Despite losing the third and final ODI, on Wednesday (September 27),&nbsp;India had a lot of positives coming out from their just-concluded three ODIs versus Australia at home. In their last series prior to the CWC 2023 edition, which starts on October 05, India tested their benched players once again and also gave two games to R Ashwin, who returned to the ODI setup after a long gap -- having played his last in early 2022 -- with Axar Patel being injured during the Asia Cup.

Ashwin replaced Axar -- who is dealing with&nbsp;a left quadriceps strain -- and played the opening two encounters to account for four wickets. He looked in good rhythm&nbsp;but suspense persists regarding his World Cup spot as no official update has come on Axar's fitness. All teams have to announce their final 15 prior to September 28 and any changes after that date would need&nbsp;approval from the ICC. With suspense continuing on Ashwin's place, head coach Rahul Dravid revealed there are 'no changes' as of now on the final 15, which was announced early this month.&nbsp;

“We have to wait for an official confirmation or a decision on that. The NCA is in touch with the selectors and Ajit (Agarkar) so I will not make any comments on that. If there is any change you will get to hear about it officially, as of now there are no changes,"&nbsp;Dravid said in a press conference after the India-Australia ODIs on Wednesday.

After the Rajkot ODI, Dravid stated that he is 'really happy' with how things have shaped up for Team India with regard to their CWC 2023 preparations. "Jasprit got a couple of games, and bowled his quota of 10 overs. Siraj suffered from a bug but got back and was able to bowl today. It was good to see how Ashwin bowled in the first two games. KL and his keeping through 50 overs, returning after 6 months, has been great. Shreyas has got some good knocks in the last couple of games. Really happy with how things are going and hopefully we can keep the momentum going into the World Cup."

<section itemprop="articleBody">
Dravid added, "There are always areas you want to improve on, and we have ticked a lot of boxes. It's nice to see that the guys who have been out with injury, been away from a while, from our perspective, they've been able to get some good cricket, been able to spend time in the middle, get some runs, take some wickets, but there are always little things that you can improve."

<section itemprop="articleBody">
"It's going to be a long, tough tournament. We're constantly looking to improve as a team, even when we have results going our way."

India have reached Guwahati on Thursday evening (September 28), with Ashwin in the squad, for the two warm-up games -- on September 30 (versus England) and October 03 (versus the Netherlands in Trivandrum).

The final 15 players are set to be announced by the BCCI on Thursday evening.

'As of now....': Rahul Dravid on whether R Ashwin will be part of India's CWC '23 squad

The cricketing world is awaiting the start of the ICC ODI World Cup in India, which gets underway on October 05 in Ahmedabad. Defending champions England, India, five-time winners Australia and Pakistan are considered as the pre-tournament favourites but the likes of South Africa, New Zealand and Sri Lanka are also in form and can be deemed as the darkhorses of the mega event.

Talking about the Proteas, they have made the last four in alternate editions of the World Cup since their readmission in 1992. After missing out on a semi-final berth in the last edition in 2019, in England and Wales, the No. 4 ranked Temba Bavuma-led side are one of the serious contenders to make it to the last four, even if many won't consider them as outright favourites. However, premier pacer Kagiso Rabada feels his national side 'believes' it can win the coveted title as well.

"One thing we have never lacked as South Africans is belief, so going into the tournament we do believe we can win it," Rabada was quoted as saying by ICC.

"We've got the players to do so, so hopefully we can make our first final and win this competition. It's going to be hard, but it's going to be really enjoyable. It's exciting to have the best players in the world playing against each other, competing for one prize, and we are up for the challenge," he opined.

Reflecting on his growth from the 2019 edition, which was his maiden appearance in the ODI World Cup, Rabada stated, "The 2019 World Cup was my first and I wasn't successful at all. The lesson I took from that is that team cohesion is the most important factor, because individuals don't win World Cups, teams do." He added, "The older I have become and the more caps I have, the more I realise that I am a leader in that environment. Through knowing my own strengths and reinforcing them, knowing what makes me tick and through lending an ear to other players, I want to help set how we play as a collective."

We believe we can win ODI World Cup 2023, reckons South Africa speedster Kagiso Rabada

The cricketing fraternity is eagerly waiting for the commencement of the ICC ODI World Cup, which gets underway on October 05 in Ahmedabad. The mega event will be held entirely in India. Many former cricketers and experts of the game have shared their predictions for the showpiece tournament. Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn, who ended his career with 439, 196 and 69 wickets in Tests, ODIs and T20Is respectively, has also predicted the finalists of the CWC 2023 edition.

Speaking on Star Sports ahead of the 2023 edition, Steyn said, "It’s a tough one, you know my heart wants to go with South Africa making the final. I would love them to make the final, their team, a lot of their players play in the IPL, they play in India regularly. They got some guys like in David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen who really started to figure out those conditions and bat well there. Then, there is KG Rabada who has been bowling there for ages and a lot of their other senior players have played a lot of cricket there. So I feel like they have got the ability to go on and get to the finals with getting those players."

"I feel like the favourites would probably be India, I feel like India is going to be one of the finalists and probably England. But my heart wants to say South Africa and India but I am kind of leaning towards India and England,” the former South Africa speedster&nbsp;added.

In the same discussion, ex-India fast-bowling all-rounder Irfan Pathan has also backed Temba Bavuma &amp; Co. He stated, "See, on logic you can’t drop England from the finalists spot because they have a very strong team, and the way they are playing cricket with their all-rounders like at number 9, they have an all-rounder batsmen like Chris Woakes, so I know that but I have a hunch in my heart which says that South Africa will do great in this World Cup."

South Africa will play two warm-up games -- on September 29 (Friday) versus Afghanistan and October 02 (Monday) versus New Zealand in&nbsp;Thiruvananthapuram -- before their CWC '23 opener versus Sri Lanka in New Delhi on October 07 (Saturday). The Proteas are entering the World Cup on the back of a stunning 3-2 ODI series win, at home, over Australia after trailing 0-2.

Not India vs Pakistan, South Africa vs Australia, England vs New Zealand! Steyn predicts CWC '23 finalists

Australia’s star man Mitchell Marsh has highlighted Glenn Maxwell’s importance to the side as the visitors salvaged a consolation win on Wednesday, 27 September in the final ODI. The win saw Maxwell play a key role as he scalped four wickets to prove his all-rounder ability. Already a prolific batter, his performance saw Australia clinch the final ODI in the three-match series by 66 runs but losing the series 1-2.

<h2>Marsh addresses Maxwell’s importance</h2>

"It was a great spell. He came back after having not played much cricket for the last (few) months. It was great to see him back. It is the energy that Maxi brings to the team, his presence, and the balance that he gives us," Marsh said during the post-match press conference.

"We obviously know that his batting is absolutely class but what he can do with the ball, and the options that he will give us with our all-rounders is vital for us going into the World Cup,” Maxwell said.

Like Maxwell, 31-year-old Marsh also played a key role in Australia’s dominant win as he scored 96 runs in 84 balls. However, he was unlucky to miss out on a hundred having enjoyed a prolific last few months. He, along with David Warner (56), put up an opening stand of 78 runs. Marsh would later partner Steven Smith (74) for a stand of 137 runs for the second wicket.

