The Pacific nation of Vanuatu which witnessed back-to-back cyclones and earthquakes had been placed under a state of emergency on Friday (March 3). As the nation was reeling from the aftermath of Cyclone Judy, it was hit by Category 4 Cyclone Kevin which also brought strong winds and torrential rain. Vanuatu is currently battling its second major cyclone in a week.

This also comes as the country was hit by two earthquakes early Friday, and while there were no immediate reports of casualties, the situation on outlying islands remained unclear. Vanuatu is spread across 13 principal islands in the south-western Pacific, which had already been battered by Cyclone Judy that hit the capital city of Port Vila on Wednesday, prompting evacuation for hundreds of people across the nation.

According to reports, Cyclone Judy had torn off roofs, flooded roads, and uprooted countless trees. Additionally, several parts of the capital city have been without power for two days now. Cyclone Kevin passed over Port Vila late Friday and moved to the country’s southern island province of Tafea early Saturday. The wind speed was recorded at 230 km per hour, as per the meteorology department.

The Tafea province which is home to nearly 30,000 people was placed under a red alert, said the National Disaster Management Office, as per Reuters. United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Pacific will also be shipping emergency supplies to Vanuatu from Fiji.

“It's crazy, Vanuatu is used to natural disasters, but I think this is the first time it has had two cyclones back to back,” said UNICEF’s Eric Durpaire to AFP. He added, “Medical centres, hospitals and schools will have been affected.
On Friday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the first 6.5 magnitude earthquake, off the island of Espiritu Santo in the north at a depth of 10 kilometres. Subsequently, an aftershock with a magnitude of 5.4 struck the island. Prime Minister of Vanuatu, Ishmael Kalsakau announced a state of emergency on Friday. “After the aerial assessment reports and evaluations on the ground, we will be able to declare the disaster areas in the places that have been severely damaged,” said the PM.

Magnitude 6.1 earthquake hits northern Japan, no tsunami warning issued

Earthquake is back in the headlines, and it’s UK which has felt the tremors this time. An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 (as indicated by Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts System) hit the country Friday night and had people shaking from South Wales to the West Midlands. Some said the walls of their homes were shaking, others said it felt like a bomb going off. Others who weren’t sleeping heard a loud bang.

A shallow earthquake hit the UK

First of all, what’s a shallow earthquake? An earthquake whose origin is very close to the earth’s surface is called a shallow earthquake. One that hit UK originated a mere two kilometres down the earth's surface north of Rhondda. They are generally felt stronger by the affected population, than the deeper ones.

What parts of UK are most prone to earthquakes?

Earthquakes are a natural occurrence that can happen anywhere in the world. However, in the British Isles, they are mostly concentrated on the western side of the mainland. Meanwhile, eastern Scotland and northeast England are relatively free of seismic activity. Additionally, Ireland also experiences very few earthquakes.

The North Sea, on the other hand, is relatively more active than the mainland. This may be due to the tectonic plates in the area. The North Sea is situated on the boundary of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, which are slowly moving away from each other. This movement can cause stress to build up and eventually result in earthquakes.

Strongest earthquakes that UK has ever faced

In 1931, the biggest earthquake ever was recorded in the UK near the Dogger Bank, and had a magnitude of 6.1. This event, luckily, occurred 60 miles offshore, but still caused some minor damages to structures along the east coast of England. The earthquake that caused the most significant harm in the UK was in 1884 around Colchester. This earthquake led to over 1200 buildings requiring repairs, chimneys collapsing, and walls cracking.

Earthquake in Tajikistan: Regions near border with China hit by 6.8 magnitude quake

Media watchdog in Turkey on Wednesday (February 22) has fined three broadcasters over their coverage of recent, devastating earthquake in the country. The three channels are known for editorial line critical of Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Halk TV, Tele 1, and FOX were all handed fines. These fines were calculated based on their revenue for the month preceding to the said infractions. The news channels reported shortcomings in government’s earthquake response. The earthquake has killed more than 42,000 people in Turkey.

Erdogan unleashed a sweeping crackdown after a failed coup in 2016 that placed much of the media under the control of the government and its business allies.

He will seek re-election this year, and his administration's handling of the deadly quake has become a key battleground issue.

The criticism has been spearheaded by the main opposition leader who is running neck and neck with Erdogan in opinion polls.

In October, Turkey passed a law that punishes dissemination of "fake news" with three years in prison.

According to Reporters Without Borders, Turkey ranked 149 out of 180 for press freedom in 2022.

Halk TV and Tele 1 were fined five per cent of their January revenues, Ilhan Tasci, a member of the Radio and Television Supreme Council watchdog's board who was nominated by opposition parties, wrote on Twitter.
