Chelsea's dominant second-half performance was rewarded with goals for Thiago Silva, N'Golo Kante and Antonio Rudiger in a comfortable 3-0 victory at London rivals Tottenham Hotspur that sent them joint top of the Premier League on Sunday.

The emphatic scoreline did not look likely in the first half as the home side's energetic display allowed them to more than match Chelsea. But Spurs simply had no answer when the Blues found another couple of gears after the break.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel's decision to replace Mason Mount with Kante at halftime proved a masterstroke as the French midfielder helped the visitors seize control and ease to a victory that sent out an ominous warning in the title race.

Thiago's header gave Chelsea the lead in the 49th minute and when Kante's deflected shot crept past Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris shortly after there was no way back for the deflated hosts.

Rudiger's late strike was enough to give Chelsea an identical record to Liverpool with the two sides on 13 points from five games, both having scored 12 goals and conceded one.

On the day Tottenham mourned the passing of Jimmy Greaves, the club's greatest-ever scorer, their modern-day goal machine Harry Kane had another disappointing day and is yet to add to his 166 league goals for the club this season.

Spurs faded badly after the interval and their abysmal Premier League record against Chelsea now reads: played 59, won seven, drawn 20, lost 32.

After winning their first three Premier League games of the season 1-0 to lead the table, Totenham have now suffered back-to-back 3-0 reverses and have slipped to seventh.

"I was absolutely not happy with the first 45 minutes," Tuchel said. "There were individual performances which were great in the first half from (keeper) Kepa and Thiago Silva.

"In general we lacked intent, energy and relentlessness in duels and 50-50 balls. We spoke about it at halftime. In the second half it was a very good performance and a deserved win."

ENERGETIC FOOTBALL

Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo handed a first league appearance of the season to powerful midfielder Tanguy Ndombele and he impressed in a first half in which the hosts' energetic football kept Chelsea on the back foot.

Spurs had a series of half chances and wasted a great opportunity when Son Heung-min's pass released Sergio Reguilon down the left but the Spanish full back could not pick out either of two team mates who were waiting in the area.

Son also had a fleeting chance when picked out by Giovani Lo Celso, yet despite Tottenham's impressive play there was always the sense that Chelsea had much more in the tank.

And so it proved.

Straight after the restart, Marcos Alonso's stretching volley forced Lloris into his first save of the match and a couple of minutes later Alonso swung over a corner that Thiago met with a powerful downward header that gave Lloris no chance.

All the belief Spurs had shown suddenly evaporated and they found themselves with a mountain to climb in the 57th minute as Kante's shot took a cruel deflection off Eric Dier's foot and dribbled into the corner off the post with Lloris wrong-footed.

Chelsea looked hungry for more goals and they got their third when Timo Werner picked out central defender Rudiger and he dispatched a low shot into the bottom corner.

Classy Chelsea crush Tottenham to go joint top

Chelsea are not yet playing at their best but are doing enough to ensure they remain a tough side to beat in the Premier League, manager Thomas Tuchel said on Friday (September 17).

European champions Chelsea are in second place level on 10 points with league leaders Manchester United, Liverpool and Everton but Tuchel acknowledged they had issues to sort out after a draw at Liverpool and home win over Aston Villa.

"I did not expect us to be at our top level in early September and not after this particular preseason. After a long corona period," Tuchel told reporters ahead of Sunday's (September 19) match at London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who are one point behind.

"For me at the moment, it's more important that we are competitive, we play relentless and have belief to overcome difficult minutes and periods within games... competitions are hard. It's a good thing that we are able to win.

"I'm not saying we're not playing well, we can play better but we are tough to beat. A win helps with atmosphere -- keep calm and also be open to criticism. In the moment, I feel everybody is aware that we can do better."

Tuchel added that it was "always a good time" to play Spurs and looked forward to the clash of the two teams' strikers -- Chelsea's Romelu Lukaku and Spurs' Harry Kane.

While Lukaku has hit the ground running with three goals in three starts on his Premier League return, Kane has yet to open his league account after winning the Golden Boot last season.

"They score decisive goals and love to score, always score no matter what the competition is," the German manager said.

"That's the similarity but apart from this they are very different players. If Kane plays, we have to focus on how to defend him."

Tuchel said midfielder N'Golo Kante has recovered from a foot injury but Christian Pulisic (ankle) is not in the squad.

Chelsea not at top level but still tough to beat, says Thomas Tuchel

If justification were needed for Chelsea`s decision to spend 97 million pounds to bring Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge, the Belgian provided it with a master striker`s goal on Tuesday.

In their first game in the competition since winning the Champions League against Manchester City in May, Chelsea were being frustrated by a well-drilled Zenit St Petersburg.

With little over 20 minutes remaining Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta delivered a peach of a cross towards Lukaku and the Belgian speared his header past keeper Stanislav Kritsyuk.

It was Lukaku`s fourth Chelsea goal since joining from Inter Milan and offered further evidence that he could be the key part of manager Thomas Tuchel`s jigsaw this season.

"It was an excellent header, a well-timed cross by Azpilicueta," said German Tuchel, who has transformed Chelsea since replacing Frank Lampard in January.

"That`s why he is here. He likes to score and he`s decisive for us."

Tuchel can often be an animated figure on the touchline but he was calm throughout Chelsea`s opening Group H clash even when his side were struggling to open up the resolute Russians.

Chelsea did not have a shot on target in the first half but picked up the pace after the break.

"It was not frustrating. It was tough against very strong opponents. We had to work really hard. I felt a huge intensity from us which we brought to the game," Tuchel said.

"We struggled a bit to create chances and shots in the first half. In the second half it was a bit easier to find spaces and shoot. It was a deserved win. Hard earned. It took us a while to make them tired but I liked what I saw."

While it was not a dazzling display by Tuchel`s side, it was a 23rd clean sheet since he took charge -- more than any other team in Europe`s top five leagues in the same period.

And it showed that when they are not firing on all cylinders they can grind out wins -- especially with a poacher like Lukaku offering an old-fashioned route to goal.

