Nearly 2,000 earthquakes hit a spot off the coast of Canada in a single day, which as per scientists was a hint that new oceanic crust is likely to be created through deep sea magmatic rupture. The quakes aren't any threat to people. Scientists say the quakes are interesting scientifically because they can reveal details about how the ocean floor pulls apart and new crust forms. Watch in for more details!

What is the optimal temperature for life? A systematic review of published research has now identified that 20°C is the comfortable temperature that allows life to thrive on Earth. Here's why.

Why 20°C?

As per a team of specialists from institutes around the globe — Norway, Tasmania, Canada, Scotland, Germany, Hong Kong and Taiwan — 20°C is comfortable for humans and other species. Anything warmer than that affects productivity and efficiency, because releasing heat requires energy.

This is also true for various animals, plants, and microbes living in air and water.

It was earlier assumed that the number of marine species peaks at the warm waters of the equator. However, a research group from New Zealand recently observed that this was not true. Rather, the number of species dipped, and this dip as per an article in The Conversation, "has been getting deeper since the last ice age about 20,000 years ago."

This is because of global ocean warming.

Not only this, researchers found that even though many species have evolved to live at temperatures lower or higher than 20°C, fossil records also show that extinctions were lower at around this temperature.

Climate change

With climate change driving global warming, researchers said, "Our findings suggest that the pace of climate change is too fast for new species to evolve to replace those lost within the lowest latitudes."

This data is based on the systematic review of a total of 54 papers published in peer-reviewed journals.

As per the researchers, temperatures higher than 20°C deplete genetic diversity; marine and freshwater species' tolerance of low oxygen; marine pelagic (open water living) and benthic (seabed living) algal productivity and fish predation rates on bait; and global species richness in pelagic fishes, plankton, benthic invertebrates and fossil molluscs.

Here, thermal breadth refers to the temperature range at which survival was equal to or above 50 per cent of its peak.

Scientists argue that while many marine species still may be able to adapt to global warming by simply shifting their geographic distribution, land species could suffer. This is because a shift in their geographical distributions won't be easy "due to landscapes modified by cities, farming and other human infrastructures."

On a day when Turkiye was commemorating the anniversary of an earthquake in its south that killed more than 53,000 people last year, At least one person was killed and five others wounded in a terror attack in front of Istanbul's central courthouse. The two assailants, a man and a woman, were killed in the gun battle with the security officials. They are believed to be associated with a leftist "terrorist" organization which has staged attacks in Turkiye since the 1980s.Turkiye is gradually emerging from a decade-long violent spell, marked by repeated bombings and other attacks linked to Jihadist fighters and Kurdish militants. This attack, targeting a police check point near a courthouse, shattered that sense of security, rendering the nation vulnerable. Mohammed Saleh brings you the details.

Is the far-left group, DHKP-C, staging a comeback in Turkiye?

The mean ice coverage across the United States's five Great Lakes in January 2024 was only 6 per cent, reveals a new report. This makes last month one of the least icy Januarys in the past 50 years, as per the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

As per Professor Sapna Sharma, a specialist in lake environmental stressors at York University in Toronto, "The Great Lakes are now experiencing much lower ice cover, but in many regions, no ice at all. Large and deep lakes, including bays in Lakes Michigan and Superior, are most likely to permanently lose ice cover as soon as the 2060s if greenhouse gas emissions are not mitigated."

These lakes—Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario—lie along or near the US-Canada border, and are linked by a series of smaller lakes and rivers covering a total surface area of 95,000 square miles, which just so happens to be the largest freshwater system globally.

Although some fluctuation in ice cover from year to year is typical, scientists, as per The Guardian, assert that global warming is fuelling ice melt and increasing water temperatures. They warn that this trend could worsen without prompt action.

Professor Sapna Sharma revealed that "in direct response to warming air temperatures, we are observing rapid ice loss and warming summer water temperatures".

A strong earthquake hit Hawaii on Friday, US seismologists said, but there was no danger of a tsunami.

The 5.7-magnitude quake struck near Pahala on the main island of Hawaii, with its epicenter located around 37 kilometers (23 miles) below the Earth's surface, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake was felt all over the main island, according to a website on which people tell the USGS what they experienced.

The agency said the likelihood of fatalities or damage was low.

Hawaii is a seismically active part of the planet despite being in the middle of a huge tectonic plate.

It is home to six active volcanoes including Kilauea, which regularly wows helicopter-riding tourists who come to see its red-hot shows on Hawaii's Big Island.

It is also the location of Mauna Loa, the world's biggest volcano, which put on a weeks-long show in 2022 as it erupted for the first time in four decades, with lava fountains 60 meters (200 feet) high that sent rivers of molten rock down its flanks.

January is more than just the month for New Year resolutions and fresh starts. It also marks a growing movement - Veganuary - that is slowly but steadily gaining momentum.

What is Veganuary?

Veganuary is a global campaign that encourages individuals to embrace a plant-based lifestyle, if not forever, at least for the month of January.

The word veganuary is born from the fusion of "vegan" and "January," and contrary to what many of us may think, it is not just a dietary trend; it's a conscientious awakening.

As Shreya Swaminath, Director of Farm Animal Protection at Humane Society International/India puts it, "There is an urgent need to transform our food systems, which are using progressively more inhumane and carbon-intensive methods of raising animals to meet consumer demand."

