive old posts on Twitter.

Rafiq, who had earlier spoken against facing racism in England cricket, said he was "ashamed and embarrassed" for his own ant-Semic comments during a social media exchange with his former England U-19 teammate Ateeq Javed in 2011. The duo had referred to a third unknown teammate as a 'Jew' for failing to pay his bill.

Reacting to the Cricket Discipline Commission's decision to reprimand him, Rafiq said the punishment is 'deserved' and that he will fully accept the panel's judgement. He also stated that he wishes to repeat his apology to the Jewish community.

Meanwhile, former Somerset all-rounder Brooks was reprimanded for a post on Twitter which included racist language directed towards current England pacer Tymal Mills. England cricket was rocked by racism claims last year and the board has since taken a strict stand against any incidents relating to discrimination and has been reprimanding the players for their previous actions.

England and Wales Cricket Board has informally offered to be the hosts if India and Pakistan plan to play a bilateral Test series but BCCI sources said chances of that happening in near future is "next to nil".

The UK daily 'Telegraph' reported that "Martin Darlow, the deputy chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, has held talks with the Pakistan Cricket Board during the current Twenty20 series and offered England's grounds as venues for ideally a three-match Test series in future."

While the ECB has made the offer for its own commercial gains, the powers that be in the BCCI laughed off the suggestions and said that no such possibilities might arise at least in the next few years.

"Firstly, ECB spoke to PCB about an Indo-Pak series and that's a bit weird. In any case, a series against Pakistan is not something that the BCCI will decide but it is the decision of the government. As of now, the stance remains the same. We only play Pakistan at multi-team events," a senior BCCI official privy to India's position told PTI on Tuesday.

India and Pakistan last played a short bilateral white-ball series back in 2012 in India and the last Test series dates back to 2007.

With the tense political relations between the neighbours, it is a big 'No' from BCCI irrespective of whether it is played at home, away or a neutral venue.

The newspaper states precisely the reason why ECB made the "generous offer".

"The matches would attract big crowds in the UK, which has a large ex-pat south Asian population," it said.

"The matches attract huge sponsorship revenue and television audiences."

However, the paper made it clear that even "PCB is not keen on playing India at neutral venue but are grateful for the ECB's offer, which shows the growing relationship between the two boards."

It stated that with the big nations again starting to tour Pakistan, it will be a "retrograde step in their eyes" if they happen to play on a neutral venue.

Indian women's cricket team star Taniya Bhatia has claimed she was robbed during her recent stay at the Marriot Hotel in London's North Maida Vale as part of the Indian team's recently-concluded tour of England. The Indian women's team was in England for a three-match T20I series followed by as many ODIs.

The tour concluded on Saturday with India defeating the hosts by 16 runs at the Lord's Cricket Ground in London.&nbsp;A 'shocked and disappointed' Bhatia claimed someone walked into her personal room at the hotel and stole her bag containing cash, cards, watches and jewellery.

She took to Twitter to lash out at the England Cricket Board (ECB) for the lack of security at the team hotel. Bhatiya, who was part of India's squad for the ODI and T20I series against England, urged the ECB to intervene in the matter and take action against the culprit.

India defeated England by 16 runs in the third and final ODI at the Lord's Cricket Ground on Saturday to register their first-ever clean sweep against the hosts in an ODI series on English soil. The tour concluded on Saturday with India defeating the hosts by 16 runs at the Lord's Cricket Ground in London. A 'shocked and disappointed' Bhatia claimed someone walked into her personal room at the hotel and stole her bag containing cash, cards, watches and jewellery. She took to Twitter to lash out at the England Cricket Board (ECB) for the lack of security at the team hotel. Bhatiya, who was part of India's squad for the ODI and T20I series against England, urged the ECB to intervene in the matter and take action against the culprit.