"The performance from Romelu was not easy. We didn`t create many chances for him, we did not create many deliveries. But he`s the type of guy who doesn`t lose confidence and belief. And that is why he is here and makes him a world-class striker," he said.

"It`s not the only talent he brings, he brings belief and he takes the pressure off the shoulders of other guys around him."

UCL: That's why he's here, says Tuchel, as Lukaku earns Chelsea win

Two goals from returning hero Cristiano Ronaldo sent Manchester United joint top of the Premier League after early season pace-setters Tottenham Hotspur fell to a surprise 3-0 loss at Crystal Palace.

Champions Manchester City made it three wins out of four with a 1-0 win at Leicester City while Arsenal got their first victory of the campaign, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on target in a 1-0 win over Norwich City.

Manchester United and Chelsea lead on 10 points with an identical goal difference after four games with Manchester City a point behind along with Brighton &amp; Hove Albion, who won 1-0 at promoted Brentford, and Spurs.

Chelsea beat Aston Villa 3-0 in the late game to register their 600th victory in the Premier League.

Romelu Lukaku and Mateo Kovacic finally opened their accounts at Stamford Bridge, with the Belgian striker scoring twice, while goalkeeper Edouard Mendy denied Villa numerous times to keep his third clean sheet.

Ronaldo`s return to United from Juventus last month brought with it the promise of excitement and goals at Old Trafford and his second debut certainly lived up to the billing.

The 36-year-old fired his side ahead just before the break, pouncing to slot home from close range after Newcastle keeper Freddie Woodman was unable to hold on to a low drive from Mason Greenwood.

After Javier Manquillo brought Newcastle level following the break, Ronaldo produced a trademark strike. He burst into the box as he collected a through ball from Luke Shaw before drilling it through the legs of Woodman.

Bruno Fernandes made it 3-1 with a wonderful strike from 25 metres out and substitute Jesse Lingard completed the rout.

SPURS SEE RED

Ronaldo was not the only celebrating debutant -- Odsonne Edouard scored twice on his debut for Palace as 10-man Tottenham Hotspur fell to a 3-0 loss at Selhurst Park.

Spurs centre back Japhet Tanganga was shown a second yellow card in the 58th minute for a foul on Jordan Ayew, five minutes after the defender was adjudged to have illegally blocked winger Wilfried Zaha.

Matters got worse for the visitors as Palace were awarded a penalty when Ben Davies handled from a Conor Gallagher cross in the 75th minute, and Zaha dispatched the spot-kick past Hugo Lloris.

Palace scored again six minutes from time through Edouard, who slotted home from Zaha`s cross 27 seconds after coming on, and the Frenchman completed his dream debut in stoppage time following a slick team move.

Another Portugal international, Bernardo Silva, scored the only goal for Pep Guardiola`s City at Leicester.

City striker Ferran Torres had a number of good chances in the first half but Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel was alert.

Jamie Vardy had a goal ruled out for offside four minutes into the second half but it was Manchester City who finally broke the deadlock as Silva pounced on a loose ball in the box to fire home in the 62nd minute.

Leicester piled forward looking for an equaliser and Kelechi Iheanacho and Ademola Lookman both went close, but Brazilian keeper Ederson was quick off his line twice.

BRIGHTON UP TO FOURTH

Brighton`s excellent start to the campaign continued with their third victory in four league games.

Leandro Trossard`s curler from the edge of the penalty area in the 90th minute secured the three points from Graham Potter`s side who are now fourth in the standings.

Arsenal moved off the bottom of the Premier League standings and scored their first goal of the campaign after captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang`s scrambled 66th-minute effort gave them a 1-0 home win over Norwich.

Mikel Arteta`s side produced an improved performance after their opening three defeats but were made to work hard by a rugged Norwich side before Aubameyang, who missed two first-half chances, broke the deadlock.

The Gabonese striker fired wide in the 10th minute and was denied in the 20th by a superb save from visiting goalkeeper Tim Krul before Takehiro Tomiyasu volleyed over the bar for the dominant hosts on the stroke of halftime.

Pepe twice hit the post within a few seconds from a flowing move and the second rebound fell kindly to Aubameyang, who was perfectly positioned to tuck the ball into an empty net.

Premier League: Ronaldo takes United joint top with Chelsea, City win and Spurs slump

Chelsea striker Sam Kerr has said she will look to return to Australia at the first opportunity as she struggles with homesickness amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Kerr has been in stellar form in the Women's Super League since making her debut for the London club in January 2020, helping Chelsea to back-to-back titles and finishing as the league's top scorer last season.

But while Kerr has flourished on the field, restrictions put in place due to the pandemic severely limiting travel to and from Australia have left her feeling increasingly isolated.

"Being away from home is the biggest struggle I am having at the moment," Kerr told News Corp.

"My coach Emma (Hayes) knows that...the problem for me and a lot of the Aussie girls is we just don't know the next time we will see our families.

"I've said to Emma that when the border opens, I am on the first flight home."

Australia has imposed some of the tightest restrictions in the world, with the number of arrivals into the country limited and those who are granted approval to travel are required to undergo compulsory hotel quarantine for 14 days.

Chelsea's Sam Kerr keen to return to Australia once restrictions lifted

Women's Super League players are being treated like "second-class citizens" due to the absence of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system and goal line technology, Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said.

Champions Chelsea lost 3-2 to Arsenal on Saturday at the Emirates Stadium as the new season of the women's league -- which now has a major new broadcast deal https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/with-new-tv-deal-brands-see-value-womens-league-deals-2021-09-03 -- got underway.

Hayes said there were plenty of positives for the league, especially with over 8,000 fans in attendance, but was less pleased about the lack of technology to help officials after Arsenal striker Bethany Mead looked offside before she scored the winner.

"The negative is that by putting our product in such a brilliant place, everyone is asking why we don't have goal line technology or why we don't have VAR," Hayes told reporters.

"I heard that there was a conversation around it not being a priority because it's really expensive, but I think we're selling our game short.

