Pat Cummins-led Australia were off to a disastrous start in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. Facing the hosts in their tournament opener, Australia lost by six wickets and were then beaten by South Africa by 134 runs in their following game. After their two back-to-back defeats, where they struggled with the bat and looked ordinary on the field overall, Steve Smith opened up on the jolts ahead of his side's clash versus Sri Lanka, on Monday (Oct 16) in Lucknow.

Smith said that the team had several things to work on. The former Aussie captain is hopeful that things will change for the good&nbsp;in the third match.

<h2>'The boxes aren't ticked yet which aren't a good sign'</h2>

Talking to the broadcasters, Smith told, "Not overthinking much though we have lost two games. We put ourselves in a corner by the two sides, which played really well. It is all about coming into the groove as soon as possible."

"The boxes aren't ticked yet, which as the Australians, aren't a good sign. We haven't been able to pounce on the chances that we should try to hold on. We have to rectify and see how things go by," he further added.

Australia locked horns with 1996 winners Sri Lanka in Lucknow on Monday afternoon. Kusal Mendis-led Lankans won the toss and have opted to bat first. The Islanders are off to a fine start, being 96 for no loss after 17 overs.

Five-time winners Australia, the most successful side in ODI World Cup history, will be desperate for a turnaround with a win over the Lankans. If they lose three on the trot, it will be very difficult for them to comeback into the ten-team tournament. At present, the Men in Yellow are at the bottom with a Net Run Rate of&nbsp;-1.846.

'We put ourselves in a corner': Steve Smith on Australia's horror start in CWC 2023

Australian captain Pat Cummins was a relieved man after his side registered its first win in the World Cup by beating Sri Lanka at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Monday (Oct 16). Fresh off two back-to-back losses, the five-time World Cup champions had a point to prove and according to Cummins, his players just did that.&nbsp;

After the win, Cummins said his team was not bothered by the outside noise, even after the slow start to the World Cup campaign.

"There were a lot of people watching heading into the World Cup which is great but we're not bothered by outside noise. All parts of the game came together today. We would want to keep it up," said Cummins during the post-match chat.&nbsp;

Quizzed about what his team did differently to secure the win, Cummins said:&nbsp;&nbsp;"Probably nothing that was said. It was more on the back of two losses, our group's got pretty high standards so everyone wanted to come out."&nbsp;

"I thought we bowled decently but we were staring down the barrel at 1/130 or something like that. But the bowlers stuck to their task and to bowl them out for 209 was great. Hard to say but I think par was probably 300."

<h2>290-300 would've been par</h2>

Losing captain&nbsp;Kusal Mendis attributed the loss to playing too many dot deliveries in the middle overs, which contributed to the eventual implosion.&nbsp;

"290-300 I think would have been a good total on this pitch.&nbsp;More dot balls and not rotating strike enough. It was still a good wicket. Unfortunately, we played too many risky shots," said Mendis.&nbsp;

Despite three losses, Mendis showed faith in the batting unit, adding that the bowlers were getting better as well.&nbsp;

"Last two games we have batted really well. Today, we struggled a little bit. Hopefully, in the next match, we get momentum. I think we can do better than today - I have confidence in our batting unit.&nbsp;The bowling unit is getting better and I know we'll do better in the next matches."

Sri Lanka will now face the Netherlands at the same venue in three days' time while Australia will travel to Bengaluru to square up against Pakistan.&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: 'Outside noise doesn't bother us...', Pat Cummins after Australia trounce Sri Lanka

The under-fire Australia Cricket Team received a boost with injured Travis Head declared fit to join the side in India for the World Cup 2023. Head, who suffered a fracture in his left hand during the away South Africa series, was out of action since but got picked in the final 15 to remain available from mid-way into the tournament. As per the latest reports, Head has resumed training in nets and will fly to India later this week.

Head had the cast removed last week and is facing throwdowns in the nets. Speaking to the media in Australia, Head said he is healing well but would still require a final clearance before joining the 14-man Australian CWC squad in India.&nbsp;

However, if everything goes according to the plan, Head would reach India in time for Australia’s clash against the Netherlands on October 25, although his selection would depend on his fitness and match practice.&nbsp;

"It's coming along well, and probably better than we hoped," Head told cricket.com.au.&nbsp;

"When we decided not to go with surgery, which would have meant a ten-week recovery, we were told it would be a minimum of six weeks with the splint before we could look at playing again."

"Going by that plan, the Netherlands game will be just under six weeks from impact, which is a pretty aggressive date, so everything would have to go perfectly from here to make that deadline,” the opening batter added.

Mitchell Marsh opened alongside David Warner in the first two games, with both failing to provide Australia with a good start, resulting in the team failing to win any of those games.&nbsp;

Travis, who, upon returning, will take up his opening slot, said he is excited about the prospect of joining the team.

"But we'll just see how it progresses over the next few days, and I'm excited by the prospect of joining the boys over there later in the week,” Head added.

<h2>Could Head be replaced at the last minute?</h2>

Contrary to all the talk about relating to Travis Head, the possibility of him getting replaced at the last minute if Australia loses to Sri Lanka in their next match is higher.&nbsp;

Speaking on crossing the hurdles together as a team, Head said, "There's still a few hurdles we need to clear, and everything needs to fall into place from my end and the team's point of view over there before the final decision is made.”

Meanwhile, Australia will face Sri Lanka in Lucknow on Monday (Oct 16).

World Cup 2023: Under-fire Australia receive boost as Travis Head set to join team soon

For the first time in Cricket World Cup history, Australia’s back is against the wall, having lost their opening two encounters to India and South Africa, respectively. Under-fire all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who opened in both games, vowed to learn from his mistakes and try and put his best foot forward in the upcoming matches.

Known to pressurize the opposition from the ball one, the newly-appointed Australia’s T20I captain admitted failing in his attempts against two quality bowling attacks. While against India, Marsh edged one off to the first slip on a duck, he played a wrong line in the game versus South Africa, nicking the ball to the mid-off area of Marco Jansen and hitting just seven runs.

Much like how every team plans ahead of each game, an opening stand plays a crucial role, something Australia has not been able to do in two games.

Being cornered, given their stance on the points table, Marsh believes Australia is ready to bounce back and play with a winning mindset.

"I still feel really good, it's obviously been a tough start personally," Marsh told reporters in Lucknow, the venue for Australia’s third CWC game against Sri Lanka on Monday (Oct 16).