However, Kuldeep Yadav got the better of him in the 28th over as he missed out on his second ODI hundred. Later, the ever-impressive Marnus Labuschagne scored a brilliant 72-run knock as Australia scored 352 runs in their 50 overs. Jasprit Bumrah scalped three wickets for India while Kuldeep ended with a brace.

In reply, Australia restricted India to 286 with Maxwell getting four wickets in the contest. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli both got starts on their return to the team while the Men in Blue fell short of the target before being bowled out.

The Aussies will get their ODI World Cup campaign underway on Sunday, October 8 against hosts India. They will take on the Netherlands on Saturday, September 30 in their first warm-up game,&nbsp;while Pakistan await them in the second warm-up match on Tuesday, October 3.

ODI World Cup 2023: Mitchell Marsh underlines THIS star's importance for Australia, says 'he is vital for us'

A lot has been happening in Bangladesh cricket of late. The Bangladesh cricket team announced their final 15-man squad for the upcoming CWC 2023 edition in India, which gets underway on October 05 in Ahmedabad, which saw the exclusion&nbsp;of star opener Tamim Iqbal. Tamim has had a topsy-turvy ride in the recent past --&nbsp;announcing international retirement, then taking a quick U-turn&nbsp;and stepping down as the ODI captain.

With Shakib Al Hasan replacing Tamim as the Bangladesh ODI skipper ahead of the forthcoming World Cup, Tamim held on to his spot during the home ODIs versus New Zealand. After the second ODI, he complained of back issues -- which had forced him to miss the Asia Cup 2023 edition -- and eventually got ruled out. Thus, Tamim lost his spot in the World Cup squad due to injury concerns. However, the opener made a shocking claim of being&nbsp;a victim of dirty politics.

On Wednesday (September 27), Tamim took to Facebook and confirmed that&nbsp;he would have been fit enough to take part in the ODI World Cup. However,&nbsp;he won't be travelling to India solely because he is aware of the roadblocks being created for him by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). One of which, he said, was a top board official suggesting him to give up his opening slot and bat lower in the order.

<h2>'Someone like Rohit Sharma built his career from No. 7 to opener'</h2>

Now, Shakib has hit back at Tamim's claims and lashed out at the former captain. "I am sure someone who is authorized had said this (to Tamim). I am sure whoever has said it, he thought of the team. A lot of things go into building a combination for a match. So if someone has said this to him, was it wrong? Or we can't make such a proposal? I am just going to tell someone that you can do whatever you want. Is the team first or the individual?" Shakib told the Dhaka-based TV channel T-Sports in an interview&nbsp;aired on Wednesday evening.

"Someone like Rohit Sharma built his career from No. 7 to opener, scored 10,000-plus runs. If he sometimes bats at No 3 or 4, would it be a big problem? It is totally childish. It is my bat, I will play. No one else can play. A player should bat at any position for the team. Team first. It doesn't make any difference if you have made 100 or 200, and the team loses. What can you do with personal achievement? You want to make a name for yourself?" Shakib pointed out.

Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/he-asked-me-to-skip-first-match-tamim-iqbals-shocking-revelation-behind-world-cup-exclusion-640277">‘He asked me to skip first match’ – Tamim Iqbal’s shocking revelation behind World Cup exclusion</a>

"You are not thinking about the team at all. People don't understand these things. Why was the proposal given to him? It was for the team. What is wrong in that? You are a team man when you agree to such a proposal. Unless you are thinking along those lines, you are not a team man. You are playing for individual records, success, fame, and name. Not for the team," the all-rounder opined.

Shakib went on to add that he did not wish to carry a half-fit player in a marquee event like the ODI World Cup. He claimed that anyone playing without being 100% fit is cheating the team.

<h2>'MS Dhoni once said that the unfit player is cheating his team and country'</h2>

Shakib mentioned, "I didn't discuss the subject with the particular player, medical team or selector. It is definitely the board's decision. People might doubt my capability or capacity but someone like MS Dhoni, who has won everything and has the knowledge and sense, once said that the unfit player who is playing is cheating his team and country. I think we should accept it, and not just Tamim but every player (that you have to be fully fit when playing for the team or country)."

Shakib added, "Kane Williamson won't play the first two matches (in CWC '23), but then he will start playing.&nbsp;If I knew something like this, I wouldn't have any problems. But if I know that there's uncertainty about him playing the seventh or the third or the first game, or that I will only know in the morning of the game, it will be difficult for me to select the team. I don't think we need such a player."

"I certainly heard that he will play selectively. A journalist can't really tell you that he will come to the office an hour before he wants to come to office. If you ask me personally, if I was the company CEO, I won't keep that employee. Although I never had any discussion about this matter."

36-year-old Shakib also criticised Tamim for not leaving captaincy early and stated, "I have often heard in the dressing room that he is leaving the captaincy. Even a player once told him that 'bhai, leave it early so that the new captain gets a bit of time'. Exactly that's what happened. The one who came in, didn't get the time. Each and everyone knew including the selectors and board officials. Papon&nbsp;bhai&nbsp;(BCB president Nazmul Hassan) certainly knew about it."

"I don't know why he didn't leave it (earlier). He can tell you. It is like, your commander takes you to war but (Shakib mimicking a solider) after he has got you ready, the commander isn't telling you to fire or retreat. Where will you go? We were in this situation in the last two matches against Afghanistan (in July). The captain wouldn't have changed ahead of the Asia Cup and the World Cup, unless he himself announced that he was resigning or retiring. It would have happened 18 months ago, when everyone knew what was about to happen," Shakib added.

It will be interesting to see if Tamim responds to Shakib's claims. For Bangladesh, they play Sri Lanka and England in their two CWC '23 warm-up ties, on September 29 and October 02, before opening their campaign in the tournament versus Afghanistan on October 07 in Dharamshala.

A lot has been happening in Bangladesh cricket of late. The Bangladesh cricket team announced their final 15-man squad for the upcoming CWC 2023 edition in India, which gets underway on October 05 in Ahmedabad, which saw the exclusion of star opener Tamim Iqbal. Tamim has had a topsy-turvy ride in the recent past -- announcing international retirement, then taking a quick U-turn and stepping down as the ODI captain. However, the opener made a shocking claim of being a victim of dirty politics. On Wednesday (September 27), Tamim took to Facebook and confirmed that he would have been fit enough to take part in the ODI World Cup. However, he won't be travelling to India solely because he is aware of the roadblocks being created for him by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). One of which, he said, was a top board official suggesting him to give up his opening slot and bat lower in the order. 'Someone like Rohit Sharma built his career from No. 7 to opener' Now, Shakib has hit back at Tamim's claims and lashed out at the former captain. Is the team first or the individual?" Shakib told the Dhaka-based TV channel T-Sports in an interview aired on Wednesday evening. Also read: ‘He asked me to skip first match’ – Tamim Iqbal’s shocking revelation behind World Cup exclusion "You are not thinking about the team at all. 'MS Dhoni once said that the unfit player is cheating his team and country' Shakib mentioned, "I didn't discuss the subject with the particular player, medical team or selector. It is definitely the board's decision. People might doubt my capability or capacity but someone like MS Dhoni, who has won everything and has the knowledge and sense, once said that the unfit player who is playing is cheating his team and country. I think we should accept it, and not just Tamim but every player (that you have to be fully fit when playing for the team or country)." Shakib added, "Kane Williamson won't play the first two matches (in CWC '23), but then he will start playing. If I knew something like this, I wouldn't have any problems. But if I know that there's uncertainty about him playing the seventh or the third or the first game, or that I will only know in the morning of the game, it will be difficult for me to select the team. I don't think we need such a player." "I certainly heard that he will play selectively. A journalist can't really tell you that he will come to the office an hour before he wants to come to office. If you ask me personally, if I was the company CEO, I won't keep that employee. Although I never had any discussion about this matter." 36-year-old Shakib also criticised Tamim for not leaving captaincy early and stated, "I have often heard in the dressing room that he is leaving the captaincy. Even a player once told him that 'bhai, leave it early so that the new captain gets a bit of time'. Exactly that's what happened. The one who came in, didn't get the time. Each and everyone knew including the selectors and board officials. Papon bhai (BCB president Nazmul Hassan) certainly knew about it." "I don't know why he didn't leave it (earlier). 'Someone like Rohit...': Shakib hits back at Tamim over CWC fiasco, questions his 'childish' approach

