The 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 straight sets win on Tuesday (May 27), however, did not come without the drama. The Serbian had a moment in the match when he got into the argument with the chair umpire. While Draper won the match comfortably by 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 margin, it was in the first set that an interesting moment came which sent the crowd into frenzy at the Roland Garros.

Future of Maradona death trial in doubt as scandal-hit judge steps down

A key judge in the trial of late Argentine football superstar Diego Maradona's medical team stepped down on Tuesday, amid a scandal that has thrown the future of the high-profile case into doubt. Julieta Makintach, dubbed the "judge of god," recused herself after it emerged she had been shooting a racy miniseries about the months-old trial, potentially breaking a string of ethics rules. Maradona died in November 2020, at age 60, while recovering from brain surgery. His seven-person medical team is on trial over the conditions of his home convalescence, described by prosecutors as grossly negligent. After a series of police raids and a one-week suspension of the case, 47-year-old Makintach was on Tuesday accused of violating her impartiality, of influence peddling and even bribery over her role in the documentary miniseries "Divine Justice." A trailer for the feature was played in court showing Makintach stalking the halls of justice in high heels as grim details of the footballing legend's demise were relayed. According to a script, the miniseries would follow Makintach as she "reconstructs the death of Maradona and certain painful milestones of his life related to abandonment." Footage appeared to contain unauthorised recordings allegedly made inside the courtroom, a violation of court rules. Tuesday's hearing was marked by insults, recriminations, shouting and tears. In a bitter exchange, prosecutor Patricio Ferrari accused Makintach of behaving "like an actress and not a judge." As the trailer was played, defense lawyer Rodolfo Baque jumped out of his chair to shout "trash!" at the judge. Daughter Gianinna Maradona tried to calm him, before she and Maradona's former partner, Veronica Ojeda, both began sobbing uncontrollably. Makintach sat with her head bowed, biting her lip and eventually said she had "no choice" but to recuse herself as one of the case's three justices. ‘Dark, ugly and lonely’ Her removal is an embarrassment for Argentina's judicial system and could yet derail a trial being watched by football diehards around the globe. Maradona -- considered one of the world's greatest ever players -- died of heart failure and acute pulmonary edema. Those responsible for his medical care face prison terms between eight and 25 years if convicted of homicide with possible intent. The charges relate to their decision to allow him to recover from major surgery at home, and the conditions of his care. Gianinna Maradona has claimed her father was kept in "a dark, ugly and lonely" place and that his carers were more interested in money than his welfare. The court will decide on Thursday whether the trial will go ahead or be scrapped and then restarted. Some of the plaintiffs have called for a new trial, saying they felt proceedings have been tainted by scandal. "Everyone now feels that this is compromised," said Mario Baudry, the lawyer for Maradona's ex-partner Ojeda. "It's healthiest to start over from scratch," he added. Russia's ice hockey record in the past two Winter Olympics At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Russia claimed the gold medal in ice hockey after defeating Germany 4-3 in a thrilling final. Four years down in Beijing , they secured silver, narrowly losing 2-1 to Finland. Previously, in 1998 Nagano Winter games, Russia had clinched the gold medal followed with a third podium rank in the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. These performances have established Russia as one of the leaders in the sport. However, their absence from the 2026 Games now marks a significant shift in the competition. The decision by the IOC follows sanctions imposed on the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) after Russia-Ukraine conflict which started in 2022. Despite recent reports suggesting that Russian hockey officials had discussed Olympic participation with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the IOC clarified that its stance remains unchanged. It further explained that a group of individual neutral athletes cannot be considered a national team. The IIHF has confirmed it will stick to the IOC's guidelines. While a small number of Russian and Belarusian athletes competed at the Paris 2024 Olympics as neutrals, they had undergone strict screening and they were neither allowed to have their national flags nor the Russian national anthem was allowed to play. The same approach is expected for the Winter Games. Additionally, the IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee in October 2023 after the committee recognized Olympic bodies in four Ukrainian regions Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia currently under Russian control. This move was seen as a breach of the Olympic Charter, which respects the territorial integrity of national Olympic committees. As of now, only a handful of Russian athletes in individual sports like figure skating are being considered for neutral participation in 2026.

