England's former spinner Monty Panesar hailed R Ashwin as a 'brilliant' spinner ahead of both sides' five Tests in the Indian subcontinent, starting on Jan 25 in Hyderabad. Panesar feels Ashwin has adapted to different conditions brilliantly, over the years,&nbsp;to deliver the goods for India in the purest format of the game. It is to be noted that the wily Indian off-spinner is just 10 wickets away from claiming 500 wickets in red-ball cricket. Thus, he has a high chance to join the elite 500-wicket club during the home series versus Ben Stokes-led England.&nbsp;

<h2>'R Ashwin is like an app, he keeps updating every six months'</h2>

Ahead of the first Test, in Hyderabad, Panesar spoke to Hindustan Times and heaped praise on Ashwin. He said, "He has had the mindset to keep adapting and bowling different deliveries. He kept getting better. It's not easy all the time to take a lot of wickets on turning pitches. He's been given turners at home, but you can see the way he adapts all the time. He's like an app, he keeps updating every six months! That's what he has done throughout his career."

The ex-English spinner, who played a major role in his side's historic Test series win in India in 2012/13,&nbsp;added, "I always find that I am a student when it comes to Ashwin's bowling. I feel I am continually learning something new about his bowling. That's the asset Ashwin is. He is a brilliant bowler."

Ashwin has 490 wickets in 95 Tests at an average of&nbsp;23.69. At home, he has churned out 337 wickets at&nbsp;20.87. He will look to add to his wicket column in the forthcoming Tests versus England, challenging their aggressive style of batting.&nbsp;

In a widely expected move, the European central bank has left interest rates unchanged and signalled the imminent conclusion of its last remaining bond purchase scheme. Meanwhile, the Bank of England has chosen to maintain its key interest rate at a substantial 15-year high of 5.25%. Governor Andrew Bailey dismissed speculations of rate cuts, asserting it's premature to consider such measures.

Chris Woakes was omitted from England's 16-man squad for the upcoming five Tests versus India, which commence&nbsp;early next month. The England Cricket Board (ECB) announced the squad on Monday (Dec 11) which includes three uncapped players. While England have focused on strengthening their spin arsenal, the pace department comprises experienced campaigners such as James Anderson, Ollie Robinson and Mark Wood but Woakes didn't find a place. It is surprising because Woakes ended as the Player-of-the-Series, for 19 wickets and 79 runs, in Ashes 2023.&nbsp;

The 34-year-old fast-bowling all-rounder opened up on his omission while speaking on Sky Sports. "It's mixed emotions. You're always desperate to be in it, but at the same time, at my age, with my away record - particularly in the subcontinent - I feel like it's a fair decision. We had conversations about where my best cricket is likely to be played moving forward and, naturally in Test cricket, it looks likely to be at home," stated Woakes.&nbsp;

Notably, Woakes&nbsp;has scored 249 runs in 16 matches while accounting for 21 wickets across all formats in India. The experienced campaigner has been handy across formats, especially in Tests. In the home Ashes early this year, he became a part of the playing XI from the third Test and ended as the Player-of-the-Series, also winning the Player-of-the-Match in England's 49-run win in the fifth and final Test that led to the series ending in a 2-2 draw.&nbsp;

Fair decision: Chris Woakes reacts after being left out of England squad for India Tests

England are set to tour India early next year for five Tests. On Monday (Dec 11), the England Cricket Board (ECB) announced a 16-member England squad featuring three uncapped players.&nbsp;Surrey speedster&nbsp;Gus Atkinson and off-spinners Tom Hartley (Lancashire) and Shoaib Bashir (Somerset) are part of the squad with England focusing on their spin department in their subcontinental tour. Meanwhile, it also sees the return of Rehan Ahmed who made his debut in the format during England's tour of Pakistan last December.&nbsp;

Talking about some other big points, Chris Woakes and Liam Dawson have been excluded, wicketkeeper-batter&nbsp;Ben Foakes has been recalled whereas&nbsp;Ollie Pope and Jack Leach mark their return. Woakes' exclusion is a big surprise as he ended as the Player-of-the-Series in the Ashes 2023 edition, at home, after being a late addition. However, it seems England have focussed more on strengthening their spin department and, hence, have gone ahead with James Anderson, Ollie Robinson and Mark Wood to spearhead the pace attack.

Former New Zealand battler Lou Vincent can continue to play domestic cricket or any level below with immediate effect after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) revised the life ban imposed on him for corruption in 2014.

ECB's Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) released a statement on Friday to revoke the life ban imposed on the former Kiwi player which read, "The Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) has revised the life ban imposed in June 2014 on former New Zealand international Lou Vincent."

"This decision was reached following careful consideration of the specific circumstances of Mr Vincent's case and the supporting evidence and representations from a number of major cricket stakeholders including the International Cricket Council, New Zealand Cricket and the England and Wales Cricket Board and a host of others," the statement further added.