During the Asia Cup 2023 edition, former New Zealand cricketer-turned-commentator Simon Doull made a big claim about&nbsp;Team India. Doull&nbsp;reckoned that India's cricket is too statistics-driven and, hence, it becomes a reason for their downfall in big ICC matches. In addition, he pointed out that the reason for India's failures is that they don't resort to a fearless brand of cricket, which would mean compromising on stats.&nbsp;

"Fearless cricket is there issue," Simon Doull told Sky Sports. "They don’t play fearless cricket enough. They play statistics-driven cricket and they are too worried about their stats too often. And to me, that is the one area I am concerned about their batting side," he added.

Now, former Indian pacer S Sreesanth has responded to Doull's statement and made a big claim. "New Zealand are coming to India. They will get to know if India play attacking cricket or not. We will thrash them. They got lucky in 2019 with MS Dhoni getting run out due to a direct hit. What did you do after playing the final? They made a team like England win the World Cup, who hadn't won a 50-over World Cup until then. New Zealand are never going to win. Yes, they might win in the future, but it will be embarrassing for them this time. If you get a chance address the media, please think before you speak. If you are ready to give, you should be able to take it also." Sreesanth told&nbsp;Sportskeeda.

Sreesanth added, "I just want to tell Simon Doull that Indians are going to have a blast against New Zealand. New Zealand are going to learn a lot against India. Yes, there have been certain matches where they have done well against us, especially in ICC events. But those times have gone now. If any of these cricketers get to know what you said, and if Virat is made aware of it, it will be a lot of fun to watch that match."

At present, India are busy with their three-match home ODIs versus Australia with the third and final tie currently being held in Rajkot on Wednesday (September 27). The home side&nbsp;already have the series in the pocket with an unassailable 2-0 lead. On the other hand, a second-stringed New Zealand&nbsp;beat Bangladesh 2-0, on Tuesday (September 26),&nbsp;in the three ODIs in the Bangla Tigers' den.

New Zealand will face defending champions England in the CWC 2023 opener on October 05 in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, India will lock horns with Australia in their respective openers on October 08 in Chennai. Both India and New Zealand will square off in match 21 in Dharamshala.

'If Kohli or any...': Sreesanth slams Doull for stat jibe, says India will 'have a blast' vs NZ in CWC '23

R Ashwin's ODI return during the Australia series has made heads turn. Ever since Axar Patel got injured during Asia Cup 2023, Ashwin was recalled into the 50-over setup for the Australia ODIs, which is India's last series before the ODI World Cup starting October 05. In the opening two games, the 37-year-old has looked in good rhythm and accounted for four wickets. Before the third and final ODI of the series, which India lead 2-0, captain Rohit Sharma opined on Ashwin and whether he is a backup for the upcoming home World Cup.&nbsp;

Ahead of the third and final ODI, Rohit -- who joined the squad for the inconsequential tie -- addressed the reporters and answered how Ashwin is being assessed ahead of the ODI World Cup.

Rohit said, "He has got class, he has got the experience of playing the sport and handling the pressure. It's just that he hasn't played ODIs in the last year or so but you can't take away the class and the experience that the individual has. In the last couple of games, we saw how well he bowled. He has got a lot of variations up his sleeves and in case, there is a chance, we can look at a lot of things."

"The way things are at this point in time, it does well for us because we have got all the backups ready, we have given them enough game time, a lot of time in the middle. So, pretty much happy with how things have panned out in the last couple of weeks," Rohit added.

For the third and final ODI, India do not have the services of vice-captain Hardik Pandya, Shubman Gill, Mohammed Shami, Shardul Thakur and Axar Patel. Axar continues to sit out due to injury concerns,&nbsp;dealing with a left quadriceps strain. Ashwin, thus, has another chance to make a strong statement and get roped into the CWC final 15. All the participating teams have to name their final 15 before September 28.&nbsp;

The third and final ODI versus Australia is India's last international game before the CWC 2023 edition. They will then play two warm-up games, on September 30 and October 03, before their World Cup opener on October 08, where they face Australia in Chennai.

India vs Australia: Is R Ashwin a backup for CWC '23? Rohit Sharma spills the beans before 3rd ODI

Pakistan cricket captain Babar Azam believes bygones are bygones, and it’s time for the team to look forward to winning the World Cup 2023. Speaking to the media before departing for India, Babar addressed almost all issues, saying qualifying for the semis is a small goal as they aim to walk out as winners in this edition. With a strong squad, Babar is confident of his team performing well, including against India in the marquee clash in Ahmedabad on October 14.

"The top four is a small goal for us," Babar said at a pre-departure press conference.&nbsp;

"We want to come out as winners. We did not have enough time to put together a camp before the World Cup because we had been playing for too long continuously. Instead, we gave the players a break so they could come back refreshed and with the hunger to win. You play well when you have that hunger,” the skipper added.

While Pakistan looked like the team to beat at the start of the Asia Cup 2023, they ended up being the last of the four teams in the Super Four stage.

Speaking on what went wrong during the six-team tournament, Babar said as a group, they were doing well until their last two fixtures, and though they failed to deliver, the team has learned from their mistakes and will try not to repeat them during the CWC.

"Before the last two games in the Asia Cup, we were doing really well with the same team. Although we could not deliver the way we could, we have learned from our mistakes, as individuals and as a team. We have discussed all our mistakes as a team with the support staff and put it behind us. Asia Cup was a different tournament, the World Cup is entirely different," Babar added.

<h2>Keen on playing well in Ahmedabad</h2>

Having not played in front of over 100,000 spectators before, Babar Azam said he looks forward to playing at the Narendra Modi Stadium and vowed to do well under pressure. Perhaps the finest all-format player at this moment, Babar said, "I am excited to play in Ahmedabad as it will be jam-packed."

“I will try my best to perform up to my potential. Whenever you are playing a big tournament, it is a very exciting opportunity. It is a chance to become a hero as every World Cup performance gives you a different kind of confidence. Everyone is at their best during the World Cup, so whenever you perform there, it is an altogether different feeling. Performances come when you do not take pressure,” the Pakistan captain noted.