'When we were in the dumps...,' Skipper Iyer speaks on PBK finishing top of IPL 2025 points table

Former India player Robin Uthappa believes that Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shreyas Iyer was 'underappreciated' at his previous team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The statement comes a day after Punjab finished as the table toppers of IPL 2025 and secured a place in Qualifier 1."Shreyas has always been an exceptional captain. You always sensed that he felt underappreciated at KKR despite adding value there," Uthappa said while talking to JioHotstar. "He moved to a franchise where not much had been achieved historically, and then went on to win it for them. Australia have found themselves in a bit of a selection headache ahead of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa at Lord’s Stadium. The return of all-rounder Cameron Green back in form with the bat has sparked serious discussions about reshuffling the batting line-up for the Baggy Greens. Green has been in superb touch during his county stint with Gloucestershire, scoring three centuries in eight innings while batting at No. 5. Also, in March 2024, he played a match-winning knock of an unbeaten 174 against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve. While he hasn’t played a Test match since the same New Zealand series, his red-ball form, especially in the county cricket has made him hard to look away from. Head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed Green could return as a specialist batter, but that would force some changes in the top and middle order. “If you require the all-rounder in the conditions, that would then lend itself to a decision around the top order, And that’s not to dismiss the fact that Beau Webster can be a bat only as well.” McDonald was quoted saying to SEN Radio. It was supposed to be a day of pure celebration. The streets of Liverpool were bathed in red, banners waving, horns blaring, and voices lifted in unison. Thousands thronged the city centre for the victory parade, a chance to finally revel in the glory that the club had delivered. The laughter gave way to gasps, and then to sirens. For many, it was a jolt back in time. Thirty-five years earlier, in 1989, Liverpool had endured one of the darkest days in football history. Ninety-seven fans lost their lives at Hillsborough Stadium, crushed against barriers in an overcrowded terrace, while a semi-final match was underway. What followed was decades of grief, injustice, and a relentless fight for accountability. Emergency services responded swiftly, and within minutes, the chaos was contained. Still, for many, the sense of vulnerability lingered. The crowd, which had just been singing in full voice, now murmured anxiously, glancing around, clutching children close. In the days following the parade crash, conversations in pubs and on street corners returned again and again to Hillsborough. For decades, football was not just a game, but a symbol of identity, of defiance against injustice. Hillsborough was a moment when that identity was nearly crushed—literally and figuratively. Football unites after car ploughs into Liverpool victory parade

The football world united on Tuesday after 27 people were hospitalised when a car ploughed into a packed crowd celebrating Liverpool winning the Premier League. Police ruled out terrorism following the incident in the city on Monday as thousands turned out in torrential rain to see Liverpool's victory parade. Four children were among those hurt, one seriously, after a dark-coloured vehicle swerved through the crowd minutes after the players' open-top bus passed by. Police arrested a 53-year-old white British man. "Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident," Liverpool posted on X, where several Premier League clubs offered their support. Great rivals Manchester United wrote: "Our thoughts are with LFC and the city of Liverpool after today's awful incident." On the blue side of Merseyside, Everton said: "Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this serious incident in our city." Deposed Premier League champions Manchester City wrote: "The thoughts of everyone at Manchester City are with those injured or affected by the incident at Liverpool's title-winning parade earlier today." Liverpool's former captain Steven Gerrard posted an image on Instagram of the city with a red heart. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher wrote on X: "Devastating end to the day... just pray everyone is ok." FIFA president Gianni Infantino offered "thoughts and prayers to all those affected". "Football stands together with Liverpool FC and all fans of the club following the horrific incident that has taken place during the trophy parade in the city," he said in a statement. Images shared on social media showed the car being brought to a halt and swarmed by angry fans, who broke the back windows as police sought to hold them back. Four people, including a child, were trapped under the car. The Premier League said on X that it was "shocked by the appalling events". "Our heartfelt thoughts go out to all those injured and affected," it said. "We have been in contact with Liverpool FC and have offered our full support following this serious incident."
