Kangana Ranaut's recent comments on how Bollywood needs to be voicing its political views openly has got rather different opinions from celebrities. Alia Bhatt who was accused by the actress for not speaking over contemporary issues has said that she would like to keep her opinions private. But actors like John Abraham have spoken in support of Ranaut.

During the success party of 'Manikarnika', Kangana had called Alia and her 'Gully Boy' co-star Ranveer Singh's comments of being apolitical "irresponsible" and lashed out at the duo for refusing to speak on politics.

At an event on Wednesday, Alia was asked to respond to Ranaut's statement. The 'Gully Boy' star took a diplomatic stand and said, "I definitely don't have the ability to speak as candidly as Kangana does, and I really do respect her for that and maybe in a way she is right, sometimes we do hold back."

"My dad also says that there are already so many opinions in the world that it can do with one less opinion. So, I have an opinion but I'll keep it to myself. But, kudos to her as she genuinely speaks really well," she added.

Meanwhile, John Abraham came out in support of the actress and said, "If they (referring to film industry personalities) are politically aware, then I think Kangana definitely is (right). She has got a voice and I think you must take a stand if you are politically aware."

Abraham was speaking at the trailer launch event of his new film 'Romeo Akbar Walter'.

He added, "So unless you are aware about what's happening then only make a statement. If you are not aware, don't make a statement," the actor added.

One of the most anticipated films of the years, 'Brahmastra, has been in the making for quite some time.
By any standards, 'Gully Boy' is a brilliant film. It is well written, taut and acting by Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt and rest of the cast was effortless. 'Gully Boy' represents a new age cinema where music, subversion, social struggle and lust to survive the harsh reality of modern urban life - all comes together.

Almost 90 per cent of the important characters of the film are Muslims. This only provides a context for the film and does not become a driving force for the characters in the drama. The struggle of Safeena Firdausi, a character played by Alia Bhatt, remains universal. Her struggle to enjoy late night parties and indulge in make-up could that be of any Lakshmi from a Hindu household or Harpreet Kaur from a Sikh family. Her love, possessiveness for Murad and temper tantrum is not shown as a result of her past or upbringing but presented as a fact of her personality. Safeena kisses but it is not eroticised. She does not come out as an exotic Muslim female out of a closet.

Even in the case of Murad, his quest to survive, love and struggle flow from confidence in himself and his talent. Bollywood films on Muslims, most of the times, end up creating dark-eyed stereotypes of Muslims who are either motivated by religious indoctrination or sense of victimhood and marginalisation from the political mainstream.

It leads to the creation of a Muslim as a familiar exotic in the current political narrative. A homogenous mass with a singular entity. The film shatters this narrative. Murad does not drink but it doesn’t mean he is a conservative. Booze is not used to demonstrate his creative depth. He smokes which is permissible in his religious context but does not typify him as a Muslim.

In this film, the victimhood is portrayed as a matter of fact and does not flow from religion. When Murad’s father Aftab Shakir, played by Vijay Raaz, tells Murad that it is very difficult to get a job as a Muslim, it comes as a statement of fact.

The film does not have good Muslims or bad Muslims. The Muslims are similar to Hindus and Sikhs married to their vices and desire. Murad’s father is insensitive, and Sher’s (Siddhant Chaturvedi) father is a raging alcoholic and, in both, the common thread is poverty and life on margins. This interplay between poverty and plenty makes this film different, which is summed up brilliantly in the song, 'paas hokar bhee door hain.'

Even the second marriage of Murad’s father is less to do with the number of marriages prescribed in Islam but more to do with lust, infidelity, patriarchy and man-woman relationship. It is not what without significance that in a scene, Murad’s mother Razia openly shouts back at Aftab he should not crib to her about her frigidness as he never knew how to touch her.

The scene, which could have been shot by a posh couple, shatters the myth of man-woman issues based on class.

'Gully Boy' neither glamourise poverty nor celebrates it. It is presented as a matter of fact. The movie is inspired by real-life characters but is completely a work of fiction.

Kalki Koechlin's character could have been more fleshed out. The film presents the crushing reality of living in Mumbai but also shows the spirit of an individual which can be uncrushable. The soundtrack rocks and so does the film.
High on the success of her latest film ‘Gully Boy’, Alia Bhatt might next be seen with Tiger Shroff in his student-drama film -- ‘Student of The Year 2’. Watch him shoot for a song from the film. Alia will only feature in the film for a special song that she is supposed to shoot with Tiger. According to a report published in Mumbai Mirror, Alia will shoot her small portion and a song with the actor next week. The team has reportedly started preparations for it. A source told the tabloid, “Farah Khan will be choreographing the song which only features Alia. The film’s team is figuring out ways to incorporate her co-stars from the first film, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra, in the sequel. Both actors are expected to shoot their portions in the coming weeks too. Alia and Tiger’s song will be shot over one week on a grand set that is being put up at a suburban studio.” ‘Student of The Year 2’ already has two new faces, Tara Sutaria and Ananya Panday -- both who will debut with this film. It will also have international star Will Smith in a cameo role.
The Central Board of Film Certification is at it again. One of the most anticipated films of the season, Zoya Akhtar's 'Gully Boy' has run into trouble with the Censor board.

