Japan on Thursday ended its call for higher-than-usual risks of a major earthquake, one week after a strong tremor on the edge of the Nankai Trough seabed zone caused the government to issue its first-ever megaquake advisory.

Citizens can now return to normal life as no abnormalities were observed in the seismic activity of the Nankai Trough located along Japan's Pacific coast in the past week, said Yoshifumi Matsumura, the state minister for disaster management.

A Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) expert panel on Aug. 8 released an advisory that there was a "relatively higher chance" of a Nankai Trough megaquake as powerful as magnitude 9, after a magnitude-7.1 quake hit the country's southwest.

Earthquake Today: 7.4-magnitude earthquake strikes Northern Chile

In a new study, researchers from the Pompeii Archaeological Park and the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisicae Vulcanologia (INGV) found that the eruption of Vesuvius became more deadly because of another natural disaster and not an earthquake.

In a new study, researchers from the Pompeii Archaeological Park and the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisicae Vulcanologia (INGV) found that the eruption of Vesuvius became more deadly because of another natural disaster and not an earthquake. The collaborative study has emphasised the effects of seismicity related to the 79 CE eruption. This is the first study which has been handling the complex task of understanding the effects of co-occurring earthquakes. The situation appears tricky because of the possibility of volcanic and seismic effects taking place concurrently or in quick succession, which means volcanic effects are likely to overshadow effects caused by earthquakes and vice versa. "These complexities are like a jigsaw puzzle in which all the pieces must fit together to unravel the complete picture," said Dr Domenico Sparice, who is a volcanologist at INGV-Osservatorio Vesuviano and first author of the Frontiers in Earth Science study. "We proved that seismicity during the eruption played a significant role in the destruction of Pompeii and, possibly, influenced the choices of the Pompeiians who faced an inevitable death," he said. Also Read: Ancient Herculaneum beach buried by Mount Vesuvius 2,000 years ago reopened after extensive restoration "Correctly recognising the cause-effect relationship is essential to reconstruct the interplay between volcanic and seismic phenomena, and their effects on buildings and humans," said co-author Dr. Fabrizio Galadini, who is a geologist and senior researcher at INGV. Two skeletons speak about how Pompeii crumbled The researchers, amid excavations in the "Casa dei Pittori al Lavoro", noticed that something was wrong regarding the collapsed buildings. "We found peculiar characteristics that were inconsistent with the effects of volcanic phenomena described in the volcanological literature devoted to Pompeii. There had to be a different explanation," co-author Dr. Mauro Di Vito, who is a volcanologist and director of INGV-Osservatorio Vesuviano said. The researchers discovered two skeletons with trauma injuries and severe fractures and decided to find out what was the reason behind it. Small rock and ash particles had rained on the city for 18 hours and when the eruption started, the inhabitants who had survived were likely to have believed that they were safe in their shelter till strong earthquakes started. Watch: Scientists find underground caves on moon "The people who did not flee their shelters were possibly overwhelmed by earthquake-induced collapses of already overburdened buildings. This was the fate of the two individuals we recovered," said co-author Dr. Valeria Amoretti, an anthropologist who heads the Applied Research Laboratory of Pompeii Archaeological Park. "New insight into the destruction of Pompeii gets us very close to the experience of the people who lived here 2,000 years ago. The choices they made as well as the dynamics of the events, which remain a focus of our research, decided over life and death in the last hours of the city's existence," concluded co-author Dr. Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park. Beryl on Monday (Jul 8) brought to Texas howling winds and torrential rains that killed at least three people and left 2.7 million houses without power. Along with this, the tropical storm caused extensive flooding on highways, delayed more than 1,300 flights and caused the closure of schools and major oil ports.

The season's earliest category 5 hurricane on record, Beryl, has weakened to a tropical storm after hitting the coastal Texas town of Matagorda with all the might of a Category 1 hurricane.

What is a Category 1 hurricane?

A hurricane, as per the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, is considered a Category 1 if it sustains winds between 74 (119 km/h) and 95 miles per hour (152.89 km/h).

While Category 1 hurricanes are not considered "major hurricanes" until they reach Category 3, they are still very dangerous and can bring with them widespread destruction.

Beryl's devastation

In Texas, Beryl claimed the lives of three. As per the news agency Reuters, a 53-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman were killed in two separate incidents in the Houston area when trees fell on their homes.

A third individual, a City of Houston employee, drowned in an underpass while travelling to work.

Previously, in Mexico and the Caribbean, the storm killed 11 people, Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick told reporters.

"For those of you in northeast Texas, be aware. You will have tropical storm winds, maybe as late as midnight or 1 am. You will have flooding, you will have rain, and you need to stay off the roads," he warned.

