England men’s selection committee, headed by Luke Wright, made eyebrow-raising last-minute amend to their final 15 for the Cricket World Cup 2023 by dropping Jason Roy and drafting in Harry Brook. Roy, who played an integral part in helping England win their maiden World Cup four years ago, is out with back spasms and didn’t take part in the four ODIs against New Zealand recently.

Dawid Malan, who opened in three out of the four matches, and top scored&nbsp;with 277 runs at 92.33, including a 96 and a hundred, will now open with Jonny Bairstow at the CWC 2023, with former captain Joe Root coming in at number three. Ben Stokes, who unretired from ODIs following the home Ashes, will take up the fourth slot, with Captain Jos Buttler coming in next. Two hard-hitting all-rounders, Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali, will play the pinch-hitters' role at six and seven.

Although Harry Brook, who made headlines with his unbelievable exploits across formats in the past year since his debut, failed to impress the selectors with his scores in the NZ ODIs, he still got roped into the final 15 as an outright backup for any position in the top five.

Three bowling all-rounders – Sam Curran, Chris Woakes and David Willey alongside the express pace of Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson and new-ball bowler Reece Topley complete the seam-bowling department, while Adil Rashid is picked as the lone specialist spinner.

Addressing the squad announcement, Wright said he is pleased with the final 15 and believes this group can deliver on the bigger stage and help England defend their title.

"We have selected a squad we are confident can go to India and win the World Cup," Luke Wright, England's national selector, said. "We are blessed with an incredibly strong group of white-ball players, which was underlined by the performances in the series win against a very good New Zealand team."

"The strength of the group has meant that we have had to make some tough decisions on world-class players with Jason Roy missing out and Harry Brook coming into the squad," Wright added.

Meanwhile, England will host Ireland for three ODIs at home, starting September 20, flying to India afterwards. England will begin their title defence against Bangladesh on October 10.

India opener Shubman Gill starred with the bat against Bangladesh on Friday in Colombo, hitting a marvelous 121, but failed to guide his team to victory as the Tigers stood tall, winning the game by six runs. Having completed his fifth ODI hundred, alongside hitting a double hundred earlier this year, Gill has been among runs and remains hopeful of carrying his Midas touch to the home World Cup, starting October 5.

Against Bangladesh in Colombo, Gill deployed a cautious approach before unleashing the attack in the middle overs. While he managed to survive the pace scare earlier when Tanzim was bowling peaches with the new ball, Gill took on the spinners on the slower-turning Premadasa track, showing off his ability to deliver across all conditions.&nbsp;

Speaking to the media after the last Super Four game in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, Gill said the instructions were clear on what to do and how to approach the chase on this track the other night. Detailing a little on this, Gill added the chat before the start of the innings was to reduce the dot ball percentage and play late and close to the body as possible.

"On slow wickets, there are a lot of dot balls. Our chat as a batting group is to reduce dot balls and rotate strike," Gill said during the post-match presser.&nbsp;

"The track was slow and was taking turn, so taking singles is not easy, especially for new batters. The talk was about playing it late and close to the body."&nbsp;

"On slow wickets, more runs are scored square of the wicket and less down the ground. So, the aim was to do that," the India opener added.

<h2>Gill ready for CWC challenge</h2>

Indian pitches, during one and a half month CWC, will get slower, with spinners playing a major role during the fag end of the tournament. Having suffered the wrath of struggling against some quality spin bowling against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in recent outings, Gill underlines the challenges Team India needs to work on during the marquee event.

"We had a camp in Bangalore before coming here and practised on similar surfaces," Gill said. "The World Cup is such a long tournament, and as we go deep into the tournament, the wickets will get slower. It is not easy for batsmen coming in to rotate strike and minimise dot balls. That's what as a batting unit and bowling group we are looking to overcome."

Gill, in 2023, averages more than 68, with 1025 runs in 17 matches so far.&nbsp;

Shubman Gill unveils plan on how to dominate on slower pitches during World Cup 2023

South Africa in a 50-over Cricket World Cup has been a different story altogether. Having reached the semis four times earlier, South Africa is yet to play and win a final.

However, with the latest edition of CWC, to be held in India, just around the corner, Proteas pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada, in an exclusive chat with WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo, spoke in detail about his side's chances of breaking the ice at the mega event, Quinton de Kock's shocking retirement call and his favourites, outside of South Africa, to win the title in India.

Leading the star-studded bowling attack alongside Anrich Nortje, Rabada feels pace will be Proteas' go-to-weapon in India in the World Cup.

Expressing his excitement in the lead-up to the World Cup, Rabada said,&nbsp;"Anticipation is building up. The World Cup is a huge event. It’s going to be a huge competition in a cricket-mad country like India."&nbsp;

Realising South Africa entering the ten-team tournament as non-favourites, Rabada said it could work in their favour as the team would march forward with less pressure and expectations on their shoulders, meaning they could play with more freedom and express themselves.

"Entering the World Cup as non-favourites can perhaps help us. People are not backing us to win, but that could work to our benefit. All we are looking forward to doing is playing good cricket," Rabada told WION.

"We can win this World Cup because we have the players, the experience in our squad. This squad is a good mixture of players. It is a much more experienced team, full of match-winners too."

"It’s about clicking as a unit, as a team. We need performances to come at the right when we need it. If we play cricket the way we set out to play, then I think we have a very good chance," the right-arm seamer added.

<h2>De Kock is South Africa's one of greats</h2>

Quinton de Kock announcing his shock retirement from ODIs following the World Cup is a blow to the team, Rabada feels. Praising the keeper-batter, his long-time teammate said,&nbsp;"He (de Kock) has done incredibly well for South Africa, and it (his retirement) is a huge blow. He’s a great player. One of the best batters and a keeper-batter in history."&nbsp;

When asked about what would be key to South Africa's success at the World Cup, Rabada said express pace will be their weapon.&nbsp;

"Pace is definitely our strength and something we would utilise to our advantage in the World Cup," Rabada opined.

Although he backs South Africa to break the deadlock this time in India when asked to pick his favourites outside of his team, the seasoned campaigner handpicked defending champions England, hosts India and former five-time winners Australia as strong contenders.

"Defending champion England, India and even Australia are strong contenders. I guess having looked at England, and what they have done over the years, they are a strong side," Rabada concluded.

Meanwhile, South Africa will open their CWC 2023 campaign against Sri Lanka in Delhi on October 7.

EXCLUSIVE: People not backing South Africa to win World Cup 2023 could benefit us, says Kagiso Rabada

West Indies great Vivian Richards has backed Team India to 'do well' in the upcoming home ODI World Cup, which kicks off on October 05 with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad. Richards, regarded as one of the finest batters of his time and a two-time World Cup winner, feels the&nbsp; massive home support will be extremely helpful for the Men in Blue.

