Anthony Elanga`s 80th-minute goal gave Manchester United a 1-1 draw away to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie. The result flattered United, who did very little in the game played on Wednesday night, but at the same time, it was a punishment for Atletico for not taking chances and their tendency to defend a narrow lead.

The game was just seven minutes old when Atletico took the lead. United half-cleared a corner, but Renan Lodi whipped the ball back into the area for Joao Felix to race in ahead of Harry Maguire and head the ball past David de Gea and in off the post.

United were struggling to connect in attack, while Atletico looked threatening every time they pushed forward, although having taken the lead, they were content to sit deep and look to play on the break, reports Xinhua.

At the half-hour mark, De Gea was United`s saviour as he denied Angel Correa when the striker was through on goal after robbing Raphael Varane, who moments afterward again gave the ball away to Geoffrey Kondogbia.

As the session progressed, things got increasingly scrappy with Cristiano Ronaldo, booed every time he touched the ball, coming in for some rough treatment, before Sime Vrsaljko rattled the crossbar with a header when he should have scored following a cross from Lodi.

The 19-year-old Elanga also came on for Marcus Rashford in the 76th minute, and he levelled the scores within four minutes. Bruno Fernandes found a rare gap in the Atletico defense and the youngster rolled the ball across Jan Oblak and into the back of the net.

Ronaldo, who remains very active on Instagram, also took to his official handle to thank his fans on his special day. He captioned the post saying, "Life is a roller coaster. Hard work, high speed, urgent goals, demanding expectations… But in the end, it all comes down to family, love, honesty, friendship, values that make it all worth it. Thanks for all the messages! 37 and counting!"

Cristiano Ronaldo's arrival at Manchester United at the beginning of the ongoing season was seen as the start of something special at Old Trafford. Having finished second just behind arch-rivals Manchester City last season, United were tipped to take the season by a storm with a squad full of some of the best talents in the league.

United started the season brilliantly with big wins in the Premier League against Leeds United and Newcastle before making a winning start in the Champions League as well. United were looking right on track before results started to go downhill against former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The club legend was asked to leave following a humiliating 4-1 defeat against Watford.

United were 12 points behind league leaders Chelsea when Solskjaer was sacked. The Norweigan has been replaced by German coach Ralph Rangnick, who has been appointed as an interim manager by United and will serve in a consultancy role for a further two years. United enjoyed a great run of games under Rangnick before suffering their first defeat in his reign against Wolves in the Premier League.

There were reports of discontent in the United dressing room following Ronaldo's arrival at his old club while some experts also claimed the Portuguese has created an imbalance in the squad. At 36, Ronaldo might not be the prolific goal-scorer that he was in his peak but still is one of the fittest footballers in the world and has been among the goals consistently for the Red Devils.

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov rubbished the claims of Ronaldo bringing imbalance to the United squad and said the Portuguese legend is a leader on and off the field.Berbatov, who spent a year playing with Ronaldo at United, said the youngsters at the club should try and learn from the 36-year-old, who has won everything there is to be in club football and is still going strong at the age of 36.

"This is something you always hear in football. When a superstar, a legend, one of the best ever comes to a team the focus immediately shifts on him. Whether he plays well, scores goals or not, the spotlight will always be on Cristiano. But I don't agree he has brought imbalance in the squad," Berbatov said in an exclusive interview with WION.

"When you have someone like him, you need to find a way to get the best out of him. Young players should take advice from him, check how he trains and prepares. I spent a year with him at United and I know how professional he is.

Sometimes he will not play, when he is rested but when he plays he scores goals and draws defenders towards him and makes free spaces for other forwards. He is a bonus player to have and I hope they will continue getting the best out of him not only on the pitch but the dressing room too because he is a leader," he added.

United have endured a difficult phase in the Premier League recently but have managed to bounce back well and are currently in a comfortable position to finish in the top four. United have 38 points from 22 matches so far this season and are placed fourth on the points table with two games in hand to close the gap on 3rd-placed Chelsea, who have 47 points in 24 matches.

Berbatov believes United are in a decent position at the moment in terms of bagging a top-four finish this season and that Rangnick has done a good job in his time so far at the club as an interim manager.

"I think at the moment they (United) are in a great position because they are close to the teams in the top four. They have two games in hand as well to play which is a great situation for them," said the Bulgarian, who scored 48 goals in 108 appearances for United.