Pakistan will face New Zealand in Hyderabad in their first of the two warm-up games on September 29. The Men in Green will open their CWC campaign against the Netherlands on October 6.

Top four is small goal for us, we want to come out as winners: Babar Azam on Pakistan's chances in World Cup

One of New Zealand’s greatest fast bowlers ever, Trent Boult is grateful for being able to represent his country in the third World Cup despite being out of central contract for over a year now. The left-arm seamer of the highest quality, Boult&nbsp;had been on the receiving end on the past two occasions and aims to end the streak and be on the winning side this time during the marquee event starting in India on October 5.

With him returning to the ODI setup in the lead-up to the World Cup, Boult played in an away series against England and is currently in Bangladesh for the three-match ODIs.

Following the end of the 3rd ODI, Boult will travel to India for the World Cup.&nbsp;

Last year, Boult, alongside his former teammate Martin Guptill, decided against signing the central contract, leaving him out of contention in top-flight cricket.

He did so to spend more time with his family and continue to play franchise-based T20 leagues across the world.&nbsp;

Addressing the elephant in the room, Boult commented on retaining his World Cup spot despite not playing an ODI in over a year for his country.

“Selection for the World Cup was never guaranteed. I had to work for it, so I am very happy to be here,” the left-arm seamer said.

Having lost two straight CWC finals, an experienced Boult feels what’s behind is behind as he looks forward to delivering for his team in perhaps his final World Cup.

Talking on the same lines, Boult said, “I’ve been very fortunate to play in a couple of World Cup finals and been on the wrong side of all of them.”

“It’s a cliché, but you learn more when you fail than when you succeed. I feel like I’m a better cricketer for that experience,” he added.

<h2>Boult eyes final hurray</h2>

With New Zealand, much like every time, not starting the tournament as favourites, Boult feels he needs to tick off all the boxes if New Zealand were to win their maiden World Cup in India.&nbsp;

Sharing his thoughts on realising his dream of lifting the 50-over World Cup, Boult said he has the final push left to do it for the team this time.

“I’m looking forward to hopefully getting one more run and lifting the trophy in a couple of weeks time. That’s the big focus for a lot of us,” Boult said.

Meanwhile, New Zealand will play two warm-up matches before taking on England in the World Cup opener on October 5 in Ahmedabad.

World Cup spot was never guaranteed, I had to work for it: Trent Boult on return to ODI side

Pakistan cricket captain Babar Azam on Tuesday (Sep 26) rubbished claims of a rift in the team after its close&nbsp;defeat to co-hosts Sri Lanka in their last Super Four game of the Asia Cup 2023, which led to them bowing out of the multi-nation event in Colombo.

After Pakistan's miserable run in Asia Cup which was eventually&nbsp;won by Team India, there were rumours of a rift in the Pakistan dressing room.

Reports said that captain Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi got into a verbal spat in the dressing room after the Sri Lanka match.

But Babar dismissed the reports while addressing the press in Lahore.

After Pakistan's miserable run in Asia Cup which was eventually won by Team India, there were rumours of a rift in the Pakistan dressing room. Reports said that captain Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi got into a verbal spat in the dressing room after the Sri Lanka match. But Babar dismissed the reports while addressing the press in Lahore. No ill-will in dressing room: Pakistan captain Babar Azam slams rumours of rift ahead of CWC '23

India beat Australia by 99 runs (DLS method) to win the second and penultimate ODI and seal the three-match series with an unassailable 2-0 lead on Sunday (September 24) in Indore. Being asked to bat first, India rode on Shubman Gill's 104, Shreyas Iyer's 105, stand-in captain KL Rahul's 52 and Suryakumar Yadav's 37-ball 72* to post 399 for 5. In reply, the rain break revised Australia's target to 317 in 33 overs before they bundled out for 217 in 28.2 overs to register a despairing loss. Before the third and final ODI, in Rajkot on Wednesday (September 28), former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh hailed Suryakumar -- following his blistering 72 not out -- and named him the 'ace of spades' for India in the upcoming home ODI World Cup.

Amid a lot of criticism for his poor returns in ODIs, Surya was named in India's provisional World Cup squad as Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. have backed the right-hander due to his aggressive style of play. If he gets going, he can change the complexion of the game while batting in the lower order. Already a big name in T20Is, Surya has been backed fully ahead of the ODI World Cup and Harbhajan feels he is India's 'ace of spades'. In addition, Bhajji feels&nbsp;his name should be written first in the team sheet and then the rest following his unbeaten 72 -- laced with 6 fours and an equal number of sixes at 194.59 -- in the Indore ODI versus Australia.&nbsp;

"Surykaumar Yadav has to play all the matches. I don't care whom he replaces, but his name should be taken first and then the rest. You have a player who is a pure match-winner and can single-handedly make the game one-sided. He is the ace of spades. We have been talking about a finisher...he is the one. He has to play at No. 5 for India," Bhajji said on his YouTube channel.

Surya came out to bat at No. 6 in the Indore ODI, following the momentum set by centurions Gill, Iyer and Rahul. He went berserk in the final overs -- slamming Cameron Green for four back-to-back sixes -- to take India to 399 for 5. Even in the series opener, in Mohali, the right-hander made an impressive 50 (49) as he announced his return to form in the format just before the 50-over showpiece event, starting on October 05.

India will open their campaign in CWC '23 on October 08 when they face Australia in Chennai.

Yuzvendra Chahal, who is out of India's ODI setup, lauded R Ashwin after the wily off-spinner's 3 for 41 in the rain-affected second and penultimate game between India and Australia in Indore on Sunday (September 24). In reply, Australia's chase got reduced to 317 in 33 overs after the second and final rain break. As of now, Axar remains the first-choice but if he continues to be unfit, Ashwin might get the nod in the final 15. All teams have to announce their final 15 before September 28.

The third and final ODI will also see the return of regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah.&nbsp;

Ind vs Aus: Yuzvendra Chahal shares heartfelt message for R Ashwin after 2nd ODI

After much delay, Pakistan cricket team's visa issues have finally been sorted and they are now&nbsp;cleared to travel to&nbsp;India.

Earlier on Monday (September 25), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) wrote to the International Cricket Council (ICC) raising 'serious concerns'&nbsp;over the delay in&nbsp;Babar Azam &amp; Co.'s&nbsp;travel to India for the upcoming ODI World Cup due to visa issues.

Later in the evening, the ICC confirmed&nbsp;that&nbsp;the Indian government approved the Pakistani team's visas for the mega event in the subcontinent.&nbsp;

It is to be noted that the visa clearance has come less than 48 hours before Pakistan's scheduled travel to India, via Dubai, in the early hours of September 27 (Wednesday).&nbsp;

<section itemprop="articleBody">
"Visas have been issued to Pakistan," an ICC spokesperson told news agency PTI.

There is yet no end to the drama as confusion remained in the Pakistan camp over the grant of visa.

"We have not got the call from Indian High Commission yet over visa clearance. Member of our team is stationed there," PCB spokesperon Umar Farooq informed the same&nbsp;agency.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, it is believed that&nbsp;a 10-day process was always in place, with as many as&nbsp;three ministries in India --&nbsp;including External Affairs and Home --&nbsp;involved in the matter of giving clearance to Pakistani visas.

