The T20 World Cup 2022 edition is set to get underway on October 16. While all the major teams are finalishing their team combination. the lowly-ranked sides are set to lock horns in the qualifying round which kicks off on Sunday. The qualifiers will see previous winners West Indies (two-time champions) and Sri Lanka (who won the elusive cup in 2014) as they will fight hard with the other teams to book a place in the main draw of the competition, which starts on October 22.

Ahead of the qualifiers, Universe Boss Chris Gayle made a bold claim. Speaking to Dainik Jagran, the 43-year-old predicted the T20 World Cup finalists. He said, "I think there could be a final match between West Indies and Australia. Yes, it is definitely that the players who are included in the West Indies team are talented and can prove to be dangerous for any team. As everyone knows it is just a matter of adapting your strategy in the right way on match day. I hope the team plays well," Gayle added.

Prize money for T20 World Cup: Full list out! Winner to walk away with a WHOPPING sum

Jasprit Bumrah stole the thunder on his return to international cricket after a long break due to an injury. The Indian pacer made his comeback in the second T20I against Australia at the Vidarbha Cricket Stadium in Nagpur on Friday and bowled a sensational yorker to clean up Aaron Finch in the 5th over of the rain-affected contest.

Bumrah had to spend a couple of months on the sidelines due to a back injury. He had missed the Asia Cup 2022 and was not part of the playing XI in the first T20I against Australia earlier this week. However, the pace returned in place of Umesh Yadav on Friday and made an instant impact.

In the very first over he bowled in the game, Bumrah produced an unpayable yorker which bamboozled Finch. It was an incredible delivery from the Indian fast bowler and the Australian skipper had no answers as his stumps were rattled to send him packing.

Australia's T20I skipper Aaron Finch has hailed Virat Kohli as one of the greatest batters of all time ahead of the T20I series against India. Australia will lock horns with hosts India in a three-match T20I series starting on Tuesday (September 20).

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the first T20I between the two top teams in Mohali, Aussie skipper Finch said it will take a brave person to write off someone like Kohli, who has been on top of his game for a number of years now. One of the best batters in the world at present, Kohli had shut down his critics with his performances at the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022.

The Indian batter was under fire heading into the Asia Cup having faced massive criticism over his slump in form. He had gone without scoring an international century for nearly three years but managed to bounce back in style. Kohli rediscovered his form and went on to bring an end to his long-standing wait for his 71st international century.

Kohli ended the tournament as the highest run-getter for India with 276 runs from five matches at a brilliant average of 92. He also joined Ricky Ponting at the second spot on the list of batters with the highest number of centuries in international cricket and now lies behind only the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 100 international tons.

''Particularly in T20 cricket, he's someone who has developed and grown his game over such a long period that you always plan and prepare the best when you're coming up against him. He is super and has 71 international centuries. That's just ridiculous,'' added the Australian skipper.

71 international centuries is ridiculous, will take a brave man to write Virat Kohli off: Aaron Finch

Aaron Finch announced his ODI retirement during Australia's home series versus New Zealand. The series finale became his last-ever appearance in the 50-over format, ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Ahead of Australia's three-match T20I series opener versus hosts India, former Aussie skipper and two-time ODI World Cup-winning captain Ricky Ponting has named his choice as Finch's successor in the shorter format.

Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, David Warner are among the contenders with the likes of Alex Carey, Glenn Maxwell, etc. also having a lot of experience under their belt to take up the role. "I think it’ll be Pat Cummins, to be honest," Ponting told host Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review. "I know he doesn’t play all the ODIs for obvious reasons, because his workload in Test cricket has been, like all the fast bowlers, very high in the last few years. I know they are very conscious of making sure that they’ve got Cummins, (Josh) Hazlewood and (Mitchell) Starc 100 percent fit and healthy for the big Test series to come around. But look, I'd be surprised if it wasn’t Pat Cummins," he opined.

ALSO READ | Mohammed Shami out of Australia T20 series due to COVID19, likely to be replaced by Umesh Yadav

On Smith's chances and Warner's name being discussed despite what happened in the Cape Town Test in early 2018 (with them being involved in the sandpaper gate fiasco), Ponting stated, "I’m just basing this on what’s happened with Steve Smith he is now the Test vice-captain again, having been the captain and really at the center of the whole controversy in Cape Town. He is now the Test vice-captain, which means obviously that if Pat Cummins ever misses a Test, then Steve Smith is going to be the captain of Australia again in Test match cricket."

"So, if that’s the case, and all being even and reasonably fair, then I think it would be OK, as far as I’m concerned, for David Warner to have his name (in the ring). Not saying that they have to make him captain, but he should be able to be in the conversation," the Delhi Capitals' head coach asserted.

