Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim said the support of co-owner Jim Ratcliffe will mean little if he fails to turn around the club's fortunes. In an interview with the Times newspaper's The Business podcast, last week, British billionaire Ratcliffe said Amorim has to "demonstrate he is a great coach over three years". Amorim is approaching a year in the Old Trafford hotseat and is yet to win back-to-back Premier League games. Doing so away to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday would be a major step in the right direction and the Portuguese knows he will be under intense pressure until results improve."You know, I know and Jim knows that football is not like that," Amorim said at his pre-match press conference on Friday, referring to Ratcliffe's timescale. Also Read - DP World India Championship: Shubhankar top Indian as Fleetwood takes lead"The most important thing is the next game."United ended the season 15th in the Premier League last term -- their lowest finish for 51 years -- and squandered a chance to qualify for the Champions League when they lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. They have fared little better this season, sitting 10th in the Premier League after losing three of their first seven league games and crashing to a shock League Cup defeat at fourth-tier Grimsby.Yet Amorim has so far retained the support of Ratcliffe, CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox."First of all, I can feel it. In the late 1970s, few figures loomed larger over world cricket than Sir Clive Lloyd. The towering West Indian captain not only marshalled his team to an era of unprecedented dominance but also etched his name in history as the first man to lift the 1975 ODI World Cup at the iconic Lord’s. His batting was imperious, his leadership commanding, and his association with Test cricket became synonymous with excellence, resilience, and the uncompromising spirit of the game’s longest format. Nearly five decades later, Lloyd remains a fierce guardian of Test cricket’s legacy — and on Thursday (October 16), he once again underscored his conviction as he threw his weight behind Test Twenty, cricket’s newly unveiled fourth format designed to reimagine the future of the sport. The former West Indies captain was responding exclusively to a question from WION during the global launch event of Test Twenty. The question touched upon his lifelong bond with Test cricket and how he views its evolution in the age of T20 leagues and franchise ecosystems. “I’m a Test cricket person — there’s no doubt about that,” Lloyd began firmly. “I feel we’ve neglected Test cricket over the years and we need to get that back into the system. It examines every part of your cricketing skills. I don’t want to see the end of Test cricket. It would be a tragedy.” Also Read: DP World India Championship: Shubhankar Sharma top Indian as Tommy Fleetwood takes lead His words, delivered with characteristic gravitas, struck a chord in a room filled with legends, administrators. Lloyd went on to raise questions that reflect the anxieties of many cricketing countries— especially smaller ones struggling to keep the longest format financially sustainable. “Do we have the ICC backing? Do we have the countries backing this? Because it will be a help to them. I know we are struggling in the West Indies monetarily — 14 islands, just 5 million people. If we don’t have the finance to look after our cricket, we’ll be in the doldrums for quite a while. So I want to see Test cricket back. That is why I want to back this system,” he said.
What is Test Twenty?
The virtual conference where Lloyd spoke also marked a pivotal moment in cricket’s ongoing evolution. Gaurav Bahirvani, Executive Chairman of the One One Six Network, officially unveiled Test Twenty, describing it as a youth-first global movement that blends cricket’s timeless artistry with modern rhythms. Unlike existing formats, Test Twenty is being envisioned as a unifying stage for young players across the world, bringing together the examination of skills of Test cricket with the pace and accessibility of T20, while introducing innovative match structures that keep the contest competitive and viewer-friendly. Standing beside Bahirvani are some of the game’s biggest names: AB de Villiers, Sir Clive Lloyd, Matthew Hayden, and Harbhajan Singh, who together form the Test Twenty advisory board. Their mandate is clear — to ensure the format evolves while staying rooted in cricket’s original spirit. Adding operational heft to this vision is Michael Fordham, former CEO of the Rajasthan Royals IPL franchise, who joins as Chief Operating Officer to build, operate, and commercialise the platform globally.
Why Lloyd’s words matter?
Lloyd’s passionate plea for safeguarding Test cricket isn’t just nostalgia from a bygone era — it’s a warning and a challenge. Over the last two decades, the global cricket calendar has been increasingly dominated by shorter formats, particularly T20 leagues. While financially lucrative, they have often left Test cricket squeezed for space, attention, and resources. For regions like the Caribbean, which once produced the most feared Test sides in history, the challenges are particularly acute. Limited financial resources, a fragmented geography, and competition from global T20 leagues have made sustaining a robust Test ecosystem increasingly difficult. Lloyd’s backing of Test Twenty suggests he sees in the format a possible bridge between tradition and modernity — a way to keep the ethos of Test cricket alive while appealing to new generations of players and fans. “It examines every part of your cricketing skills,” Lloyd said. “And if you haven’t played at the highest level, it’s very difficult to assess you as a top cricketer. That’s why this format can help — by giving young players that platform.”
A new chapter for cricket’s oldest format
Test Twenty may still be in its infancy, but with figures like Sir Clive Lloyd lending their support, the movement carries both historical weight and future ambition. For a man who captained one of the greatest Test teams ever assembled, Lloyd’s stance is not surprising. But in an era where the sport’s commercial and cultural gravity often tilts towards shorter formats, his call to “bring Test cricket back into the system” resonates like a rallying cry. Whether Test Twenty can live up to its promise remains to be seen. But if cricket is indeed entering its “fourth format” era, it seems fitting that one of the most respected custodians of its oldest form is helping lead the way.

That’s why this format can help — by giving young players that platform.” A new chapter for cricket’s oldest format Test Twenty may still be in its infancy, but with figures like Sir Clive Lloyd lending their support, the movement carries both historical weight and future ambition.

The conversation around Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma being part of 2027 ODI World Cup is growing louder with each passing day. The duo is currently in Australia for the three-ODI series which starts October 19 in Perth. Virat Kohli's participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup might be depended in his form over the next two years as per India selectors but former Australia batter Matthew Hayden thinks otherwise. The Asia Cup 2025 turned out to be a bigger event for the champions not getting the trophy rather a team winning it. India had won the title by beating arch-rivals Pakistan in the final but refused to accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi - ACC & PCB chief as well as a minister in Pakistan's federal government. India's refusal was on the back of hostilities exchanged earlier in the year which happened in the wake of Pahalgam terror attack in India's Jammu and Kashmir on April 22.
Where is the trophy now?
After India had to celebrate their title win without an actual trophy, Naqvi has the trophy locked away in ACC office in Dubai, UAE. Ideally, it should have been sent to the winner but so far that hasn't happened. If the reports are to be believed, then Naqvi has instructed the staff to not give away the trophy to BCCI in his absence and has insisted on giving the trophy himself. There is, however, no timeline on when that might happen. Also Read - Test cricket just got a global icon as a fan - McIlroy looking forward to Ashes So when can BCCI expect the trophy? Indian athlete and adventurer with a cause, Mann Sharma, has created history by completing the world's first-ever Burpees Marathon, covering an astonishing 42.195 kilometres, entirely through broad burpees, over a course of nine days here at the Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium. This extraordinary feat has been officially recognised by the World Book of Records, London, as a new world record, surpassing the previous mark of 5.1 kilometres by over eight times, a record that Mann himself had surpassed on the first day of his marathon. Representatives from the World Book of Records, London, were present to officially ratify and present the world record certificate and medal to Mann Sharma, marking a proud moment for India on the global stage, as per a press release. I am deeply grateful to the Sports Ministry, Fit India, my team, my sponsors, and every supporter who stood by me. This record belongs to all of us, it is proof that with purpose, anything is achievable."