In 2014, the ECB imposed a life ban on the right-handed batter which restricted him from playing cricket at any level, entering any cricket ground, or coaching the game in a professional capacity.

After Vincent sent an application in August earlier this year, Gerard Elias CBE KC on behalf of the CDC decided to revise the life ban imposed on Vincent.

Vincent expressed his delight after he was given a second chance in his cricket career.

"I made a terrible mistake many years ago which I'll deeply regret for the rest of my life, and I remain very sorry for the harm I caused. Being able to return to the cricket environment means the world to me and I feel very fortunate to again have that opportunity," Vincent said in a statement released by New Zealand Cricket.

"I want to thank the ECB and the Cricket Discipline Committee and Gerald Elias CBE KC for their consideration of my application and their ultimate determination. Same with the ICC, NZC, the NZCPA and the many other organisations who supported me throughout this process - it's meant so much to me on a personal level. It's also important for me to acknowledge and thank my lawyer Chris Morris, whose guidance and support over many years is something I'll never forget," Vincent added.

After England's disastrous run in the ODI World Cup 2023 edition held in India,&nbsp;all-rounder Moeen Ali has backed the Jos Buttler-led English camp to defend their T20 World Cup title in the upcoming 2024 edition. In the first half of next year, the T20 WC will be held in the West Indies and the USA. England won the last edition, which was held in Australia in 2022. Recently, the national side had a woeful run in the ODI WC, entering as the defending champions and one of the favourites, where they failed to enter the semi-finals and ended seventh.&nbsp;

Moeen believes England is a better T20I side than in ODIs and has firmly backed them to lift the title next year. Reflecting on England's poor run in the ODI WC, Moeen stated, "We didn’t play well throughout the World Cup. The batters were out of form and it happens in cricket. England started the ODI WC with a loss to New Zealand and while they recovered with a big win over Bangladesh, everything went downhill from there on. They lost to Australia, India, South Africa, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka before ending their campaign with two back-to-back wins, over the Netherlands and Pakistan respectively.

Anyone would be forgiven to assume the family of chief of one world's most powerful central banks would have their finances in tip-top shape. After all, when truly world-class financial advice is freely available right in your house, what's the chance that you'll lose money? It appears there's a fat chance. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has admitted that her own son lost "almost all" of his money due to investment in cryptocurrency. And she did try to advice him before he lost the big bucks.

"He ignored me royally, which is his privilege," Lagarde told a town hall with students in Frankfurt. "And he lost almost all the money that he had invested."

"It wasn't a lot but he lost it all, he lost about 60% of it," Lagarde added. "So when I then had another talk with him about it, he reluctantly accepted that I was right."

Lagarde has two sons who are in their mid-30s. The ECB chief did not say which one lost the money.

'He ignored me royally': ECB chief admits her son lost cash invested in crypto

The European Central Bank has issued a stark warning as eurozone banks face a tech crisis. The ECB's survey reveals a 360% surge in losses in 2022, signalling a critical need for immediate action.

Euro banks face cyber meltdown

The European Central Bank (ECB) has exposed a looming cybersecurity crisis within Euro zone banks, shedding light on a surge in financial losses and critical vulnerabilities. ECB's survey paints a concerning picture of the banking sector's preparedness in the face of evolving cyber threats.

The unravelling crisis

The Euro zone is witnessing a financial reckoning as banks grapple with the fallout of tech failures and outsourcing challenges, resulting in millions of euros in losses. The ECB's survey indicates a 360% increase in losses, reaching 148 million euros in 2022. This sharp rise, attributed to the "unavailability or poor quality of outsourced services," underscores a pressing need for a comprehensive reassessment of cybersecurity measures.

Cloud surge &amp; outsourcing struggles

One of the key revelations from the ECB's report is the substantial surge in cloud-related expenses. In 2022, Euro zone banks experienced a 56% spike in cloud expenditures, constituting 3.1% of their total tech-related spending. This surge reflects a paradigm shift in banking as institutions increasingly embrace cloud-based services. Simultaneously, the survey highlights the challenges associated with outsourcing, as tech contractors fall short of delivering promised services, contributing significantly to the escalating losses.

ECB's stark warning &amp; sectoral implications

The ECB's findings go beyond financial losses, raising concerns about the sector's overall cybersecurity posture. The survey identifies fundamental shortcomings in how banks approach cybersecurity, with many failing to adequately identify and address potential risks. While the losses are concentrated in specific institutions, the ECB emphasises that they serve as a warning signal for the entire sector.

Call to action: Immediate measures required

The ECB issued an unequivocal call to action in response to the alarming findings. All banks under its direct supervision are urged to take immediate and concrete steps to align their tech and cybersecurity risk management with supervisory expectations. Banks subjected to inspections have already received specific recommendations, signalling a no-nonsense approach to address the identified shortcomings.

