<p>The 2003 World Cup final had a catastrophic effect on every Indian cricket fan. As disappointing as it was for every ardent&nbsp;fan of the nation, it made me -- back then, an 11-year-old kid -- fall madly in love with the sport. There was no turning back from there.</p>

<p>Before the 2003 debacle, I saw Team India win the NatWest Trophy. For me, 2004 is still vividly etched in my memory&nbsp;for India's historic tour of Pakistan whereas the coming years just added more memories. Thus, becoming a sports journalist has been on my bucket list since then. Obviously, the dream of representing India would have been much better. However, that bus&nbsp;sadly left due to&nbsp;sheer laziness during my college days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Come 2016, I got my first job. I officially entered the sports journalism industry. Growing up watching India win the home ODI World Cup&nbsp;in 2011 motivated me enough to cover the mega event in 2023 -- when the tournament returned to Indian shores. Come Oct 25 (Wednesday), that dream was&nbsp;fulfilled. I was part of the media box for the Australia versus Netherlands group stage tie at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.&nbsp;</p>

However, there was a collapse as the Aussies&nbsp;were reduced to 290-6 from 244-2. Still, there were enough overs in the bank for a Glenn Maxwell special. And boy, did he make it special!</p>

<p>Maxi slammed a 40-ball 100 --&nbsp;fastest ever in ODI World Cup --&nbsp;and ended with 106&nbsp;off 44; laced with 9 fours and 8 sixes at a strike rate of 240.91. His inning&nbsp;was filled with reverse hits, cuts, pulls and a reverse-sweep-scoop (yes, you read that right). It was an exhibition of T20-style batting including some audacious shots in all parts of the ground. <p>Glenn Maxwell smashed the fastest century in ODI World Cup history&nbsp;at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday (Oct 25) against the Netherlands, obliterating South Africa's Aiden Markram's record&nbsp;set earlier in the tournament. Maxwell reached the century in 40 balls after Netherlands all-rounder Bas de Leede served a beamer on the leg stump which was promptly deposited by the dasher over the long leg boundary.</p>

<p>Having come in to bat in the 40th over, not many would have predicted that Maxwell would reach his century but not only did he reach the milestone, he broke the record by a margin of nine&nbsp;balls. Maxwell was at his menacing best, pummeling and carting the bowlers to all parts of the park.</p>

<p>He brought his half-century in 26 balls before reaching the three-figure mark in another 14 deliveries. En route, the Australian smashed nine boundaries and eight maximums.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Pretty cooked all day: Maxwell&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Speaking after breaking the world record, Maxwell said he was not feeling well when he walked out to bat in the middle.</p>

<p>"I've been pretty cooked all day. Probably just cleared my head a bit to just go out and play. The situation when Davey and Greeny got out, I had to take it deep a little bit," said Maxwell.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Explaining the outrageous ramp shots that he played even when the Dutch bowlers were digging the ball into the pitch, Maxwell said he had "enough time to go after" them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Batting first, Australia were off to a sedate start as Mitchell Marsh perished in the fourth over. Steve Smith, walking in at no.3, joined forces with David Warner and the duo stitched a classy partnership before the former perished to a corker of a catch from Van der Merwe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Warner continued from there and reached his second consecutive century of the WC, sixth overall and showed he remains one of the top white ball batters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While wickets did fall in clump for the five-time champions in the middle, Maxwell's blitzkrieg ensured that Australia posted a mammoth 399 run total on the board.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Australian chief selector has locked in Travis Head’s batting position as the batter is all set to return to the side for the Netherlands clash on Wednesday (Oct 25) in Delhi. Head, who fractured his hand during the away ODIs against South Africa earlier, will land in India this weekend to join the Australian World Cup squad.</p>

<p>Head decided against surgery that would have taken another 10 weeks to recover. Upon healing from the broken left hand, Head received the fitness clearance certificate from the doctors and will now fly to India for the remainder of the tournament.</p>