According to media reports, CBFC has makers to shorten a kissing scene featuring the film's leads Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. It has further directed the makers to omit a close-up shot of the scene as well.

Reports state that the 13 seconds that have been snipped have been replaced with a wider shot.

The board has made four other changes in the film including removal of the name Royal Stag, an alcohol brand, which is incidentally the film's brand partner. It is perhaps for the first time that the Censor board has removed a brand partner's name from the film. The board has also beeped out cuss words.

This is not the first time that the Indian Censor Board has played the moral police. Earlier, when Pahlaj Nihalani was the chief of the board, several Indian and International films faced arbitrary cuts. CBFC is now headed by adman and lyricist Prasoon Joshi.

Zoya Akhtar's 'Gully Boy' premiered last week at the Berlin Film Festival where it received a positive response from audience and critics alike.
'Gully Boy' is a hit among celebs as 'Fast & Furious' star Michelle Rodriguez calls it 'beautiful'

Actor Ranveer Singh said India could be on the cusp of a musical revolution with the kind of Hindustani hip-hop that is the subject of his new movie premiering at the Berlin Film Festival.

"Gully Boy", directed by India's Zoya Akhtar, tells the fictional tale of Murad (Singh), a student who lives in a slum and ends up temporarily substituting for his injured father as chauffeur for a wealthy family.

He discovers a talent for rapping and uses it to vent his anger about poverty and the chasm between rich and poor, writing lines about babies cowering next to skyscrapers and wealthy people's cars being big as poor people's homes.

"This film is something that takes a genre of music that has essentially been underground in India so far and brings it to the mainstream," Singh said.

"I want this to be the beginning of something because I really think Hindustani hip-hop is a revolution. It's more than just music. It's a musical and social revolution," he said.

Singh said he grew up listening to rap music and it "feels amazing" to have recorded five songs for the film's soundtrack.

The coming-of-age film depicts a young man who refuses to accept what his father has taught him - that he cannot afford big dreams and should get a stable office job - and who defies class conventions by secretly dating Safeena (Alia Bhatt), a doctor's daughter.

Safeena is confident and violently attacks potential love rivals while Murad is a more sensitive and reserved character.

"Traditionally our films and gender dynamics are structured very differently," Singh said. "So that's an aspect of our film that we're very proud of."

He said he initially wanted to become an actor to be a virtuous hero with big muscles who beats other men up and stands up for what is right, but Akhtar had brought out a part of him on screen that was usually reserved for his friends and family.

"Zoya kind of very literally and metaphorically peels away all of those layers to kind of tap into a very real, very authentic side of me ... a little bit more quiet, more reserved, more introverted and more internally feeling sensitive, vulnerable," he said.

The movie - shot in Mumbai - features slum dwellers picking through rubbish, abandoned children preparing drugs to earn their keep and homes made from corrugated iron alongside wealthy Indians attending posh parties, modern skyscrapers and a group of camera-wielding British tourists visiting a slum.

It is one of around 400 films screening at this year's Berlinale festival, which runs until Feb. 17.

'No Fathers in Kashmir' has been facing trouble with the censor board for the last 6 months ever since it sent its application in July. The board viewed the film only in October. The film is a love story of two 16 year olds set against the backdrop of Kashmir who are individually in search for their missing fathers. The film according to the filmmakers and its supporters has no objectionable content and thus have questioned its A certification.
Ashvin has earlier won two National Awards for his films 'Inshallah Kashmir' and 'Inshallah Football', both of which were earlier banned and later awarded. The filmmakers have continually requested the board to give it a U/A certification to allow the film to be viewed by a larger audience citing that film is a story that deserves to be viewed by all.
The dispute is still ongoing and the matter is yet to be resolved, leaving the filmmakers in a lurk with no immediate sigh of relief to get a clearance for a deserving release. Gully Boy: Ranveer Singh's song 'Apna Time Aayega' will give you an adrenaline rush

Actor-director Pooja Bhatt believes women start blooming in their forties but somehow they are not represented correctly on the screen whereas men continue to play characters half their age.

Pooja, who is returning to the silver screen after a gap of 18 years with 'Sadak 2', had said goodbye to acting but then it pulled her back.

"I had said bye-bye to acting in a way but once an actor always an actor. Life has got other plans for me. Like I did not want to be an actor, I wanted to be an architect or astronaut and 'Daddy' happened and the rest is history.

I felt I was happy being in the back, launching people like Sunny Leone, repackaging Richa Chadda, John Abraham but life had other plans and it includes 'Sadak 2' and a web series," Pooja told PTI in an interview.

