India bowling coach Morne Morkel has flown back home due to a medical emergency, reported news agency PTI. While there is not further detail about the kind of emergency, a media report in news outlet Dainik Jagran says it is because of the demise of Morkel's father.
Morkel was with India when the team had departed for the Champions Trophy and did take part in the first practice session but missed the second one. The 40-year-old South African pacer was named the bowling coach when Gautam Gambhir took over as India's head coach after Rahul Dravid stood down following the T20 World Cup win in 2024.

Morkel leaving the side in the middle is a jolt to a bowling line-up that is already without premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah. India have Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana in the pace bowling department, with Hardik Pandya as medium-pace bowling all-rounder.
For India, Shami's form will be the key in the tournament as he will lead the attack. The pacer has made a return to international cricket in the last month only and had played his last match in November 2023&mdash;the ODI World Cup final, which India lost.
India have gone spin-heavy in the tournament, selecting five spinners in the 15-man squad. Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja are the spin all-rounders, while Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy are the specialist spinners in the squad.
<h2>India's schedule in Champions Trophy</h2>
India begin their campaign when they take on Bangladesh on Feb 20 in Dubai. The Men in Blue face archrivals Pakistan on Feb 23 and New Zealand on Mar 2 in their last group-stage match, all in Dubai.
After BCCI's refusal to send the team to Pakistan due to political tensions between the two countries, Dubai was picked as host for India's games.
The UAE city will also host the first semi-final on March 4, irrespective of India qualifying for it. Dubai will also host the final if India make it to the title game.

Champions Trophy: BCCI launches new jersey with host Pakistan's name - Look inside

The Champions Trophy begins on Wednesday with the world's top eight teams competing in Pakistan and Dubai for the prestigious title.
AFP Sport looks at three highly anticipated matches in the group phase of the 50-over tournament:
<h2>Australia v England</h2>
The Ashes rivals clash in Lahore on Saturday.
World Cup holders Australia have had the upper hand against their old foes in recent 50-over matches and won their previous series 3-2 last year.
But both come into the Champions Trophy with question marks hanging over them.

Australia are without their "Big Three" pacemen -- Pat Cummins (ankle injury), Josh Hazlewood (hip injury) and Mitchell Starc, who has opted out for personal reasons.
In the absence of all-rounders Mitchell Marsh (back injury) and Marcus Stoinis (retired), half of their regular team is missing.
The depleted side suffered a heavy 2-0 series defeat in Sri Lanka on the eve of the tournament.
England, with Test coach Brendon McCullum now in charge, did no better and were whitewashed 3-0 in India.
Since winning the 2019 World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup, England have struggled in white-ball cricket.
<h2>India v Pakistan</h2>
TV ratings rocket, with millions tuning in to watch the archrivals any time they battle it out, owing to the deep rivalry between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
The two teams meet on Sunday in Dubai.
Tickets for the clash were sold out minutes after going on sale as more than 150,000 fans queued online to grab a seat in the 25,000-capacity stadium.
India refused to visit Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, forcing the latter to agree to partially relinquish hosting rights to Dubai after a long stand-off.&nbsp;
On the pitch, India are favourites to win the tournament for a third time, in what is expected to be the international swansong for Rohit Sharma.
Pakistan are the holders and unpredictable.
<h2>Afghanistan v England</h2>
More than 160 British politicians called for England to boycott the match in Lahore on February 26 over the erosion of women's rights by Taliban authorities in Afghanistan.
Skipper Jos Buttler rejected the idea, saying, "I don't think a boycott is the way to go about it."
Barring a shock last-minute about-face, the game will go ahead.
After being well beaten in India last week, Buttler insisted that England can be "dangerous" at the Champions Trophy, even if recent evidence suggests otherwise.
Afghanistan have become a rising force in white-ball cricket in recent years, rising to eighth in the ODI world rankings, one place below England.
The Afghans beat Australia on the way to a historic semi-final place at last year's T20 World Cup before losing to South Africa.

