IPL 2022: CSK's Dwayne Bravo becomes highest wicket-taker in Indian Premier League history

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Dwayne Bravo achieved a massive milestone in his side's clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Saturday (March 26). KKR defeated CSK comfortably by six wickets in the season opener at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to get off to a winning start in the tournament.

Defending a low-key total of 131 runs, Bravo was the pick of the bowlers for CSK as he bowled brilliantly. Chennai Super Kings complete squad for IPL 2022: Deepak Chahar most expensive in Raina-less line-up

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a pretty quiet day at the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction on Saturday as the franchise remained content by focusing on buying their old players back. CSK went after a host of their former players and managed to get them back on day 1 of the IPL 2022 mega auction in Bengaluru.

A lot of eyes were on CSK ahead of the start of the mega auction as they were expected to revamp their squad ahead of the start of the new season. However, the four-time champions once again showed faith in experience over youth as they bought back Robin Uthappa and West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo for a sum of Rs 2 crore (INR 20 million) and Rs 4.4 crore (INR 440 million) respectively.

CSK then managed to bring back experienced Indian batter Ambati Rayudu, who was released by the franchise ahead of the mega auction. CSK spent Rs 6.75 crore (INR 67.5 million) to secure Rayudu's services for the upcoming season. CSK then went on to make Indian pacer Deepak Chahar their most expensive signing in IPL history.

Chahar, who has been an integral part of the CSK setup since joining the side in 2018, saw his price rise from his base price of Rs 2 crore to a whopping Rs 14 crore (INR 140 million) at the mega auction. CSK beat the likes of Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad to the signing of Chahar.

As CSK kept going after their former players and managed to get them back, Delhi Capitals (DC) came up with a hilarious tweet to troll the four-time IPL champions. DC shared a Bollywood inspired meme to take a dig at CSK. "Kuch bhi nahi badla yar aaj bhi sab kuch waise ka waisa hi hai (Nothing has changed mate, everything is still the same)," read the meme.

Former West Indies cricketer Dwayne Bravo has brutally trolled the current Windies One-Day International (ODI) skipper Kieron Pollard with a cheeky post on Instagram. While taking to his official Instagram handle, Bravo, who announced retirement from international cricket after playing the last game at the T20 World Cup 2021, took a dig at Pollard with a hilarious meme. Bravo posted an image of Pollard with "missing" written on it. At the bottom, he also wrote: "Last Seen: In Chahal's pocket". In the caption, Bravo wrote: "This is really a Sad day @kieron.pollard55 my best friend is missing guys pls if u have any info pls inbox me or report to the police." West Indies lost the first ODI and Pollard missed the second ODI and third ODI of the three-match series. 'Last Seen: In Chahal's pocket': Dwayne Bravo's 'MISSING' post for Kieron Pollard is hilarious

Former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has lauded MS Dhoni for single-handedly building Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the culture at the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise. Bravo was part of CSK's IPL title-winning campaign in the 2021 season as Dhoni & Co. once again shut the critics in style with their stellar campaign despite being written off by many at the start of the season.

Bravo, who has been released by CSK ahead of the upcoming IPL mega auction, is proud to have represented the franchise and played a part in its success over the years. CSK staged an incredible comeback in IPL 2021 after missing out on the playoffs for the first time in 2020. They became the first team to qualify for the top four and went on to lift their fourth IPL trophy in what was a memorable campaign for the team.

Bravo said it was a special season for CSK as the players were determined to prove their critics wrong after being called 'granddads' and 'Dad's army' in the IPL. The Dhoni-led side defeated Kolkata Knight Riders in the final in UAE to win the elusive trophy.

“It was a special season because the season before, we came seventh and it was the first time CSK did not qualify (for playoffs) in the history of IPL. So, all of us as players were determined to come back and prove ourselves and the fans that we are much better than that last season,” Bravo was quoted as saying by Telangana Today.

“So, even last season, no one gave us a chance because they called us the granddad of the IPL but we proved all the doubters wrong and created history again. I am very happy to be a part of the legacy of Chennai Super Kings, one of the most successful IPL franchise ever,” he added.

