Andrew McDonald has been appointed head coach of Australia in all three formats for the next four years after overseeing their test series victory in Pakistan in a caretaker role.

McDonald had served as an assistant under Justin Langer since 2019 and took the reins in Pakistan after Langer declined the offer of a short-term contract extension and resigned.

The 40-year-old former test all-rounder had been widely expected to take the head coach role on a permanent basis.

"We interviewed several excellent candidates for this role, which is one of the most important in Australian sport," CA boss Nick Hockley said.

"Andrew has already shown he is an outstanding head coach and the vision he outlined for the role during the appointment process was both impressive and exciting, making him our clear choice."

McDonald will lead Australia through a busy year which includes test tours of Sri Lanka and India, and the T20 side`s World Cup defence on home soil.

"The journey so far has been particularly pleasing, and I am honoured to be given this incredible opportunity for what is an exciting period ahead," McDonald said.

McDonald, who expressed concerns in February about the workload of coaching in all formats, will be given the option of skipping certain white ball series to rest.

"I think the great challenge for coaches and players is to manage your workload across the four years, being my term at the moment," he told reporters at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday.

"But I`d like to think that I`ve got coaching staff around that can step up.

PakvsAus: When and where to watch Pakistan vs Australia 1st T20I - IST time and streaming details

Babar Azam left the commentators and fans on social media in splits as he celebrated his century while still batting on 99 during the 2nd ODI between Pakistan and Australia on Friday. Chasing a massive target of 349 runs, Pakistan rode on centuries from Babar and Imam-ul-Haq to win the game by six wickets and level the three-match series 1-1.

During Pakistan's run-chase, Babar was seen celebrating passionately on the third ball of the 41st over when he thought he had completed his 15th ODI ton. However, there were no cheers from the crowd as the Pakistan skipper didn't realise he was still one run short of completing his century.

Babar was still on 99 when he hilariously ended up celebrating his hundred leaving the commentators in splits. The Pakistan captain later realised his error in judgement and celebrated once again when he completed his century in the same over. The incident left even the players in splits and Babar too was spotted smiling over the gaffe.

It was a brilliant batting display from Pakistan during the run-chase as the hosts bounced back to winning ways in the second ODI after losing the series-opener by 88 runs earlier this week. Openers Fakhar Zaman (67) and Imam (106) got Pakistan off to a strong start with a 118-run partnership for the first wicket.

Quick bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah picked up two wickets apiece on Monday to lead Pakistan's inspired performance against Australia on the first day of the deciding third and final test in Lahore.

Afridi, 21, did the early damage, striking twice in his second over to dismiss opener David Warner for seven and No. 3 Marnus Labuschagne before he had scored, to reduce Australia to 8-2 after they won the toss and opted to bat.

Naseem, 19, drafted into the Pakistan side in place of all-rounder Faheem Ashraf, hurt the tourists in the final session, dismissing a well-set Steve Smith for 59 and Travis Head for 26 as Australia reached 232-5 at close.

All-rounder Cameron Green was unbeaten on 20 for Australia with wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey eight not out.

After their shaky start, it was opener Usman Khawaja who led Australia's fightback with a resilient 91, adding to scores of 97, 160 and 44 not out in his last three innings in his country of birth.

The left-handed Khawaja, who added 136 for the third wicket with Smith, appeared set for his 12th test hundred before Pakistan captain Babar Azam completed a one-handed catch at slip off spinner Sajid Khan.

Khawaja said some deliveries from the spinners were already gripping and turning and he felt a first-innings total of close to 350 would be good for Australia.

"This one (wicket) is probably some of the toughest to score runs on," the 35-year-old told reporters, adding that he physically struggled during his knock on a hot day.

FIRST LAHORE TEST SINCE 2009 ATTACK

Smith, Australia`s batting mainstay, completed his third successive half-century before he was out leg before wicket to a straight delivery from Naseem.

The first two tests of the series -- the first between the sides in Pakistan since 1998 -- were drawn.

"The pitch was a bit slow and also kept a bit low," Naseem said. "Our first target is to dismiss Australia under 300. I think we will get a result on this pitch."

Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium was hosting a test match for the first time since the 2009 attack by gunmen on a bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team.

After left-armer Afridi's two early wickets, Australia could have been in even deeper trouble but Pakistan failed to capitalise on chances offered by Khawaja and Smith.

Looking to dominate left-arm spinner Nauman Ali from the onset, Khawaja, on 12, flashed hard at a full-pitched delivery but the edge flew under the hands of Babar Azam in the lone slip position.

On the next delivery, Nauman failed to hold a straightforward return catch from Smith, who was on 19. Off-spinner Sajid also spilled a return catch off Head when he was on seven.

There is a lot of action taking place in the longest format of the game and, hence, leading to rapid changes in the points table of the second cycle of the ICC World Test Championship. After Babar Azam-led Pakistan's riveting draw versus Australia in the second and penultimate Test, in Karachi, there have been some changes in the overall standings.

Talking about the second Test, Pat Cummins-led Australia rode on Marnus Labuschagne's 160 to post 556-9 decl. after opting to bat first at the National Stadium, Karachi. In reply, Pakistan fell flat for 148, conceding a whopping 408-run lead in the process. Despite the humongous lead conceded, Babar-led Pakistan managed to draw the Test while chasing 506 in the fourth and final innings. Babar's 196 and Mohammad Rizwan's 104 not out led the home side to 443-7 when both sides settled for a draw on the final day's play. Following the enthralling battle, Australia and Pakistan remain at the top two positions, respectively, but there are some changes in PCT (i.e. Points won by a team / Points contested * 100).

After the Karachi Test, Pakistan skipper Babar said at the post-match presentation, "The plan was to bat session-by-session and build partnerships. It was a team effort, as others (Shafique and Rizwan) chipped in with useful contributions too. We took the onus and the main focus was to build partnerships right throughout the day. Rizwan was outstanding as he saved the Test for us eventually. We wanted to continue to bat in the same way (after the tea break) and we tried to be positive and play our shots. The team needed this knock, so I tried to bat for as long as I could."

Meanwhile, Cummins stated, "I think so, I think we had enough overs, it was a pretty good wicket even on day 4 and day 5. We created a few chances, but we failed to grab them. Mitch Swepson was fantastic on debut, his figures don't do justice to the way he bowled. Nathan was impressive towards the end, as he always does on day 5. For an Australian team to bat over two days at the start of a Test match, I don't think we've done that for a long time. Lots of positives from this match and so far in the series. The way we batted was fantastic, the way we hunted and took those wickets on day 3 with reverse swing, that was brilliant as well. And we were always ahead in the game, so really proud of the boys."

More changes are expected in the WTC points table with the conclusion of the Pakistan-Australia Tests and the ongoing second and penultimate Test between hosts West Indies and England.

Updated ICC World Test Championship points table after Pakistan's riveting draw vs Australia

Babar Azam's 196 and Mohammad Rizwan's 104* helped Pakistan prevent Australia from registering a memorable win in the second and penultimate Test at the National Stadium, Karachi on Wednesday (March 16). Babar's century had set up the match at stumps on Day 4, with Pakistan 192-2 in pursuit of a mammoth 506-run target.

Babar carried on from where he had left, on the penultimate day, when he came out to bat on Day Five. The right-hander showed grit, character, class and patience to take his side to a hard-earned draw with an impressive and career-best 196-run knock. While he fell with in excess of 12 overs to go in the day's play, Md Rizwan rescued the hosts and denied Pat Cummins & Co. from taking a 1-0 lead.

Such was Babar's innings that his knock was studded with 21 fours and a six, playing as many as 425 deliveries. Thus, he became the first Pakistani batter to play 400-plus deliveries in the fourth innings along with achieving another huge feat. Courtesy his 196, Babar now has the highest score by a captain in the fourth innings of a Test match. He surpassed England's Michael Artherton's 185, versus South Africa in 1995, to attain the historic record. Before him, Younis Khan held the record for the highest score by a Pakistan skipper in the final innings (107 versus India in 2007).