These chants come a week after the Reds fans chanted 'Chelsea rent boy' at Billy Gilmour, who is on loan at Norwich from the Blues during Liverpool's 3-0 win at Carrow Road on August 14.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp condemned the offensive chants and said that such homophobic chants have no place in football.&nbsp;

However, the chants made their return during the Saturday clash. The club (Liverpool) released a statement condemning the abusive chants.&nbsp;

"Liverpool FC is disappointed by reports that a small section of our supporters were heard singing offensive songs during Saturday's fixture with Chelsea at Anfield," the statement read.&nbsp;

"The club strongly condemns these actions and will be investigating all reported allegations of abusive and/or discriminatory behaviour with the relevant authorities to identify perpetrators.

"LFC is committed to tackling abusive and discriminatory behaviour, which has no place in football or society.

"As part of its Red Together campaign, which encompasses all the club's work on equality, diversity and inclusion, LFC strives to be the forefront of the fight against all forms of discrimination both online and in-stadium to create an inclusive environment for all.

"The club would like to remind its fans of its code of conduct, which clearly outlines what it expects from all supporters visiting Anfield."

Liverpool condemn fans singing homophobic chants against Chelsea during Premier League clash

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel praised his 10-man team for their second-half rearguard action in securing a 1-1 draw at Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday.

Chelsea had led 1-0 before Reece James was sent off for handling on the line and Liverpool`s Mohamed Salah equalised from the resulting penalty on the stroke of halftime.

An injury to French international midfielder N`Golo Kante added to Tuchel`s problems at the interval but the German tactician made a double switch during the break which helped his side cope with the pressure from Juergen Klopp`s side.

Until the penalty incident, Chelsea had played with verve and creativity after taking the lead through Kai Havertz.

"Fantastic, I saw a strong first half, a strong Liverpool side. We were very, very good, scored the first goal, had a big chance for the second goal with Mason Mount," said Tuchel.

"But the pressure was high, the quality from Liverpool, the energy was high. At some point you have to suffer, this is what we did and then in the last second (before halftime) we concede a penalty and a red card," he added.

"At halftime we have to substitute Kante due to injury. Suddenly the world is upside down," he added.

But with Thiago Silva added to the defence, Chelsea handled everything Liverpool threw at them.

"I cannot praise the team enough. I do not know if there is a harder stadium than City and Anfield to go one man down.

"Because of Liverpool`s quality and energy, for the first 10 minutes (after the break) it felt like it was never going to end

"Then, the next half an hour it was like maybe we will create a chance and score one and make it harder for them.

"For the last five minutes hopefully we survive and take a well-deserved point. Our resilience and team-work was absolutely fantastic.

"With pure will, we took the heat out of the game. That was team effort at its very best," he added.

Tuchel said James had been unlucky to be penalised and sent off and the chelsea coach was disappointed that the referee appeared to make the decision from a still image.

"I don`t know what happens and what doesn`t happen anymore. I was worried the referee looked at one photo and decided it was a red card," he said.

"I would have liked a longer check. I can remember referees that explained if it is a deflection and it is not a very unnatural arm position it is not a penalty."

Thomas Tuchel hails Chelsea after 'world turned upside down' by red card

Kurt Zouma`s seven-and-a-half-year Chelsea career came to an end after the defender on Saturday completed a permanent move to West Ham United.

Zouma leaves Stamford Bridge having made 151 appearances for the Blues and scored 10 goals. His last game was Chelsea`s UEFA Super Cup success, one of five trophies he won during his time in west London having arrived from Saint-Etienne in 2014.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: "Kurt Zouma joined us as a young player and has been a part of so many important moments for this club over the past seven-and-a-half years. He showed incredible strength of character to return from a very serious injury in 2016, and he has always been an extremely popular character in the dressing room. We thank him for his contribution on and off the pitch for Chelsea, and wish him the very best in the next stage of his career."

Zouma signed for Chelsea in January 2014, staying at Saint-Etienne on loan for the second half of that campaign. He joined his new teammates in the summer, and the then 19-year-old`s competitive Chelsea debut was a memorable one as he opened the scoring in a 2-1 League Cup win over Bolton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge in September 2014.

"I`m very happy and very proud," Zouma told West Ham`s official website. "My conversation with the manager went very fast. I just felt like he really wanted me to come and join the team, especially a good team that`s started the season very, very well."

Zouma is West Ham`s fifth summer signing and will hope to make his West Ham debut when they travel to Southampton on September 11.&nbsp;

Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku said his goal in Sunday's 2-0 win over London rivals Arsenal, the Belgium international's first match back with the European champions, was his favourite of the 114 he has scored in the Premier League.

An almost unstoppable Lukaku needed only 15 minutes to get off the mark for Chelsea following his reported 97.5 million pound ($133.08 million) transfer https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-soccer-england-che-lukaku-idUKKBN2FD1V2 from Inter Milan, tapping in a cross played into his path by Reece James, who bagged the second goal.

The goal was Lukaku's first for Chelsea, with the 28-year-old having failed to find the net during his first period at the club that ended seven years ago.

"That was the best one for me, the best of the lot," said Lukaku. "You know how emotional it was for me. Obviously it was a tap-in, but the build-up was nice.

"We played really well, we dominated. We could have scored more, but coming here with this performance is good. We have to continue like that."

Lukaku, whose 24 league goals helped Inter win their first Serie A title in 11 years last season, said he still had room for improvement at Chelsea.

"You want to work hard for the team, you want to win and score and create chances," he said. "It's something I have learned and worked on really hard and keep working on it."

Chelsea, who are table toppers after the second round of fixtures, visit second-placed Liverpool on Saturday.

'The best one': Chelsea's Romelu Lukaku relishes goal on Premier League return

Christian Pulisic will miss Chelsea's Premier League trip to Arsenal after testing positive for the coronavirus, Blues manager Thomas Tuchel said Friday.

The United States forward missed Chelsea's open training session on Wednesday, and is not available for Sunday's game at the Emirates Stadium as he self-isolates.

But Hakim Ziyech and N'Golo Kante are both back in training, and could yet prove their fitness in time to feature in the clash between the London clubs.

