In the second innings, Australia got reduced to 113 for four at stumps on day three, with Mark Wood picking three wickets. Given the touring side stares at a probable defeat with rain likely to play spoilsport on the remaining two days, Hazlewood said he would be pleased if proceedings get halted in Manchester.

However, if the rain persists and the game gets drawn, Australia will retain the Ashes irrespective of the final Test's result.

"I'd be very pleased," Josh Hazlewood admitted. "It's obviously forecast, but forecasts can change all the time. Obviously, rain and light play a big part in cricket and have done forever. So, yeah, it'd be great to lose a few overs here and there, and make our job a little easier if I'm hanging in there."

Having asked Australia to bat first, the visitors scored 317 in their first innings before Ben Stokes’ team began their dominance. “If England wins this Test, then they are going to take the Ashes 3-2. If this goes England's way, three days before the next Test, the memories and scars will stay. England have recognised when they are ahead, and they have accelerated and taken the game away,” the veteran keeper-batter added.

As things stand, England are head and shoulders ahead of Australia with a lead of over 180 until lunch on day three. While they would like to add as many runs possible, even a 180-plus run-mark puts them in a commanding position.

With England having a spin bowling option in Moeen Ali, who accounted for Marnus Labuschagne in the first innings, they would feel they are a step ahead of their opponent.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has raised concern on Australia opting not to include a spinner in side for the crunch clash in the ongoing fourth Ashes Test. Led by Pat Cummins, the Aussies took a gutsy decision of not playing a recognised spinner in the Playing XI for the first time since January 2012. According to Ponting, he was surprised as well as worried for the side as they could miss the services of Todd Murphy (dropped) and Nathan Lyon (injured).

“I was surprised they didn’t go in with (a spinner) as if you haven’t got one, you can be found out very easily,” said Ponting while commentating on Sky Sports.

Josh Hazlewood came in for Scott Boland while Todd Murphy was dropped in favour of Cameron Green in the side. Notably, the behaviour of English fans in the Long Room was called out by many former cricketers and the MCC even suspended three members provisionally for the abuse. The matter is under investigation by the MCC.

Australia opener Usman Khawaja, meanwhile, has said that the abuse in England during the ongoing Ashes as gone too far. Khawaja was one of the players who had been subjected to abuse in the Long Room following Bairstow's dismissal.

"Personally, if I am coming to the cricket and watching the cricket, I wouldn't want my kids to be around that. If I saw that, I would 100 per cent make a complaint or just leave."

"If you talk about it to England guys, they say we are equally as rough when [they go to Australia]. I don't agree with it either way. I don't think it's the right thing to do," Khawaja said.

Thus, swift action was taken and the MCC members involved in abusing Khawaja got suspended with immediate effect.

Despite missing the opening Test, Starc is only three wickets behind leading wicket-taker Stuart Broad (16) in the Ashes 2023. The 33-year-old’s tally has been only bettered by Broad and his own skipper Pat Cummins (15) while they have played one match more than Starc. His impact was sensible immediately after returning to the squad as he scalped three wickets in both innings of the Lord’s Test.

"There was a big [focus] on economy rates last time which plenty of guys spoke about throughout the tour, and we all bought into that. And that was something that worked really [well] for us to retain the Ashes then," Starc said.

"[But] it affected my approach certainly going back to Australia and losing some airspeed. It took away from some of my strengths and some of the role that I play in our attack,” added Starc.

Australia will take on England in the fourth Ashes Test, which will start on Wednesday, July 19 at Old Trafford. England made a remarkable comeback in the Ashes after winning the Headingley Test and have reduced the visitor's lead to 2-1.
