Chelsea are dealing with British government restrictions on their operations in a professional manner and will do whatever it takes to advance in their Champions League last-16 second-leg tie at Lille on Wednesday, coach Thomas Tuchel said.

Chelsea's Russian owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the government while the Premier League has also disqualified him as a director.

Under the terms of a licence issued by the government, Chelsea's operations are limited in scope.

Tuchel said the European champions had to make adjustments in how many staff are travelling and staying in Lille and that such discussions had never taken place before, with an operations team taking care of all their needs.

"We have to deal with it. There are new things to talk about, like how to arrive at games. Things that are normally taken care of," Tuchel told reporters on the eve of the return leg in France, with Chelsea leading 2-0 from the first game.

"We have a framework to go to Lille and play in Lille. There will be no excuses. It's already more difficult to arrange things in the best way possible for the FA Cup (quarter-final at Middlesbrough on Saturday)."

"As long as we have shirts, as long as we are alive, we will arrive, be competitive and fight hard for our success. We owe it to the people who normally support us ... Of course, we`re in the spotlight but this is our responsibility."

Tuchel added that he did not have a choice in being the voice of the club in a tumultuous two-week period and said he would continue to face questions about any new owner.

"A new owner needs to arrive, needs to be approved, and then be allowed to own the football club. Then we can discuss about it, if it`s necessary," Tuchel said.

"There is a process how you become an owner in this league, and of course ... everybody relies on the process and the values which are behind the decisions and allowance to run a club.

"I don't think too much about it (being the voice of the club). I try to be honest, give you an insight and give you information from a coach`s heart. This is what I try and what you can rely on."

Chelsea fans have been urged by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's spokesperson not to chant for Abramovich, terming it "completely inappropriate" under the circumstances, but Tuchel said he did not want to comment on the matter.

"I don't know if it`s the most important subject to be discussed in parliament. If it is, maybe we have to worry about the priority of discussions there," Tuchel said.

"There are far more urgent things to discuss and handle."

Chelsea will continue to fight hard for success, says coach Thomas Tuchel amid Roman Abramovich crisis

Chelsea put aside their off-field turmoil to keep a grip on third place in the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Newcastle United while Arsenal leapfrogged Manchester United into fourth with a 2-0 victory over Leicester City on Sunday.

Everton's plummet towards the relegation zone continued as they lost 1-0 at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers but Leeds United gained some respite with a last-gasp 2-1 win over bottom club Norwich City.

Leaders Manchester City, who are three points ahead of Liverpool, are at Crystal Palace on Monday.

Liverpool won 2-0 at Brighton on Sunday.

The 19-year reign of Chelsea's owner and backer Roman Abramovich effectively came to an end this week after the UK government imposed sanctions on the Russian, with the club operating under a special licence.

With the club up for sale and dealing with a series of restrictions on their current operations, it was perhaps not surprising that Chelsea were far from their best against Eddie Howe's improving Newcastle.

But with the match seemingly heading for a draw, Jorginho launched a long pass over the Newcastle defence to Kai Havertz and the German's brilliant control allowed him to fire past Martin Dubravka for his fourth goal in three league games.

Chelsea's German manager Thomas Tuchel said the team had a responsibility to those at the club facing a much more difficult situation than the playing and coaching staff.

"There are a lot of people that I see on a daily basis who are worried and who work for decades. They are not so famous but they are worried for a pretty close future, wonder if things will be alright," he said.

"So for them, it's important to have the attitude right and also to focus on that and see the responsibility and what this means to these people. Even if it's just for 90 minutes," he added.

Goals from Thomas Partey and Alexandre Lacazette earned Arsenal a comfortable 2-0 win over Leicester at the Emirates.

The win moves the Gunners a point ahead of Manchester United but crucially Mikel Arteta's side have three games in hand on their rivals for the final

Champions League slot.

Arsenal have now won their last five games and a run of nine wins from their last eleven encounters in the Premier League has transformed their season after a poor start to the campaign.

Partey opened the scoring with an 11th-minute header and Lacazette made sure of the win, after the break, from the penalty spot.

Arsenal have a great chance to return to Champions League football for the first time since the 2016/17 season but Arteta said work remained to be done.