"Christian's absence is unfortunately pretty easy to explain, he had a positive test, and needs to follow the protocols," said Tuchel.

"So he was not in training and is not available for the game."

Ziyech suffered a shoulder injury in Chelsea's penalty shoot-out European Super Cup win over Villarreal, while Kante has been sidelined with an ankle problem.

"Hakim and N'Golo were both in training today (Friday), and did everything to be in training today and had absolutely no problems," Tuchel said. "But they need another more physical, intense training session tomorrow with the team.

"We can decide after that, but right now it seems very positive that both can be in the squad for Sunday."

Chelsea's Christian Pulisic out of Arsenal match after positive COVID-19 test

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is confident that new signing Romelu Lukaku can have a big impact and be the "missing piece" for the club as they chase their first Premier League title in five years, he told reporters on Friday.

Lukaku rejoined Chelsea from Inter Milan last week for a club record fee reportedly worth 97.5 million pounds ($132.62 million).

"We expect him to have an impact... we expect goals... he is a big personality in the dressing room but I am absolutely convinced he will have a positive impact on Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic. Is Romelu the missing piece? We hope so..." said Tuchel.

The German added that the Belgium international is in line to feature against Arsenal on Sunday.

"We have one more training to go but the week was a heavy load for (Lukaku) because he was in the group with the other late starters... we are hoping he is on the pitch for Sunday and things look like it," he said.

Meanwhile, Tuchel confirmed that Pulisic missed training this week due to a positive COVID-19 test and will not be involved on Sunday.

The Chelsea boss, however, sounded optimistic about the availability of Hakim Ziyech and N'Golo Kante, saying that the duo had absolutely no problems in training and "a more physical session" on Saturday will determine their participation against Arsenal.

Speaking about their opponents, who have had four positive COVID-19 cases of their own, Tuchel said he was unsure what the Arsenal team would look like.

"It's a difficult one to predict. They can play maybe the underdog role here because of the complications they've had... it's on us to be absolutely focused. There is a lot of quality in their squad and they can hurt anybody."

'Difficult to comprehend...': Chelsea's Kai Havertz to auction specially-designed boots for Germany flood relief

Chelsea are widely tipped as the team most likely to challenge champions Manchester City for this season's Premier League title, but manager Thomas Tuchel has ruled the London club out of the race, saying they first need to close in on top-ranked rivals.

European champions Chelsea, who added the Super Cup&nbsp;to their collection this week, got their Premier League campaign off to a flying start with a 3-0 home win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, even without new signing Romelu Lukaku.

Tuchel, who took over Chelsea midway through last season and led them to a top-four finish, said his team are "fourth favorites" to win the league and must hunt down Manchester City, Manchester United, and Liverpool - last season's top three teams.

"To be totally honest, I see us as the number four, that cannot be the favorite in the next year," he told reporters after Saturday's game.

"This is the Premier League, a tough competition. It's on us, we are in this role, and in the role of the hunters, we have to close the gap to Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United.

"This was a very good first step, but that's the reality and we are not shy to say this out loud that we try to be the best in any competition we play, but the reality is we come from fourth place and have three teams to close the gap to."

Chelsea next travels to north London to play Arsenal on Aug. 22.

Chelsea are widely tipped as the team most likely to challenge champions Manchester City for this season's Premier League title, but manager Thomas Tuchel has ruled the London club out of the race, saying they first need to close in on top-ranked rivals.

Football: Chelsea not Premier League title favourites, says manager Thomas Tuchel

Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool all served notice of their title intentions with crushing wins as the Premier League enjoyed a return to its familiar format on Saturday.

With full-capacity crowds back for the first time since March 2020, Manchester United got things going in the early kickoff with a 5-1 hammering of Leeds United as Bruno Fernandes netted a hat-trick and Paul Pogba making four assists.

Chelsea then outclassed Crystal Palace 3-0 at Stamford Bridge in one of five 3pm kickoffs before Liverpool, with key defender Virgil van Dijk back after a nine-month absence, eased to a 3-0 win at promoted Norwich City.

European champions Chelsea treated a large Stamford Bridge crowd to a dazzling display, with goals from Marcos Alonso, Christian Pulisic and academy graduate Trevoh Chalobah making it a forgettable day for Palace's new manager Patrick Vieira.

Chelsea are earmarked as the side most likely to challenge champions Manchester City for the title and they did nothing to suggest otherwise as they made do without new signing Romelu Lukaku who is still observing quarantine restrictions after his 97.5-million-pound ($135 million) move from Inter Milan.

Spanish left back Alonso fizzed a free kick into the top corner to put Chelsea in charge in the 27th minute while U.S. forward Christian Pulisic followed up on the rebound to double their lead five minutes before halftime.

Leicester City began with a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers with the ever reliable Jamie Vardy on target while Watford marked their return to the top flight with an impressive 3-2 win over Aston Villa as Emmanuel Dennis and Cucho Hernandez both scored on their debuts.

Brighton and Hove Albion won 2-1 at Burnley.

Football: Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool off to flying starts

Romelu&nbsp;Lukaku&nbsp;returned to Chelsea on Thursday for a reported club record fee of £97 million ($135 million) from Inter Milan, seven years after his first spell at Stamford Bridge came to an end.

The Belgian striker was instrumental in securing Inter's first Serie A title for 11 years last season, but the Italian giants financial problems forced them into selling their prized asset to the Premier League side.

"I'm happy and blessed to be back at this wonderful club," said&nbsp;Lukaku, who has signed a five-year contract. "It’s been a long journey for me: I came here as a kid who had a lot to learn, now I'm coming back with a lot of experience and more mature.

"The way the club is going fits my ambitions perfectly at 28 and just coming off winning Serie A. I think this opportunity comes at the right time and hopefully we can have a lot of success together."

Lukaku&nbsp;scored 64 goals in two seasons in Italy to quickly become a hero at the San Siro.

But the 28-year-old also has a proven record in the Premier League, scoring 113 goals during spells with Manchester United, Everton and West Brom.