The 47-year-old Punter also opened up on Finch's decision and said, "I wasn’t surprised actually. I sort of personally felt that he was probably one game away or one failure away from getting dropped anyway. That’s how bad his last 12 months have been in one-day international cricket. I think it was the right time. I actually thought it was really noble, what he said as well, that stepping down when he did, it gives the next captain a reasonable time leading getting himself and his team ready for the next World Cup.

"I was afforded a similar thing as well when I took over the captaincy, and when I stood down and Michael Clarke took over, I was very aware of what was coming up. I wanted to give the next captain a very good run into the next big tournament that they played," he signed off.

Finch retired from ODIs with 5,406 runs in 146 matches, averaging 38.89 along with 17 centuries.

ALSO READ | Mohammed Shami out of Australia T20 series due to COVID19, likely to be replaced by Umesh Yadav On Smith's chances and Warner's name being discussed despite what happened in the Cape Town Test in early 2018 (with them being involved in the sandpaper gate fiasco), Ponting stated, "I’m just basing this on what’s happened with Steve Smith he is now the Test vice-captain again, having been the captain and really at the center of the whole controversy in Cape Town. He is now the Test vice-captain, which means obviously that if Pat Cummins ever misses a Test, then Steve Smith is going to be the captain of Australia again in Test match cricket." "So, if that’s the case, and all being even and reasonably fair, then I think it would be OK, as far as I’m concerned, for David Warner to have his name (in the ring). Not saying that they have to make him captain, but he should be able to be in the conversation," the Delhi Capitals' head coach asserted. ALSO READ | People stay quiet thinking they cannot criticise India: Ex-Pakistan captain on BCCI's growing influence The 47-year-old Punter also opened up on Finch's decision and said, "I wasn’t surprised actually.

Star Australia batter David Warner said that he still regards captaincy roles as a privilege and is ready to talk to Cricket Australia (CA) about ending his lifetime leadership ban imposed on him for his part in the ball-tampering incident. After Australia skipper Aaron Finch announced his retirement from the ODI format on Sunday, who will captain the ODI team in the future is the burning question on everyone`s mind. On the third day of the match, Cameron Bancroft was caught on camera trying to alter the condition of the ball.

After the conclusion of the third day, Bancroft and then Australian skipper Steve Smith admitted that they cheated in trying to tamper with the ball. Warner`s involvement in the act was also confirmed. Cricket Australia handed a one-year ban to both Smith and Warner, while Bancroft was given a nine-month suspension."The man next to me is the key, he`s the Test captain. I`m sure he gets the first opportunity," Sydney Morning Herald quoted Warner as saying. "My phone`s here [if CA want to call for a talk about leadership]. What`s done is done in the past. The good thing is there is a new board that has come along. I`m always happy to sit down and have a chat and talk about anything they need to talk about. I`m just happy, enjoying my cricket and putting my best foot forward for the team," said Warner. "Any opportunity you get asked captain, it`s a privilege. For my circumstances, that`s in Cricket Australia`s hands. I can only concentrate on what I have to do and that`s using the bat and trying to score as many runs as I can," he added. 'Will never forget this trip': David Warner shares heartfelt post for Sri Lanka amid economic crisis, protests

Sri Lankans found some joy amid agony as the Dimuth Karunaratne-led team defeated Australia in the 2nd Test in Galle on Monday to draw the two-match Test series 1-1. Amid massive anti-government protests in the country and an acute shortage of resources due to the economic crisis, the Sri Lankan cricket team produced an excellent performance with the bat and ball to beat Australia by an innings and 39 runs in the second Test.

Despite the brilliant performance from the hosts, the second Test was overshadowed by protests across the nation. Protestors had flooded Sri Lankan president Gotabaya Rajapaksa's residence in Colombo as he was spotted feeling the country. The anti-government protests were staged amidst Sri Lanka dealing with one of its worst-ever economic crises.

Following the conclusion of the second Test in Galle, Australian Test captain Pat Cummins spoke about the protests in Sri Lanka and sympathised with the people of the country, who are facing a tough time. Cummins revealed he and some other players spoke to some of the staff at their hotel and drivers who told them how they have been surviving by eating on alternate days to ensure they can feed their kids.

India missed out on a chance to register an elusive T20I series win over South Africa at home after the 5th and final T20I between the two sides was washed out due to rain on Sunday. With the game in Bengaluru getting called off due to persistent rain, the series ended in a 2-2 draw. India, who had lost the first two matches of the series, won the next two games on the trot to level the series 2-2 as the five-match rubber ended in a stalemate.