Speaking to ICC, Richards said, "I fancy India, I have got a deep affiliation with India, that particular country in itself. I made my debut in India and I have a lot of sentimental reasons about that part of the world." He added, "So I will back India to do well, they have massive support you can never forget that when you have massive support it can be seriously encouraging."

Massive support can be seriously encouraging: WI great Viv Richards backs India ‘to do well’ in CWC 2023

Shubman Gill has his eyes set on the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition, which will kick off in India on October 05. The Indian opener, who is currently playing&nbsp;in the Asia Cup 2023 edition, says that his aim is to win the home ODI WC title, where the Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue will open their campaign on October 08, in Chennai, versus Australia. Gill will be one of the most important batters for India in the mega event, especially given how impressive he has been in 2023.

In the ongoing calendar year, Gill has a double ton, two centuries and four half-centuries in the 50-over format. In addition, he struck three hundreds in IPL 2023 and scored his maiden T20I ton earlier&nbsp;this year. Moreover, he also slammed an impressive 128 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2022/23 edition during the home Tests against Australia. Thus, Gill will be confident going into his maiden World Cup and will hope for more big knocks in the games in the run-up to the WC opener.&nbsp;

Speaking to the official broadcasters during the Super 4 round of the Asia Cup, in Colombo, Gill said&nbsp;that his goal was to win the World Cup. The 24-year-old mentioned, "The most important goal for me as a player right now is to win World Cup 2023. I recall being young when India won the World Cup in 2011. The mindset is to swiftly read the wicket and access the positions."

Gill added, “As a batsman, it is critical to quickly access the position and understand the speed. So the planning and play are all based on that. Mindset plays an important role as one has to switch mentally, like from an ODI mentality to a T20 one. The faster you switch, the faster your body adapts; thus, I believe being able to mentally switch is important."

The right-hander has been among the runs in the ongoing continental tournament -- jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. While missing out in India's group stage clash versus Pakistan, he came to his own with a sublime 67 not out versus Nepal and struck a praiseworthy 58 in India's ongoing Super 4 tie versus arch-rivals Pakistan. The game kicked off on Sunday (September 10), in Colombo, with Babar Azam &amp; Co. opting to bowl first. India rode on Gill and captain Rohit Sharma's&nbsp;(56) fifties to stitch a solid 121-run opening stand.&nbsp;

After Gill and Rohit's departures, India were well-placed at 147 for 2 in 24.1 overs with Virat Kohli (8 not out) and KL Rahul (28-ball 17*) in the middle before rain and wet outfield pushed the game to the reserve day. The proceedings will resume on Monday (September 11) with India looking for a big score.

Asia Cup: Most important goal is to win World Cup 2023, says Indian opener Shubman Gill

The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) has written to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to reconsider the September 29 Cricket World Cup warm-up game between Pakistan and New Zealand. The HCA said the local security agencies requested them to urge the BCCI to make last-minute changes while expressing&nbsp;their inability to provide adequate security due to the festivals Ganesh Visarjan and Milan-Un-Nabi culminating on September 28.

As per the latest reports, the HCA has again flagged the issue of staging two back-to-back World Cup games on October 9 (between New Zealand and the Netherlands) and October 10 (Pakistan vs. Sri Lanka) as they won’t be able to provide security for one of the games.

The HCA, who is unhappy with the communication from BCCI’s end over receiving an official letter on the revised schedule, is trying to convince the local authorities who have been asking for the same. Although the BCCI had sent a confirmation letter during the first schedule announcement in June, they haven't communicated anything since.

Meanwhile, the Hyderabad police informed the HCA of being unable to provide adequate security personnel for both matches, especially for the October 10 game involving Pakistan, which would require an extra cushion. The report states around 3000 police personnel will be deployed for just one game, other than the ones stationed at the hotel where the Pakistan team will be staying.

Since BCCI announced the CWC schedule almost 100 days before the start of the tournament on October 5 in Ahmedabad, making changes so close to the start looks unlikely.

During the revised schedule, the date of the marquee clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan was rescheduled, as earlier it was slated on October 15, and now it will take place a day prior on October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The said change is taking place because of the Navratri festival, which will begin on October 15 and is celebrated with much flair.

The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) has written to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to reconsider the September 29 Cricket World Cup warm-up game between Pakistan and New Zealand.

The Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) has written to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to reconsider the September 29 Cricket World Cup warm-up game between Pakistan and New Zealand. The HCA said the local security agencies requested them to urge the BCCI to make last-minute changes while expressing their inability to provide adequate security due to the festivals Ganesh Visarjan and Milan-Un-Nabi culminating on September 28. Cricket World Cup: HCA writes to BCCI to reschedule September 29 warm-up game due to security concerns

England’s star batter Harry Brook has been given an ODI World Cup lifeline as he has been included in the England squad for the New Zealand and Ireland series. The squad announced on Wednesday, September 6 sees the inclusion of the T20 World Cup winner who was surprisingly overlooked for the ODI World Cup squad. However, with amendments in the squad still possible until September 27, Brook could still make the England squad for the ODI World Cup.

<h2>Brook included in England squad</h2>

England are set to face New Zealand in a four-match ODI series followed by an Ireland tour later in the month. While the competition for places is still high, Brook’s inclusion in the squad for the series could come as a big spanner in the work for the likes of Jason Roy, Dawid Malan, and Liam Livingstone as they are struggling for form.

If Brook makes the desired impact on the side during both the series, he could be on the plane to India for the World Cup. However, this could mean one of Roy, Malan, and Livingstone could miss out on the showpiece event. As things stand, if Brook is drafted into the World Cup squad, Roy could make way for him as the other two options offer utility options.

The 24-year-old Yorkshire star has played only three ODIs for the national team where he has scored 86 runs with a best of 80. He was an important member of the squad that won the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.

Harry Brook to give ODI World Cup audition as star player included in latest England squad to face NZ, Ireland

Veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has lauded Ishan Kishan and hailed his versatility after the 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batter was named in India's 15-man squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup. Kishan pipped Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson to be included in the provisional squad along with keeper-batter KL Rahul. The young batter has been in solid form in the 50-over format with four successive half-centuries and confirmed his WC spot following a fine 82 versus Pakistan in India's Asia Cup 2023 opener, on September 02.&nbsp;

Speaking on Kishan, Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, "This is not a competition between Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson, because Kishan fills so many roles. When you pick a 15-member squad, you need to pick a backup wicket-keeper. Even when we pick a Ranji Trophy squad, we pick two wicket-keepers."

