England`s limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan wants the cricket board to tackle the Yorkshire racism row "head on", insisting there was no place for any kind of discrimination against any player.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has been rocked by former player Azeem Rafiq`s allegation of racism at Yorkshire County Cricket Club, which has been suspended from hosting international or major matches.

Club chairman Roger Hutton has resigned over their handling of allegations made last year by former England under-19 captain Rafiq who is of Pakistani descent.

"I think if they`re matters of an extreme or serious nature like these are, they need to be met head on, and for us as a team, that`s exactly what we want to see," Morgan told a news conference ahead of Saturday`s Twenty20 World Cup contest against South Africa.

"We firmly believe that there is no place in our sport for any type of discrimination.

"I think the actions of ECB board to Yorkshire have indicated how serious they are about dealing with issues like this ... obviously those actions speak louder than words."

Yorkshire batsman Gary Ballance, who said he had used racist language towards his former team mate Rafiq, has been indefinitely suspended from England selection.

Asked for his view, Morgan said: "I think the decision that was taken at the start of last summer in a similar instance with Ollie Robinson is consistent with the board`s decision with Gary Ballance."

Morgan said his team, who often take a knee before matches in an anti-racism gesture, were trying to usher in a change.

"For probably the last two to three years, our culture has been built around inclusivity and diversity. It`s actually been quite a strong part of our game," the 35-year-old said.

England should handle racism row at Yorkshire Cricket Club 'head on': Eoin Morgan

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) suspended Yorkshire County Cricket Club from hosting any international matches over the club’s lack of response to racism experienced by former player Azeem Rafiq.

It comes after the 30-year-old Pakistan-born Rafiq accused Yorkshire of failing to act after he alleged racism during his time with the English county in September 2018.

Yorkshire offered the Pakistan-born off-spinner “profound and unreserved apologies”, but last week they said that they would not take disciplinary action against any staff.

The lack of response drew a wave of criticism, prompting sponsors, including kit manufacturer Nike, to cut their ties with the club.

In a strongly-worded statement following an emergency board meeting on Thursday, the ECB described Yorkshire's handling of Rafiq affair as ‘abhorrent’ and suspended their hosting rights until they improve their governance.

“It is clear to the Board that YCCC’s handling of the issues raised by Azeem Rafiq is wholly unacceptable and is causing serious damage to the reputation of the game. The ECB find this matter abhorrent and against the spirit of cricket and its values,” the statement said.

“There is no place for racism or any form of discrimination in cricket and where it is found, swift action must be taken. This matter must be dealt with robustly if the sport is to demonstrate its commitment to truly being a game for everyone,” it added.

The move will set a good precedent for all the other county clubs who fail to act against any instants of racism despite being apprised of by the players.

The decision will also encourage other players to come out and openly report any abuses or racial slurs faced by them immediately instead of waiting for years to highlight the issue. It will also help sensitise the local English players on how to behave with the overseas players.

Yorkshire had been notorious for their “institutionalised racism” against Asian and African origin players.

Before Rafiq, it was Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara who in December 2020 revealed that his teammates in Yorkshire used to address him with a generic name “Steve” instead of calling him by his given name.

Following Thursday’s statement, Rafiq, said, “I need a little time to reflect on what the ECB has said this evening and the actions they’re proposing to take.”

“I will not be commenting further at this time,” he tweeted.

ECB, sponsors set right precedent as ‘abhorrent’ Yorkshire punished over racism row

Ian Watmore, the Chairman of England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), has stepped down from his role with immediate effect, said an announcement by the ECB on Thursday. Watmore, the first paid chairman of the ECB, had served just 13 months out of his five-year term after taking over from a retiring Colin Graves in 2020.

Watmore had reached a mutual agreement with the Board to stand down following the end of the domestic season and after helping to steer the game through the challenges of Covid over the past year. His departure comes after heavy criticism and lack of clarity on England cancelling the men`s and women`s white-ball tours to Pakistan scheduled for October this year.

"It is with regret that I step down as Chair of the ECB, but I do so in mindfulness of my own wellbeing and that of the game which I love. I was appointed to the post in a pre-pandemic era, but Covid has meant the role and its demands on time are dramatically different to all our original expectations, which has taken a personal toll on me. Given this, the Board and I feel the ECB will be better served by a new Chair to take it forward post pandemic," said Watmore in a release by the ECB.

"Leaving now, at the end of the season, gives the Board time to find a new Chair to support cricket through the challenges of the 2022 season and beyond. On a personal level, I also retired last month after five years at the Civil Service Commission and recently became a grandfather. I would now like to retire completely from work and enjoy our great game as a spectator," added the 63-year-old.

During his tenure, the ECB saw the delivery of a full cricket season along with the successful return of crowds, increased diversity on the ECB Board, the launch of the Disability Premier League and the creation of the Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) to explore matters relating to race, class, and gender in the sport.