"The other night (it) was tough conditions, and I probably wasn't able to put pressure back on the bowlers, which is a strength of mine, certainly in the Powerplay.&nbsp;I'll certainly be looking to be doing that."

"And 'Davey' (Warner) and I haven't got off to a partnership yet, which really helps set up our innings, so that’s something we need to rectify, and hopefully, that's this game,” the right-handed batter noted.

<h2>‘Excited about rectifying our mistakes’</h2>

Dropping catches is a crime in the cricket world, and Australia has committed it at least seven times in two matches. While their unwanted record of putting down six catches against the Proteas is one to look into, Marsh is aware of the repercussions Australia faced after he dropped Virat Kohli during the 200-run chase in Chennai.

"(Fielding) has been a hallmark of every good cricketing team, especially the Australian cricket team, and it's something as a group we're really proud of," Marsh said. "There's no doubt we've been off the mark with that in the first couple of games.

"We've got to be excited about rectifying that, playing a really exciting brand of cricket and hopefully bringing back a bit of energy in the field,” Marsh added.

World Cup: Lackluster Mitchell Marsh vows to correct mistakes as cornered Australia eye comeback

For the first time in Cricket World Cup history, Australia lost their opening two matches, unlocking a rare slump start to their campaign. Former Australia captain and top-order batter Aaron Finch feels the players' body language is flat, but there is no panic in the dressing room as the five-time winners can still peak in this tournament. Following Australia’s second straight loss in this ongoing CWC 2023, Finch shared his opinion on what is happening behind the scenes.

The team from Down Under lost their first match to India in Chennai by six wickets and went down against South Africa by 134 runs in Lucknow.

Besides the shallow performances from batters in both games, dropping catches and poor out-fielding come across as bigger worries. Against the Proteas, the Aussies dropped six catches, the most by a team in a World Cup game.

"The body language on the field is quite flat at the moment from Australia," Finch told ESPNcricinfo's Match Day show.&nbsp;

"Even with the ball, they are a bit standoffish, they are waiting for things to happen, and that can become contagious among the group as well.

"The last thing you want to do is start the tournament poorly because there's no way to get yourself back into it. It's been a tough start…two games where you say if we break even, win one lose one, we are okay with that, then it's a bit of a softer run home compared especially with India first up,” Finch noted.

Unlike before, Australia’s road to the World Cup had many obstacles, with the team first losing to South Africa (3-2) despite leading 2-0 at one stage.

The Pat Cummins-led side then lost the ODI series against India and entered the World Cup with five losses from six matches.&nbsp;

Finch added that playing so many games in the lead-up to the World Cup, including two practice matches and with management also wanting players to remain fit throughout, took a toll and reflected on their performances.

"The tone was set early on, and it hasn't recovered yet. They need a way to freshen up, mentally and physically, because it's been a gruelling lead-up with five ODIs in South Africa, three T20s, coming to India and playing three ODIs then two warm-up matches when they only had 11 fit players. One-day cricket, physically, takes quite a bit out of you,” Finch added.

<h2>Finch backs Inglis’ selection</h2>

What raised eyebrows against South Africa was the shock selection of Josh Inglis ahead of regular Alex Carey. When asked to explain this, Finch said he was not surprised by this call, claiming Carey’s form in ODIs heading into the CWC was a worry anyway.&nbsp;

"Don't think there's any panic," Finch said. "If you look at the stats, Alex Carey's last 10 games, [there are] seven scores under 10. It just looks like he's been a little bit frantic when he's got the crease, there hasn't been a real pattern to the way he's gone about his innings.

"Think going into the warm-up games they were still confident he could come good, then to miss out in the first game to [Ravindra] Jadeja, a decent ball around the wicket, but you should be able to keep that out at least. It's a harsh selection, but there is some justification behind it,” the former Australia captain added.

Meanwhile, with two losses in as many matches, Australia sit in the bottom two on the points table. They next face Sri Lanka on Monday (Oct 16) in Lucknow.&nbsp;

World Cup - Don’t think there’s any panic, they need to freshen up: Aaron Finch on AUS's rare slump start

Ahead of Australia's CWC '23 opener, where they face hosts India in Chennai on Sunday (Oct&nbsp;8), David Warner has hit back at the constant talk in the media regarding his white-ball retirement. Warner has lost form in Tests but remains good in ODIs, in the South Africa and India series right before the World Cup. He has often stated that he will&nbsp;retire from Tests after New Year’s match against Pakistan, at his home ground at the SCG, Sydney. The left-hander has&nbsp;expressed his desire to continue representing Australia in white-ball cricket until the 2024 T20 World Cup, which will be held in the West Indies and the USA.

Before Australia take the field versus India, Warner reacted to the spotlight on his white-ball retirement and told&nbsp;Fox Cricket,&nbsp;"I just can’t wait to finish, and then they’ll have to find someone else’s name to use as clickbait.&nbsp;It’s incredible. To be honest – if I’m being brutally honest, it’s actually been sickening."

Ahead of Australia's CWC '23 opener, where they face hosts India in Chennai on Sunday (Oct 8), David Warner has hit back at the constant talk in the media regarding his white-ball retirement. Warner has lost form in Tests but remains good in ODIs, in the South Africa and India series right before the World Cup. He has often stated that he will retire from Tests after New Year’s match against Pakistan, at his home ground at the SCG, Sydney. The left-hander has expressed his desire to continue representing Australia in white-ball cricket until the 2024 T20 World Cup, which will be held in the West Indies and the USA. Before Australia take the field versus India, Warner reacted to the spotlight on his white-ball retirement and told Fox Cricket, "I just can’t wait to finish, and then they’ll have to find someone else’s name to use as clickbait. It’s incredible. To be honest – if I’m being brutally honest, it’s actually been sickening." Here's Australia's 15-man squad for the World Cup 2023 -

Pat Cummins (captain), Sean Abbott, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa

Travelling Reserves - Tanveer Sangha, Matthew Short

Opener Travis Head broke his left hand during the fourth ODI against South Africa and has&nbsp; remained out of action since. While head coach Andrew McDonald earlier revealed Travis will be out for at least the first half of the tournament, the left-handed batter still got picked in the hope of attaining full fitness by the time the business end of competition approaches.