The 36-year-old Ashwin further highlighted that Kishan can bat anywhere and being a left-hander, he will add more variety to the line-up. It is to be noted that India have two left-handers in the form of Kishan and Ravindra Jadeja among their main&nbsp;batters --&nbsp;Kuldeep Yadav is also a left-hander down the order -- going into the mega event.&nbsp;

“Ishan Kishan is also a back-up opener along with being a back-up wicket-keeper, he is two-in-one player. Now that Ishan Kishan has succeeded at Number 5, it gives India two left-handers in the middle order. Everyone was going gaga over left-handers and they were saying Ishan Kishan cannot bat at No.5, but he has delivered now,” Ashwin added.

The Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue will face Pakistan on September 10, in Colombo, and aim for a win to progress further. It will be interesting to see if India field both Rahul -- who is now fit and joined the squad in Sri Lanka -- and Kishan in the playing XI.&nbsp;

After the Asia Cup, India will host Australia in three ODIs before playing their WC opener versus Pat Cummins &amp; Co. on October 08 in Chennai. The World Cup kicks off in Ahmedabad with defending champions England taking on New Zealand on October 05.

He's a two-in-one player: Ashwin lauds Kishan's versatility after batter included in India's CWC '23 squad

After BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced India's 15-man squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup, in India, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir stated that he would prefer to have Ishan Kishan over KL Rahul in the playing XI for the marquee event. Kishan has been in top form, having scored four successive half-centuries, whereas Rahul is yet to get some match practice despite being named in the CWC squad. He will make his comeback in the Super Four round of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023, which will give a clear picture of his fitness going ahead.&nbsp;

Analysing the World Cup squad, Gambhir made his preference known by backing Kishan and said on Star Sports, "Tell me something, what is more important to win a championship — name or form? If Rohit (Sharma) or Virat (Kohli) had scored something similar (four consecutive fifties), would you still say that KL Rahul would replace them?" He further pointed out. "The point is, when you're gearing up to win the World Cup, you don't see the name, you judge by their form. You choose the player who can perform and win you the World Cup."

Gambhir added, "I feel Ishan Kishan has done everything he needs to do to be a frontrunner," he further added. Just because he is Ishan Kishan and hasn't played a lot of international cricket, you're saying that KL Rahul should play before him," he said. "But if Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma were in place of Ishan Kishan, would KL Rahul be able to replace them? The answer is 'no'."

Kishan is riding high on his impressive 82 in India's Asia Cup opener versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 02 in Kandy. Coming to bat at No. 5, the left-hander stitched a handy 138-run fifth-wicket stand with Hardik Pandya (87) to take India to 265 all-out in 48.5 overs. Meanwhile, Rahul has been superb for India in the middle-order since early 2020. At No. 5, he averages a healthy 53 with 742 runs in 18 innings along with a ton and seven half-centuries.

It will be interesting to see India's team combination going forward, with both Kishan and Rahul's availability. After the CWC squad announcement, captain Rohit Sharma did not rule out playing both the keeper-batters together in the XI. At present, India is gearing up for its first game in the Super Four round of the Asia Cup, where they once again take on Pakistan on September 10 (Sunday) in Colombo.

'If Kohli or Rohit were...': Gambhir prefers Kishan over Rahul in India's XI after CWC '23 squad announcement

On Wednesday (September 06), Cricket Australia announced a strong 15-man squad of Pat Cummins &amp; Co. for the forthcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition, which kicks off in India on October 05.&nbsp;The preliminary team, which was revealed in August, originally comprised 18 players. However, it has now been further trimmed with the likes of Aaron Hardie, Nathan Ellis and Tanveer Sangha missing out.

Cummins -- who is out of the ongoing South Africa tour due to injury -- will lead the team, with additional support from the pace duo of Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc. Sean Abbott has been identified as the&nbsp;reserve&nbsp;backup fast bowler. Two spinners, Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa, will look to add variety to the bowling attack.

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag on Tuesday (September 5) called for adding 'Bharat' to Team India's ODI World Cup Jersey. Sehwag took to his official account on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to request BCCI secretary Jay Shah to implement the changes ahead of the mega event, which is to be held in India from October 5 to November 19.&nbsp;

Sehwag wrote on X, "Team India nahin #TeamBharat. (Not Team India, this is Team Bharat). This World Cup as we cheer for Kohli, Rohit, Bumrah, Jaddu, may we have Bharat in our hearts and the players wear jersey which has “Bharat” @JayShah. Here's the post:&nbsp;

Kane&nbsp;Williamson&nbsp;will captain New Zealand at next month's World Cup after making "sufficient progress" in his recovery from a knee injury, the country's cricket board said on Monday. Williamson&nbsp;underwent surgery after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the Indian Premier League in early April, which had cast doubt over his participation in the tournament.

The 33-year-old had been given two weeks to prove his fitness for the Oct. 5- Nov. 19 50-overs World Cup in India. "Williamson&nbsp;has made sufficient progress in his recovery to allow him to be included in the squad for the tournament starting in October," NZC said in a statement.

New Zealand coach Gary Stead praised&nbsp;Williamson's "phenomenal dedication", adding: "He's left no stone unturned in trying to get back playing cricket at the highest level. We are delighted to be in a place to select him.

"At the same time, he's also kept perspective about his recovery and hasn't wanted to rush or force his way back too early. As we've previously said, it's great he wants to play cricket for New Zealand in the long term." However, Stead stressed that there was no clear timeline for&nbsp;Williamson's return.

"As we've said throughout this process we want to give&nbsp;Kane&nbsp;every bit of available time to aid his recovery," Stead said. "The World Cup is not a short tournament and we will continue to monitor his progress over the next month ahead of the first tournament match."

The NZC added that the rest of the squad would be announced on Sept. 11. New Zealand play England in the final Twenty20 international of a four-match series on Tuesday, before facing the same opponents in a four-match one-day international series.

Kane Williamson set to captain New Zealand in CWC 2023 after progress in injury recovery

On Tuesday (September 5), India announced a strong 15-man squad for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition. After the squad was announced, Indian captain Rohit Sharma snapped at a reporter during the press conference, in the presence of BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Rohit was&nbsp;asked about the public perception when India play in the world tournaments. To this, Hitman lost his cool and gave a fitting response.

The 36-year-old Rohit stated, "I have said this so many times. We don't care what happens on the outside. All the players in our team are professional. Don't ask me such questions. I won't ask such questions. It doesn't make sense to talk about such things. Our focus is something else and we do not care about these things."

I won't answer those questions: Rohit snaps at reporter during press conference after India name CWC squad

Team India announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup, at home, starting on October 5. From India's current 18-man Asia Cup squad, including a reserve player, the trio of Prasidh Krishna, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma have been dropped as the rest 15 made the cut in the final squad. It is to be noted that all the teams have until September 28 to make any changes to the squad. Thus, some late changes might take place.&nbsp;

After BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar named India's final 15 in a press conference along with captain Rohit Sharma in Sri Lanka, the duo took some questions from the reporters.