ECB also said that Watmore`s deputy, Barry O`Brien, will step up as interim Chair, having indicated to the Board that he will not be a candidate for the role. "We are grateful to Ian for everything he has contributed during his time at the ECB. He has helped guide the game through an incredibly challenging period, where despite the impact of Covid we were able to stage a busy summer of men`s and women`s domestic and international cricket."

"He also leaves with the recreational game in a strong position, with record numbers playing the game this summer, which I know will please him enormously as a lover of the grass roots of sport. We wish him the best for the future. We will shortly begin a process to appoint a new Chair to lead the ECB, as the organisation continues to deliver on its ambitions to grow the game and create an increasingly inclusive and welcoming sport for all."

Former spinner Mushtaq Ahmed believes that England's cricketers would happily tour Pakistan and says his country deserved better having travelled the other way at the height of the pandemic.

Ahmed, who has a foot in both camps after serving as England's spin-bowling coach in 2009-2015, voiced his frustration to AFP after English cricket chiefs controversially cancelled tours for their men's and women's teams next month to cricket-crazy Pakistan.

The first trip by the England men's side to Pakistan since 2005 was only meant to last four days with two Twenty20 matches in Rawalpindi.

But the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) last week cited "increasing concerns about travelling to the region", days after New Zealand abandoned their tour of Pakistan minutes before the start of the first one-day international in Rawalpindi, citing a security alert.

The ECB decision was met with fury in Pakistan which only went up a notch after the Daily Mail newspaper reported that the England players were not consulted.

"I think from my experience, playing in England and also coach of England for six years, I think the guys are very open-minded and they know the circumstances of the world," Ahmed, 51, said of the English players.

"I know them -- I played with lots of cricketers, I coached them for six years, I played (English) county cricket," he added.

"I think (the) players will definitely come now," he said, pointing out that a number of England players had featured in the Pakistan Super League in recent seasons.

However, a deadly 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore saw Pakistan become a no-go destination for international teams.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said last month that it is "very confident" the Ashes, starting in Brisbane on December 8, will go ahead as planned.

Broad, 35, who is working on his fitness after he was ruled out of the recent India series following the first test due to a calf injury, said he would be happy to travel to Australia.

"I don't feel there will be a postponement. In my mind, it is 100 percent clear that an England team of some description will embark on the tour," Broad wrote in his Mail on Sunday

Ravi Shastri, the head coach of the Indian cricket team has "absolutely no regrets" about organising the book launch two days before the Oval Test, an event where apparently no face masks were worn.

The same book launch was criticised and widely perceived to be the reason for a COVID-19 outbreak that forced the cancellation of the fifth Test against England in Manchester.

"I have absolutely no regrets because the people I met at that function were fabulous. And it was good for the boys to get out and meet different people rather than constantly being in their rooms," said Shastri in an interview with The Guardian.

Shastri, fielding coach R Sridhar, bowling coach Bharath Arun and physio Nitin Patel were found infected during the Oval Test as they didn't travel with the team during the fourth Test match that India won by 157 runs.

They remained in isolation and when junior physio Yogesh Parmar's test came positive ahead of the fifth Test in Manchester, the game was controversially called off with India leading the series 2-1.

After the cancellation of the fifth Test, critics raised concerns over the book launch, commenting on the same, Shastri said, "At the Oval Test, you were climbing stairs used by 5,000 people. So to point a finger at a book launch?"

"But I wasn't worried because incubation probably takes weeks. There were about 250 people there and no-one got COVID from that party."

Talking about his time in isolation, Shastri said: "It was funny because in my 10 days, I didn't have a single symptom barring a little sore throat. I never had any temperature and my oxygen level was 99 per cent all the time.

"I didn't take any medication through 10 days of my isolation, not a single paracetamol. I tell the guys: 'Once you're double jabbed, it's a bloody 10-day flu. That's it'."

On being asked if he was made the scapegoat in the aftermath of the abandoned Test, Shastri said the truth was otherwise.

"I've not got it at my book launch because it was on the 31st (August) and I tested positive on 3 September. It can't happen in three days. I think I got it in Leeds. England opened up on 19 July and suddenly the hotels were back, lifts were back. No restrictions."

Commenting on the decision to call off the fifth Test, Shastri said he wasn't involved in the decision to not play the Manchester Test while he was isolating in London. He also didn't discuss the matter with the players.

"No. I didn't know who had got it. I didn't know (the junior physio) got it suddenly and tested positive. He physically treated five or six players. I think that's where the issue started. We were aware that the incubation period meant that someone might get it in the middle (of the Test).

"A lot of players had their families there. So it became a situation where you don't know what that player is thinking. He's got a young kid, you know, he's got to think of them. It was a little, I would say, touchy.?

Fifth Test between India and England called off over COVID-19 concerns

England and India on Wednesday were fined 40 per cent of their match fees and penalised two ICC World Test Championship points each for maintaining slow over-rates in the first Test in Nottingham.

Chris Broad of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanctions after both sides were ruled to be two overs short of their targets after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

In addition, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short.