Champions Trophy: The top three blockbuster matches to watch out for in tournament

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal says that the current team, which is being selected to play the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, has many loopholes. The comments come just two days away from the opening day of the tournament when Pakistan take on New Zealand in Karachi on Feb 19.
"Our team has many loopholes. The bowling is struggling. Spinners are not there. The openers are struggling. I don't know what the selectors and the captain thought. Even our chairman gave his approval. Let's see how things unfold. The rest of the teams look much more balanced," said Kamran in a conversation with news outlet Hindustan Times.

"We could have announced a better team. I think India, New Zealand, England and South Africa will make the semi-finals. Australia is depleted because of injuries to five key players. I don't know the thought process behind picking such a Pakistan team. The chairman hasn't played that much cricket; he doesn't understand matters, perhaps, so he gave his approval for such a team. India look clear favourites; they deserve to play the final. But I can't say the same about Pakistan. If they make the semi-final, I would consider it a big achievement," Kamran further added.
Pakistan are placed in Group A along with New Zealand, Bangladesh, and arch-rivals India. After starting their campaign against New Zealand, Pakistan face India on Feb 23 in Dubai. They play their last group-stage match against Bangladesh on Feb 27 in Rawalpindi.
The hosts, meanwhile, received a boost with pacer Haris Rauf nearing match fitness two days out from the tournament start. Haris was included in the squad despite having a side strain but now has started bowling.
&ldquo;I am feeling comfortable and my body is okay now the team management will decide about my playing in the opening match,&rdquo; he said recently to the reporters, as reported by news agency PTI.

Just ahead of the Champions Trophy, host Pakistan have received a huge boost with express pacer Haris Rauf having started to bowl. Rauf was added to the Pakistan squad despite suffering from a side strain. The bowler, however, has reached the potential match fitness just in time.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I have started doing exercises a few days back and also resumed bowling since yesterday,&rdquo; Haris told reporters at the National Stadium in Karachi, as reported by news agency PTI.

Pakistan have gone for pace-first attack despite the sub-continental pitches being batting friendly. The hosts only have one specialist spinner in the squad, but Rauf isn't thinking too much about it.
&ldquo;I think we have always formed a good bowling combination with pace and spin and it will not be different in the tournament,&rdquo; the pacer said.
<h2>Colourful opening ceremony sans team captains</h2>
Pakistan is set to host an ICC event for the first time in 29 years, kicking off the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy with a grand curtain raiser at the iconic Dewan-e-Khas of Lahore Fort. Organisers illuminated Lahore Fort in spectacular fashion, offering a stunning preview of the thrilling cricket to come in the first Champions Trophy event since 2017.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chair Mohsin Naqvi expressed the nation's excitement and readiness to host this prestigious tournament, calling it a "momentous occasion" for Pakistan and its cricket-loving people.
The choice of Lahore Fort as the venue for the curtain raiser was steeped in symbolism, representing both Pakistan&rsquo;s rich cultural heritage and its deep cricketing legacy.

Champions Trophy: Pakistan receive huge boost with pacer Haris Rauf resuming bowling ahead of opening match

Former Bangladesh batter Imrul Kayes says that Jasprit Bumrah's absence in the Champions Trophy gives India's eastern neighbours a chance to capitalise. The statement comes a couple of days ahead of the start of the ICC tournament while India and Bangladesh face off each other on Feb 20 in their first group-stage match on Feb 20.
"India is a strong side with a great bowling attack and batting lineup. But Bumrah is not in the squad. We all know what he has done in the last two years for Indian cricket. His absence gives Bangladesh a chance to capitalise," said Kayes while talking to news agency PTI.

The former Bangladesh batter, however, confessed that Mohammed Shami could be a big threat for them in the match in Bumrah's absence.
"Shami's inclusion is big. He may be struggling a bit with fitness right now, but if he finds his rhythm, he will be a big threat for Bangladesh," said Kayes.