In his absence, star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will open alongside David Warner, while returning Marnus Labuschagne will bat at number four, with Steve Smith set to come in at three.&nbsp;

Alex Carey and Josh Inglis are two wicketkeepers in the final 15, while Australia picked three&nbsp;all-rounders, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Cameron Green.

Captain Pat Cummins will lead the pace attack, consisting of the veteran pair of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood while bowling all-rounder Sean Abbott got the nod as backup pacer. Leggie Adam Zampa is the lone spin option on the side.

<h2>Australia ready for 6th world title</h2>

Former five-time winners, Australia endured a tough time in the recently-concluded series, having lost to South Africa and India, respectively, but will still be among the favourites heading into the marquee event.

Going by their record in the ICC tournaments, Australia will be a force to reckon with. Considering most of the players in the squad are the ones who had played together in a couple of World Cups before, including Smith, Maxwell, Warner, Marsh, Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood, the Oz will fight for the record 6th world title - most by any country in game's history.

Australia will face the Netherlands and Pakistan in their two warm-up games and take on hosts India in their CWC opener on October 8.

Australia name final 15 for World Cup 2023, injured Travis Head included, Ashton Agar dropped

All eyes are now on the upcoming CWC 2023 edition, which gets underway in India on October 05 in Ahmedabad. All the participating teams are working hard to finalise their team combination and keep their players fit, and former cricketers and experts are busy making predictions for the marquee event.

Former Australia stumper Adam Gilchrist has joined the bandwagon and shared his semi-finalists. Gilchrist, part of Australia's 1999, 2003 and 2007 World Cup winning campaigns, feels India, Australia, England and Pakistan will make the top four.

"I think India and Pakistan could feature, Australia and England are another two teams," Gilchrist told the press in a promotional event at Ahmedabad.

Recently, a second-stringed Australian side lost a five-match ODI series (2-3) to host South Africa despite leading 2-0.

Gilchrist, however, isn't concerned and stated, "Australia will learn a lot from their efforts in South Africa when they come to India. They have got three games before the World Cup against India. So, they will have a bit more of a full-strength squad there, that might tell us a bit about where they are at."

He further opined on Adam Zampa -- who was taken to the cleaners versus the Proteas and ended with 10-0-113-0 in the fourth ODI -- and added, "Adam Zampa, in South Africa, was at the receiving end a little bit but it's different conditions out here in India with different pitches and he is a world-class spin bowler, and he has shown that particularly across T20 cricket, and now he gets his chance in the 50-over World Cup. So it's a very knowledgeable group and they are going to have to use all that experience against batting line-ups across the globe and play without fear."

Australia have now shifted their focus to the three ODIs versus hosts India, which kicks off on Friday (September 22) in Mohali. For the upcoming series, the likes of regular captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell and Steve Smith have returned.&nbsp;

CWC 2023: Team India make the cut as former Aussie stumper Adam Gilchrist predicts semi-finalists

Heinrich Klaasen slammed 174 off 83 balls to lead South Africa to a 164-run win in the fourth one-day international against Australia at SuperSport Park on Friday.

Klaasen shared an extraordinary fifth wicket partnership of 222 off only 94 balls with David Miller (82 not out) as South Africa piled up 416 for five, their fifth-highest total in one-day internationals, before bowling out Australia for 252.

"To be honest I can't remember the last part of the innings. I’ll have to go back and watch it tonight," said Klaasen, who&nbsp;smashed 13 fours and 13 sixes before being caught on the boundary off the last ball of the innings.

"Some days guys have a day out," said Australian captain Mitchell Marsh, who for the second game in a row, was on the losing side after sending in the opposition.

"Klaasen was amazing. We got outplayed. Sometimes in international cricket, you have to take your hat off."

Alex Carey hit 99 off 77 balls for Australia and was the last man out. Lungi Ngidi took four for 51 and Kagiso Rabada three for 41 for South Africa.

<h2>Series levelled&nbsp;</h2>

South Africa's win tied the series at two matches apiece, setting up a decider in Johannesburg on Sunday.

With the World Cup only three weeks away, Australia had a potentially serious injury concern when in-form opening batsman Travis Head had to retire hurt after being struck on the left hand by fast bowler Gerald Coetzee. Australian team management announced that Head was due to go for a scan on Friday night with results not expected until Saturday.

A run spree of such magnitude did not seem likely as accurate Australian bowling and a slower-than-usual Centurion pitch saw South Africa make relatively slow progress on a ground known for high scoring. At the second drinks break, the total was 157 for three off 32 overs.

The acceleration started during a stand of 74 off 57 balls between Rassie van der Dussen (62) and Klaasen.

It went into over-drive when the left-handed Miller joined Klaasen and hit the second ball he faced, from leg-spinner Adam Zampa, for six.

Zampa was hammered for 113 runs off his 10 overs, equalling the dubious record for most runs conceded in a one-day international set by fellow Australian Mick Lewis, also against South Africa, in Johannesburg in 2006.

Marcus Stoinis conceded 81 runs and Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Ellis went for 79 apiece. Michael Neser, playing his first match of the series, was the least expensive Australian bowler, taking one for 59.

South Africa level ODI series after Heinrich Klassen's blitzkrieg

Former Australian Test cricket star&nbsp;Stuart&nbsp;MacGill&nbsp;has been arrested and charged for his alleged role in a commercial-scale cocaine deal, police said Friday. The retired leg-spinner came to the attention of detectives in April 2021, when he was allegedly kidnapped by a group of armed men outside his apartment in affluent northern Sydney.

The 52-year-old restaurateur told Australian radio network SEN last year that the men "stripped me naked, beat me up, threatened me and then just dumped me". Following a lengthy investigation into the incident, police have now alleged that&nbsp;MacGill's abduction was linked to his part in a drug deal.

Police said&nbsp;MacGill&nbsp;faced one count of "knowingly" taking part in the supply of a commercial quantity of a prohibited drug.&nbsp;MacGill&nbsp;was lauded as a talented bowler and played 44 Tests for Australia, but was unlucky that his career coincided with that of Shane Warne, ranked by many as the best spin bowler of all time.

<h3>Cricket Australia makes neck guards mandatory against pace bowlers</h3>

Australian batters will have to wear neck protectors on their helmets when facing fast or medium-pace bowlers for the 2023/24 season, Cricket Australia announced Thursday. The governing body has recommended neck guards be used since Australian batsman Phillip Hughes was killed after a bouncer hit him in the neck during a game in Sydney in 2014.

