England's James Anderson is going nowhere. The veteran seamer, aged 40, playing his fourth Test in this Ashes, has picked just five wickets and yet doesn't look like hanging his boots anytime soon. Speaking to Sky Sports after the second day's play at the Kia Oval in London, Anderson admitted being rusty but ruled out any chance of him not appearing for England in whites again.

Following the Manchester-drawn Test that saw rain washing out five out of six sessions on the final two days, several experts and pundits pointed out Anderson's 'lack of zip' as one of the reasons why England failed to dismiss Australia early in the second innings, and thus couldn't go for the win.

Having picked just four wickets at over 76 in the lead-up to the fifth and final Ashes Test, Anderson was under pressure to perform after getting backed by Captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.

When asked about his retirement plans, Anderson played it down in a fraction of a second, urging he still has some fuel left in him and that he also gets to decide on when to part ways with this game.

"I have tried not to listen to the comments. For me, that question has been there for the last six years, even longer. As soon as you get into your 30s as a bowler, it's, 'how long has he got left?', Anderson added.

Anderson has been around for over 20 years now. After all that he did for England and achieved as a professional cricketer, the veteran seamer said he deserves to decide when to retire.&nbsp;

"I don't feel like I'm bowling badly or am losing pace or that I am on the way out. I still feel I can offer a lot to this team.

"I'd like to [decide when I go]," Anderson added.

Shedding some light on his performance in the ongoing Ashes, Anderson said, "We all know as professional cricketers that you go through lean patches. You just pray it is not in the most high-profile series you can play in!

"I try to look at it objectively. Yes, I have not got the wickets, but I am still trying to do the job for the team and help the guy out at the other end."

On day two, he picked one wicket of Mitchell Marsh and bowled economically with figures of 67 for one in 26 overs.

"I was pleased with the way I bowled all day. I felt in good rhythm and that I was getting the ball to carry through - which is unusual!" he added.

Mitchell Starc is Australia’s most successful bowler in the 2023 Ashes with 19 wickets so far, and despite suffering a heavy blow on his shoulder while fielding in the previous Test in Manchester, the veteran seamer remains unbothered about it. Starc said the only thing he cares about now is how he can help Australia beat England in the final Test at the Oval and clinch a historic series win on their soil for the first time since 2001.

After electing to bowl first in the fifth Test, Australia dismissed England on 283 on day one, with Starc picking a four-wicket haul, getting rid of Captain Ben Stokes, Harry Brook and Chris Woakes.

Speaking to the media after the first day’s play, Starc said he didn’t get any scans done on his troubled shoulder, adding he can bowl fine despite little pain, which can be looked after following the end of this Test.

"I'm not interested in getting scanned or anything like that," Starc said. "We'll worry about that at the end of the week. Just a bit of discomfort there, something going on there in the AC [joint]. Nothing major, and I'm still able to bowl and do what I need to do."

While Starc needed to get some extra strapping during the day, he returned to pick crucial wickets to trigger England’s collapse.

Having dealt with injuries throughout his illustrious career, Starc said such discomforts are part and parcel of the game and will go away eventually. Though he missed the first Test in Edgbaston, with Australia picking fit-again Josh Hazlewood instead, Starc performed in all three Tests with both new and old ball.

"I've played for over ten years and been through a few niggles and injuries over the time. There's been times when I've left the team a man down or other people have. We all push through niggles and whatnot. No difference this week, it's just a little bit of discomfort, and away we go," Starc added.

With Australia already leading 2-1 and having retained the urn on the back of that, winning the fifth Test and clinching the trophy is the only aim on their head. And that in itself is enough for Starc to not worry about his shoulder injury and instead push extra to go for the win.

McGrath, perhaps cricket’s greatest, let alone Australia’s, thinks if Warner doesn’t come up with something magnificent with the bat in the second innings, he might not play Test cricket again.

McGrath said knowing Warner has expressed his desire to play till next home summer and hang his boots from Tests at his home ground in Sydney (against Pakistan), his performances are not helping him much. The veteran seamer added how Warner is middling the ball – which, to McGrath, looked fine. But the left-hander hasn’t converted those into daddy scores, which eventually put the middle order under some pressure.

“I know he came out the other day and said he wanted to play it to the end of next summer. But I think the pressure is on him; the vultures are circling. Unless he comes out in the second dig and produces a big score, I think he might struggle,” McGrath said.