Bottomline

As Euro zone banks navigate this cybersecurity storm, the imperative for immediate action becomes clear. The sector must fortify its defences, addressing the immediate challenges of tech failures and outsourcing woes and undertaking a comprehensive overhaul of cybersecurity strategies. The ECB's survey serves as a wake-up call, demanding a united front against evolving cyber threats for a resilient and secure financial future in the Euro zone.

The unravelling crisis The Euro zone is witnessing a financial reckoning as banks grapple with the fallout of tech failures and outsourcing challenges, resulting in millions of euros in losses. The ECB's survey indicates a 360% increase in losses, reaching 148 million euros in 2022. This sharp rise, attributed to the "unavailability or poor quality of outsourced services," underscores a pressing need for a comprehensive reassessment of cybersecurity measures. Cloud surge & outsourcing struggles One of the key revelations from the ECB's report is the substantial surge in cloud-related expenses. ECB's stark warning & sectoral implications The ECB's findings go beyond financial losses, raising concerns about the sector's overall cybersecurity posture. The survey identifies fundamental shortcomings in how banks approach cybersecurity, with many failing to adequately identify and address potential risks. While the losses are concentrated in specific institutions, the ECB emphasises that they serve as a warning signal for the entire sector. Call to action: Immediate measures required The ECB issued an unequivocal call to action in response to the alarming findings. All banks under its direct supervision are urged to take immediate and concrete steps to align their tech and cybersecurity risk management with supervisory expectations. Banks subjected to inspections have already received specific recommendations, signalling a no-nonsense approach to address the identified shortcomings. Bottomline As Euro zone banks navigate this cybersecurity storm, the imperative for immediate action becomes clear. WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Euro Zone Banks caught in cyber crossfire: ECB survey unveils tech turmoil

England's Ben Stokes is set to undergo&nbsp;a surgery on his troublesome knee after the ODI World Cup, the all-rounder and Test captain said on Friday (Nov 3). The 32-year-old has not been bowling regularly due to his knee issues, which also hampered his run at the IPL 2023. He, however, expects to return in time to lead England in the five-match Test series versus hosts India early next year.

Ahead of Jos Buttler-led England's World Cup clash versus Australia in Ahmedabad on Saturday (Nov 4), Stokes told reporters, "I’ll be fine for the Test series in India. But yes, I am having surgery after the World Cup."

He added, "Not bowling makes it seem a lot longer than what it normally is. But over the last 18 months, it’s been ‘will I, won’t I? It’s probably the first time since I’ve had this knee issue where it’s been quite clear that I’m not going to be bowling."

Stokes has had injury issues since the start of the year. He was out of the second half of IPL 2023, where he represented MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK), after playing just two games and didn't bowl.

He somehow managed past the entire home Ashes series, but bowled just 29 overs in five games (taking three scalps).

With the bat, he was at his best, scoring 405 runs including a century and&nbsp;two fifties.

Stokes returned to ODIs, after a shock retirement last year, for the World Cup in India but has not managed to inspire the defending champions as Buttler &amp; Co are reeling at the bottom with only one win from six games.

After ODI World Cup, England Test skipper Ben Stokes to undergo knee surgery

Defending champions England have been a pale shadow of themselves in the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition in India. In six games, England have managed only a solitary win and have lost to England, New Zealand and India by big margins. Thus, they are pretty out of the semi-finals race and are alive in the tournament only mathematically. English opener Dawid Malan opened up on England's struggles and feels one should not blame head coach Matthew Mott.&nbsp;

"Motty is not the one walking out on the field. We are being given everything we need to perform. As players, we need to take responsibility when we cross that rope," Dawid Malan told BBC after England's 100-run loss to hosts India in Lucknow on Sunday (Oct 29).&nbsp; He said, "The facilities and work, everything is being done as it always has been. We just haven't been able to find a way to get wins on the board. It has been frustrating from a players' point of view because we know we're better than that."

Malan further stated that players need to take more onus and give their all in the remaining three games -- with 2025 Champions Trophy qualification at stake. "I'm not involved in selection or any of those things, so I don't know how that works or who is in charge of all that, but as players, we need to take responsibility when we cross that rope," he opined.

The left-hander, who has one century under his belt in the ongoing ten-team tournament, feels only good performances can bury the outside noise and stated that the group still remains close knit despite the horrible campaign. Malan mentioned, "I guess whenever you have a poor campaign there is always someone who's going to be targeted whether it be the captain, players, coach or selectors. People's jobs are being scrutinised and players' careers are being scrutinised. The only way we can get the noise off the coach is by performing. And it is up to us in the next three games to win these games and take that narrative away because we have not performed."