The first instance came during England's timeless Test in Durban, versus South Africa, in 1939. That match went on for as many as 10 days and had to be stopped as the English team would've missed the boat for home. Back then, England were 654/5 in chase of 696 in 218.2 overs (1,746) when the match ended in a draw.

Babar Azam-led Pakistan become second team to achieve historic feat after drawn Test vs Australia

Former Pakistan captain Waqar Younis has slammed Babar Azam & Co. for their 'ridiculous' tactics in the ongoing second Test against Australia at the National Stadium in Karachi. Australia have dominated Pakistan so far in the second Test as the visitors have already crossed the 400-run mark in their first innings after a brilliant century from Usman Khawaja.

The Pakistan-born Australian opener played a sublime knock of 160 runs off 369 deliveries laced with 15 fours and a solitary six to set the stage for a big total for his side. Khawaja was well complimented by the likes of Steve Smith (72) and Alex Carey, who also notched up a half-century is currently unbeaten out in the middle.

As Pakistan bowlers struggled to take wickets on Day and Day 2 of the second Test in Karachi, legendary pacer Younis questioned the hosts' tactics. While speaking on commentary, Younis said it felt like Pakistan were playing for a draw right from Day 1 of the second Test and that their tactics have been 'ridiculous'.

"The tactics I'm seeing at the moment is like we're looking for a draw on the first day. It's ridiculous," Younis said on commentary as he slammed Pakistan.

Khawaja and other Aussie batters dominated the proceedings on Day 1 of the Karachi Test as the left-hander's hundred guided the visitors to 251/3 at stumps. Khawaja continued from where he had left on Day 3 and added a 54-run stand for the fourth wicket with Nathan Lyon (38) before adding another 43 runs for the fifth wicket with Travis Head (23).

After Khawaja's dismissal, half-centurion Carey combined with Cameron Green (28) for a 45-run stand for the seventh wicket to take Australia past the 400-run mark. The visitors are in a strong position in the game and will be looking to bowl out Pakistan quickly once they invite the hosts to bat in their first innings.

'Looking for a draw on Day 1': Waqar Younis slams Babar & Co. as Australia dominate Pakistan in 2nd Test

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is being brutally trolled by Indian fans on Twitter after Australian cricketer Marnus Labuschagne recently shared a picture of one of his meals from the country. The Australian team is currently in Pakistan for a full-fledged tour consisting of three Tests, as many ODIs and a one-off T20I game.

Ahead of the second Test between the two sides at the National Stadium in Karachi, Labuschagne took to Twitter on Friday to share a picture of his 'daal and roti' meal. Daal is a thick lentil stew mostly consumed in countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, while roti is a bread made out of wheat flour.

As Labuschagne shared a picture of his meal on Twitter, Indian fans couldn't help but take a dig at the PCB for providing the Aussie batter with below-par food. Many wondered if the Aussie cricketer was 'in a jail' to be consuming daal which was deemed too watery by many.

Here is a look at some of the hilarious reactions by Indian fans to Labuschagne's post:

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting broke down in tears while paying an emotional tribute to his former teammate and friend Shane Warne. Warne passed away on Friday (March 04) aged 52 after suffering a heart attack in Thailand. The news of his tragic demise sent shockwaves across the cricketing fraternity with several former and current cricketers expressing their condolences.

Ponting was seen choking while speaking about Warne, with whom he shared the Australian dressing room for several years. The duo was an integral part of Australia's tremendous success across formats in the late 90s and the early 2000s. Both Warne and Ponting won several matches and tournaments together for their country.

Ponting was in tears as he remembered the legendary spinner and said he was as shocked at the news of Warne's demise as the rest of the world. The former Aussie skipper said the shocking news didn't seem real to him at the time it emerged and it has been hard for him to process it.

“I was shocked I think like probably the rest of the world. I mean I’ve got the messages when I woke up this morning. I went to bed last night knowing that I had to take my daughters for netball and then was confronted with what didn’t seem quite real at that time and even now probably doesn’t really seem like it’s real either so I’ve had a few hours now to digest it all and think about how a part of my life he was and reflect on a lot of those memories through the years," Ponting said in a video after breaking down in tears.

