IPL 2025: MSD surpasses Suresh Raina to become CSK's highest run-scorer

Skipper Rajat Patidar's fifty combined with support from an unerring set of bowlers helped Royal Challengers Bengaluru snapped a 17-year winless streak at Chepauk with a 50-run win over Chennai Super Kings on Friday (March 28).
CSK's defeat to RCB in the 'Southern Derby' in their own 'Anbuden' (Den of Love) was their first since the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008.
Former CSK opening batter <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shane-watson">Shane Watson</a> shared his insights on Chennai Super Kings&rsquo; (CSK) performance. He expressed disappointment over certain decisions, particularly Rahul Tripathi opening the batting while <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ruturaj-gaikwad">Ruturaj Gaikwad</a> was pushed down the order. "Ruturaj is a quality opener, yet he had to come in later. One of the shots he played&mdash;giving himself room against Hazlewood&mdash;was uncharacteristic. Normally, he stands still and reacts, but this showed he was under pressure," Watson, JioStar expert spoke on Kuhl Fans Match Centre Live.

He also criticised Deepak Hooda&rsquo;s current form, saying, "Right now, he just isn&rsquo;t up to it; he played each ball as if he was trying to survive." Additionally, he questioned Sam Curran&rsquo;s position at No. 5, asserting, "I see him as more of a No. 7 batter." Watson believes CSK&rsquo;s batting lineup needs adjustments to avoid being exposed in crucial moments.
Watson also emphasised the impact of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ms-dhoni">MS Dhoni</a>&rsquo;s performance, advocating for the legendary cricketer to bat higher in the order. "This is exactly what CSK fans come to see&mdash;30 off 16 deliveries from Dhoni. I would have loved to see him come in ahead of Ashwin. Given the game situation, Dhoni could have continued his onslaught for another 15 balls. Over the last couple of years, he has consistently shown that he&rsquo;s still batting beautifully. If CSK had sent him in earlier, they would have had a better chance of crossing the line."
Watson also praised Dhoni&rsquo;s sharp wicketkeeping. "He&rsquo;s still as quick as ever behind the stumps, whipping the bails off in an instant. That tells me he&rsquo;s well-prepared and in great shape."
<h2 data-start="986" data-end="1718">'Just one of those days for Kohli'</h2>
Meanwhile, Aakash Chopra analysed Kohli&rsquo;s innings.He said, "It was one of those days where nothing seemed to click. He kept finding the inner half of the bat, dragging the ball toward the leg side. He took a blow to the head, managed a couple of good shots&mdash;a six and a four&mdash;but ultimately fell playing a lofted sweep to Noor at deep square leg."
However, Chopra highlighted the team&rsquo;s response. "Despite Kohli scoring 31 off 30 balls, RCB still posted 196. That means in the remaining 15 overs, the rest of the team contributed 166 runs. Earlier, RCB often fell 15-20 runs short when Kohli struggled, but now, with better batting depth and intent, the team keeps attacking regardless of his form."

IPL 2025: 'MSD still at his best, but he needs to bat higher', says former CSK opening batter

Following Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) 50-run defeat to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/royal-challengers-bengaluru">Royal Challengers Bengaluru</a> (RCB) at Chepauk in the IPL 2025, skipper <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ruturaj-gaikwad" rel="dofollow">Ruturaj Gaikwad</a> admitted that fielding errors and poor powerplay batting proved costly.
Tight spells from pacers <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/josh-hazlewood">Josh Hazlewood</a> and Yash Dayal helped RCB defend a total of 170, marking their first win at CSK&rsquo;s home ground since 2008. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Gaikwad acknowledged that 170 was a 'par total' on the surface but felt his side&rsquo;s lapses in the field made a crucial difference.

"It was a bad day in the fielding; it cost us really badly," Gaikwad said. "When you are chasing 20 extra runs on a slightly sticky wicket, you have to bat differently in the powerplay."
The CSK skipper also pointed out that crucial dropped catches gave RCB batters extra opportunities. "They just kept going. We dropped catches at crucial times, and then an extra six or boundary would follow. The momentum kept going and did not stop till the final over," he added.
Gaikwad urged his team to bounce back as they head to Guwahati for their next match against Rajasthan Royals. "We are going to have bad days in batting and bowling in a tournament like IPL, but fielding has to improve a lot. We should come back stronger in that department," he signed off.
<h2>As a team, we were outstanding: Hazlewood</h2>
After Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) secured a 50-run win CSK, fast bowler Josh Hazlewood shared his thoughts during the post-match presentation.
Hazlewood expressed satisfaction with both his personal performance and the team's collective effort, emphasising their adaptability to varying conditions. He also credited the team's energy and the inclusion of left-arm pacer Yash Dayal for their success.
"The ball is coming out nicely, and I'm feeling fresh. As a team, we were outstanding. We assessed the conditions well against KKR and did the same tonight. This wicket was a bit tricky&mdash;two-paced and up and down&mdash;so we focused on hitting that in-between length. The energy at RCB is always fantastic, and it has positively impacted our fielding, giving us a real lift," Hazlewood said.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Gaikwad acknowledged that 170 was a 'par total' on the surface but felt his side’s lapses in the field made a crucial difference. Also Read: IPL 2025: 'No timeline for Bumrah’s return', says MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene "It was a bad day in the fielding; it cost us really badly," Gaikwad said. "When you are chasing 20 extra runs on a slightly sticky wicket, you have to bat differently in the powerplay." The CSK skipper also pointed out that crucial dropped catches gave RCB batters extra opportunities. As a team, we were outstanding: Hazlewood After Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) secured a 50-run win CSK, fast bowler Josh Hazlewood shared his thoughts during the post-match presentation. This wicket was a bit tricky—two-paced and up and down—so we focused on hitting that in-between length. The energy at RCB is always fantastic, and it has positively impacted our fielding, giving us a real lift," Hazlewood said. (With inputs from agencies)

There been questions in the recent past about India batter Virat Kohli's form, his future and the calls for retirement have grown considerably as well. The batter, however, needed only two balls in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 game on Friday (Mar 28) to show why is he still relevant - despite retiring from T20Is last year following India's T20 World Cup win during which he was Player of the Match.
Playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kohli was hit on head by a bouncer from Matheesha Pathirana - the physio came out to check on him.