Sympathising with the dropped players, Rohit said, "There are no surprises and you can only get 15 in. Some of the guys will be disappointed. I have gone through it and I know how it feels. We have good all-round options and this is the best 15 we could get."

It is to be noted that Rohit played his first 50-over World Cup in 2015 as he was left out of MS Dhoni-led India's victorious squad from the 2011 edition. Back in 2011, when India co-hosted the mega event with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Hitman was overlooked as his competitors Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina got a look-in.

However, Rohit revamped in style and had a decent run in 2015 whereas came to his best in the 2019 edition, ending as the highest run-getter (648 runs with five centuries) in England and Wales. Thus, the 36-year-old has gone through a lot of ups and downs and will surely lend a supporting hand to the players who failed to make the cut.

Rohit insisted that India are yet to find their right combination and added, "I have not thought about plans yet. The problem of plenty is a good problem to have. We have to see who is in form and who our opposition is. We need to see what the best possible combination could be. If someone misses out, then so be it. This keeps happening. You have to make tough calls for the team."

India will open their campaign versus Australia in Chennai&nbsp;on October 8 whereas the CWC 2023 opener will be held on October 5 with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad.

At present, the Men in Blue are gearing up for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2023 edition, where they will take on Pakistan on Sunday (September 10).&nbsp;

I know how it feels: Rohit Sharma sympathises with dropped players after India name 15-man squad for CWC '23

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced their 15-man squad for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 with KL Rahul making the cut. The batsman is expected to play wicketkeeper's role as well and chief selector Ajit Agarkar said that the player is looking good and "we're happy to have him."

"We had a couple of fitness issues that we had to look at, but all three [Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer], who had long-term injuries have come through," Agarkar said during the squad-announcement press conference. "KL is looking good. We feel this gives us the best balance to try and do well. With KL, he was part of the camp in Bangalore, he looked really good there, has got over his niggle. He played a couple of games over the last two days. I think he kept for 50 overs and batted for around 50 overs too, so he looks good and we're happy to have him."

As for the bowlers, India's pace attack looks settled with Jasprit Bumrah leading the attack, joined by Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj alongside Shardul Thakur and all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Among spinners, India decided to go with one specialist spinner in Kuldeep Yadav, with Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel being other two options.

Agarkar also spoke about selecting Jadeja and Patel as both of them have same skill set - bringing the ball into the left-handers.

"Clearly, there will be discussions given we have both Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel who spin the ball into left-handers," Agarkar said. "[But] both give us depth in batting. Kuldeep takes the ball away. In 50 overs cricket, perhaps you would ideally want an off-spinner but this gives us the best balance. Seamers tend to bowl a lot more in ODIs as compared to T20 cricket, and perhaps you're a little more under pressure if you don't have an offie, so we're happy with the guys we have."

While the deadline to announce the squad is September 5, teams can make changes to it until September 28 without needing approval from the ICC. The World Cup starts October 5 in India with final scheduled to be played on November 19.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced their 15-man squad for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 with KL Rahul making the cut. The batsman is expected to play wicketkeeper's role as well and chief selector Ajit Agarkar said that the player is looking good and "we're happy to have him." "We had a couple of fitness issues that we had to look at, but all three [Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer], who had long-term injuries have come through," Agarkar said during the squad-announcement press conference. "KL is looking good. We feel this gives us the best balance to try and do well. With KL, he was part of the camp in Bangalore, he looked really good there, has got over his niggle. He played a couple of games over the last two days. I think he kept for 50 overs and batted for around 50 overs too, so he looks good and we're happy to have him." Also Read: BCCI announces India's 15-man squad for 2023 ODI World Cup, KL Rahul makes the cut As for the bowlers, India's pace attack looks settled with Jasprit Bumrah leading the attack, joined by Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj alongside Shardul Thakur and all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Among spinners, India decided to go with one specialist spinner in Kuldeep Yadav, with Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel being other two options. Here's the #TeamIndia squad for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 🙌#CWC23 pic.twitter.com/EX7Njg2Tcv — BCCI (@BCCI) September 5, 2023 × Agarkar also spoke about selecting Jadeja and Patel as both of them have same skill set - bringing the ball into the left-handers. Seamers tend to bowl a lot more in ODIs as compared to T20 cricket, and perhaps you're a little more under pressure if you don't have an offie, so we're happy with the guys we have." While the deadline to announce the squad is September 5, teams can make changes to it until September 28 without needing approval from the ICC. The World Cup starts October 5 in India with final scheduled to be played on November 19. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. CWC '23: BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar on selecting KL Rahul; having one specialist spinner in India squad

India and Pakistan will face-off in Group A clash of the Asia Cup on Saturday (September 02) in Kandy. The third game of the ongoing competition, being jointly held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, is eagerly awaited as it will see the resumption of the Indo-Pak rivalry after their epic face-off in last year's 2022 T20 World Cup, where the Men in Blue won a humdinger of a clash on the last ball.

With the Asia Cup being held in the 50-over format, as a dress rehearsal for next month's&nbsp;ODI World Cup in India, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. will know they have their task cut-out to start with a win over No. 1 ranked side Pakistan. Babar Azam-led Men in Green's recent 3-0 whitewash over Afghanistan propelled them to the top spot and they also started the Asia Cup with a bang, thrashing Nepal by 238 runs in the curtain raise at Multan on Wednesday (August 30).

Talking to the reporters in the pre-match presser, Indian captain Rohit acknowledged Pakistan's white-ball success and said on Friday (September 01), "Pakistan have played really well in recent times in T20Is and ODIs. They worked really hard to be No.1, it'll be a good challenge for us tomorrow."

Asia Cup: India captain Rohit Sharma heaps praise on No. 1 ODI side Pakistan ahead of mega battle in Kandy

Bangladesh pace sensation Ebadot Hossain has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI World Cup after sustaining a knee injury. The injury blow will be a major concern for Bangladesh who are already nursing former skipper Tamim Iqbal who will miss the Asia Cup 2023. The big news follows after the Tigers also had Litton Das ruled out of the Asia Cup having failed to recover from a virus. The pacer is required to go under the knife and would be unable to recover in time for the ODI World Cup in India.

<h2>Ebadot to miss World Cup</h2>

"He (Ebadot) will not be available for us in the World Cup," BCB chief selector Minhajul Abedin told Cricbuzz on Wednesday.

"It's a big blow for us as he will require operation for his knee. Following the operation he will certainly take some time for rehabilitation purpose, at least three to four months, so we cannot consider him for World Cup," he said.

Hossain’s initial injury occurred in the Afghanistan series where he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. This forced him to withdraw from the series with Tanzim Sakib being the replacement for Asia Cup. It was initially expected that the 29-year-old would make the squad for the World Cup, but latest reports have seen him get ruled out of the World Cup.