Former India pacer Laxmipathy Balaji has also said that Shami has to come good with the new ball for India to do well in the tournament. Balaji pointed out that it was Shami who was carrying India's load before Bumrah became an all-format master.
"Actually, he had out-bowled Bumrah in the 2019 (50-over World Cup) and in the last World Cup (2023). Bumrah is the champion bowler across formats. But Shami has experience and, before Bumrah's arrival, it was Shami who carried India's attack all through," said Balaji as reported by news agency PTI.
Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee has picked up five spinners in the India squad in Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. The three pacers in the team are Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana, with Hardik Pandya as the medium-pace all-rounder.

Champions Trophy 2025: Colourful opening ceremony held in Lahore sans team captains

Former India pacer Laxmipathy Balaji believes that Mohammed Shami will be very important if the team has to do well in the Champions Trophy. The statement comes as India prepare for their campaign without Jasprit Bumrah, who was ruled out due to a back injury.

"I think it's very important. If India has to do well, then Shami has to come good with the new ball. The kind of impact he can make in his first six overs with the new ball, it will play a crucial role for India."
"Old ball is anyway...it is a defensive game now. If he can make early inroads regularly, that will give a huge boost to India," he added.
<h2>India pick five spinners for Champions Trophy</h2>
The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee has picked up five spinners in the India squad&mdash;Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. The three pacers in the team are Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana with Hardik Pandya as the medium pace all-rounder.
Varun was included at the last minute in place of batter Yashasvi Jaiswal&mdash;a move that has been questioned a lot since Jaiswal was part of the provisional squad for the tournament.
The five spinners, two of which offer the same skill (Axar and Jadeja), have also been termed one too many, if not two. The idea behind selecting the spinners could be the slow and turning pitches of Dubai&mdash;the venue where India will play all its matches.
India start their campaign against Bangladesh on Feb 20 before facing Pakistan on Feb 23 and New Zealand on Mar 2 in the last group-stage match.

The five spinners, two of which offer the same skill (Axar and Jadeja), have also been termed one too many, if not two. The idea behind selecting the spinners could be the slow and turning pitches of Dubai—the venue where India will play all its matches. India start their campaign against Bangladesh on Feb 20 before facing Pakistan on Feb 23 and New Zealand on Mar 2 in the last group-stage match.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy-2025">Champions Trophy</a> is just two days away, and eight teams are set to fight for the title up for grabs for the first time since 2017. Host Pakistan will be aiming to take advantage of home conditions as they look to defend their title, which they had won by beating India in the&nbsp; final.
With the tournament being played in the subcontinent's batting-friendly conditions, here is one batter from each team to look out for:
<h2>Batters to look out for from each team in Champions Trophy 2025:</h2>
Shubman Gill (India)
The Indian vice-captain is in top form, scoring 259 runs in the recently-concluded three-ODI series against England with two fifties and a hundred. Gill has been looked at as India's future skipper and a successor to Virat Kohli for quite some time now. The batter has scored 1,900 runs since Jan 1, 2023, in 35 innings at an average of 61 with six hundreds and 11 fifties&mdash;the second most behind Sri Lanka's Pathum Nissanka's 1931 runs in 46 matches.

Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistan)
The Pak skipper showed his form in the tri-nation series, scoring 122 not out as their team chased a mammoth 352. Rizwan has been Pakistan's most prolific scorer with 1458 runs in 30 innings since 2023. He scored these runs at an average of 63 with nine fifties and two hundreds.
Heinrich Klaasen (South Africa)
The Proteas wicketkeeper-batter has been a destructive force in the subcontinent, including the ODI World Cup 2023. He has scored 1278 runs in 28 matches since January 2023&mdash;the most for South Africa. He scored those runs at an average of 53 with three hundreds, and six fifties.
Travis Head (Australia)
Arguably one of the most fearsome batters in the world right now. Head loves a big stage, as was evident by his performance in the last WTC Final and ODI World Cup final. The IPL experience has made him a beast in the subcontinent as well, and he'll surely be one of the batters to look out for in the upcoming Champions Trophy.
Kane Williamson (New Zealand)
The former Kiwi skipper has been in prime form recently, hitting 133 not out against South Africa in the recently-concluded tri-series in Pakistan. He had also scored a fifty in the three-nation tournament. It could also be his last potential chance to win an ICC trophy with New Zealand in white-ball format.
Jaker Ali (Bangladesh)
Although famous for his T20I bashing, Jaker Ali could very well be Bangladesh's most important batter on the flat pitches of Dubai and Pakistan. In the five ODIs he has played so far in the career, the batter has scored 151 runs at an average of 50 and a strike rate of 112 with one fifty to his name.
Harry Brook (England)
The England star failed to impress during the India ODIs but is one of the most prolific and talented batters to look out for in the tournament. Brook is touted as the next big thing in England cricket with 23 ODIs under his belt. He has scored 769 runs in those matches at a strike rate of 101 with one hundred and five fifties.
Azmatullah Omarzai (Afghanistan)
Omarzai is the backbone of Afghanistan's middle order, with 872 runs in 29 matches at an average of 54 with a hundred and seven fifties since 2023. He, along with Hashmatullah Shahidi, has bailed out the team on many occasions, including the famous ODI World Cup win over Pakistan in the ODI World Cup 2023.

2025 Champions Trophy: Where to watch matches live in your country - Check Inside

Tim Southee, a stalwart of New Zealand cricket, will find himself in an unfamiliar position during the ICC Men&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> 2025&mdash;watching from the sidelines rather than playing. The former Blackcaps bowler and captain announced his retirement from international cricket at the end of 2024, meaning both he and Trent Boult will be absent as New Zealand aims to reclaim the trophy they last won in 2000.
Despite the relatively inexperienced fast-bowling attack, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/tim-southee">Southee</a> is optimistic about his former team&rsquo;s chances in Pakistan. The Blackcaps&rsquo; recent victory in the Tri-Nation Series, which served as a warm-up for the tournament, left a strong impression on him.

&ldquo; The way the team has played, with different guys stepping up, shows a great mix of experience and exciting young talent," Southee remarked. "The Tri-Nation Series has provided valuable experience and momentum heading into the Champions Trophy. Getting accustomed to the conditions in Pakistan can only be beneficial."
Key to New Zealand&rsquo;s prospects will be Kane Williamson and captain Mitchell Santner. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/kane-williamson">Williamson</a>, back in form with crucial contributions in the Tri-Nation Series, brings a calming presence and a seasoned understanding of match situations.
&ldquo; It&rsquo;s great to see Kane with some scores under his belt," Southee said. "He&rsquo;s pure class, and even though he hasn&rsquo;t played much one-day cricket recently, he looked completely in control. That ability to read the game and stay composed is what sets top batters apart."
<h2>'Santer is a skillful bowler'</h2>
Southee also praised Santner&rsquo;s leadership, describing him as a calm and thoughtful captain who leads by example across all facets of the game.
&ldquo;Mitch has done a fantastic job," he noted. "He&rsquo;s a skilful bowler, a sharp fielder, and a more-than-capable batter. I experienced his captaincy toward the end of my career, and he thinks about the game well. I&rsquo;m sure he&rsquo;ll lead from the front."
While Williamson and Santner provide the backbone of experience, the spotlight will also be on emerging stars like fast bowler Will O&rsquo;Rourke and all-rounder Nathan Smith. O&rsquo;Rourke, who claimed four wickets in the Tri-Nation final, has impressed in both Test and limited-overs formats.
&ldquo; It&rsquo;s different not having Trent and myself at an ICC event, but it&rsquo;s exciting to see this new group take the stage," Southee said. &ldquo; Will has the attributes to succeed at the international level&mdash;pace, bounce, and a desire to keep improving. The exposure to these conditions in Pakistan will be invaluable for him."
Southee also highlighted Smith&rsquo;s confidence and self-belief, traits he sees as essential at the top level.&nbsp;&ldquo; Will is a man of few words but listens and learns. Nathan has a real confidence about him, and you need that in international cricket. Both are still growing, and I&rsquo;m sure they&rsquo;ll be massive assets for New Zealand for years to come."
As the Champions Trophy approaches, Southee remains hopeful that the Blackcaps can replicate the success of the 2000 squad.
&ldquo;New Zealand has a strong track record in ICC events&mdash;they&rsquo;re always in the mix. In a tournament like this, if you get on a roll, anything can happen. I&rsquo;d love to see the team there at the end, lifting the trophy," he concluded.