Kohli's partners although, kept the innings going well despite losing wickets at regular interval. Skipper Rajat Patidar played an important innings of 51 off 32 balls - the highest for his team.
Towards the end, Tim David scored unbeaten 22 off just eight balls including three back-to-back sixes in the last over which took RCB to 196/7 in 20 overs.

Few rivalries in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/indian-premier-league">Indian Premier League</a> (IPL) ignite as much passion and excitement as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) versus Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Over the years, this fixture has evolved into a marquee showdown, drawing fans from across the country. Former RCB head coach&nbsp; <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/sanjay-bangar">Sanjay Bangar</a> shared his insights on what makes this rivalry so special and what RCB must do to overcome CSK&rsquo;s dominance, particularly in Chennai.<o:p></o:p>
Reflecting on the head-to-head record, Bangar acknowledged CSK&rsquo;s historical upper hand, having won 21 out of 33 encounters. However, he noted that the gap between the two teams has started to close. "If you look at the last couple of seasons, we&rsquo;ve seen high-scoring, closely fought contests," Sanjay Bangar, JioStar expert, replied to WION's question ahead of the IPL's 'El Clasico' match on Friday (March 28). He remembered a memorable game where RCB came agonisingly close to chasing down 220+ runs, only to fall short when Dinesh Karthik was dismissed.<o:p></o:p>

Despite Chennai&rsquo;s home advantage, Bangar believes RCB&rsquo;s batting firepower could give them an edge. "RCB has a stronger batting line-up, but if the pitch starts gripping and turning, that&rsquo;s where CSK&rsquo;s spinners&mdash;Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandra Ashwin, and Noor Ahmed&mdash;could create trouble, especially for RCB&rsquo;s English batters," he explained.<o:p></o:p>

Beyond the on-field battle, Bangar highlighted the emotional and fan-driven aspects of the rivalry. "CSK is one of the most followed teams across the country, while RCB, with Virat Kohli at the helm, enjoys an equally passionate fan base," he said. The presence of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ms-dhoni">MS Dhoni</a> and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/virat-kohli">Virat Kohli</a> &mdash; two of the biggest icons in Indian cricket&mdash;elevates the stakes every time these teams clash.<o:p></o:p>

As RCB looks to break their losing streak in Chennai, all eyes will be on their ability to counter CSK&rsquo;s home advantage. Former Indian cricket and Chennai Super Kings captain&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mahendra-singh-dhoni">Mahendra Singh Dhoni</a> has shared his views on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/impact-player">Impact Player</a> rule introduced in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/indian-premier-league">Indian Premier League</a> (IPL). Initially skeptical about its necessity, Dhoni said, "When this rule was implemented, I felt it wasn't really needed at that time." He elaborated that while the rule offers certain advantages, it doesn't significantly alter his role, stating, "I still do my wicket-keeping, so I am not an impact player. I have to be involved in the game."
The Impact Player rule allows teams to introduce a substitute player during a match, aiming to add strategic depth. This has led to discussions about its influence on game dynamics, particularly concerning the increasing scores in T20 cricket. Addressing this, Dhoni observed that the surge in high-scoring games is more attributable to players' evolving mindsets and favorable conditions rather than solely the addition of an extra batsman. He shared, "The number of runs being scored isn't just because of an extra batsman. It's about the mindset&mdash;teams now have the comfort of an extra batter, so they play more aggressively."

<h2 data-start="160" data-end="349">'It is how T20 has evolved'</h2>
This perspective highlights a shift in T20 cricket, where the assurance of additional resources empowers teams to adopt a more assertive approach. Dhoni emphasised that this evolution is driven by the confidence that comes with having extra options, stating, "It's not that all four or five extra batters are being used&mdash;it's just the confidence of having them. This is how T20 cricket has evolved."
While some critics argue that the Impact Player rule might hinder the development of all-rounders by favoring specialised big-hitters, Dhoni's insights suggest that the rule's primary effect is on strategic flexibility and player confidence. His reflections provide a nuanced understanding of how regulatory changes can influence the game's progression, not merely through structural adjustments but by reshaping the psychological landscape in which players operate.

IPL 2025: 'I felt it wasn't really needed at that time', Dhoni has his say on Impact Player rule

Former <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/chennai-super-kings">Chennai Super Kings</a> (CSK) captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/msd">MS Dhoni</a> has acknowledged the rapidly changing nature of T20 cricket, emphasising the importance of continuous adaptation to remain competitive. The wicketkeeper-batsman, known for his calm demeanor and strategic mindset, reflected on how the format has evolved over the years, requiring players to constantly refine their skills and approach.
Speaking about the impact of changing trends, Dhoni pointed out that modern T20 cricket demands not just power-hitting but also tactical awareness, fitness, and innovation. He noted that young players are bringing fresh energy and unconventional techniques to the game, making it essential for experienced cricketers to keep evolving.

