Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has not enjoyed the best of spells at the club ever since completing his £80million move to the club from Leicester City in 2019. Despite having some great outings for the club, Maguire has struggled for consistency and has failed to live up to the expectations at United.

The ongoing 2022-23 season has been no different as Maguire has been on the receiving end of intense criticism from United fans after the club suffered back-to-back defeats in their first two games in the Premier League under new manager Erik Ten Hag.

United lost their opener against Brighton 2-1 before Brentford thrashed them 4-0 in their second league game to pile pressure on Ten Hag and increase United's miseries after a disappointing campaign last season. However, despite his average performances, Maguire is reportedly being eyed by United's Premier League rivals Chelsea as a potential signing.

As per a report in the Daily Mail, Chelsea have made a hock enquiry about Maguire's situation at Manchester United amid doubts over the England defender's future. Maguire has failed to impress the fans, who believe he doesn't deserve the captain's armband and should be sold by the club despite being their most expensive defensive signing.

As per the report, Chelsea will consider having Maguire included in a potential deal which will see American forward Christian Pulisic move to Old Trafford. Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Mike Dean, who was on-call during Chelsea's Week 2 clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, which ended in a stalemate at 2-2, accepted that he made the wrong call during the hair-pulling incident involving Cristian Romero and Marc Cucurella. He opted to let the incident pass shortly before Spurs slotted in their late equaliser, ensuring that the point haul was shared at the end of the match.

The veteran official admitted that he should have called upon the on-field referee Anthony Taylor to review footage of the incident on the pitch-side monitor to form his own opinion regarding the same.

"I could not award a free kick as VAR, but I could recommend to Taylor that he visit the referee review area to consider a possible red card. In the few seconds I had to study Romero pulling Cucurella's hair, I didn't deem it a violent act. I've since studied the footage, spoken to other referees and, upon reflection, I should have asked Taylor to visit his pitch-side monitor to take a look for himself. The referee on field always has the final say."

It is interesting to note that this incident was not the only controversial moment in the action-packed match. Tottenham's first goal, which was scored by Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, was also an extremely contentious matter, with several complaints suggesting that the goal should have been disallowed owing to the supposed foul on Kai Havertz in the build-up of the play. In addition, claims were made regarding a potential offside offence against striker Richarlison.

While discussing the matter, Dean stood resolute in favor of his decision, claiming that Rodrigo Bentancur's potential foul on Kai Havertz took place outside the attacking phase of play. He further dismissed claims, suggesting that Richarlison was interfering with Edouard Mendy's field of vision from an offside position, declaring that the Chelsea goalkeeper had a view of the ball.

Manchester United's misery to Kevin De Bruyne magic - Takeaways from Premier League Gameweek 2

It is only the second week of Premier League's new season and the tempers are already flaring. Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel and Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte engaged in a scuffle on Sunday as Harry Kane equalised at the death, leading to delirious scenes at Stamford Bridge.

However, shortly after the final whistle was blown, both managers came across for the customary handshake and things got heated. Tuchel, who wasn't pleased with some of the referring decisions that led to Spurs' goals wanted to give his piece of mind to Conte.

The Chelsea boss didn't let go of Conte's hands and gestured him to look in his eyes. An angry Conte took offence and mouthed his criticism as the players and support staff swarmed the two heavyweight coaches to separate them.

Both coaches were eventually shown the red card by match referee Anthony Taylor who had let them off with a warning and a yellow card, earlier in the match.

It wasn't the first time that these two had squared up during the match. Earlier, when Chelsea were leading, Havertz carried a ball diligently past the Spurs' press across the half line, only to be shrugged off the ball by the Spurs defender with this particular passage of play leading to the eventual equaliser scored by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The incident incensed Tuchel who went straight in the ear of Conte who was midway into his celebration. The two faced each other and soon a tussle ensued.

Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte engage in touchline scuffle as London Derby ends in a draw

Antonio Conte, who previously coached Romelu Lukaku through his best spell in professional football at Inter Milan, recently offered his two cents on the prospects of the Belgian. While discussing Chelsea's decision to loan Lukaku to San Siro, the Italian admitted that he could have turned his performances around if he had been given more time.

In fact, 'The Godfather' expressed a great deal of confidence in Lukaku's abilities, predicting a triumphant return to Premier League football. He insisted that the £97.5m flop still had time to collect himself and eventually make his way back to Stamford Bridge to prove himself once and for all.

While discussing the 29-year-old frontman's performance at Chelsea, Conte admitted that he will most certainly be disappointed with his performance for The Blues as he failed to adjust to the tactical demands of Thomas Tuchel in West London. He merely recorded 15 goals in 44 appearances.

"I know for sure he is a bit disappointed with his impact, because he wanted to have another impact in England. But he has time. Now it's right for him to play for an important club in Italy to try to get again confidence in himself. But we are talking about a really important, a really good striker. Romelu lived two years in Milan and he was the king. The fans showed him a lot of passion and I think he’s a guy who needs this. For this reason, I think he wanted to come back in Milan, but for sure, the signing was a good signing for Chelsea. There are players that need more time to make an impact."

However, it is interesting to note that Lukaku himself admitted that pushing for a second stint at Stamford Bridge was the wrong career decision for him. Keeping that in mind, the Belgian's return to the London-based outfit is something that remains shrouded in mystery and intrigue.

With the impacts of climate change becoming more and more apparent with each passing day, Chelsea's frontman, Thomas Tuchel, recently called upon football pros to lead the world by example and tackle this threat head-on. ‘We have to adapt’- Thomas Tuchel turns climate activist as he demands action

Chelsea F.C.'s freshest signing Raheem Sterling recently looked back at the time he faced racial abuse from a fan at Stamford Bridge. He admitted that facing this abuse did not make him reconsider his move to Chelsea as the club shelled out a whopping £47.5 million to facilitate his move out of Manchester City this summer.

The English forward found himself at the receiving end of racially charged abuse from a fan during a game between Manchester City and Chelsea way back in December 2018. This prompted a serious investigation led by law enforcement and the club itself. Although the Crown Prosecution Service moved to dismiss criminal charges, the club levelled a lifetime ban on the accused.

During a media interaction ahead of Chelsea's recent clash against Tottenham Hotspur, Sterling admitted that the incident did not play on his mind at all while he was considering a move to the club. He admitted that the main reason that prompted the search for greener pastures was his refusal to accept a reduced game time at the Mancunian club.

Sterling further asserted that he was determined to help younger talent grow and flourish in the sport. He offered fans some insight into his decision to create a safe space for up-and-coming athletes to hone their craft without the threat of racial abuse hanging over their shoulders.

"Of course, football is my main goal and my main talent, but it's the other thing that gives me the most joy. That's helping people ... I've moved away from the racial side of it and am focused more on helping and nurturing young Black people."

Sterling admitted that he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his idol, Steven Gerrard, who inspired him to achieve greatness. He also declared that he was determined to create a light and joyful environment, which would eventually help youngsters feel comfortable.

On Tuesday (July 25), Cristiano Ronaldo arrived in Carrington and joined the Manchester United camp for training ahead of the new EPL season. Ronaldo was set to have a discussion with new manager Erik ten Hag regarding his future at the club. With United finishing sixth in the last EPL season, he will miss Champions League football as well for the 2022/23 season. Cristiano Ronaldo keen to exit Manchester United, club maintains he is not for sale: Report

Cristiano Ronaldo arrived in Manchester and joined the Manchester United camp on Tuesday (July 26). The superstar footballer touched down in Manchester along with his superagent Jorge Mendes to hold talks with new manager Erik ten Hag regarding his future with the Red Devils, ahead of the commencement of the new EPL season.

