While Rishi Kapoor’s son Ranbir performed the last rites, one person who missed seeing him was daughter Riddhima Kapoor Sahni. Lockdown diaries: Alia Bhatt is 'alone together' with her girl gang

Some of the most prominent film actors from different film industries in India recently came together for a short film 'Family'. Highlighting the importance of social distancing and how a film can be shot within the confinements of one's home.

The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi, Mamooty, Mohanlal, Prasenjit Chatterjee, Sonali Kulkarni, Prithviraj Rajkumar and Diljit Dosanjh- some of the leading names from various regional film industries.

Considering the stars shot their respective portions from their own homes, they had to rely on family members to shoot the sequences. In an interview to a news daily, ad filmmaker Prasoon Pandey, who conceptualised the film and virtually directed it revealed that how Ranbir and Alia, who have recently moved in together, shot each other's portions while Nick Jonas turned cameraman for wife Priyanka Chopra at their LA home.

"Amitji’s portions were shot by Abhishek. Nick Jonas shot Priyanka’s segment, Rajinikanth ji’s was shot by his daughter Soundarya. Ranbir and Alia went behind the camera for each other. Everyone was so gracious. They didn’t come into the frame, but they were simply helping. They were so selfless,” Prasoon said.

The director added that his son shot the template video with him portraying all the characters, to give the stars a better idea about what is expected and how to frame the shots and which direction to look at.

Malayalam actor Dulquer Salmaan shared the film on Instagram and revealed how he had shot his father, superstar Maoomty's portion at home.

As Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt ringed in her 27th birthday on Sunday, she recieved an adorable wish from her mother Soni Razdan. She shared unseen childhood photos of Alia and wrote a heartfelt note for her daughter.

The 63-year-old actor took to Instagram and penned a heartfelt message for the 'Highway' actor and wrote, "Happy Birthday my baby girl! To me, this is how you will always feel. A sweet little baby that I need to look after and make sure your life is going as per plan. Of course these days I am not required to look after you much and that's as it should be. But once a mother as they say .... all I wish for you is to stay safe and healthy particularly in these days of health anxiety. So this year my birthday wish is all tied up with good health! Have a wonderful day today and a healthy safe and at the same time productive year to come."

To me this is how you will always feel. A sweet little baby that I need to look after and make sure your life is going as per plan. Of course these days I am not required to look after you much and that’s as it should be. But once a mother as they say .... all I wish for you is to stay safe and healthy particularly in these days of health anxiety. So this year my birthday wish is all tied up with good health ! Have a wonderful day today and a healthy safe and at the same time productive year to come. Wish you all happiness my darling, you work so hard doing what you do. This year I hope you have a super successful year and also have a little more time for yourself. To breathe, to relax and to just do nothing once in a while. So cheers to that ! Lots of love always and always ... Mama ♥️♥️♥️

Star Screen Awards 2019: Ranveer Singh, Ayushmann Khurrana win acting honours; here's the full list of winners

There's so much to take away from Zoya Akhtar's latest film 'Gully Boy'.

A story of an underdog triumphing against the odds is a story as old as time and yet 'Gully Boy' — based in the chaotic lanes of Asia's biggest slum, Mumbai's Dharavi — tells a story that is riveting, with superlative performances by not just its lead but the entire cast.

'Gully Boy' is the story of an honest, diligent Murad who may share a cube-like home with his large family in Dharavi but who also harbours dreams of becoming the next big thing in hip-hop. Initially reluctant to speak up, he finds a mentor in MC Sher, a fellow rap artist; and the two together literally own the underground music scene in no time.

You'll find yourself rooting for almost each of the characters in the film. Co-written by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti, the film has such well-etched characters that your heart goes out to each of them at some point or the other.

Leading lady Alia Bhatt plays the feisty, over-possessive Safeena, Murad's girlfriend in the film. Bhatt always manages to shine in her roles and this time is no different.