The same procedure is in line&nbsp;for all applications from Pakistan and, hence, there was no specific delay (as reported by PCB).

Moreover, the complaint stating that&nbsp;Pakistan squad could not travel to Dubai holds no significance&nbsp;because there was always the need for biometric tests.

CWC '23: After much delay, Pakistan visa issues sorted, team cleared to travel to India

Star Sri Lanka all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga aggravated his Grade 3 hamstring tear and could likely remain out of contention for a place in the XI for World Cup 2023. More so he might also require surgery, ruling him out for an indefinite period. The latest reports suggest Sri Lanka might include him in the final 15 for the marquee event in the hope of him attaining fitness during the fag end of the tournament.

Speaking with ESPNcricinfo, Arjuna de Silva, Sri Lanka’s medical committee head, indicated Hasaranga might not get fit in time for any game during the mega event, starting October 5.

"Medically, it seems unlikely that Wanindu will be fit," De Silva said.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the report revealed the current status of bowlers Dushmantha Chameera and spinner Mahesh Theekshana. While seasoned seamer Chameera, who picked up a pictorial injury earlier, is said to be up and running in the nets, managing his workload, Maheesh Theekshana, who strained his hamstring ahead of the Asia Cup final, is in rehab.&nbsp;

However, the good news is both are expected to get fit before Sri Lanka’s first World Cup game against South Africa on Saturday, October 7.

De Silva also provided some updates on the two other seamers – Dilshan Madushanka and Lahiru Theekshana, who missed Asia Cup 2023, revealing both are fully fit and raring to go.

With the deadline date for all teams to name their final 15 being September 28, Sri Lanka has a few days to list the squad.&nbsp;

<h2>Wanindu’s absence a big blow for Sri Lanka</h2>

Sri Lanka’s best bowler, Wanindu Hasaranga, took the World Cup Qualifiers 2023 in Zimbabwe by storm, picking up 22 wickets from seven games at 12.91. He also picked up three six-wicket hauls, dismantling the opposition at will. His exploits were essential in helping Sri Lanka win the tournament and seal a World Cup berth.

Meanwhile, Hasaranga was also expected to remain fit and available for the Asia Cup, but a last-moment injury ruled him out of the competition.

Alongside him, Sri Lanka missed some of their first-team bowlers but still managed to reach the finals, which they lost to India in a one-sided contest by ten wickets.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka will face hosts India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 2.

Wanindu Hasaranga doubtful for World Cup as Sri Lanka remain dicey on final 15

Pakistan cricket team’s preparations for the ODI World Cup have taken another toll according to the latest report on Friday, September 22. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is yet to receive the green light from the External Affairs Ministry of India for visas as they were still left stranded on Friday. The latest developments put a spanner in their work to travel while they have already suffered a huge setback in Nassem Shah, who will miss the entire ODI World Cup in India.

<h2>Pakistan suffer setback</h2>

Pakistan were expected to travel to UAE on Monday and then have a two-day stay there before flying out to India. However, with delays in visas, they now plan to travel to Dubai on Wednesday before landing in India on Thursday. The 1992 ODI World Cup champions are due to play New Zealand in the warm-up match on Friday. According to reports, they remain the only team yet to receive visa clearance with the rest of the eight traveling teams cleared.

The tensions between the nations have been a big friction point for the nations to cross the border. Pakistan suffer another setback in World Cup preparations, to miss Dubai trip due to visas delay

Ex-India batter Gautam Gambhir is in awe of Babar Azam’s exceptional talent. A batter of supreme quality, Babar is a batter to look out for in the upcoming World Cup 2023, Gambhir reckons. Despite the likes of star Indian batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, alongside returning New Zealand captain and veteran Aussie opener David Warner, all looking strong to end CWC as top run-getters, Gambhir feels the Pakistan captain might edge everyone on the list, setting the marquee event on fire.

Speaking with Star Sports, Gambhir acknowledged Babar Azam’s unique ability to compete against the top bowlers in the toughest of conditions, saying,&nbsp;"Babar Azam has that every quality that he can set this World Cup on fire. I have seen very few players who have a lot of time to bat. I believe that there is Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Joe Root and David Warner, but Babar Azam has a different level of quality," Gambhir said on Star Sports.&nbsp;

Babar Azam has every quality to set World Cup 2023 on fire: Gautam Gambhir

CWC 2023: How Team India has fared in last six editions

After his magical 6 for 21 spell in Asia Cup 2023 final, Mohammed Siraj is on cloud nine. Siraj led India's charge with the ball after Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. were asked to bowl first in Colombo on September 17. The 29-year-old wreaked havoc with the ball as Sri Lanka folded up for 50 in 15.2 overs as Team India closed the game with a 10-wicket win with 263 balls to spare. After his best spell in the format, Siraj climbed to the top spot in ICC ODI Rankings for bowlers on Wednesday (September 20). Now, he has won praise from AB de Villiers, his former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) teammate and South Africa great AB de Villiers.&nbsp;

De Villiers, speaking on his 360 show, pointed out that Siraj never gives up and his four-wicket over broke the back of Sri Lanka's batting line-up in the final of the continental tournament.

<h2>'Bowlers I respect the most are guys who&nbsp;never give up'</h2>

De Villiers said, "I think what stands out with him is his attitude, and we've spoken about this before on this series. Your attitude can really uplift you if you never give up. And if you keep trying and you make your attitude, catch you with your teammates, the people want you there. The fans want you there, and that's where you start doing some brilliant things and special things on the park. And Mohammad Siraj is one of those players. He always just keeps coming back. He's always in your face and I've mentioned this before. The bowlers that I respect the most are the guys that never gave up. That would always compete for every single ball, be in your face. And that's what Mohammad Siraj does."

The former South African captain added, "Well, he's not scared of trying his short ball. He's there in the batter's face. He's always trying to get you out. And the batter can feel that. And Sri Lanka certainly felt that in the final. Uh, what a fantastic turnaround. The thing that stands out, as I mentioned earlier, is he keeps trying. He's always in your face. His catches are in place and his attitude is spot on for the perfect fast bowler. If I can say that, he's always gonna keep trying. Congratulations, India. Congratulations, Siraj, with that final, the figures in the final, Simply incredible. And then we saw that, incredible over. Wicket, dot wicket, wicket, four runs and another wicket. And that was it. That literally, broke the back of the Sri Lankan batters. And that was the end of that."

After the Asia Cup, where Siraj ended as India's highest wicket-taker (10) and second overall, the speedster has shifted focus on the India-Australia home ODIs. The three-match series opener kicks off in Mohali on Friday evening (September 22). The pacer will be desperate to carry on with the momentum as this is India's last series before the CWC 2023 edition on home soil.&nbsp;

Former India World Cup winner Suresh Raina has backed Shubman Gill to explode in the upcoming ODI World Cup in India as they get ready for the carnival of cricket. Raina, member of the 2011 World Cup winning squad, reckons Gill has all the tools in his arsenal to replicate Rohit Sharma’s form from the 2019 edition of the World Cup. The current Indian skipper scored four hundreds at the tournament and led his nation to the semifinals before an excruciating exit in the semifinal against New Zealand brought his campaign to an end.