As per various reports, Ronaldo is eager to cut short his stay at the premier club -- with one year still remaining in his contract -- after the Red Devils failed to make a mark in the last EPL season, ending sixth and missing out on Champions League football for the 2022/23 season. Thus, Ronaldo is eager to be associated with a club where he can compete in the Champions League and, hence, the 37-year-old isn't happy with how things have panned out for him in his ongoing second innings at the club. Thus, reports suggest that the Portuguese captain has handed in a transfer request. His absence from Man United's pre-season tour of Bangkok and Australia for personal reasons further raised speculations of his exit.

Gabriel Jesus continued his impressive pre-season form with another goal as Arsenal thrashed Chelsea 4-0 in a friendly in Florida on Saturday.

Jesus, who joined Arsenal from Manchester City earlier this month, took his tally to four goals in three games for his new club in a clinical win for the Gunners in front of 63,811 fans at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium.

It was another encouraging performance for Mikel Arteta’s side, who took control of the game with two first-half goals after dominating the opening 45 minutes.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel could not hide his anger during a lacklustre first-half display from his team, who were repeatedly exposed by Arsenal’s nimble counter-attacking.

Chelsea had one promising attack after five minutes when new signing Raheem Sterling played Timo Werner into space, but French defender William Saliba snuffed out the danger with a solid covering tackle.

Arsenal should have opened the scoring moments later, when Gabriel Martinelli burst clear on the counter. The Brazilian passed to Bukayo Saka but the English international’s shot was saved by Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The Arsenal pressure finally told in the 15th minute with a goal that came after Chelsea’s Nathaniel Chalobah surrendered possession with a misplaced pass that went straight to Granit Xhaka.

The Swiss international played a superb first time ball into Jesus who coolly chipped over the advancing Mendy to make it 1-0. Martin Odegaard made it 2-0 to the Gunners in the 36th minute with another well-worked move.

Martinelli’s pass found the Norwegian playmaker in space inside the Chelsea area, and the attacking midfielder turned smoothly and tucked a low finish past Mendy.

Chelsea’s best chance of a lacklustre half came in stoppage time when Mason Mount curled a shot from the edge of the area which beat Aaron Ramsdale but crashed back off a post.

Arsenal extended their lead midway through the second half when Saka buried a rebound from close range after Mendy parried Xhaka’s long-range strike.

Arsenal continued to create chances but had to wait until injury time for their fourth goal when Albert Sambi Lokonga headed past Mendy after a superb cross from the right by Portuguese international Cedric.

Gabriel Jesus on target again as Arsenal thrash Chelsea 4-0 in pre-season clash

Will Cristiano Ronaldo stay put at Manchester United or will the superstar footballer join a new club? This remains a burning question in the football fraternity ahead of the commencement of the new EPL season. While at first it was believed that the Portugal captain will stay at the Red Devils, the situation has turned quite a lot as the 37-year-old is reportedly keen to start afresh in a new club. After Man United finished sixth last season, they will miss out on Champions League football for 2022/23 season, hence, Ronaldo is keen to make a move.

When Ronaldo's teammate and Man United midfielder Bruno Fernandes was asked about the Portuguese superstar's future with the club, the 27-year-old also remained puzzled. "I don't know what Cristiano said to the club and to the manager," Fernandes said recently. "I don't know what's going on in his head, if he wants to leave. I didn't ask them that," he opined.

"From everything we know. He had some family problems so we have to respect his space, give him some space and that's it. The only thing I asked Cristiano when he didn't turn up was if everything was OK with the family. He told me what was going on, that's it and nothing more," Fernandes added.

Cristiano Ronaldo's future with Manchester United hangs in the balance. When Ronaldo rejoined the Red Devils, after his first stint with the premier club from 2003-09, the ardent Man United fans erupted in joy. Ronaldo also had a good season with the team in 2021/22, returning with 24 goals across all competitions -- the highest goal-scorer for United -- but the team's lacklustre run in the last EPL season resulted in them finishing sixth and missing out on Champions League football for 2022/23.

