Ashes 2023: Bell claims 'Australia have more to work on' despite Cummins & Co.'s narrow win in Edgbaston

<p>England and Australia produced a humdinger of a match in the Ashes 2023 opener at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Opting to bat first, Ben Stokes-led England declared at 393 for 8, with Joe Root unbeaten on 118, whereas Australia posted 386 all-out courtesy of Usman Khawaja's 141. With a seven-run lead, England were dismissed for 273 but still gave a challenging 282-run target for the visitors, who rode on Khawaja's 65 and skipper Pat Cummins' 44 not out to win by two wickets in the final moments of the epic clash.</p>

<p>During the course of the game, many lauded Stokes-led England for their aggressive style of play. They declared their innings to put Australia to bat in the last few minutes of the opening day, to test the openers and create some chances, kept scoring at over 4, impressed one and all with their unorthodox field sets and smart bowling changes by Stokes.</p>

<p>On the other hand, Cummins received some criticism for his defensive field placements but the Aussie line-up trusted their own methods and didn't look completely out of sorts in front of England's Bazball approach. Eventually, Australia never allowed England to run away with the game and stayed alive to emerge on top by a whisker. Swallow your pride a bit, be defensive to be aggressive...Start with one slip, start with a catching mid-wicket, put fielders out on the boundary to nullify the boundary option, but keep a couple of catchers in place,&nbsp;either at short cover or short mid-wicket - and just be patient."</p>

<p>Gilchrist suggested that Australia go with three seamers alongside offspinner Nathon Lyon to achieve desired success in the&nbsp;sub-continental conditions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Thursday (January 05), Steve Smith started 2023 with a bang by slamming yet another hundred in the purest format during Day 2 of the third and final Test between Australia and South Africa, at the SCG, Sydney. In the second day's play of the New Year's Test, Smith and Usman Khawaja were going strong and the former completed his 30th Test ton to surpass Sir Don Bradman's tally (29).</p>

<p>Bradman ended his career with a total of 29 Test centuries for the Aussies, in 80 innings of 52 Test matches. Smith, on the other hand, surpassed his tally&nbsp;in his 162nd inning in his 92nd Test. The former Aussie captain is now also the joint-third on the list of leading century-makers for Australia in whites. Former captains Ricky Ponting (41) and Steve Waugh (32) lead the list with Smith and&nbsp;former opening batter Matthew Hayden with&nbsp;30 centuries apiece. Smith will aim to go past Waugh's tally during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in India from next month, and narrow&nbsp;the gap with Ponting.</p>

<p>En route to his special ton at his home ground, Smith also went past&nbsp;both Michael Clarke and Hayden to become the fourth-leading run scorer for Australia in Tests. The 33-year-old&nbsp;is now only behind&nbsp;Ponting (13,378), Allan Border (11,174), and Steve Waugh (10,927),&nbsp;with his tally reading&nbsp;8,647 following his 104 in the ongoing Test.</p>

<p>Smith stitched a mammoth 209-run third-wicket stand with Khawaja before falling soon after reaching the triple-figure mark. On Thursday (January 05), Steve Smith started 2023 with a bang by slamming yet another hundred in the purest format during Day 2 of the third and final Test between Australia and South Africa, at the SCG, Sydney. In the second day's play of the New Year's Test, Smith and Usman Khawaja were going strong and the former completed his 30th Test ton to surpass Sir Don Bradman's tally (29). Bradman ended his career with a total of 29 Test centuries for the Aussies, in 80 innings of 52 Test matches. Smith, on the other hand, surpassed his tally in his 162nd inning in his 92nd Test. The former Aussie captain is now also the joint-third on the list of leading century-makers for Australia in whites. Former captains Ricky Ponting (41) and Steve Waugh (32) lead the list with Smith and former opening batter Matthew Hayden with 30 centuries apiece. Smith will aim to go past Waugh's tally during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in India from next month, and narrow the gap with Ponting. En route to his special ton at his home ground, Smith also went past both Michael Clarke and Hayden to become the fourth-leading run scorer for Australia in Tests. The 33-year-old is now only behind Ponting (13,378), Allan Border (11,174), and Steve Waugh (10,927), with his tally reading 8,647 following his 104 in the ongoing Test. After his dismissal, Khawaja is leading Australia's charge and is nearing the 200-run mark with the hosts set to post a big score on the board after opting to bat first. It is to be noted that Pat Cummins-led Australia already have a 2-0 lead in the three-match series and another win will help them seal a spot in the ICC World Test Championship final, to be held in June.

"You see a lot of reverse sweeps, paddle shots and sweeps, all of these new strokes using their feet. I think that has revolutionised the way we look at cricket in the subcontinent. IPL has helped a lot in terms of exposure as well," Sangakkara said on Star Sports.</p>

<p>He had been averaging a paltry 20.61 this year and the South African pace battery found it extremely easy to get past his defences in the first Test match.</p>

<p>The pressure also piled on after off-field controversies forced&nbsp;Warner to take a stern stance in public to protect his family.&nbsp;</p>
