'Just about the worst': Cyclone Jasper brings heavy rains, flooding and crocodiles to Queensland. Watch!

Hidden beneath the lush forest coverage of Canada's Vancouver Island, researchers have uncovered a new geological threat—a 45-mile fault line known as the XEOLXELEK-Elk Lake fault (XELF).

Geologists, mineralogists, and Earth and ocean scientists, prompted by evidence of an ancient earthquake on the Saanich Peninsula between 4,700 and 2,300 years ago, now say that there is a tsunami risk this newly discovered fault poses.

"In the northern Cascadia forearc on the west coast of North America, high-resolution topography and geologic mapping show a [approximately] 2.3-m-high scarp across a [approximately] 14,000-year-old land surface 10 km [6.2 miles] north of downtown Victoria, British Columbia, Canada," revealed the international team of researchers from France, the US, and Canada.

Also Read | Sun releases strongest X-class solar flare since 2017, radio blackout reported over Americas

Finding the fault line initially proved challenging due to the dense forest but extensive research methodologies such as shallow geophysical surveys, historical image analysis, and remote sensing proved fruitful in gaining insights.

The team identified minerals in the rocks indicating changes in the magnetic field over time—a clear sign of rock formations being pulled apart or broken, strongly implying the presence of a fault line.

What are the implications?

If an earthquake were to occur along this fault line, it could unleash a tsunami with catastrophic consequences for approximately 400,000 inhabitants in the Greater Victoria region of Canada and potentially impact cities along the US West Coast, including Seattle, Bellingham, Olympia, and Tacoma, the findings of the report said.

"This newly identified fault, the XEOLXELEK-Elk Lake fault (XELF), crosses Saanich Peninsula within Greater Victoria and poses a hazard to the region's [approximately] 400,000 inhabitants," as per the researchers.

The fault, which runs northwest to southeast for about 45 miles, maybe a slip-dip fault, where rocks move vertically up and down against each other. According to the researchers, a seismic event at this fault line could trigger a local tsunami in the waters surrounding Greater Victoria.

The most recent earthquake from this fault line was seen several thousand years ago and had a magnitude of between 6.1 and 7.6. It is possible that the event caused a tsunami as well.

"Determining whether it produced recent large earthquakes is important for updating regional earthquake hazard models and increasing earthquake preparedness," the researchers said.

Also Read | Sun releases strongest X-class solar flare since 2017, radio blackout reported over Americas Finding the fault line initially proved challenging due to the dense forest but extensive research methodologies such as shallow geophysical surveys, historical image analysis, and remote sensing proved fruitful in gaining insights. Also Read | James Webb spots record-breaking small, rare kind of brown 'failed' star "This newly identified fault, the XEOLXELEK-Elk Lake fault (XELF), crosses Saanich Peninsula within Greater Victoria and poses a hazard to the region's [approximately] 400,000 inhabitants," as per the researchers. The fault, which runs northwest to southeast for about 45 miles, maybe a slip-dip fault, where rocks move vertically up and down against each other. According to the researchers, a seismic event at this fault line could trigger a local tsunami in the waters surrounding Greater Victoria. It is possible that the event caused a tsunami as well. "Determining whether it produced recent large earthquakes is important for updating regional earthquake hazard models and increasing earthquake preparedness," the researchers said.
During the 1800s, North America's continental interior faced some of the most deadly earthquakes ever recorded in US history. Nearly two hundred years later, a study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth indicates that the central and eastern United States might still be encountering aftershocks stemming from those historical seismic events.

These historical events are crucial, as larger earthquakes tend to generate more aftershocks.

Unlike tectonically active areas near plate boundaries, the stable continental interior of North America experiences rare seismic events. This rarity prompts questions about the sources of modern seismicity in these regions.

Devastating earthquakes that struck in the 1800s are triggering aftershocks today, scientists say

Authorities in Iceland on Friday (Nov 10) declared a state of emergency after a series of powerful earthquakes rocked the country's southwestern Reykjanes peninsula. Experts believe that the recent quakes could be a precursor to a volcanic eruption.

Earthquakes from 1800s are triggering aftershocks: Scientists

Iceland is preparing for a possible volcanic eruption after the nation was rattled by a series of earthquakes which has since prompted officials to declare a state of emergency. Delhi shakes again as 2.6 earthquake jolts amid Diwali festivities, third in a week

Nepal has grappled with a series of devastating earthquakes over the past decade. It all began with the 7.8 magnitude quake in 2015, and since then, Nepal has experienced frequent tumblers that often reverberate across Northern India.

The most recent earthquake struck the Himalayan nation on November 3, registering a magnitude of 5.6, coming just two days after a 4.0 magnitude one. These seismic activities also sent shockwaves across Northern India.

Why is this happening?