"Yes we have not managed to win the league in the years after Sir Alex Ferguson but let's not forget that was Sir Alex Ferguson, 25 years in charge and it's very difficult to replace the man.

But this season, I have the feeling that slowly but surely we will be in a better position than the last season. Ralph Rangnick is now in charge and he has a job to do, which at the moment I think he is doing okay. Ronaldo is also in the team, it's tough but as I said before in the coming games if we can manage to win 1-0, 1-0..which is a champion's result then they can climb higher this season," he added.

Indian football can benefit from grassroots development: Berbatov

The Bulgarian, who played for Kerala Blasters in the Indian Super League (ISL) for one season, believes Indian football has a long way to go. He has joined hands with the 'United we Play' initiative which aims to provide a platform to the young and budding footballers in India to play the game professionally and make a name for themselves.

Berbatov believes the development of young players at the grassroots level can help Indian footballers bridge the gap and play in the elite European leagues in the future.

"I think when you have young talent, and you spend time to develop them then it's only natural and fair to give them a chance to show what they can do in the men's team (Indian team)," said the former Manchester United striker.

"With the United We Play initiative we try to give them that platform. You basically say, we trust you, we want you to develop your skills and hopefully one day you can go on to play for the teams you want to play for. Indian football can benefit a lot from grassroots development and some of these players can make a jump to the European leagues soon," he added.

Exclusive! Cristiano Ronaldo is a leader, Man Utd youngsters should learn from him: Dimitar Berbatov

Manchester United returned to the top of the table on Monday but not the one they were hoping for as they were named the club with the biggest transfer losses in the last decade, splashing out more than one billion euros ($1.14 billion) on players. A study published by Switzerland-based independent research group CIES Football Observatory revealed United had a net spend of 1.075 billion euros since 2012, spending 1.545 billion on transfers while making 470 million back in player sales.

United broke the Premier League transfer record to sign Paul Pogba in 2016 for 89.5 million pounds ($120.89 million) but are set to make no return on the French midfielder, who has failed to meet expectations and can leave for free at the end of the season when his contract expires.
Other costly yet unsuccessful signings include Anthony Martial, signed for 36 million pounds in 2015, and Donny van de Beek, who cost the club 40 million in 2020. Both players left on loan last month, for Sevilla and Everton, respectively.

Their local rivals Manchester City came second with a net spend of 984 million euros, splashing out more than United with 1.699 billion but bringing in 715 million from sales. Paris St Germain were third with a net spend of 941 million.

Barcelona were fourth in the list with a far lower net spend of 650 million, although the Catalans have been in financial turmoil in the last year due to an inflated wage bill, which forced them to part with all-time top scorer Lionel Messi. But while PSG, City and Barcelona at least have plenty of silverware to show for their indulgences in the last decade, United have largely underperformed on the pitch, above all since serial-winning manager Alex Ferguson left in 2013.

On Monday (January 17), the Best FIFA Football Awards 2021 were held. The sixth edition of the Best FIFA Football Awards took place at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich. Polish player Robert Lewandowski walked past Lionel Messi, Mohammed Salah and the likes to be crowned the The Best Men's player 2021. For the unversed, Lewandowski had brought an end to Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's dominance to win the same award last time around as well. Lewandowski has been on a roll in the last few years. Last season in the Bundesliga, the 33-year-old Polish captain had broken the legendary Gerd Mueller's record by scoring 41 goals in a single campaign. In the last calendar year, Lewandowski scored a staggering 69 goals for club and country. With him winning the top award for the second time, Lewandowski has also come at par with Ronaldo (also having two such top honours under his belt). It is to be noted that Lewandowski had lost the Ballon d'Or 2021, however, he has a lot to cherish for with his latest triumph, beating some tough competitors in the process. On the other hand, Paris Saint-Germain's current forward Messi finished second, followed by Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah. Talking about the women's category, Barcelona superstar Alexia Putellas emerged at the top. Putellas has been having a dream run, having already won the Ballon d'Or 2021 earlier. On the occasion, the FIFPro World XI was also announced: Goalkeeper: Gianluigi Donnarumma (AC Milan/Paris Saint-Germain) Defenders: David Alaba (FC Bayern München/Real Madrid CF), Leonardo Bonucci (Juventus FC) and Rúben Dias (Manchester City FC) Midfielders: Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City FC), Jorginho (Chelsea FC) and N’Golo Kanté (Chelsea FC) Forwards: Ronaldo (Juventus FC/Manchester United FC), Erling Haaland (BV Borussia 09 Dortmund), Lewandowski (FC Bayern München) and Messi (FC Barcelona/Paris Saint-Germain)