Stars such as Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith and David Warner had resisted wearing them but neck protectors will be mandatory in men's and women's matches when the new season starts in early October, Cricket Australia said. "Protecting the head and neck is extremely important in our sport," Cricket Australia's head of operations Peter Roach said in a statement.

He said the decision was based on "a lot of advice and consultation with a wide range of experts and stakeholders".&nbsp;

As things stand, the Proteas have not qualified for the 2023 World Cup and is placed eighth in the Super League standings. They will only seal the berth if the 11th-placed Ireland fail to whitewash Bangladesh in the upcoming away ODI series.

However, if they do and, in the process, go past South Africa’s Net Run Rate, they will seal direct qualification. In that case, South Africa will have to play the Qualifiers next month in Zimbabwe to fight for a place in the 2023 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Australia last toured South Africa in 2020 when they lost the ODI series 3-0. South Africa, in return, was supposed to travel Down Under for the slated white-ball series this year but decided to forfeit it, prioritising the launch of their newest domestic T20 league named SA20. As a result, points were deducted, and their chances of achieving direct qualification suffered a hit.

"It is the start of the international season for us, and it is a particularly important campaign in many respects because of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup which is taking place in India later in the year. We haven't qualified just yet, but we hope to be there and challenge the best in the world when the tournament is played in October and November," CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki said.

On how crucial this tour will be, keeping in mind the 2023 World Cup, Moseki said series like these against Australia only benefit South Africa.

"Games and tours like these against a formidable Australia side can only do good for our Proteas Men. It is also an opportunity for Coach Rob Walter and his team to keep building on the excellent work they have already done so far together. We look forward to watching them play, and we hope that South Africans will come out in their numbers and get behind the team in what should be a highly competitive tour," Moseki added.

Australia set to tour South Africa for 3 T20Is, 5 ODIs ahead of 2023 World Cup

Australia has dropped star Test batter Marnus Labuschagne in the 18-man preliminary squad for the bilateral ODIs (against South Africa and India) and ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 that begins in October. Regular ODI captain Pat Cummins, who fractured his left wrist during the fifth Ashes Test against England, will likely regain full fitness ahead of the mega event.

Cummins is said to be out for at least six weeks and will miss the three-match T20Is against South Africa starting August 30. He will join the side for the five One Dayers (from September 7). The right-arm seamer will try and play a few ODIs against India before the World Cup begins, with warm-up games starting in late September.

"Pat injured his left wrist diving in the field on the first day at The Oval," Chief Selector Bailey said. "He has an undisplaced fracture of his left radius, which requires six weeks of rehabilitation.

"We expect him to join the squad during the South African ODI Series. We view a period of enforced rest for Pat as a positive ahead of this important World Cup campaign. There are still a number of games he could play before the World Cup, which is more than enough for him to have a strong preparation," Bailey added.

While the 18-man preliminary squad includes most seasoned campaigners, New South Wales leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha and all-rounder Aaron Hardie are newcomers. Sangha, who has not featured for Australia on the international stage yet, travelled to New Zealand for the T20 series earlier. Hardie, on the other hand, a regular in Australia-A squads in the last 18 months, was picked in the T20I side for the South Africa series.

All-rounder Glenn Maxwell, also named in the list, will miss the South Africa ODIs due to paternity leave but will rejoin the side for three-match ODIs against India, starting September 22.&nbsp;

<h2>Marnus’ omission raises eyebrows</h2>

Labuschagne is the only notable omission from the Australia squad for the World Cup 2023 despite being regular in the ODI side over the past three years. The right-hander began his ODI career with a bang, hitting a hundred against South Africa in only his sixth ODI, but failed to replicate his form later. In his previous 14 ODIs, Labuschagne averaged 22.30 with only two fifties to his name.

The five-time World Cup winners will trim down their 18-man squad to 15 before the mega event gets underway.

Marnus Labuschagne dropped as Australia name 18-man preliminary squad for SA, IND ODIs, World Cup 2023

All-rounder Mitchell Marsh is named as the new interim captain of Australia’s T20I side for the scheduled three T20Is against South Africa, starting August 30, making him the frontrunner for the role leading into next year’s T20 World Cup. Australia also included three uncapped players, Spencer Johnson, Aaron Hardie and Matt Short, in the 14-man squad.

The decision to appoint Marsh as the T20I captain (strictly for this series for now) gives a broader view of the situation Australia cricket is currently in – with the selectors eyeing to appoint one captain for the white-ball format following ICC Men’s ODI World Cup in October-November, and Marsh looks like a viable choice going forward.

Though Pat Cummins is leading the ODI and Test teams, he is likely to vacate the spot in white-ball cricket following the mega event.

Meanwhile, head selector George Bailey backed Marsh to lead the Aussie ODI and T20I teams, saying,&nbsp;

"Mitch has long been a senior player within the white ball structure, with this an opportunity for him to add to his leadership skills at the international level. We look forward to him taking that step in South Africa," Bailey said.

Star players like Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Cameron Green and opener David Warner are rested following the Ashes and will join the side for the five-match ODIs.&nbsp;

While spin-bowling all-rounder Ashton Agar did not find a place in the side as he continues to recover from his calf injury, senior campaigner Steve Smith is picked and will find a home in the top order.

The three uncapped players, seamer Spencer Johnson and all-rounders Hardie and Short got picked on the back of impressive domestic performances. While Spencer impressed everyone with his death bowling during BBL last season for Brisbane Heat, Hardie (playing for Perth Scorchers) had a breakthrough season, ending as the tournament’s highest run-scorer with 460 runs at a strike-rate of over 140.

Matt Short, who scored 458 runs and picked 11 wickets, was picked by Punjab Kings in the IPL 2023.&nbsp;

"Aaron, Spencer and Matt have been outstanding in the BBL and identified as potential national players of the future," Bailey said. "This tour is a great opportunity for all three to demonstrate those skills in a national team environment."

Australia were bundled up for 416 on Day 2 of the second Ashes Test, at Lord's, before England ended the day's play at 278 for 4, trailing by&nbsp;138 runs. At 188 for 1, England lost the plot in the evening session as they lost three wickets due to Pat Cummins &amp; Co.'s short-ball tactics. Former South Africa skipper AB de Villiers lauded Cummins for his aggressive captaincy as Australia came back in the last session of Day 2.