Renowned geologist Dr CP Rajendran, an adjunct Professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies in Bengaluru, said that since the 2015 earthquake, the Himalayan region has been under immense pressure. "This pressure results from the interaction of two tectonic plates: the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate."

The two plates are constantly pushing against each other and over time, stress accumulates and periodically releases as earthquakes, as was the case with the recent Nepal earthquake, he told WION.

However, this stress accumulation varies across the Himalayan region, with each area having its unique characteristics. In some regions, stress accumulates to such an extent that when released in the form of an earthquake, it places stress on the other part.

Due to the ongoing tectonic activity in Nepal since 2015, the entire region has become increasingly unstable. Furthermore, certain areas experience compounded stress due to past earthquakes.

Are high-rise buildings in Delhi NCR under threat?

The repercussions of these Himalayan earthquakes are felt in the Gangetic alluvial plains, including areas like Delhi NCR, Lucknow, Patna, Kanpur, and Varanasi. The seismic waves travel southward from the Himalayas towards this belt.

"If you drill the ground, you will see a huge pile-up of sediments transported by rivers. So, when the energy released through an earthquake is propagated towards the south, which also forms the Delhi NCR area, it gets amplified because these places are sitting on soft sediments," notes Dr Rajendran.

As a result, residents in Delhi NCR often experience more pronounced shaking, with this effect significantly magnified in high-rise buildings.

Dr Rajendran said that in the realm of earthquake literature, a common saying is "Earthquakes don't kill, but buildings do."

The primary source of damage is buildings, particularly in urban areas. Those residing in forested or open regions face fewer risks. The real danger emerges when people are within structures that might collapse.

To mitigate the impact of earthquakes, it's essential to construct buildings that can "effectively withstand tremors" and seismic activities, he adds.

Why do Nepal quakes shake north India? Delhi NCR buildings under threat?

China on Tuesday published its long-awaited methane reduction plan it had committed to back in 2021.

After two years of failing to materialise, the release of this plan signals that Beijing is moving closer to a new climate agreement with the United States.

How China plans to reduce methane

China, as per Reuters, is by far the biggest producer of climate-warming methane with over 14 per cent of global emissions. However, Tuesday's long-awaited plan does not include any firm targets. Instead, it proposes goals for the reuse of methane as fuel.

Also read | Forget 'glass ceiling,' new study finds women likely to be set up to fall off of 'glass cliff'

The plan published by China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment pledges that the nation will strive to curb "flaring," or burning off emissions, at oil and gas wells. It also said that China would target methane leaks at coal mines to be closed up.

Furthermore, the nation has vowed to promote methane control in agriculture and to bolster methane control from waste.

Experts call the plan disappointing

Political analysts are less than enthusiastic about the plan. At COP26 in Glasgow, China had pledged to cooperate with the US on measuring and reducing methane. However, its newly released strategy leaves much to be desired.

Yan Qin, lead carbon analyst at Refinitiv, a part of LSEG, a UK-based company that provides global financial market data, said the objectives mentioned in China's plan are "too ambiguous".

"The objectives mentioned in the plan are too ambiguous, and contain mainly descriptive text, no specific targets in methane emissions reduction."

However, others see the release of the plan as a "golden opportunity" which could mean that a new China climate agreement was on the horizon, reports The Guardian. Leaders of the two nations are expected to meet at the APEC summit in San Francisco next week.

At the Glasgow climate summit, the two nations had agreed to establish a working group on climate action.

Talking to Reuters, Climate analyst Li Shuo, the incoming director of the China Climate Hub at the Asia Society, commented that the plan's release potentially "paves the way" for a joint statement from the world's two largest greenhouse gas emitters.

Why methane reduction is important

Methane gas is a key emission responsible for global warming and climate change, which has a warming potential of 100 times that of carbon dioxide. Tackling methane is seen as the key to controlling climate change in the short term.

Also read | 'Beam me up, Scotty': Scientists to use sci-fi beam to get rid of real space junk However, others see the release of the plan as a "golden opportunity" which could mean that a new China climate agreement was on the horizon, reports The Guardian. Why methane reduction is important Methane gas is a key emission responsible for global warming and climate change, which has a warming potential of 100 times that of carbon dioxide. Tackling methane is seen as the key to controlling climate change in the short term. (With inputs from agencies)

Delhi, and its neighbouring areas experienced strong tremors on November 6 at approximately 4:15 pm, making it the fourth such occurrence in Delhi within a single month, raising questions about the capital's vulnerability to earthquakes.

When we ask the question "why," there are numerous factors that render the capital region prone to seismic activity. These factors encompass India's seismic zoning, the geological elements positioning Delhi within Zone IV, its susceptibility to earthquakes due to its proximity to the Himalayan ranges, the distinctive settlement patterns that amplify risk, and the potential ramifications of a significant earthquake in the region. Let's take a deeper look.