The attack has taken place on the first day of the first Test match between Pakistan and Australia in Rawalpindi, which is less than 200 kilometres away from Peshawar. As per AFP, at least 50 people have been killed while many others have been injured in the attack.

As per an eyewitness, an attacker entered the mosque and 'opened fire' on worshippers inside, killing them 'one by one'. As per a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, Cricket Australia is in contact with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade after the blast. However, it is unlikely that the ongoing tour of the Australian cricket team will be majorly affected by the terror attack.

Australia tour of Pakistan in jeopardy? CA monitoring situation after Peshawar mosque blast

The Australian cricket team is currently in Pakistan on a historic tour of the country for the first time in 24 years. Australia is the first high-profile team in recent years that is set to play a full-fledged series in Pakistan. Australia last played in Pakistan in 1998 and have arrived this year for three Tests, as many ODIs and a one-off T20I against the Babar Azam-led side.

Ahead of the start of the three-match Test series, the Australian team has been alarmed after one of their cricketers received a death threat online. Australian cricketer Ashton Agar has been subjected to a death threat just days ahead of the start of the Test series between the two teams.

“This is a warning for your husband Ashton Agar. If he comes for tour against Pakistan he won't come alive," read a part of the message sent to Madeleine on her social media account.

"Your children will miss their Father if he comes to Pakistan. Our snipers will blow his head," it read further.

As per reports in Australian media, Madeleine was quick to inform about the message to Cricket Australia, who have since released a joint statement along with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on the matter. The Australian team had arrived in Pakistan's Islamabad on Sunday last week ahead of the start of the two-match Test series.

Cricket Australia in its statement said that the threatening message to Agar was not deemed a risk and that extensive security plans are in place for the historic Test series. “There are extensive security plans in place for this type of social media activity, which, in this case, is not considered a risk. No further comment will be made at this time," CA said in a joint statement with PCB.

Australia's tour of the country is a huge boost for the Pakistan Cricket Board in their bid to bring international cricket back to the nation. Major teams have refrained from travelling to Pakistan for security reasons since the infamous attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in 2009.

Last year, New Zealand and England had both pulled out of their respective tours of Pakistan handing a big setback to the PCB. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board will hope for a successful completing of the upcoming series against Australia.

Australian cricketer Ashton Agar receives death threat ahead of Pakistan's Test series against Aussies

The Australian cricket team arrived in Pakistan on Sunday (February 27) ahead of their historic series against the hosts. Australia are in Pakistan to play three Tests, as many ODIs and a one-off T20I game. The Aussies are touring Pakistan for the first time in 24 years making it a historic affair for both nations.

Australia had last toured Pakistan in 1998 and have since refrained from visiting the country like a number of other top cricketing nations. The high-profile teams had stopped visiting Pakistan post the attack of the bus of the Sri Lankan side in Lahore in 2009.

Over the last few years, Pakistan have hosted the likes of West Indies, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe at home but Australia will be the first high-profile team to play a full-fledged series in Pakistan. Though the Aussie side is missing a number of key players, the team's visit to Pakistan is a big boost for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

After arriving in Islamabad on Sunday, Australian Test skipper Pat Cummins spoke about the security arrangements by the Pakistan Cricket Board for the visitors and said he and his teammates feel incredibly safe. Cummins also thanked the PCB for looking after the players well. The Australian team will be confined in their hotel except for their training and matches.

"I feel incredibly safe. We've been really well looked after by the PCB. Upon arrival, there's been lots of security. We were straight off the plane and straight to the hotel," Cummins said on Sunday.

The three-match Test series between Australia and Pakistan will get underway from March 04 with the first Test in Rawalpinidi. The Aussies will then head to Karachi and Lahore for the next two matches before the start of the ODIsin Rawalpindi.

Australia are heading into the Tet series against Pakistan on the back of a comprehenive 4-0 thrashing of England in the Ashes 2021-22. The Aussies will start as favourites against the hosts but will be wary of Pakistan's bowling prowess which can prove tricky for the Australian batters.

Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell is all set to miss the country's historic tour of Pakistan which gets underway next month. Australia will be touring Pakistan for the first time in 24 years. In the last decade, several international teams have refrained from playing in Pakistan due to security reasons after the infamous attack of the Sri Lankan cricket team's bus in Lahore in 2009.