Captains Joe Root and Virat Kohli pleaded guilty and accepted the proposed sanctions, so there was no need for formal hearings.

On-field umpires Michael Gough and Richard Kettleborough, third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire David Millns levelled the charges.

The first Test between India and England ended in a draw after rain played spoilsport on the final day of the Test. The visitors looked set for victory, needing 157 runs to win on the final day, with nine wickets in hand, but the weather gods had something else in mind.

Cricket - India, England docked WTC points for slow over-rate in 1st Test

Irish-English cricketer Eoin Morgan believes The Hundred tournament starting today will give a splendid stage to English talent the same way the IPL had done to Indian cricket.

Morgan highlighted how adolescents like Rishabh Pant became easily recognised names after getting the stage in the IPL.

The Hundred, as the name suggests, is a 100-ball cricket tournament in the UK.

The games involve eight men's and women's teams from major cities across England and Wales.

The men's version of The Hundred starts today.

Morgan said that a great show at The Hundred could be the ideal take-off platform for people to break into the worldwide circuit.

"I think the Hundred could create a platform that could springboard somebody right into international cricket. We could sit here all day and talk about the names that the IPL has produced say three-four years ago," he said.

"Rishabh Pant was a young kid coming through it's very exciting to watch. Looking at him now, he’s a prominent international star," said Morgan in a conversation with Eastern Eye.

He further clarified how tournaments like the IPL, the BBL, and the CPL test players' nerves in pressure circumstances. He feels this will assist them with adjusting worldwide cricket a lot faster.

"We’ve seen it at the IPL, in the Big Bash, and in the CPL. It makes superstars out of people as those platforms test them with pressure and how they deal with it and prepare them really well for international cricket," he added.

With different youngsters coming through, Morgan trusts England needs a rivalry like The Hundred where forthcoming talents can grandstand their abilities at a high level.

Morgan further called attention to how a second-string English side as of late crushed Pakistan 3-0 in an ODI series, displaying England's profundity and strength in their limited-overs series.

"We need it more than the format needs us, simply because of the quality of cricketers that we have now in the country," he said.

"It was unbelievable what we witnessed in the one-day series against Pakistan, where 15 of our squad members went into isolation and we almost had to pick a second-string team. We won 3-0 and all the performances were exceptional, which shows the real strength and depth in English cricket at the moment," he added.

ALSO READ: Cricket: Haseeb Hameed, Ollie Robinson included in England's 17-member squad against India "Rishabh Pant was a young kid coming through it's very exciting to watch.

Cricket: We need 'The Hundred' more than the format needs us, says Eoin Morgan

"Following PCR tests administered yesterday (Monday) in Bristol, The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) can confirm that seven members - three players and four management team members- of the England Men's ODI party have tested positive for COVID-19," said ECB in an official release.

"Those impacted will now observe a period of self-isolation from July 4 following the UK Government's protocol on quarantine.

"It is obviously disappointing to lose players with the ability of David and Marcus, but the realities of COVID means there are practicalities that are difficult for some overseas players to overcome," the ECB said in a statement on Thursday. "Replacement overseas players will be signed by Southern Brave, and we look forward to The Hundred showcasing world class cricket this summer." Contracts of Warner and Stoinis were worth 100,000 pounds ($141,680.00) and 80,000 pounds respectively with the Southern Brave for The Hundred, which is set to kick off next month. The ECB has invested heavily in the competition, which it hopes will attract younger audiences to the sport. Matches will comprise 100 balls per innings with a change of ends after 10 deliveries. "(It was) eight, nine years ago. Can the ECB find out please, if beyond that time, Robinson has kept on behaving like that, saying things like that, tweeting things like that?" Holding told Sky Sports on Tuesday.

"If he has done something like that nine years ago, and since then he has learnt and done nothing like that and he has changed his ways in recent years, then I don't think you should come down too hard on him."

"You don't allow him to continue playing while an investigation is going on at the same time, because if you find out things that are horrible coming out in that investigation," he said. "But do it quickly, let's get it over with quickly."

Ollie Robinson came out and apologised after the end of Day 1 of the first Test against New Zealand. The tweets he posted when he was 18, which were bigoted and misogynist in nature, reemerged during the first day of the Test and Robinson was near tears as he gave a statement of regret after stumps.

"On the biggest day of my career so far, I am embarrassed by the racist and sexist tweets that I posted over eight years ago, which have today become public. I want to make it clear that I'm not racist and I'm not sexist. I deeply regret my actions, and I am ashamed of making such remarks. I don’t want something that happened eight years ago to diminish the efforts of my teammates and the ECB as they continue to build meaningful action with their comprehensive initiatives and efforts, which I fully endorse and support.

"I will continue to educate myself, look for advice and work with the support network that is available to me to learn more about getting better in this area. I am sorry, and I have certainly learned my lesson today."

The contention encompassing Ollie Robinson's old tweets removed all the sparkle based on what was a great debut. Ollie Robinson made his test debut in the first match of the series at Lord's, taking seven wickets across New Zealand's two innings.