<h2>Raina backs Gill</h2>

"He's been consistent for a year and a half. He struggled in the middle against West Indies, but the way he's come back and scored good runs in the Asia Cup. He is looking positive, using good footwork, and from getting out at 40 against the West Indies, he is now comfortably hitting 50s and even 100s. He'll be one of the most important players at the World Cup," Suresh Raina told Jio Cinema.

So far in the calendar year, Gill has amassed nine hundreds – six for India and three for Indian Premier League (IPL) side Gujarat Titans (GT). He is currently enjoying the form of his life that also saw him win the Orange Cap at the IPL 2023 with 890 runs. According to Raina, the kind of form Gill is in, he could replicate the success story of Rohit.

From Nicholas Pooran to Jos Buttler: Five batters with most sixes in ODIs since CWC '19

Indian&nbsp;pacer Mohammed Siraj will enter the upcoming India-Australia ODIs&nbsp;at home&nbsp;as the No. 1 bowler after the latest update in the ICC ODI Rankings&nbsp;on Wednesday (September 20). Siraj has been rewarded for his spectacular run with the ball, chipping in with regular wickets in the powerplays, including a magnificent 6 for 21 in the recently-held Asia Cup final between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo on September 17 (Sunday). In the continental tournament's summit clash, Siraj broke the back of the Lankan batting line-up. His career-best figures not only propelled India to the title but also&nbsp;took&nbsp;him to the numero uno position in the overall standings for bowlers.

He has 16 more points than Josh Hazlewood, who lost the top spot after the South Africa ODIs in the African nation.&nbsp;

India's Mohammed Siraj becomes No. 1 ODI bowler after 6 for 21 in Asia Cup final

Joe Root is gearing up for England's three-match ODI series opener versus Ireland, on September 20 (Wednesday) at Headingley, Leeds. The former England Test captain voluntarily added him to the squad for the first ODI&nbsp;as he needs more game time in the&nbsp;format ahead of the CWC 2023 edition, which kicks off with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad on October 05. Root's decision comes on the back of a horrible run in the four ODIs against New Zealand,&nbsp;at home, where he ended with scores of 6, 0, 4, and 29.

Ahead of the Ireland series, where Zak Crawley will lead a second-stringed side, England's regular captain Jos Buttler lauded Root's 'hunger to play' and backs him to regain form before CWC 2023.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Buttler said, "It just shows his hunger to play. He's someone who, over the last four years because of the schedule probably hasn't played as much 50-over cricket as he would like. He's an experienced guy and he knows what he needs. He's arguably the best player in our team and he just knows what he needs to get ready. It was very simple for all involved."

Meanwhile, England's chief selector Luke Wright also lauded Root for requesting for more game time and&nbsp;added, "It's great for someone to have that desire to keep wanting to do more. He just wanted a bit more time. It's a great thing for someone to still have that desire to keep wanting to do more and more. It shows where he's at with his game and what makes him such a world-class player that, when he doesn't feel quite right, he still wants to tinker and do more. As much as we probably thought he needed a break as well, he just wanted another go."

Root has batted only 16 times in ODIs since the 2019 World Cup, won by England in a thrilling final, at Lord's, versus the Black Caps. Hence, he is desperate to regain his rhythm before the upcoming ICC event in October-November.

Joe Root is gearing up for England's three-match ODI series opener versus Ireland, on September 20 (Wednesday) at Headingley, Leeds. The former England Test captain voluntarily added him to the squad for the first ODI as he needs more game time in the format ahead of the CWC 2023 edition, which kicks off with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad on October 05. Root's decision comes on the back of a horrible run in the four ODIs against New Zealand, at home, where he ended with scores of 6, 0, 4, and 29. Arguably best player in our team: England captain Jos Buttler lauds under-fire Joe Root ahead of CWC '23

A regular in the XI not a long time back, Pakistan's Shadab Khan is now said to get replaced by a newcomer in the side for the showpiece event in India starting October 5. The vice-captain had mediocre outings in the recently-concluded Asia Cup, picking just three wickets as Men in Green crashed out of the tournament in the Super Four stage.

The latest reports emerging from local media suggest chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq and Captain Babar Azam are contemplating including uncapped Abrar Ahmed as cover for Shadab in the CWC squad.

According to Geo News, Babar Azam is disappointed with the performances of some seniors, with close friend Shadab being one of them.

With Pakistan already facing injury issues, including that of Naseem Shah, who is likely to miss the World Cup due to a shoulder injury, and Haris Rauf, who suffered pain in his side during the Asia Cup, removing Shadab from the scheme of things this close to the marquee event could hurt their momentum.

“During their meeting, the chief selector and skipper also discussed the fitness problems and bad form of the important players,” the report said.

Meanwhile, Abrar - the young spin prodigy, rose to the limelight following his debut against England in the home Test series last December.

Quicker through the air than Shadab, adding some mystery factor to his bowling, Abrar remains an unknown entity for most teams. With 38 wickets in six matches at a strike rate of 51.26, drafting in Abrar could be a risk worth going for.

<h2>Vice-captaincy post under threat</h2>

Let alone fighting for his place in the starting XI for the World Cup 2023, Shadab Khan’s vice-captaincy position is also said to be under threat. If Shadab gets overlooked, pace-bowling spearhead Shaheen Afridi could be named Babar’s deputy.

The left-arm seamer is part of the most-talked-about bowling trio in today’s cricket, including Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf – two of whom are nursing injuries. In their absence, Pakistan played Mohammed Wasim Jr and Zaman Khan in the do-or-die clash against Sri Lanka, which Pakistan lost by two wickets.&nbsp;

Per the report, all parties concerned will sit across the table with PCB chief Zaka Ashraf to take a call on such topics.&nbsp;

With September 28 as the deadline date for all teams to name their final 15 for the Cricket World Cup, the PCB has around a week to decide on the squad to travel to India.&nbsp;

Shadab Khan’s World Cup place in doubt as selectors keen on drafting in new face for CWC 2023 - Reports

Australia legend Adam Gilchrist praised injured-and-out India keeper-batter Rishabh Pant, saying he is amazed to see Pant's impact on batters worldwide. An attacking opener during his time, Gilchrist said wicketkeepers have brought a change to their approach in batting following Pant’s exploits in his brief career.

Pant made his international debut in 2017 and emerged as the top batter in the India Team, especially in Tests. Averaging around 44 and striking at over 73, Pant is a top-notch keeper-batter in Tests. His performance against Australia during India’s previous tour, where he scored 274 in five innings, including a match-winning 89 at the Gabba, Brisbane, earned him the reputation of a destructive force to reckon with.&nbsp;

"I think Rishabh has inspired a lot of wicket-keeper batters around the world to play that [aggressive] way. It is fascinating for such a young man to have such an impact that Rishabh has had, and others are responding and playing in that positive manner," Gilchrist told PTI.

Following a car accident late last year, Pant remained out of action and will miss the upcoming Cricket World Cup at home starting October 5.

Currently, he is undergoing rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru and is said to be fit for an on-field return shortly.