The film though belongs to Ranveer Singh who delivers perhaps the best performance of his career.

'Gully Boy' quick review: You don't have to be a fan of hip-hop to like this film

In a small cubbyhole in Dharavi, rapper Murad quietly records lyrics on a borrowed iPad in the dead of the night. As he pushes the play button to hear his recording, his grandmother mutters in her sleep to not talk to himself and instead sleep as it’s late.

A poignant moment in Zoya Akhtar's 'Gully Boy' which not only sets the tone of the film well but manages to put a smile on the viewer because of its reliability. Where Indian parents, having struggled their entire life, are unable to fathom the new ideas that their children present.

Akhtar's film is filled with such moments-each relatable in its own way. Murad may live in Dharavi slums in Mumbai, but his struggles, angst represent the sentiments of many in the country to a great extent.

A closet rapper, Murad knows the only way to be out of the slums is to study and get a decent job. He doesn't want to be a driver like his father who constantly reminds him that he needs to repay him for all the money he has spent on Murad's education.

A chance encounter with MC Sher a fellow underground rapper makes Murad discover the world of underground music which in no time the two start ruling. As he gains recognition and success, his equation with his friends, family especially his disapproving father and over-possessive girlfriend Safeena suffers.

Perhaps the greatest win for the film is its writing. It presents a human story where each of the characters is well written. It might be a story of a rapper from Dharavi but writers Reema Kagti and Akhtar herself give intricate details of each of the characters. So you know why Murad's friend steals cars out of boredom, you understand why Safeena is such a brat, your heart goes out for Sher when you see his family. It is rare to find such detailed character sketch in Hindi cinema and that's why Gully Boy manages to strike a chord.

The writing is ably supported by superlative performances by the entire cast. Be it Vijay Raaz who plays Murad's angst-ridden father or Kalki Koechlin, the Berkeley graduate music producer who harbours a crush in Murad or newcomer Siddhant Chaturvedi who absolutely shines as self-assured, bright MC Sher, Murad's mentor- all the actors deliver a memorable performance.

The film's leading lady Alia Bhatt plays the feisty, jealous Safeena to perfection. Give Bhatt any role, and she somehow always manages to sparkle in it. In ‘Gully Boy’ you root for her even though you know she is wrong at several occasions. Bhatt with smile, perfect timing delivers a solid, strong performance. As Safeena, she manipulates emotions of those around her to her own convenience with always a straight, innocent face that everyone falls for. It's a treat to watch her erupt on the screen every time a girl looks at her man.

Balancing Safeena’s feisty nature, is the cool and calm Murad. Played by the man of the moment Ranveer Singh, Murad only vents his frustration and anger through his music. Akhtar truly could not have found a better actor than Ranveer Singh to play the part. Given his offscreen persona, one would ideally not imagine Singh to deliver such a nuanced, restraint performance and that’s where the actor surprises you. He makes you forget Ranveer Singh the star and makes you root for the underdog. You smile with him, you cry with him and you celebrate with him. From the loud, boisterous performance in Rohit Shetty’s ‘Simmba’ just two months back to the subtle act in ‘Gully Boy’, Singh truly shows a vast range and it should be lauded. The film ultimately belongs to him and he is pitch perfect as Murad.

The other hero of the film is of course its music. Completely new and different from usual Bollywood music, Akhtar’s along with Ankur Tewari manages to bring some of the best rappers in the country to work for the soundtrack and the result is magical. It has Divine- on whose life the film is loosely based on- doing playback in several soundtracks and even Singh does his own playback. With poignant lyrics, the soundtrack of ‘Gully Boy’ will hopefully herald a new genre of music in Bollywood.

The film’s camera work by Jay Oza is praise worthy as the film makes Mumbai look picturesque. Each of the frames are so beautiful and yet never overpowers the main plot.