"I know people say that a lot when their backs are against the wall but genuinely, we still back each other, we're still here for each other. We just haven't been able to put those performances out on the pitch," he further added.

England’s star all-rounder and Test captain Ben Stokes signed a one-year contract extension with the England Cricket Board (ECB) on Tuesday (Oct 24). The deal comes despite other big-name players signing three-year contracts including Mark Wood, Joe Root, and Harry Brook. The ECB released a list of 18 players on the new contracts but Stokes remained a big absentee, indicating his time with the national team could be coming to an end in the next couple of years.

<h2>Stokes signs new deal</h2>

Stokes appears to have kept his options open ahead of the renewal of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA) and the ECB next year, which aligns with a new cycle of broadcast rights.

"The landscape of cricket changing" when asked if he had considered whether he would play ODIs beyond the ongoing World Cup. I want to play as much cricket as I possibly can for England," Stokes said last week.

"That's where it is for me. I love representing the badge and I want to do that as long as I possibly can and play as many games as I possibly can."

Stokes has previously claimed that he supports players turning down long-term contracts which could help in securing their professional career. The two-time World Cup winner only recently returned to the national fold of ODI set-up in September having announced his retirement from the format in 2022. He was drafted into the ODI World Cup squad but was not available for the first few matches.

His return though did not go according to plan against South Africa as England suffered their biggest loss in the ODI World Cup by 229 runs. The defeat was their third of the World Cup and has condemned them to the bottom spot in the league. However, with Pakistan losing to Afghanistan their chances of making the last four are still good and a return to form for the England side could them defend their crown.

Ben Stokes agrees on one-year central contract with ECB; Root and others sign three-year deal

The European Central Bank (ECB) has made a significant attempt towards introducing a digital version of the euro, a move that aims to provide secure and free electronic payment options for citizens across the Eurozone. The ECB has officially announced that a two-year "preparation phase" for the digital euro will commence on November 1.

During this period, the ECB will finalise regulations, select private-sector partners, and engage in testing and experimentation, paving the way for potential issuance and rollout of the digital currency in the future.

While this announcement marks the initial steps in a multi-year project, it sets the ECB ahead of other central banks from the Group of Seven (G7) nations and may serve as a blueprint for others to follow. Several Caribbean countries and Nigeria have already launched digital currencies, while China and Sweden have conducted pilot projects in this realm. In contrast, central banks like the Federal Reserve, the Bank of England, and the Bank of Canada have displayed more cautious approaches towards such initiatives.

The digital euro, once implemented, will function much like any online wallet or bank account, with the distinctive feature of being free to use and backed by the ECB, ensuring its safety. Nonetheless, the project faces criticism from various quarters, including bankers, regulators, some academics, the European Union’s privacy watchdog, and specific consumer groups. Their concerns revolve around the fear that digital currency might drain deposits from the commercial sector and offer limited improvements compared to existing accounts. Reuters cited Markus Ferber, a German member of the European Parliament, who remarked that the ECB has yet to effectively communicate the added value of the digital euro.

To address apprehensions regarding the impact on commercial banks, the ECB intends to place a cap on individual ownership of digital euros, likely around 3,000 euros. The ECB views the digital euro as a means to introduce competition into the payment market, which is currently dominated by U.S. credit card companies.

Similar to physical cash, digital euros will allow users to make small offline payments in close proximity to recipients, and the ECB emphasises that it will not retain transaction data. The digital euro will be distributed by the ECB, commercial banks, and digital wallet providers, but it will be accessible only to residents of the Eurozone and its overseas citizens, addressing concerns about adoption in countries with weaker local currencies.

The push for digital currencies among central banks is gaining momentum. Central banks representing a fifth of the world's population are expected to introduce their own digital currencies within the next three years, according to a survey by the Bank for International Settlements. While such projects began to gain prominence in 2019, the rise of stablecoins, crypto tokens backed to some extent by traditional currencies, has rejuvenated the momentum of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).

“We deplore the appalling loss of innocent life following recent events in Israel and Palestine. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of all the innocent victims, and those who are still missing, as well as the communities who are affected,” the England and Wales Cricket Board said in a statement.

“While sport seems trivial compared to the harrowing scenes we have all watched, it is also an opportunity for people to come together and remind ourselves that there’s far more that brings us together, than divides us. We should now all unify in our hope for peace,” the statement added.

The war between the two nations has divided the world with countries like USA, India, and England supporting Israel while few countries have supported Palestine. On the cricketing ground, England all-rounder Moeen Ali waved his support to Palestinians having put up a post on his X handle.

Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan dedicated his hundred against Sri Lanka to the victims of Gaza when he posted on his X handle. He scored an unbeaten 134 against Sri Lanka in what was a record chase in the history of the World Cup.

The England Football Association (FA) will also keep a minute’s silence to mourn the death of people who lost their lives in the war. England are all set to play Australia in a friendly on Friday at Wembley Stadium before they prepare for the Euro qualifiers.