<h2>KL over Ishan behind the wickets at CWC</h2>

A three-time World Cup winner with Australia, Gilchrist has backed makeshift keeper-batter KL Rahul to take care of wicketkeeping duties during the World Cup, calling selectors' keen interest in having Rahul over regular gloveman Ishan Kishan for the showpiece event as impressive.

Speaking on India ticking most boxes, especially having two keeper-batters in their provisional 15, Gilchrist said India is well stocked, with options under their belt, they can deliver on the bigger stage.

"They [India] are well stocked. They have got a couple of [wicketkeeping] options there, obviously, when KL was out with his injury, Ishan Kishan took his opportunity and played really well, and now they find themselves in the team together, so that's a wonderful case of taking an opportunity.

"Being positive, and then, forcing the selectors into keeping you in the team [is impressive]. It seems like KL is gonna be the one who is going to continue with the gloves, but it does not seem to hinder Ishan Kishan's batting, he seems to be playing really well, carefree, attacking and dangerous," Gilchrist added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, after winning the Asia Cup 2023, India will host Australia for three ODIs. They will also open their Cricket World Cup campaign against the former five-time winners in Chennai on October 8.

Adam Gilchrist in awe of Rishabh Pant’s impact on keeper-batters worldwide; backs KL Rahul over Kishan in CWC

On Monday evening (September 18), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced two squads for India's upcoming three ODIs versus Australia at home, starting on Friday (September 22) in Mohali. In what will be India's last series before the commencement of CWC 2023, on October 05 in India, KL Rahul will lead in the opening two games with Rohit Sharma to return for the series finale. However, R Ashwin's comeback has made heads turn.&nbsp;

Ashwin, who has not played an ODI since early 2022, has rejoined the 50-over setup after a long gap. Many reports claimed&nbsp;that his inclusion was on the cards ever since Rohit hinted at his comeback post Asia Cup 2023 final, where India beat Sri Lanka by ten wickets in Colombo on Sunday (September 17), following Axar Patel's injury. For the Asia Cup final, India recalled Washington Sundar as a like-for-like replacement for Axar, but now the senior pro Ashwin has also been&nbsp;included. Meanwhile, Axar is&nbsp;part of the squad only for the third ODI, subject to fitness.

During a virtual press conference, Rohit opened up on Ashwin's ODI comeback so close to the World Cup. There are now strong possibilities of him making a late entry in the WC squad, especially if Axar&nbsp;remains unfit.&nbsp;

<h2>'It is&nbsp;all in the head more than the body'</h2>

Rohit told, "With guys like Ashwin, game-time and time on the ground is not so much of a concern. Which is why we thought if he is an option for us, we need to get him in. With the kind of experience he has, for guys like him, it's all in the head more than the body. I thought getting him in could give is a chance to understand where he is at, how his body is and stuff like that."

"It's not like he has not been playing cricket for the last year or so. Yes, he hasn't played in this [ODI] format, but he played Test cricket recently in the West Indies, and if I'm not wrong, in the TNPL as well. Of course, there's no comparison but he has had some cricket there. The games against Australia will give us a chance to look at where he's at," he added.

Meanwhile, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar said, "We're hoping Axar will be fit. Washy was already part of the squad for the final. Ashwin brings experience, so it gives us options in case there is a need at some stage for us to look at those guys."

As reported by Cricbuzz, Ashwin&nbsp;is scheduled to play a 50-over match in Chennai on Tuesday (September 19),&nbsp;in the local league of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). Thus, the 37-year-old spinner is sincerely preparing himself for&nbsp;any potential scenarios ahead of CWC&nbsp;'23&nbsp;in India.

For First two ODIs vs Australia:&nbsp;KL Rahul (C &amp; WK), Ravindra Jadeja (Vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.

For third and final ODI vs Australia:&nbsp;Rohit Sharma (C), Hardik Pandya, (Vice-captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel*, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj.

Virat Kohli, Kuldeep Yadav and Hardik Pandya have also been rested for the first two ODIs, along with Rohit, but will return for the final game.

'Game-time not a concern': Rohit Sharma on R Ashwin's ODI return in Australia series ahead of CWC '23

Member of the 2019 World Cup-winning squad for England, pacer Jofra Archer will fly with the CWC’23-bound team to India as a travelling reserve, ECB men’s chief selector Luke Wright said on Monday. Archer, out of action since April&nbsp;earlier this year with an elbow injury, will continue his rehab in India. Archer was not named in the final 15 picked on Sunday, with opener Jason Roy also missing out due to back spasms, as England roped in young Harry Brook.

"Jofra Archer will be travelling with the squad to India. He is one of the reserves, but we also need to look after him, focus on his rehab," Wright said.

England picked three seam-bowling all-rounders in Chris Woakes, Sam Curran and David Willey alongside the express pace of Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson, while lanky Reece Topley will take the new ball. Two-time World Cup winner Adil Rashid retained his place as a lone specialist spinner in the 15-man squad.

Talking about Roy’s exclusion from the final 15, Wright said he fell on other sides of things as despite him being locked in as Jonny Bairstow’s opening partner for the CWC, Roy failed to make the cut because of injury issues.

"It's not a decision we've taken lightly. In the early squad, we had him down for opening the batting with Jonny Bairstow in the World Cup...but things happen in sport, injuries happen.

"Everyone was told 'look, this is the 15 we're looking to take to the World Cup', but unfortunately that's the ruthless side of sport isn't it? It's not the nice side of the sport that changes do have to be made," Wright said.

England’s final World Cup 2023 squad –

Jos Buttler (captain), Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, David Willey, Reece Topley, Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson

<h2>Root added to squad for 1st ODI vs Ireland</h2>

Meanwhile, veteran batter Joe Root has been added to England’s squad for the first ODI against Ireland starting Wednesday, September 20, in Leeds on request. Against New Zealand in the four-match ODIs, Root had a mediocre outing, scoring just 39 runs at 9.75.

England are fielding a second-string side for the three-match Ireland ODIs.

<h3>Here is England’s squad for the Ireland series –</h3>

Zak Crawley (captain), Ben Duckett, Rehan Ahmed, Joe Root (first ODI only), Brydon Carse, Sam Hain, Will Jacks, Craig Overton, Matthew Potts, Phil Salt, George Scrimshaw, Jamie Smith, Luke Wood

We are determined to make our fans proud with our performance at World Cup: Virat Kohli

Kapil Dev, India's 1983 World Cup-winning captain, has backed Rohit Sharma &amp; Co.&nbsp;to win the upcoming ODI World Cup at home, which kicks off on October 05 in Ahmedabad. On Sunday (September 17), in Colombo, Team India thrashed Sri Lanka by ten wickets -- chasing a paltry 51&nbsp;-- to win the Asia Cup 2023 edition (eighth title overall) to strengthen their preparations for CWC 2023. Hence, Kapil has backed the national side but advised them to play 'passionately' and 'enjoy themselves'.

Speaking to PTI, Kapil said that reaching the top four would be India's first priority and then luck will come into play.&nbsp;

"I think if we can come in top four, that is more important and then it will be about stroke of luck and everything," Kapil said on the sidelines of the launch of the third edition of J&amp;K Open, to be played at the Jammu Tawi Golf Course from October 4 to 7.