A new statue of footballing superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has sparked controversy in the Indian state of Goa, with residents objecting to a Portuguese footballer being honoured instead of a player from India. The statue, which was inaugurated on Tuesday, with the aim of inspiring youngsters to emulate the maestro, triggered black flag protests at the site, with protesters accusing the state authorities of neglecting local football legends like Arjuna award winner and former India football team captain Bruno Coutinho, who also hails from Calangute.
However, according to local BJP MLA and Ports Minister, Michael Lobo, the plan to install the 410-415 kg brass statue, depicting the living legend in action, has been in the offing for the last two years.
"This is the first statue of Cristiano Ronaldo in India. This is nothing but to inspire our youth. If you want to take football to the another level, then this is what will inspire boys and girls by looking at him, taking selfies with him.

"We require good infrastructure for our boys and girls to go there and play. Statue is only to inspire. We want good grounds from the government, good infrastructure and good coaches," he said.

"Very disappointed to hear of the statue of Ronaldo being erected. Learn to take pride in our own icons like Samir Naik and Bruno Coutinho," he said.

At the unveiling ceremony, some right-wing demonstrators also alleged that erecting a statue of Ronaldo, a Portuguese national, was an insult to Goa, especially when the state is celebrating its 60th anniversary of liberation from Portuguese rule which spanned 451 years.

Lionel Messi would have been up against Cristiano Ronaldo as Manchester United were drawn against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the UEFA Champions League 2021-22 Round of 16 draw which was conducted on Monday (December 13). However, in a latest twist, UEFA has declared the draw void after a technical error and has annunced that it will be redone at 7:30 PM IST on Monday (December 13).

Manchester United topped Group E with three wins and two draws from six games while PSG had finished second behind Manchester City in the Group A of the Champions League this season. The Champions League Round of 16 draw was conducted at the UEFA headquarter in Switzerland's Nyon on Monday (December 13). Manchester United's draw against PSG was the biggest talking point as the clash would have witnessed Messi and Ronaldo go up against each other in what could have been a blockbuster affair.

Messi and Ronaldo last faced each other when the Portuguese icon was still at his former club Juventus while Messi was playing at his boyhood club Barcelona in 2020. Ronaldo had scored twice to hand Juventus a 3-0 win in the first leg of the group stage clash at the Camp Nou before missing the returning fixture where Barcelona won 2-0.

They both changed clubs ahead of the ongoing season this year and have been plying their trade in different leagues once again. While Messi left Barcelona to join PSG, Ronaldo made a fairytale come back to join his former club Manchester United. However, the fans now might have to wait to see the arch-rivals face each other once again as the draw will be conducted once again on Monday evening.

"Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16," UEFA said in a tweet.

"As a result of this, the draw has been declared void and will be entirely redone at 1500 CET," it added.

Defending champions Chelsea had managed to get a relatively easier draw in the Round of 16 as they were paired against French side Lille, who have struggled badly so far this season and are currently placed eleventh in the Ligue 1 points table. Manchester City were drawn against La Liga side Villarreal, who won the Europa League last season.

Hit hard by the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, Juventus are seeking to raise 400 million euros in cash by selling new shares to cut debt and repair its finances.

Juventus said Italian prosecutors had ordered a new search of its offices under an investigation into the Serie A club's financial accounting and were also examining the terms of the sale of star player Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United.

Juventus said Italian prosecutors had ordered a new search of its offices under an investigation into the Serie A club's financial accounting and were also examining the terms of the sale of star player Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United. Publishing a supplement to an investor document for a share issue on Thursday, Juventus reiterated that it had always acted in compliance with existing laws and it was fully collaborating with authorities. Turin prosecutors said last week they were investigating the club and some of its senior managers, including Chairman Andrea Agnelli and Vice President Pavel Nedved, in a case centred around player transfers. Italian financial police searched the club's offices last week to seize documents relating to player transfers between 2019 and 2021. The latest search mentioned in the investor document was carried out on Thursday, a person with knowledge of the matter told Reuters. Hit hard by the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, Juventus are seeking to raise 400 million euros in cash by selling new shares to cut debt and repair its finances. In the supplement to the cash call prospectus, Juventus said prosecutors were also looking at its financial statements for the first half of 2021 in relation to Ronaldo's sale.