In an exclusive conversation with WION, Swaminath emphasised that swapping animal proteins with plant-based foods even just once a week can make a tremendous change.

"The simple act of swapping animal proteins with plant-based foods even once a week can significantly reduce animal suffering and greenhouse gas emissions. The power to create change is in each of our hands - rather on each of our plates!," she said.

Meat and environment

Over the years, multiple studies and research have proved that eating meat is bad for the environment. In July, a study published in the journal Food showed that a vegan diet can help cut down climate-heating emissions, water pollution and land use by 75 per cent. This is compared to diets that have more than 100 grams of meat a day.

Shikha Jain, Manager of Public Outreach at Humane Society International/India, adds a broader perspective to the vegan movement. She challenges the notion of veganism as merely a dietary choice, asserting, "It's time to change our perception towards veganism as just another dietary practice. It is, in fact, a wholesome lifestyle that can impact a wider circle than merely our health."

Jain highlights the far-reaching consequences of animal farming, affecting not only public health but also the environment, animal welfare, food security, and the spread of infectious diseases.

The practice is not only inhumane to animals but also counterproductive to the sustainability of our future - the human existence."

"We only need to adopt alternative practices to our consumption," she suggests.

Veganism has its many benefits, but it can be a difficult and even expensive dietary regimen. For those looking to cut down their carbon footprint, another alternative is to just reduce their meat consumption. As per the study mentioned above, low meat diets of less than 50g a day also have a significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution and land use.

As of Monday (Jan 8), there were nearly 30,000 people living in around 400 government shelters which are struggling to provide adequate food, water and heating. Japan hit by another 6.0-magnitude earthquake as death toll from New Year’s Day quake crosses 200-mark

The yen ended its worst week against the U.S. Dollar in sixteen months as the bank of Japan's likely decision to abandon negative rates was tempered by the economic effects of a strong earthquake. Following the release of important U.S. Labour and ism services data, the currency fluctuated sharply, falling as much as 0.9% against the dollar on Friday before closing the day essentially unchanged.

Japan Earthquake: Yen closes worst week since 2022

It has been a week since a major earthquake destroyed roads and infrastructure in Japan’s Nishiaraya village. However, residents said on Monday that they’re still living in uncertainty.

The death toll from a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in Japan on New Year’s Day has risen to 161, reported AFP news agency citing local authorities on Monday (Jan 8). The number of unaccounted people more than tripled from 103 to 323, it said citing a list published by local authorities.

Rescue efforts underway

Earlier on Monday it had been reported that the number of those missing had fallen to 103 from 195. However, the number tripled after Wajima, one of the worst-hit places after the January 1 earthquake, raised the number of people unaccounted for from 31 to 281, reported AFP.

According to local officials, snow has complicated rescue efforts after the earthquake, the shockwaves from which toppled buildings, sparked a major fire and triggered tsunami waves over a metre high.

Japan has since deployed thousands of rescue workers across the country. However, their efforts have been hampered by an estimated 1,000 landslides following the earthquake. To make matters worse, the region has also been blanketed in snow in the last two days.

The regional government has warned that continuous rain would lead to more landslides and heavy snow could cause more buildings to collapse under its weight.

The drop in temperature might also worsen conditions for more than 28,800 people in 404 government shelters.

Death toll in Japan earthquake reaches 126 as harsh weather conditions hamper rescue efforts

Japan earthquake death toll rises to 94, with 222 missing. Thousands of rescuers from all over Japan have been battling aftershocks and blocked roads.

Japan Earthquake: Rescuers race against time to find survivors, death toll rises to 94

Rescuers are racing against time to find Japan quake survivors. However, incessant rainfall has made these operations extremely difficult.

Japan's deadliest quake: Day 6 of rescue operations

Japan's massive earthquake which shook the country on Monday at 4:10 pm local time and had a magnitude of 7.5 was immediately registered on the seismometers present in the near vicinity. It was also recorded within minutes across the world, which included North Carolina, as per a media report.

Earthquakes take place with an instant release of strain energy at the hypocentre below the surface of the Earth and are first felt at the epicenter which is directly above them. The quake that occurred on Monday was more than 6 miles beneath the Sea of Japan and close to the town of Suzu on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture.

The energy released during an earthquake travels outward in all directions in the form of waves – similar to ripples in a pond, along the surface of the Earth and through its core.

Waves travelled throughout the world at different motions

Primary (P) waves are said to travel faster and reach the seismometers first while the rocks are compressed horizontally. Shear (S) waves are the next ones to reach which deliver destructive up and down motion.

Seismometers are able to record both horizontal and vertical motion, however, the charts which are prepared include mostly destructive vertical components.

According to a sampling of seismometers which has been collected by the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), the earthquake was registered on a seismograph located in northern Alaska nearly nine minutes after it struck Japan.

After 12 minutes, the first seismic wave reached Casper, Wyoming and the waves then reached Pittsboro 14 minutes later at 2:24 a.m. EST.

However, similar to waves which move outward after a pebble is tossed in a pond, seismic waves remain the strongest near the source. The speed of ripples, after getting recorded in Japan, reduced by a factor of several thousand times, after it reached North Carolina.

After the first shock from the earthquake, the motion continues along the surface as well as through the core of the Earth. The seismometer in Pittsboro, as well as in other places across the world, continued recording this motion for many hours after the initial shock was felt.