So far the right-arm pacer has played 20 Test matches along with 12 ODIs and four T20Is for Bangladesh. He has scalped 71 international wickets for Bangladesh and could have been a vital tool in the middle overs. In his absence, the bowling responsibilities will rest on the shoulders of Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman and Shoriful Islam.

<h2>What next for Bangladesh?</h2>

Bangladesh immediate concern though will be the Asia Cup where they will start their campaign against Sri Lanka on Thursday, August 31. They are placed in Group B along with Afghanistan, whom they meet on Sunday, September 3. Interestingly, Bangladesh’s World Cup quest begins on Afghanistan on Saturday, October 7 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.

CWC 2023: Pace sensation Ebadot Hossain ruled out with knee injury as Bangladesh suffer major injury blow

Former West Indies legend Vivian Richards has named the bowler who he feels will end up as the leading wicket-taker in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition in India. The forthcoming edition will be held entirely in India and kicks off on October 05, in Ahmedabad, with the defending champions England taking on New Zealand whereas the Rohit Sharma-led home side will start their run on October 08 in Chennai. Richards, who was part of Clive Llyod-led West Indies' title run in 1975 and 1979, feels Pakistan's Shaheen Afridi will return with most wickets in the mega event.

Speaking to the ICC, Richards said, "The leading wicket-taker in the World Cup will be Shaheen Afridi because I have seen him in Pakistan. I spent some time in the PSL and I have seen his massive growth. He is a highly determined individual. He is my man."

Not Bumrah, Starc or Rashid! Richards names THIS pacer to become CWC 2023's leading wicket-taker

Virat Kohli is set to feature in his fourth ODI World Cup when the upcoming 2023 edition kicks off on October 5 in India. At 34, Kohli will leave no stone unturned to help India end their ten-year-long ICC title drought and win the 50-over showpiece event. It is to be noted that India last won the ODI World Cup when the ICC event was co-hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Thus, the home side will be eager to replicate their 2011 heroics. Kohli, who was part of the MS Dhoni-led victorious side in 2011, will aim to bring his experience into play and help Rohit Sharma and Co.

Ahead of the Asia Cup, which starts on August 30 (Wednesday), and will soon be followed by the CWC 2023, Kohli recalled the memories from the 2011 edition and claimed that winning the 50-over championship is his career's highlight.&nbsp;

<h2>'It was stuff from dreams'</h2>

In an event in Bengaluru, Kohli was quoted as saying by PTI, "My career highlight is obviously winning the World Cup in 2011. I was 23 at the time, and I probably didn't understand the magnitude of it. But now at 34, and has played many World Cups, which we haven't been able to win, So, I understand the emotions of all the senior players (in 2011)."

"All the more for Sachin Tendulkar, as it was his last World Cup. He had already played many World Cups by then and to win it in Mumbai, his hometown, was very special for him. I mean, it was stuff from dreams," the former captain opined.

Recalling his entire experience, Kohli said, "I remember the amount of pressure there was on all the players when we were travelling. Thankfully, there was no social media back then. It would have been a nightmare, honestly. But through the airports, it was always just one thing -- we need to win the Cup."

Kohli had a decent run in his first-ever World Cup in 2011. He ended with 282 runs -- including a century and a vital fifty -- and made a crucial 34 in the final where India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets on April 2 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Back then, Dhoni &amp; Co. beat teams such as Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Australia, etc. to win the coveted title for the second time in Indian cricket's history.

Talking about the CWC '23 edition, Rohit-led India will open their campaign on October 08 in Chennai where they face Australia. They will go hard for their third 50-over mega title and Kohli will be desperate to lead the batting department with aplomb. The 34-year-old, with over 25,000 international runs in 501 games, along with 76 hundreds, will be the go-to batter for the Men in Blue.

My career highlight is winning the 2011 ODI World Cup, says Virat Kohli ahead of Asia Cup, CWC '23

Team India, under Rohit Sharma, is set to kick off their Asia Cup 2023 campaign on September 02 when they face arch-rivals Pakistan in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. The continental tournament gets underway on Wednesday (August 30) with co-hosts Pakistan locking horns with Nepal in Multan. After the Asia Cup, to be held in the ODI format, the 50-over World Cup will take place, in India, starting on October 05.

Prior to the Asia Cup and CWC '23, former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar heaped praise on Virat Kohli and pointed out where he becomes 'valuable' for Rohit &amp; Co.&nbsp;

<h2>'I expect Virat to have a great World Cup'</h2>

Speaking to&nbsp;Star Sports&nbsp;in the lead-up to the 50-over Asia Cup, Manjrekar was optimistic of Kohli having a great run in the upcoming World Cup.&nbsp;"Great player who has had a great journey. But people change, players change and skills change as well. At this stage, you see that Rohit Sharma, his greatest skill and impact is visible in Test cricket. I expect Virat to have a great World Cup," Manjrekar mentioned.

Further, Manjrekar added, "With his current state of play, you would think that 50-overs is just the right format for him. On the big stage, he has done it for India on many occasions. You get excited about many young and rising players. But on a big night, we need a player, who has been there, done that. That is where Virat becomes so valuable for India."

To back Manjrekar's claims, the two-time ODI world champions India will bank on Kohli's experience as they aim to lift the forthcoming ICC event, to be held on home soil. Back in the 2011 edition, co-hosted by India, Bangladesh and eventual runners-up Sri Lanka, the MS Dhoni-led Men in Blue ended as the champions with a young Kohli part of the historic squad.&nbsp;

Thus, Kohli's experience of having won an ODI World Cup will be essential not only for captain -- who was snubbed for the 2011 edition -- but for the entire Indian unit. At present, the 34-year-old will hope for a miraculous campaign in the continental tournament, which kicks off on Wednesday.&nbsp;

A good run in the Asia Cup will keep Kohli in terrific mindset before the World Cup commences.

This is where he becomes so valuable: Manjrekar on Virat Kohli ahead of India's Asia Cup, CWC '23 campaigns

Virat Kohli has had a glorious run in international cricket. He recently completed 15 years at the highest level, where he has already amassed over 25,000 runs and his century tally stands at 76, next only to Sachin Tendulkar (100). Over the years, the former Indian captain has played innumerable knocks which can be termed memorable.&nbsp;

Kohli's rise was evident after India's 2011 ODI World Cup win and even when he has not been at his best, he has continued to pile vital runs. Recently, former Australian captain Ian Chappell recalled Kohli's initial big success -- which came during India's tour of Australia in 2011/12 -- and termed his 141, in the Adelaide Test, as a masterclass.

