From weeks of deficit to a surge of rain pushing August 2025 into the record books, the monsoon of Delhi has shifted dramatically this year. The national capital has had its second-highest August rainfall over a decade by late August. Across 11 rainy days, Delhi has witnessed 311.8 mm of rain in August, putting it just behind last year’s 390.3 mm in 17 days.&nbsp;August rains reflected moderate variation between 2018 and 2021, followed by two very dry Augusts in 2022 with 41.6 mm of rain and 91.8 mm in 2023. However, the recovery in 2024 and 2025 quickly shifted from deficit to surplus by August, according to the India Meteorological Department.&nbsp;As per the IMD, rainfall in Delhi rose exponentially this year, recording 553.8 mm of rain this season, 36 per cent above normal, remaining behind only Ladakh and Rajasthan. But surprisingly, Delhi witnessed rainfall season weak with only 56 per cent of rain, below normal in the week ending June 11. But, it received a slight 12 per cent surplus rain by June 18, and another 28 per cent deficit on June 25. However, July saw little improvement.&nbsp;The turnaround came as rainfall rose 13 per cent above normal in the week ending July 30. Between June to July, the city witnessed only one week above normal rainfall. August, however, showed a sharp rise, 26% above normal in its first week, followed by 35% by August 12 and 37% by August 20. These heavy spells erased the earlier deficits, pushing Delhi into one of its wettest monsoons in more than a decade.<h3>How AQI of Delhi shift with rain?</h3>Generally, Rainfall comes with clean air for the city, but the August data shows a mixed picture. In 2020, with 237 mm of rain, the AQI of Delhi dropped to 64, among the cleanest in the recent past. Similarly, in August 2024, the wettest in over a decade at 390.3 mm of rain, the AQI improved to 72.&nbsp;In contrast, dry spells kept pollution higher. In 2022 (41.6 mm rain) and 2023 (91.8 mm rain), AQI levels stayed elevated at 90+ and 116. This August, the AQI averaged around 91, an improvement over dry years, but not as clean as wetter ones.

The national capital has had its second-highest August rainfall over a decade by late August. Across 11 rainy days, Delhi has witnessed 311.8 mm of rain in August, putting it just behind last year’s 390.3 mm in 17 days. August rains reflected moderate variation between 2018 and 2021, followed by two very dry Augusts in 2022 with 41.6 mm of rain and 91.8 mm in 2023. However, the recovery in 2024 and 2025 quickly shifted from deficit to surplus by August, according to the India Meteorological Department. As per the IMD, rainfall in Delhi rose exponentially this year, recording 553.8 mm of rain this season, 36 per cent above normal, remaining behind only Ladakh and Rajasthan. But surprisingly, Delhi witnessed rainfall season weak with only 56 per cent of rain, below normal in the week ending June 11. But, it received a slight 12 per cent surplus rain by June 18, and another 28 per cent deficit on June 25. However, July saw little improvement. The turnaround came as rainfall rose 13 per cent above normal in the week ending July 30. Between June to July, the city witnessed only one week above normal rainfall. August, however, showed a sharp rise, 26% above normal in its first week, followed by 35% by August 12 and 37% by August 20. These heavy spells erased the earlier deficits, pushing Delhi into one of its wettest monsoons in more than a decade. How AQI of Delhi shift with rain? Generally, Rainfall comes with clean air for the city, but the August data shows a mixed picture. In 2020, with 237 mm of rain, the AQI of Delhi dropped to 64, among the cleanest in the recent past. Similarly, in August 2024, the wettest in over a decade at 390.3 mm of rain, the AQI improved to 72. In contrast, dry spells kept pollution higher. In 2022 (41.6 mm rain) and 2023 (91.8 mm rain), AQI levels stayed elevated at 90+ and 116. This August, the AQI averaged around 91, an improvement over dry years, but not as clean as wetter ones.