"We have to be there, we should be there. Our history obliges to be there but we are not there yet and there are still a lot of games to play," he said.

EVERTON LOSE AGAIN

Everton suffered their fourth straight defeat thanks to a 49th-minute header from Wolves defender Conor Coady leaving Frank Lampard's team only above the relegation zone on goal difference.

The Toffees are in 17th place on 22 points, the same as 18th placed Watford and just one more than 19th placed Burnley.

Leeds United have similar concerns to the Merseysiders but their survival hopes were boosted by a 2-1 win at Norwich which moved them four points above Everton.

Joe Gelhardt came off the bench to score a stoppage-time winner and give American coach Jesse Marsch his first win since replacing Marcelo Bielsa.

Rodrigo had put Leeds ahead in the 14th minute but their hopes of three points looked to have been dashed by Kenny McLean's stoppage-time leveller.

But then 19-year-old Gelhardt, who had been on the field for less than two minutes, tapped in from close range to the relief of the Elland Road crowd.

Roy Hodgson's Watford showed they are determined to fight for survival with a 2-1 win at Southampton earned by two goals from Cucho Hernandez.

Ukrainian Andriy Yarmolenko was on target for West Ham in their 2-1 win over Aston Villa.

Premier League: Chelsea strike late to beat Newcastle 1-0 amid off-field turmoil, Arsenal outclass Leicester

As threats to sanction Russia's oligarchs intensify across western nations the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich has put the club world champions Chelsea up for sale. The oligarch was facing growing pressure and promises that he will donate money from the sale to war victims in Ukraine.

The UK sanctions Russian Oligarch Roman Abramovich as he puts football club Chelsea up for sale

The British government on Thursday announced sanctions on Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich while freezing his assets. Amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine, several countries across the globe have imposed sanctions on the country while many sporting bodies have also banned Russian teams, athletes and staff from taking part in their tournaments.

Russia has been immense criticism from all corners as Ukraine continues to suffer in the ongoing war. Abramovich was among seven Russian billionaires sanctioned by the UK government in the wake of the Ukraine invasion. Abramovich, who is said to have close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, had taken over Chelsea in 2003 and has since made the club a force to reckon with in club football.

Chelsea have won five English Premier League titles and two Champions League titles since Abramovich took over the club, including a European triumph last year. However, the club's future is now uncertain after the UK government's sanctions on its Russian owner.

Can Chelsea continue playing?

The sanctions imposed on Abramovich could have forced Chelsea to stop running as a business and barred the club from continuing in any of the competitions that they are part of, including the English Premier League. However, the UK government has issued a special license to Chelsea to continue operations with several restrictions. So Chelsea will be allowed to play but they will be banned from several marketing activities including ticket sales, merchandise sales and players transfers among others.

A look at things Chelsea are allowed to do:

Chelsea are allowed to play matches in all competitions that they are part of. However, there can only spend up to only 500,000 pounds ($657,000) on playing each game at Stamford Bridge, including security and catering.

Only season-ticket holders are the ones who will be allowed to attend the club's remaining matches at their home stadium and away from home. The ticket sales have been prohibited.

The club will continue to receive broadcast money from their ongoing deals. However, the money will be frozen in the club's bank account and will be monitored by the UK government.

The club will continue to pay the wages to its staff and players. There are no restrictions on the wages, however, as per reports, Chelsea have laid off several staff members already.

What are things Chelsea are not allowed to do?

No player recruitment or contract renewal of existing players. Chelsea will not be allowed to make any new signings or renew the deals of their existing players under the terms of the government license that runs till May 31 this year. This means the club might lose the services of the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta, Toni Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, who are all in the final year of their respective contracts.

No ticket sales. Chelsea will not be allowed to sell tickets and earn any match day revenue from their fans. Only the season-ticket holders, who have already purchased their tickets will be allowed to attend the matches both at home and in Europe till the sanction is in effect.

No merchandise sale. All Chelsea club stores have been shut down in the UK as the club has been banned from selling any merchandise under the current license. Chelsea won't be able to sell any club shirts, memorabilia or other items.