ECB releases statement on Israel-Hamas war; calls for peace amid escalating situation

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has voiced confidence in the ECB's ability to achieve its target of bringing inflation back down to 2 per cent. In an interview with French newspaper La Tribune Dimanche, Lagarde also expressed optimism regarding Europe's gas reserves situation, citing various factors contributing to her positive outlook.

Last month, the ECB implemented a record-high key interest rate of 4 per cent, signalling a strong commitment to addressing inflationary pressures. Lagarde emphasised that the sustained levels of the key ECB interest rates would play a crucial role in facilitating the timely return of inflation to the desired target.

"The key ECB interest rates have reached levels that, maintained for a sufficiently long duration, will make a substantial contribution to the timely return of inflation to the target," Reuters quoted Lagarde as saying during the interview conducted on October 2.

Despite acknowledging that inflation was currently on a significant downward trajectory, Lagarde remained optimistic about the short-term economic outlook. Lagarde highlighted the importance of structural reforms being implemented in the European economy, underscoring the positive impact they could have on future economic performance.

In addition, she drew attention to the remarkable progress made in replenishing gas reserves, surpassing 90 per cent by September 2023. This development has bolstered Europe's preparedness for the upcoming winter season, providing a sense of confidence and security.

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has voiced confidence in the ECB's ability to achieve its target of bringing inflation back down to 2 per cent.

She cited several reasons for her confidence, including ongoing economic reforms taking place in Europe and notable improvements in the region's gas reserves situation. Lagarde highlighted the importance of structural reforms being implemented in the European economy, underscoring the positive impact they could have on future economic performance. England's World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan feels winning the CWC 2023 edition, which kicks off on October 5 (Thursday) in India, would be a bigger achievement for Jos Buttler-led defending champions after their 2019 success. In the last edition, held in England and Wales, Morgan-led England won the ODI World Cup for the first time ever, beating New Zealand in terms of boundary count in an epic final at Lord's on July 14.

Buttler-led England will start the tournament as one of the favourites. Morgan believes winning the title this time around would be a bigger achievement as he feels the white-ball captain&nbsp;Buttler has not had the same level of support in the build-up to this World Cup as Morgan had ahead of the 2019 edition. Back then, England were revamping their white-ball teams following a disastrous 2015 World Cup. Thus, the priority was white-ball cricket.

In recent times, Test cricket has regained priority in England cricket due to Ashes 2021/22 and Ashes 2023. A lot of times, Buttler has not been able to field the main XI with many being rested for Test cricket. Even in last year's T20 World Cup, which Buttler &amp; Co. won in Australia, a lot of the regulars featured together after a long gap. Thus, Morgan believes it will be a bigger achievement for England to win this upcoming edition, which is also being played in&nbsp;unfamiliar conditions.

In his column for Sky Sports, Morgan wrote, "The challenges for me going into 2019 were completely different to what Jos has gone through coming into this tournament. Between 2015 and 2019, our sole focus was trying to win the ODI World Cup at home. There was a clear emphasis on having your best players available in the year leading up and trying to get absolute role clarity in every position possible. Jos has not had that."

"All things considered, it would without a doubt be a bigger achievement for England to win this World Cup than when we won in 2019. The nature of the schedule has not allowed them to have the type of preparation they would like and being away from home, especially in India where India are so strong, is tough. Winning here would carry a lot more weight than winning at home. I am still extremely hopeful that England can defend the title, though," Morgan added.

Winning the ODI World Cup is certainly not easy but defending it is much more difficult. Only West Indies (1975 and 1979) and Australia (who won three in a row in 1999, 2003 and 2007) have managed to defend their titles. Hence, England have a herculean task -- despite having one of the strongest squads -- to win the upcoming edition in India.

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have roped in Mo Bobat as their new director of cricket. The 40-year-old is currently with England Cricket Board as their Men's team performance director. Bobat has been associated with the ECB since last 12 years and has a good relationship with new RCB coach Andy Flower from their overlapping time with England.

During Bobat's tenure at performance director, England won both 50-over and 20-over World Cup titles while seeing a change of fortune in Tests with Brendon McCullum as coach and Ben Stokes as the skipper. Bobat joined the ECB at 2011, looking after Under-19 program initially before being named as the board's first Player Identification Lead in 2016.

RCB rope in ECB performance director Mo Bobat as Director of Cricket; appoint Luke Williams as new RCB-W coach

The England Cricket Board (ECB) has announced some new measures to tackle discrimination in response to this summer's Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) report. The 317-page ICEC report, which was released in June ahead of the Lord's Test, had given 44 recommendations for the ECB to bring parity to English cricket.