<h2>'With the evergreen Tendulkar still plying his trade, Kohli showed glimpses of his talent'</h2>

"In 2012, with the evergreen Tendulkar still plying his trade, Kohli showed glimpses of his talent, also at the WACA ground, with a promising 44 and 75. His skilful batting against a good Australian pace attack hinted at his talent, and when he then followed it with an excellent century in Adelaide, while others around him failed, it was widely accepted he would be the next outstanding Indian batter," Chappell wrote for&nbsp;ESPNCricinfo.

"Appropriately, two years later at Adelaide Oval again, the newly appointed India captain scored two sublime centuries to almost snatch a memorable victory for his side. Kohli's second-innings 141, in particular, on a pitch that encouraged spin, was a masterpiece and with a little more help from his team-mates would have resulted in a spectacular Indian victory," the former cricketer further asserted.

Chappell added, "Despite Kohli's amazing record and his strong leadership, it was that second-innings century in Adelaide in 2014 that cemented his undoubted skill. He hit 16 fours and one six and scored at the superb rate of 80 runs per 100 balls on a pitch that suited Nathan Lyon's sharp-turning off-breaks. Kohli's ability to successfully play the cover drive - the toughest shot for a right-hander on a turning pitch - was exceptional and severely frustrated Australia's charge for victory."

The Adelaide Test was the series opener of the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia. Back then, the then Indian Test captain MS Dhoni was injured and, hence, Kohli led the side for the first time in the purest format. He led from the front with twin centuries in the match -- 115 and 141 during a 364-run chase -- but couldn't guide India to a stunning victory.&nbsp;

The two memorable knocks consolidated Kohli's Test spot and he went on to lead India in 68 Tests, winning 40 of them (most by any Indian). To date, he remains India's go-to-batter across formats -- despite not being in the T20I scheme of things since last year's World Cup -- and will hold the key for the Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue in the upcoming Asia Cup (from August 30) and the home ODI World Cup, starting on October 05.

'Virat Kohli's 141 in Adelaide was a masterpiece': Ian Chappell heaps praise on former Indian captain

Rohit Sharma-led India are gearing up for a litmus test in the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be hosted jointly by Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The continental tournament gets underway on August 30 with Pakistan hosting Nepal in Multan whereas the Men in Blue will open their campaign versus arch-rivals Babar Azam-led Men in Green on September 02 in Pallekele in the Island nation.

The Asia Cup holds a lot of significance as it will soon be followed by the 50-over ODI World Cup&nbsp;on home soil, which starts on October on 05 in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;Thus, the upcoming two multi-nation events will certainly define Rohit's captaincy tenure.

While India have a strong squad for the Asia Cup, Rohit-led Indian team management have a lot of decisions to make. The comeback duo, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer will be closely monitored in the Asia Cup and their run will help the team decide whether to include them in the CWC '23 edition or not. Furthermore, it will be interesting to see if Yuzvendra Chahal makes the cut in the World Cup squad, having been overlooked for the Asia Cup.&nbsp;

Recently, Rohit stated that it's not about his favourite or coach Rahul Dravid's&nbsp;favourite to be in the squad but to get the players who will fit the&nbsp;conditions and team combination. Speaking to PTI, Hitman said, "Me, coaches, and selectors, take into account all factors like opposition, surfaces, our strengths, their weaknesses, and then reach a common ground. There is every chance that we will not be perfect always. At the end of the day, few individuals make decisions, and we are bound to make mistakes as humans. We won't always be right."

Hitman further opined, "'We have tried to communicate with the players after every selection and playing XI that has been announced. We talk to them face to face, one-on-one why they have not been picked. Sometimes, I try and put myself in their shoes. When I wasn't picked in 2011, it was such a heart-breaking moment for me and I felt what was left after being dropped from a World Cup squad?"

<h2>'I remember Yuvraj calling me to his room and....'</h2>

Rohit recalled the time when he was dropped for the 2011 ODI World Cup. He revealed how former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh helped him overcome the slump. "I was sad and sitting in my room and didn't know what to do next. I remember Yuvi calling me to his room and taking me out for dinner," Rohit asserted.

''He explained to me how it feels when you are left out. He told me, 'the best thing is that you have so many years in front of you. As we play in the World Cup, you take this chance to work hard on your game, and skills and make a comeback. There is no way that you won't play for India or not get a chance to play in the World Cup'."

Despite not being part of Dhoni-led India's victorious campaign in 2011, Rohit has redeemed himself in style and was the leading run-getter in the 2019 edition (648 runs with five hundreds). He will look for another prolific campaign in the forthcoming edition and help India lift the mega title at home.

It is to be noted that the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selectors have to name India's&nbsp;provisional World Cup squad&nbsp;in a week's time.&nbsp;

'The best thing is....': Indian captain Rohit Sharma recalls Yuvraj Singh's words after CWC '11 snub

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is given a deadline to prove his fitness for the Cricket World Cup 2023 which starts&nbsp;October 5. With all teams needing to submit their 15-man squads to the ICC by September 5, with a clause of making changes until September 28, Williamson has about two weeks to attain complete fitness and get into reckoning for the mega event.

Playing for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023, Williamson tore his ACL during the opener against Chennai Super Kings on March 31, and at that point, it looked like his chances of recovering in time for the World Cup were bleak. However, following surgery and scheduled rehab, Kane returned to the nets earlier this month, facing some throw-downs.&nbsp;

Kane's progress is encouraging, and head coach Gary Stead feels the same, saying they would give every opportunity to the batter to prove his fitness for the marquee event.

"[We've] got about two weeks from now until we name that side," New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said. "Going to give him every chance and use that full amount of time.

"He's in full rehab mode; he's back batting in the nets again, which is great to see. He's progressing really well, but again, there's a lot of work for him still to do to make sure he gets to where we need him to be,” the head coach added.

<h2>‘Kane can still travel to India'</h2>

Given what he brings to the table, the New Zealand camp will perhaps do everything possible to tag him along. Even if it means Kane getting included despite not clearing the fitness test, and then by the time the World Cup begins, he could attain complete fitness. Or, he can be part of the travelling reserves – but in that case, someone from the original squad needs to get injured for Kane to get roped into the side team for the CWC matches.

"They are all the things we are weighing up right now," Stead said. "There's a chance that even if Kane was named that he wouldn't be available right at the start of the tournament. But he also might be, and he also might not be ready.

"It's still a little bit of crystal-ball gazing [about] where he will be at. Yes, of course, we want him at the World Cup, but there is that bigger picture in mind that we want Kane Williamson fit for the rest of his career,” Stead said.

Meanwhile, New Zealand will travel to England for four T20Is and as many ODIs, starting August 30.