The only blot on&nbsp;Lukaku's career so far was his first spell at Chelsea as he failed to score in 15 appearances.

Signed as an 18-year-old as the apparent heir to Didier Drogba,&nbsp;Lukaku&nbsp;quickly grew frustrated at his lack of opportunities in the first team.

Drogba was the hero as&nbsp;Lukaku's first season as a Chelsea player ended with them winning the Champions League for the first time in the club's history.

But he later stated he felt he played "no part" in that success due to his limited game time.

Prolific loan spells with West Brom and then Everton proved&nbsp;Lukaku's ability to score goals in the Premier League before he made a permanent move to the Toffees in 2014.

After scoring 87 goals in three seasons with Everton, Chelsea came calling again but&nbsp;Lukaku&nbsp;instead joined Manchester United in an inital £75 million move.

'Ups and downs'

Seven goals in his first seven Premier League games briefly gave United hope of challenging Manchester City for the title in 2017/18, but the wheels quickly came off Jose Mourinho's time at Old Trafford.

Lukaku&nbsp;scored twice in United's famous comeback to beat Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League in the early months of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign in charge, but he also fell out of favour under the Norwegian with questions over his fitness.

"Since I left Chelsea, it's been a long journey with a lot of ups and downs, but these experiences made me strong and the challenge is to try to help the team win some more trophies," added&nbsp;Lukaku. "I can't wait to get started and to help the club achieve more success."

A move to Inter offered a fresh start under Antonio Conte, who had been a long-time admirer of Belgium's all-time leading scorer.

Together they ended Juventus' grip on Italian football, romping to Serie A last season by 12 points.

However, the financial problems of Inter's owners the Suning Group, exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic, have seen their rise quickly unravel.

Conte left the club in May, claiming the cost cutting required would have prevented him building the team he wanted to challenge domestically and in Europe.

After lifting the Champions League last season, Chelsea are hoping&nbsp;Lukaku&nbsp;is the final piece required to make Thomas Tuchel's side Premier League title challengers.

"Lukaku&nbsp;is quite simply one of the world’s best strikers and goalscorers," said Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia. "We are absolutely delighted to be bringing him back to the club he loves, and are excited to be adding his talent to our Champions League-winning squad.

"We are of course looking to build on last season’s success, and&nbsp;Lukaku&nbsp;will play a big role in achieving our targets."

Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga came off the bench to make two shootout saves as Champions League winners Chelsea beat Spain's Villarreal 6-5 on penalties to add the UEFA Super Cup to their trophy collection on Wednesday.

Extra time had ended 1-1 at Belfast's Windsor Park Stadium, with Chelsea bringing on Kepa for Edouard Mendy in the final seconds in what turned out to be the game's tactical master-stroke.

The freshest player on a field of tired legs saved first from Aissa Mandi at 1-1, after Kai Havertz had missed for Chelsea, and then made the winning stop at 6-5 when Villarreal captain and 2010 World Cup winner Raul Albiol hit the ball to the bottom left.

Mendy was one of the first to congratulate his teammate, with Chelsea lifting the trophy for a second time.

"It was certainly not spontaneous," Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said of the goalkeeper switch.

"We had some statistics, we were well-prepared. Kepa is the best percentage in saving penalties. The analyzing guys, the goalkeeper coaches showed me the data and then we spoke with the players that this can happen.

"And since then they know and it's fantastic how Edu accepts it," added the German. "Kepa is better in this discipline and these guys are true team players."

Mendy said he had no hard feelings at all. "Of course I'm happy because we won," the Senegal international told BT Sport television.

Hakim Ziyech had put Chelsea ahead in the 27th minute, sweeping in from 12 yards after a perfectly measured cross from Kai Havertz on the left.

The Morocco international, an unused substitute when Chelsea beat Manchester City 1-0 in the Champions League final in Porto on May 29, then went off injured four minutes before the break following a collision with Juan Foyth.

Ziyech returned with his right arm in a sling to watch the rest of the match from the bench while Christian Pulisic took his place.

Villarreal, the Europa League holders with a noisy contingent of some 1,000 fans among the 13,000-strong crowd on a clear evening in Northern Ireland, hit the woodwork either side of halftime.

Their equalizer came as no surprise in a lively match with several scoring chances squandered on both sides and both keepers making key saves.

Gerard Moreno -- who scored against Manchester United before the Europa League final in Gdansk went to penalties -- rescued Unai Emery's side in the 73rd with a side-foot finish after a back-heel from Boulaye Dia.

It was Moreno's eighth goal in his last nine European appearances for Villarreal.

"It was tough, 120 minutes," said Tuchel. "We were very strong in the first 30-35 minutes and then we lost a bit easy balls after our goal... the equalizer was well-deserved.

"Right after we conceded the goal we were very strong again, right until the end."

Pulisic had a good chance in the 99th, the ball just running wide, while Mason Mount had a shot pushed out for a corner in the 108th.

Chelsea now turn their thoughts to the start of the Premier League season, and the imminent signing of striker Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan, with an opening match at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said he understood striker Tammy Abraham's frustration over his lack of playing time last season and took some responsibility for it, as speculation grows over the England international's future at the Premier League club.

British media have linked Abraham with a move to Serie A club AS Roma, who are managed by former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

The 23-year-old ended last season as Chelsea's joint-top scorer with 12 goals in all competitions but found himself marginalized at the London club since Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as the manager in January.

Chelsea have also been reported to welcome back Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan, a move which would further cut short Abraham's opportunities.

"I will not comment on the actual situations - how far this is and if it's true and not true," Tuchel said before Wednesday's Super Cup match against Villarreal. "Tammy is right now in the squad.

"He was clearly not happy with the last half a year and maybe he has reason also not to be happy. Maybe it was also my fault not to push him, not to trust him on the same level I maybe trusted other players.

"I can absolutely understand that he wants more minutes. So the decision will be 'how do we plan, what are Tammy's plans, does he fight his way back into the team from the position where he ended last season, or does he want to change the club to have the chance of being a regular starter?'"