Seismic zoning in India

A fundamental understanding of Delhi's seismic vulnerability requires insight into India's seismic zoning. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) classifies India into four primary seismic zones:

Zone V (most active): Encompassing 11 per cent of India.

Zone IV: Covering 18 per cent of the nation's territory.

Zone III: Extending over 30 per cent of the landmass.

Zone II (least active): Occupying a significant 41 per cent of India.

Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) fall under Zone IV, which signifies a high seismic risk zone, indicating a higher likelihood of experiencing moderate to high-intensity earthquakes.

Also read | Delhi's air 'critical', with many NCR areas recording AQI at 999, CM holds high-level meeting

Delhi's in zone IV: Geological factors

The placement of Delhi in Zone IV is primarily attributed to its geographical location and the geological activities in the region.

Delhi is situated in close proximity to the Himalayan ranges, approximately 200-300 kilometres away.

The Himalayas, one of the world's youngest mountain ranges, formed due to the continual collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

This perpetual tectonic activity leads to regular tremors, making the region a hotspot for natural calamities such as earthquakes and landslides.

Earthquakes are predominantly triggered by the movement of tectonic plates in the uppermost layer of the Earth's crust.

Consequently, the more activity in this layer, the higher the likelihood of an earthquake occurring. Although Delhi is not directly situated on a major fault line, its location in a seismically active region can be attributed to its proximity to the Himalayas.

This proximity to the Himalayan tectonic plate boundary, where the Indian plate collides with the Eurasian plate, is the primary reason for the heightened seismic risk in the region.

Proximity to the Himalayas

The Himalayan region, including Nepal, Uttarakhand, and adjoining areas, is particularly susceptible to devastating earthquakes, often surpassing 8.5 on the Richter Scale.

This proximity to the Himalayas is a significant factor in why Delhi is categorized under Zone IV, denoting a high-risk zone, while the Himalayan region itself falls under Zone V, signifying the highest risk of damaging earthquakes.

Unique settlement pattern

In addition to geological factors, the unique settlement pattern of Delhi and the NCR contributes to the region's vulnerability.

The area is characterised by extensive high-rise constructions and sprawling informal settlements.

Notably, areas along the banks of the Yamuna and Hindon rivers, housing numerous multi-story buildings, are situated in the most seismic-prone zones.

Sections of Old Delhi and unauthorised colonies along the riverbanks further compound the vulnerability.

What could be the potential consequence of a major earthquake in Delhi?

Experts have issued warnings about the potential for a significant earthquake in the region in the future. The consequences of such an event could be severe, given the densely populated urban area, ageing infrastructure, and inadequate building standards in some parts of the national capital.

Delhi's dense and rapidly growing urban landscape presents a complex challenge for disaster preparedness. In the event of a substantial earthquake, the city's infrastructure, housing, and transportation networks could be severely affected. The potential for casualties and extensive damage to property is a cause for concern.

It is also important to acknowledge that earthquakes are complex, unpredictable natural events.

While experts can assess the seismic hazard in a region and provide warnings and recommendations, the precise timing and magnitude of future earthquakes remain uncertain.

The accurate prediction of earthquakes remains a perennial challenge in the field of seismology.

What is the government doing?

Recognising the seismic risk, the government and local authorities have been working diligently to enhance earthquake preparedness.

Their efforts include updating building codes to ensure that new constructions are earthquake-resistant, retrofitting critical infrastructure to withstand seismic shocks, and raising awareness among the population about earthquake safety measures.

Additionally, emergency response plans are in place to manage any potential disaster.

How is Nepal dealing with the devastation of the Friday earthquake?

Officials in Nepal have recorded 153 deaths so far from the Friday (Nov 5) earthquake.

They also expressed concerns that the death toll from the earthquake in Jajarkot might rise, as they were unable to establish contact in the hilly area near the epicentre.

The epicentre was located approximately 500 km (300 miles) west of the capital, Kathmandu, where tremors were also felt. Jajarkot district, with a population of 190,000, comprises villages scattered in remote hills.

The search and rescue efforts were hindered by landslides triggered by the earthquake, blocking the roads leading to the affected areas, according to a Nepal police officer.

Since the earthquake, numerous buildings in Jajarkot and the neighbouring Rukum West district have either collapsed or developed severe cracks, rendering them uninhabitable. Survivors reported hearing the loud noises of buildings collapsing shortly after the earthquake struck, as reported by PTI.

Local media footage show the facades of multi-storied brick houses in ruins, with substantial pieces of furniture scattered about. Videos showed people evacuating buildings and running into the streets.

This earthquake marked the deadliest since the devastating events of 2015 when approximately 9,000 people lost their lives in two earthquakes in Nepal. Those earthquakes reduced entire towns, centuries-old temples, and historic sites to rubble, resulting in the destruction of more than a million houses and incurring an economic cost of $6 billion.