Champions Trophy 2025: Additional tickets to go on sale from today- How and where to buy tickets

Legendary Australian cricketer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/adam-gilchrist">Adam Gilchrist</a> has suggested that stand-in captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/steve-smith">Steve Smith</a> should open the batting in Australia&rsquo;s ODI team for the upcoming Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Gilchrist believes this move would allow Smith to face more deliveries and maximise his impact.
In Australia's recent 2-0 ODI series defeat to Sri Lanka, Smith, batting in the middle order, managed scores of just 12 and 29. With young opener Jake Fraser-McGurk struggling for consistency, Gilchrist sees Smith as a strong opening option, though he also finds Matt Short a viable candidate to partner with Travis Head.
&ldquo; It&rsquo;s a tough call right now, but I believe Steve Smith should open. I&rsquo;m not sure where he batted in Sri Lanka, but Travis Head is a certainty. I also like Matt Short in that role&mdash;he forms a good left-hand, right-hand combination,&rdquo; Gilchrist said on ABC Summer Grandstand on Saturday.
He added, &ldquo;Smith has opened in T20 cricket successfully, so I don&rsquo;t see why he couldn&rsquo;t do it in ODIs. Maybe he&rsquo;s too valuable in the middle order, but in a 50-over game, you want your best batters facing as many balls as possible. It&rsquo;s a strong option to consider.&rdquo;
<h2>Injury woes for Australia</h2>
Australia will enter the Champions Trophy without key pacers <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mitchell-starc">Mitchell Starc</a>, Josh Hazlewood and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pat-cummins">Pat Cummins</a>, as well as all-rounders Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh, who are sidelined due to injuries.
With group-stage clashes against England, Afghanistan, and South Africa, Gilchrist believes Australia could face difficulties in Pakistan, especially with limited preparation in the ODI format.
&ldquo; There hasn&rsquo;t been much focus on ODIs lately,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;Australia had a fantastic summer, but teams mainly prioritise 50-over cricket during a World Cup year. With the next ODI World Cup in 2027, this tournament is an opportunity to experiment with younger players, which could lead to mixed results.&rdquo;
Despite the challenges, Gilchrist acknowledged Australia&rsquo;s ability to fight through tough situations. &ldquo; They always find a way to get through tournaments, but conditions in Pakistan and the absence of key players will make this a tough campaign,&rdquo; he concluded.

Champions Trophy 2025: Smith should open the batting for Australia, says former Oz wicketkeeper

India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal is set to return to the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai during the semi-final against Vidarbha in Nagpur from Feb 17-21. The move comes after the batter was replaced in India's Champions Trophy squad with mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy.
Jaiswal was included in India's provisional 15-man squad for the ICC tournament but was eventually left out in the final squad announced on Feb 11.
Jaiswal's presence will add more power to a star-studded Mumbai team.&nbsp;Apart from Jaiswal, Ajinkya Rahane, T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube and Shardul Thakur are the other India internationals in Mumbai's squad.
<h2>Gambhir explains Jaiswal's snub</h2>
Roping in Chakaravarthy in place of Jaiswal raised a few eyebrows but India coach Gautam Gambhir gave an explanation around that after India's final ODI against England on Feb 12. Notably, Varun was included in the England squad only after his 14-wicket Player of the Series performance in the T20Is vs England prior to the ODIs.
"I'm not going to say that he's going to start and all that stuff, but it's always good to have a strong bowling line-up because we know that if he can actually get those wickets in the middle, it's always going to be an advantage, and that was one of the reasons. Otherwise, we know that Yashasvi has got a fabulous future ahead. It's just that we could only pick 15," Gambhir had said.
Jaiswal in Ranji Trophy
Jaiswal has previously played one game in Ranji Trophy this season - the same match where Rohit Sharma marked his return to the domestic cricket - against Jammu and Kashmir. The batter, however, had failed to impress in the match - scoring four runs in the first innings and 26 in the second one.
Mumbai went on to lose the match by five wickets - putting them in a tricky position to make it to the QFs but they somehow managed eventually.

