According to the World Health Organization, India has about 35 million stray dogs. A spate of recent dog attacks has turned the focus on the condition of strays. The country lacks animal healthcare and control measures. Adopting strays can be one way of reducing the animal-human conflict. Recently a female street dog named Jaya from Varanasi got adopted by a Dutch tourist, Meral Bontenbe and it took her 6 months to get Jaya an animal companion passport. Here is the heartwarming story.

Data shows quakes have not only become more frequent over the past century — likely due to the improvements in earthquake detection technology — but are also causing much more destruction due to the growing population and construction densities.

More than 30 people killed after 6.4 magnitude earthquake hits Nepal; tremors felt in Delhi

<p>Baltic Sea, the largest expanse of brackish water in the world, as per German media reports, is on the verge of collapse.</p>

<p>The sea's ecosystem, as per reports, is reeling under the detrimental impact of environmental pollution and overfishing.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Dire situation</strong></h2>

<p>A recent report by the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM) about the state of the Baltic Sea paints a dire situation, reports German media.</p>

<p>The HELCOM study indicates that, despite conservation efforts by ecologists and experts alike&nbsp;over the last few years, there has been no improvement in the state of the Baltic Sea. In fact, the condition in certain areas has deteriorated, according to the report.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/gods-of-chaos-jupiter-protects-us-but-similar-gas-giants-do-this-to-earth-like-planets-654247">'Gods of chaos': Jupiter protects us, but similar gas giants whack other Earth-like planets</a></strong></p>

<p>"The health of the Baltic Sea ecosystem is under threat from the increasing effects of climate change and biodiversity degradation, catalysed by pollution, demands on land use, resource extraction and other pressures," says the report.</p>

<h2><strong>What are the primary challenges to the Baltic Sea?</strong></h2>

<p>As per the report, the Baltic Sea is primarily affected by human-induced activities like eutrophication — the over-enrichment of water, harmful substances and pollutants, oxygen depletion, and habitat destruction.</p>

<p>These human activities, as per the report, are "enhanced" by climate change.</p>

<p>"Climate change effects are already evident in the Baltic Sea, and global warming is expected to lead to further hydrological and ecological changes in the near future."</p>

<p><strong>Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/this-is-what-earth-will-look-like-if-it-surpasses-the-climate-threshold-and-it-will-happen-soon-654355">New study paints a scary scenario for when Earth passes the 1.5 degree threshold</a></strong></p>

<p>Quoting the report, German news outlet Bild reports, "Specific species, such as water birds, are facing drastic hardship, particularly along the German coast of the Baltic Sea. The condition is especially serious in the Bay of Kiel, Mecklenburg Bay, and Arkona Basin, where Rugia Island is located. The local porpoise population is also in jeopardy."</p>

<p>This degradation not only affects marine and animal&nbsp;life but also impacts humans. "The degradation of the marine ecosystem also reduces its (Baltic Sea) ability to produce goods and services for the benefit of society, with effects on our well-being," says the report. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>The way forward</strong></h2>

<p>The report states that continued efforts to improve the environmental status of the Baltic Sea's biodiversity are of key importance.&nbsp;</p>

Baltic Sea, the largest expanse of brackish water in the world, as per German media reports, is on the verge of collapse. The sea's ecosystem, as per reports, is reeling under the detrimental impact of environmental pollution and overfishing. Dire situation A recent report by the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM) about the state of the Baltic Sea paints a dire situation, reports German media. The HELCOM study indicates that, despite conservation efforts by ecologists and experts alike over the last few years, there has been no improvement in the state of the Baltic Sea. In fact, the condition in certain areas has deteriorated, according to the report. Also read | 'Gods of chaos': Jupiter protects us, but similar gas giants whack other Earth-like planets "The health of the Baltic Sea ecosystem is under threat from the increasing effects of climate change and biodiversity degradation, catalysed by pollution, demands on land use, resource extraction and other pressures," says the report. What are the primary challenges to the Baltic Sea? As per the report, the Baltic Sea is primarily affected by human-induced activities like eutrophication — the over-enrichment of water, harmful substances and pollutants, oxygen depletion, and habitat destruction. These human activities, as per the report, are "enhanced" by climate change. "Climate change effects are already evident in the Baltic Sea, and global warming is expected to lead to further hydrological and ecological changes in the near future." Also read | New study paints a scary scenario for when Earth passes the 1.5 degree threshold Quoting the report, German news outlet Bild reports, "Specific species, such as water birds, are facing drastic hardship, particularly along the German coast of the Baltic Sea. The condition is especially serious in the Bay of Kiel, Mecklenburg Bay, and Arkona Basin, where Rugia Island is located. The local porpoise population is also in jeopardy." This degradation not only affects marine and animal life but also impacts humans. "The degradation of the marine ecosystem also reduces its (Baltic Sea) ability to produce goods and services for the benefit of society, with effects on our well-being," says the report. The way forward The report states that continued efforts to improve the environmental status of the Baltic Sea's biodiversity are of key importance. It speculates that successfully limiting the amount of pressure human activities put on the environment should "show signs of improvement and support a sustainable marine region." "Ultimately, the recovery of the Baltic Sea biodiversity is entirely dependent on how well we can manage our activities to ensure that they are truly sustainable, both in the near future and in the long term," it concludes.

Fresh earthquake hits Afghanistan, tremors of magnitude 6.3 felt near Herat: USGS

Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range. More than 90% of the people killed by a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in western Afghanistan last weekend were women and children, U.N. officials reported. This crisis comes at a time when 15 million people – a third of the population of the country – do not know where their next meal will come from. The World Food Programme needs 400 million dollars in funding to deliver food to remote locations and help millions of the most vulnerable people. As Winter approaches – rebuilding houses in time will be an uphill ask. Can Afghanistan be helped?

Afghanistan quake victims buried in a mass funeral near Herat

<p>World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday (Oct 9) that most of the victims of the Afghanistan earthquake were women and children. The agency said that women and children make up two-thirds of the victims. According to the Taliban regime, at least 2400 people were killed and over 2000 were injured when an earthquake hit the country on Saturday (Oct 7). The Afghanistan earthquake was one of the deadliest this year.</p>

<p>"The earthquake happened around 11 in the morning, when men were out of the houses, so majority of those who are injured and died are women and children who were inside the houses at the time," WHO's Dr Alaa AbouZeid told Reuters in a video interview.</p>

<p>"Two-thirds of those with severe injuries who are admitted in the hospital I have seen yesterday are children and women," he said, referring to his time in Herat following the quake.</p>

<p>AbouZeid said that the effort to finance humanitarian operations remained critical since global funding has shifted away from Afghanistan after the US-led coalition's exit and the Taliban's return to power.</p>

<p>The number of children in hospital in critical condition was 'devastating'.</p>

<p>"I have seen a child like 3-4 months old with head trauma, due to the earthquake," he said.</p>

<p>He said that trauma to the head may cause long-lasting health effects or even disabilities. The WHO was mindful of the help the families would need in the long term.</p>

<p>"I have seen a child like 3-4 months old with head trauma, due to the earthquake," said AbouZeid.</p>

<p>The healthcare system in Afghanistan has been largely reliant on foreign aid. It is especially cash-strapped after the US&nbsp;exit. The international assistance, once the backbone of the economy, has halted for the most part.</p>

<p>In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, the UN's humanitarian office announced USD 15 million worth of assistance but material support has come from very few countries.</p>
