Scientists have discovered a hole in the Pacific Ocean which spews hot liquid from inside. What is this doom hole capable of? Is climate change puncturing the ocean floors? Molly Gambhir brings you a report.

Gravitas: Will the Pacific Ocean witness a mega quake?

Experts are on high alert after discovering a crack at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean that could trigger a magnitude 9 earthquake. The hole in the bottom of the ocean is spewing a liquid that keeps the tectonic plates lubricated.

A hole in the bottom of the ocean!

Scientists have found a peculiar leak in the Pacific Ocean floor that may one day cause a massive earthquake. The leak, which was spotted off the Pacific coasts of the USA and Canada, expert says, has never been seen before.

This seep is known as Pythia's Oasis and is present in the Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ), a huge fault line that extends from Vancouver Island on Canada's west coast all the way down to Northern California.

CSZ is where two plates collide, but it's possible that this fluid is regulating pressure between the continental and oceanic plates. The water gushing out "like a firehose" is at the fault where underneath the temperatures are between 300 and 500 degrees Fahrenheit. That is why the water that is splashing out of the ocean floor about 50 miles offshore from Newport, Oregon is warmer.

In any case, if additional water keeps coming out, reports say, this may be increasing the pressure at the fault and stressing the two plates. Then, an earthquake could occur if the tension increases and the plates start to move.

Russia’s Kamchatka east coast struck by 6.6 magnitude earthquake, no damages reported

At least three people were killed after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Papua New Guinea’s northwestern East Sepik province, on Monday (April 3), as per media reports. The earthquake hit a remote part of the Pacific Island just before dawn at 4:00 am (local time). The country’s National Disaster Centre also said dozens of homes in the area were affected as emergency crews continued to assess the damage across difficult terrain.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck at a depth of 62 kilometres near the Chambri Lake system in the sparsely populated region of East Sepik Province of PNG. A spokesman for the country’s Natural Disaster Centre said one person had died in Wewak, while two people had died in Angoram district, as per Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

The news was also confirmed by the local councillor in Angoram district, Darren Mai, who said the two dead were family members, reported Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Furthermore, those injured were flown by NGO Samaritan Aviation’s seaplanes on the Sepik River for medical attention.

A member of parliament in the area, Johnson Wapunai took to social media and warned people saying, “Chambri lake is boiling and the continuous quake is still happening right now.” He also urged people to watch out for falling objects or trees and to be on alert for further seismic activity, reported AFP.

A local resident named Colles Pinga who lives north of the epicentre told Australian Broadcasting Corporation, three houses had collapsed in his village and families have been injured. He added, “There’s landslides along the riverbanks...it’s quite frightening”.

Natural Disaster Centre’s Colonel Carl Wrakonei also told the Australian media outlet that the earthquake had impacted all six districts of East Sepik and that they are unable to cover all of them. “One of the challenges is mobility and accessibility, it's going to be difficult,” reported Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

According to AFP, the quake on Monday also left cracks in the interior floods of the new regional hospital which was under construction and nearly completed and dislodged some of the building’s paving stones.

At least three killed after 7.0 magnitude earthquake hits Papua New Guinea

A dangerous volcano that killed 25,000 people 38 years ago, is active once again. Colombia's Nevado del Ruiz volcano, which is situated on the notoriously dangerous Pacific Ring of fire, is experiencing seismic activity and authorities on Friday warned of a "probable" new eruption with weeks or even days.

Colombia's ministry of mines in a statement said that there has recently been a "significant increase in seismic activity," for the Nevado del Ruiz volcano.

The heat from the 1985 eruption melted the snow that caps mountains in surrounding areas; triggering a mudslide which as per AFP "swallowed" the town of Armero and killed around half of its population of 50,000.

The World Meteorological Organization has removed the names Ian and Fiona from its rotating list of storm names. The decision as per AFP was taken due to the death and destruction Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Fiona caused last year. Meteorologists, during a meeting in Costa Rica, came to the conclusion that the future usage of the names could be upsetting. Ian and Fiona will be replaced by two new names; "Farah" will replace "Fiona", while "Ian" will be replaced by "Idris."

Here's why names Fiona and Ian have been 'retired' from UN's hurricane roster

A panel of government advisors on Tuesday advised Britain to remedy a "lost decade" of minimal planning to mitigate the worst effects of climate change. The report comes as the Conservative government readies to outline "energy security" amid the power crisis triggered by the Ukraine-Russia war. Experts said that last year's record-breaking heat and wildfires were a portent of what's to come. "The last decade has been a lost decade in terms of preparing for and adapting to the risks, the risks we already have, and those that we know are coming," said adaptation committee chairwoman Julia King. The report predicts that even if the UK meets its "net zero" carbon emissions by 2050 goal, things could still take a turn for the worse.