Expressing his views on regional language commentary for IPL, MS Dhoni said, "I haven't listened to regional language commentary much because when we watch live matches, replays are limited, and most of the commentary I hear is in English or Hindi. That helps us analyse the game better."
"I haven't heard a lot of regional commentary, but I know that Bihari (Bhojpuri) commentary is highly energetic. It reminds me of old-school radio commentary, where the commentators were very involved. I find that very interesting. Many people prefer to listen in their regional language&mdash;it&rsquo;s their mother tongue, and they want to experience the game in that way. I would love to hear Haryanvi commentary because it&rsquo;s quite unique," he added.

IPL 2025 | 'I have to adapt and stay relevant', says Dhoni

Cricket has long been a sport where talent meets opportunity, and Vignesh Puthur is the latest embodiment of that. The 24-year-old left-arm wrist spinner from Malappuram, Kerala, made an immediate impact in his debut for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mumbai-indians">Mumbai Indians</a> in Indian Premier League 2025, leaving fans and cricketing experts in awe. With a spell of 3/32 against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/chennai-super-kings">Chennai Super Kings</a>, he not only justified the faith MI put in him but also demonstrated that raw talent, when nurtured correctly, can create magic on the biggest stage.
<h2>Humble beginnings</h2>
Vignesh Puthur's journey is nothing short of inspiring. Coming from a modest background, his father, Sunil Kumar, is an autorickshaw driver, and his mother, K.P. Bindu, is a homemaker. Growing up in Malappuram, cricket was more of a dream than a reality for Puthur. Financial constraints often posed challenges, but his passion and determination never wavered.
Despite the hardships, he moved from Malappuram to Thrissur in pursuit of his cricketing dreams. Initially a medium pacer until his college years, Puthur made a pivotal shift to spin bowling, and it turned out to be a game-changing decision. His ability to give the ball flight and deceive batters with his variations soon caught the attention of the cricketing fraternity.
While studying for a Master of Arts in Literature at St. Thomas College in Thrissur, Puthur honed his skills further, making a name for himself in Kerala&rsquo;s domestic circuits. His performances for the Alleppey Ripples in the inaugural Kerala Cricket League turned heads, and his stint in the Tamil Nadu Premier League further solidified his reputation as a promising spinner.
Mumbai Indians, known for their exceptional talent scouting system, took notice of Puthur during the Kerala Premier League. Recognising his potential, MI acquired him in the IPL 2025 auction for $35,000&mdash;a moment that changed his life forever. To ensure his growth as a bowler, the franchise even sent him to South Africa for the SA20 league, where he served as a net bowler for MI Cape Town. There, he trained alongside <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/rashid-khan">Rashid Khan</a>, one of the finest wrist-spinners in the world, further refining his skills.
<h2>IPL debut: A dream come true</h2>
Vignesh Puthur made his IPL debut as an impact substitute, replacing none other than India&rsquo;s cricketing icon, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/rohit-sharma">Rohit Sharma</a>. Stepping onto the field for the first time in front of millions of fans, Puthur showed no signs of nerves. He delivered a spell that left even the most seasoned CSK batters struggling. His three crucial wickets included the prized scalps of CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, and Deepak Hooda.
For now, the spotlight is on Vignesh Puthur&mdash;the boy from Kerala who spun his way into IPL history.

MS Dhoni's lightning-fast stumping left Noor Ahmad in awe during Chennai Super Kings' high-octane Indian Premier League 2025 clash against Mumbai Indians. The electrifying moment at Chepauk sent the crowd into a frenzy as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mahendra-singh-dhoni">Mahendra Singh Dhoni</a>'s brilliance behind the stumps turned the tide in CSK's favour.
The magic unfolded in the 11th over of MI's innings when stand-in skipper <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/suryakumar-yadav">Suryakumar Yadav</a> stepped out to play an inside-out drive but misjudged Noor's delivery. Before he could react, Dhoni had already whipped off the bails with incredible speed, sending Surya back for 29 from 26 balls.
"The focus was on landing the ball in the right area, and Surya's wicket was special. MSD's stumping was out of this world. Having Mahi bhai behind the stumps is a huge support for me," Noor said at the post-match presentation.

Justifying his $116 million price tag, Noor spun a web around MI's batters, returning with stunning figures of 4/18 and earning the Player of the Match award. His spell choked MI&rsquo;s scoring, dismissing key batters one after another. Robin Minz found himself caught at long off, Tilak Varma fell victim to a deceptive googly, and Naman Dhir misjudged a sweep, losing his stumps.
Noor's heroics restricted MI to 155/9, a target CSK chased down comfortably. Rachin Ravindra (65 not out) and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (53) led the charge, sealing a commanding four-wicket victory for the five-time champions.
"It feels special to play in the IPL. I'm happy for the team and my contribution," Noor reflected after his match-winning performance.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ruturaj-gaikwad" rel="dofollow">Ruturaj Gaikwad</a> praised spinner Noor Ahmad as the team's 'X factor' after their hard-fought four-wicket win over Mumbai Indians. However, he admitted they could have been more clinical with the bat.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Gaikwad expressed his satisfaction with the win while acknowledging areas for improvement. "Happy to be on the winning side. We would have liked to be more clinical, but that&rsquo;s how the game goes. Batting at No. 3 is a team requirement, and I am happy to adjust for the team&rsquo;s balance," he said.
Gaikwad also highlighted the impact of CSK's spin attack. "Right after the auction, we were excited about having all three spinners bowling in tandem at Chepauk. Khaleel Ahmed brings experience, Noor is an X factor, and having Ravichandran Ashwin is a huge plus for us."
He also provided an update on MS Dhoni, saying, "He is fitter than ever this year and still looks young."