Some would say the film ultimately narrates a story that is predictable and known. After all the story of an underdog triumphing over odds is a story as old as time but still you will find yourself involved with ‘Gully Boy’. It’s not just a story of a boy from Dharavi but Akhtar’s love letter to Mumbai and its undying spirit to never give up. Murad represents scores of people in the city, who beat the odds on a daily basis.

There is really very little to not like in ‘Gully Boy’. You may or may not be a fan of underground music, but the film still will leave you with a big smile.

‘Gully Boy’ review: Zoya Akhtar presents Ranveer Singh in a refreshingly new avatar

Who doesn't like a tragic love story? One gets a strange sense of satisfaction to watch unrequited love on the big screen. You can cry buckets, relate to it some way or the other and however be the ending, come out of the theater with happy tears.

In the last decade or two- the one name that comes to mind when one thinks of tragic love-dramas in Bollywood is Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Bhansali, with his opulence, over-the-top dramas has made unrequited love look stunning on the big screen. So when the trailer of filmmaker Abhishek Varman's 'Kalank' first came out- one couldn't help but notice the Bhansali influence in every frame. But does 'Kalank' make for a Bhansali level of tragic love-story? Only in parts.

A story, which is loosely inspired by Yash Chopra's 'Trishul', is set in Husnabad, outside of Lahore in the year 1946. Its a time when India's is on the brink of partition and tension between Hindu and Muslim extremist is palpable. And amid this hate blossoms love between two uncanny people. Roop (Alia Bhatt) the rebellious woman trapped in a loveless marriage and Zafar(Varun Dhawan) an angst-ridden bastard who has grown up in the lanes of Hiramandi, the famous red-light area of Lahore.

The two are not meant to be together. She is an educated woman, wife of a rich man, Dev Chaudhary (Aditya Roy Kapur) who just to spite her in-laws goes to learn music from Bahaar Begum(Madhuri Dixit) in the forbidden Hiramandi. He only knows how to hate, and uses Roop initially to destroy Dev's father( Sanjay Dutt) but finds himself falling in love instead.

Roop and Dev's forbidden love is the core of 'Kalank' and the Hindu-Muslim riots form the backdrop of the story. With a huge budget (Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala are co-producers) Varman, who also writes the screenplay, presents a fictional world which is opulent and visually stunning. In Varman's version of Hiramandi, Ramleela spills out the streets in a very elaborate fashion, where Ravan is burnt by multiple Rams emerging from the water and where canals in Hiramandi are decorated by flower petals.

Binod Pradhan does complete justice in capturing the grandeur on screen making scenes look beautiful and sets the tone of the film just right. Music by Pritam is hummable with the titke track standing out the most.

Among the actors, Varun and Alia get the maximum screen time. Alia, who has in a short span of time proved her mettle as an actor, delivers a restraint performance as the strong-willed, stubborn, rebellious Roop. She is vulnerable in love but also angry at how her life has turned out. And Alia delivers these emotions well on screen. Varun, on the other hand, struggles a bit to show the angst that his character Zafar has. You have seen several prominent actors from Big B to SRK- play such flawed heroes on screen. So Varun has big shoes to fill. While the actor tries, it is the screenplay that lets him down. His anger for his parents is discussed to great length but somehow you are unable to connect to him.

The other two love-stories, unfortunately, take a back seat. I wish writer Shibani Bhatija had invested more on Aditya-Sonakshi and Sanjay-Madhuri's track. Those two stories had so much more to explore. Aditya, in fact, is pitch perfect as the righteous, lonesome Dev who is stuck between his two wives- one of whom he dearly loves. Sonakshi too holds her own in the limited screen time that she has. It's a treat to watch Madhuri and Sanjay on screen together albeit for a brief period. Wish they had more scenes together! Kunal Khemmu makes an impressive cameo as well.

The actors are all good but their performances are ultimately marred by very sketchy writing. Despite a stretched first half, the story fails to establish why Roop and Zafar are drawn towards each other. The second half redeems the film to a great extent where the story picks up with a very well shot climax.

