Australia may continue to challenge for major trophies thanks to a golden generation of established stars, but former all-rounder Shane Watson believes the country's long-term future is far from guaranteed. Watson has expressed concern about the quality of coaching and player development available to Australia's next generation, warning that the system is not as strong as the one that produced him and many of the country's modern greats. While backing Australia's current crop of senior players to remain competitive in major tournaments, Watson said his biggest worry lies beyond the present squad. "My biggest worry about Australian cricket is the depth that's coming through," Watson said in an exclusive interview with WION. The former World Cup winner pointed out that Australia still boasts one of the strongest groups of experienced cricketers in world cricket, with leaders such as Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Steve Smith and Travis Head continuing to perform at the highest level. "The current Australian squad they've got, especially the experienced cricketers, they're going to continue to do very well in big tournaments," Watson said. However, he questioned whether the next wave of Australian talent is being developed as effectively as previous generations. "The younger players coming through in their early 20s and even late teens, the system's not as potent as what it was when I was coming through and the generations before," he said. According to Watson, one of the major challenges is Australia's increasingly decentralised coaching structure. He believes talented young cricketers are not always receiving guidance from the country's best coaches during their formative years."Our coaching to states doesn't necessarily mean the best coaches are helping our young cricketers coming through, boys and girls," Watson explained. Indian women's cricket is entering one of the most exciting phases in its history and few players are witnessing that growth as closely as Sayali Satghare. The SoBo Mumbai Falcons, led by the 25-year-old also won the inaugural edition of the T20 Mumbai League. Sayali, India international player and Women's Premier League champion with Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been one of the standout performers of the tournament. Yet, despite her strong start to the season, Satghare's focus remains firmly on the bigger picture, the growth of women's cricket in India and the opportunities now available to the next generation. The journey started long before the bright lights of international cricket. Growing up in Mumbai, cricket was a part of everyday life. "Actually, I was eight years old when my brother and I used to play cricket in our building. After that, my cousin brother joined an academy. I used to go and watch their practice during the summer camp and that's where it all started," Satghare recalled in an exclusive conversation with WION. That childhood passion eventually turned into a professional career, but not without setbacks. Looking back on nearly two decades in the game, Satghare says persistence was the key. "I think everyone has ups and downs in their journey. It wasn't any different for me. When things don't work out the way you want them to, you just keep working as hard as you can. Wherever you get a chance and whatever matches you play, just perform well. Then the rest will happen," she said. Her breakthrough came through Mumbai cricket. Having made her debut during the 2015-16 season, Satghare quickly progressed through the age-group ranks before becoming a regular feature in senior cricket. The dream of representing India became reality during the Women's Premier League when she received the news of her Test call-up. "We were playing the WPL then. I was with the team and the first thing Smriti came to me and said was, 'You have been selected in the Test squad.' Obviously, it felt really good. RCB's team culture is very good. It's like a family. All the foreign players and senior Indian players are very helpful. "All these leagues are very important. We saw how much difference WPL made for Indian cricket. The more leagues start in domestic cricket, the more exposure young players will get and they will get opportunities to perform on bigger stages," she said. She pointed out that not every talented player gets the chance to represent her state, making these tournaments even more important. "There will be a lot of girls who can't play for the state team but their talent is very good. Through these leagues, we can see and identify a lot of players," she explained. Among the current crop of youngsters, Satghare is particularly impressed by their confidence. "I think there is a lot of talent in Mumbai. The biggest difference is confidence. At such a young age, these players are confident on big stages. They know their strengths and skills. With ICC events, World Cups and major international tournaments lined up over the next few years, Satghare believes the national team is entering a golden phase. And if Satghare is right, the next chapter of Indian women's cricket could be its most successful yet.