Cricket, Sports: The magic unfolded in the 11th over of MI's innings when Suryakumar Yadav stepped out to play an inside-out drive but misjudged Noor's delivery

MS Dhoni's lightning-fast stumping left Noor Ahmad in awe during Chennai Super Kings' high-octane Indian Premier League 2025 clash against Mumbai Indians. The electrifying moment at Chepauk sent the crowd into a frenzy as Mahendra Singh Dhoni's brilliance behind the stumps turned the tide in CSK's favour. The magic unfolded in the 11th over of MI's innings when stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav stepped out to play an inside-out drive but misjudged Noor's delivery. IPL 2025: Noor Ahmad in awe of MS Dhoni's 'out of world' stumping of Suryakumar Yadav

Mumbai Indians' stand-in captain, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/suryakumar-yadav">Suryakumar Yadav</a>, admitted that his team fell 15-20 runs short despite putting up a commendable fight against Chennai Super Kings in their high-stakes IPL 2025 match on Sunday (March 23).
In another thrilling match of Indian Premier League&rsquo;s &lsquo;El Clasico,&rsquo; MI faced a sea of yellow at Chepauk after being put in to bat by CSK. Their innings got off to a rocky start as veteran opener <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/rohit-sharma">Rohit Sharma</a> departed for a four-ball duck. Left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmad dismantled MI&rsquo;s middle order, hampering their chances of posting a formidable total.

A crucial 51-run stand between Suryakumar and Tilak Varma helped MI scrape to 155/9. However, the total appeared below par on a challenging surface. Reflecting on the innings, Suryakumar said, "Absolutely. We were 15-20 runs short, but the fight the boys showed was commendable."
Despite the underwhelming total, MI unearthed an unexpected hero in debutant Vignesh Puthur. The young pacer, who had never played a domestic match before, made an instant impact. He dismissed CSK skipper <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ruturaj-gaikwad" rel="dofollow">Ruturaj Gaikwad</a> with his maiden IPL wicket and later sent back Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda, keeping MI in the hunt.
<h2>SKY all praise for Vignesh</h2>
However, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/rachin-ravindra">Rachin Ravindra</a> anchored CSK&rsquo;s chase and finished the game in style with a towering six, sealing a four-wicket win for the hosts. Suryakumar credited MI&rsquo;s scouting system for unearthing talents like Vignesh, saying, "Amazing, MI is known for that&mdash;giving youngsters opportunities. The scouts work for 10 months, and he is a product of that. I kept his one over in the pocket if the game went deep, but it was a no-brainer to give him the 18th over."
While Rachin steered CSK home, Suryakumar believed it was Gaikwad&rsquo;s blistering 53 that ultimately decided the match. "There wasn't any dew, but it was sticky. The way Ruturaj batted in the second innings took the game away from us," he signed off.

IPL 2025 | 'CSK vs MI is like India-Pakistan of IPL', says former India spinner Harbhajan Singh

MS Dhoni, the heart and soul of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/chennai-super-kings">Chennai Super Kings</a>, remains the only active cricketing legend that IPL fans eagerly await each season. As the 2025 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/indian-premier-league">Indian Premier League</a> approaches, the 43-year-old stalwart has once again defied age with his exceptional fitness and rigorous training.
Recently, former cricketer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/harbhajan-singh">Harbhajan Singh</a> met Dhoni at a wedding and was left in awe of his physical condition. Intrigued by the CSK captain&rsquo;s dedication, Harbhajan asked how he manages to keep up with the demands of professional cricket at his age. Dhoni&rsquo;s response was as classic as his finishing shots: &ldquo;Yes, it&rsquo;s tough, but I love doing it. As long as the hunger is there, I will keep going.&rdquo;

According to Harbhajan, Dhoni has been grinding hard in Chennai ahead of the IPL, spending 2-3 hours in the nets daily, ensuring his batting flow and timing remain sharp. Even at 43, he remains the first to arrive at practice and the last to leave.
<h2>'MSD's hands remains as quick as ever'</h2>
Former cricketer Aakash Chopra shed light on why Dhoni prefers batting lower in the order. While many fans urge him to bat higher, Dhoni is honest about his abilities&mdash;he knows he can&rsquo;t sustain long innings but thrives in pressure situations where his finishing prowess comes into play.
Chopra also praised Dhoni&rsquo;s legendary wicket-keeping skills, claiming &ldquo;If the ball goes to him, you&rsquo;re out 9.5 times out of 10.&rdquo; Even after years away from international cricket, Dhoni&rsquo;s hands remain as quick as ever.
As the IPL 2025 season nears, Dhoni&rsquo;s dedication and hunger prove that age is just a number when passion drives excellence. Will 'Thala' lead CSK to yet another title? The countdown begins!

IPL 2025 | MS Dhoni at 43: Still fit, still fearless, still CSK’s king!

At 36, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mohit-sharma">Mohit Sharma</a> is not just another fast bowler trying to extend his career&mdash;he is a seasoned warrior, a quiet enforcer, and a man who has seen every high and low the game has to offer. When he came for the pre-season interactions with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/delhi-capitals">Delhi Capitals</a>, he carried with him the same warm smile that has been his signature for years. He greeted everyone with respect, exchanged laughs, and exuded an easy-going charm that made even the most intense cricket discussions feel like casual banter. But behind that ever-present smile lies an unrelenting spirit, one that refuses to fade away.
Mohit&rsquo;s journey in cricket has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. From being a key player in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/chennai-super-kings">Chennai Super Kings</a>&rsquo; dominant era to an IPL Purple Cap winner, then battling injuries and setbacks, and finally making a roaring comeback with Gujarat Titans&mdash;he has lived through every possible phase of a cricketer&rsquo;s life. Now, as he dons the Delhi Capitals jersey, the hunger remains the same, but the wisdom he brings to the team is even greater.
His approach to preparation is methodical yet adaptive. &ldquo;I am preparing myself overall, to be honest. I am taking care of my body, bowling with both the new ball and the old ball, and making sure I am ready for any situation,&rdquo; he shared. For a format as volatile as T20, adaptability is everything, and Mohit has mastered the art of reinventing himself time and again.

