Over 61,000 people died as a result of extreme heat during Europe's record-breaking summer last year, according to a study published on Monday (July 11). The study calls for increased efforts to protect against even deadlier heatwaves that are expected in the coming years.

Europe experienced its hottest summer on record in 2022, with blistering heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires affecting several countries. While the European Union's statistics agency, Eurostat, had previously reported a high number of excess deaths during the summer, the specific deaths directly linked to the heat had not been quantified until now.

Haiti: At least three killed in earthquake days after deadly floods hit Caribbean nation

In a world marred by pandemics, conflicts, and economic upheavals, there is a far greater and insidious threat that looms large: climate change. As global temperatures soar and cataclysmic weather events become distressingly frequent, the most vulnerable populations bear the brunt of its harrowing repercussions.

Earth, the only known planet to harbour life, has taken billions of years to evolve into a delicate oasis. However, human activities now pose a grave threat to our planet and future generations. However, in the last century, we have rapidly altered the delicate, life-sustaining balance of our planet. In the name of development, we are on a path of destruction, pushing species to extinction and ecosystems to the brink of collapse. We shouldn't forget that humans are just one of the 8.7 million species which live on this rocky planet. The decisions we make today will shape the world that our future generations will inherit.

Climate change is a ticking time bomb and its effects are visible in every part of the world. No country, no community, is immune to the perils of a warming planet.

Climate change's most telling effect is on marginalised communities that are already shackled by poverty and scarce resources. Small island nations teeter on the precipice of devastation as rising sea levels imperil entire populations, leaving them grappling with the looming spectre of displacement

Indigenous peoples are deeply intertwined with their surroundings. They live a sustainable lifestyle in harmony with nature and have the lowest carbon footprint. But they are forced to be at the forefront, facing the wrath of mother nature. They confront the ominous erosion of ancestral livelihoods and the erosion of cultural heritage due to the degradation of their habitats.

Water scarcity emerges as another critical conundrum exacerbated by climate change. Traditional drought-stricken regions witness the inexorable dwindling of water reserves, exacerbating challenges related to drinking water, sanitation, and agricultural sustenance. This vicious cycle further deepens the grips of poverty, engendering social strife and forcing them to embark on perilous journeys as migrants.

Health risks, too, assume alarming dimensions under the relentless onslaught of climate change, with the most vulnerable bearing the brunt of its merciless blows. Heatwaves unleash as an ominous spectre; the mercury has embarked on a deadly upward journey. Several all-time high temperatures records have been broken. Extreme heat waves may be our new normal, thanks to climate change. The ominous question is: are we prepared?

The spread of vector-borne diseases, such as malaria and dengue fever, is increasing exponentially as climatic shifts facilitate the spread of disease-carrying vectors, casting a pall of gloom over the most marginalised populations.

So, what can we do? Well, effectively tackling climate change demands a multifaceted approach where sustainable solutions are the bedrock of its edifice. The transition to renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, not only curtails the planet-warming greenhouse gases but also serves as a fulcrum for job creation and catalyses economic prosperity. Investment in energy-efficient technologies and the fostering of a culture of energy conservation become pivotal steps in mitigating the carbon footprint that engulfs us. But for that to happen quickly, wealthy nations and multinational corporations need to share green technologies with vulnerable societies honestly.

Agriculture provides livelihoods for 2.5 billion people and is the largest source of income and jobs for poor, rural households. In developing countries, agriculture accounts for 29 per cent of GDP and 65 per cent of jobs. Small island nations teeter on the precipice of devastation as rising sea levels imperil entire populations, leaving them grappling with the looming spectre of displacement Indigenous peoples are deeply intertwined with their surroundings. In developing nations, agrarian communities battle the ravages of erratic rainfall patterns that disrupt agricultural cycles, thrusting them into the jaws of abject food insecurity. There is an urgent need for free access to climate-smart technologies, such as drought-resistant seeds and efficient irrigation systems, to empower vulnerable farmers to adapt to the ceaseless mutations of their ecological tapestries. The need of the hour is collaborative synergies between governments, non-governmental organisations, and communities that will engender adaptation initiatives that remain firmly rooted in local realities, thus maximising efficacy. Magnitude 5.2 earthquake jolts Afghanistan, tremors felt in parts of India

An earthquake of 6.6 magnitude struck in the Gulf of Darien near the border of Panama and Colombia late on Wednesday night, May 24, at 10:05 pm local time, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Quoting the USGS, Reuters reported that the tremors were felt in both countries.

A second earthquake strikes

Nine minutes after the first earthquake hit the region, another temblor with 4.9 magnitude on the Richter Scale struck the same location. The USGS reported about the aftershocks of the second earthquake.

Several follow-up quakes measuring less than 4 in magnitude have been reported since last night.

As reported by the USGS, the epicentre of the earthquake was around 40 kilometres (25 miles) off the coast of Panama's eastern town of Puerto Obaldia and both quakes struck at a depth of 10km (6.21 miles).

"Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters, hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts within 1,000 km (620 miles) of the earthquake epicentre," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said in a bulletin.

Several pacific states have issued tsunami warnings including Vanuatu, Fiji and Kiribati after the major earthquake.