De Villiers took to his official Twitter handle and wrote, "When a fast bowler, who’s also the Captain, and can hold the bat himself realises that no one is fully in control or comfortable against the short ball. Even the best in the world feel uncomfortable to quality short bowling to the right field placing. Credit to Cummins for taking this route, but more importantly, persisting with it. Aus have opened it up here while Eng looked like dominating procedures. Smart Cricket. Very entertaining."

Australia remain in the game at stumps on Day 2 due to the three late wickets -- with Ollie Pope, Ben Duckett (98) and Joe Root falling to the short-ball ploy. However, the visitors have a herculean task of stopping Ben Stokes &amp; Co. from racing ahead as their premier spinner Nathan Lyon got injured and limped off the field on Thursday.

For England, they are scoring at over 4.5 runs per over and will look to surpass Australia's 416 with wickets in hand. They will hope to take&nbsp;a sizeable lead and put pressure on Australia in their second essay.&nbsp;

Lord's Test: AB de Villiers gives thumbs up to Aussie skipper Pat Cummins' short ball ploy on Day 2

Nathan Lyon, on Wednesday (June 28), created history when England and Australia kicked off the second Ashes Test at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground, London. Featuring in the playing XI for Pat Cummins &amp; Co., Lyon became the sixth player and first bowler to play 100 successive Tests. Lyon has been a legend of the game and a key member of the Australian red-ball team over the past. This is his 122nd Test and he has so far accounted for a total of 495 wickets in whites.&nbsp;

Players with most successive Tests

Alastair Cook - 159

Allan Border - 153

Mark Waugh - 107

Sunil Gavaskar - 106

Brendon McCullum - 101

Nathan Lyon - 100*

Ahead of the commencement of the Lord's Test, Australia skipper Pat Cummins lavished huge praise on Lyon and was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au, "It's a testament to not only how good Nath is in terms of longevity and fitness and form, but to be able to play 100 Tests means you're getting picked in all conditions," Australia skipper Pat Cummins was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

"I know at the start of his career, you'd talk about (possibly playing) four quicks at the Gabba but he's just so valuable to our team that I couldn't imagine a side without Nath in there,” Cummins further added.

Meanwhile, Lyon also spoke about playing 100 consecutive Tests. "That’s something I’m really proud of. To be able to tick off 100 consecutive Test matches, that’s a proper stat in my head,” Lyon told Cricket Australia. The veteran spinner jokingly said, "That’s a lot of Test cricket, a lot of ups and downs. No wonder I’ve got no hair."

He added, "For any athlete to be successful over a long period of time, you’ve got to have really good people around you, and I’m not talking within the Australian cricket team. I feel like my family has been absolutely amazing, with their support and love and care. Then there is Tom Carter, who is arguably one of my best mates but also my PT who I do a lot of work with behind the scenes."

Lyon has had an astonishing career in the purest format of the game. He has churned out 495 scalps at an average of&nbsp;30.99, with best match figures of 13 for 154. He played a handy role with the bat (unbeaten 16) in Australia's two-wicket win in the Ashes 2023 opener, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, where he stitched an unbeaten 55-run stand with captain Cummins (44 not out) to help his side chase down 282 on the final day.&nbsp;

Ashes 2023: Nathan Lyon scripts history, becomes first bowler to play 100 successive Tests

Australia beat England by two wickets in the opening Test of Ashes 2023 to go 1-0 up in the five-match series. Ben Stokes &amp; Co. were on top in most parts of the contest in Edgbaston, Birmingham but could not get the last two wickets in Australia's 282-run chase on the final day as Usman Khawaja (65) and skipper Pat Cummins (44 not out) led the charge for their side. Throughout the game, England's aggressive approach made heads turn and impressed many but they failed to close the game to go down eventually.&nbsp;

Despite England conceding a 1-0 lead, former English batter Ian Bell believes Australia still have more to work on. Bell feels Australia looked scared during the Edgbaston Test and won only because they played in England's style, during the unbroken 55-run ninth-wicket stand between Cummins (44 not out) and Nathan Lyon (16*) in pursuit of 282. Australia had their back against the wall as they were reduced to 227 for 8 but Cummins-Lyon ensured no further setback for the visitors. Now,&nbsp;the ex-English batter feels they were rewarded for playing like England during the match-winning stand.&nbsp;

<h2>'Australia looked scared. They have more to work on'</h2>

"I'd go as far to say that Australia have more to work on," Bell said, as quoted by wisden.com. "After the first two days at Edgbaston, I was amazed how passive Australia were. It was like England used to play Ashes series in the really bad old days. Australia looked scared. I saw that in two examples."

"First, in the field setting for England's batters in the first innings. They had sweepers out on the off- and on-side after three overs. I'd never seen anything like it and as someone who has experienced the pressure cooker of an Ashes series - I won five out of seven - being afforded an easy option for a single as a batter like that would have been unheard of," Bell opined.

Bell, a veteran of 118 Tests, further added, "As I said, I think England's intent has unnerved Australia and the only time they showed any aggression themselves was when Alex Carey was out in that extraordinary final innings. Basically, they only played in England's style when they knew they were beaten and they had nothing to lose. Psychologically, that is fascinating. Brendon McCullum will pick up on that."

England and Australia will meet in the second Test, at Lord's, which commences on June 28.

Ashes 2023: Bell claims 'Australia have more to work on' despite Cummins & Co.'s narrow win in Edgbaston

England and Australia produced a humdinger of a match in the Ashes 2023 opener at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Opting to bat first, Ben Stokes-led England declared at 393 for 8, with Joe Root unbeaten on 118, whereas Australia posted 386 all-out courtesy of Usman Khawaja's 141. With a seven-run lead, England were dismissed for 273 but still gave a challenging 282-run target for the visitors, who rode on Khawaja's 65 and skipper Pat Cummins' 44 not out to win by two wickets in the final moments of the epic clash.

During the course of the game, many lauded Stokes-led England for their aggressive style of play. They declared their innings to put Australia to bat in the last few minutes of the opening day, to test the openers and create some chances, kept scoring at over 4, impressed one and all with their unorthodox field sets and smart bowling changes by Stokes.