However, Australia have become one of the major teams to agree to tour Pakistan and will be playing a full-fledged series consisting of three Tests, three ODIs and a one-off T20I match against the Men in Green. Maxwell, who is one of the key members of the Australian squad, will miss the entire tour.

The star batter is currently in action for the Aussies in their ongoing T20I series against Sri Lanka at home. During the third T20I between the two teams on Tuesday, Maxwell told host broadcaster Fox Cricket he will not be a part of the team's tour of Pakistan next month due to his wedding with fiancee Vini Raman.

Maxwell revealed he had discussed the scheduling with Cricket Australia last year to avoid missing any series but at the time the Pakistan tour was not on. "Originally, when I organized the dates with CA there was a two-week gap where I could potentially have it. So when I sorted that out, I was pretty happy that I wasn't going to be missing in any series," Maxwell told Fox Sports, as per ESPNcricinfo.

"And then I came to the CA contract meeting midway through last year and they said, well this is [when] the Pakistan series [is on] and I thought, well obviously, that's changed since the last conversation we had," he added.

The likes of David Warner, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Marcus Stoinis and other Australian cricketers, who will be part of the Pakistan tour, will also miss the first few matches of IPL 2022 for their respective teams.

Glenn Maxwell to miss Australia's tour of Pakistan and likely start of IPL 2022, here's why

Australia's Kane Richardson and Ashton Agar combined for a miserly bowling performance as the hosts outclassed Sri Lanka by six wickets in Tuesday's low-scoring third Twenty20 international in Canberra.

The home side now has an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

Richardson (3-21) and Agar (1-14) helped restrict Sri Lanka to a modest 121-6 from their 20 overs. Australia chased the target with ease, reaching 124-4 with 19 balls to spare.

Glenn Maxwell rode his luck for a quick 39, aiding skipper Aaron Finch (35), who anchored the reply, in overpowering a Sri Lankan bowling attack missing leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who tested positive for COVID-19 before the match.

Off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana ploughed a lonely furrow for the touring side, accounting for Ben McDermott in the first ball of the innings and finishing with 3-24.

Batting first after losing the toss, Sri Lanka started sluggishly and were reduced to 51-4 at the halfway mark of their innings after Richardson claimed two early wickets.

"I wasn't at my best the other night, so it was nice to bounce back and I think that pitch, bowling first, suited my strengths," Richardson said.

All-rounder Daniel Sams completed a spectacular diving catch in the deep to give Maxwell the prized wicket of Pathum Nissanka, Sri Lanka`s leading run-scorer in this series, who departed for 16.

Sams replaced Steve Smith in the side after the former captain was concussed in the previous match in a flying attempt to save a six.

Captain Dasun Shanaka (39 not out) and Dinesh Chandimal (25) were left to pick up the pieces after Sri Lanka`s top order failed, but were unable to mount an offensive and went six overs without finding the rope as their side limped to a meagre total.

"No positives today, yet again a poor start from our boys as it's been throughout the series," Shanaka said.

Australia beat Sri Lanka by six wickets to win 3rd T20I, seal series with two games to go

Former Australia skipper Michael Clarke has urged current Aussie captain Pat Cummins to clarify his stand on the ongoing saga involving Justin Langer's shock resignation as head coach. Cummins has been facing intense criticism from some former Australian cricketers, who have slammed him for not taking a stand for Langer and playing a role in his resignation as head coach.

Langer submitted his resignation from the head coach post last week, days after having helped Australia win the Ashes emphatically by 4-0 at home against arch-rivals England. He had last year inspired the team to a memorable maiden T20 World Cup triumph in the UAE and was expected to get an extension as the head coach of the side.

However, Langer was offered a short-term contract extension by Cricket Australia. The former Australia batter decided to turn down the offer and resigned from the post of head coach amid reports that the payers were not happy with his strict coaching style and wanted him to be pushed out.

As Cummins faces criticism for not taking a stand for Langer, Clarke said the Australian skipper needs to come out clear as his clean reputation has already taken a hit.