The sale of the club halted. Abramovich had listed Chelsea up for sale in the wake of outrage in the British parliament over his alleged ties with Putin. However, the British government's sanctions have handed him a huge blow in his aspirations as the club's sale has been stalled. Britain's technology minister Chris Philp on Friday said that any prospective bidders interested in taking over Chelsea should contact the British government directly.

Anyone interested in buying Chelsea Football Club can approach the British government and make a proposal, the government said on Friday after it sanctioned current owner Roman Abramovich and halted his planned sale of the club.

The government, which has been under pressure to ramp up sanctions on Russian oligarchs after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine late last month, imposed a travel ban and froze the assets owned by Abramovich on Thursday.

The announcement effectively brought to a halt his recently-announced plans to sell the West London football club, which he had expected to fetch more than three billion pounds ($3.93 billion).

Separately, London-listed Russian steelmaker Evraz, in which Abramovich is the largest shareholder with a 28.6% stake according to Refinitiv Eikon, said on Friday its entire board had quit.

Chelsea says it will seek changes to post-sanctions operating licence from British government

Britain's government on Thursday imposed sanctions on Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, handing a huge blow to his plans of selling Chelsea football club. In the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war, Abramovich had put Chelsea up for sale after the British government started tightening the noose on Russian billionaires operating in the country.

On Thursday, the British government announced sanctions on seven Russians, including Abramovich. The assets of the seven Russian billionaires will be frozen by the government. However, the British government confirmed that it will allow Chelsea football club to continue playing their matches across competitions despite the sanctions on its owner.

The sanctions mean Abramovich's ability to see Chelsea has also been frozen by the government. The Russian cannot sell the club for now as the asset freeze and sanctions bar the process of a sale under the terms of the license that was granted to the club.

However, the British government has issued a special license to Chelsea which will allow the club to continue playing their matches without any disruption. The license also ensures that the club will pay their staff and players in time, and the ticket holders will be allowed to attend the club's matches.

The chief executive of crypto exchange Binance discussed buying Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich`s Premier League soccer club Chelsea but has ruled out any such deal, a spokesperson for Binance has told Reuters. Chelsea will not have a queue of buyers lining up outside Stamford Bridge, according to one of the advisors who helped Roman Abramovich purchase the Premier League club in 2003.

Thomas Tuchel admitted he cannot imagine life without Roman Abramovich after the Russian billionaire's stunning decision to put Chelsea up for sale. Abramovich has come to the "incredibly difficult" conclusion that he must sell Chelsea amid the political fall-out from Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The 55-year-old revealed the shock news less than an hour before Chelsea kicked off in their 3-2 FA Cup fifth-round win at Luton on Wednesday. Abramovich bought Chelsea in 2003 and his vast investment helped the west London club win 19 major trophies, including five Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns. He hired Tuchel in January 2021 and was in Abu Dhabi recently to watch as Chelsea won the Club World Cup for the first time, having already lifted the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup in the German's reign. Abramovich reportedly opted to sell Chelsea amid fears he could come under British government sanctions given his alleged links to Russian President Vladimir Putin. With a consortium of billionaires already making their interest in a deal public, Abramovich set his asking price for Chelsea at a reported £3 billion ($4 billion) and pledged to give the net proceeds to victims of the Ukraine conflict. Swiss tycoon Hansjorg Wyss and American investor Todd Boehly, a co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, are understood to be two of the parties joining forces to bid for the Blues. Tuchel and his players only learned of the oligarch's decision to sell up shortly before the Luton match. 'Massive change' And he conceded he needed time to get to grips with the seismic changes on the horizon in the post-Abramovich world. "It's a bit too early to speak, because I can only think about Chelsea with Roman Abramovich. So it's very hard for me. It hasn't sunk in yet that this is going to stop. It's a massive change of course," Tuchel said. Asked if the bombshell announcement had rocked his players given their creaky display for long periods against second tier Luton, Tuchel said: "They have internet connections, they watch TV so of course they knew, they get messages. But still we focused in the preparation only on sports. "And maybe some players are more affected, some less, but in the end we managed to focus, grow into this game and find the key to win it." Publicly at least, he remains calm and insisted the sale will not be a problem as his main focus remains on the players and his staff. "I don't think I need to talk about it, I don't know as much as maybe you think. I'm not a CEO or member of the board. So, I'm very sure the club will speak to us and the players," he said. "I'm not so much worried because I still feel privileged and in a good place. And I still hope and trust for the best. I'm not so much the person who worries about things I cannot influence. Boehly, is founder and CEO of Eldridge Industries and was reported to have made an attempt to buy Chelsea in 2019. Eldridge did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Liverpool held their nerve to win an astonishing penalty shoot-out 11-10 and edge out Chelsea in the English League Cup final on Sunday after a rip-roaring contest had somehow ended 0-0 after extra time at Wembley.