On the other hand, Cummins received some criticism for his defensive field placements but the Aussie line-up trusted their own methods and didn't look completely out of sorts in front of England's Bazball approach. Eventually, Australia never allowed England to run away with the game and stayed alive to emerge on top by a whisker. Former Australian captain Tim Paine commented on both teams' contrasting style of play.&nbsp;

<h2>'Stokes and England make some funky fields and all of a sudden it's genius'</h2>

“I thought it was pretty much as I expected to be honest. I think Australia were always going to set slightly what you can call defensive fields if you like. I think they were no different really to Ben Stokes,” Paine said on SEN podcast ‘Whateley’.

Meanwhile, Stokes &amp; Co. backed their brand of cricket despite ending on the losing side in Edgbaston. The second Test kicks off on June 28, at Lord's, with Australia leading&nbsp;the five-match series 1-0.

Ashes: 'Stokes, England make some funky fields and suddenly it's genius' - Paine's remark after Edgbaston Test

Australia have maintained their dominance at the top in the ICC ODI rankings, released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday (May 11). After the latest update, which weights games completed prior to May 2022 at 50 per cent and subsequent matches at 100 per cent, the Men in Yellow hold the top spot with 118 rating points, two ahead of second-placed Pakistan.

Recently, Australia had conceded the top spot to Babar Azam-led Pakistan after the Men in Green took a 4-0 lead over New Zealand, at home, in the just-concluded five-match series. However, the one-time ODI champions could not hold onto the numero uno position for more than two days as they had to win the NZ series 5-0. They lost the series finale by 47 runs to let go of the first position.&nbsp;

Under-pressure David Warner was Wednesday spared the axe and included in Australia's squad for the first two Ashes Tests and the World Test Championship final, while all-rounder Mitchell Marsh earned a recall.

Veteran opener Warner is fighting to save his career after a lean run with the bat that had some questioning whether his time was over.

But the 36-year-old will head to England as part of a 17-man squad that also includes Josh Inglis as cover for wicketkeeper Alex Carey, and Marcus Harris and Matthew Renshaw as back-up batters.

After a terrific run in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in India, spinner Todd Murphy made the cut in Cricket Australia's (CA) expended 24-man list of centrally contracted players for the 2023-24 season. Murphy had a stunning debut series in the India-Australia Tests, in the subcontinent, and ended with 14 wickets at 25.21 including a seven-fer on debut in the Nagpur Test. "We have chosen a group of players we expect will form the majority of those two campaigns and we know that we will need a squad mentality to achieve success," national selector George Bailey said. Australia's central contract for 2023-24 season: Todd Murphy makes the cut in CA's expanded list

Glenn Maxwell has been part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) since the 2013 edition. He has represented the likes of Mumbai Indians (MI), Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) -- now known as Punjab Kings (PBKS) -- Delhi Daredevils (DD) -- now renamed as Delhi Capitals (DC) -- before moving to the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise in IPL 2021. While Maxwell had a disastrous run for PBKS in IPL 2020, he was roped in by the RCB franchise ahead of IPL 2021. The Australian star all-rounder repaid the faith shown by the RCB team management with a stellar season.

In IPL 2021, Maxwell&nbsp;scored 513 runs in 15 matches at a strike rate of&nbsp;144.10; one of the reasons for RCB reaching the playoffs. After such an impressive run, there were little doubts in anyone's mind that he won't be retained by the franchise. However, there were limited slots and abundance of talents in RCB's ranks ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction. Nonetheless, he was one of the three players retained -- along with Virat Kohli and Md Siraj -- before the auction. The all-rounder recently recalled his reaction on being retained by the RCB setup.

"You never know what’s gonna happen because it’s a big auction. And like, with how many people they were going to retain and we had, obviously, a couple of bowlers — Siraj, Harshal, Yuzi (Chahal), then AB, Virat, and those young Indian players, and all could have been retained at some stage. So to retain an overseas batter, sometimes isn’t the smartest move," Maxwell said on the RCB Podcast.

Maxwell added, "It seems straightforward, but in my head, there was obviously a lot more I had to go through. When I got the phone call that I was gonna be retained, I was pumped and couldn’t wait to stick around."

Having been bought by the franchise for INR 14.25 crore, in 2021,&nbsp;Maxwell has now become a vital part of RCB. In the previous edition, he returned with 301 runs in 13 games as RCB once again made it to the playoffs. He will aim for another memorable run in IPL 2023, starting on March 31.

When I got the phone call that I was gonna be retained, I was pumped and couldn’t wait to stick around." Having been bought by the franchise for INR 14.25 crore, in 2021, Maxwell has now become a vital part of RCB. In the previous edition, he returned with 301 runs in 13 games as RCB once again made it to the playoffs. He will aim for another memorable run in IPL 2023, starting on March 31. 'It isn't...' Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell recalls being retained by RCB ahead of IPL 2022 auction

Steve Smith is set to lead Australia in the fourth and final Test versus India as well, with regular skipper Pat Cummins to remain in Australia with his ailing mother. The Aussie speedster's mother Maria is ill with breast cancer and is in palliative care, as reported by Cricket Australia. Thus, Cummins had skipped the third and penultimate Test, in Indore, as well -- which the visitors won by nine wickets to keep the series alive at 2-1 -- and will now also miss the series decider in Ahmedabad, starting on March 09.

Under Smith, Australia produced a clinical performance in the third Test at the Holkar Stadium, Indore. Opting to bat first, Rohit Sharma-led India folded for a paltry 109 -- thanks to&nbsp;Matthew Kuhnemann's 5 for 16 -- before Australia only managed 197 but took a vital 88-run lead. In reply, India once again fell flat in their second essay; being dismissed for 163 in 60.3 overs. Chasing 76, Smith &amp; Co. chased down the target with nine wickets in hand in the morning session of Day 3.&nbsp;

After leading Australia to an emphatic win, Smith said after the game, "My time is done. It's Pat's team now. I've obviously been able to stand in this week, obviously in tough circumstances with Patty going home. Our thoughts are still with him back home."

"But India is a part of the world I love captaining ... it's probably my favourite place in the world to captain. India vs Australia, BGT 2022/23: Steve Smith set to lead in final Test in Pat Cummins' absence

The No. 1 ranked Australian Test side have been a pale shadow of themselves in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy versus hosts India. After the first two Tests, Pat Cummins &amp; Co. have already conceded an unassailable 2-0 lead to Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. and will be aiming to keep the series alive in the third and penultimate Test, which kicks off on March 01 in Indore.

