PBKS vs RCB Qualifier 1: Kohli's bumper season with bat ignites IPL 2016 memories for Bengaluru

The Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) Playoffs are all set to take centre stage starting Thursday (May 29) as Punjab Kings play Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the New Chandigarh Stadium in Mullanpur. With four teams remaining, the odds are stacked for one of them to win as former champions Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans stand in RCB and PBKS’ way. However, former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson has backed RCB to win the tournament, in what will be their maiden IPL title.<h2>Watson backs RCB to win</h2>"The winner of IPL 2025, and I’ve been thinking long and hard about it, is RCB. And the Man of the Match for me is Virat Kohli, the great man. And here's the reason why. I just get a feeling that this is the time for RCB. They have had a few blips in the back end of the tournament, but with Josh Hazlewood coming back for the Playoffs, I get a feeling this is the year," Watson said in a video shared on his X handle.&nbsp;RCB will enter Qualifier 1 as the second-best team in the IPL 2025 standings having finished with 19 points in 14 matches. They narrowly missed out on the top spot on Net Run Rate (NRR) as PBKS also had the same number of points. Interestingly, both PBKS and RCB are buying for their maiden title.&nbsp;RCB have thrice finished as the runners-up of the IPL when they lost the final in 2009, 2011 and 2016. The team from South India also entered the Playoffs in 2024 but lost in the Eliminator contest to Rajasthan Royals.&nbsp; While RCB remain Watson’s favourite to win the title, he has also backed veteran Virat Kohli to win the Player of the Tournament. He has been in great form and is currently fifth in the Orange Cap standings at the time of writing.

A shocking scuffle broke out during a four-day Emerging Teams match between <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/bangladesh-cricket">Bangladesh </a>and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/south-africa-cricket">South Africa</a> in Dhaka. Players from both teams were seen grappling each other after a heated moment on the field.&nbsp; The trouble started when 22-year-old Bangladesh batter Ripon Mondol hit a big six straight down the ground to South African fast bowler Tshepo Ntuli. After the shot, the two players shot daggers at each other. As Ripon walked towards his partner, Ntuli suddenly rushed towards him.&nbsp; What followed was a disturbing scene. Ntuli tried to grab Ripon’s helmet and pulled it multiple times. Umpire Kamruzzaman stepped in and tried to control the situation, but the fight kept getting worse. Other South African players also rushed in, and the argument turned into a full brawl in the middle of the pitch.

Ravindra Jadeja has been around for a long time and the all-rounder is an integral part of the Indian Test set up for nearly a decade. TV commentators have left AB de Villiers angry and unhappy with their negative remarks on his former IPL franchise, Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) bowling against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) this season. Chelsea aim higher after Conference League triumph over Real Betis