In a 34-page response by the ECB, the board believes it to be able to carry out "94% of the ICEC recommendations". The board, however, said that a 'further analysis' will be required to fulfil the rest of the things. One of the most important aspects of the ICEC recommendations were around equal pay between men and women cricketers at both, domestic and international level by 2029 and 2030, respectively.

ECB chief executive Richard Gould said that funding will be an ongoing issue but believes England cricket is "on a journey to try and change history."

"There is a pot of money that we need to find, but we have to find that, because there's been underinvestment in women's team sport for decades," Gould said. "That's one of the things that this report has highlighted, and we're determined to act on it."

Speaking about ECB's immediate plan, Gould said: "We have two priorities at the moment in terms of finances for the game."

"One is ICEC, to ensure we can deliver on those [recommendations] and the wider discussion on EDI [equality, diversity and inclusion]. The other is to make sure that we don't lose all of our best players to a variety of different franchise tournaments around the world," he added.

The ICEC report 'Holding Up A Mirror To Cricket' was sanctioned amid the racism saga that had hit English cricket following Azeem Rafiq's narrations of account while the player was with Yorkshire.

The incident brought to the fore deep-seated bias and discrimination rooted in English cricket.&nbsp;

England cricket announces new measures to tackle discrimination after ICEC report

In an effort to eliminate the possibility of franchise teams acquiring England's top cricketers, the England Cricket Board (ECB) has proposed special three-year contracts, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

The contracts are an update to the previous central contract structure, which only included one-year contracts, and they come at a time when Indian Premier League (IPL) ownership has expanded to other T20 tournaments around the world, allowing clubs to hire players exclusively for their needs all year long.

As per ESPNcricinfo, 26 contracts have been offered. The 20 contracts out of 26 are multi-year, with a group of top players including Ben Stokes, Harry Brook and Mark Wood in receipt of three-year packages.

The star pacer Jofra Archer could be in line for a three-year deal.

"It's certainly not negative, it kind of gives you a bit of security,"&nbsp; Ben Duckett was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

"The security of players wanting to keep playing for England is perfect. For me the main thing is walking out and representing my country, it's not really a contract but that's a bonus," he added.

England's players will now decide whether to accept the contracts. While the basic remuneration has been agreed upon, those offered multiple years may request 12-month deals to give themselves greater flexibility.

These contracts, which will come into effect from the start of October, represent a significant step forward for the ECB after a month of back and forth with the England team. There will inevitably be kinks to iron out and disgruntled players who have narrowly missed out on the initial batch. But by and large, the situation is regarded as more beneficial, particularly for those who go on to sign lengthier contracts.

Eight players, officials charged for breaching Emirates Cricket Board anti-corruption code

A Reuters report claims that European Central Bank president Christine Lagarde seized the mobile phones of her fellow policymakers at this week's meeting & rebuked them for leaking crucial information. The unprecedented move is the boldest step that Lagarde has taken to stop data leaking out from the governing council. This issue has plagued her presidency as well as that of her predecessor, Mario Draghi.

ECB acts against information leak

The European Central Bank (ECB) made a significant move by raising its key interest rate to a record high of 4 per cent on Thursday. However, in light of the economic struggles faced by the euro zone, the ECB signalled that this rate hike, which marked the 10th increase in a 14-month battle against inflation, is likely to be its last.

The ECB, which oversees monetary policy for the 20 countries sharing the euro, also revised its inflation and economic growth forecasts. It now anticipates that inflation will decrease more slowly towards its 2 per cent target over the next two years while revising downward its growth projections.

This present situation indicates the challenges faced by ECB policymakers as inflation rates continue to exceed the target rate, yet high borrowing costs and economic difficulties in China are hampering overall economic activity.

Consequently, the ECB sent a strong signal that its interest rate hikes have likely come to an end. This prompted a drop in euro zone bond yields and the euro’s value, while European shares gained as investors speculated that rate cuts might be on the horizon in the coming year.

Reuters quoted a statement made by the ECB saying, “Based on its current assessment, the Governing Council considers that the key ECB interest rates have reached levels that, maintained for a sufficiently long duration, will make a substantial contribution to the timely return of inflation to the target.”

However, this return to target inflation is now expected to occur at a slower pace than previously projected. The ECB’s previous forecasts suggest inflation rates of 5.6 per cent in 2023, 3.2 per cent in 2024, and 2.1 per cent in 2025.

The 25-basis-point interest rate hike pushed the rate that the ECB pays on bank deposits to 4 per cent, marking the highest level since the launch of the euro currency in 1999. When the ECB began to strictly control its monetary policy in July 2022, this rate came to reach a low of minus 0.5 per cent, indicating that banks had to pay to keep their funds safe with the central bank.

ECB President Christine Lagarde did not entirely dismiss the possibility of continued rate hikes, emphasising that interest rates would need to stay at restrictive levels for a while. Reuters quoted her at a press conference as saying, “The focus is going to move, going forwards, to the duration, but that is not to say, because we can't say that now, that we are at peak.”

