Cristiano Ronaldo added another remarkable achievement to his legendary career by becoming Portugal’s highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history during a dominant 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan. The 41-year-old forward scored twice in Portugal’s Group K encounter, taking his World Cup goal tally to 10 and surpassing the long-standing record of nine goals held by Portuguese icon Eusebio since the 1966 FIFA World Cup. Portugal entered the match under scrutiny following a disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening fixture. Ronaldo had also been criticised for missing several opportunities in that match. However, both the veteran striker and Roberto Martínez’s side responded emphatically against Uzbekistan. Ronaldo opened the scoring in the sixth minute after meeting a low cross from Cancelo. The strike was historic, making him the first footballer in history to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments. The Portugal captain found the net again just before half-time. Bruno Fernandes delivered a perfectly timed pass through the Uzbekistan defence, allowing Ronaldo to finish calmly and extend Portugal’s lead to 3-0. The goal not only secured his brace but also saw him move ahead of Eusebio as Portugal’s leading World Cup goalscorer. In addition to becoming the first player to score in six separate World Cups, Ronaldo also became the second-oldest goalscorer in tournament history at 41 years and 138 days, trailing only Cameroon legend Roger Milla. The two goals further boosted Ronaldo’s incredible career tally to 975 goals for club and country. Portugal’s convincing victory lifted them to four points from two matches and significantly improved their chances of progressing to the knockout rounds ahead of their final group-stage clash against Colombia. While the result strengthened Portugal’s campaign, the evening will be remembered most for Ronaldo ending a 60-year record and adding yet another milestone to one of football’s most decorated careers. Also Read: Why are Cristiano Ronaldo’s new gold football boots trending ahead of Portugal vs Colombia match?

Who was Eusebio?
Eusebio da Silva Ferreira remains one of the greatest footballers in Portuguese history and was long regarded as the nation’s most iconic sporting figure before Ronaldo’s rise. Known as "The Black Panther" because of his speed, strength and deadly finishing ability, Eusebio became Portugal’s first global football superstar. Born on January 25, 1942, in Lourenço Marques, now Maputo in Mozambique, which was then a Portuguese colony, Eusebio rose to prominence with Benfica and established himself as one of the finest strikers of his era. His most memorable achievement came at the 1966 FIFA World Cup in England, where he scored nine goals in six matches. His performances earned him the Golden Boot and helped Portugal secure a historic third-place finish, one of the country's greatest achievements on the international stage. One of the tournament’s most unforgettable moments came in the quarter-final against North Korea. Portugal fell behind 3-0 before Eusebio inspired a dramatic turnaround by scoring four goals in a remarkable 5-3 victory. At club level, Eusebio enjoyed extraordinary success with Benfica, winning 11 Portuguese league titles and helping the club capture the European Cup. He scored more than 600 official goals throughout his career and was awarded the Ballon d’Or in 1965 as Europe’s best footballer. Eusebio passed away in January 2014 at the age of 71, but his legacy remains deeply woven into football history. He continues to be celebrated as one of the sport’s greatest-ever players and a symbol of Portugal’s emergence as a football powerhouse.

Cristiano Ronaldo surpassed Eusebio to become Portugal’s all-time leading FIFA World Cup goalscorer after scoring twice in a 5-0 win over Uzbekistan. The Portuguese star also became the first player to score in six different World Cups and extended his career tally to 975 goals

Ronaldo once again demonstrated that age is no barrier to excellence. Appearing in his sixth FIFA World Cup, the veteran forward marked the occasion by rewriting the record books. His two-goal performance helped Portugal secure a dominant win over Uzbekistan. Nuno Mendes and Rafael Leao also found the net, while an own goal involving Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov compounded the misery for Fabio Cannavaro’s side. The convincing result handed Roberto Martinez’s team their first victory of the tournament after opening with a draw against DR Congo.