"The Australian public isn't stupid and this is my point with Pat Cummins. His reputation is squeaky-clean. Right now it has taken a hit, until he stands there and voices his opinion. Look what Mitchell Johnson said about Pat Cummins. A teammate, a friend of his has smoked him," Clarke said while speaking on The Big Sports Breakfast on Monday.

"My advice to Patty is he has got to stand there. He needs to tell the fans where he sits on this because everyone thinks it is Patty who made the decision. That accountability sits with him. He is trying to honour both parties and has done it very well. He is trying to look after Cricket Australia. I don't like seeing Pat get smacked for this because I think he is in a lose-lose situation. He sits right in the middle," he added.

'Australian public is not stupid': Clarke urges Pat Cummins to clear his stand on Langer's shock resignation

Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting on Saturday termed Australian head coach Justin Langer`s resignation, five months before his term expired, "a really sad day", while another stalwart, Matthew Hayden, castigated Test skipper Pat Cummins for failing to publicly endorse the 51-year-old Langer to get a new contract.

Langer had taken charge of the Australian team in 2018 following the `Sandpaper gate` scandal, and while he was reportedly unpopular with some player in the side, he guided the team to its maiden ICC T20 World Cup title triumph in the UAE in November last year and the 4-0 Ashes victory recently.

Langer resigned from his post on Saturday, unhappy with the short-term contract extension offered by Cricket Australia (CA) after a marathon seven-hour board meeting.

Both Ponting and Hayden are Langer`s former teammates and close friends and they slammed CA for its handling of the matter, less than two months before the start of one of the most crucial Test and One-day International (ODI) series against Pakistan.

"I think it`s a really sad day as far as Australian cricket is concerned," Ponting told ABC radio on Saturday. "And if you look back, it`s been a really poor six months. I think of the way that Cricket Australia as a whole have handled some of the better people in Australian cricket, Justin Langer and Tim Paine, I think it`s been almost embarrassing with the way they`ve handled those two cases."

Paine stepped down as Australian Test skipper weeks before the start of the Ashes last year after a sexting scandal was revealed. He later took an indefinite break from all forms of cricket.

A CA statement did not "address specifics of the review into Langer`s future, other than to confirm he had been offered a short-term contract extension," a report in cricket.com.au said.

"CA would like to thank Justin for his outstanding leadership since he became Australian men`s team coach in 2018 and for guiding the team to the T20 World Cup title last year and the 4-0 Ashes victory," the CA statement read.

"It was absolutely clear that no one backed him," an emotional Hayden told the ABC.

"If you listen to the Australian captain (Cummins) the other day not mention once any kind of commendation or support for him, I don`t think (Justin) would be going very well at all. That would be extremely hurtful. The whole thing just reeks of being orchestrated, basically from the moment all of this garbage started coming out (about Langer`s coaching style) in winter last year. You could see the writing was on the wall," added Hayden.

Cummins has never publicly endorsed Langer`s contract extension, and as recently as February 2 he avoided speaking on the head coach`s future, saying it is the job of CA to decide. "It`s part of speculation which I don`t think is really healthy. I just don`t want to add to it. That`s Cricket Australia`s job. It`s not my job," Cummins was quoted as saying by ABC News.

Langer reportedly had an uneasy relationship with some players in the squad, and things came to a boil following Australia`s away defeat to Bangladesh in a T20I series last year. The Cricket Australia management and the Australian cricket team leadership group had to sit down to resolve the crisis.

"Deep down, Pat (Cummins) might have known that this day was coming," Ponting said. "If he had have gone on the front foot and endorsed Justin, they would have been in a position where they wouldn`t have been able to move on from him.

"If it`s not just him, if there are other players that are coming to him and letting him know that maybe they feel that Justin is not the right man, I think that actually puts Pat in a difficult position as well.

"I am very close to Justin, we`re like brothers, but I`ve not got too heavily involved in this because... there`s no way that I could change the way that this looked like it was heading. What`s happened today, I`ve sort of felt that has been heading that way for quite a while," added Ponting.

Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden slam Cricket Australia as Justin Langer quits as head coach

Justin Langer resigned as coach of Australia on Saturday, just weeks after leading the side to a 4-0 Ashes series win over England, with Cricket Australia saying he had declined a short-term extension to his contract.

Langer`s departure came after he held contract discussions with Cricket Australia on Friday, with his current deal set to expire in June. Australia also won last year`s Twenty20 World Cup for the first time under Langer but there have been reports of player discontent over his coaching style.

Langer was reported to have reacted angrily during a recent meeting with Cricket Australia over his contract and had been asked to reapply for the role.

His management company, Dynamic Sports & Entertainment Group (DSEG), said his resignation was effective immediately.

"DSEG confirms that our client Justin Langer has this morning tendered his resignation as coach of the Australian men`s cricket team," the company tweeted.

Cricket Australia said in a statement Langer was offered the extension on Friday. "Justin was offered a short-term extension to his current contract, which sadly he has opted not to accept," it said, adding that Andrew McDonald would act as interim head coach with a test tour of Pakistan just weeks away.

"The contract extension offered to Justin was the result of a thorough review process that evaluated many factors including future requirements of the team and the upcoming extensive schedule of fixtures.

"It included the opportunity to defend the T20 World Cup title in Australia at the end of this year. Justin informed CA this morning he was not accepting the offer and would resign with immediate effect."

Langer took over as head coach in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in 2018 and Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said he had been "outstanding" in the role.

"He has restored the trust in the team and his legacy is assured," he said.

Despite Australia`s success, there had been speculation in recent months that Langer did not enjoy the full support of the dressing room. Senior players and Cricket Australia managers met last year amid reports Langer`s intense coaching style had rubbed players the wrong way.

Australia test captain Pat Cummins recently praised Langer for doing a "fantastic" job but said it was only fair for Cricket Australia to conduct an evaluation process before making a decision on renewing his contract.

Former captain Ricky Ponting was scathing in the way the governing body had handled the matter. "It`s a really sad day as far as Australian cricket is concerned," he said on ABC Radio on Saturday.

"Reading the tea leaves, it seems, as he would say, a very small group of the playing group ... haven`t loved the way he`s gone about it.

"And that`s been enough to force a man that`s put his life, heart and soul into Australian cricket and done what I believe is a sensational job in turning around the culture and the way the Australian cricket team has been looked at over the last three or four years ... out of his dream job."

Langer, who earned 105 test caps, said last month he was proud of how the team had been performing. "Whatever happens from now on, we can all be incredibly proud of this little period," he said on Australian SEN Radio. [L4N2OZ321]

After opting to bowl first, England's seamers made the most of the new pink ball, dismissing David Warner and Steve Smith for ducks, plus SCG twin centurion Usman Khawaja for just six.

At 3-12, the home side were reeling, as Ollie Robinson (two wickets) and Stuart Broad (one) did the damage with the ball. However, Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head opted to fight fire with fire, racing to 3-79 off just 21 overs on the stroke of dinner.

But Broad bowled Marnus round his legs to give England their fourth wicket of the session, seemingly justifying the call from Root to bowl first.

Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg recently named the best batsman and the bowler of the year 2021 while speaking in a video on his YouTube channel. Hogg rated Indian spinner R Ashwin as the best bowler of 2021 for his consistent performances throughout the year and his heroics across all formats of the game. 2021 was a memorable year for Ashwin as he made his comeback in the Indian T20I side after a wait of over four years.

Ashwin was named in India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2021 and has since not looked back as he continues his impressive run. While talking about the best bowlers of the year gone by, Hogg said Ashwin was the number one. He also reserved special praise of Pakistan pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Ali, who both enjoyed a magnificent year with the ball and were among the wickets for their national team.

While Ashwin was the highest wicket-taker in Tests with 54 scalps to his name in nine matches, Shaheen finished with 47 wickets in as many games. Hasan picked up 41 wickets for Pakistan in eight matches and was exceptional throughout the year in the longest format.

“Spin to win, he’s the number 1. Shaheen Afridi and Hasan Ali, 47 and 41 wickets for them (respectively). They have been carrying Pakistan in the bowling department, so you can’t beat those 2," Hogg said in the video.