Tuchel was tight-lipped over the imminent signing of Lukaku, who is reported to return to Chelsea after seven years in a club-record 115 million euro ($134.79 million) deal.

The 23-year-old ended last season as Chelsea's joint-top scorer with 12 goals in all competitions but found himself marginalized at the London club since Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard as the manager in January. So the decision will be 'how do we plan, what are Tammy's plans, does he fight his way back into the team from the position where he ended last season, or does he want to change the club to have the chance of being a regular starter?'" Tuchel was tight-lipped over the imminent signing of Lukaku, who is reported to return to Chelsea after seven years in a club-record 115 million euro ($134.79 million) deal.

Defender Ben Chilwell said the Champions League final helped strengthen the bonds between the English players at Chelsea and Manchester City and that it will benefit the national team ahead of the upcoming European Championship.

Chilwell, Reece James and Mason Mount were part of the Chelsea team who beat City 1-0 in the final, with Kyle Walker, John Stones, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling featuring for the Premier League champions.

Chilwell said there was no awkwardness when the players met up again at the England training camp.

"If anything, and it's quite weird to say, it's actually brought us closer," the 24-year-old told British media before Sunday's Group D opener against Croatia.

"To share a Champions League final, although they were on the losing side -- it's going to be good for us, put us in good stead going into this tournament.

"It can only be a positive."

After playing Croatia, England face Scotland on June 18 and the Czech Republic four days later, with all their games at Wembley.

Chelsea could pay more than £200m ($283m) for Dortmund striker Erling Haaland and Inter Milan defender Achraf Hakimi in the upcoming transfer market.&nbsp;

If Haaland's deal with Chelsea goes through, it will not only shatter Chelsea's club record but also Premier League record in terms of player wages. However, Chelsea could decide to stall the negotiations by a year as a variable release clause based on performances is expected to see him leave for a price nearer £70 million ($99m).

The Blues are also looking to match Paris Saint Germain's bid for Inter Milan's Hakimi at £56.1 million ($79m). However, the Italian club has valued the full-back at £68.8m (€80m/$96m). According to his agent, Alejandro Camano, there are no negotiations with OSG currently.&nbsp;

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has been added to Spain's training squad as they prepare for any potential fall-out from captain Sergio Busquets's positive COVID-19 test ahead of the European Championship.

After Busquets tested positive, the remaining 23 players went into isolation along with the coaching staff, meaning an Under-21 side led by coach age-group Luis de la Fuente will face Lithuania on Tuesday in what was supposed to be the nation's final warm-up game before the Euros.

On Monday, Spain boss Luis Enrique called up Rodrigo Moreno (Leeds), Carlos Soler (Valencia), Brais Mendez (Celta Vigo), Pablo Fornals (West Ham) and Raul Albiol as potential cover should there be an outbreak.

Arrizabalaga and the five others will train in what Spain are calling a "parallel bubble" away from the main Euros squad with a view to them being added should the need occur.

The Spanish FA also confirmed on Monday that all the players and staff who are currently isolating tested negative, but will continue to train alone ahead of next Monday's Group E opener against Sweden in Seville.

Football: Chelsea would be getting rid of seven players this summer - Reports

Chelsea have extended Thomas Tuchel's contract until 2024 after the German manager won the Champions League this season, the London club said on Friday.

Tuchel took over midway through the 2020-21 season after the Premier League club sacked Frank Lampard and the German-led them to a top-four finish as well as the FA Cup final.

His side clinched the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Manchester City in Porto.

"I cannot imagine a better occasion for a contract renewal. I am grateful for the experience and very happy to stay part of the Chelsea family," Tuchel said.

"There is far more to come and we are looking forward to our next steps with ambition and much anticipation."

Tuchel arrived at Stamford Bridge in January on an initial 18-month deal with the possibility of an extension, which was granted six days after he led Chelsea to Champions League glory.

Chelsea have lost just five of the 47-year-old's 30 games in charge, including the 1-0 FA Cup final defeat by Leicester City last month, and conceded only 16 goals in all competitions.

"Thomas... slotted in seamlessly and immediately became an integral part of the Chelsea family," club director Marina Granovskaia said.

"Returning us to the top four in the Premier League was crucial and we could not be happier with our success in the Champions League which crowned a remarkable season at Chelsea."

Football: Chelsea extend Tuchel's contract to 2024 after Champions League win

Five months after being sacked by Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel lifted the Champions League as he got the better of Pep Guardiola once more to keep Manchester City waiting for European glory.

A 1-0 victory in Porto rounded off a rollercoaster year for the German, who was handed the chance to revive Chelsea's fortunes less than a month after losing his job in Paris.

Chelsea were ninth in the Premier League table at the time with owner Roman Abramovich seeing little return on his £220 million ($312 million) outlay on new players under Frank Lampard.

In fact, Tuchel had never met the Russian billionaire in person until they crossed paths on the pitch at the Estadio do Dragao as the wild celebrations went on around them.

"Maybe I have a new contract now with that win," said Tuchel, who was only handed an 18-month deal when he signed on at Stamford Bridge.

"I spoke to Roman just now and it was the best moment for the first meeting, or maybe the worst moment. Maybe it can only get worse now!"

Kai Havertz was the most expensive purchase of that summer splurge after his £71 million move from Bayer Leverkusen.

Getting the best out of Havertz was one of Tuchel's major tasks and the 21-year-old German came good on the biggest stage of all with the only goal three minutes before half-time.

Unlike Guardiola, Tuchel did not have a glittering playing career. A series of knee injuries forced him to retire at 25 and take up a job as a waiter, while he began his coaching career in the youth ranks of Stuttgart.

From afar he watched and was inspired as Guardiola won 14 trophies in four years at Barcelona before joining him in Germany where they battled for Bundesliga supremacy in charge of Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

During their first meeting, the two football obsessives talked long into the night using glasses and salt and pepper shakers to mimic formations.

"I was such a huge admirer of Pep when he was a player and then when he became a coach it was like learning on the job for me," Tuchel said this week.