Thus, Ronaldo's future with the United remains a mystery for one and all ahead of the commencement of the EPL 2022/23 season. While the 37-year-old had earlier stated that he is eager to stay and take United to more glory, things have changed in recent times with the Portuguese captain reportedly not happy at the club and handed in a transfer request. Since then, reports have been flowing in that a lot of clubs -- including Man United's arch-rival Chelsea -- have been in talks with Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes.

After Romelu Lukaku's departure, they have roped in Raheem Stirling, hence, the Portuguese striker isn't a priority for them with an already star-studded attacking line-up at their disposal, comprising Kai Haverts, Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount and Callum-Hudson Odoi.

ALSO READ | UNBELIEVABLE! Chelsea to not make a bid for Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United: Report

A lot has been said and written about Cristiano Ronaldo's possible exit from Manchester United. Commencing his second innings at the Red Devils last year, Ronaldo's presence also couldn't help United finish the last EPL season on a high, ending at the sixth spot, and missing out on Champions League football as well.

While Ronaldo had made it clear that he is not going anywhere and will continue to be at the premier club, things have changed in the past few weeks. Since his agent has reportedly held discussions with several top clubs, which includes Chelsea, Bayern Munich, PSG, etc. (even though not much interest has been shown), a new twist has unfolded in Ronaldo's transfer saga.

As per reports, the Portuguese superstar has now received a mind-boggling offer from a club in Saudi Arabia. The main reason for Ronaldo's willingness to reportedly leave the Old Trafford outfit is to continue chasing big titles at a club that can challenge for all major trophies. Thus, he is reportedly keen to move on and join some other top club. However, the search is on.

Recently, ahead of Man United's friendly tie versus Liverpool in Bangkok, new manager Erik ten Hag had cleared the air regarding Ronaldo's future at the club. UNBELIEVABLE! Saudi club makes irresistible offer for Man United's Cristiano Ronaldo: Report

Liverpool was thrashed 4-0 by Manchester United in an exhibition match held at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok on Tuesday (July 12). Despite the defeat, the Jurgen Klopp-led club still remains one of the strongest contenders for winning the forthcoming EPL season.

Liverpool is currently in Singapore where they next play Crystal Palace, in an exhibition match, at the National Stadium on Thursday (July 14). Ahead of the EPL season 2022/23, The Reds' former captain and a legend of the club Sami Hyypia opined on Mohamed Salah's extension, thrashing at the hands of new-look Manchester United in Bangkok, team's strengths and rivalry with Man City.

Sami, a former club captain who was part of Liverpool's victorious Champions League campaign in 2004-05, interacted with WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo and shared insights on many aspects. Firstly, he played down Liverpool's 4-0 loss vs Man United and said, "Yeah, everyone knows how big the rivalry is. I won't be too worried about the result. Everyone knows the circumstances under which we played. At United, there is a new manager. He wants to be successful straightaway so these friendlies are more important for him. I won't be too worried about this loss. I am sure Liverpool will be ready once the Premier League starts."

Regarding Mohamed Salah, Hyypia lavished huge praise on the 30-year-old Egyptian footballer and said, "He is a great player. One of the best players. He has shown that for many years. I'm glad he is staying here at Liverpool. When he performs like that, it is good for him as well as Liverpool. When Salah came on (in Bangkok), it looked like he had trained for a long long time. His fitness isn't a concern. He came from a holiday. Maybe that was more of a mental holiday. But, he seemed to be in good shape."

32 clean sheets in 63 games last season. Thus, without a doubt, a lot of Liverpool's success boils down to their defence and goalkeeper. In this regard, Hyypia said, "It is a great record. That department is well-equipped at the moment. We had a bit of a problem last year, with the central defence's injury, but now that department is sorted. Allison (Becker) is a world-class goalkeeper and he saved us many times last season. He made game-winning saves. In every department, maybe we are better than last season. I know Sadio Mane left for Bayern Munich but when a player wants to leave you can't force him to stay. If they aren't happy, so move on. Overall, even in that department, we are well-equipped."

