Perhaps one of the most anticipated films of 2019, Abhishek Varman's 'Kalank' sank without a trace despite the hype around it.

The film, produced by Dharma Productions, was Karan Johar's dream project and had an impressive line up of actors in it. Yet, the film gained mostly bad reviews and earned little over Rs 80 crore at the box office.

Now for the first time, Johar, while speaking to DNA, has opened up about the film's failure. "To me, when 'Kalank' fails, it is my failure. I’m the older one, I’m the wiser one. I’m the more knowledgeable person about what works and what doesn’t. If the film has faltered, it is largely my responsibility and my blame. Of course, no one person can take the blame, but I choose to because I felt that the material was something I was aware of for not one year but 15 years.”

The filmmaker said the film was a learning experience. “There are two ways I could have gone about this. I could have sunk in this failure or I could have questioned, ‘Why?’ Or I could have said, ‘Why did this happen and let me learn from this.’ Let this be a new 2.0 feeling where I am a lot more analytical. I am putting my projects through a lot more trials and tribulations before it is out there to an audience. When you fail and learn from it, that to me is a success. I will never look at Kalank as a failure. I will look at it as a success because it has taught me how not to fail like this.”

Varun Dhawan reveals 'Kalank' failure hit him hard

A few months back, when Rishi Kapoor declared he was going to the US for medical treatment, speculations were rife that the actor was diagnosed with cancer. The family has never spoken in details about the nature of his illness and all fans have gotten to see are some photos that his wife, Neetu Kapoor has been sharing on Instagram from time to time.

On Tuesday though, filmmaker Rahul Rawail put speculations to rest as he posted on Facebook, 'Rishi Kapoor (Chintu) is cancer free!'. Rawail is a close friend of Kapoor and the director even posted an old photo of the two in his post.

The Kapoors have been tight-lipped about Rishi Kapoor's illness and treatment so far. On New Year's though, Neetu Kapoor had slightly hinted about the senior actor's illness in an Instagram post.

"Happy 2019 no resolutions only wishes this year !!! Less pollution traffic!! Hope in future cancer is only a zodiac sign !!! No hatred less poverty loads of love togetherness happiness n most imp. Good health(sic)"

Ever since it was announced that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is planning a film with Salman Khan after we last saw them together in ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, there has been a buzz around the project.

Titled ‘Inshallah’ the film pairs Salman and Alia Bhatt together for the first time.

When this was announced, many spoke on social media about the age-gap between the two and how they were not sold on the idea. Well now we have details on what the two might be doing in the film.

Fresh reports suggest that Salman will play a 40-year-old man while Alia Bhatt will play a younger actress who is in her 20s. The two will eventually romance in the film but the plot would be very different from what we expect. But isn’t that a given, since it’s a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film!

Salman will reportedly play a businessman while Alia will be an actress in the movie. A Mumbai Mirror report quoted a source as saying, “Salman is a businessman in his mid-40s. The character is reminiscent of his turn in his 1997 romcom Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai. Alia plays a 20-something aspiring actress. All the factors, including age gap, have been taken into consideration. The story will justify the teaming up of two actors, from different generations, on a romantic journey.”

The tabloid further reported that the film’s shoot will begin in September and it might be shot in locations like Haridwar, Rishikesh and Varanasi, apart from the US. “The locations under consideration are Haridwar, Rishikesh and Varanasi,” the source informed, adding that Bhansali and his leads will also fly to the US for a major schedule. “The crew was contemplating on several places, including Europe, but settled on the US after several rounds of recce. Salman and Alia will be there in winters,” the source added.

The film will be co-produced by Salman Khan Films and Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions.

Meanwhile, see posters of Salman Khan's upcoming film 'Bharat' here.

A 40-year-old Salman Khan to romance Alia Bhatt, 20, in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Inshallah'?

Perhaps one of the biggest draws of Abhishek Varman's 'Kalank' is the fact that it reunites '90's popular pair Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit on screen after 22 years. And while fans are excited to see this reunion onscreen, Sanjay Dutt admitted that he was nervous initially to share screen space with Madhuri.

In an interview to a daily, the actor revealed how the two bonded over their children while working on 'Kalank'. "It was great to work with her again. I was a little nervous, but she made things easy. She's got terrific command as an actor. We spoke about our kids. In fact, I made my children [Shahraan and Iqra] meet her when they dropped by on the sets," the actor said.

The two actors were rumoured to be dating in the 1990s. The actress eventually married Dr Sriram Nene and the couple has two sons. Dutt, meanwhile, married Manyata and the couple has twins- a boy and a girl.