No matter what measures are taken, rising temperatures are here to stay, the report said. This necessitates new initiatives to adapt energy and water supplies, buildings, transport networks and other necessary infrastructure.

"The government's lack of urgency around climate resilience is increasingly in contrast to the experience of the population in the UK, and the impacts are only going to get worse," King told reporters.

She added that "adaptation can no longer be left as the Cinderella of climate change."

Chris Stark, the chief executive of the UK's climate change committee, said that years of warming temperatures are in store no matter what and that we have "no option but to adapt to the change in the climate."

"The question is only whether we do that well, by doing it early, or wait till later when it will cost more and increase the disruption," he said.

Climate crisis: UK govt told to fix 'lost decade' of minimal planning, mitigation

In southern California, United States, the ongoing "winter weather drama" took a wilder turn as a tornado on Wednesday tore through the city, ripping roofs off of buildings and smashing cars around. The tornado, as per AFP, raked the city of Montebello near Los Angeles. Residents were left scrambling for safety as the storm destroyed cars, broke windows and created a "mess." Aerial pictures taken after the tornado showed several roofs with holes in them, pipes and other installations twisted and broken, and vehicles appear to have been dragged out of their parking spaces.

Speaking to broadcaster KTLA, one local business owner described his experience of suddenly coming face to face with the storm and said he was driving when he "saw this tornado in front of me and had to reverse out."

Frank Hoogerbeat is a Dutch researcher at Solar System Geometry Survey. In the past, he predicted the deadly earthquakes in Turkey and Syria based on planetary positions. Recently, he predicted the earthquake in Delhi-NCR on March 21 in the latest prediction video on SSGEOS's YouTube channel posted on March 20. In the video 'Planetary & Seismic Update March 20 2023,' Frank Hoogerbeets suggested "some seismic increase, more likely around March 22" as he observed a primary lunar peak followed by planetary conjunction after the New Moon on March 21. His forecast of earthquakes in India was correct. People around the globe are surprised to know the accuracy of Hoogerbeets' earthquake predictions. Here's everything you need to know about Geologist Frank Hoogerbeets and his predictions. Frank Hoogerbeets Predictions Frank Hoogerbeets predicted the upcoming earthquakes in the recent videos on SSGEOS's YouTube channel. He estimated 'strong to major' seismic activity of 7.1 magnitude on March 16 in the Kermadec Islands and a 6.8 magnitude earthquake near the coast of Ecuador on March 18. Both his predictions were accurate. Furthermore, he explained he based his predictions on the analysis of the planetary geometry and pointing to lunar (red) heights in the SSGI graph. According to him, the planetary conjunction of Sun-Mercury-Jupiter converged with New Moon on March 21. Thus, he anticipated a 'mid-6 magnitude range' earthquake on March 22. Frank Hoogerbeets consistently uploads YouTube videos and Twitter posts with seismic updates on SSGEOS's social media handles. In the recent video titled 'NOT EVERY FULL MOON IS THE SAME,' he briefs the viewers about the correlation between the full moon and planetary positions with earthquakes. SSGEOS' Solar System Geometry Index Frank Hoogerbeets works for SSGEOS, the Netherlands-based research institute. It has crucially contributed to 'seismic activity predictions' by launching pivotal software Solpage and SSGI. Frank Hoogerbeets contends that planetary alignment can foretell earthquakes. The Solar System Geometry Index (SSGI) is a dataset computation based on values provided by particular geometric planetary positions, the Moon and the Sun. Who is Frank Hoogerbeets, the researcher behind predictions of quakes in Delhi-NCR, Turkey & Syria?

As the casualties from the 6.5 quake that struck Afghanistan are still being counted, a question is going viral. Are we inching closer to the Great Himalayan Earthquake? Here's what Molly Gambhir has to say.

Gravitas: Time to prepare for the Great Himalayan Earthquake?

As a massive earthquake struck Afghanistan, Pakistan and India on Tuesday night, people were hit with fresh fears, especially as the memories of the Turkey-Syria quake are still fresh in everyone's minds. Following the devastating quake on February 6, experts warned that the Himalayan region can witness a huge quake in the near future.

Massive earthquakes with the potential to cause damage in the Himalayan region in the near future were predicted by the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) on February 21. However, he also said that both property loss and death can be averted by building sturdy structures, as reported by ANI.

Dr N Purnachandra Rao, the chief scientist at NGRI, told ANI that the Indian plate is shifting roughly five centimetres each year, which is causing tension to build up along the Himalayas. The Earth's surface is made up of numerous plates that are continuously in motion.

"We have a strong network of 18 seismograph stations in Uttarakhand. The region referred to as the seismic gap between Himachal and the western part of Nepal including Uttarakhand is prone to earthquakes that might occur at any time," added Dr N Purnachandra Rao.

