Japan's Bonin Islands hit by magnitude 6.5 earthquake

More than 80 earthquakes, the strongest of 6.3 magnitude, struck Taiwan's east coast starting Monday (Apr 22) night and into the early hours of Tuesday. Watch to know more.

Taiwan Earthquake: Taiwan rocked by more then 80 earthquakes

<p>Taiwan&nbsp;was hit by a major 6.3 magnitude earthquake in the early hours of Tuesday (Apr 23), according to the island's Central Weather Administration. The island has been rattled by at least 80 earthquakes since Monday evening, with the first strong quake felt in the capital Taipei of magnitude 5.5 at around 5:08 pm (local time) (0908 GMT). It was then followed by a series of aftershocks and quakes, with two intense tremors hitting one after another around 2:30 am (local time) (1830 GMT).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Agencies mentioned that the quake occurred at 2:26 am (local time) (1826 GMT) and originated in eastern Hualien. According to the Hualien&nbsp;Fire Department, teams were dispatched to inspect any disaster from the new quakes. The initial statement by the department stated that no casualties had been reported yet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The earthquake was the latest in the series of quakes that had been shaking the island since Monday afternoon. Taiwan has been hit by hundreds of aftershocks after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Hualien earlier this month.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Earthquake in Taiwan</strong></h2>

<p>Earlier this month, a magnitude-7.4 quake hit the nation on April 3. Its epicentre was the Hualien region. It led to landslides that blocked roads around the mountainous region, while buildings in the main Hualien city were badly damaged. At least 17 were killed in that quake, with the latest body found in a quarry on April 13.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The island sees frequent earthquakes as it is located at the junction of two tectonic plates. The April 3 quake was also followed by hundreds of aftershocks.&nbsp;</p>

Red alert sounded in China amid fears of massive 'once-a-century' floods

<p>In 2023, Asia earned a title that is anything but an achievement: the world's most disaster-hit region by climate-related hazards.</p>

<p>Asia was worst-hit with floods and storms causing the highest number of casualties last year,&nbsp;as per a report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released on Tuesday (Apr 23).</p>

<p>As per the United Nations agency Asia reported 79 disasters linked to hydro-meteorological events in 2023. Of these, more than 80 per cent were related to floods and storms and collectively had a death toll of over 2,000, while another nine million people were directly affected, said the WMO.</p>

<h2><strong>Global Warming and Asia</strong></h2>

<p>According to&nbsp;WMO, last year global temperatures rose to record highs, and Asia was warming faster than the rest of the world.</p>

<p>Last year, the continent recorded temperatures nearly two degrees Celsius above the 1961 to 1990 average, reported Reuters citing the WMO. Furthermore, Asia's annual mean near-surface temperature was the second-highest on record, at 0.91 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average.</p>

<p>Rising temperatures, coupled with melting glaciers, threaten the region's future water security, said WMO.</p>

<p>In a statement, WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo said: "The report's conclusions are sobering."</p>

<p>"Many countries in the region experienced their hottest year on record in 2023, along with a barrage of extreme conditions, from droughts and heatwaves to floods and storms".</p>

The video, which is now going viral on social media platforms, has captured a tense scene within the unit as the earthquake struck.</p>

<p>With the ground trembling, four dedicated staff members sprung into action. Even when their own lives were at stake they ensured that the fragile newborns are protected anyhow.</p>

A powerful earthquake of 7.5 magnitude hit Taiwan around 9:00 am Japanese local time (0000 GMT) on Wednesday (April 3) which led to tsunami warnings for southern Japanese islands, said Japan Meteorological Agency. Seven people were killed and more than 700 others were reported injured in the massive earthquake. According to the agency, tsunami waves as high as three metres (10 feet) were expected in remote Japanese islands close to Taiwan, which includes Miyakojima Island. However, tsunami warnings have now been lifted. The earthquake reportedly knocked out power in different parts of the city. The footage of some collapsed buildings near the quake's epicentre was telecast on Taiwan television stations. As per media reports, some people are also trapped in the debris. The quake was felt as far as Shanghai. Japan’s national broadcaster broadcasted warnings like “Tsunami is coming. Please evacuate immediately,” said an anchor on NHK. “Do not stop. Do not go back," they said. “Evacuate!” read a banner on the broadcast channel. Another warning was issued by the Philippines Seismology Agency for residents in coastal areas of different provinces, appealing to them to evacuate to higher ground. The earthquake tremors were also felt in Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou and Ningde in China's Fujian province, as per the Chinese state media. Papua New Guinea earthquake: Five killed, 1,000 houses damaged; rescue efforts underway

Nearly 2,000 earthquakes hit a spot off the coast of Canada in a single day, which as per scientists was a hint that new oceanic crust is likely to be created through deep sea magmatic rupture. The quakes aren't any threat to people. Scientists say the quakes are interesting scientifically because they can reveal details about how the ocean floor pulls apart and new crust forms....Watch in for more details!