Both sides could claim to have been deserving winners in a classic free-flowing encounter full of goalscoring chances, remarkable saves and four disallowed goals.

Even in the penalty shoot-out the two heavyweights were inseparable with 21 successful kicks ratcheting up the tension.

In the end it came down to an unlikely duel between two goalkeepers with Liverpool's young Irish shot-stopper Caoimhin Kelleher belting his penalty past Kepa Arrizabalaga who had replaced Edouard Mendy for the shoot-out.

Spaniard Arrizabalaga then blazed his effort over the bar into the massed ranks of Liverpool supporters who celebrated the club's first domestic Cup silverware for a decade.

While Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp had won the Premier League and Champions League since arriving at Anfield, it was a rare cup success for the German who had won only two of his previous eight finals with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.

For Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel it meant his hopes of a fourth trophy in just over a year at Stamford Bridge fell just short. He won the Champions League last season and the European SuperCup and FIFA Club World Cup this season.

Klopp's decision to stay loyal to stand-in keeper Kelleher, who has featured throughout the run to the final, rather than revert to Alisson, was richly rewarded, although the Irishman could hardly have imagined scoring the decisive penalty in a shootout.

"It's a mad one. When it came down to me I didn't even think I had scored the winning penalty," he said. "It was more hit and hope.

"I got close to (stopping) a few but all the penalties were very high quality; thankfully we were able to win."

Chelsea, bidding to win a sixth League Cup, might well feel aggrieved after having arguably the better chances.

Kelleher was to prove a thorn in their side all afternoon, making one superb reflex save early on after Cesar Azpilicueta's ball in was met by the unmarked Christian Pulisic.

DOUBLE SAVE

Chelsea were sharper in the early exchanges but were fortunate in the 17th minute when Sadio Mane got his angles all wrong with a header from Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross.

Liverpool gradually grew into the game and Chelsea were indebted to a stunning double save by Mendy, first keeping out Naby Keita's low strike from the edge of the area and then springing across to deflect Mane`s follow-up over the bar.

A relentless first half ended with Chelsea threatening again, with Mason Mount volleying wide from a Kai Havertz cross.

Three minutes after the break Havertz handed Mount an even better chance with a dinked-through pass but this time the England midfielder's shot rebounded off the inside of the post, leaving Tuchel beating the ground in frustration.

The chances continued to flow, with Mohamed Salah played clean through, but his chip over Mendy lacked weight and Thiago Silva cleared the ball off the line.

Joel Matip thought he had put Liverpool ahead when he nodded in after Mane's header bounced up but, as the fans let off red flares, the goal was disallowed by referee Stuart Attwell afterchecking a pitchside monitor.

The cut and thrust continued with Salah again denied by Mendy before Chelsea had a goal chalked off for offside after substitutes Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner combined to set up Havertz to force a header past Kelleher.

Even in the six minutes of stoppage time both sides were still throwing punches, with Mendy keeping out Virgil van Dijk's thumping header before Werner squandered a chance.

Chelsea had two goal disallowed in extra time, first when Lukaku cut in from the right and drilled a shot past Kelleher but was adjudged marginally offside. Then the impressive Havertz fired past Kelleher but again the German's celebrations were cut short.

Arrizabalaga was sent on by Tuchel at the end of extra time, specifically for his penalty-saving acumen, but instead of being the hero, he handed the trophy to Liverpool.

Diogo Jota may be available for Liverpool at Wembley but Roberto Firmino will miss the EFL Cup final on Sunday.