Crediting Dhoni for CSK's success over the years, Bravo, who enjoys a great rapport with the CSK skipper, hailed him as one of the best to have played the game. While Dhoni himself has struggled with the willow in the last two seasons in IPL, he proved why he remains one of the best captains in the league despite his growing age.

“It’s no secret that he is one of the best players to have ever played the game. He single-handedly built Chennai Super Kings and the culture. All of us as players are very proud and happy to have played under him and his leadership guidance. When it comes to off the field stuff, he doesn’t get involved much,” Bravo said lauding Dhoni.

West Indies were once the powerhouse in T20 cricket and have two back-to-back T20 World Cup titles to back the claim. A country blessed with some of the best all-rounders to have graced the shortest format of the game, the Caribbeans dominated T20 cricket for several years until their downfall in T20 World Cup 2021.

Not many years ago, they were called the dark horses heading into any big T20 tournament, but West Indies shun the tag under Daren Sammy's captaincy and became a force to reckon with in world cricket. The firepower in their batting line-up coupled with the presence of numerous all-rounders in the squad saw the men from Caribbean become the world-beaters in the shortest format.

The quality in their squad was no different this time around as well, as the two-time champions headed into this year's T20 World Cup as everyone's second favourites. They were no more being addressed as the underdogs and were clear contenders to successfully defend the coveted title and make it a hat-trick of triumphs.

However, they had an abysmal campaign finishing last in the Group 1 to miss out on a spot in the semi-final and expose the shortcomings which had been in the making for long. Despite having a fine blend of youth and experience, West Indies were left exposed at the big stage and could do little to hide the evident struggles in the side.

Kieron Pollard's men got off to a woeful start with a shattering defeat against England and could never really bounce back as they managed only one victory in their remaining four matches to finish fifth with just two points. Their abysmal campaign also marked an era in West Indies cricket as Dwayne Bravo retired from international cricket while Chris Gayle all but confirmed he might never turn up in T20Is again.

Here we try to break down what went wrong for West Indies at T20 World Cup 2021:

1) Misfiring batters

West Indies are blessed with some of the most explosive batters in world cricket. They have a batting line-up capable of destroying bowling attacks at will in any game. With the likes of Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran, Evin Lewis, Kieron Pollard and Shimron Hetmyer headlining the batting line-up, Windies were expected to bulldoze teams while taking their bowling attacks apart. But that wasn't the case in the UAE.

The openers failed to provide good starts consistently while the middle-order remained non-existent throughout the tournament as the batters failed to fire as a unit. Lewis and Hetmyer did produce a couple of sublime knocks but barring them, the rest of the batters filed to live up to the expectations.

Despite having a batting line-up with the likes of Dwayne Bravo and Jason Holder turning up at no. 8 and 9, West Indies failed to captalise and there failure with the bat was one of the biggest reasons behind their shambolic campaign which saw them win just one out of five matches in the tournament.

2) Lack of genuine pacers

While both Jason Holder and Dwayne Bravo can do the job with the ball in the T20s and have a proven record when it comes to the shortest format, the lack of genuine fast bowlers haunted West Indies at the T20 World Cup 2021. Veteran Ravi Rampaul, who made his comeback in the squad for the showpiece event, managed only two wickets in four appearances for the side.

Left-arm pacer Obed McCoy was in the bowling line-up in the opener against England but was replaced by Jason Holder after getting injured. Oshane Thomas was left to warm the bench for the entire tournament while the likes of Sheldon Cottrell and Alzarri Joseph were not even picked in the squad.

3) Spinners failed to step up

While the lack of a genuine pacer cost West Indies dearly in the T20 World Cup 2021, the spinners in the squad failed to make the most of the chances coming their way and were far from impressive. Akeal Hossein and Hayde Walsh were the two spinners in the squad and both of them collectively managed to pick only five wickets throughout the tournament.

While Hossein picked up all the five wickets, Walsh remained wicket-less in the entire tournament as he managed to make only a solitary appearance for the team. The lack of support from the other end meant Hossein had the majority of the burden on his shoulders as a lone spinner and the pressure caught up to his performances.

4) Big names disappointed

Very few teams can boast of quality all-rounders like West Indies did in the tournament. They had the likes of Pollard, Andre Russel, Dwayne Bravo and Jason Holder among others. Anyone of them can be a game-changer with the ball or the bat on their day but all of them disappointed in the World Cup.