The 2026 World Cup has entered its decisive final round of group-stage matches, with both games in each of the tournament’s 12 groups now kicking off simultaneously. The reason FIFA introduced simultaneous kick-offs for final group matches dates back to the 1982 World Cup and the infamous “Disgrace of Gijon” involving West Germany and Austria. In that controversial encounter, Algeria had already completed their group campaign and were in position to qualify.
What is Disgrace of Gijon?
West Germany and Austria entered their match fully aware that a narrow German victory would allow both teams to progress while eliminating Algeria on goal difference. West Germany scored in the 10th minute, and with the result sufficient for both sides, the match effectively lost its competitive edge. The two teams appeared content with the score line and largely stopped pushing for additional goals, sparking outrage among Algerian supporters and neutrals alike. In response, FIFA changed the World Cup format ahead of the 1986 tournament, ensuring that final group-stage matches would be played simultaneously. The move was designed to reduce the possibility of teams agreeing, either explicitly or implicitly, on a result that would benefit both sides. Also Read: What the duck!
Will history repeat itself for Algeria?
Ironically, the format of the 2026 World Cup may have created a different kind of scenario. The introduction of head-to-head records as the primary tiebreaker, replacing goal difference, gives some teams a clearer picture of what is required to reach the knockout stages. That situation now appears to favor Algeria and Austria in Group J. With Argentina already guaranteed top spot and four points expected to be enough for most third-placed teams to advance, both Algeria and Austria know that a draw in Kansas City would likely send them through to the next round. A similar scenario exists in Group D, where Australia and Paraguay could also benefit from sharing the points. However, there is an additional twist. Finishing second in Group J would likely set up a difficult last-32 clash against Spain, one of the tournament favourites. The team ending third could instead face Belgium or Egypt, a potentially more favorable route through the knockout stages. As a result, the final group-stage showdown between Algeria and Austria carries an unusual dynamic, raising questions about whether FIFA’s latest format adjustments have unintentionally created new strategic opportunities decades after the “Disgrace of Gijon.”

Football, especially at the FIFA World Cup, is usually dominated by younger players. Most outfield footballers reach their best form in their late 20s or early 30s and by their mid-30s many are no longer at their peak. As a result, players older than 35 are rarely seen making a major impact on the biggest stage of the sport. However, a few exceptional players have proven that age is not always a barrier. Two notable examples are Cameroon’s Roger Milla and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who both achieved remarkable World Cup milestones later in their careers. Roger Milla remains the oldest player ever to score in a men’s FIFA World Cup match. Merlin the duck’s dream of watching his beloved Mexico national team in action was dashed after he was denied entry to Wednesday’s match against Czechia. Fans launched a campaign to help Merlin attend the match alongside his human family, but FIFA regulations ultimately prevented him from taking a seat in the stands. Although Merlin was granted access to the Estadio Azteca grounds to participate in a television segment for Televisa, one of Latin America’s largest broadcasters, he was not allowed inside the stadium during the game. A FIFA spokesperson confirmed that Merlin was allowed within the stadium perimeter but not inside the venue itself and declined to provide further details. “These last few days have been crazy, we’ll never stop being grateful for what we’ve experienced,” Carla Gómez told the Associated Press. “Everyone is truly amazed by Merlin.” Despite his growing celebrity status, Merlin has yet to publicly address FIFA’s policy on ducks attending football matches. During the World Cup, Merlin has become a social media phenomenon and international celebrity. The FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage is just two days away from getting over and there are still teams to fill up the spots for the next round when the knockout begins. For the first time 48 teams are participating in the tournament which are divided into 12 groups of four teams each. The next round will have 32 teams vying for a place in quarterfinals. FIFA, to select the 32 teams for the next round, has decided to pick up top two teams from each group after the group-stage and selecting eight third-placed teams among all the 12 groups.
How the eight best third-placed teams will be selected?
FIFA has introduced five-step procedure to select the the eight third-placed teams which will join the rest of 24 teams for the knockout stage which beging in Round of 32. While the selection for top 24 teams is directly based on finishing in top two of their respective groups, here's below the procedure to select rest of the eight teams:
Highest number of points
The first way any team among the 12 third-placed teams can qualify for the Round of 32 is based on points. Th top eight teams with highest number of points after group stage and selecting top 24 teams, will get a berth in the knockout round.