Interestingly, when Madhuri was asked if it was awkward to share screen space with Dutt, the actress said, "We have worked together earlier. So there was no re-bonding or awkwardness or anything. I have worked with Anil Kapoor ji (in Total Dhamaal) and Sanjay after a long time and it was great. There is a kind of comfort and I know how the scenes will be, how the action and reaction is going to be."

Madhuri plays Bahaar Begum in the film- a role that was initially offered to Sridevi. After her demise, the role went to Madhuri Dixit.

'Kalank' has been produced by Karan Johar and also features Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha and Aditya Roy Kapur.

Sanjay Dutt on working with Madhuri Dixit in 'Kalank': I was a little nervous, but she made things easy

Alia Bhatt is one of the finest actors that India has seen in recent times, loved by both her fans and critics alike. Having played a variety of characters from a student in ‘Student of The Year’ to a Bihari migrant worker in ‘Udta Punjab’, a Muslim girl in ‘Gully Boy’ to Indian spy in ‘Raazi’, Alia has a wide filmography that most can’t boast of at such a young age.

Alia will next be seen in the role of Roop in ‘Kalank’ that is slated to release on April 17. She stars with an ensemble cast that includes Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Varun Dhawan, Sonakshi Sinha and Aditya Roy Kapur. Aditya also spoke to WION about his future movie plans and more.

In conversation with WION, Alia spoke of her role in ‘Kalank’, how she trained for the classical hit number ‘Ghar More Pardesiya’ and collaborating with Varun Dhawan again. The entire star cast barring Sanjay Dutt was in Delhi to promote their film.

In the film, Alia plays the role of a girl possibly torn between love and responsibilities as she is shown in the trailer getting married to Aditya Roy Kapur while being in love with Varun Dhawan. Reflecting on her character, she said, “Her story is very different. It's a very layered cake with a lot of different icings, you have to scoop it one after another. You can only do that once you have seen the film.”

Portraying a girl from the pre-independence era, Alia had to undergo a major transformation to think like Roop, as revealed by her. She not only dresses like no other character portrayed by her before but also has a different vibe.

Alia stunned us all with her dancing skills in the film as the song ‘Ghar More Pardesiya’ released earlier this month. In a never-seen-before avatar complete with chunri on her head, vintage jewellery and steps of a dance pro, Alia took close to a year to train for it. She said, “It was a very nerve-wracking experience for me because I have said this before, I am not trained in any dance form, especially not Indian classical. I had to do this classical, semi-classical number. I trained for like about a year, basic Kathak training. But I did this particular choreography for about two and a half months every day.”

“Even during my sleep, in the bathroom, while I was eating, I was dancing everywhere possible. On the set honestly, it was such an overwhelming experience. I was just very excited to be there,” she added.

Being on the same set as Madhuri Dixit who is known for her dancing skills, Alia said she took some tips from the veteran. She revealed, “There were moments where I was looking at mam, and I had this massive question mark at my body, she was obviously seeing through it. She was giving me little tips but one thing she said that I won't forget was that ‘next time you have to do this, you come to me three days before, I'll teach you some tricks’.”

You can only do that once you have seen the film.” View this post on Instagram Kalank Title Track - Out Tomorrow ♥️ A post shared by Alia 🌸 (@aliaabhatt) on Mar 28, 2019 at 2:23am PDT × Portraying a girl from the pre-independence era, Alia had to undergo a major transformation to think like Roop, as revealed by her. But I did this particular choreography for about two and a half months every day.” “Even during my sleep, in the bathroom, while I was eating, I was dancing everywhere possible. She was giving me little tips but one thing she said that I won't forget was that ‘next time you have to do this, you come to me three days before, I'll teach you some tricks’.” View this post on Instagram #GharMorePardesiya today at 12:30pm❤️ A post shared by Alia 🌸 (@aliaabhatt) on Mar 17, 2019 at 11:15pm PDT × Alia then looked at Madhuri and said, “I'll come to you before I start work on ‘Takht’.” Alia reunites with Varun for the nth number of time, having done several films including her debut with him. Alia Bhatt will not be casting her vote in Lok Sabha elections 2019. Here's why

Kangana Ranaut is still miffed with Alia Bhatt, it seems. The 'Manikarnika' star has unleashed fresh round vitriol towards Bhatt.

While the world has lauded Bhatt's performance in Zoya Akhtar's film 'Gully Boy', Bhatt hasn't found a fan in Ranaut who termed her act as 'mediocre'.