Both are making progress in their respective recoveries, though only Jota (ankle) has a chance of being part of Jurgen Klopp's squad to face Chelsea, with Firmino (muscle) further away from fitness."Bobby we have to see in the next two days.

Roberto Firmino set to miss EPL final against Chelsea, Diogo Jota's participation hangs in balance

Liverpool are still waiting to see if forwards Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota will return from injury for Sunday's League Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley, manager Juergen Klopp said on Monday.

Firmino and Jota picked up muscle and ankle injuries respectively during Liverpool's 2-0 Champions League win at Inter Milan last week. The pair missed their 3-1 Premier League win at home over Norwich City at the weekend.

"Yes, it's too early," Klopp told the club website when asked about their availability.

Chelsea snatched a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday courtesy of an 89th-minute strike by Moroccan winger Hakim Ziyech as the newly crowned world champions returned to winning ways in the Premier League after nearly a month`s absence.

Ziyech kept his eye on a looping cross by substitute Marcos Alonso and calmly side-footed in the volley at the far post to give Chelsea the win that they had looked unlikely to claim for much of the match.

Palace limited the visitors to only a handful of opportunities including a 35-yard pile-driver shot by centre-half Antonio Rudiger in the 11th minute that Vicente Guaita palmed away acrobatically.

The hosts had their own chances with Wilfried Zaha and Michael Olise coming close to breaking the deadlock as Palace sought to catch the visitors on the counter-attack.

Chelsea, who last weekend won the FIFA World Club Cup and next weekend face Liverpool in the League Cup final, have struggled to get the best out of record signing Romelu Lukaku and he mostly cut a lonely figure once again.

The win left Chelsea seven points behind second-placed Liverpool who beat Norwich City and 13 points behind league leaders Manchester City who play Tottenham Hotspur later on Saturday. Palace sit in 13th place.

Chelsea were crowned FIFA Club World Cup champions for the first time as Kai Havertz struck home a penalty deep into extra time to break the hearts of Brazilian club Palmeiras on Saturday.

Havertz, scorer of the winning goal in last season's European Champions League final, was as cool as a cucumber as he converted in the 117th minute after Palmeiras's Luan had conceded the spot-kick with a handball.

Palmeiras's misery was complete when Luan was sent off in stoppage time for a desperate tackle on Havertz.

Chelsea has now won every major club trophy since Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich took control in 2003.

The final in the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium, where around 15,000 Palmeiras fans outnumbered Chelsea supporters, took a while to come to life.

Chelsea, who lost 2012 final to Brazilian side Corinthians, became increasingly dominant though and took the lead in the 55th minute when Romelu Lukaku powered in a header.

Palmeiras hit back shortly afterwards when Thiago Silva was adjudged to have handled the ball and Raphael Veiga converted from the spot to send the Brazilian fans wild.

Chelsea looked stronger in extra time but a penalty shootout loomed until Luan's raised arm was struck by Cesar Azpilicueta's volley from close range and after a VAR check referee Chris Beath went to check a pitch-side monitor.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel downplayed his side`s subdued performance in a 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League, attributing their lack of cutting edge to frustration at slipping up in the title race.

Chelsea`s players were far from their best in the draw, which extended their winless run in the league to four games and left them 12 points behind leaders Manchester City, having played a game more.

"After the loss against City and the gap opening up, playing two days later on a Tuesday again, I could see and feel from myself and the team some emotions took over, maybe frustration, disappointment and whatever and it was hard for us to reach our top level on this particular day," Tuchel told reporters ahead of Chelsea`s match against Tottenham Hotspur.

"It was the very first time so when it happens, we should not make a big deal out of it."

Chelsea next play host to Spurs, who they have already beaten on three occasions this season, having recorded a 3-0 aggregate win in the two-legged League Cup semi-final this month and a Premier League win against them in September.

However, Tuchel insisted that his side`s recent record against their London rivals does not give them a psychological advantage heading into Sunday`s tie.

"It is a big rivalry, we know this," Tuchel said. "We have played them three times in a short period of time."They know what we do, and what they do. We have managed to beat them twice and we will try to again."It is not about having whatever advantages. If we are philosophical about it, we need to have the right attitude to deliver a top performance."