Goal difference
If there two or more teams with same points and there's a tie to select last eight of R32 teams, the goal difference will be checked and the team with better goal difference will advance. The goal difference is calculated by number of goals done a team in group stage matches and then the number of goals conceded are substracted to get the number. Also Read - FIFA 2026 Day 14 Result | Brazil, Morocco in R32 from Group C and more results
Goals scored
If there is a tie still persisting after checking for points and goal difference, the goals scored will be looked at to determine the teams among third-placed sides to allot a R32 berth. It is highly unlikely that the situation will stretch to this point but just in case it does, FIFA has it covered.
Highest team conduct
In a case when two or more teams have same points, same goal difference, and same goals scored, FIFA then take their conduct during the group stage into the account. The conduct means total yellow and red cards for the players and officials will be counted and the teams with lesser number of those cards will prevail into the R32.
Highest FIFA ranking
If none of the above things work to determine eight teams among the 12 third-placed teams, the FIFA will go to the rankings of the teams and the sides with best rankings will proceed to the next round along with top 24 teams. The steps after first one of looking at the points will be considered only after the previous ones have failed to determine the teams.
Where to watch and live stream FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 matches?
All the Round of 32 knockout matches in FIFA World Cup 2026 will be aired LIVE across WION's sister company Zee5 app and website. Germany have sealed top spot in Group E and are bound for the last 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026, but coach Julian Nagelsmann is not entirely pleased with the situation. The four-time world champions, who thrashed debutants Curacao 7-1 before coming from behind to beat Ivory Coast 2-1, will only know their round-of-32 opponents less than 48 hours before their first game in Foxborough on June 29. Under the expanded 48-team format - the first of its kind in World Cup history - the eight group winners from the opening round must wait until late Saturday (Jun 27) to discover which of the eight best third-placed teams awaits them. Germany are among those eight group winners facing that uncertainty, and their final group game against Ecuador on Thursday (Jun 25) adds little clarity to their knockout preparation.
Germany coach isn't happy about topping Group
Nagelsmann made no secret of his frustration at a pre-match press conference in New Jersey, though he acknowledged the structural complexity behind the scheduling. "I think we are being punished as the group leader," the 38-year-old told reporters.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is exploring the viability of sending a handful of promising cricketers to the US as part of a specialised power-hitting program. While the logistics are not yet complete, a final call on the list of players to travel is also underway, Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson confirmed. The multi-month initiative is designed not only to enhance players’ power-hitting in an alien environment, but also to work on the fitness regimes of brighter talents whose careers have been marred by injuries. "We're sending some players to the US. There's some power-hitting expertise over there, and we're exploring some options. We've got some players who've had some longer-term injuries, and players we want to expose to different methods of power hitting and just a different learning environment, spending four months in one place to get some new fresh ideas,” Hesson said in a chat with Cricinfo.
Re-engineering Pakistan's fitness standards
Hesson also highlighted that this program doesn’t just serve a single purpose but multiple, including changing the way players are trained. His comments have come on the back of PCB’s Director of Sports and Exercise Medicine, Dr Javed Mughal, who, earlier in a presser, said that 'fitness is non-negotiable in professional sport', and that the PCB developed a 'robust, reliable and repeatable testing and screening battery we had started to apply to all players.' "There's a bit of collaboration. It's certainly not just strength and conditioning," Hesson said. “We've got Javed Mughal, who's come in here and changing the way players are training and assessing them in a different way. So he needs time to plan it out as well.”
Young pacers among those travelling to the US
Under-19 quick Ali Raza, often regarded as the most exciting white-ball prospect in Pakistan, is among the players likely to be sent to the US, should the plan materialise. Raza, 18, has shown promise, including his match-winning performance against India in the final of the 50-over U19 Asia Cup last year, where he picked up four wickets for 42 runs. A photograph of England midfielder Jude Bellingham covering his mouth while speaking to Ghana forward Jordan Ayew during Tuesday's 0-0 draw in Boston sparked debate among football fans following the introduction of a new FIFA rule for the 2026 World Cup. The law allows players to be sent off if they cover their mouth while speaking to an opponent during a confrontational exchange. The rule was introduced after Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni received a six-match UEFA ban for homophobic conduct towards Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr during a Champions League match in February.
Miguel Almiron suspended for one-game for covering his mouth so why not Bellingham?
Paraguay midfielder Miguel Almiron became the first player dismissed under the new regulation during a match against Turkey at the weekend. Following a VAR review, the referee issued a red card, raising questions about why Bellingham was not punished in a similar manner. The key difference lies in the context of the interaction. Covering the mouth itself is not prohibited. FIFA's concern is when it occurs during a heated confrontation between opponents. Before the tournament, FIFA's head of referees, Pierluigi Collina, clarified the rule. "Players can continue to cover their mouth with an arm and the shirt because they may chat with friends," Collina said. "It's normal to a chat before, during or after the match."So if the conversation is a friendly conversation, they can continue to do it without any problem. "When the conversation is confrontational, covering the mouth means that you are doing something wrong, potentially, and the sanction is the red card." During the England-Ghana match, there appeared to be no hostility between Bellingham and Ayew. The pair were simply engaged in conversation, meaning there was no reason for VAR to intervene. Almiron's situation was different because it occurred during a tense moment in Paraguay's match against Turkey. The incident followed a challenge involving Paraguay's Isidro Pitta and Turkey's Ismail Yuksek, which triggered a confrontation between players from both teams. Amid the commotion, Almiron covered his mouth while speaking to Turkey defender Mert Muldur. Although neither player was directly involved in the altercation, officials viewed the exchange as taking place within a confrontational context. Also Read: 'A very beautiful process': Sjoerd Marijne all praise for senior players for mentoring India's young hockey stars