<p>Speaking with the media, Bailey acknowledged Travis’ return to the side, admitting Head would bat at his usual position at the top of the order, replacing Marsh.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The lanky all-rounder, who scored a hundred against Pakistan in Bengaluru on his birthday, would now be demoted to number three, while Steve Smith to play at four.</p>

<p>"It can be a six to eight-week injury. He's ticked all the boxes in terms of the four-week scan, and the bone has healed, so that's all going well, and he's progressed really well through the week (since he started batting).</p>

<p>"But clearly the whole point of having him (in the WC squad) and carrying him to this point is not to then risk it by bringing him back early. So if it works out for that Dutch game, great. If it's a little bit further on, then that's okay," Bailey said.</p>

<p>Pakistan bowler Haris Rauf was shredded apart by Australian openers during the World Cup match in Bengaluru on Friday (Oct 20) afternoon. Put into bat first, the Australian batters came out swinging and smashed Rauf, one of the fastest bowlers going around in the cricketing circuit right now, for the third-most expensive over in World Cup history by a Pakistan bowler.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Called in to bowl as second-change, Rauf bowled the first ball wide outside off, allowing David Warner to slash it over point for a boundary to start off the proceedings. On the very next ball, Rauf attempted to overcompensate and darted the ball on pads which was promptly dispatched over the fine leg fence for a maximum, followed by a single.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Afterwards, Marsh took over the action and carted Rauf for three consecutive boundaries, deflating the Pakistan fielding unit as their premier bowler was toyed with in the first over.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Prior to Rauf, Abdul Razzaq and Shoaib Akhtar had conceded 30 and 28 runs respectively in the 2011 edition of the World Cup in the same game against New Zealand.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nathan Lyon is set to resume competitive cricket following his lengthy injury lay-off since the second Ashes Test this year. The Aussie veteran got sidelined for almost three months after suffering a calf injury during the Lord’s game. Ahead of his Marsh Cup return on Friday, Lyon admitted to struggling mentally during this period. His long-time trainer and friend, Tom Carter, believes Lyon is on the right track to recovery and ready for his second innings.</p>

<p>Although Lyon had penned his plans of winning an away series in both England and India, for which he has to be around till 2027, per the ICC’s FTP, Carter feels eyeing for next five years should be his goal, given how hardworking and determined Lyon is to return to playing for Australia.</p>

<p>"I've said that I want to win Test series in India and England. That's a massive driver. I know we're a while away, but there's no reason why I can't still chase that dream and be successful in India and England again," Lyon had said earlier.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Carter, who stood by Lyon during this dark hour, admitted the off-spinner dealt with shock and despair and felt helpless about missing out on playing away Ashes as he glued his eyes to TV for the remaining three Tests. Despite leading the Ashes 2-0 after the end of the second Test, Australia failed to win the series in England as they lost two of the three remaining matches.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"He's never been injured," Tom Carter - Lyon's long-time trainer, told cricket.com.au. "He was dealing with shock, then despair, and then he felt really helpless."</p>

<p>"I think he watched every ball and rode every moment in his living room," Carter added.</p>

<h2>'Time to reinvent himself'</h2>

<p>Carter said just like how England veterans James Anderson and Stuart Broad have had prolonged careers, with Anderson, 41, eyeing an away India series in January 2024, Lyon can also work on his fitness and reinvent himself.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"You see (Jimmy) Anderson and (Stuart) Broad do it (play into their late-30s and early-40s) from a fast-bowling perspective in England," Carter said.<br />

"You've got to reinvent yourself physically; you've got to challenge yourself with different stimulus. But I have no doubt that he's more than capable of doing that.</p>

<p>"That's what our next focus is; that capacity to play another five years. I'm really confident, because of the way he applies himself, that he'll be able to do that.</p>

<p>"I have no doubt that time will fly by and we'll be talking about him leading us to victory in India and England,” Carter added.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Lyon eyes return to the Australian side during the home Pakistan series.</p>