Nevertheless, market reactions and forecasts have indicated scepticism about the ECB's commitment to keeping borrowing costs high for an extended period. Traders now anticipate the possibility of a rate cut as early as June, up from expectations of a cut in September prior to Thursday’s decision, which shall follow two more rate cuts anticipated at the end of 2024.

The lower market rates following the hike raise questions about the ECB’s determination to maintain elevated borrowing costs. Frederik Ducrozet, head of macroeconomic research at Pictet Wealth Management, commented, “The ECB won't be happy about this.”

While the ECB’s decision is being closely watched, the U.S. Federal Reserve is widely expected to stick to the same rates at its upcoming policy meeting. In contrast, the Bank of England is expected to proceed with a rate hike, despite some adjustments in expectations following the ECB's decision.

Responding to questions about whether the ECB's downgrade of its growth forecasts implied a regional recession as the base-case scenario, Lagarde maintained that the slowdown was temporary, expressing confidence that growth would rebound in 2024.

The ECB's adjustment of its 2024 inflation estimate played a role in the discussions, highlighting concerns that inflation, currently above 5 per cent, might remain at elevated levels for an extended period.

On Wednesday (September 13), Ben Stokes slammed a career-best 182 in England's&nbsp;third and penultimate ODI versus New Zealand at The Oval, London. Riding on his daddy hundred, Jos Buttler &amp; Co. took an unassailable lead in the four ODIs, with an 181-run win, as they prepare&nbsp;for the upcoming ODI World Cup, to kick off in India on October 05.

On August 16, Stokes came out of his 50-over retirement ahead of&nbsp;defending champions England's ODI WC opener, where they play New Zealand in the inaugural&nbsp;game in Ahmedabad. After his knock versus the Black Caps, which is the highest individual score in ODIs by an English batter, Stokes revealed that he knew he would be coming back for the 50-over World Cup.

"Obviously I've been asked a lot about my knee over a long period of time, so I just said that to leave it," Stokes said, post the third ODI versus the Kiwis,&nbsp;in relation to his comments at the conclusion of&nbsp;Ashes 2023. He added, "I knew that I'd be playing in these games and potentially in the World Cup then when I said that, but it was just the easiest thing to say that and put you (the media) off the radar."

England women cricketers are set to receive equal match fees as their male counterparts, starting as soon as Friday, September 1 T20I against Sri Lanka. The move, recommended by Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) report earlier this year, comes after the recently-concluded women's Ashes saw record crowds.

The multi-format Women's Ashes in June-July this year set new records at Edgbaston, the Kia Oval and Lord's as well. The series also witnessed first ever sold-out women's ODI series and an increase of 200% in ticket sales from 2019. The series, during which one Test, three ODIs and three T20Is were played, saw the crowds of 110,000 - a new high in women's cricket.

The ICEC reports says that England women cricketers get about 20.6 percent match fee of what their male counterparts gets. The England Cricket Board, however, pegs the number at around 30%.&nbsp;

Speaking on the historic move, England skipper Heather Knight said, "It's really important that we continue to drive the women's game forward and it's fantastic to see equal match fees for England Women and England Men."

"The direction of travel for the women's game has always been the most important thing, creating a sustainable product that people want to watch and play, and I'm sure this will make cricket an increasingly attractive sport to girls and young women as we continue to grow the game.

"I would also like to thank the PCA and England Women's Player Partnership for their support in representing the players and the growth of the professional game," she added.

ECB's chief executive officer, &nbsp;Richard Gould, said, "This summer's thrilling Metro Bank Women's Ashes series demonstrated how women's cricket is continuing to grow at pace in this country, with record attendances and TV viewing. Growing the women's and girls' game is a key priority for us, and in recent years we have considerably increased investment both in building a domestic women's structure to produce the players of the future, and in increasing player rewards."

England women cricketers to get equal match fees as male counterparts

In a historic move, the bilateral cricketing ties between England and Zimbabwe are set to resume after a gap of nearly two decades, as the ECB announced hosting Zimbabwe for a one-off four-day Test in May 2025 (28-31), the venue for which remains unknown for now.

Both England and Zimbabwe haven’t faced off in any bilateral affair since 2004, with relations between two boards getting stranded due to political tensions stemming from the country under the then Zimbabwean government.

Even during the 2003 World Cup in Africa, England refused to travel to Harare for their scheduled game against Zimbabwe (for which the points were deducted), as ECB suspended ties with their counterpart on the government’s advice a couple of years later.

England, who had earlier played two four-day Tests against Ireland in 2019 and 2023, will host Zimbabwe on their home soil, who played the inaugural four-day Test against South Africa in December 2017. Both teams have played six Tests, with the first coming in 1996 while remaining during Zimbabwe’s tour of the UK in 2000 and 2003.