Ahead of the third Test, former Australian skipper Ian Chappell has lashed out at the current Aussie line-up for their poor performances, raised questions on their preparations, shot and team selections. In his coloum for ESPNCricinfo, he wrote, "Sweeping regularly is not the answer to playing good spin bowling, and anyone who says so is talking through his hat."

<section>
Chappell further opined, "The odd player is very good at sweeping and should utilise the shot, but for the majority there are better ways. Any good spin bowler who makes the ball bounce is likely to expose the dangers in sweeping constantly. Australia prepared on special scarified pitches in Sydney and chose not to play a single tour game in India for the gruelling month-long series."

"You don't discover how to play good spin bowling later in life on a scarified Australian pitch just prior to a vital tour of India. You have to learn good footwork -- coming three paces out of your crease or retreating quickly onto the back foot -- at a young age," he mentioned.

'Australia's selection&nbsp;has been awfully inconsistent and&nbsp;irrational'

Chappell went on to blast the Australian team management for their lack of batting strategies on Indian tracks&nbsp;and raised eyebrows on the team selection for&nbsp;the first two Tests. "It should have been obvious in Australia's build-up what kinds of batting strategies needed to be used in India. The most beneficial are to watch the ball closely, more so than in Australia, and that there is a fraction more time than you think. Selectors can be fooled into thinking that playing spin bowling well in Australia automatically means success will follow on Indian pitches.

"That isn't so but if the method in Australia is a sound one, selectors should assume it could lead to success in India. Once a batter understands about the extra time on slightly slower Indian pitches, he can work the ball into a gap to collect precious runs. Those runs, especially early in an innings, when survival is treacherous, can frustrate even the best spinners, " said Chappell.

The ex-Aussie captain added, "Australia's selection on this tour has been awfully inconsistent and at times irrational. Getting selection right makes for an air of calm, which, along with effectively putting a stop to dressing-room tantrums, can aid team spirit.

"Like picking a well-balanced cricket team, good administrations should be a sensible combination of playing knowledge at the highest level along with sound business acumen so the game is well managed. The Australian cricket team is very good at many venues around the cricket world but alarm bells should have rung long ago about the trip to India."

Cummins won't lead the national side in the third Test as he remains in Australia for his ailing mother. In his absence, Steve Smith will take charge of the side and aim for a 2-1 scoreline after the end of the Indore Test to keep the series alive. Meanwhile another win for India, in Indore, will cement their spot in the ICC World Test Championship final (WTC).

Awfully inconsistent, irrational: Ex-Australia captain rips apart Pat Cummins & Co for poor show in India

Former Australia skipper Greg Chappell has slammed the team for their performance in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar trophy against India, saying that the team 'needed to play to their strength.' Writing for the Sydney Morning Herald, the Aussie great also termed dropping pacer Scott Boland from the second Test in Delhi as a mistake.

"Australia needed to play to their strengths to have a chance of winning this series. Spin bowling is not our strength. Picking spinners for the sake of it is not the way to success in India. We had to pick our best bowlers and trust them to do the job and back that with sensible batting, based on sound principles,” Chappell wrote.

The former India coach compared Australian team's performance after the first two Tests as punching themselves in the mouth. &nbsp;

"It was Mike Tyson who said in the lead-up to a fight with Evander Holyfield: Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth. My concern after watching the first two Tests is that the Australian team punched themselves in the mouth long before the first ball was even bowled,” Chappell wrote.

Australia lost the first Test in Nagpur by an innings and 132 runs, while got beaten by six wickets in the Delhi Test, both inside three days. In the second Test though, Australia gave themselves a fighting chance as it become a one-inning shootout after India conceded one-run lead in the first innings.

The visitors, however, collapsed dramatically as they lost eight wickets for a meagre 28 runs in the second innings and went from 85/2 to 113/10. There has been an inquest in the manner Australia folded out in the second innings in Delhi as most of the batters were out playing the sweep shot to Indian spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Ashwin.&nbsp;

The next Test of the series will be played from March 1 in Indore with the fourth and final Test scheduled to be played from March 9 in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

Former skipper Greg Chappell slams Australia for not playing to their strength

Australia are tottering in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) versus hosts India. After losing the first two Tests, they will be without regular captain Pat Cummins as the skipper will remain in Australia to look after his&nbsp;ailing mother whereas struggling opener David Warner too has returned home due to a hairline fracture on his elbow during the second Test in New Delhi.

After reaching Australia, Warner reacted to being out of the India Tests -- where he only managed 26&nbsp;runs in three outings.&nbsp;

"Sad to leave the tour injured and Not the memories that I wanted. Thanks to all the fans that turned up to all our games that we have played so far. Delhi did not go our way but two more games to go for the team and hopefully we can rebound quickly," said Warner on Instagram.

Warner never looked comfortable in the series and returned with scores of 1, 10 and 15. He will be hopeful to make a comeback for the three-match ODI series, which kicks off on March 17. After returning to his country, he opined on his Test career while interacting with the&nbsp;reporters at the Sydney Airport and&nbsp;said, "I've always said I'm playing to 2024; if the selectors feel that I'm not worthy of my spot (in Tests), then so be it, and I can push on to the white-ball stuff. I've got the next 12 months, a lot of cricket's ahead for the team and if I can keep scoring runs and putting my best foot forward for the team and I can help my spot, it'd be great for the team."

"It's easy pickings (for critics) when you're 36 going on 37. I've seen it before with the ex-players as well. So for me if I'm taking pressure off the rest of the other guys, and no one's worrying about the rest of the team, I'm happy to do that," he added.

Talking about the 2022/23 BGT, Australia will take on Rohit Sharma-led India in the third and penultimate Test, in Indore, with Steve Smith leading the side. The visitors have a herculean task to prevent a 4-0 whitewash.

Australia are tottering in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) versus hosts India. After losing the first two Tests, they will be without regular captain Pat Cummins as the skipper will remain in Australia to look after his ailing mother whereas struggling opener David Warner too has returned home due to a hairline fracture on his elbow during the second Test in New Delhi.