“Unfortunately, he’s got a lot of starts this series and then just gets out. He had that big innings back in Australia on Boxing Day where he got the 200, but there hasn’t been a sort of real big score before or after that for quite some time,” McGrath added.

Having plied his trade in almost every league, Morgan knows about the pros and cons of this latest format but remains firm in his opinion that the rise of franchise-based T20 leagues will only benefit this game.

While questions surrounding the slow death of Test cricket in the wake of the expansion of T20 leagues keep even the top bosses searching for answers, Morgan sees a positive side of it, saying what this format has done in helping cricket reach the masses outside of regular playing nations neither of the ODIs and Tests was able to do so.

"Cricket has never been more popular around the world. Cricket is spreading far and wide. T20 cricket has allowed cricket to grow at a pace that no other format has been able to achieve it. So, we need to sit back and thank T20 cricket and recognise it for taking it everywhere," Morgan said.

The Future Tours Programme (FTP) is looking like there will be more T20 cricket played than bilateral; the game needs to change with that, and that's how it's going to go. You can't fight the exceptional growth and pace at which the game is becoming so popular. I think ODI Cricket is going to become, at some stage, most likely confined to just World Cups," Morgan added.

With disappointment luring in for both teams, Morgan - currently playing and captaining Harare Hurricane in Zimbabwe’s inaugural T10 league, shared his thoughts.

While he said having Zimbabwe in for the 2023 World Cup would have been great for them and cricket, for what they bring to the game, he was disappointed for the West Indies on not making the cut.

"Zimbabwe was devastated not to qualify for the World Cup, they were disappointed. On the flip side, watching West Indies cricket not qualify, given their reputation they had over the course of generations of producing legends of the game, is sad in many ways because the level of expectations has been there for a long time and the level of performance hasn't met that," Morgan added.

Zak Crawley is the highest run-getter in Ashes 2023. After four Tests, the English opener has amassed 385 runs including a daddy hundred and a fifty. Crawley started the series with a flamboyant fifty (61) in the series opener, in Edgbaston, and a brisk 48 in the Lord's Test. He followed it up&nbsp;with 33 and 44 in the third Test, in Headingley, but came to his best in the fourth and penultimate Test.

After England rode on Chris Woakes' five-fer to dismiss Australia for 317 in the Manchester Test, opener Crawley started off cautiously but went berserk from there on to slam 189 (182), laced with 21 fours and three sixes. Even though the Test ended in a draw, due to rain, Crawley made a huge mark and returned with the Player-of-the-Match award. The cricketing fraternity lauded the 38-Test old Crawley and former English captain Alastair Cook has joined the bandwagon as well.

Cook is in awe of Crawley's strokeplay and compared his playing style with India great Virender Sehwag.

"You can compare a little bit of Sehwag in terms of the ability to take frontline bowlers down. It's actually unique and when he does have his day, he changes games. That's why he's been backed so hard by the England leadership and they got rewarded for it. I mean he plays shots that I could only dream of and it was an extraordinary innings," Cook, England's second-most successful Test captain mentioned.

Crawley will be over the moon having being compared with Sehwag. The former Indian opener was a nightmare for bowlers as he often took them on from the word go while opening the innings in the&nbsp;red-ball format. He ended with 8,586&nbsp;runs in 104 Tests, at a strike rate of&nbsp;82.23, including 32 fifties and 23 tons.

England will hope for another big contribution from Crawley in the fifth and final Test as Ben Stokes &amp; Co. need to win The Oval contest to end the series at 2-2. Crawley, who has been the top run-getter in Ashes 2023, further mentioned, "I think 2-2 would be fair. It felt like we were getting on top of them for sure, and if we'd won this game it would have been very interesting to see. They've got some very good players and would have bounced back but the momentum would have been with us for sure."

After the second day’s play at Old Trafford, Aussie quick Josh Hazlewood, in a presser, said he would pray to rain Gods to help them retain the urn, and his prayers got answered, as the rain did washout day five to see this game end in a draw. As a result, on the back of a 2-1 lead in the ongoing Ashes, Australia retained the urn for the fourth time.

It comes as a huge disappointment for England, who were head and shoulders ahead of their opponents in this Test and looked like sealing the game to level the series 2-2. While home fans and the English dressing room would rue the missed opportunity to win back the urn for the first time since 2015, the Aussie camp would be happy to claim it without putting not even half a good performance in this Test particularly.