India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal joins Mumbai squad for Ranji Trophy semis after Champions Trophy snub

Team India is all set to begin its Champions Trophy 2025 campaign in less than a week as they bid for their third title in the tournament. The team selection was a close call as batters like Ishan Kishan and later Yashasvi Jaiswal missed the plane despite performing in the domestic circuit. However, one name that stood out was Karun Nair who made a statement in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy but was snubbed in favour of big names. <o:p></o:p>

According to Nair, chief selector Agarkar had a clear plan for the Champions Trophy squad. Nair's omission comes despite him having an impressive record in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which saw him in the conversation for a place in the tournament. However, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant were preferred in the squad.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>
"It was good to see that a clear statement was given, and I think he made it very clear that, you know, what their thinking was, which makes it easier for the player to understand where he needs to go and what he needs to do. For me at least, it is just about focusing on the next match and focusing on winning the Ranji Trophy at the moment," Karun Nair told RevSportz in an interview.<o:p></o:p>

ICC announces hike of $3,600,000 in Champions Trophy prize money - Check how much winner will get

Pakistan skipper Mohammad Rizwan has backed ace batter and former captain Babar Azam to break the rut in form in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. Babar has been struggling for form since the last one and a half years and was dismissed cheaply in the currently ongoing tri-series as well.
"Babar has scored so many runs for Pakistan that we expect him to score a hundred in each game," Rizwan said as quoted by cricket news website ESPNCricinfo. "If we don't judge him by those extreme expectations, you'll find he's still chipping in and contributing valuably for us.

"As a captain, I expect a lot more of him too because of all he has done in the past. There is obviously an additional pressure because of it and I'm sure he feels that too. But if you look at his innings in South Africa, [he is still scoring runs]. It's not as if he has clear technical deficiencies, but he is still being tested. I am confident he'll come out of it," Rizwan added.
<h2>Babar's worrying form&nbsp;</h2>
Former Pakistan skipper Babar has been in a fix ever since the 2023 Asia Cup. He has scored 901 runs in 24 innings of 25 matches at an average of 42.90. He has managed eight fifties and a hundred - his average in that period, however, dropped to 38 against a career average of 56 if the innings of 151 against Nepal is taken out of account.
In the two matches played in the ongoing tri-series against South Africa and New Zealand, Babar managed 23 and 10 runs, respectively as an opener - causing more headache for Pakistan.
The batter did score two fifties on the tour of South Africa in December 2024 and Pakistan hope that he'll get back to form in the upcoming tournament in time as they look to defend their title.

Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has detailed how a change in mindset midway through the tournament (2017 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy-2025" rel="dofollow">ICC Champions Trophy</a>) helped them overcome a massive mental block of beating India in an ICC event, as they accomplished their dream of squashing a billion Indian hopes in the summit clash, winning by 180 runs.
India beat Pakistan comprehensively in their group stage game earlier but faltered on the day when it mattered the most. Though India hold an upper hand over Pakistan in the World Cups (50 and 20 overs), the Men in Green have tasted success against their archrivals in Champions Trophy history, winning three of the five outings in the tournament.