One of the key aspects of his game has been his ability to handle setbacks with grace. He has never been one to dwell on losses or bask too long in victories. Even when asked about one of the most heartbreaking moments of his career&mdash;the 2023 IPL final, where a couple of crucial deliveries changed the game&mdash;his response was one of acceptance and perspective. &ldquo;I believe in destiny. If something good happens, I move forward. If something bad happens, I go back to the nets,&rdquo; he said, shrugging off any lingering regrets.
Delhi Capitals will look to tap into this experience, especially with a bowling attack that features both young firepower and experienced campaigners. The presence of a veteran like Mohit Sharma in the dressing room will undoubtedly be invaluable, not just for his skill but for the calmness and clarity he brings. &ldquo;In T20s, you will get hit. If you are afraid of getting hit for sixes, you won&rsquo;t take wickets,&rdquo; he says with a smile, emphasising the importance of courage in high-pressure situations.
<h2>'Starc will bring great value to team'</h2>
A crucial addition to this IPL season will be <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mitchell-starc">Mitchell Starc</a>, a bowler Mohit Sharma deeply respects. When asked about the Australian speedster&rsquo;s impact, Mohit was candid in his admiration. &ldquo;Experience matters a lot in T20s, not just in terms of performance but in learning. Having someone like Starc in the mix brings great value to the team. We have all taken hits in this format, but it&rsquo;s about bouncing back. Starc's ability to deliver in crunch moments will be crucial for us.&rdquo;
Mohit also acknowledges the role of great mentors in his career, particularly his time under <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/msd">MS Dhoni</a> and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ashish-nehra">Ashish Nehra</a>. Now, as he steps into a new environment, he brings with him the lessons of leadership, patience, and resilience. Having been a part of IPL for over a decade, he understands that reputations mean little&mdash;execution on the field is everything.
As Delhi Capitals prepare for the upcoming IPL season, Mohit Sharma remains a fascinating subplot in their campaign. Will he once again prove his mettle and script another chapter in his storied career? If his past is any indication, the answer lies in the same smile that never leaves his face&mdash;one that says he&rsquo;s ready for whatever comes next.

Besides Dhoni, CSK also have several new faces, a handful of match winners and core members, including Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja and the Kiwi pair of Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra.
The return of Ravichandran Ashwin to CSK after ten years will boost the side&rsquo;s bowling and overall experience otherwise, with the newcomers, including Khaleel Ahmed, Anshul Kamboj and Noor Ahmed, adding firepower to the attack.&nbsp;
In the batting department, the addition of several Indian talents in Rahul Tripathi and Deepak Hooda, with the return of all-rounder Sam Curran and the inclusion of his countryman Jamie Overton, add value to the already-strengthened batting line-up.
Meanwhile, with the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/ipl-2025-full-schedule-eden-gardens-to-host-season-opener-final-csk-mi-face-off-on-march-23-8726632" rel="dofollow">IPL announcing the schedule for the 18th edition</a>, it&rsquo;s time we look at when and where CSK will play its scheduled 14 matches this season. R Ashwin retired from international cricket on Wednesday (Dec 18) following the Gabba Test between India and Australia, of the ongoing 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), in Brisbane. After his retirement, he announced that he would be leaving for India and the wily spinner reached his hometown Chennai on Thursday (Dec 19). Meeting&nbsp;reporters in his hometown post his arrival, Ashwin made it clear that he has 'no regrets' and aspires to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for long.

Talking to the media, Ashwin quashed rumours of having regrets of not captaining India during his 14-year-long career. He said, "I can't any more. It's done. No, I have zero regrets. I have seen so many people with regrets from afar, but I don't want to live my life like that."

On his plans post retirement, the 38-year-old Ashwin stated, "I want to be idle-no immediate plans. Being idle is difficult for me.

He added,&nbsp;"I am going to play for CSK, and don't be surprised if I try and aspire to play for as long as I can. I don't think Ashwin the cricketer is done. I think Ashwin the Indian cricketer has probably called it time. That's it."

"Thanks to all of you. I didn't expect so many of you to come. I thought I would quietly reach home, but you've all made my day. The last time it was like this was when I returned home after the 2011 World Cup. It brought back those memories," Ashwin concluded.

Ashwin ended his international career having represented India in 106 Tests, 116 ODIs and 65 T20Is. He accounted for 537 Test scalps (second-most by an Indian) and 228 wickets in white-ball formats. He even returned with 3,503 Test runs, including six centuries.&nbsp;The off-spinner was part of India's victorious runs in the 2011 ODI World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy.

Lalit Modi, founder of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has slammed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) owner N Srinivasan and made some serious allegations. Modi and Srinivasan have been at the loggerheads for long. Modi levelled serious charges, saying the Chennai owner used to rig IPL auctions and bring in local umpires for CSK's home games.&nbsp;

Speaking on a YouTube podcast, Modi said, "He (N Srinivasan) didn’t like IPL, he didn’t think IPL will work, but when it started to work, everybody got on the bandwagon. CSK owner N Srinivasan rigged IPL 2009 auction? Lalit Modi makes BIG claims

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) purchased ace India spinner and ex-franchise player Ravichandran Ashwin for $1.1mn (INR 9.75 crore) on day one of the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming, who was present at the auction table, reflected on Ashwin’s ‘homecoming’, who played for the side for six seasons (2009-2015) before.