With five out of six sessions getting washed out on days four and five, Australia, who were 61 runs behind with five wickets in hand, would feel lucky to get away in this Test as the final match at the Kia Oval in London would be England’s game to win, to at least level the series.

England won the toss in this do-or-die fourth Test, and decided to bowl first, an option captains often avoid choosing at this venue. Backing the brand of cricket – Bazball, which England is playing and endorsing, this unorthodox call shouldn’t surprise many.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Australia, in the first innings, couldn’t do much despite having eight batters, including two seam-bowling all-rounders in Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh, as they got all out on 317. England, in their reply, posted a mammoth total of 592, with opener Zak Crawley being their top-scorer (189). Besides him, five other batters also completed their fifties, with keeper Jonny Bairstow getting stranded on 99.

<h2>Labuschagne saved Australia’s sinking boat</h2>

Australia’s number three and batter in form, Marnus Labuschagne’s maiden Ashes hundred in England in the second innings saved his team from an embarrassing defeat in this series. With him and Marsh, in particular, eating balls, it helped Australia play for the draw – something they wanted to retain the urn.&nbsp;

And as destiny had it, despite little play in the final session of day four, Australia’s second innings score of 214 for five saw the visiting team successfully unlock their achievement.

The fifth and final Test of the 2023 Ashes will begin on July 27 in London.

Speaking on BBC's Ashes Daily podcast, Vaughan said Anderson’s selection doesn’t look right in hindsight, as England could have instead opted for Josh Tongue, who even starred with the ball during the Lord’s game.

"We all agreed that James Anderson deserved to have that sentimental pick because he's a legend of the game, but it may have cost England," Vaughan said.

"Josh Tongue is a young quick who has created impact in that one game that he has played, and I know the Australians don't like facing him.

"Jimmy, in the three Test matches that he's played in this series, has just had no impact at all. I don't remember him getting a key wicket at any stage, and that's very unlike Jimmy Anderson,” Vaughan added.

Vaughan opined unlike in the past, Anderson missed ‘the zip’ that used to traumatise batters from across the world in these conditions. The ex-batter added Chris Woakes, who got his first Ashes game in the third Test, bowled better with the Dukes Ball – something Anderson failed to replicate.

"Chris Woakes has almost showed us what can be done with the Dukes ball when you've got that zip because he's been going over the top with the seam, and it's just been doing enough," Vaughan said.

"It's been wobble seam and a bit more action off the surface at a similar pace. It's not like Chris has been bowling three or four mph quicker than Jimmy. For whatever reason, Jimmy's not been getting that kiss off the surface that we've seen for many, many years," Vaughan added.

Meanwhile, in three matches, Anderson picked just four wickets at over 76, and now for the final Test at the Kia Oval that starts on July 27, the veteran bowler will fight for a place in XI with Robinson.

As of now, Australia are 61 runs behind England but the hosts need only six wickets for a shot at winning. Broad also wrote that he'd love to go in the final Test at the Oval 2-2.

“If we can get to 2-2 it would set up the series just as I’d hoped it would. I said I would love to go to the Oval at 2-2, and I genuinely meant it,” he said.

While taking six wickets could take a bit of time even if the play happens on day 5, the English fast bowler, however, thinks that the momentum never left the home team. Notably, England are 1-2 down in the series with defeats in the first two Tests.

“I have never felt the momentum has left us in this series because ultimately we played a brilliant game at Edgbaston, although Australia came out on top,” he said.

“In our own minds, we felt we played all the cricket — we declared on day one, bowled them out and tried to set up a game to get a result. Yes, Australia got the first two results with victory at Lord’s too, but it didn’t feel like the impetus was with them, and Ben Stokes’s innings of 155 in the second Test galvanised us.

“Getting within 43 runs created a do-or-die scenario and from then on we knew we had to get things exactly right. At Headingley, we were great and the first few days here we were brilliant,” wrote Broad.

As things stand,&nbsp;English hopes now hang in the balance of just not winning the Manchester Test but also the Ashes. England will need to win the Manchester Test that will see them level the five-match series 2-2 with a decider at the Oval later in the month. On the contrary, a draw for Australia will see them retain the Ashes as even an England win in the Oval will only see the series finish at 2-2. As Australia are defending champions of the historic rivalry, they will retain the crown.

This will also mean, England’s eight-year drought of not winning the Ashes will continue. However, England fans will now hope for positive news on Day 5 in Manchester.