Here’s what we know so far about Tsunami warnings in the Pacific

The PTWC said waves up to 3 metres (10 feet) above tides were possible for Vanuatu and urged people in affected coastal areas to be alert. Smaller waves were possible for Fiji, New Caledonia, Kiribati and New Zealand, the centre said.

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department said an earthquake of such magnitude had the potential to cause “destructive Tsunami waves” of 1-3 metres (3-10 feet) that could strike Vanuatu coastlines. The island nation has warned its citizens to seek higher ground, as the office of Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department is receiving calls from people on the southern islands who had felt the shaking.

Turkey sends puppy to Mexico after death of rescue dog in quake operation

The discovery of a leak at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Oregon has created buzz worldwide. The hole at the Pacific Ocean’s bottom has been steadily leaking liquid into the ocean. This hole is about 80 km off the Oregon coast. Researchers are worrying that this hole could trigger a huge megathrust earthquake. However, it may not be as dramatic or sinister as originally thought.

What researchers are finding about the 'OCEAN LEAK' along Oregon Coast

A study has highlighted the potential threat currently faced by California as it experienced a record number of earthquakes recently. The study noted that in Long Beach and Seal Beach areas, a thousand tiny tremors have been recorded over eight months.

They noted that the majority of the quakes were shallow, and reached depths less than two kilometres below the surface, but the region is at risk of bigger tremors.

The study - published in Seismological Research Letters - stated that the researchers used three dense nodal arrays consisting of thousands of sensors to detect and locate seismic events in the Long Beach–Seal Beach area of California. They said that small events can be detected at "sufficient signal‐to‐noise levels during the night when urban noise is relatively low."

The study suggested that constant shallow earthquakes, on the other hand, could build up and generate the possibility of a surface earthquake. The Alquist-Priolo zone, which surrounds the surface of active faults, must be at least 50 feet wide.

In the media release, the study authors wrote: "Our results suggest the zone of high hazard at the surface may therefore be much wider than the Alquist-Priolo zone indicates."

The study further mentioned that most of the located events are clustered at very shallow depths and the results have also supported earlier suggestions that the shallow Newport‐Inglewood fault is wide-splayed in this area.

According to the story, the "seismicity pattern also compares well with some newly identified faults from reflection seismic surveys" and the shallow events underscore the complex nature of the faults and their seismic hazard. The study mentioned that shallow events elude detection by the regional seismic network.

Some of the faults were discovered recently by oil company exploration studies, but Yang pointed out that there was no proof that the minor shallow earthquakes recorded in their investigation were triggered by oil and gas operations.

Caltech researchers Yan Yang and Robert Clayton wrote in the SRL study that the catastrophic Long Beach earthquake of 1933, magnitude 6.4, may have ruptured in part on the Newport-Inglewood fault. While big earthquakes, such as the one in 1933, would most likely begin six to ten kilometres below the surface, " shallow seismicity suggests that there are many possible paths for a rupture to propagate to the surface."

As quoted, Yang said: "The Newport-Inglewood fault along its entire length, as well as the whole Los Angeles Basin, could benefit from such studies. This would help to see if there are faults that have not been detected with the permanent seismic network or through geologic mapping."

So far, no casualties have been reported due to the earthquake. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre stated that the earthquake did not pose any threat to Hawaii and the wider Pacific. The chances of a localised tsunami died down without any reported impact. The country's National Emergency Management Agency gave standard instructions to people to remain at a distance from coastal areas to ensure their safety. On March 16, the Kermadec Islands region was hit by another earthquake of 7.1 magnitude which prompted tsunami warnings. However, hours after the tsunami warning was issued by the US Geological Survey for the Kermadec Islands, the New Zealand National Emergency Management Agency had clarified, "There is no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the earthquake in the Southern Kermadec Islands.” On March 4, Kermadec Islands was again rocked by an earthquake of 6.9 magnitude and the depth of the quake was reported to be 152 km (94 miles), said USGS. WATCH | Gravitas: Will the Pacific Ocean witness a mega quake? Conflicting reports of the earthquake's magnitude had emerged with the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre reporting the magnitude at 6.6 with a depth of 183 km. However, this time around no tsunami warning was issued after the earthquake. The Kermadec Islands have remained uninhabited, apart from Raoul Island where scientists keep visiting for carrying out meteorological observations or weed control work. New Zealand always remains prone to earthquakes as it shares its boundary with two major tectonic plates of the world - the Australian Plate and the Pacific Plate. The country is also located on the edge of a zone of intense seismic activity which is known as the Ring of Fire. Thousands of earthquakes rock New Zealand every year. Earthquake of 7.1 magnitude strikes New Zealand's Kermadec Islands

A study has revealed that the media's coverage of climate research is, to a large extent, carried out in a way that doesn't provoke action. It claims that the media coverage doesn't inspire the pro-environmental behaviours needed to address the problem. The study has been published in the Global Environmental Change scientific journal. For it, researchers analysed around 50,000 scientific publications on climate change for the year 2020 and examined which ones made it into the mainstream media.

They found that the media tends to pick research within the natural science field. There was also an evident focus on large-scale climate-based projections that won't happen for many years, reports AFP.

Researchers warned that this approach could cause a "possible distancing reaction on the part of the public."

Thus, they said it is essential to emphasise potential solutions and inspire a sense of empowerment to address the issue, rather than solely focusing on the negative impacts of climate change.