"We can't say right now that we are favourites, of course our team is very good. Heart says something else, mind says no we have to work very hard. I know our team, I don't know about other teams, so I would say it is unfair for me to give a blank answer," Kapil opined.

India is ready to win ODI World Cup: Kapil Dev urges Rohit & Co. to 'play passionately'

South African seamers Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala will undergo fitness tests later this week, determining their participation in the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2023. Both were included in the provisional 15-man squad for the showpiece event in India, starting October 5, but played just one match each in the recently concluded Australia series. With the pace being South Africa’s go-to-weapon in CWC, as also echoed by Kagiso Rabada during an exclusive chat with WION, the absence of these two&nbsp;will hurt Proteas' chances of hitting the bulls’ eye this time.

While express pace Nortje has suffered a lower back injury, medium pacer Magala is nursing issues in his left knee.

Considering the deadline date for all teams to name their final 15 is September 28 – a day before the start of the CWC warm-up matches, the selectors will have around a week to take a call on the bowling duo.

Even though South Africa came from behind to beat Australia across five ODIs, winning it 3-2, Proteas’ white-ball coach, Rob Walter, admitted they would have liked both to have some game time in the lead-up to the World Cup.

But since they remained out of contention for selection due to injuries, the chances of them missing the flight to India are increasing, leaving the South African camp worried.

“We are continually taking stock as to where both of those players are,” South Africa’s white-ball coach Rob Walter said.

“The fact that they weren’t playing today with a week to go before we board the plane for the World Cup is obviously a cause for concern. We would have wanted them out there. There are complications around taking players that are injured into a World Cup because then you have to provide a medical reason to be swapped out,” Walter added.

<h2>Selectors ready with backups</h2>

During the fifth and final ODI in Johannesburg, all-rounders Andile Phehlukwayo and Marco Jansen starred with the bat, hitting 39 and 47, respectively, though Jansen returned with five wickets. Phehlukwayo’s power-hitting, especially in the last over against Michael Neser, gave confidence that in case of the worst-case scenario, roping in Andile would do good to the side’s balance.

“Andile is one of a couple of guys who are part of a broader squad, and today he showed us, especially with the bat, what we have seen in terms of his capability,” Walter said. “That knock, you can look at it, and say it was match influencing. A total of 270 looks different to a total of 315, and he was a massive role-player in that. He took an important wicket with the ball as well. I am very happy that Andile was able to deliver that performance today.”

South Africa will fly to India on September 23, and it is before that they have to name the final 15.

South Africa pace duo could miss World Cup bus due to fitness issues as final squad announcement date nears

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan feels India will need Axar Patel's batting at No. 8 in the forthcoming ODI World Cup, which kicks off in India on October 5. Axar is currently out of action&nbsp;after suffering a left quadriceps strain during the just-concluded Asia Cup 2023 edition, won by Rohit Sharma-led India on Sunday (September 17) in Colombo.

India had a good run in Asia Cup 2023. They were tested on many occasions but romped past Sri Lanka in the final to win by 10&nbsp;wickets after Mohammed Siraj's 6 for 21 demolished the Lankans for a mere 50 in 15.2 overs. Later, India chased down the score with 10 wickets and 263&nbsp;balls to spare.

While there were&nbsp;plenty of positives for Team India, some injury concerns remain in their preparations for CWC 2023. With Shreyas Iyer's back issues persisting, Axar's injury is also a cause of concern.

Irfan feels Axar will be vital to India's chances as his batting is needed at No. 8.

"He got hit in two or three places, so we don't know how serious it is. However, he is an extremely fit guy, which means he might recover quicker and it's not that he is a very aged player. It is extremely necessary for the Indian team to get him fit and come back. I feel India will need his batting at No. 8 because he has shown form on Sri Lankan pitches where it is slightly difficult to bat," Pathan said during a discussion on Star Sports.

Axar suffered the injury during India's close loss to Bangladesh in the Super Four stage on Friday (September 15).

During India's tricky 266-run chase versus the Bangla Tigers, Axar kept India's hopes alive -- after centurion Shubman Gill's departure (121) -- with a fine 42 before falling in the penultimate over. His batting has improved significantly, across formats, in the last one year and, hence, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. will hope for his quick recovery.

Asked about Axar's&nbsp;likely replacement if the spin-bowling all-rounder fails to recover before CWC 2023's commencement, Piyush Chawla -- also part of the same discussion -- made his choice known.&nbsp;"If Axar Patel doesn't get fit, we see Washington Sundar only in his place because once he came, he straightaway played in the final of the Asia Cup. It means the team have shown a lot of confidence in him, so Washington Sundar."

Axar is likely to remain out of India's upcoming three-match ODI series versus Australia, at home, which starts on September 22 (Friday) in Mohali.

If not all the games, he is expected to be out for the opening two encounters.

Team India will need Axar Patel's batting at No. 8 in CWC 2023, feels Irfan Pathan

India defeated Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the Asia Cup final on Sunday (September 17) in Colombo to clinch their eighth title in the tournament history. Rohit Sharma-led India were asked to bowl first and rode on Mohammed Siraj's 6 for 21 to dismiss the islanders for 50 in 15.2 overs before chasing down the paltry total in 6.1 overs.

During their entire campaign, Team India were tested on several grounds before coming to their own in the summit clash. There were a lot of individual brilliance throughout the tournament for the Men in Blue, with the likes of Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Rohit, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav doing well.

Talking about Ravindra Jadeja, the spin-bowling all-rounder also claimed six wickets but didn't do anything significant with the bat.&nbsp;

Ahead of the India-Australia home ODIs, which kicks off on Friday (September 22) in Mohali followed by CWC 2023, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir opined that Jadeja will have to come good with the bat in the upcoming 50-over mega event.

Speaking to Star Sports, Gambhir -- the 2011 ODI World Cup winner -- said, "If Ishan Kishan plays at No. 5, there are question marks there as well. So Ravindra Jadeja will have to win matches with his batting ability because you might have a situation where you need 80 or 90 runs in 10 overs and the No. 6 and No. 7 batters might be playing together."

"Ravindra Jadeja has the ability but it is still debatable against top-quality bowling. The way he has contributed, no doubt he will fit in any playing XI, but India will be happy if Ravindra Jadeja is seen in good hitting form. There is a massive difference between good batting form and good hitting form," Gambhir further added.

Gambhir stressed that the ability to form partnerships down the order was something which was missing for India during Asia Cup 2023. Jadeja only managed&nbsp;25 runs in three innings in the just-concluded continental tournament. Thus, he will be looking forward to the India-Australia ODIs to get some runs under his belt before the&nbsp;World Cup gets underway.

After the Australia home ODIs, India will play two warm-up games -- on September 30 and October 03 -- before their CWC 2023 campaign gets off the mark on October 08, where they play Australia in Chennai. The World Cup commences on October 05 with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad.

Pak great Wasim Akram names who will be Rohit-led India's main weapon in CWC 2023 "Ravindra Jadeja has the ability but it is still debatable against top-quality bowling. Jadeja only managed 25 runs in three innings in the just-concluded continental tournament. Thus, he will be looking forward to the India-Australia ODIs to get some runs under his belt before the World Cup gets underway. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