The makers take copious amount of liberty in telling a period-saga where outskirts of Lahore have mountains, streams and rocky shores similar to Ladakh and where the state of Rajputana (erstwhile Rajasthan) has meadows and snow-capped mountains in the background. There is also a bizarre scene where Varun Dhawan takes on a bull in a arena in what appears to be in Afganistan!

In the end, 'Kalank' suffers from a Bhansali hangover- it even copies a few scenes from his films- and while there is no harm in doing that, the story is not as vividly told as Bhansali skillfully does. And that's where 'Kalank' falters.

'Kalank' visually stuns, has good performances from its actors, but it doesn't stay with you for too long which a film of this scale ideally should.

'Kalank' review: Alia Bhatt-Varun Dhawan's tragic love story is visually stunning but fails to connect

Meghna Gulzar's 'Raazi' may have earned critical and box office success when it released in 2018 but it went completely unnoticed during the National Film Awards that were announced in. Writer Harinder Sikka, on whose book, the film was based- feels that 'Raazi' did not win any award because the makers tampered with the original story.

"Meghna did a blunder with 'Raazi' which is why she did not get a National Award. In fact, I was backstabbed by them(Meghna Gulzar and Gulzar)," says Sikka as he spoke exclusively to WION recently.

Based on the author's bestseller 'Calling Sehmat', the film had Alia Bhatt playing Sehmat an undercover spy from India who marries into a Pakistani Army family in order to relay information to India, prior to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

Sikka's book was based on a real-life Kashmiri woman who dedicated her life to India. But the author feels that while the book sends out this important message- the film's ending completely derails the message that he had intended to convey.

"Meghna made a blunder with that ending in 'Raazi'," Sikka said and added, "In the book- when Sehmat comes back to India- she goes in front of the tricolour and salutes and thanks to the motherland for having her back."

"The film should have also had a similar ending. Instead, Meghna made her comeback as a depressed woman. It seemed that a Kashmiri woman had done a blunder of sorts," the author added.

Sikka feels that had the ending been according to the book- 'Raazi' would have definitely won National awards. "I had told people soon after watching the film that it will not win the National Awards. That's what happened eventually. With 'Calling Sehmat' I was sending a message that Kashmiris are not traitors. But in the film, you brought her back as a depressed person. That was a negative ending."

Sikka states that he had promised Gulzar to let his daughter direct the film. His only condition was that Alia Bhatt should play the lead role. "I appointed Meghna for the film and signed the dotted line only when they agreed to my conditions. The screenplay was to be cleared by me. I took an active part but at the same time trusted Meghna as she had done a lot of research around the book and impressed me with her talk."

The author says eventually when the film was completed, he was not invited for a preview screening. "The makers brought the film prior to the release. Showed it in Imperial Hotel, Delhi to senior army officers. This was 2 months before the release of the film- but I was not invited. I learnt much later. Had I been invited I would not have let this happen. I watched it after the film got released. Meghna kept telling me that I will show it to you but it never happened. She knew that if I had watched, I would have raised objection about the ending."

The author, whose first produced film 'Nanak Shah Fakir' won three National Awards in 2016, feels that the ending of 'Raazi' completely went against its case in front of the National awards jury. "The last scene made all the difference in the mindset of the people," he added.

The writer, whose new book 'Vichhoda' is set in partition era, spent 8 years researching on 'Calling Sehmat' and felt cheated when the film did not end the way he had envisioned it. "A writer is like a mother to a story. You disown that mother- you ruin the child. That's what they did with 'Raazi'."

Sikka though adds that the film was a commercial success because the first 1 hour of the film was gripping and Alia Bhatt delivered a compelling performance. "She put the film together through her innocence through her eyes, through her looks. She was fantastic."

He alleges that the director did not speak to him post the film's release.

Did he express his concerns to Gulzar later, we asked. Instead of answering, the author asked "I am eager to know- who tried to delay the publishing of 'Calling Sehmat'? Who tried to stop my inclusion at the Jaipur Literature Festival?"