In an online poll conducted by BollywoodLife, Ranaut's performance in 'Manikarnika' got maximum number votes making her the Best Actress of this first quarter of 2019. Alia's performance in 'Gully Boy' was a close second. When Kangana was asked how she felt at defeating Alia in the poll, the actress said, I am embarrassed...What is there to beat in Gully Boy performance ....same snappy muh phat girl...”

“(It’s just) Bollywood’s idea of a fiery girl, woman empowerment and good acting, spare me this embarrassment, please. Media has taken filmy kids love too far...stop pampering mediocre work or else bar will never be raised,” the Manikarnika actress further said.

Interestingly this is not the first time that Alia has been at the receiving end of Kangana's caustic comments. Earlier, Kangana had said that Alia needed to grow a spine. "I suggested that she (Alia) grows some spine and supports an important film about woman empowerment and nationalism...if she doesn’t have a voice of her own and her existence is all about being KJo’s puppet then I don’t consider her successful.”

Kangana has been miffed with not just Alia but quite a few Bollywood A-listers like Ranbir Kapoor, Aamir Khan and Karan Johar for not supporting or lauding her film 'Manikarnika'.

Madhuri said, “Alia and Varun can easily play those characters. Alia is a very good actress. She can get into any role and make it her own. So yeah, definitely. They’ll be good.”

Alia when heard this, said, "Wow! That's a first! Call up Sooraj Barjatya Sir, somebody. Unhi ko banaana chahiye...I don't think anybody can be Nisha and Prem - that was too iconic a film. I feel it's too gracious and generous of ma'am to say this.”

In an interview with DNA, Madhuri had initially said, “I feel it depends on the way the characters are written. I feel our writers are very important. The way they will write the scenes and the dialogues will determine the chemistry between two actors. Just because you know each other, you can't create that chemistry. It has to be well written and directed. For me, anybody can play that role.”

Alia is a very good actress. She can get into any role and make it her own. So yeah, definitely. They’ll be good.” Alia when heard this, said, "Wow! That's a first! Call up Sooraj Barjatya Sir, somebody. Unhi ko banaana chahiye...I don't think anybody can be Nisha and Prem - that was too iconic a film. I feel it's too gracious and generous of ma'am to say this.” In an interview with DNA, Madhuri had initially said, “I feel it depends on the way the characters are written. I feel our writers are very important. The way they will write the scenes and the dialogues will determine the chemistry between two actors. Just because you know each other, you can't create that chemistry. It has to be well written and directed. For me, anybody can play that role.” Madhuri Dixit will be seen with Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt along with Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha and Aditya Roy Kapur in the film ‘Kalank’.
For those who have been waiting for SS Rajamouli to announce his next project, there is news. After the hugely successful 'Baahubali' series, the ace director is making a film with top Telugu stars Ram Charan and Junior NTR.

Titled 'RRR,' the film would also feature Bollywood actors Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt and British actress Daisy Edgar Jones in important roles and is reportedly going to have a budget of Rs 350 crore-Rs 400 crore, which makes it probably the most expensive film being made in the Telugu film industry. The film's budegt is at par with the combined budget of two Baahubali films that Rajamouli made.

The film is a "fictional tale" based on the lives of two freedom fighters in early 20th century-- Alluri Sitarama Raju and Kumram Bheem.

"It's a completely fictional tale about two real heroes. That is what the story is about," Rajamouli told reporters at ab event on Thursday.

Throwing more light, he said, there are similarities in the lives of Sitarama Raju and Kumram Bheem.

Born in 1897 in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Sitarama Raju led a historic rebellion against British rule. After a relentless chase, he was caught and martyred in 1924. Kumram Bheem was born in 1901 in Adilabad region in Telangana and fought against the then Nizam rule.

"The two great warriors, who took part in the freedom struggle, who never met, had no connection, what if they met in times unknown to us, if they were an inspiration to each other, how they fought against the British or the Nizam rule, if that is formed on the basis of their friendship. I found it very interesting and exciting," Rajamouli said.

The film would be made on a large scale budget and had required a lot of research, causing delay in launching the project, he added.

Ajay Devgan has agreed to do a very strong role in the film and is excited to be part of the venture, he noted.

Alia Bhatt, who would be paired opposite Ram Charan is excited about the film.

Daisy Edgar Jones would be playing opposite Junior NTR, grandson of legendary N T Rama Rao.

The film would be made in multiple languages and RRR would be common the title. It will have a different expansion in each language.

"We are inviting suggestions from public for the expansions of the title. If we find something better than what we thought then we will go for it," Rajamouli said.

The film would be released worldwide in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam on July 30, 2020.