"I was an academy coach and then in the Bundesliga with Mainz, but I don't think I missed a game because there was so much to learn."

Tuchel did not win any of the first five clashes between the pair during his time at Mainz and Dortmund against Guardiola's dominant Bayern side.

But the pupil has now outfoxed the master three times in the past six weeks as Chelsea completed a treble of victories over the English champions after wins in the FA Cup semi-final and Premier League.

<h2>- Tactical battle -</h2>

Guardiola spoke glowingly ahead of the game on how Tuchel's switch to a 3-4-3 formation had transformed Chelsea's season and denied City's abundance of creative midfielders space between the lines in their two previous meetings.

That allowed Tuchel to arguably win the tactical battle before a ball had even been kicked.

Often accused of overly tinkering with his line-ups when the pressure is ramped up in the final stages of the Champions League, Guardiola's bold call to start without a recognised holding midfielder backfired.

Tuchel was dismissed by PSG despite leading the French giants to their own first Champions League final in August.

That time he had to suffer the pain of a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, but his desire not to leave Portugal empty-handed again was in evidence as he prowled the touchline, constantly cajoling his players and whipping up the Chelsea fans into a frenzy.

The travelling support from London were among a 14,000 crowd that contributed hugely to the spectacle after almost a full season of European football behind closed doors.

Chelsea fans showed they have not forgotten the club's all-time record goalscorer with cries of "super Frank" in honour of Lampard's part in getting the Blues into the top four last season to qualify for this competition, and then through the group stages before his dismissal.

But this was Tuchel's triumph and he wants more.

"Nobody wants to rest, I want the next one, the next title," he added. "I want to be a part of it and I demand to be a part of it."

Football: Pupil beats the master as Chelsea's Tuchel gets the better of Guardiola

Chelsea fans piled into the streets surrounding the Stamford Bridge ground of the new kings of European football following their 1-0 defeat of Manchester City in the Champions League final on Saturday in Portugal.

Some lit flares as they sang and cheered the club's triumph earned thanks to Kai Havertz's first-half goal in Porto.

The goal from the club's most expensive ever signing gave the Russian-owned club their second European crown nine years after the first in 2012.

Coronavirus restrictions meant far fewer Chelsea supporters were able to attend Saturday's clash compared to the night they beat Bayern Munich.

Many of those who could not be there congregated in the fashionable west London neighbourhood, near the stadium where the same supporters had gathered for an angry protest against Chelsea's shortlived membership of the European Super League in April.

A light show in the club's blue spelled out "Champions for the Fans" as fireworks went off in the distance.

The fans' joyous celebrations, standing shoulder to shoulder in the streets, showed a complete disregard for the present social distancing advice in England that groups of no more than 30 can congregate. &nbsp;

Some climbed up to balconies of houses raising their arms in triumph -- several whipping off their shirts to celebrate half naked on a warm night.

Other Chelsea fans watching the game on giant screens at the Boxpark entertainment complex in Croydon, south of London, erupted in cheers at the final whistle.

"I'm ecstatic. It's amazing, this is something I've felt before, a long time ago, but to re-live it is mad. I'm really happy, I can't believe it," said landscape gardener Aaron Cheneoy, 36.

"Why do we think we've won it? Because we're the best team in Europe! I mean, look what's happened this season, this is the third time we've beaten City," said Bradley Smith, a 25-year-old consultant.

In northwest England, many Manchester City fans congregated in the Townley Pub in the city and experienced a wave of emotions as their team fell short of becoming European champions for the first time.

They drowned their sorrows but with the consolation that Pep Guardiola's team ended the season as runaway Premier League champions and retained the League Cup.

The City fans' emotions went from despair when Havertz scored to anger and despair at the early departure of influential midfielder Kevin De Bruyne after a shuddering clash with Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

At the final whistle, the sky blue-clad fans began chanting defiantly.

Kai's the limit as Chelsea fans revel in Champions League glory

Football: Chelsea fans in Porto overjoyed after club crowned as European champions!

Chelsea&nbsp;won their second Champions League title and denied Pep Guardiola's Manchester City their first after Kai Havertz grabbed a first-half goal to secure a 1-0 win in Saturday's all-English final at the Estadio Do Dragao.

The German youngster,&nbsp;Chelsea's record signing, kept his composure as he raced through and evaded goalkeeper Ederson before rolling the ball into an empty net in the 42nd minute to decide a tight encounter played in front of a 16,500 crowd.

Premier League champions City were favourites ahead of the final but suffered a desperately disappointing night in their first Champions League showpiece match.

Despite winning three of the last four Premier League titles for City, Spaniard Guardiola failed to deliver the coveted European trophy he last won with Barcelona in 2011.

For&nbsp;Chelsea's German manager Thomas Tuchel the triumph comes after his Paris St Germain side suffered defeat in last season's final against Bayern Munich and just four months after he took over from Frank Lampard at the west London club.

"To share it with everybody is incredible. We made it. Wow. I don't know what to feel," said Tuchel. "I was so grateful to arrive a second time (in the final). I felt different.

"The (players) were determined to win this. We wanted to be a stone in their (City's) shoe. We encouraged everybody to step up and step out, to be more brave," he said.

CITY EXPOSED

While Tuchel got his approach spot on, Guardiola’s team selection was surprising with Raheem Sterling brought in on the left, neither regular holding midfielder, Fernandinho or Rodri, picked and Ilkay Gundogan left to protect the back line.

It quickly became apparent the move had left City’s defence exposed with&nbsp;Chelsea&nbsp;creating early chances, three of which fell to German Timo Werner who failed to capitalise - miskicking one, shooting softly at Ederson and then finding the side-netting.

Gundogan’s already difficult task got harder when he was booked for a foul on Mason Mount in the 34th minute.

Chelsea&nbsp;also suffered a setback when their experienced Brazilian centre-back Thiago Silva went down awkwardly after a header and had to limp off six minutes before the break, being replaced by Andreas Christensen.

However, three minutes later&nbsp;Chelsea&nbsp;struck. Midfielder Mount split the City defence with a superb through ball and Ederson rushed out of his goal but was unable to stop Havertz from skipping past him and slotting into the unguarded net.