India script history, break Australia's impressive T20I record after South Africa series ends in 2-2 draw

India and Australia were engaged in a high-voltage four-match Test series Down Under in 2020/21. After Virat Kohli-led India lost the opening Test, in Adelaide, by eight wickets -- being dismissed for a paltry 36 in the second essay -- many thought it would all go downhill for the visitors from thereon.

With no Kohli for the remainder of the series, the onus fell on stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane. India not only levelled the series in the second Test, at the MCG, Melbourne, they managed to secure a draw form the jaws of defeat in the third and penultimate match, in Sydney, before winning the series decider in style at The Gabba, Brisbane.

There were plenty of eye-catching moments in the series, including Rishabh Pant's counterattack, Cheteshwar Pujara's rocksolid presence, R Ashwin-Hanuma Vihari's blockathon, Md Siraj battling racial abuse to shine with the ball, sledging, etc. Recently, Ashwin recalled the intense verbal spat with then Aussie Test captain Tim Paine during the last session of the SCG Test.

During Ashwin-Vihari's unbroken 62-run sixth-wicket stand, keeper-captain Paine tried to distract the wily spin all-rounder as hosts were eyeing a win in defence of 407. The two Indian batters had joined in with the score 272-5 and, hence, had more than a session to play for a draw. With them going well, captain Paine tried to resort to sledging. He told Ashwin, "can't wait to get him to the Gabba". To this, the 35-year-old said, "can't wait to take him to India which would be his last series".

Recently, Ashwin spilled the beans on his statement. "I think Vihari will remember why I said that as well. Because we had a discussion on the way Tim Paine was batting through the series. I kept telling these guys and we got a very different sort of a short leg position, which was forward short leg and then we usually have a leg slip. We had a chat... Rahane, myself, Vihari and we said, 'Pujara will generally stand at leg slip but this guy won't stand with the helmet. Let's put him somewhere else and get this guy under the lid'," Ashwin said during the trailer launch of the just-released docu-series “Bandon Mein Tha Dum” (i.e. a celebration of India's famous Test series triumph over the Aussies during the 2020/21 tour).

"We had this conversation and parked him there in a very awkward position and he (Paine) actually nicked off there. We had a celebration and I told Vihari, 'This guy better not come to India. If he actually comes to India, he will be going there every single time. At the end of the day, he was having a go at us when we were batting and it just came out of my mind because we had a conversation like that. It was very instantaneous," he further added.

Ashwin countered by saying, “Tell me when you’re done". "I’ll talk all day, mate. Wait until you get to the Gabba, pal,” Paine responded.
Captain Dasun Shanaka`s quickfire knock (54 not off 25) helped Sri Lanka beat Australia by four wickets in the third T20I and avoid a clean sweep in the three-match series at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, here on Saturday. However, Aaron Finch led Australia, who won the first two matches, took home the series 2-1. After winning their third toss in a row, Australia opted to bat first and included Josh Inglis in place of Mitchell Marsh, who was out with a minor calf strain.

David Warner was slow to get off the blocks for Australia but Finch made up for his partner`s slow start. He welcomed Dushmantha Chameera into the bowling with two fours in his first over and dished out the same treatment to Maheesh Theekshana in his next.

The change of ends didn`t help Chameera, though it did with Theekshana. Finch and Warner accumulated a boundary each in the penultimate over of the Powerplay but the spinner broke through for his side, ending the Aussie skipper`s entertaining knock of 29 from 20 balls.

Maxwell sent the ball into the stands off his second ball while Warner broke loose after the end of fielding restrictions. The three overs after the Powerplay fetched 33 runs and it looked like Australia were going to set a massive total for Sri Lanka to chase down but the hosts were not going down without a fight.

Wanindu Hasaranga got the big wicket of Maxwell, who picked the googly but failed to gain the elevation for a maximum. Off the very next ball, DRS came to Sri Lanka`s rescue as Theekshana trapped Warner in front of the stumps for 39. Inglis was run-out for a first-ball duck, making it three wickets in three balls for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka tightened the screws in the middle overs, with overs 9-15 accounting for three wickets while giving away only one boundary. Marcus Stoinis took on Praveen Jayawickrama with a six and two boundaries but the spinner had the last laugh off the final ball of the over.

Chasing a challenging target, Sri Lanka started with a bang, getting 11 runs off the first over. They kept the scorecard ticking with Danushka Gunathilaka getting in some good shots.

The opening partnership of 25 was broken at the beginning of the fourth over with Josh Hazlewood removing Gunathilaka for 15. However, Charith Asalanka kept up the scoring rate and along with Pathum Nissanka helped bring up Sri Lanka`s fifty with a four on the first ball of the seventh over. His resistance ended when Stoinis got him for 26, breaking the fledgling 42-run stand.