FIFA president Gianni Infantino reinforced the governing body's position after Almiron's dismissal. "This thing about covering the mouth is for us a very, very important rule," Infantino told SNTV on Tuesday following Almiron's dismissal. "It's about respect. It's about the example that we should give. "If you have nothing to hide, you don't cover your mouth when you speak to somebody."The rules have been made very clear to everyone." The new regulation has generated debate over how consistently it can be applied. Critics argue that players could potentially exploit the rule by drawing officials' attention to opponents during emotional moments. In Almiron's case, he did not appear overtly aggressive, yet Muldur immediately alerted an assistant referee to the gesture. Almiron received a one-match suspension and will miss Paraguay's final group-stage game against Australia. FIFA confirmed that a longer ban could have been imposed if evidence of abusive language had emerged. The rule remains optional for competitions to adopt and is currently being used only at the World Cup. Concerns over consistency and the possibility of players manipulating the rule may prevent it from being widely introduced in domestic leagues.

15-year-old batting sensation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, must use a separate changing room from the main one used by senior Indian players on the upcoming UK tour, which includes two T20Is against Ireland and five against England. Sunday (Jun 28) will host the second game, after which India will fly to England for the five T20Is, beginning July 1 at Chester-Le-Street. "A safeguarding concern occurring during the event may be managed by the ICC. In addition to this, the ECB Safe Hands policy applies at all times." Considering his parents are also accompanying him on this UK tour and will be staying at the same hotel as he does, which is outside of usual family-related travel guidelines, all parties involved have agreed to this due to his age. "The Cricket Regulator is in contact with the Team Liaison Officer (TLO) for the Indian team to discuss requirements and expectations for the player while he is in the UK. Each County Safeguarding Officer for the relevant cricket venue is also working closely with the Team Liaison Officer to ensure venue protocols and arrangements are understood and adhered to. This is conducted via safeguarding risk assessments. "It is our understanding that the player's parents will be travelling with him at all times. They are staying in the same hotel, which is outside of usual protocol, but agreed on this occasion due to his age. This additional measure provides us with further confidence that he has family members that can provide the additional level of support and care,” the statement read. Meanwhile, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia earlier revealed that Sooryavanshi’s parents will accompany him on his first-ever international tour as an Indian cricketer, with the Indian board bearing all expenses for his family members.

Fresh off India's Women's FIH Nations Cup title-winning campaign against New Zealand, head coach Sjoerd Marijne credited mental conditioning, individual guidance and a strong culture of mentorship within the squad as key pillars behind the team's success. Speaking after the victory, Marijne stressed the growing importance of the mental aspect of the game and revealed how the coaching staff has focused on understanding players beyond their on-field abilities. “Yeah, the mental side is a very important part for me. We did small things on this and that is working with profiling. That I know the players better about what kind of person are they.
