Japan issues tsunami warning for Izu Islands after 6.6 magnitude quake

Typhoon Koinu batters Taiwan with 'record-breaking winds'

A bad omen is waiting for Pakistan. Pakistan is at the epicentre of the next big earthquake. Dutch scientists made a startling prediction. As per the prediction, Pakistan will face one of the most devastating earthquakes in its history.

Devastating earthquake to jolt Pakistan soon? Dutch scientist makes shocking prediction

Just days after a Dutch scientist predicted a massive quake in Pakistan, a temblor rocked South Asia, but thousands of miles away in Nepal, and it was 6.2 on the Richter scale, making its tremors shake Indian capital Delhi and adjoining areas in northern region.

Frank Hoogerbeets, a researcher of the Solar System Geometry Survey (SSGEOS) — an organisation based in The Netherlands — on September 29, claimed that Pakistan would face a catastrophic earthquake.

He claimed to have detected an unusual increase in electric charge fluctuations along the fault lines in Balochistan’s Chaman area.

He even predicted the date of the earthquake, anywhere between October 1 and 3, adding that this would be “critical” for Pakistan.

“Planetary geometry is difficult to interpret with four conjunctions spread out over the next 10 days. As far as I can tell, 1-3 October will be more critical,” he said on social media X on Sept 29.

Earthquake in Nepal and India

On Wednesday, that is October 3, this is exactly what happened. A major earthquake occurred in the afternoon, but not in Pakistan.

Rather the tremors were recorded well over a thousand miles away in neighbouring Nepal and in northern parts of India.

Nepal was jolted by four earthquakes that occurred in a span of one hour, leaving a trail of damage in western Bajhang district, and at least 12 injured.

So far, no reports of casualties have emerged either in India or Nepal.

Prediction came right yet again

Notably, this is not the first time that Hoogerbeets made a bold earthquake prediction which turned out to be accurate.

He earlier claimed that tremors would devastate Turkey and Syria, which in fact came true in February this year which killed more than 50,000 people.

He estimated 'strong to major' seismic activity of 7.1 magnitude on March 16 in the Kermadec Islands and a 6.8 magnitude earthquake near the coast of Ecuador on March 18. Both his predictions were accurate.

Furthermore, he explained that he based his predictions on the analysis of the planetary geometry and pointing to lunar (red) heights in the SSGI graph. According to him, the planetary conjunction of Sun-Mercury-Jupiter converged with New Moon on March 21. Thus, he anticipated a 'mid-6 magnitude range' earthquake on March 22.

Dutch scientist’s prediction of earthquake on Oct 3 turns out be accurate, but…

The earthquakes in Nepal have resurrected an age-old fear: The fear of the great Himalayan quake. Scientists have for long predicted that an earthquake of over 8 magnitude will hit populous cities like Delhi, Lahore, Rawalpindi. Are India and Pakistan prepared for the tragedy? How long before Delhi crumbles?

Gravitas: Great Himalayan Earthquake: How long before Delhi crumbles?

Two back-to-back earthquakes of magnitude 6.2 and 4.6 on the Richter Scale struck Nepal on Tuesday (Oct 3) afternoon in less than half an hour, with tremors also being felt in large parts of the neighbouring country India, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported.

Hours later, two more earthquakes were recorded in Nepal, however of slightly lower magnitude at 3.06 pm and 3.19 pm.

According to the NCS, Nepal was first hit by an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 at 2.25 pm local time, occurring at a depth of 10 kilometres. Later at 2.51 pm, another tremor of magnitude 6.2 jolted the Himalayan country at a depth of 5 kilometres, the effects of which were also felt in northern India, including Uttarakhand and Delhi-NCR, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh states.

The epicentre of the quakes was registered around western Nepal's Bajhang district while in India, the epicentre was recorded 206 kilometres southeast of Joshimath in Uttarakhand and 284 km north of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh.