Massive earthquakes can hit the Himalayan region any time, warns NGRI chief scientist

Last night, on March 21, strong tremors of earthquake were felt in northern India including the Delhi-NCR region after a 6.6 quake struck Afghanistan on Tuesday. According to reports, the earthquake was felt in Turkmenistan, India, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, China, Afghanistan, and Kyrgyzstan. People rushed out of their homes as the earthquake tremors lasted for several seconds in the northern Indian states including Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.

The Delhi Fire Services said that they even received a call about the titling of a building in the Shakarpur area. Though later on it was found that the good intention call was made by the neighbour of the building and there was no tilt. Many people from Noida also noticed the same phenomenon and soon everyone was outside their buildings. The major reason was the high-rise residential buildings in most of the Delhi-NCR region.

These buildings are not only dangerous during an earthquake but also in other disasters like fires, bomb scares and weather-related earthquakes. In such a situation, if someone is in a high-rise building, it is advised to not leave the building, especially if someone is on the top floor of a building.

There are other ways to save yourself when you’re in a tall or high-rise building. Here are some precautions that one can take if one resides in such a structure:

Earthquake in a high-rise building: Some safety tips

1. Take responsibility for your own safety first as in some situations, the first response might be delayed.

2. Familiarise yourself with the safety measures of your building, like fire alarms, sprinklers, voice communication procedures and alarm response.

3. Make sure the fire/emergency exit and stairwell are clearly marked and that they remain unlocked regularly. Also, make sure that they are free from debris and clutter that could obstruct the walkway.

4. If you are told to evacuate, go outside and gather at the pre-arranged meeting place.

What to do during an earthquake if you are in a high-rise building?

1. Move away from windows and outside walls.

2. Stay in the building. It is not advised to move to and fro during an earthquake. Follow the general rule of earthquake- Drop. Cover. Hold on.

3. Drop down onto your hands and knees before the earthquake knocks you down. This position protects you from falling and also allows you to move, if necessary.

4. Cover your head and neck underneath a sturdy table or desk. If there is no shelter nearby, get down near an interior wall or next to low-lying furniture that won’t fall on you. Then cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.

5. Hold on to your shelter or to your head and neck until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if the shaking shifts it around.

6. Do not use the elevators. The electricity may go out, and the sprinkler systems may come on.

7. If you are trapped, stay calm. Try to alert people or the rescue team by tapping on hard metal parts of the structure. Doing so may increase your chances of being rescued.

Some other considerations:

1. Walking/running during an earthquake can be fatal as the floor or ground is moving at the time of the quake. Studies in Japan have shown that walking as little as 10 ft or 3 m during an earthquake increases the chances of injury.

2. Taking cover is the only way to protect from falling debris which is the main source of injury in an earthquake.

3. If the building does collapse, a strong piece of furniture or a bathtub can provide the void space that lets you survive until rescuers can find you. If you are trying to walk somewhere, you are not being sheltered by any of these items.

4. Earthquakes don’t last that long. How fast can you practically leave your building when the floor/stairs are moving unpredictably and stuff is falling on you? Chances are you can’t make it all the way out of the building during a single earthquake anyway.

5. It is possible that moving toward the interior of the building or the staircase is a good idea, but that will also depend on your particular building.

Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that cost of the damage caused by last month's devastating earthquake has hit USD 104 billion. He spoke via a video link as donors at a conference in Brussels vowed funds to help Turkey and Syria.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen kicked off a EU-hosted fund-raising event by promising one billion euros ($1.1 billion) for reconstruction in Turkey and 108 million for humanitarian aid in Syria.

"The needs of the survivors are still massive and must be tackled with urgency," von der Leyen said.

During his address, Erdogan said that "regardless of its economic standing, it is impossible for any country to fight a disaster of this scale on its own."

Turkey was hit last month by a catastrophic 7.8-magnitude earthquake that flattened entire cities. And to add to the woes of the common people, flash floods occurred in the region.

After the UN complained of poor level of response to a call to come to Turkey help, aid groups urged donors to step up their commitments.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC), said they should at least ensure that the UN's emergency appeal for $1 billion for Turkey and $397 million for Syria are fully funded.

"Over a month since the earthquake, the situation in affected regions remains desperate," said Tanya Evans, IRC country director for Syria.

"With many homes damaged or destroyed, many people are left with no choice but to sleep in overcrowded and under-resourced collective shelters," she said.

6.7 magnitude quake jolts Ecuador

As a severe heatwave pushes temperatures in several regions including Sydney, Australian officials on Tuesday warned of a soaring risk of bushfires. Temperatures, as per Reuters, are rising to reach their highest levels in two years. Currently, Australia's most populous state of New South Wales (NSW) has 33 active fires, 12 of which are yet to be contained. Due to the fires, five public schools have been shut, and a total fire ban is in place across large parts of the state.