While Russell would only score 25 runs and picked up three wickets, Bravo scored 26 runs and managed only two scalps. Captain Pollard scored 90 runs and bowled just 2.2 overs in the tournament while Holder averaged a shocking 85 with the ball and picked up only one wicket. With the bat, he didn't get enough chances and scored ony 24 runs.

Here we try to break down what went wrong for West Indies at T20 World Cup 2021: 1) Misfiring batters West Indies are blessed with some of the most explosive batters in world cricket. 3) Spinners failed to step up While the lack of a genuine pacer cost West Indies dearly in the T20 World Cup 2021, the spinners in the squad failed to make the most of the chances coming their way and were far from impressive.

Abu Dhabi T10: Delhi Bulls unveil team jersey with captain Dwayne Bravo

Veteran West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo said that he looks at the Abu Dhabi T10 as a way to challenge himself as a bowler as the format is more friendly towards the batsmen. Bravo, who led the Maratha Arabians to the title last season, will captain the Delhi Bulls in the 2021 edition that starts on January 28.

"I believe it can help players prolong their careers, and as a bowler, I use it as an opportunity to challenge myself because it`s not a bowler-friendly tournament, and you come up against the best players in the world. So I use it as an opportunity to work on my skills and see how I can still compete at the highest level," said Bravo in the tournament`s press release.

Bravo, 37, compared the format to the way T20 cricket was in its early stage. "T10 is an exciting tournament and it`s a competition that is just the way T20 was when it started a few years ago - being the hottest thing in the market, and attracting so many people around the world - I think T10 definitely can do something similar," he said.

The Trinidadian added that he is looking forward to facing players from the West Indies during the tournament. "I am definitely looking forward to playing against my teammates -- the likes of (Kieron) Pollard, Chris Gayle, (Andre) Russell, Nicholas Pooran -- we all have our individual rivalry amongst ourselves, and it`s about getting the bragging rights. It`s good that a tournament like this can bring all of us together and get us to compete against each other," said Bravo.

Chennai Super Kings' Dwayne Bravo ruled out of IPL 2020 due to groin injury

Chennai Super Kings opted for Ravindra Jadeja to bowl the last over against Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 on Saturday as it was revealed that Dwayne Bravo went off the field after suffering an injury. Bravo was the final over option for CSK but Dhoni had to go with Jadeja as the Windies all-rounder was unavailable to bowl.

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming has revealed the extent of Bravo’s injury while revealing that it is serious enough to keep him out for a few days or couple of weeks. Fleming further said that Bravo was disappointed that he wasn’t able to bowl the final over.

"He (Bravo) seems to have a right groin injury, obviously it was serious enough to keep him from coming back to the field, he is just really disappointed that he was not able to bowl the final over, that's pretty much for what he is in the team for. He would have to be reassessed going forward, at this stage, you would imagine that it would take a few days or a couple of weeks,” Fleming said.

IPL 2020: CSK CEO gives update on Ambati Rayudu and Dwayne Bravo's fitness

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has confirmed that their star all-rounder Dwayne Bravo will miss another couple of matches of the 13th IPL.

Despite missing the seasoned West Indian who is recovering from an injury, three-times winners CSK began their campaign on a positive note, beating arch-rivals Mumbai Indians by five wickets here on Saturday.

"Dwayne Bravo is out for a couple of games," Fleming said in the post-match press conference.
Bravo picked a niggle during the recently-concluded Caribbean Premier League and didn't bowl in the final due to a knee injury.

In his quota of four overs, Curran returned impressive figures of 1/28 while picking up the wicket of the dangerous looking Quinton de Kock, and then played a cameo with the bat.

"Curran's performance was terrific," Fleming said.

The head coach also heaped praise on Rayudu, who played a match-winning knock, making a 48-ball 71 and along with du Plessis, who scored an unbeaten 58, helped Chennai chase down a target of 163 with four balls to spare.

"Rayudu has been nothing short of fantastic. He has been pretty emotional and played a great knock," Fleming said.

The former New Zealand captain further said that the pitch was "difficult" to score and that the team is looking for ways to find the right balance.

The bowler also talked about the absence of crowd in the IPL.