Interior ministry official Rama Acharya told Reuters that the quakes reportedly blocked a major highway in Nepal, an important route in the southern plains. According to local media reports, at least 12 people were injured, but no reports of casualties have come to the fore till now.

“In the Delhi region, the magnitude was 3...We have received responses from people that it was felt in Uttarakhand, Punjab, Delhi, Lucknow region, Jaipur region. A few people in Ahmedabad region are also telling us that they felt it there..." said National Centre for Seismology scientist Sanjay Kumar Prajapati, reports PTI news agency.

Survival and climate change: Scientists identify 'deadly' heat and humidity combo

A new study suggests that a massive earthquake — around magnitude 7.8 — rocked the Seattle area around 1,100 years ago when a series of hidden faults ruptured simultaneously. Something like that may happen again, and the implications would be catastrophic.

Earthquakes happen when the tectonic plates get stuck at their edges due to friction and when the stress on the edge overcomes the friction. Such movement releases energy in waves that travel through the earth's crust, which leads to the trembling that we feel.

According to the study, the quake led to landslides, upliftment of fault scraps, and a local tsunami, as a result of which a lot of local trees were drowned and buried across an area of 193 square miles.

Massive earthquake rocked Seattle area 1,100 years ago, it may happen again

In Thailand's picturesque Chonburi Province, the seawater of the Upper Gulf has an enchanting jade-green hue. However, the picturesque waters hide a dark secret—dense and slimy, it hides the stink of grass and decaying fish.

The green hue is a telltale sign pointing to a plankton bloom in progress. Here's why this is bad news.

Plankton, fish and more

While marine creatures like fish and whales rely on plankton as a food source, excessive blooms can deplete oxygen from the water, leading to the death of fish, shellfish, and other aquatic life.

This disruption sets off a chain reaction, wreaking havoc on the natural food chains and also fisheries in the area.

Marine scientist Tanuspong Pokavanich, as quoted by Reuters, says, "This is the first time that I've seen this much (plankton) since I was born, which means it is very severe this year."

Approximately a quarter of Thailand's Upper Gulf is presently affected, with roughly half appearing green, while the other portion nearer the shore has turned brown due to pollution and the presence of deceased plankton, notes the scientist.

Tanuspong explains the fate of the plankton: "The plankton in the water will (either) consume all the nutrients and thrive, or they will die due to a lack of light. Their carcasses will then sink to the seabed and decompose." This decomposition process contributes to low oxygen conditions in the water, further impacting marine life.

Fisheries impacted

Along this coastline, more than 260 mussel farming plots float, and over 80 per cent of them have already borne the brunt of the bloom, reports an official from the Chonburi Fisheries Association.

According to data from the Department of Fisheries in 2021, Chonburi typically produces 2,086 tonnes (4.6 million lbs) of mussels annually, valued at 26,655,000 Thai Baht ($1 million).

Suchat Buawat, a 47-year-old local fisherman with over 10 farming plots, points to the devastation: "The damage appears to be 100 percent. See, they just fall off when you shake it. He estimates that he has already borne losses that surpass 500,000 baht ($14,000).

The precise cause behind the emerald-hued seawater remains under investigation. Scientists like Tanuspong are reportedly exploring potential links to climate change and natural phenomena like El Niño.

The epicentre of the quake has been reported to be 11 kilometres below the Earth's surface, 124 kilometres west of Christchurch. Preliminary reports suggest there is no tsunami warning and no reports of damage on the New Zealand mainland.

According to the Geonet website, around 15,000 people reported to have felt the earthquake.

"Felt that one in Dunedin," said one user on X (formerly known as Twitter), while another added: "That was way too close for comfort! Peel Forest pretty close to epicentre- whole house shook, cupboard doors swung open, flashbacks to the ChCh quakes."

"There's no damage here, but I thought it was thunder for a start. The house lifted up for a bit," Sarah Hussey, a farmer close to the epicentre described the earthquake, saying it was the strongest she remembered.