On Monday, many regions in NSW recorded their hottest day since January 2021. In some places, temperatures hit more than 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). On Tuesday, temperatures are forecasted to reach mid-to-high 30 degrees Celsius. Conditions are expected to ease starting Thursday.

However, the Bureau of Meteorology has warned that hot and dry conditions, accompanied by gusty winds, will elevate fire danger levels.

So far, the 38-year-old has found the back of the net on eight occasions in eight appearances for his new club. Recently, he met a young fan, who lost his father in the Syria and Turkey earthquake, and invited him for the Al-Nassr tie.

WATCH: Ronaldo invites young boy, who lost his father in Syria and Turkey earthquake, to Al-Nassr tie

It has been a month since Turkey and its bordering Syria were hit with a series of earthquakes and a number of aftershocks which have killed at least 50,000 people while millions have lost their homes and over 214,000 buildings collapsed. The search and rescue continued for weeks as some people were found under the rubble over 250 hours later as the deaths and damage spanned across 11 provinces in Turkey alone. The death toll is expected to rise in the coming days as many victims are yet to be identified.

What is crush syndrome?

Crush syndrome or traumatic rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown) is a localised crush injury which is defined as the compression of extremities (limbs) or other parts of the body which causes muscle swelling and/or neurological disturbances in the affected areas.

Additionally, external compression which reduces or cuts off the blood flow to the limbs causes the cells to die and once the pressure is removed can release toxins into the bloodstream. Crush syndrome is the systemic effect caused by traumatic rhabdomyolysis which can potentially release toxic muscle cell components.

It is characterised by the significant shock which can result in an organ or multi-organ system failure or death. These toxins can injure kidneys which can lead to kidney failure and cause seemingly stable patients’ health to rapidly deteriorate. Some patients with crush injuries, which commonly occur in catastrophes such as earthquakes, also require an amputation.

The aftermath of the rescue

For those survivors pulled out of the rubble, rescue was just the first step. Over the weeks, after the devastating earthquakes, thousands of patients were treated at the Adana City Training and Research Hospital in Turkey which is one of the largest trauma hospitals in the region and a majority of cases included “limb loss, tissue crushes and brain trauma,” the chief of staff Dr Suleyman Cetinkunar said, according to a CNN report.

In cases of crush syndrome, time is of the essence as some drastic injuries can also require field amputations. However, the situation of victims in Syria was not faring well either as the country did not have the infrastructure and many patients would have to be sent to Turkey for treatment, reported France24.

Speaking to Al Jazeera about the case of a two-year-old named Nour Abdelqader who was pulled out from the rubble, Abdelsalam al-Naasan, an orthopaedic surgeon at Akrabat Hospital said that both her legs were “severely damaged” and her right leg had to be amputated as the “crush injuries were too extensive” and the “limb was dead and infected”.

The doctor working at the hospital located near the Syria-Turkey border in the rebel-held town of Idlib also spoke about how Nour would require complex surgeries and treatment to make her left leg function. “What we can offer here (in Syria) might leave her with long-term disabilities or deformities”, said al-Naasan to Al Jazeera.

Notably, Syria’s rebel-held northwestern region was the hardest hit by the earthquakes last month where aid could not reach on time due to regional politics. A report by Al Jazeera cited healthcare officials in northwest Syria also said that out of the 12,000 people injured during the earthquakes, hundreds have been diagnosed with crush syndrome out of which at least 100 survivors were diagnosed with kidney failure.

Turkey-Syria earthquake aftermath: Survivors experience ‘crush syndrome’. What is it?

Saudi Arabia said on Monday (March 6) that it was depositing USD 5 billion in Turkey's central bank. This could be a major boost to Turkey which is attempting to contain inflation and aftereffects of the devastating earthquake. Presidential elections are around the corner in Turkey.

Ahmed Al Khateeb, the Saudi tourism minister and board chairman of the Saudi Fund for Development, signed an agreement with
Turkish central bank governor Sahap Kavcioglu "to make a significant $5 billion deposit", the Saudi government said in a statement.

"This deposit is a testament to the close cooperation and historical ties that exist between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Turkey and its brotherly people," the statement said.

The decision, which will shore up Turkey's foreign reserves and help it combat inflation, was made on the order of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, it said.

The move may signal warming of relation between the two countries post major strains in the aftermath of Jamal Khashoggi killing.

Khashoggi was a major critic of Saudi regime. Saudi agents killed and dismembered Khashoggi in Saudi consulate in Istanbul. His remains were never found. Turkey had angered Saufi Arabia by vigourously pursuing the case and providing lurid details to the world.

US intelligence officials believe the operation was "approved" by Prince Mohammed, though Saudi authorities deny this.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan previously said the "highest levels" of the Saudi government ordered the killing, although he has never blamed Prince Mohammed.

Erdogan has pushed hard to revive bilateral ties, a move analysts describe as largely driven by economic considerations.