It seems to be a two-horse race -- between Liverpool vs Man City -- for the top-two berth in the upcoming EPL season as well. Commenting on this, the 48-year-old veteran told, "I don't know if it is the biggest rivalry. There is a rivalry then it is all about good recruitment. It means a great atmosphere has been created. Each player knows his role. That has been great to see. The scouting department has also been great for Liverpool. They have been spot-on. They are doing an important job. It looks great. I don't think next season there will be anyone to challenge those two (Man City and Liverpool). Chelsea, and Arsenal would want to be in a position where Man City are, however, I don't think they will challenge them both."

Liverpool will look to go the distance and end with the EPL championship after ending second in the last edition. They begin their campaign versus Fulham on August 6.

Raheem Sterling bids emotional farewell to Manchester City fans ahead of Chelsea move

There has been a lot said and written about Cristiano Ronaldo's days in Manchester United. While first it was confirmed by Ronaldo himself that he is very keen on staying back and leading the club to glory in the next few seasons, the situation has turned upside down ever since.

Recently, it was revealed that Ronaldo has shown interest in moving to Chelsea after requesting to leave Man United. However, now another report have emerged regarding the superstar footballer's likely move out of the Red Devils' camp.

For the unversed, Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes has reportedly held talks with Bayern Munich as well as with Chelsea over his client's potential transfer this summer. Nonetheless, some reports have also claimed that Mendes has also met with Barcelona FC President Joan Laporta. The report of Mendes meeting Laporta was first reported by the Spanish publication AS. While nothing is official yet, his agent's meeting with the Barca president has led to widespread reaction as the club is the biggest rival of Real Madrid, where Ronaldo played for 9 years. In addition, the Portuguese captain's arch-rival Lionel Messi played most of his club football with Barcelona (for as many as 16 straight seasons, from 2005/06-2020/21).

Cristiano Ronaldo's agent meets Barcelona president as rumours of him leaving Man Utd increases: Report

Chelsea are reportedly plotting a shock move for Cristiano Ronaldo, who has already expressed his desire to leave Manchester United this summer. The Manchester United star is reportedly not happy with the United's transfer business so far this summer and has told the club he wants to leave if a suitable offer is made for him. Ronaldo had rejoined Manchester United from Juventus last year and was the club's top-scorer in the Premier League last season.

Earlier, this week, a report in Times had claimed Ronaldo has told United he is on his way out as he wants to spend the rest of his career competing in the Champions League which the Red Devils cannot offer next season. The 37-year-old Portuguese forward, who is regarded as one of the greatest of all time, has never played in the Europa League in his career.

United, who finished a disappointing sixth in the Premier League last season, are out of the Champions League and will play in the Europa League next season. Amid his desire to leave the club, Chelsea are considering making a shock move for the Manchester United icon.

As per a report in The Athletic, Chelsea are considering a move for Ronaldo and the club's new owner Todd Boehly has been in touch with Jorge Mendes, who is the agent of the Portuguese forward. The report further adds that the Chelsea owner is keen on the move but it remains to be seen if Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel will approve the transfer for the 37-year-old. While United will be in the Europa League next season, Chelsea will play in the Champions League and are one of the few clubs in the world that can afford Ronaldo's huge wages.

However, despite his goal-scoring exploits, United failed to finish inside the top four in the Premier League and endured a horrendous season.

Neymar's future at PSG remains uncertain amid reports he has made up his mind to leave the club this summer. The Brazilian superstar is reportedly unhappy after the PSG president's recent comments criticising him and his overall treatment at the club. He has already been linked with several top clubs this summer, including Chelsea, who remain among the teams who can afford the Brazilian's astronomical wages.