Known for her films such as 'Daddy', 'Sadak' and 'Zakhm', Pooja will reprise her role in the sequel of 'Sadak', that marks the return of her filmmaker father Mahesh Bhatt to direction.

Pooja, whose last film as an actor was 'Everybody Says I'm Fine' in 2001, will also be seen in a web series based on Abheek Barua's book called 'A City of Death'. Set in Kolkata, the story revolves around an alcoholic female cop in her 40s, who is sent to investigate a crime of passion.

'Sadak 2', Sanjay Dutt and Pooja will be seen playing the older couple while Pooja's younger sister Alia Bhatt and Aditya Roy Kapur are the young pairs.

"I am glad when I am coming back to acting I am getting to play my age," Pooja said.

"One thing I do not see happening is women of certain age being represented correctly. We have to evolve conceptually. Men don't age in India. Women who are younger then them are suddenly playing the role of a mother," she said.

The actor said she also played the role of Ajay Devgn's mother in 1999 film 'Zakhm' because the role demanded it but she would not play the role of a mother just for the sake of it.

As an actor and producer, Pooja said she has always taken risks.

"One woman who I think is great is Vidya Balan, her casting in 'The Dirty Picture' was very exciting.
Let's break new grounds, let's think beyond the usual. Why can't a woman who plays a mother, also play a lover, or why a lover can't play a villain?"

Citing the example of American actor-producer Sharon Stone, Pooja, 46, said why can't writers write about women beyond a certain age.

"Where is India's Sharon Stone? How come women in Hollywood come to their own, post their 40s? I feel that's when you actually bloom... Why are men allowed to come to their own at 40s and 50s and women are expected to bury themselves at this age," she added.

Pooja said, personally, her 40s have been more exciting than her 30s.

"I found my feet in my 40s, got divorced at 40, two years of drinking and then at 42, I became sober. My 30s were the most boring phase. When you are in your 40s, you know your mind, body, you know what you want to do and you are not impressed with the usual bulls**t that the world gives you. You don't care about people's opinion and you do what you want to do," she said.

Pooja is currently promoting her film 'Cabaret', which has been in the making for some time and was supposed to release in 2016. It got delayed due to her differences with the producers over its release.

"One of our partners wanted to minimise the cost of print and advertising and I was not in agreement with it. We decided to not release it then. The two years time period then seemed difficult, long and dark but the universe was conspiring for us to give it a right platform. At that time if we would have released it in theatres, the film would have come and gone and nobody would have known about it."

'Cabaret' is streaming on ZEE5 from January 5 and the actor-producer is happy with its digital release.

"Our standards keep changing. Cinema hall is a cinema hall but it is not the holy grail anymore. My phone has become my cinema hall and we need to understand and respect this new medium. Who dreamt that 20 years ago, there will be digital streaming? It is like a new dawn. I am glad I am a part of it," she added.

Directed by Kaustav Narayan Niyogi, the film revolves around a bar dancer, played by Richa Chadha.

Why can't a woman who plays a mother, also play a lover, or why a lover can't play a villain?" Citing the example of American actor-producer Sharon Stone, Pooja, 46, said why can't writers write about women beyond a certain age. At that time if we would have released it in theatres, the film would have come and gone and nobody would have known about it." 'Cabaret' is streaming on ZEE5 from January 5 and the actor-producer is happy with its digital release.

Ranveer Singh, Vicky Kaushal, Alia Bhatt and others feature in selfie of the year with PM Modi

Ranveer Singh-Alia Bhatt-Kalki Koechlin starrer ‘Gully Boy’ saw its makers release the first teaser of the film and we are simply bowled over.

The video does a fine job at introducing the characters of the trio and offers a sneak peek into the chemistry shared by them. Ranveer’s character has that of the “voice of the streets” who raps throughout the teaser, telling the fans that they will introduce India to the concept of “asli (real) hip hop”. See posters of the film here.

Ranveer lives in a slum of Mumbai, where he hones his skill of a rapper -- reflected through his lyrics that tell the story of his real problems and mundane life. Then there’s some romance between Ranveer and Alia and then Ranveer and Kalki. We wonder who he will end up with or if with any at all!

‘Gully Boy’ is also based on the lives of real people, particularly the rapper Divine, who is one of the most popular voices to emerge from the Mumbai rap scene. The film is named after one of his songs, and Ranveer’s rap suggests that it will borrow elements from his life, as well - in particular, Divine’s relationship with his mother.

In a previous interview, when Divine was asked whether he felt that Ranveer would do a good job of his life story, he said, “Ranveer is the man,” and added, “He’s the best man to do the movie and he’s killed it.” ‘Gully Boy’ will be screened in the Berlinale Special section of the Berlin Film festival, which will be held between February 7 and 17, 2019. Co-produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment, ‘Gully Boy’ will be released on February 14, 2019.