<p>The under-fire Australia Cricket Team received a boost with injured Travis Head declared fit to join the side in India for the World Cup 2023. Head, who suffered a fracture in his left hand during the away South Africa series, was out of action since but got picked in the final 15 to remain available from mid-way into the tournament. As per the latest reports, Head has resumed training in nets and will fly to India later this week.</p>

<p>Head had the cast removed last week and is facing throwdowns in the nets. Speaking to the media in Australia, Head said he is healing well but would still require a final clearance before joining the 14-man Australian CWC squad in India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, if everything goes according to the plan, Head would reach India in time for Australia’s clash against the Netherlands on October 25, although his selection would depend on his fitness and match practice.&nbsp;</p>

The under-fire Australia Cricket Team received a boost with injured Travis Head declared fit to join the side in India for the World Cup 2023. Head, who suffered a fracture in his left hand during the away South Africa series, was out of action since but got picked in the final 15 to remain available from mid-way into the tournament. As per the latest reports, Head has resumed training in nets and will fly to India later this week. Head had the cast removed last week and is facing throwdowns in the nets. Speaking to the media in Australia, Head said he is healing well but would still require a final clearance before joining the 14-man Australian CWC squad in India. However, if everything goes according to the plan, Head would reach India in time for Australia’s clash against the Netherlands on October 25, although his selection would depend on his fitness and match practice. "It's coming along well, and probably better than we hoped," Head told cricket.com.au. "When we decided not to go with surgery, which would have meant a ten-week recovery, we were told it would be a minimum of six weeks with the splint before we could look at playing again." <p>"Even with the ball, they are a bit standoffish, they are waiting for things to happen, and that can become contagious among the group as well.</p>

<p>"The last thing you want to do is start the tournament poorly because there's no way to get yourself back into it. It's been a tough start…two games where you say if we break even, win one lose one, we are okay with that, then it's a bit of a softer run home compared especially with India first up,” Finch noted.</p>

<p>Unlike before, Australia’s road to the World Cup had many obstacles, with the team first losing to South Africa (3-2) despite leading 2-0 at one stage.</p>

<p>The Pat Cummins-led side then lost the ODI series against India and entered the World Cup with five losses from six matches.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Finch added that playing so many games in the lead-up to the World Cup, including two practice matches and with management also wanting players to remain fit throughout, took a toll and reflected on their performances.</p>

<p>"The tone was set early on, and it hasn't recovered yet. They need a way to freshen up, mentally and physically, because it's been a gruelling lead-up with five ODIs in South Africa, three T20s, coming to India and playing three ODIs then two warm-up matches when they only had 11 fit players. One-day cricket, physically, takes quite a bit out of you,” Finch added.</p>

<h2>Finch backs Inglis’ selection</h2>

<p>What raised eyebrows against South Africa was the shock selection of Josh Inglis ahead of regular Alex Carey. When asked to explain this, Finch said he was not surprised by this call, claiming Carey’s form in ODIs heading into the CWC was a worry anyway.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Don't think there's any panic," Finch said. "If you look at the stats, Alex Carey's last 10 games, [there are] seven scores under 10. It just looks like he's been a little bit frantic when he's got the crease, there hasn't been a real pattern to the way he's gone about his innings.</p>

<p>"Think going into the warm-up games they were still confident he could come good, then to miss out in the first game to [Ravindra] Jadeja, a decent ball around the wicket, but you should be able to keep that out at least. It's a harsh selection, but there is some justification behind it,” the former Australia captain added.</p>

<p>Heinrich Klaasen slammed 174 off 83 balls to lead South Africa to a 164-run win in the fourth one-day international against Australia at SuperSport Park on Friday.</p>

<p>Klaasen shared an extraordinary fifth wicket partnership of 222 off only 94 balls with David Miller (82 not out) as South Africa piled up 416 for five, their fifth-highest total in one-day internationals, before bowling out Australia for 252.</p>