Reflecting on how Pakistan turned the tables around in that tournament, Sarfaraz said a pep talk from the seniors, including two all-rounders, Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez, helped them create history, winning their maiden Champions Trophy.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Afterwards (following defeat to India in the group stage), we had a great team meeting, and some of our senior guys&mdash;Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez&mdash;all said their piece. You need those types of characters around you.&rdquo;&nbsp;

Pakistan lost their tournament opener to India but won the remaining games against South Africa, Sri Lanka and England en route to the final. After Pakistan had the better of the hosts in the crucial semis clash, beating India was a mere formality.
<h2>History!</h2>
In the final, Fakhar Zaman hit a brilliant hundred, while handy contributions from the middle order propelled them to 338 for four in 50 overs. India got off to the worst possible start, losing the top three, including <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/virat-kohli" rel="dofollow">Virat Kohli</a> inside the first ten overs. Middle order collapse meant India had young <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/hardik-pandya" rel="dofollow">Hardik Pandya</a>, and seasoned campaigner Ravindra Jadeja alongside the tail to chase the target; that turned out too much, as India lost the match by 180 runs.
"We knew we had beaten some of the best teams, so India was nothing we had not seen. I told the guys to relax, forget the result, and just give 100 per cent."&nbsp;
&ldquo; The rest is history. When the last wicket went down, and we won, it is impossible to describe that feeling in words. When I took the last catch, I was at the gully. And I just ran. I saw Shoaib Malik and ran into his arms, I jumped into him and hugged him. The whole team then joined in. It was indescribable,&rdquo; Sarfaraz noted.

Sarfaraz on how ‘change in mindset’ helped Pakistan crush India in 2017 Champions Trophy final

India coach Gautam Gambhir has explained the reasoning behind replacing batter Yashasvi Jaiswal with spinner Varun Chakaravarthy in the Champions Trophy squad. The replacement came on the last day of the squad deadline on Feb 11, a day before India's final ODI against England on Feb 12.
Jaiswal was included in the ODI squad against England, while Chakaravarthy was added at the last minute after his 14-wicket Player of the Series show against England in the T20Is series.
"Look, the only reason was because we wanted another wicket-taking option in the middle. We know what Varun brings to the table and know that Varun can be a massive threat to a lot of teams who haven't played him. He could be an X-factor as well," Gambhir said after completing 3-0 whitewash against England in Ahmedabad on Feb 12.

&ldquo;Obviously, we know that he&rsquo;s an important factor. But as I mentioned, people like Harshit (Rana), Arshdeep (Singh), Mohammed Shami, all these guys will put their hands up. It&rsquo;s a great opportunity for them to try and deliver for the country," he added.

"We are going to the Champions Trophy to become champions," Shanto said as reported by cricket news website ESPNCricinfo.&nbsp;
"All eight teams deserve to be champions in this tournament. They are all quality teams. I believe our team has the ability. No one will feel extra pressure. Bangladesh's performance in ODIs has been sub-par - they have lost 24 of the 41 ODIs they have played since 2023, including their last series against West Indies in December 2024.
The team is missing some established names in Litton Das and Tamim Iqbal but Shanto remains confident about the 15-man squad selected for the tournament.

2025 Champions Trophy: Skipper Shanto says Bangladesh 'going to tournament to become champions'

The ICC <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> is set to begin in eight days and the teams were expected to submit their final squad on Tuesday (Feb 11). Leading to the tournament, some of the marquee players have become unavailable or are doubtful due to injuries. The injuries could add to the woes of the teams for the tournament which will witness cut-throat competition and is being played under comparatively harsh conditions of the sub-continent.
<h2>Here's the list of all the players ruled out or doubtful for Champions Trophy 2025</h2>
Jasprit Bumrah (India)
The premier Indian pacer suffered a back injury in early January during the Sydney Test against Australia.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/jasprit-bumrah">Bumrah</a> hasn't played any cricket since then, but was included in India's provisional 15-man squad. He was ruled out of the tournament on Feb 11 as confirmed by the BCCI. Harshit Rana has been named his replacement.