Premier League: Thomas Tuchel downplays Chelsea's subdued performances before Spurs clash

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel on Monday refused to single out misfiring striker Romelu Lukaku for further criticism following his display in their Premier League loss to Manchester City.

Chelsea were beaten 1-0 by league leaders City on Saturday and Tuchel had expressed frustration with Lukaku`s performance after the match but said on Monday that it was wrong to pin the blame for the team`s performance on a single player.

"I think we do everything to help (Lukaku)," the manager told a news conference ahead of Chelsea`s trip to Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday.

"This is what we do for any player. This is a team sport and it`s not about 10 players serving one player. It is not Chelsea and it is not football. Every player is there to serve the team. This is the highest principle and won`t change.

"We expected more from all our offensive players in the last match. I think we had enough offensive actions, transitions, to hurt Man City more than we did."

The defeat sent Chelsea down to third in the standings, 13 points behind City and two behind second-placed Liverpool and Tuchel added that easing the pressure of expectation on Lukaku would be key to the striker finding his best form.

"He`s a key player, so there will always be pressure but not more pressure than he puts on himself," the manager said. "We need to find a mix between all the expectations, the pressure, and to be relaxed enough to play your best game.

"It`s not only about pushing, squeezing, demands, it`s also about feeling peace and being relaxed on the pitch. Things will fall into place when we keep on working hard and this is what we will keep on doing."

The German would not be drawn on whether the title race was already over, saying that his team would never give up.
"We have to admit that City is in a very strong place," Tuchel said.

"The second thing is we will never give up, never never never, until the race is over. I told you many weeks before we are in a good place as we are in the middle of the race. Well, maybe not anymore but we are in the race.

"This is what we have to show now, a relentless spirit and it cannot lower our ambition and commitment in how we play, train and what we give."

Chelsea doing all they can to help misfiring Romelu Lukaku, says Thomas Tuchel

Manchester City took a major step towards retaining their Premier League title with a 1-0 win over second-placed Chelsea on Saturday, opening up a 13-point lead at the top of the table for Pep Guardiola`s side.

Kevin De Bruyne`s 70th-minute strike means that City have 56 points from 22 matches with Chelsea on 43 points. Third-placed Liverpool, who have two games in hand, including Sunday`s match at home to Brentford, are on 42 points.

City extended their winning run in the league to 12 games, and deservedly so after another display of their controlled possession football.

But it was a disappointing effort from a Chelsea side which rarely threatened, displayed scant ambition and little reaction after De Bruyne`s goal.

There were surprises in both team line-ups, with Guardiola leaving central defender Ruben Dias on the bench and Thomas Tuchel making the same choice over midfielder Mason Mount.

Chances were hard to come by in the opening 45 minutes with the best occasion falling to Jack Grealish, after De Bruyne robbed Mateo Kovacic on the edge of the box. But Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga did well to keep out the midfielder`s effort.
Chelsea`s best effort had come early in the second half when Kovacic fed Romelu Lukaku, but City keeper Ederson rushed out quickly to make a fine save.

It was a fine solo goal from De Bruyne which settled the outcome, the Belgian riding a challenge from N`golo Kante before beating Kepa Arrizabalaga with a curling shot into the far corner.

Phil Foden could have added a second for City six minutes from the end, but his shot from a promising position was high and wide.
"It’s always difficult against them. They are tight defensively, know what they are doing, and you have to be patient," said De Bruyne.
"We played the game we needed to play and did what we had to do," he added.

Kevin de Bruyne's goal helps Manchester City beat Chelsea 1-0, go 13 points clear on top

Chelsea seized control of their league cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur, beating their London rivals 2-0 in the first leg on Wednesday thanks to an early strike by Kai Havertz and an own goal by Spurs defender Ben Davies.
The Blues, who had enough chances to put the tie beyond doubt, swamped the visitors from the start as they sought to book their place in their third final under coach Thomas Tuchel who has yet to mark his first anniversary at Stamford Bridge. After a mix-up in the Spurs defence in the fifth minute, Havertz fired an angled shot that was goal-bound before it went in off the foot of Davinson Sanchez.