To acquire Ashwin’s service, CSK fought hard with Rajasthan Royals (RR), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in a four-way bidding war.&nbsp;

Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT) also chased Noor, but with CSK putting up a 10-crore counteroffer after GT decided to use RTM for him, they backed off, with Chennai winning the race for the T20 specialist.

"It's a bit of a homecoming for Ashwin, but he's a world-class bowler," Fleming said after day one at the IPL 2025 mega auction.&nbsp;

"It's not so much the price - you look at how someone fits in, and there's an emotional attachment for Ashwin with Chennai, so it's a nice fit. He has still got a very good skillset; his numbers are fantastic. He's obviously towards the latter part of his career, but the experience he brings, he's handy with the bat, and we think we can use him in a number of ways.

"The Noor Ahmad pick was looking more at the middle [overs] to attack. So, if we do get turning conditions, then we've got an opportunity to keep taking wickets. We've got [Matheesha] Pathirana at the end, which is the death aspect,” the coach noted.

<h2>Spin to win for CSK</h2>

Emphasizing the importance of picking wickets and how it impacts the game’s result, especially in the shortest format, Fleming said he is content with the players they picked on day one.

"We've just identified that the way the game is going, your bowling has to be really specific, and you have to take wickets to slow teams down. And if you're just trying to contain, then some of the hitting power of players these days will just take the game away from you.&nbsp;

“So, we've tried to be smart with our options given our retained players and add some variation, which maybe we lacked a little bit last year,” the coach continued.

Meanwhile, besides Ashwin, CSK bought several familiar faces in Devon Conway (INR 6.5 crore) and Rachin Ravindra (INR 4 crore), who played for the franchise in the previous edition. The five-time IPL winners also picked up top order batter Rahul Tripathi for INR 3.40 crore.&nbsp;

<h2>CSK win the bid for Ashwin</h2>

In a tightly contested bidding war between Rajasthan Royals and CSK, it was the South Indian side who won the bid for Ashwin. While both tables did not give up, CSK were determined to get the deal done and paid a whopping price of $1.15 million. Interestingly, the leg spinner was a crowd favourite with both CSK and RR and will bring tonnes of experience to the former.

The veteran spinner has 180 wickets in 212 matches and is a handy batter down the order, giving good utility options to CSK. During his first stint with CSK, he scalped 90 wickets in 98 matches and won the IPL on two occasions in 2010 and 2011. He also won the now-defunct Champions League on two occasions with CSK.

Despite rumours of a reported bid for Rishabh Pant, he was not considered by the franchise and was acquired by the Luknow Super Giants for a whopping $3.2 million, making him the most expensive player in the history of the tournament. Despite the Right to Match (RTM) card by the Delhi Capitals, it was LSG who won the battle for the Indian wicketkeeper-batter.

IPL 2025 mega auction: Ravichandran Ashwin returns to Chennai Super Kings in $1.15mn deal

Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) superstar Suresh Raina has explained the franchise’s decision to retain their veteran MS Dhoni ahead of IPL 2025 while sharing thoughts on Ruturaj Gaikwad as team captain. Dhoni relinquished CSK’s captaincy before last season, handing the baton to the opener and seasoned campaigner Gaikwad. The joint-most successful IPL side retained both alongside Shivam Dube, Matheesha Pathirana and Ravindra Jadeja, spending INR 65 crores.

Meanwhile, the IPL brought back an old rule, scrapped in 2021, which states that an Indian player who last played an international game five years before the retention date will be eligible to play IPL 2025 but as an uncapped player. With Dhoni’s last match for India dated back in July 2019, he fits the criteria, and thus, CSK retained him for INR 4 crore.

However, there is more to this.&nbsp;

"CSK needs him," Raina said of Dhoni playing IPL 2025 during a conversation with Times of India (TOI). "Ruturaj is still a new captain; just one edition has gone by (with him as the skipper). So, I personally also believe he (Dhoni) should play."

Speaking of Dhoni and his chances of prolonging his IPL career, Raina noted that he is fit enough to play two more years, and given his awareness about his body, Dhoni intentionally played so low the past season.

"He has the fitness, has been retained, so he wants to enjoy it for a couple of years. He bats only during the last 3-4 overs and is wicket-keeping well,” Raina continued.

Meanwhile, in the 2024 season, Dhoni played all 14 matches, batting in eight outings and scoring 161 runs at a whopping strike rate of 220.55. Overall, he has played 264 games, whacking 5243 runs, with his highest being 84*.&nbsp;

Besides, given their history and how they approach players at the auction, CSK is likely to chase their former players, preparing to keep the core for the upcoming season, starting March 14, 2025.

IPL 2025: Raina explains CSK’s decision to retain MS Dhoni; shares thoughts on Gaikwad as franchise captain

Veteran England seamer James Anderson registered his name for the first time in the IPL auction, with his base price being INR 1.25 crore. Having announced retirement from cricket following a decorated two-decade-plus career, Anderson harbours hopes of playing franchise cricket, saying he still has some cricket left in him. Anderson’s former captain, Michael Vaughan, has predicted which team the Test great could be playing for next season.

With the IPL 2025 mega auction just around the corner, scheduled for November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, all eyes would be on Anderson, 42, among the oldest players to register their name in the auction.

Although all 10 teams would either try retaining their core and go for top Indian capped players, with Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer likely to make headlines for their respective bids, Vaughan said he will not be surprised to see Anderson playing at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025.

While CSK has the reputation of chasing experienced players regardless of the age factor, going after Anderson, who remains lethal with the new ball across conditions, might work in CSK’s favour.&nbsp;

However, the chances of Anderson remaining unsold at the mega auction could also be possible, given the age factor.