<p>"To be honest I can't remember the last part of the innings. I’ll have to go back and watch it tonight," said Klaasen, who&nbsp;smashed 13 fours and 13 sixes before being caught on the boundary off the last ball of the innings.</p>

<p>Former Australian Test cricket star&nbsp;Stuart&nbsp;MacGill&nbsp;has been arrested and charged for his alleged role in a commercial-scale cocaine deal, police said Friday. The retired leg-spinner came to the attention of detectives in April 2021, when he was allegedly kidnapped by a group of armed men outside his apartment in affluent northern Sydney.</p>

<p>The 52-year-old restaurateur told Australian radio network SEN last year that the men "stripped me naked, beat me up, threatened me and then just dumped me". Following a lengthy investigation into the incident, police have now alleged that&nbsp;MacGill's abduction was linked to his part in a drug deal.</p>

<p>Police said&nbsp;MacGill&nbsp;faced one count of "knowingly" taking part in the supply of a commercial quantity of a prohibited drug.&nbsp;MacGill&nbsp;was lauded as a talented bowler and played 44 Tests for Australia, but was unlucky that his career coincided with that of Shane Warne, ranked by many as the best spin bowler of all time.</p>

<p>However, if they do and, in the process, go past South Africa’s Net Run Rate, they will seal direct qualification. In that case, South Africa will have to play the Qualifiers next month in Zimbabwe to fight for a place in the 2023 World Cup.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Australia last toured South Africa in 2020 when they lost the ODI series 3-0. South Africa, in return, was supposed to travel Down Under for the slated white-ball series this year but decided to forfeit it, prioritising the launch of their newest domestic T20 league named SA20. As a result, points were deducted, and their chances of achieving direct qualification suffered a hit.</p>

<p>"It is the start of the international season for us, and it is a particularly important campaign in many respects because of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup which is taking place in India later in the year. We haven't qualified just yet, but we hope to be there and challenge the best in the world when the tournament is played in October and November," CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki said.</p>

<p>On how crucial this tour will be, keeping in mind the 2023 World Cup, Moseki said series like these against Australia only benefit South Africa.</p>

<p>"Games and tours like these against a formidable Australia side can only do good for our Proteas Men. It is also an opportunity for Coach Rob Walter and his team to keep building on the excellent work they have already done so far together. <p>Australia has dropped star Test batter Marnus Labuschagne in the 18-man preliminary squad for the bilateral ODIs (against South Africa and India) and ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 that begins in October. Regular ODI captain Pat Cummins, who fractured his left wrist during the fifth Ashes Test against England, will likely regain full fitness ahead of the mega event.</p>

<p>Cummins is said to be out for at least six weeks and will miss the three-match T20Is against South Africa starting August 30. He will join the side for the five One Dayers (from September 7). The right-arm seamer will try and play a few ODIs against India before the World Cup begins, with warm-up games starting in late September.</p>

<p>"Pat injured his left wrist diving in the field on the first day at The Oval," Chief Selector Bailey said. "He has an undisplaced fracture of his left radius, which requires six weeks of rehabilitation.</p>

<p>"We expect him to join the squad during the South African ODI Series. We view a period of enforced rest for Pat as a positive ahead of this important World Cup campaign. There are still a number of games he could play before the World Cup, which is more than enough for him to have a strong preparation," Bailey added.</p>

<p>While the 18-man preliminary squad includes most seasoned campaigners, New South Wales leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha and all-rounder Aaron Hardie are newcomers. Sangha, who has not featured for Australia on the international stage yet, travelled to New Zealand for the T20 series earlier. Hardie, on the other hand, a regular in Australia-A squads in the last 18 months, was picked in the T20I side for the South Africa series.</p>

<p>All-rounder Glenn Maxwell, also named in the list, will miss the South Africa ODIs due to paternity leave but will rejoin the side for three-match ODIs against India, starting September 22.&nbsp;</p>