George Russell produced a stunning qualifying performance to secure pole position for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, edging out Lewis Hamilton in a dramatic session that also saw Charles Leclerc crash out. After enduring a frustrating run of races, Russell bounced back in style by putting his Mercedes on pole with a lap just 0.064 seconds quicker than Hamilton's Ferrari. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli completed the top three in the second Mercedes, while McLaren's Lando Norris and Red Bull's Max Verstappen rounded out the top five. Russell's pole position marks a significant turnaround after failing to score points in the previous two Grands Prix, including a difficult weekend in Monaco that was ruined by a penalty. Reflecting on his performance, Russell said: "The last few races haven't been on our side but I came into the race with a clean slate and job done. "It's going to be an interesting race tomorrow, Lewis did an amazing job to get up there, we thought the fight was with ourselves and McLaren and Lewis was very fast in that session." Hamilton came agonisingly close to taking pole himself as Ferrari's latest upgrades showed encouraging signs. The seven-time world champion secured his first front-row start for a Grand Prix since the 2024 British Grand Prix. After struggling throughout practice and missing the opening session to allow development driver Dino Beganovic track time, Hamilton admitted he was surprised by his turnaround. "I was easily 0.4-0.5secs off in final practice," he said. "I was thinking: 'Where am I going to get that pace?' I left the track between P3 and Q1, went back to my motorhome, and then Q1 I was first. "These guys did a great lap, congrats for George but we're in a good position to fight for tomorrow so we have a race." Also Read: Germany vs Curacao: Meet the two zoo animals predicting the match result Championship leader Antonelli qualified third despite admitting he was still searching for confidence in the car. “It has been a little bit of a difficult weekend for me, didn't really have the feeling in the car.” Further back, Norris secured fourth place ahead of Verstappen, while Isack Hadjar impressed once again by qualifying sixth. One of the biggest talking points of the session was Leclerc's crash in the final qualifying segment. The Ferrari driver brought out a red flag after hitting the wall, ending his hopes of challenging near the front of the grid. The incident marked the second consecutive Grand Prix weekend in which Leclerc has crashed during qualifying, following a similar disappointment in Monaco. Unlike his home-race accident, which he blamed on braking issues, Leclerc accepted full responsibility for the Barcelona incident. "The car was great, the car was amazing and I didn't deliver. And I think it's a lot worse than that - I put it into the wall," he said. "No excuses. I just feel ashamed. George Russell secured Spanish Grand Prix pole ahead of Lewis Hamilton as Charles Leclerc crashed in qualifying and admitted he felt ashamed

"These guys did a great lap, congrats for George but we're in a good position to fight for tomorrow so we have a race." One of the biggest talking points of the session was Leclerc's crash in the final qualifying segment. It's part of our job to come out after a session and speak in front of the camera but I just feel ashamed. "The only positive I can take is the feeling that I have in the car back, and for tomorrow I feel optimistic we can have a good race. But I need to show that. “I just need to do the perfect race. More than a decade after Paul the Octopus became one of football's most famous predictors, a German zoo has unveiled two new animal forecasters ahead of Germany's upcoming match against Curacao. His remarkable success turned him into a global sensation and one of the most memorable stories of the tournament. Now, Cologne Zoo is hoping to recreate some of that magic with two of its most popular residents: Tarak the elephant and Walter the orangutan. Tarak, an Asian elephant known for his love of footballs, was given two balls decorated with the flags of Germany and Curaçao. Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that the 34-year-old will not feature against Morocco but remains hopeful of having the forward available later in the tournament. “He’s working hard to get fit as quickly as possible,” Ancelotti said. The White House is preparing to host one of the most unusual events in its history as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) stages a fight card on the South Lawn in a first-of-its-kind sporting spectacle. The event, scheduled for Sunday to coincide with President Donald Trump's 80th birthday, will transform one of America's most iconic political landmarks into an outdoor combat sports arena complete with an octagon, thousands of seats and a towering steel structure known as ‘The Claw’. While the White House has long featured recreational facilities, including tennis courts, bowling alleys and a basketball court, it has never hosted a major professional sporting event. The idea reportedly originated with Trump himself, according to UFC president Dana White, highlighting the close relationship between the president and the mixed martial arts promotion. The event also reflects UFC's growing popularity among younger audiences and Trump's political base. Critics, however, have questioned the appropriateness of staging a combat sports event at the White House, while supporters see it as a celebration of American culture and entertainment. The buildup has not been without challenges. Organizers have faced concerns over severe weather, with forecasts suggesting thunderstorms could impact the outdoor event. UFC officials have reportedly stationed meteorologists on-site to monitor changing conditions throughout the weekend. Legal opposition also emerged in the days leading up to the event. A lawsuit filed by the watchdog group Public Integrity Project attempted to block the event, arguing that federal rules related to America's 250th anniversary celebrations were being improperly used to justify the UFC card. The legal challenge was ultimately rejected by a judge. Questions have also been raised regarding Trump's financial ties to UFC parent company TKO Group Holdings after disclosures revealed the president purchased company stock earlier this year. Also Read: The own goal that ended in murder: The tragic story of Andres Escobar and 1994 FIFA World Cup Despite the controversy, the administration has continued promoting the event. Officials have highlighted UFC's anti-drug policies and cultural influence, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently announced a partnership between the State Department and the UFC. Rubio described the organization as the "United Nations of fighting", arguing that UFC events bring together people from diverse backgrounds through a shared passion for the sport. At a White House media event, Sara Carter praised heavyweight fighter Derrick Lewis for his anti-drug testing record and public influence. Lewis thanked her, before telling reporters that he didn’t have anything against drugs, generally, but marijuana every now and then helps him out. If anyone wanted to give him a medal for it, he said, he’d take it. The fight card itself features several high-profile bouts. Undefeated lightweight champion Ilia Topuria will face interim champion Justin Gaethje in the main event, while Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane are scheduled to compete for an interim heavyweight title. Approximately 4,300 spectators are expected to attend, including around 1,200 active-duty military personnel. According to reports, military attendees were required to meet specific fitness standards and physical requirements in order to receive tickets. The guest list will also include political donors, lawmakers, UFC executives and members of the administration. Not everyone secured an invitation. UFC champion Sean Strickland claimed he was not cleared to attend the event and suggested it was linked to previous comments he had made on political issues. UFC president Dana White denied those claims. As anticipation builds, attention remains focused on whether weather conditions will cooperate. If the event proceeds as planned, it will mark an unprecedented moment in White House history and further blur the lines between politics, sports and entertainment.