The writer states that what happened with him is a common practice in Bollywood where once the story rights are given to makers, writers seldom have a say in the screenplay. But he feels that the practise needs to end and for that questions need to be raised.

"No one questions them openly- Sehmat gave me 'Vichhoda', she means so much to me. If I don’t raise questions- this practice will continue in Bollywood."

His new book 'Vichhoda' which released in November 2019, will also get a screen adaptation soon. Learning from his past mistakes, Sikka states he will not trust anyone too blindly with 'Vichhoda's' screenplay and see to it that makers remain true to the original story. While the book has been receiving a positive response, the director is already onto his next few books. He has already submitted the final draft of one book, and is on the verge of completing 'Remembering Sehmat' - a sequel to 'Calling Sehmat'.

An ex-Navy officer, Sikka has served as a journalist during the Kargil war and is now a communication director of a leading corporate conglomerate. He writes to spread the message of peace, he says. "I took 20 lakhs less when I sold the rights of 'Calling Sehmat' to Junglee Pictures. I gave all the money to charitable organisations. I don't write for the money- which is why it hurt more when they fiddled with such a powerful story."

With the big blaze in the Australian state of Victoria destroying the flora and fauna of the area inch-by-inch, several Bollywood actresses including Bhumi Pednekar, Dia Mirza and Alia Bhatt are taking to social media platforms to create awareness and share their concern over the major environmental degradation. Bhumi Pednekar, who recently launched her pan India campaign of `Climate Warrior,` reposted a post about the bushfires from climate activist Greta Thunberg and explained how it could be related to the current climate emergency in the world. View this post on Instagram #Repost @gretathunberg with @get_repost ・・・ Australia is on fire. And the summer there has only just begun. 2019 was a year of record heat and record drought. Today the temperature outside Sydney was 48,9°C. 500 million (!!) animals are estimated dead because of the bushfires. Over 20 people have died and thousands of homes have burned to ground. The fires have spewed 2/3 of the nations national annual CO2 emissions, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. The smoke has covered glaciers in distant New Zealand (!) making them warm and melt faster because of the albedo effect. And yet. All of this still has not resulted in any political action. Because we still fail to make the connection between the climate crisis and increased extreme weather events and nature disasters like the #AustraliaFires That has to change. And it has to change now. My thoughts are with the people of Australia and those affected by these devastating fires. A post shared by Bhumi✨ (@bhumipednekar) on Jan 4, 2020 at 9:18pm PST × Actor Dia Mirza, who has always been vocal about social issues, also shared a post about the devastating disaster on her account. The actor shared a picture of a seemingly helpless koala bear held by fire security officials and penned a long caption urging the people to act on the situation."This is also real. This is also happening. This must stop. We can stop this. Come together. Stay united. Act on climate. Invest in nature. Secure/protect forests. Grow indigenous trees. Empower organisations and individuals who make a difference. Learn the facts. Don`t be scared. Don`t run. Don`t hide. Face it. Feel it. Spend time with children. HEAR them," reads Mirza`s caption. Pataudi scion Soha Ali Khan shared a series of informative pictures about the growling forest fires and wrote: "It is hard to imagine that while we are on holiday in Sydney having such a wonderful time in the parks and farms, there are catastrophic fires blazing in many parts of Australia, not so far from us." "People have lost their lives, their homes and millions of animals have been killed. In case you have only just started reading about the fires in Australia, here is what you need to know about them and how you can help," further read her caption. With temperatures soaring at 48 degrees C, the bush fires are raging and difficult to contain as they are far too big and are now creating their own weather patterns causing lightening strikes that start new fires," read a part of her caption. Dandekar further urged her fans to donate for helping those affected by the bushfires. She shared the link to the donation in her bio and mentioned the same in her caption. Today blood red skies loom over Australia in what is the most apocalyptic catastrophe this nation has faced! With temperatures soaring at 48 degrees C, the bush fires are raging and difficult to contain as they are far too big and are now creating their own weather patterns causing lightening strikes that start new fires. The smoke plumes are 14kms high & have reached New Zealand melting glaciers. Areas like the town of Eden and others have been evacuated as they can’t be saved. Roads are closed due to fallen trees & thick smoke. Fires in Victoria and NSW will most likely join and burn for 8 more weeks!!! 95 percent of koalas gone 😢😢500 million animals dead 💔an area the size of Belgium has been decimated ,that’s 5 million hectares of land gone and it shows no signs of slowing down in the peak of an Australian summer. To think of the devastation across this beautiful country is just heartbreaking.. this is tragic on a major scale! To the firefighters who have fought tirelessly and to their families who have stood by them selflessly .. nothing but respect and gratitude 🙏🏽 appreciate you and applaud your bravery! To those who would like to help there is a link in my bio of sites where you can donate.. my thoughts and prayers to everyone effected 💔🙏🏽 A post shared by Shibani Dandekar (@shibanidandekar) on Jan 4, 2020 at 11:42pm PST × On Instagram, Alia Bhatt too shared posts of support groups that are working to rescue animals caught in the fire. The raging wildfire that has already destroyed around 12 million acres of land and 1500 homes is still far from coming under control. 23 people have given their lives to the crisis, reported Fox News. Several of Hollywood stars have also been raising funds for the Australian bushfire. Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, P!NK and Russell Crowe have urged people to contribute to rehabilitate the victims.

Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Raazi’ could have gotten a National Award thinks author Harinder Sikka, on whose book the film is based.

Harinder Sikka’s book titled ‘Calling Sehmat’ was reimagined for the big screen by Meghna Gulzar who gave us a beautiful film ‘Raazi’ that highlighted the story of a Kashmiri girl Sehmat who crossed borders from India to Pakistan to spy for the nation. It was a real-life incident during the 1971 India-Pakistan war.

Harinder pointed out that he was not happy about the omission of ‘Tricolour scene’ in the film that found its place in the book. He said, "In the book, the story ends with Sehmat saluting the Tricolour. If the film had the same ending, the film would have won the National Award. I told the director that you have stopped the film from getting a National Award by cutting the Tricolour scene in the film.”

“Though this was done by the wishes of the filmmakers, but I still have resentment over it,” he added.

Talking about the book, Harinder said, "I was a person who had never written a book, and my first book 'Calling Sehmat' sold around five lakh copies. Sehmat taught me how to live. We very easily paint all Kashmiri Muslims with the same brush, saying that Kashmiris are terrorists. We have to understand that no mother wants her son to carry a stone in his hand. Terrorism has been being funded there for so many years but there have also been Kashmiris like Sehmat who gave up their entire families for the country. Much has changed since the abrogation of Article 370. My next book is 'Section 370', and Sehmat is the inspiration again."

Released by UK-based Eastern Eye, topping the annual list is our very own Alia Bhatt who has been making headlines with her acting, choice of films and of course her relationship with Ranbir Kapoor. Alia was crowned Asia’s sexiest woman of the year. Speaking on the accolade, Alia said, “I’ve always believed that true beauty goes beyond what is seen and that is what really counts,” and added, “We’ll grow older, our appearances will change, but a good heart will always keep you beautiful and that is really what we should focus on.” The list is based on online votes, media coverage of an actor in a year, their impact and the buzz they generate on various social media platforms. On Alia Bhatt winning the title, founder of the list Asjad Nazir said, “There is no one on a bigger role than unstoppable star Alia Bhatt and nothing will prevent her from dominating the next decade of commercial Hindi cinema as the queen of Bollywood. More than a movie star she is a powerful symbol of girl power, who is a representation of the empowered modern-day woman.” Some days back, Hrithik Roshan was named sexiest Asian man in the list.