While he picked Ashwin as the best bowler of the year 2021, Hogg named England skipper Joe Root as the best batter of the year. Root had a tremendous 2021 as he finished the year as the highest run-getter in Tests with 1708 runs from 15 matches. He has been the lone warrior for England in the ongoing Ashes 2021-22.

Root failed to inspire England to victory in the Ashes 2021-22 but has managed to continue his good form with the bat. He is the top scorer for England so far in the five-match series with 277 runs from four matches. However, England have lost the Ashes 3-0 with three defeats and a draw in the four matches so far.

'He’s No. 1': Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg names Team India star as best bowler of 2021

Australia batter Marnus Labuchange hilariously made a solo appeal for a caught behind dismissal against Jos Buttler on Day 5 of the 4th Ashes Test on Sunday. The fourth Test ended in a draw after England's last pair of James Anderson and Stuart Broad managed to survive the final spell in what was a thrilling finish at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in Sydney.

It was an enthralling Day 5 filled with intense action as Australia gave their all to continue their winning streak in the Ashes 2021-22. The hosts were on the verge of winning the fourth Test when they required only one wicket in the final two overs of the day. However, Broad and Anderson combined with the bat to deny Australia their fourth straight win.

While it was an action-packed Day 5, Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne had a tongue-in-cheek moment on the field when he ended up bursting into an appeal for a caught-behind dismissal against Jos Buttler despite the England batter not edging the ball. Australia captain Pat Cummins bowled a short delivery against Buttler which was left by the English batter as the ball travelled closely from his bat.

While there was no edge, Labuschagne was seen appealing alone before realising that none of his teammates were interested. The no-look appeal from Labuschagne left the fans in splits on social media as the video of the incident went viral instantly.

Talking about the Test match, England were handed a massive target of 388 runs in their second innings while Australia needed all ten wickets on Day 5 to win the game. The Aussies once again bowled well as they managed to get closer to victory with nine wickets out of the ten.

However, fifties from Zak Crawley, Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow's gritty 41 before Anderson and Broad's fight at the end saw England manage to secure a draw in the Test match. Australia have already clinched the prestigious Urn with three back-to-back wins in the first three games while England are yet to win a game in the Ashes 2021-22.

Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli has endured a lean patch in international cricket for a while now as he continues to wait for his 71st century. Kohli had last scored a hundred for India in the Pink-ball Test against Bangladesh in 2019 and has since not managed to breach the triple-figure mark even once across all three formats of the game.

His form with the willow has been questionable as Kohli has struggled to score runs consistently. In the ongoing Test series against South Africa, the batting maestro was expected to hit the ground running from the first Test in Centurion. However, he failed to get going and was dismissed cheaply in both innings.

Kohli scored 35 and 18 runs in the two innings of the first Test against the Proteas before missing the second game due to a back spasm. The Indian Test skipper has averaged only 26.07 in the 14 Test matches that he has played in the last two years with 652 runs to his name.

However, Kohli has recieved backing from Australian opener David Warner, who believes it's only about time that Kohli gets back to his old rhythm. Lauding Kohli for the high standards he has set for himself with his performances in the past, Warner said he has earned the right to fail because he is so good at what he does.

Warner also explained how the coronavirus pandemic and playing in bio-bubbles for long period might have taken a toll on Kohli's performances. He also highlighted the fact that Kohli had become a father last year and has not had much spare time to be with his family due to busy cricketing schedule.

"We have to understand Kohli’s situation too. The guy has been playing under a bubble for a long time. He has just become a father and rarely gets to see his daughter and wife. All these factors affect performance of the players. Even the best fail to cope up with tough situations sometimes," Warner said on the show Backstage with Boria.

"A lot of people talk about Virat Kohli's form over the last couple of years. We've gone through a pandemic. He has just had a baby. We only see how well he has done. You are allowed to fail. You are allowed to fail, you earn the right to fail when you are so good at what you do," he added.

Kohli is no more India's captain in the limited-overs formats and has a significant burden taken off his shoulders. He would be looking to make the most of it and bounce back to good form in the Indian team's ongoing tour of South Africa.