Amid uncertainty over Neymar's future, Chelsea defender Thiago Silva has urged his former PSG teammate to reunite with him at the Premier League club. Silva was part of the PSG dressing room with Neymar before leaving the French club to join Chelsea in 2020. Silva is also Neymar's teammate for the Brazil national side

Manchester United is aiming for a revamp ahead of the new EPL season. Despite that, the Red Devils haven't made a lot of signings. Thus, this has left Cristiano Ronaldo miffed and as per reports, he has been offered by his agent to move to Bayern Munich or Chelsea. While the Red Devils have maintained their stance that the star striker isn't up for sale, his agent Jorge Mendes is trying hard to find the best solution for the superstar footballer amid United's struggles for making a plethora of promising signings.

While there still is a couple of months for the summer transfer window to end, things might change with regard to Ronaldo. However, if he plans to switch and move to Chelsea or any other club, Man United might reportedly replace him with Paris Saint Germain (PSG) striker Neymar.

Talking about the 30-year-old Neymar, the Brazilian's case is quite opposite. Although the Brazilian hasn't indicated that he is willing to make a move from PSG, the French club is said to be looking to offload him for the right price. There are those who suggest that Neymar could be available for EUR 50 million this summer. Thus, Man United can certainly afford him at that price if they lose Ronaldo's services.

According to a report carried out in RMC Sport, Neymar remains top of Man United's wishlist as a potential replacement for Ronaldo.

After the Red Devils ended sixth in the last EPL season, there were speculations of Ronaldo leaving the club. Back then, he stated, "I was happy to be back in a club that really raised my career so it was unbelievable, the feeling when I came back again," Ronaldo said. "I was and still am very happy to be here," Ronaldo told Manchester United in an interview early this month. "The most important thing for me is to try to win the games and try to win some championship... but I believe that Manchester will be back where they belong. Sometimes it takes time, but I still believe," he added.

Thus, it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds for Ronaldo, also for Neymar, in the coming few weeks.

Chelsea said on Saturday that a final agreement had been struck to sell the Premier League club to a consortium led by Los Angeles Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly and backed by Clearlake Capital.
The takeover is expected to be completed on Monday.

The consortium, which won the bid to acquire the London side earlier this month, received approval from the Premier League and the British government this week for the sale to go ahead.

"Chelsea Football Club can confirm that a final and definitive agreement was entered into last night to sell the Club to the Todd Boehly/Clearlake Capital consortium," the club said in a statement.

"It is expected that the transaction will be completed on Monday. The club will update further at that time."

Russian owner Roman Abramovich put the club up for sale in early March following Russia`s invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a "special military operation".

The sale also needed the green light from the Portugal government after Abramovich became a citizen of the country last year and is under European Union sanctions.

Chelsea had been operating under a special license issued by the British government since Abramovich`s assets were frozen in March, and it was set to expire on May 31.

The club previously confirmed Abramovich would donate all proceeds from the sale, which would be placed in a frozen bank account, to charitable causes.

"I am proud that as a result of our joint successes, millions of people will now benefit from the new charitable foundation which is being established," Abramovich said in a statement published on Chelsea`s website.

Abramovich bought the club in 2003 and helped Chelsea become a dominant force in English football, leading them to five Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two Champions League trophies during his reign.

"My goal has been to ensure that the next owner has a mindset that will enable success," Abramovich added. "I am pleased this search has now come to a successful conclusion.

"As I hand over Chelsea to its new custodians, I would like to wish them the best of success, both on and off the pitch.

"It has been an honour of a lifetime to be a part of this club. I would like to thank all the club`s past and current players, staff, and of course fans for these incredible years."

The completion of the sale will allow Chelsea to renew transfer activity as well as permit players to sign new contracts, which was prohibited as part of the sanctions imposed.

Chelsea reach final agreement for sale of club to Boehly-led consortium

Portugal has given its blessing to the sale of Chelsea by Russian-born billionaire Roman Abramovich, who became a Portuguese citizen last year and is under European Union sanctions, the Foreign Ministry said on Thursday. He put the London club up for sale in early March following Russia`s invasion of Ukraine. Abramovich has been sanctioned by the British government and the European Union over his links to Vladimir Putin. He has denied having close ties to the Russian President.