Half an hour later, the dominant hosts got their second goal, albeit with a slice of luck, when Japhet Tanganga headed away a Hakim Ziyech free kick, only for the ball to rebound into the Spurs net off Davies` shoulder.
The win, while not as thumping as it could have been, dented the hopes of Spurs, under former Chelsea coach Antonio Conte, of winning a first trophy since lifting the league cup in 2008. In that time, Chelsea have won 12 major trophies including three Premier League and two Champions League titles.

Tuchel restored record signing Romelu Lukaku to the team having dropped him for Sunday`s 2-2 draw with Liverpool as punishment for the Belgian saying in an interview that he was unhappy with his role at Stamford Bridge.
Lukaku went close with a first-half header, created a great chance for Ziyech after the break which the Moroccan wasted and hit an injury-time shot straight at Hugo Lloris.

Chelsea also welcomed back Timo Werner after a period out with COVID-19. On as a substitute for Havertz at halftime, the German striker flashed a shot just wide and then failed to chip Lloris when clean through.
Spurs created a few chances in the second half but the only one that really troubled Chelsea came as late as the 90th minute when Bryan Gil, out wide, cut the ball back to fellow substitute Giovani Lo Celso whose shot was saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea dominate Tottenham Hotspur with 2-0 win in first leg of league cup

Chelsea fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Liverpool in a breathless encounter between the two title chasers at Stamford Bridge on Sunday but the stalemate left Manchester City 10 points clear at the top.

The draw meant Chelsea remained second on 43 points from 21 games, one point ahead of Liverpool, who have a game in hand, and leaders Manchester City who have 53 points from 21.

With both sides weakened by key absences - and Chelsea dropping striker Romelu Lukaku after he criticised the tactics of coach Thomas Tuchel - Liverpool quickly seemed to have the game in their grip after goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah before they depart for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Mane capitalised on an error by Trevoh Chalobah to open the scoring in the ninth minute and Salah doubled the lead 17 minutes later when he ghosted past Marcos Alonso to lift the ball over goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from a tight angle.

But the Blues clawed their way back into the game in the 42nd minute when Mateo Kovacic majestically volleyed in off a post from the edge of the box after a punched clearance by Liverpool reserve keeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Four minutes later, Chelsea were level when Christian Pulisic latched onto a pass by N'Golo Kante that beat Liverpool's offside trap and the American forward coolly lifted the ball over Kelleher into the net.

Both sides went close in the second half with Mendy and Kelleher pulling off good saves.

Premier League: Chelsea battle back to draw 2-2 with Liverpool

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel will hold talks with Romelu Lukaku on Monday to discuss recent comments by the Belgian that were critical of the coach`s tactics and which cost the striker his place in Sunday`s 2-2 home draw with Liverpool.

Lukaku, signed from Inter Milan in the close season for a club-record 97.5 million pounds ($131.74 million), had told Sky Italy https://sport.sky.it/calciomercato/2021/12/30/lukaku-sky-intervista-speciale?itm_source=parsely-api he was unhappy with Tuchel`s system, adding he would like to return to Italy at some point in his career.

Tuchel declined to reveal what he would say to Lukaku in Monday`s meeting or whether the 28-year-old will be back in the side for Wednesday`s League Cup semi-final, first leg at home to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

"I cannot tell you what I want from a meeting that is happening behind closed doors tomorrow. I cannot speak out publicly and I will not," Tuchel told reporters.

The German said Lukaku had been dropped to avoid distracting the team from Sunday`s encounter with Liverpool.

"The noise was too big," Tuchel added. "It was too much noise, we lost totally the focus for the match and we took the decision to delay the decision."

The coach said deferring the discussion with Lukaku would "protect Romelu from a rash decision.

"We need to speak to him, we need to read the full interview and stay calm and not lose our head. He is our player and will stay our player. We will always protect our player.

"And when we make certain decisions like these, we need to evaluate the situation and not listen to the media or pressure but understand what he said, why he said (it) and this is the meeting tomorrow. From there we will take the decision."

Tuchel said Sunday`s draw with Liverpool had been "a brilliant game of football" and his side had been unlucky to find themselves two goals down before claiming a point.

"Coming back from 2-0 was immense," he said.