While state officials are yet to assess the damage wrought by storm Beryl, Mayor John Whitmire told reporters that due to the hurricane, floodwaters across most of Houston have exceeded 10 inches (25.4 centimetres).

"We're literally getting calls across Houston right now asking for first responders to come rescue individuals in desperate life safety conditions," he said.

Furthermore, more than 1,300 flights were cancelled, as officials ordered evacuations in some beach towns.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo instructed the government to implement "thorough" measures in response to the earthquake, with local reports saying that noise and shaking were also experienced in the cities of Sejong, Daejeon and Cheonan.

Buan resident Yang Seo-yeon told AFP she heard a "thunderous roar" while she was getting ready to go to work in the morning.

"It sounded as if I was in the middle of a huge construction site. Then my house started shaking."

No significant damage had been reported as of Wednesday morning, according to authorities.

Unlike neighbouring Japan, the Korean peninsula rarely experiences significant quakes.

The country's most powerful quake to date was a 5.8-magnitude tremor that struck Gyeongju, also in the southeast, in September 2016.

A strong magnitude 5.9 earthquake on Monday shook the area of central Japan that was hit by a devastating jolt in January, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said, but there was no threat of a tsunami.

Three houses collapsed but there were no reports of deaths or injuries, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said after the shallow quake struck the Noto Peninsula at 6:31 am (2131 GMT Sunday).

Public broadcaster NHK showed footage of at least one home thrown askew with badly damaged walls and the tiled roof of part of the building having crashed to the ground.

No abnormalities were detected at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa or Shika nuclear plants in the region on the Sea of Japan coast, Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority said.

"The area has been seismically active for more than three years, including the magnitude 7.6 earthquake on January 1 this year. That is expected to continue for the foreseeable future, so please continue to exercise caution," the JMA said.

The agency also warned of landslides and falling rocks in the region, especially after rain or further quakes.

Monday's jolt triggered smartphone warning alarms and was followed by several smaller aftershocks.

On New Year's Day, at least 260 people died after a massive earthquake hit the peninsula, including 30 "quake-linked" deaths as well as those killed directly in the disaster.

The January 1 quake and its aftershocks toppled buildings, caused fires and knocked out infrastructure at a time when families were celebrating the new year.

The JMA said Monday's quake was related to the January one, with a similar epicentre and seismic mechanism.

Recent years have seen major oil companies making big climate pledges. However, a new report from Oil Change International suggests these are nothing but empty promises.

The report examined climate plans from the eight largest US and European-based oil and gas producers and found that none of them were in line with limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Which companies did the report evaluate?

BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Eni, Equinor, ExxonMobil, Shell, and TotalEnergies are the companies.

For its report, Oil Change International assessed the companies' plans on 10 criteria. It found that all eight big oil companies ranked as "grossly insufficient" or "insufficient" on nearly all criteria, reports The Guardian.

US firms Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and ExxonMobil were the "worst of the worst" and ranked "grossly insufficient" on all 10 of the criteria.

In a statement, Allie Rosenbluth, US programme manager at Oil Change International, said, "American fossil-fuel corporations are the worst of the worst."

The report has been endorsed by over 100 climate groups internationally and marks the fourth annual "Big Oil Reality Check" from Oil Change International.

Increasing global warming

In a statement, David Tong, co-author of the analysis, and global industry campaign manager at Oil Change International, said: "There is no evidence that big oil and gas companies are acting seriously to be part of the energy transition."

What more? The report also found that instead of limiting global warming, these companies' current oil and gas extraction plans could actually lead to more than 2.4°C of global temperature rise.

As per the report, the eight oil companies alone are on track to use 30 per cent of the world's remaining global carbon budget — to keep the global average temperature rise to 1.5C.

The report criticised the companies for their lack of ambition to curb fossil fuel exploration and production. None have plans to stop fossil fuel exploration or halt new extraction projects. In fact, six of the eight companies have explicit goals to increase oil and gas production.

Additionally, the report found that the companies' methods to curb greenhouse gas emissions lack integrity. None set comprehensive targets to rapidly and consistently curb emissions, and all plan to rely on methods like carbon capture and storage, which do not yet exist at scale, and carbon offsetting.

All eight firms also failed to "meet basic criteria for just transition plans for workers and communities where they operate," and none met "basic" human rights criteria.

‘Reality Check’: Damning report finds big oil firms’ climate plans could increase global warming by 2.4°C

Florida no longer considers Climate Change a priority. Defying "Radical green zealots," Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Wednesday (May 15) signed a new legislation that will see Climate Change disappear from state statutes.