Donald Trump's White House hosts a historic UFC fight night featuring Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje amid legal challenges, controversy and weather concerns

5 Best Moments from Day 1 and 2 at FIFA World Cup 2026

The United States kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in style with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay, but the match will also be remembered for a historic VAR intervention that left players, fans, and commentators baffled. With the USMNT cruising to a comfortable lead in their Group D opener at SoFi Stadium, an unusual sequence of events unfolded that resulted in a World Cup first under FIFA's newly introduced laws. Veteran defender Tim Ream appeared to foul Miguel Almiron and was immediately shown a yellow card by Dutch referee Danny Makkelie. However, after Paraguay had already taken the resulting free-kick, the match was suddenly halted following communication from the video assistant referee. Makkelie was sent to the pitchside monitor and, after reviewing the incident, overturned his original decision. Rather than cautioning Ream, the referee rescinded the yellow card and instead booked Almiron for simulation after determining that the Paraguay forward had dived. The incident marked the first-ever World Cup VAR intervention for mistaken identity, made possible by a new FIFA regulation introduced ahead of the tournament. Under the updated rule, if a player is cautioned or sent off for an incident that was actually committed by an opposing player, officials are now permitted to review and correct the decision. While yellow cards themselves are generally not reviewable, the mistaken identity provision allowed the referee to reverse the booking. Also Read: USMNT star Christian Pulisic breaks Cristiano Ronaldo record as USA crush Paraguay The confusion was heightened because play had already restarted before the review took place. Traditionally, once the game resumes, previous decisions cannot be revisited, making the intervention even more unusual. Former Everton and Wales defender Ashley Williams, speaking to BBC Sport, added: "They let them take the free-kick, which was bizarre but clearly the right decision. "It's the first time we have seen it but fair play." Former England midfielder Danny Murphy, who was co-commentating for BBC Sport, added: “Any adaptation of the rules which means diving gets more punishment is good.” While the VAR drama dominated discussion, the United States delivered an outstanding performance on the pitch. An own goal from Damian Bobadilla helped the hosts establish control before Folarin Balogun scored twice to give Mauricio Pochettino's side a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime. Balogun's brace made him only the second American player to score more than once in a World Cup match. Paraguay reduced the deficit through Mauricio in the second half, but Giovanni Reyna produced a spectacular finish with the final kick of the game, curling a stunning effort into the net from 20 yards out to seal a memorable 4-1 victory. The result gives the United States a perfect start to their World Cup journey, but the unprecedented VAR intervention ensured the match made history for more reasons than one.