After reaching Australia, Warner reacted to being out of the India Tests -- where he only managed 26 runs in three outings. "Sad to leave the tour injured and Not the memories that I wanted. Thanks to all the fans that turned up to all our games that we have played so far. Delhi did not go our way but two more games to go for the team and hopefully we can rebound quickly," said Warner on Instagram. Ruled out of India Tests due to injury, David Warner says sad to leave, not the memories I wanted

Australia have been dealt yet another blow ahead of the third Test match in the ongoing Border Gavaskar trophy. Opener David Warner has been ruled out of the remainder of the series after suffering a hairline fracture during the second Test match in Delhi.&nbsp;

"David Warner has been ruled out of the Qantas test tour of India and will return home. Warner was struck on the elbow in the second Test in Delhi and sustained a hairline fracture," said Cricket Australia (CA) in a statement.&nbsp;

"After further assessment, he will require a period of rehabilitation which will preclude any further involvement in the remainder of the Test series."

Warner was substituted during the Delhi Test match after suffering a concussion, having taken a tricky Mohammed Siraj bouncer on the grille of the helmet. However, it was the injury, minutes before the bouncer that cut short his red-ball tour.&nbsp;

Warner was struck on the elbow by another short of good-length delivery. While it looked fairly innocuous at the time, the subsequent x-rays showed that the southpaw had suffered a hairline fracture.&nbsp;

Trouble mounts for Australia as David Warner exits the Test series against India

Former Australian captain Allan Border has said that Pat Cummins looked at sea during his first captaincy stint in the subcontinent. The legendary Australian cricketer believes Cummins was so worried about other things that he forgot to bowl himself during the Delhi Test.

Former Australian captain Allan Border has said that Pat Cummins looked at sea during his first captaincy stint in the subcontinent. The legendary Australian cricketer believes Cummins was so worried about other things that he forgot to bowl himself during the Delhi Test. "I just thought this is Pat's first real Test as a captain, the rest has been plain sailing, you go to the sub-continent and all of a sudden you get tested out in all sorts of areas," Border told SEN. "He's worried about lots of different things, he forgot about himself bowling I think. That's what can happen in those situations when your premier fast bowler is your captain." Read more: IND vs AUS: Disappointed with Delhi Test result, Pat Cummins urges players to review their performances Cummins only bowled 13 overs in the first innings of the Delhi Test while not opting to pick the ball in the second innings. Despite the Kotla pitch offering a fair bit of turn, the pacers were in the game throughout. Indian seamer Mohammed Shami was the pick of the bowlers as he snaffled four wickets in the first innings. Reflecting on the same, Border added, "There were opportunities when things were starting to go stray, particularly in the Indian first innings when we had them on the ropes and they formed a good partnership, a couple of blasts from him running in and bowling some short stuff for two or three overs." On the captaincy front, Cummins looked devoid of ideas at times as the Indian side used the home conditions to full advantage. Post the Delhi Test, Cummins has flown back to Australia due to personal commitments. The pacer is expected to join back the squad before the third Test. 'He forgot about himself': Allan Border says THIS Australian player got overawed by the occasion

Following India’s yet another statement-making win over Australia in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series, they have inched closer to sealing the direct qualification for the finals of the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC). As announced by the ICC earlier, the finals of the second edition of WTC will be played on a neutral venue - at the Oval in London this time from June 7th to 11th with 12th been kept as a reserve day. While both Australia and India were already among the favourites to play the summit clash, the result of this series, and the ones that are scheduled to happen elsewhere could determine the final two.

So, after winning the first two Tests convincingly, how can India still qualify for the finals of 2023 WTC. A win in the second Test in Delhi by six wickets led to jump in India’s point percentage from 61.66 to 64.06, whereas, Australia’s lead on the latest standings suffered a dent as their PCT has now lowered down to 66.67&nbsp;from 70.83.

This slip in their PCT means Australia cannot take things lightly and will have to fight out hard to avoid, a) a series whitewash against India, and b) hope for New Zealand to not lose their home two-match Test series against Sri Lanka – a combination of which could see them getting out of the top two in latest standings for the 2023 WTC.

However, for India to qualify for the finals of the World Test Championship, they just have to win one of the remaining two Tests. In one case if India wins the series 3-0 or 4-0, they will not only qualify for the finals, but will also top the standings. On the other hand, if India win the series 3-1, their PCT would be 61.92 which would be sufficient enough for them to face possibly Australia in the finals.

Meanwhile, in the worst-case scenario for the Rohit Sharma-led team, if Australia manages to win the remaining two Tests and the series is tied at 2-2, India can still qualify for the finals provided Sri Lanka drop points against New Zealand in their final Test series in this WTC cycle.

While both Australia and India were already among the favourites to play the summit clash, the result of this series, and the ones that are scheduled to happen elsewhere could determine the final two. So, after winning the first two Tests convincingly, how can India still qualify for the finals of 2023 WTC. A win in the second Test in Delhi by six wickets led to jump in India’s point percentage from 61.66 to 64.06, whereas, Australia’s lead on the latest standings suffered a dent as their PCT has now lowered down to 66.67 from 70.83. ALSO READ: IND vs AUS: Disappointed with Delhi Test result, Pat Cummins urges players to review their performances This slip in their PCT means Australia cannot take things lightly and will have to fight out hard to avoid, a) a series whitewash against India, and b) hope for New Zealand to not lose their home two-match Test series against Sri Lanka – a combination of which could see them getting out of the top two in latest standings for the 2023 WTC.

Mind games have begun ahead of the Border-Gavaskar trophy and it is former Australian players that are preparing the pitch. Adam Gilchrist, one of the finest wicketkeeper batters to have graced the sport in the last 20 years on Tuesday said Australia could outmuscle India in the upcoming series. Gilchrist compared the current squad to the one that won the Test series in India, way back in 2004. "I think they'll do it (win the series). I really do. I think they've got a squad and final XI that will have a lot of similarities to the team we rolled with in 2004," Gilchrist was quoted as saying by Fox sports. "So often teams go to India hoping to unveil some new spinner that's going to come in and adapt and bedazzle in India, it doesn't really happen." He said a defensive approach was required initially to be successful in Indian conditions. "Attack the stumps right from ball one. Swallow your pride a bit, be defensive to be aggressive...Start with one slip, start with a catching mid-wicket, put fielders out on the boundary to nullify the boundary option, but keep a couple of catchers in place, either at short cover or short mid-wicket - and just be patient." Gilchrist suggested that Australia go with three seamers alongside offspinner Nathon Lyon to achieve desired success in the sub-continental conditions. "What we tried to change with our mentality back then -- and I'd be interested to see if the Australians do it this time -- is don't go searching and just rolling spinners out there.