Both these teams will face off in the World Cup 2023 opener on October 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Ahmedabad likely to host Cricket World Cup 2023 opening ceremony on October 4

Former India coach Sanjay Bangar warned Team India to consider KL Rahul in the Playing XI only if he is fit to play as a wicketkeeper-batter. The veteran Indian star returned to the team for the Asia Cup 2023 as he tries to prove his fitness for the upcoming ODI World Cup. However, there are doubts over Rahul’s fitness as few predict he won’t be able to keep wickets.

<h2>Bangar opines on Rahul’s role</h2>

"I think keeper batter because no one bowls in the top 5 of Team India, so it means if you want 6 bowling options you should have a player in your top 5 who can bowl or he should be a wicket-keeper batsman. So, I feel if KL Rahul plays the role of a wicket-keeper batsman, I believe then only he should be considered in the playing XI because in that way the team's balance will be maintained," Bangar told Star Sports.

According to Bangar, India should consider players with utility roles in the Playing XI who offer batting and bowling options. The Indian team’s utility factor could play a major role in determining the team’s success during the World Cup. For Rahul, he thinks he should come into the team as a wicketkeeper-batter and offer more to the team.

India have the services of Ishan Kishan, who is most likely to make the ODI World Cup squad as a backup if not first-choice wicketkeeper. Kishan is in great form for the team and offers batting along with donning the keeping gloves. India already have players like Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli as only batting options and are not relying on their bowling services.

<h2>Who could miss out on World Cup squad?</h2>

Currently, the 17-member squad for the Asia Cup will have to prove their worth before it is trimmed to 15 players for the ODI World Cup. The deadline to announce the World Cup squad is soon approaching as the selectors are keeping a close eye on the developments of Shreyas Iyer and Rahul. The selectors are likely to drop one batter and one bowler from the Asia Cup squad to make the final World Cup contingent.

If both Rahul and Iyer prove their fitness in the Asia Cup, Tilak Varma looks to be the natural option to be dropped for the World Cup while Prasidh Krishna could also have to sit at home for the big event in India.

Kishan is in great form for the team and offers batting along with donning the keeping gloves. India already have players like Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli as only batting options and are not relying on their bowling services. CWC 2023: Former coach worried over batting balance in middle order, says 'if KL Rahul plays the role...'

Former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis has predicted the highest run-getter in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023&nbsp;being held in India. The forthcoming mega event will kick off in the subcontinent on October 05 with the defending champions Jos Buttler-led England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad whereas hosts Rohit Sharma-led India face Australia, in Chennai, on October 08.

Kallis, a legend who represented South Africa in 166 Tests, 328 ODIs and 25 T20Is, feels England captain Buttler will end up as the leading run-scorer in the upcoming edition. In the last edition, in England and Wales, Rohit Sharma ended with 648 runs -- most by any batter.

"I think Jos Butler will be the leading run scorer. An outside call, but I fancy him in those conditions. Along with England having a good World Cup, I think, um, me, he's going to be the one guy that stands up," said Kallis while speaking to the ICC.

Buttler has played 165 ODIs for the Three Lions, scoring&nbsp;4,647 runs at a strike rate of&nbsp;117.97 along with 11 tons and 24 fifties. He has a lot of experience of playing in India, thanks to his stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he plays for the Rajasthan Royals (RR). Overall, he&nbsp;has scored 3,223 runs from 96 IPL matches, at an impressive strike-rate of 148.32.&nbsp;

However, Buttler doesn't have a good ODI record in India -- having managed&nbsp;83 runs in eight matches so far at an average of&nbsp;11. Thus, he has a task to improve his record and help England successfully defend their title. The one-time winners have a plethora of superstars in their line-up, such as Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Moeen Ali, etc. Having already led England to the championship in his only ICC event as captain, during the 2022 T20 World Cup, Buttler will feel confident leading the English line-up in the upcoming big-ticket event.

Other batters who can end up as the highest run-getter in CWC '23 are Indian captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Babar Azam, Quinton de Kock, David Warner, etc.

CWC '23: SA legend Jacques Kallis predicts THIS English star to be the leading run-getter

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has made a big statement regarding&nbsp;Mohammed Siraj. The ex-cricketer believes India cannot play Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna ahead of Siraj and the pacer needs to be in the playing XI anyhow during the upcoming home ODI World Cup. Siraj has been exceptional for India across formats, especially with early breakthroughs in ODIs, and has a solid record in Asia.&nbsp;

Chopra highlighted Siraj's record in Asia, which is better than outside the subcontinent, and heaped praise on him. On his YouTube channel, Chopra lauded Siraj and&nbsp;also praised Jasprit Bumrah, who has recently made his international comeback&nbsp;after a long injury layoff&nbsp;during the Ireland T20Is.

<h2>'You cannot play anyone. You will have to play Siraj only'</h2>

Chopra said, "Mohammed Siraj is brilliant. He has had a short career. 43 wickets in 24 matches at an average of 20.7 and an economy rate of 4.78. They are better than both Bumrah's and Shami's numbers. In Asia, his average becomes 16.57 and economy rate is 4.51. You cannot play anyone. You will have to play Siraj only."

He further opined, "His numbers in Asia are better than his numbers outside Asia. So, people who were talking about whether Shardul Thakur or Prasidh Krishna can be played instead of Siraj, you cannot play anyone. You will have to play Siraj only. You should play him."

At present, the Indian players are gearing up for the forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 edition, to be jointly held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which kicks off on August 30. India play their tournament opener versus arch-rivals Pakistan on September 02 in Pallekele, Sri Lanka. The likes of Siraj, Krishna, Shardul and Bumrah are part of India's 17-man squad and will be desperate for good performances as the continental tournament will be followed by the ODI World Cup at home, starting on October 05.

Siraj should play ahead of Shardul Thakur or Prasidh Krishna in CWC '23, feels former Indian opener

Former India player Saba Karim has backed Sanju Samson for a place in the ODI World Cup despite his omission from the 17-member squad for the Asia Cup 2023. The Indian team selected for the Asia Cup on Monday, August 21 saw the return of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer in the squad. Samson's omission&nbsp;paved the way for the return of Rahul, but according to Karim, he is still in the reckoning for the ODI World Cup owing to any fitness issues surrounding Rahul.

<h2>Karim backs Samson</h2>

"Sanju Samson remains in the reckoning. In case KL Rahul is not fit, then who do the selectors look at? So Samson comes in as a replacement for KL Rahul," Karim said. "So that is why those 40 valuable runs in the 2nd T20I outing at number four was a huge positive for India."

Samson has endured a mixed fortune in recent times that has seen him score one fifty since his return to the national side for the West Indies. He has been unfortunate not to have batted at times while he missed out on scoring big during the West Indies and Ireland tour. However, with competition for a regular wicketkeeper, Samson remains in the reckoning for a spot in the team. The Indian team has three options in the wicketkeepers department Ishan Kishan, Rahul, and Samson.

