#GRAVITAS | The people of the National Capital woke upto strong tremors as an earthquake of 4.0 magnitude rocked parts of the city. Even as earthquakes in Delhi are somewhat of a routine affair, thanks to its location near a seismic zone, this was no ordinary earthquake. Watch this video to find out more.

As 4.0 magnitude earthquake jolts Delhi-NCR Bihar, can it survive bigger quakes?

The 4.0 magnitude earthquake that shook New Delhi and surrounding regions on Monday (Feb 17) was caused by "in situ material heterogeneity", a senior expert said. While speaking to the news agency PTI, National Centre for Seismology Director OP Mishra said that the tremors were felt due to "local effects" as it was not a plate tectonic earthquake.

The epicentre was at Jheel Park in Dhaula Kuan, at a depth of 5 km, which is called shallow depth. According to Mishra, seismologically, it is not a new region as earthquakes have happened earlier as well in the same region.
In 2007, the Dhaula Kuan region experienced a 4.6-magnitude earthquake. However, the impact was not as strongly felt as Monday's shaking, as it had taken place at a depth of 10 km.

"Earlier, there was a 4.6 magnitude earthquake in 6 km periphery, but it was deeper, with 10 km depth," Mishra said, further adding that after Monday's quake, "we can expect aftershock of around 1 or 1.2 magnitude".

How do earthquakes occur due to in situ material heterogeneity?

Earthquakes due to in situ material heterogeneity refer to seismic activity caused by the inherent variability in the physical properties of the Earth's crust. Some of the physical properties include rock type and composition, pore fluid distribution, fracture networks, and mineralogy and texture.
The material heterogeneities can lead to stress concentration, which means accumulation of stress in certain areas due to variations in rock properties, which eventually increase the likelihood of earthquakes.

Heterogeneities can also scatter seismic waves, affecting their propagation, potentially leading to complex earthquake behaviour, and they can also influence the development of fault zones, making them more prone to earthquake activity.
Delhi is placed in seismic zone IV in the seismic zoning map of India, the second highest in the country.

What to do during an earthquake?

Do not panic: One of the most important things to do during an earthquake is to remain calm.
Drop, cover, hold on: During an earthquake, drop to your hands and knees. Make sure to cover your head and neck from any debris falling and crawl under a table or desk for shelter. Hold on to your shelter with one hand.

Stay away from dangerous areas: Avoid staying close to windows, glass doors, bookshelves, kitchen appliances, cabinets or anything else that may fall during the earthquake.
Watch out for aftershocks: After an earthquake occurs, there is a possibility of aftershocks that may happen minutes or even hours later. Stay alert and be ready to take cover again.
Check for any hazards: Once the shaking stops, wait a minute. After that check for any gas leaks, electrical damages or any fire.

A massive spike in seismic activity on the Greek island of Santorini has caused thousands of people to flee the island as scientists closely monitor the situation to understand the cause and potential consequences of the tremors. Meanwhile, artificial intelligence technology has emerged as a powerful tool in enhancing risk assessment capabilities and improving early warning systems. Watch in for more details!

AI detects hidden earthquakes; scientists use AI to monitor Santorini tremors

Scientists have used AI to detect ten times more earthquakes in Santorini than previously recorded. This breakthrough could help predict future seismic activity near Greece.

The Greek island of Santorini, a popular tourist spot, declared a state of emergency on Thursday (Feb 6) after the strongest earthquake of 5.2 magnitude was recorded on Wednesday evening. The recent unprecedented near-constant tremors have disrupted life on the island.
Athens Geodynamic Institute, Greece's leading authority on earthquake analysis, recorded seven successive tremors measuring over 4.0 magnitude early morning Thursday.
Greek Civil Protection Ministry has declared a state of emergency until March 3.

The string of quakes has forced hundreds of people to flee the island on planes since ferries are not allowed to leave the ports due to high winds.
As per reports, around 11,000 people are believed to have left the island. The scenic region witnesses over 3.4 million tourists a year and is home to some 20,000 permanent residents.
The recent seismic activities have intrigued scientists as so far experts have been unable to provide a certain timeframe on when the seismic activity will end.

Israel prepares for 'tsunami'

Amid a chaotic situation in Greece, Israel's National Security Council in the Prime Minister's Office has asked authorities and emergency bodies to prepare for the possibility of a tsunami off Israel's shore.
In the past, tsunamis have struck Israel and amid anticipation of a major earthquake on the Greek island of Santorini, the chances they will occur again are relatively high. Israel has a nearly 200-kilometre-long Mediterranean coastline.
As quoted in local reports, a summary of an emergency discussion held Wednesday night said, "In light of the distance of the State of Israel from the earthquake zone [approximately 900 kilometers, or 560 miles], the estimated warning time for a tsunami wave from a strong earthquake is up to two hours."

A powerful earthquake struck Shigatse, Tibet, on Tuesday resulting in over 95 fatalities and around 50 aftershocks, causing significant destruction. While earthquakes are common in the region, large-scale infrastructure construction is not. Typhoon Yagi (known as Severe Tropical Storm Enteng in the Philippines), was a tropical storm in September 2024 in Southeast Asia and South China.
Yagi was the first super typhoon—classified as category 5—of the annual typhoon season and was the most powerful storm ever to hit Northern Vietnam.