ECB Chief Richard Gould welcomed the decision, saying,&nbsp;"We are delighted to be able to host Zimbabwe for a Men's Test match for the first time in two decades. Zimbabwe has a proud cricket history and have produced world-class players and coaches who have enriched the game across the world.

"We are committed to developing a closer relationship with Zimbabwe Cricket, and the announcement of this Test against our England Men's team is a step in that ambition,” he said, as quoted in ESPNcricinfo.&nbsp;

<h2>‘We are delighted'</h2>

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) managing director Givemore Makoni also sounded elated to join hands with ECB and pen the first game between both countries in over two decades.

“We are absolutely delighted to be playing bilateral cricket in England for the first time in over two decades after we agreed to play a Test match in May 2025.

"The significance and magnitude of this tour cannot be over-emphasised, and I would like to say a huge thank you to the ECB for committing to the resumption of cricketing relations between our countries that date back to the introduction of the game in Zimbabwe in the 1890s.

"The experience of playing a Test match against a top team like England is massive for the current generation of our players, coming at a time when our game as a whole is on an upward trajectory,” he added.

Meanwhile, in 2003, it was a certain James Anderson, who made his debut against Zimbabwe at the Lord’s and returned with a maiden five-wicket haul in Tests.&nbsp;

Twenty years later, James is the third-highest wicket-taker in Tests, with 690 wickets to his name. It remains to be seen if he will be around till 2025 to play Zimbabwe after 22 years.

According to a report in Telegraph Sport, Stokes if willing to risk missing IPL 2024 if he needs ample recovery time in his schedule. He represents the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the premier tournament in India.

It is to be noted that the all-rounder called it quits from the shorter format in July 2022, citing&nbsp;‘exhaustion due to too much cricket’. While he was asked about a return in ODIs during the recently-held Ashes 2023, in the United Kingdom, the 32-year-old gave a fitting response.

"I'm retired," Stokes reiterated, as quoted by the ICC. "I'm going on holiday after this game and that's as far as I'm thinking."

However, he had a different view after starring in England's T20 World Cup 2022 final win, over Pakistan, with a gritty 52* at the MCG, Melbourne last November. Back then,&nbsp;he was asked if he is inclined to return to the ODI format.

To this, Stokes&nbsp;stated, "… who knows how I might feel towards a World Cup at the time. Going to a World Cup is an amazing thing to do, to represent your country. But at the moment I'm not even thinking about that."

England's white-ball coach Matthew Mott recently opened up on Stokes' ODI future&nbsp;and told Mail Sport, "Jos (Buttler) will probably lead the way on that communication, but Ben's pretty straight with all of us. We will see if he's keen. There has not been a clear direction on what he's going to do yet, but we are still hopeful. I've always said his bowling would be a bonus, but just look at what he brings with the bat, even in the field."

It will be interesting to see if Stokes features&nbsp;in&nbsp;the 50-over mega event in India, which kicks off on October 05 with England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad. Recently, England's spin-bowling all-rounder Moeen Ali came out of Test retirement for Ashes 2023 and played a pivotal role for Stokes &amp; Co. in the five games which ended in a&nbsp;2-2 stalemate versus Australia.

England's Ben Stokes set to come out of retirement for World Cup 2023 - Reports

Stuart Broad announced his retirement in the middle of the fifth and final Test of Ashes 2023. Broad ended his career in a fitting way, slamming a six on his last ball and also claiming the last two wickets of the high-voltage series. The legendary bowler ended with 604 Test scalps and a total of 847 wickets. Even in Ashes 2023, he was England's top wicket-taker (22) and second-most overall.&nbsp;

<h2>'It was not a surprise'</h2>

Recently, Broad's bowling partner James Anderson revealed that the 37-year-old Broad was considering retirement in 2022 before Test captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum persuaded him to reconsider.&nbsp;"Stuart told me about his retirement over a coffee before we got on the team bus for the third day's play. I was a bit shocked initially but when it sank in, it was not a surprise. He considered it last summer but Baz and Stokesy managed to talk him out of it," Anderson wrote in his column for the Telegraph.

He added, "Then if you look back on the Ashes series, as he said himself, it was the perfect way to go out. It was nice we did not go out at the same time together as well. We have always been put in a bracket as a partnership but he is in his own right, one of the best bowlers England has ever produced so he deserved his own send-off."

Broad started his international career in 2006. In his initial years, the pacer bore the brunt of Yuvraj Singh who hit him for 6-sixes in an over during the 2007 T20 World Cup. However, he reinvented himself and became a potent force especially in the purest format of the game. The speedster was a regular in England's Test setup and played 167 games, ending with 3,662 runs -- with a best of 169 versus Pakistan -- and claimed 604 scalps.