The weather agency confirmed that rainfall in Delhi rose exponentially this year, recording 553.8 mm of rain this season, 36 per cent above normal, remaining behind only Ladakh and Rajasthan.

IndiGo, and Air India also issued advisories for passengers on Monday over flight operations to and from Delhi following rain. "Rain may impact flight operations to and from Delhi today. Please check your flight status before heading to the airport," wrote Air India on X.&nbsp;IndiGo advised the travellers to go for alternate routes due to the heavy rain in the national capital. "Due to today’s downpour, several roads across Delhi are currently blocked or experiencing slow movement. As per reports, the fire department received a call about the incident at 9.16 am, and three fire trucks were rushed to the spot along with police teams, the Delhi Fire Service said. “Seven people have died in the wall collapse incident in Harinagar, Jaitpur, including 3 men, 2 women, and 2 girls,” Delhi Police said.&nbsp;According to police, the incident occurred near an old temple adjacent to which were jhuggies where several scrap dealers lived. The sudden collapse of the wall, weakened by heavy rain, trapped eight residents. All were rescued and rushed to the hospital in critical condition.&nbsp;Additional DCP (South East) Aishwarya Sharma said, “There is an old temple here, and next to it are old jhuggies where scrap dealers live. One of the worst-hit areas was Connaught Place (CP), popularly known as 'the heart of the city,' which experienced over 100.2 mm of rainfall within only two hours.&nbsp;Several visuals of the flooded road and commuters experiencing trouble while travelling also surfaced on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). A video of Connaught Place posted by Indian news agency ANI shows waterlogging near the market where several cars and motorcycles are submerged in the flooded road. The Azad Market Railway Underpass and Ram Bagh Road also experienced waterlogging, impacting traffic flow in the nearby areas. Vehicles coming from Rani Jhansi Road, Pul Mithai, Barfkhana, and Veer Banda Bairagi Marg were diverted.&nbsp;Commuters travelling from Singhu Border (NH44) toward Model Town or Kingsway Camp were directed to divert via Mukarba Chowk and Outer Ring Road and were also advised to use Road No. 51 and Azadpur Chowk for those heading in the reverse direction.

<h3>IMD issues ‘Red Alert’</h3>The weather agency also issued a 'red alert' for 29 July, warning of more downpours in the coming days. The heavy rain prompted airlines to issue advisories warning passengers of possible delays due to gusty winds and inclement weather.&nbsp;In the meantime, IMD has predicted a cloudy sky with moderate rain, and the maximum temperature is likely to settle around 30 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;After heavy rain at 9 am on Tuesday, the air quality was recorded in the satisfactory category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 87, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data.&nbsp;Meanwhile, Air India issued an advisory to passengers that flight operations might be affected. The airline said, "#TravelAdvisory: Gusty wind and rain may impact flight operations to and from Delhi this morning."&nbsp;IndiGo also came up with a weather-related travel advisory informing customers to plan extra travel time to the airport.&nbsp;It wrote, "Travel Advisory A Rainy Day Reminder - With heavy rainfall expected over #Delhi, we're seeing a chance of delays and slower traffic to and from the airport. While we can't control the skies, we're doing everything possible to keep your journey steady on the ground. The India Meteorological Department had predicted light to moderate rain on Wednesday (July 9) and has also issued orange alert. There is also a possibility of thunder, lightning and intermittent rain.&nbsp;As per the India Meteorological Department, there may be heavy rain near Loni Dehat, Hindon AF Station, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Chhapraula, Noida, Dadri, Faridabad, Manesar, Ballabhgarh in the next few hours.&nbsp;East-moving cloud clusters are likely to lead to moderate rain in the majority of locations, with isolated patches experiencing heavy showers over the next two hours. Light to moderate showers are already in underway in the eastern parts of Delhi, and the situation is likely to worsen. In addition, the IMD has requested that residents observe all traffic advisories given by local authorities and refrain from traveling unless it is unavoidable.