Pat Cummins (Australia)
The Australian skipper and pacer has been ruled out due to an ankle injury. This is a double blow for Australia - the ODI World Cup 2023 winners and one of the major title contenders. With&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pat-cummins">Cummins</a> being out, Australia not only lost a pacer but their captain as well.
Josh Hazlewood (Australia)
Another Kangaroo pacer has been ruled out of the ICC tournament. Hazlewood, who also last played in India Tests, is out with a hip injury. With both Hazlewood and Cummins not playing, Australia have a headache when it comes to their bowling attack.
Lockie Ferguson (New Zealand)
The express Kiwi pacer is doubtful for the Champions Trophy because of a hamstring injury. The Kiwis will be monitoring him closely given his experience and pace on the sub-continent pitches, thanks to the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Mitchell Starc (Australia)
The third Aussie pacer out of the Champions Trophy. Starc, however, is not injured but has withdrawn from the Champions Trophy due to personal reasons.
Harris Rauf (Pakistan)
The Pakistan pacer is suffering from a side strain and is currently doubtful for the Champions Trophy. He's one of the express pacers Pakistan have who can hurry the batters even on dead pitches. His absence could hit Pakistan's chances of defending their title.
Anrich Nortje (South Africa)
The fast bowler has been ruled out of the ICC tournament with a back injury. His experience in the sub-continent, which he gained playing the IPL, would have been handy for the Proteas who are still chasing their first ICC title.
Gerald Coetzee (South Africa)
Another South African pacer ruled out of the Champions Trophy. He shot to fame with his brilliant bowling in the 2023 ODI World Cup but a groin injury means he won't be filling the void made by Nortje.
Jacob Bethell (England)
The England all-rounder suffered a hamstring injury during the first ODI against India in Nagpur on February 6, giving England's plans a jolt during crunch time.

The teams, however, are yet to submit the final squad to the ICC for which the deadline is Tuesday (Feb 11). The batter could still make the cut technically. The call-up, however, seems unlikely as India already won their two matches in the ongoing ODI series against England and all the batters are doing a decent job so far.
Meanwhile, Bengal player Manoj Tiwary also backed Nair to make it to the squad.&nbsp;
"I felt Karun Nair should have gotten an opportunity because he is in tremendous form. But somehow Agarkar, the chief selector, said that he couldn't make a place for him which is unfortunate," said Tiwary while answering a media query during a recent charity match on the outskirts of Bengaluru.

The call-up, however, seems unlikely as India already won their two matches in the ongoing ODI series against England and all the batters are doing a decent job so far. Meanwhile, Bengal player Manoj Tiwary also backed Nair to make it to the squad. The selectors of the Indian cricket team will have a tough decision on their hands as they have to submit the final squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 on Tuesday (Feb 11). With India sweating on the fitness of Jasprit Bumrah, the selectors panel led by Ajit Agarkar will have to take a call on the star bowler&rsquo;s fitness. In case Bumrah is not available, the Indian side is likely to pick Varun Chakravarthy in the final 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy 2025.<o:p></o:p>

The ICC&rsquo;s deadline to submit the final 15-member squad is on Tuesday, meaning the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and its selectors will no longer be allowed to make changes (unless an injury or unavoidable situation arises). According to reports, Bumrah&rsquo;s selection in the final squad is a tight call after he had scans on a back injury at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) last week. The star bowler has not played since the Sydney Test in January when he left the field on the final day. <o:p></o:p>
On the other hand, Varun Chakravarthy has taken the spotlight with Player of the Series performances in the England T20I series. His game has caught the eye of the selectors, which saw him get drafted into the ODI side. He made his debut for India in the ODIs in Cuttack and ended with figures of 54/1.<o:p></o:p>

Former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad, meanwhile, says that 'it'll be a setback for India' if Bumrah doesn't play.
"If Bumrah doesn't play it is going to be a huge setback for India that is for sure. Because he is somebody who is incredible as far as fast bowling is concerned and irrespective of the format. Be it T20, be it Test matches or ODIs - irrespective of the format he is an incredible player and extremely effective with his line and lengths and extremely and he is a confident bowler. I have not seen anyone line Bumrah I would say. So it is going to be a huge setback for Team India," said Prasad to WION on the sidelines of a charity match on Saturday (Feb 8).