The legislation, which is set to take effect from July 1, will also see a ban on power-generating wind turbines offshore or near the state's lengthy coastline.

Critics of the legislation, as per the news agency AP, say that the measure ignores the reality of climate change threats in Florida. This includes projections of rising seas, extreme heat and flooding, and increasingly severe storms.

The new Florida legislation

Starting July 1, the measure, as per a news release from the Florida governor's office, would also boost expansion of natural gas, reduce regulations on gas pipelines in the state and increase protections against bans on gas appliances such as stoves.

The legislation will erase several instances of the word "climate change" from state statutes. Additionally, it removes over 50 lines specifically related to addressing the matter of climate change from the state law, which were enacted in 2008 during the tenure of the-then Republican Governor Charlie Crist.

The sections of the existing law that will be erased include a provision for addressing the "potential of global climate change" as a state energy policy, and a provision for the state to "play a leading role in developing and implementing energy management programs aimed at promoting energy conservation, energy security, and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions."

It also removes provisions mandating that state agencies shall hold meetings and conferences only in hotels or conference facilities that have received the "Green Lodging" designation from the Department of Environmental Protection "for best practices in water, energy, and waste efficiency standards, unless the responsible state agency head makes a determination that no other viable alternative exists."

As per a legislative analysis of the bill as published on the Florida Gov website, the priority is to ensure "an adequate, reliable and cost-effective supply of energy for the state in a manner that promotes the health and welfare of the public and economic growth".

'Climate change isn't real': Ron DeSantis erases mentions of climate change from Florida law

Climate Change can threaten our homes but as per a new research, extreme weather can also harm our brain health, making disorders like anxiety and depression worse.

Researchers from University College London, as per a study published in Lancet Neurology, have found a concerning link between environmental changes and neurological health.

What is the correlation?

Researchers analysed the impact of extreme weather on 19 nervous system conditions, including stroke, Alzheimer’s, meningitis, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. They also looked at psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia.

They discovered that there was a "clear evidence for an impact of the climate on some brain conditions, especially stroke and infections of the nervous system".

"The climatic variation that was shown to have an effect on brain diseases included extremes of temperature, both low and high, and greater temperature variation throughout the course of day, especially when these measures were seasonally unusual," said Professor Sanjay Sisodiya, director of genomics at University College London's epilepsy society.

He said that nighttime temperatures mean hotter nights, which can disrupt sleep. This is "particularly important" as hotter temperature and heatwaves mean billions of people globally are sleeping through higher than normal temperatures.

They also observed an increase in hospital admissions, disability, and stroke due to higher temperatures or heatwaves.

Hottest 12 months

The research comes as Asia faces dangerous heatwaves attributed to climate crisis.

Recently, the European Union's climate change monitoring service Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) in its monthly report said that April 2024 was once again the hottest April on record. Every month for the past 11 months, the world has set a new temperature record.

As per C3S, including April, Earth's average temperature was the highest on record for a 12-month period, with temperatures around 1.61 degrees Celsius above the average in the 1850-1900 pre-industrial period.

A strong earthquake shook the border of Mexico and Guatemala early Sunday, driving frightened residents into the streets.

The temblor struck just before 6 am near the Mexican border town of Suchiate, where a river by the same name divides the two countries. The epicentre was just off the Pacific coast, 10 miles (16 kilometres) west-southwest of Brisas Barra de Suchiate where the river empties into the sea.

The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.4, according to the US Geological Survey and a depth of 47 miles (75 kilometres).

In Mexico, there were no immediate reports of damage, but more mountainous, remote parts of the border are prone to landslides.

Earthquakes are caused by a sudden movement along faults within the Earth, but new research by MIT scientists suggests that heavy snowfall and rain could play a role play in setting off tremors.

The study, published on Wednesday (May 8) in the journal Science Advances, indicates a potential link between heavy snowfall on Japan's Noto Peninsula and thousands of quakes measured there since late 2020.

William Frank, who is the study author and an assistant professor in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS), said, "We see that snowfall and other environmental loading at the surface impacts the stress state underground, and the timing of intense precipitation events is well-correlated with the start of this earthquake swarm."

"So, climate obviously has an impact on the response of the solid earth, and part of that response is earthquakes," he added.

On January 1 this year, the west coast of Japan was struck by a massive magnitude-7.6 earthquake near the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture. It was the strongest quake to hit the area in over a century. The quake killed 213 people and left 26,000 in emergency shelters.