The UEFA Conference League was not where Chelsea wanted to be, but their triumph in Wroclaw could prove to be a turning point for a club that had lost their trophy-winning habit. The Premier League team beat Real Betis 4-1 on Wednesday, recovering strongly from being outplayed in the first half by their Spanish opponents. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca's second-half substitutions lifted his team but an inspired Cole Palmer was the catalyst for victory, producing two pinpoint crosses for Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson. Jadon Sancho's fine finish made it 3-1 and Moises Caicedo added a fourth in stoppage time to give Chelsea their first silverware since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital acquired the club in May 2022 from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich. During the past three years the owners have spent more than £1 billion ($1.3 billion) on promising young talent, but until now have had little to show for it. Chelsea had been clear favourites to win Europe's third-tier club competition from the start, enabling Maresca to field youth and fringe players. They rampaged through the group phase, outclassing teams with a fraction of their resources such as Noah, Astana and Shamrock Rovers. Maresca spoke on the eve of the final in Poland about how he had stressed the importance of the Conference League to his players. He will not need to persuade them next season as they are back where they feel they belong, the Champions League, following a fourth-place finish in the Premier League. 'Winning mentality' Maresca, in his first season at Stamford Bridge, said he hoped winning the Conference League would be a launchpad for bigger and better. "Hopefully, it can be a starting point to build a winning mentality," he said. "You need to win games. You need to win competitions. "And for sure, the trophy we won tonight is going to make us better. But also, I'm very proud about the path or the journey we have done in the Premier League. "For me, it's the most difficult competition in the world. You have to be consistent in 38 games. And these players, they showed it." Maresca had a rollercoaster first season after replacing Mauricio Pochettino. His team were within touching distance of eventual Premier League champions Liverpool in mid-December before stumbling badly. But they found an extra gear towards the end of the campaign, negotiating a tricky run-in to finish in the Champions League spots. "For sure, we have improved a lot since we started," said former Leicester boss Maresca. "We also start to win games in an ugly way. "That is something with a young squad that you struggle to do that." The Italian has been keen to highlight the extreme youth of his expensively assembled squad. The average age of his starting side was the youngest in a single Premier League campaign. Under Abramovich, Chelsea became serial trophy winners, claiming five Premier League titles and winning the Champions League twice. It is too early to predict whether they will return to those heady heights but the Conference League is a start. Next on the agenda is a trip to the Club World Cup in the United States, for which Chelsea qualified by winning the 2021 Champions League. "Now we have 10 days off, 10 days where we need to recover energy, and then we're going to start the Club World Cup," said Maresca. "The target is to go game by game, try to go step by step, but at this moment we don't have any target for the Club World Cup. "Now the only target is to recover energy, because the season has been very long." Manchester United suffered fresh embarrassment and were booed off as they lost 1-0 to a Southeast Asian XI in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday in front of 72,550. Ruben Amorim's side, who finished 15th in the Premier League for their worst season since 1974, looked lethargic and devoid of ideas in the gruelling heat. Some fans at Bukit Jalil National Stadium left before the end and there were boos at the final whistle. United have struggled for goals all year and it was more evidence why they are reportedly prepared to shell out £62.5 million ($85 million) on Brazilian international attacker Matheus Cunha from Wolves. Amorim, who was clearly frustrated during the match and shook his head at times, refused to confirm the Cunha deal. The Portuguese coach was happy though to leave the Malaysian capital and head to Hong Kong with no new injuries and had no issue with fans booing his team off. "We were slow and we still don't have it in us to win every exercise in training, every game," he said. "The boos from the fans, it's something that we need." He added: "These people believe in Manchester United no matter what the context. "It's our duty to improve the team and to improve the team next season. "For me, we need to have that belief, that hunger to win every game, that is important." In their first of two post-season games in Asia, United started with several regulars including Harry Maguire, Rasmus Hojlund, Casemiro, Diogo Dalot, Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo and Andre Onana. In temperatures of 32 degrees Celsius (90 Fahrenheit) at kickoff, it was the ASEAN All Stars who looked more threatening in the first half. They shot just wide in the 16th minute and Onana was then called into action with a low save that endeared him to the pro-United crowd. Mainoo provided the first real threat for United with a 25-yard effort that was turned behind for a corner, before the young midfielder saw his shot cleared off the line in the 38th minute. Captain Bruno Fernandes came on in the second half and his half-volley lit up a drab restart. Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho, on the trip despite looking like he is headed for the exit at United, made a lively cameo off the bench. United were better in the second half but the Southeast Asian side stunned the visitors in the 71st minute when Burmese attacker Maung Maung Lwin found himself clean through on goal before firing into the top corner past Tom Heaton. Soon after Heaton came to United's rescue to prevent further embarrassment. United play the Hong Kong team on Friday. England has been renowned for its tradition for sports, whether it is the FA Cup in football or the Ashes in cricket, the nation has taken pride in its vast culture. However, one sport that has really caught the eye in recent years where the fans are seen risking their lives is the traditional rolling wheel of cheese. The event taking place annually is held at Cooper's Hill at Brockworth near Gloucester in England.

<h2>What is the Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake?</h2>The event is popularly known as the Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake and has a rich history despite its tradition being unknown. The earliest record being is the 1826 event as a bunch of athletes chase down a 200-yard (180 m) long hill for a Double Gloucester cheese. This means, the sport has a tradition beyond the FA Cup which started in 1871 and the Ashes in 1882. When compared to the Wimbledon, it originated more than half a century before, highlighting the tradition.&nbsp;<h2>Format of Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake</h2>From the top of the hill, a 7–9-pound (3–4-kilogram) round of Double Gloucester cheese is sent rolling down the mountain, which is 200 yards (180 m) long, and with a slope of around 50 percent (26.6 degrees).&nbsp;&nbsp;Competitors then start racing down the hill after the cheese is released. The first person over the finish line at the bottom of the hill wins the cheese. The competitors aim to catch the cheese; however, it has around a one-second head start and can reach high speeds, enough to knock over and injure a spectator.&nbsp;Multiple races are held during the day, with separate events for men and women. While it may seem funny, competitors are seen sustaining heavy injuries and sometimes being rescued from near-death situations. The hill is unsteady in nature with a rough surface, making it harder for the competitors to win.