At the halfway mark, Sri Lanka needed 100 more to win. Stoinis got Nissanka in the 11th over and Bhanuka Rajapaksa fell to Ashton Agar two overs later. Hazlewood got Kusal Mendis in the over after that and Jhye Richardson brought the end to Hasaranga`s patchy innings as Sri Lanka slipped to 108/6 in the 16th over. But, Shanaka captain`s knock turned the game on its head.

With 59 needed in the final three overs, the hosts had a tough task ahead of themselves. But Shanaka, refusing to give up, put up a brilliant display of batting, taking the Australia bowlers to the cleaners.

Justin Langer did a reasonably good job as the Australian men's cricket team's head coach from early 2018 to 2022. Under Langer, Australia revamped post the infamous ball-tampering saga and went onto draw the Ashes 2019, reach the semi-finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup, dominated at home versus Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Pakistan and won the Ashes 2021/22 and last year's T20 World Cup, in the UAE.

However, he stepped down as the head coach in February 2022 after reports started flowing in that his leadership style was 'too intense' for the national players (especially the younger brigade). Recently, the former opener opined on the criticism and said that he will 'never ever apologise' for his methods as a coach.

"It's really ironic, well not ironic, but it's the way of the world, I guess. On finishing with the Australian team, there was a talk I was too serious, too intense for some of the younger players. But that's what I learned. There's a famous incident where in the last Test (against India in Brisbane, 2021) I told Marnus Labuschagne not to walk out with a toasted ham and cheese sandwich in his hand, and it became headlines," Langer told Kim Beazley, Governor of Western Australia, in an interview.

"You imagine Allan Border or Steve Waugh letting us ... it would not happen because we were walking out to battle and representing our country. We were walking out to win and make Australians proud of what we were doing, and I will never, ever apologise for that.

Matthew Hayden recently recalled his fondest memories of his former Australian teammate Andrew Symonds, who passed away on Saturday (May 14) after a tragic car crash in Queensland, Australia. Symonds was driving his car when it got off the road and rolled over resulting in serious injuries to the former Aussie all-rounder.

Hayden, who shared the dressing room with Symonds for a number of years while playing for Australia, recalled a Test match between England and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) when he slammed a brilliant knock of 156 runs. Hayden revealed Symonds, who was often labelled as a white-ball specialist, always wanted to be a Test cricketer.

“My one beautiful memory of Symonds was when he leapt into my arms at the MCG because he always wanted to be known not just as a white-ball specialist but as a Test cricketer. To see him score those runs at the Boxing Day Test in front of 90,000 people," Hayden said while speaking on Star Sports.

"I've still got a crushing injury from when he landed on top of my head with his hands elated in the heaven. His mother, father, brother, sister so proudly recognised on that day what a special human being he was,” he added.

The cricket fraternity was left mourning as the news of former Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds' tragic demise emerged. Symonds died in a tragic car crash in Queensland, Australia on Saturday (May 14). His car went off the road and rolled over while he was driving resulting in grave injuries to the former cricketer, who succumbed to death. Australian cricket was yet to recover from the shock demise of the legendary Shane Warne and Rod Marsh but they lost another one of its heroes on Saturday. Marsh had passed away aged 74 in Marsh this year before Warne breathed his last after suffering a heart attack while holidaying in Thailand in the same month. While Warne's last social media post was on Marsh's demise on Twitter, Symonds' last Instagram post was a tribute to his close friend Warne after his death. "Devastated, I’m hoping this is all a bad dream I just can’t get my head around never seeing you again. Love to all the Warne family I’m speechless," Symonds wrote in an Instagram post in March this year.
Former Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds recently recalled how his huge contract in the Indian Premier League (IPL) strained his relationship with teammate Michael Clarke. Symonds revealed he used to share a great bond with Clarke but the relationship between the duo went downhill after the inception of IPL in 2008.

Symonds was the second-most expensive player in the IPL 2008 auction where he was roped in by now-defunct Deccan Chargers for USD 1.35 million at the time. His price was only behind MS Dhoni, who was sold to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the inaugural edition of the tournament.

Symonds was one of the star players bought by Deccan Chargers, who had also signed the likes of Adam Gilchrist, VVS Laxman and Shahid Afridi among others. The former Australian all-rounder believes jealousy cropped up in his relationship with Clarke after he was sold for a big amount at the IPL 2008 auction which strained their bond.

“We became close. When he (Clarke) came into the side, I used to bat with him a lot. So when he came into the side, I really looked after him. That built a bond,” Symonds was quoted as saying on the Brett Lee podcast.

“Matthew Hayden said to me — when the IPL started, I got a pretty penny to go and play in the IPL — he identified it as there was a bit of jealousy that potentially came into the relationship (with Clarke) there," added the former Aussie all-rounder.