Currently, Samson is down the pecking order behind Ishan and Rahul, but the latter’s fitness will remain a key factor. If Rahul is not fully fit for the ODI World Cup, Samson remains the obvious choice to make the Indian team. However, if both Ishan and Rahul make the 15-member squad for the ODI World Cup, Samson will probably miss out on the plane.

<h2>Prasidh Krishna to miss out on ODI World Cup?</h2>

Karim has also not ruled out Prasidh Krishna from the ODI World Cup as he thinks he has a better chance of making the squad. Unlike Samson, Krishna is in the Asia Cup squad, but close sources from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) suggest he and Tilak Varma will be trimmed to finalise the ODI World Cup squad.

"Plus Prasidh Krishna, as we have always talked about, good to see him come back. I think this season, this series performance compared to last year when India toured Ireland was much better," said Karim.

The selector’s panel led by Ajit Agarkar will have to announce the ODI World Cup squad before the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) deadline of September 5.

CWC 2023: Former India player backs Sanju Samson for ODI World Cup berth despite Asia Cup omission

Former India chief selector Kris Srikkanth has hailed the potential of talented youngster Tilak Varma after a mature showing in his debut series against the West Indies in July and August. However, the legendary former opener feels Varma should not be in the Playing XI for the World Cup as he lacks experience and should be groomed in the ODI series against big teams. Varma scored 173 runs in five T20I matches during the West Indies tour before getting a reality check in Ireland with just one run in two innings.

<h2>Kris Srikkanth’s take on Tilak</h2>

"Tilak Varma, the point that I'm making was also conveyed by Ganguly. Don't give him a debut in a big tournament. First, let him play a few ODI series. Ganguly also had the same point of view."

"Tilak Varma has fantastic potential. Tilak Varma is a brilliant player. But don't let him be in the playing lineup for the World Cup. Let him play in a few ODI series and then the upcoming T20 World Cup and groom him till the next ODI World Cup. There is something called grooming a youngster."

After bursting onto the scene during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season, Tilak Varma has attracted the attention of the cricketing fraternity. He was a surprise inclusion in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2023 and is also in the fray to be a part of the ODI World Cup.&nbsp; The Mumbai Indians star was touted for a call-up to the Indian team after impressing in IPL 2023 as well.

<h2>Could Varma make World Cup squad?</h2>

Currently, the southpaw is down the pecking order and is likely to miss out on a place in the squad for the Asia Cup. The selectors'&nbsp;panel led by Ajit Agrakar is likely to go with the same Asia Cup squad for the World Cup, with a couple of players missing out. Varma looks like the likely option as he comes in as a third-choice backup&nbsp;in the middle order.

Varma along with Prasidh Krishna are likely to miss out on the ODI World Cup squad, but&nbsp;any injury to any player from the proposed squad could see the doors open for them. India’s squad for the ODI World Cup will be announced before September 5.

CWC 2023: Former World Cup winner hails Tilak Varma's impact but suggests 'don't let him be in the Playing XI'

Star India batter Shubman Gill has opened up on the valuable presence of skipper Rohit Sharma at the top as they prepare for an important next three months for the national side. The Indian team is gearing up for the penultimate battle before the ODI World Cup as they prepare for the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. Gill, who is expected to play a key role in the Indian team for both tournaments, highlighted the importance of Rohit before and how he has helped him enjoy his cricket.

<h2>Gill full of praise for Rohit</h2>

"It feels great to be able to open up with him, especially knowing that all the focus is on him. He's someone who likes the other batters to go and just express himself and play the way they want to play the game. So in that nature, he gives the players full freedom for how they want to express their game," Gill told ICC.

Gill has been in superb form in 2023, having scored eight hundreds in all tournaments including the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, it is with the national team where he has enjoyed the presence of skipper Rohit, who has helped him excel and enjoy his cricket. The talisman from Punjab has scored five international hundreds in 2023 while he scored a ton at the end of last year against Bangladesh.

<h2>Gill’s superb run of form</h2>

Gill has all but cemented his place in the Indian team and is expected to open the innings alongside Rohit in the Asia Cup and in the build-up to the ODI World Cup. Gill is the favoured batter to open along with Rohit, while Ishan Kishan is another option who can partner the Gujarat Titans man.

So far, in 27 ODIs for the national team, Gill&nbsp;has scored 1437 runs for India with a best of 208 against New Zealand in January. He so far has four hundreds and six fifties with the national team and averages 62.47 in the format. Interestingly, he could join the likes of Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh to win both the U-19 and senior 50-over World Cups. Gill was the Player of the Tournament in 2018 when India won their fourth title at the junior level.

CWC 2023: Shubman Gill full of praise for THIS key batter, says 'he gives players full freedom'

Former Australia great Adam Gilchrist has underlined the importance of David Warner in the side as the team prepares for a crucial next few months. Warner, 36, now in the twilight of his career, could be a vital tool for Australia, according to Gilchrist, despite him facing competition from Mitchell Marsh for the opening spot. The Aussies will have two ODI series before the World Cup begins to test and experiment with their side.

<h2>Gilchrist wants Warner in the Playing XI</h2>

"You don't take (Warner) if you're not going to start with him and open with him," Gilchrist was quoted by cricket.com.au.

"He well and truly warrants being picked in that World Cup squad and the starting XI. He's a World Cup winner. I think his knowledge and experience in India will be vitally important to the Aussies doing well.”

The left-hand batter from New South Wales missed the ODI series against India in March with an elbow injury. Marsh deputised for him as an opener and was seen in a brilliant form that earned him the Player of the Series award. However, there are fears that Warner despite being in the squad for the World Cup could miss out in the Playing XI.

"He (Warner) doesn't mind being backed into a corner," Gilchrist said.

"That's probably not the way he always wants it to play out but he knows how to throw a counter-punch here and there."

The Aussies are scheduled to face South Africa in a three-match T20I series followed by a five-match ODI series in August and September. They will then head to India for a three-match ODI series followed by the ODI World Cup. Skipper Pat Cummins won’t be available for the South Africa series but is expected to travel there while Steve Smith will also miss the series. Both are nursing a wrist injury, but are hopeful of returning to the national side for the India series.

In the absence of Cummins during the South Africa tour, Marsh will take charge of the side. Australia will start their ODI World Cup campaign against India on Sunday, October 8 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Gilchrist wants Warner in the Playing XI "You don't take (Warner) if you're not going to start with him and open with him," Gilchrist was quoted by cricket.com.au. "He well and truly warrants being picked in that World Cup squad and the starting XI. He's a World Cup winner. I think his knowledge and experience in India will be vitally important to the Aussies doing well.” The left-hand batter from New South Wales missed the ODI series against India in March with an elbow injury.