IPL 2025: James Anderson could end up playing for CSK, predicts Michael Vaughan

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan has addressed rumours about the franchise chasing India gloveman Rishabh Pant at the upcoming IPL mega auction 2025. With CSK veteran MS Dhoni in the twilight stage of his IPL career, indicating wanting to enjoy his last few years in this cash-rich league, the Chennai-based outfit would be keen to bring in his like-to-like replacement, and what’s better than doing it at the mega auction scheduled in Jeddah on November 24 and 25.

For the first time since rumours of CSK wanting to bag Pant’s services at the auction began doing rounds, Kasi, while speaking with former CSK batter and trophy-winner Ambati Rayudu, broke his silence, insisting that discussions around the same took place with the captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Dhoni, CSK would aim to chase their core players instead of going after big names.

It has been CSK’s strategy to retain their core players since the outset, a testament to their success in this league. With CSK retaining only five players, including Gaikwad, Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana, and considering their remaining purse of INR 55 crore out of INR 120-crore purse, chasing big Indian names, including Pant, KL Rahul or even Shreyas Iyer, could be out of their reach.&nbsp;

Kasi also admitted they discussed these scenarios before releasing the final retention list.

"We had discussions with Ruturaj, the captain, MS (Dhoni) and Coach Stephen Fleming before we decided on the retentions. We were very clear that the players that helped the team grow, stabilise in the previous years were the ones very important for the CSK team to continue further," Kasi said, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

"It was very easy to decide on the retentions -- Gaikwad, Jaddu, MS, Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana. But we knew that if we retain these players, we would have a lesser purse to go into the auction. We knew that we wouldn't be able to compete with the other teams when it comes to the best of the Indian players. I mean, we will still try, but I don't think we'll be able to get them at the auction," he continued.&nbsp;

<h2>CSK targets ex-players</h2>

With several players in the pipeline for CSK to go after from their previous squad, the Kiwi pair of Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra, Sri Lanka spinner Mahesh Theekshana and Indian seamer Deepak Chahar are among the favourites.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan has addressed rumours about the franchise chasing India gloveman Rishabh Pant at the upcoming IPL mega auction 2025.

ALSO READ: Ex-England pacer James Anderson reveals reason behind signing up for IPL auction It has been CSK’s strategy to retain their core players since the outset, a testament to their success in this league. With CSK retaining only five players, including Gaikwad, Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana, and considering their remaining purse of INR 55 crore out of INR 120-crore purse, chasing big Indian names, including Pant, KL Rahul or even Shreyas Iyer, could be out of their reach. "It was very easy to decide on the retentions -- Gaikwad, Jaddu, MS, Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana. But we knew that if we retain these players, we would have a lesser purse to go into the auction. We knew that we wouldn't be able to compete with the other teams when it comes to the best of the Indian players. I mean, we will still try, but I don't think we'll be able to get them at the auction," he continued. CSK targets ex-players With several players in the pipeline for CSK to go after from their previous squad, the Kiwi pair of Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra, Sri Lanka spinner Mahesh Theekshana and Indian seamer Deepak Chahar are among the favourites. The five-time IPL winner could also get after local players picked during earlier auctions this time. (With inputs from agencies)

IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Kasi Viswanathan addresses CSK chasing Rishabh Pant rumours, says ‘discussions were…’

Tom Latham-led New Zealand stunned India by inflicting a 3-0 whitewash in the recently-held three Tests in India. Rachin Ravindra, who scored a majestic hundred in the first Test in Bengaluru, played a key role in his side's dominance. Former Indian opener Robin Uthappa has recently shown his displeasure over his ex-IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) allowing Ravindra, who joined the Yellow Army in the 2024 edition, to practice in Chennai&nbsp;ahead of the India series.

Ravindra trained in CSK's academy in Chennai&nbsp;ahead of NZ's one-off Test against Afghanistan in Greater Noida, which got washed out in September, and trained there to get used to the Indian conditions. As a result, he scored a brilliant ton in the series opener and ended the series as the second-highest run-getter -- most from his side -- with 256 runs (including a fifty and a hundred).

<h2>'CSK is a beautiful franchise but&nbsp;line has to be drawn where country's interest&nbsp;comes ahead'</h2>

Thus, Uthappa said on his YouTube channel, "Rachin Ravindra came here and practiced at the CSK Academy. CSK is a beautiful franchise that will always look after its franchise players but a line has to be drawn where the interest of the country comes ahead of your franchise players, especially when he is a foreign player and comes and plays against our country."

Uthappa, who represented CSK from 2021-22,&nbsp;further opined, "I am not surprised that CSK always go over and above for their players but somewhere in that kindness, maybe I am not saying the right thing, I absolutely love CSK, but when it comes to the country, there should be a line somewhere where we do not cross that line."

"On the basis of that preparation, Rachin Ravindra batted brilliantly (in the series opener in Bengaluru). One of the best knocks by an overseas player. On that wicket, 134 off 157 balls, it was solid batting. He then showed that he is the future of New Zealand cricket," he concluded.

NZ beat India by eight wickets in Bengaluru and followed it up with a 113 and 25-run win in Pune and Mumbai, respectively, to become the first Test team to beat India 3-0 in India.

Talking about CSK, they have not retained Ravindra ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Curtains were finally lifted on the Indian Premier League (IPL) retentions as all 10 franchises made their first move for the next season. One of the big names in the conversation was Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend who will don the IPL hat in its 18th season in 2025. While the retention is a big bonus for fans, the franchise could pay a big prize for a player who turned 43 in July. So will the CSK move to retain a player of Dhoni’s caliber pay off?