The satellite images later revealed that the powerful quake even shifted its coastline by 800 kilometres. Since the initial earthquake, the Noto peninsula, which is located about 190 miles northwest of Tokyo on the Sea of Japan, experienced nearly 600 aftershocks.

Hundreds of small earthquakes have shaken up the Noto Peninsula since late 2020. The researchers analysed thousands of earthquakes that hit the peninsula. It found that the number of earthquakes in the area increased significantly, with hundreds being recorded daily, after a big snowfall in 2021.

In the latest study, researchers focused on a series of earthquakes on the Noto Peninsula. The findings revealed that the seismic activity in the region is unexpectedly linked to changes in subterranean pressure, which are controlled by seasonal patterns of snowfall and rainfall.

The researchers believe that this new connection between earthquakes and climate may not be limited only to Japan and they also think that the climate's influence on earthquakes could be even bigger with global warming and rise in temperature.

Frank added, "If we're going into a climate that's changing, with more extreme precipitation events, and we expect a redistribution of water in the atmosphere, oceans, and continents, that will change how the Earth's crust is loaded. That will have an impact for sure, and it's a link we could further explore."

Certain weather events, like heavy snowfall and rain, might trigger earthquakes: Study

In continuation of a damning 11-month trend, last month (April) was once again the hottest April on record. Every month for the past 11 months, the world has set a new temperature record.

On Wednesday (May 8), the European Union's climate change monitoring service in its monthly bulletin said that each month since June 2023 has ranked as the planet's hottest on record. This is in comparison to the months in previous years.

Highest on record

As per the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), including April, Earth's average temperature was the highest on record for a 12-month period.

By how much? 1.61 degrees Celsius above the average in the 1850-1900 pre-industrial period.

The dataset maintained by C3S contains historical information dating back to as early as 1940. To validate their findings, scientists also compared this record with other available data and established that last month was the hottest April on record, surpassing any previous April temperatures during the pre-industrial period.

What is behind this rise in temperatures?

Greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels have been identified as the main culprit behind climate change.

Recent months also saw El Niño, a natural phenomenon which warms the surface waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean, raising temperatures.

The extremes, including months of record-breaking sea surface temperatures, have led scientists to question whether human activities have now triggered a tipping point in the planet's climate system.

"I think many scientists have asked the question whether there could be a shift in the climate system," said Julien Nicolas, C3S Senior Climate Scientist as quoted by AFP.

Already, scientists have confirmed that climate change was behind some specific weather extremes last month. This includes the heatwave in the Sahel that has potential links to thousands of deaths.

Experts warn that the Earth is perilously close to breaching the 1.5 degree Celsius target set by the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Hayley Fowler, a climate scientist at Newcastle University, told AFP that she thinks "we have already lost the battle".

"At what point do we declare we've lost the battle to keep temperatures below 1.5? My personal opinion is we've already lost that battle, and we really need to think very seriously about keeping below 2C and reducing our emissions as fast as we can," she said.

Technically, the world is yet to breach the 1.5C target as it refers to the average global temperature over decades. However, some scientists warn that meeting the target is no longer realistic.

A new tax proposal which targets fossil fuel giants within the world's richest economies could raise hundreds of billions of dollars to aid vulnerable nations grappling with the adverse effects of climate change.

The "Climate Damages Tax" report, unveiled on Monday (Apr 29), advocates for an additional levy on carbon emissions by fossil fuel entities located in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries.

Would the tax make significant contributions to the fight against climate change?

As per the Guardian, projections suggest that the levy could potentially raise $720 billion (£580 billion) by the end of this decade.

The authors of the report calculate that if the tax takes effect in 2024, initially at $5 per tonne of CO2 equivalent, escalating by $5 annually, by 2030 it would raise around $900 billion in total.

Of the forecasted revenue, $720 billion would be earmarked for the international loss and damage fund, they propose. The remaining $180 billion could be redistributed as a "domestic dividend," supporting communities within richer nations with a fair climate transition.

As per David Hillman, the director of the Stamp Out Poverty campaign and co-author of the report, this "demonstrates that the richest, most economically powerful countries, with the greatest historical responsibility for climate change, need look no further than their fossil fuel industries to collect tens of billions a year in extra income by taxing them far more rigorously."

"This is surely the fairest way to boost revenues for the loss and damage fund to ensure that it is sufficiently financed as to be fit for purpose," he added.

The report has the backing of dozens of climate organisations worldwide, including Greenpeace, Stamp Out Poverty, Power Shift Africa and Christian Aid.

The proposed tax, as per Areeba Hamid, a joint director at Greenpeace UK, is an equitable strategy to compel the fossil fuel sector "to stop drilling and start paying for the damage they are causing around the world".