City’s night got worse when key midfielder Kevin De Bruyne had to go off with a concussion injury after an accidental clash with Antonio Rudiger left him on the ground, with Guardiola throwing on Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus in his place.

Christian Pulisic came on for&nbsp;Chelsea&nbsp;to become the first American to play in a Champions League final and almost the first to score when he was slipped in by Havertz but then drifted his shot just wide of the post.

HOPEFUL EFFORT

City gradually began to get the upper hand but their usual composure was lacking and it was not until deep into stoppage time that they went close with a hopeful effort from Riyad Mahrez that clipped the bar.

Chelsea won their second Champions League title and denied Pep Guardiola's Manchester City their first after Kai Havertz grabbed a first-half goal to secure a 1-0 win in Saturday's all-English final at the Estadio Do Dragao. The German youngster, Chelsea's record signing, kept his composure as he raced through and evaded goalkeeper Ederson before rolling the ball into an empty net in the 42nd minute to decide a tight encounter played in front of a 16,500 crowd. For Chelsea's German manager Thomas Tuchel the triumph comes after his Paris St Germain side suffered defeat in last season's final against Bayern Munich and just four months after he took over from Frank Lampard at the west London club. CITY EXPOSED While Tuchel got his approach spot on, Guardiola’s team selection was surprising with Raheem Sterling brought in on the left, neither regular holding midfielder, Fernandinho or Rodri, picked and Ilkay Gundogan left to protect the back line. It quickly became apparent the move had left City’s defence exposed with Chelsea creating early chances, three of which fell to German Timo Werner who failed to capitalise - miskicking one, shooting softly at Ederson and then finding the side-netting. Gundogan’s already difficult task got harder when he was booked for a foul on Mason Mount in the 34th minute. Chelsea also suffered a setback when their experienced Brazilian centre-back Thiago Silva went down awkwardly after a header and had to limp off six minutes before the break, being replaced by Andreas Christensen. However, three minutes later Chelsea struck. Christian Pulisic came on for Chelsea to become the first American to play in a Champions League final and almost the first to score when he was slipped in by Havertz but then drifted his shot just wide of the post. HOPEFUL EFFORT City gradually began to get the upper hand but their usual composure was lacking and it was not until deep into stoppage time that they went close with a hopeful effort from Riyad Mahrez that clipped the bar. The final whistle set off wild celebrations for the Chelsea fans who had flown in for the game, while dejected City supporters headed off for the flights back to Manchester. "Decisions are always to try to win the game," said Guardiola, when asked to reflect on his team selection. "The way we played the game in the second half, they had one counter attack with Pulisic. They’re a really good team, but we competed perfectly against them. In the second half we deserved to score one goal but we couldn’t do it." "I would like to say it was an exceptional season for us. Football: Chelsea win Champions League as Havertz goal tames Man City

While Manchester City had been building towards what they thought was their moment in the Champions League for five years under Pep Guardiola, Chelsea showed with their victory in Saturday's final in Porto what can be achieved in just four months.

That is how long has elapsed since Thomas Tuchel became coach, replacing Frank Lampard with Chelsea ninth in the Premier League.

The German oversaw an immediate transformation in their fortunes, dragging them into the top four, taking them to the FA Cup final which they lost to Leicester City, and now winning the Champions League.

They have beaten Guardiola's City for the third time in six weeks thanks to Kai Havertz's goal, and they are champions of Europe for the second time.

Tuchel is set to reap the rewards with a handsome new contract, although whether he will be allowed to put down roots in west London remains to be seen given how managerial cycles tend to go at Stamford Bridge.&nbsp;

Once again a mid-season managerial sacking has worked out perfectly for Chelsea, whose 2012 Champions League triumph came following the decision to sack Andre Villas-Boas and appoint Roberto Di Matteo.

This time Chelsea have struck gold with Tuchel, but the 47-year-old would not have been able to deliver such success without the huge investment in players that came before his arrival, as well as some of the outstanding young talents who were already thriving under Lampard.

<h2>- Room for improvement -</h2>

Five of Chelsea's line-up at the Estadio do Dragao were signed at the start of the season, including match-winner Havertz, the 71 million-pound ($100m) recruit from Bayer Leverkusen. There was also Reece James and Mason Mount, youth academy graduates who are in England's squad for Euro 2020.

This is a team that has already conquered Europe but that appears to be just at the start of its adventure together.

"We have a strong bond, a strong group who can really defend and play and have answers on all questions in the game," Tuchel said on Saturday.

"Once the celebrations are over and once we digest this experience, it is the moment to grow, to evolve, to learn from it and become better."

There is huge room for improvement in the Premier League after Chelsea finished 19 points behind champions City, and a proper domestic title challenge will be expected now.

"When you play for a club like Chelsea you are always thinking in the future," said veteran skipper Cesar Azpilicueta.

Tuchel knows full well that past success counts for little -- Di Matteo was gone within six months of that 2012 victory and Tuchel himself was sacked by Paris Saint-Germain last December despite leading them to their first ever final last season.

<h2>- 'I want the next one' -</h2>

"When we won the Cup in Dortmund I did not arrive at the next training with less hunger, less desire or ambition," he said.

"Of course now is the time to celebrate for some days, to enjoy and let it sink in, for one or two weeks, to talk about it and reflect on it, but then it does surprisingly not a lot to you.

"I think it's good because nobody wants to rest. I want the next one, the next title. I want to be a part of it and I demand to be a part of it and this is what comes next."

He was initially handed just an 18-month contract but has earned an extended deal after what he has achieved in such a short time.

"I am not even 100 percent sure, but maybe I already have a new contract now with that win. My manager said something about that but I didn't know so let's check this first," he told reporters with a smile.

"My desire is to go for more victories, to grow as a coach and to push the group on the first day of next season to the limit."

The next Premier League campaign starts on August 14, but Chelsea will play three days before that against Villarreal with an opportunity for another trophy in the UEFA Super Cup.