The British government on Wednesday authorised the sale to a consortium led by Los Angeles Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly and backed by Clearlake Capital, which had agreed terms to buy Chelsea for 4.25 billion pounds ($5.35 billion). The Portuguese government issued a humanitarian waiver requested by Abramovich allowing the sale, the foreign ministry said, adding that the decision had been agreed with the European Commission.

"The Portuguese authorisation stems from the guarantee given by the British authorities that the proceeds from the sale will be used for humanitarian purposes, not benefiting directly or indirectly the owner of the club, who is on the sanctions list of the European Union," it said. The club, which had been operating under a government licence since Abramovich`s assets were frozen in March, had earlier confirmed that the proceeds will be donated to charitable causes by Abramovich.

There is little known history of Sephardic Jews in Russia and the case sent shockwaves across Portugal, leading public prosecutors to launch an investigation and to the detention of a rabbi responsible for the certification that allowed Abramovich to obtain citizenship.

The Boehly-Clearlake consortium, which agreed terms to acquire Chelsea for 4.25 billion pounds ($5.33 billion) earlier this month, passed the Premier League Owners` and Directors` Test, the league said on Tuesday, paving the way for the club`s takeover.

The proposal also needs approval from the British government before the consortium can complete the acquisition, with a week remaining before the club`s current operating licence expires on May 31. "The Board has applied the Premier League`s Owners` and Directors` Test (OADT) to all prospective Directors, and undertaken the necessary due diligence," the league said in a statement.

"The members of the consortium purchasing the club are affiliates of the Clearlake Capital Group, L.P., Todd Boehly, Hansjorg Wyss and Mark Walter." "Chelsea FC will now work with the relevant governments to secure the necessary licences to complete the takeover."

The British government is set to approve the sale after Chelsea`s Russian owner Roman Abramovich gave assurances he will not benefit from the deal, a source familiar with the situation told Reuters.
Currently subject to sanctions by the British government, Abramovich put the London club up for sale in early March following Russia`s invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a "special military operation".
Abramovich dismissed reports that he wanted a loan given to the club, reportedly worth 1.5 billion pounds ($1.88 billion), to be repaid.

Chelsea previously confirmed all proceeds from the sale, which would be placed in a frozen UK bank account, will be donated to charitable causes by Abramovich. Groups led by Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca and former British Airways chairman Martin Broughton were earlier eliminated from the bidding process while a consortium led by Chicago Cubs owners the Ricketts family pulled out of the running.

Premier League gives green signal to proposed takeover of Chelsea by Todd Boehly-led consortium

The UK government on Wednesday (May 25) approved Chelsea football club's sale to Todd Boehly-led consortium in a deal worth 4.25 billion pounds (around 5.2 billion USD). The approval of the club's sale marks an end to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's 19-year-long ownership of the Blues. Abramovich had bought Chelsea in the year 2003 when the club had not won a single league title since the 1955/56 season. The Russian went on to transform Chelsea into one of the best football clubs in the world and inspired them to incredible success during his era.

Abramovich had put Chelsea up for sale just two weeks after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The invasion saw the UK government sanction Russian billionaires operating in the country, including Abramovich. The deal was approved on Wednesday after months of negotiations with the UK government ensuring that the proceeds from the sale will be frozen in a UK bank account.

The UK government also received legal guarantees that the sale will not benefit Abramovich, whose assets in the UK have already been frozen in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. While the ending of his reign at Chelsea is certainly not what Abramovich would have expected, he made the club a force to reckon with under his ownership.

Under Abramovich's ownership, Chelsea won as many as 21 major trophies, including an impressive five Premier League and 2 Champions League titles. Their latest Champions League triumph came under current manager Thomas Tuchel in the 2020-21 season.