<h2>Background</h2>

At 43, it is unlikely that Dhoni will play for CSK for the next three years and could have paved the way for another uncapped retention had he decided to retire. However, his retention under the uncapped player rule means the franchise will lose only ₹40 million ($480,000) from their spending purse. After IPL 2024, Tushar Deshpande and young Rajvardhan Hangargekar could have been at the top of the list for CSK had the uncapped rule not changed.

But the new rule meant that MS Dhoni who had not played international cricket for five years was eligible as an uncapped player while Tushar’s two international caps during the Zimbabwe tour made him eligible. This left CSK franchise to decide on either Hangargekar or Dhoni to get retained. Part of the Indian U-19 World Cup winning squad in 2022, Hangargekar was paid a whopping ₹15 million ($180,000) at the auctions. However, since his move, he has been a squad player and not of more commercial value.

<h2>Why does MS Dhoni's retention at CSK make sense?</h2>

With Hangargekar also out of sight, CSK’s only option technically was MS Dhoni and they bought him for cheap. While he won’t be a great contributor on the field, his presence in the team is of great commercial value to the side and the Indian Premier League. Even at 43, Dhoni’s commercial value attracts a huge fan base and TRP for television.

In IPL 2024, fans were seen splashing a big sum on travel, tickets and merchandise to get a glimpse of Dhoni. On the other hand, Jio, a digital streaming partner of IPL had a special ‘star-cam’ for Dhoni during his IPL matches which solely focused on him. This contributed to the TRP and digital ratings of the channel.

While figures can’t be confirmed, Dhoni’s presence generates a big sum (likely to be 20 times his current value) for both CSK and IPL and other sponsors, making his move a commercial success rather than an on-field success. &nbsp;

IPL 2025: CSK land MS Dhoni as 'uncapped' player, but does the move make any sense?

Ace Indian keeper-batter Rishabh Pant is on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) radar ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. The latest reports suggest that Delhi Capitals have decided against retaining their captain and marquee player, and with Pant entering the mega auction, CSK are among several teams eyeing&nbsp;his services.

The five-time IPL champions, Chennai Super Kings, are said to retain their skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, seamer Matheesha Pathirana and former captain and star player MS Dhoni (under the uncapped player category). Though CSK is undecided over retaining all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube is another name they will take a final call on with the deadline fast approaching.

However, with MS Dhoni hinting at enjoying his last few years in the IPL, the franchise is looking forward to the future; who better than to replace Dhoni with India Test great Pant at CSK?&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Chennai Super Kings understand the money and auction dynamics regarding Pant, with reports adding that they are keeping a surplus of INR 20 crore for him from their auction purse.&nbsp;

With Pant bringing along the captaincy perk, several teams will approach him during the mega auction, scheduled for late next month. To cut down on competition, CSK might put Jadeja’s name in the auction to make more room for Pant should the management decide to bring him on board from next season onwards.

Even if CSK retains four or five players, they’d have RTM options to be used for Jadeja or any other player.

<h2>If not Pant, then who else?</h2>

CSK will look at all options - although given how much they value their players, considering retaining their core group over the years, CSK will do everything possible to have Jadeja on board.&nbsp;

With Pant, CSK has to strategise well and plan accordingly, keeping an option open for someone else if the bid for Pant goes beyond their purse for him.&nbsp;

Another name the CSK could chase is India keeper-batter KL Rahul, who also said to part ways with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the auction.&nbsp;

IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Rishabh Pant on CSK’s radar after DC exit – Reports

Talismanic India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) great Mahendra Singh Dhoni has dropped a massive hint on his Indian Premier League (IPL) future with the mega auction looming. Days before the deadline (Oct 31) end for all ten teams to submit their retention list, Dhoni addressed questions surrounding his future in the cash-rich league.

Having relinquished his IPL captaincy on the eve of the last season, Dhoni played as a batter, though with a troubling knee. In 14 contested matches in IPL 2024, Dhoni scored 161 runs at a whopping strike rate of over 220, hitting 13 sixes and 14 fours during brief stays at the crease.&nbsp;

Dhoni, 43, remains an integral part of the CSK group, taking all decisions, from deciding the playing XIs to preparing the strategies to take a call on whom to retain. With the IPL 2025 mega auction just around the corner, to be staged in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in the final week of November, Dhoni is yet to take a call on his future.

Per the franchise’s CEO, Kasi Viswanathan, Dhoni will wait until the last moment before announcing his decision.&nbsp;

"We have still no confirmation from him, though we will like him to continue playing for us," Viswanathan said in a chat with ESPNcricinfo. "Hope he will confirm before 31st [October]."

<h2>IPL rule change makes it easier for Dhoni</h2>

Meanwhile, thanks to the addition of an IPL rule that got scrapped in 2021, which reads that any Indian player who last played an international game at least five years before the retention date is eligible to play under the uncapped player category. MS Dhoni, whose final match for India came during the 2019 World Cup, qualifies to play as an uncapped player this year.

Although the BCCI has provided a minimum retention cap for five players (order-wise), every team can retain an uncapped player for INR 4 crore.

“I just want to enjoy whatever last few years of cricket I can play,” MS Dhoni said in a promotional event for a software brand, as quoted by Times of India.

“When you play cricket like a professional sport, it becomes difficult to enjoy it just like a game. That’s what I want to do. It’s not easy. The emotions keep coming, the commitments are there. I want to enjoy the game for the next few years,” he continued.&nbsp;

Chennai Super Kings haven’t announced their retention list yet, with SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) being the only franchise to indicate who would be retained ahead of next season.&nbsp;
