The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially raised the issue of the Asia Cup trophy with the International Cricket Council (ICC) as the battle for its custody takes centre stage. India, who won the Asia Cup in the final week of September, were denied the opportunity to present the trophy after the Men in Blue initially refused to receive it from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chairman and Pakistan minister Mohsin Naqvi. India's women's captain Harmanpreet Kaur shared an emotional insight into the team’s journey to victory in the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup. Ahead of the final, the team received a morale-boosting call from none other than Sachin Tendulkar, who offered them invaluable advice. Tendulkar spoke to the players the night before the big game. He encouraged them to maintain their composure and balance under pressure. “Sachin sir told us to keep our calm, especially when the match speeds up. Slow it down, and control the pace. If you rush, there’s a greater risk of making mistakes,” Harmanpreet recalled. This advice, which resonated deeply with the team, was pivotal as India went on to defeat South Africa by 52 runs in the final, clinching the World Cup at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Harmanpreet also reflected on how her personal journey had intertwined with the team’s historic achievement. “It still feels unreal. We keep saying ‘world champion’ to each other, but it’s a surreal feeling. My parents were there, and I’ve dreamed of this moment since childhood. Both had been instrumental in the team’s near-successes in the 2005 and 2017 World Cups, and their presence in the stadium, even in commentary roles, was symbolic. "After the 2022 World Cup, we were heartbroken. It felt like we had failed Mithali di and Jhulan di. But we promised ourselves that if we ever won again, they would be there to witness it. We never dreamed of this moment without their presence.” Harmanpreet's reflections stressed on how much this victory meant not just to the team, but to the entire women’s cricket community in India. It was not only a dream fulfilled but also a tribute to the generations of players who had paved the way.

India once again got the better of Pakistan, this time in the Hong Kong Sixes 2025 clash on Friday (Nov 7), but what made headlines wasn’t just the close result it was the absence of handshakes between the two teams after the match. English pacer Mark Wood is all set to make his long-awaited return to bowling after spending six months recovering from knee surgery. The England fast bowler said he feels excited to be back in rhythm and aims to be “as fresh as I can be” for the first Ashes Test at Perth’s Optus Stadium in two weeks. Wood, known for his express pace, played in the 2021–22 Ashes, where he took 17 wickets, including a career-best 6 for 37 in Hobart. However, he missed the Perth Test back then due to COVID-19 restrictions. This time, he’s eager to bowl again on one of the fastest pitches in Australia. “It was rapid,” Wood said, recalling his experience of bowling in Perth during England’s 2022 T20 World Cup campaign. “My back might not be looking forward to it, but my bowling definitely is.” Also read | WION Exclusive | Pratika Rawal finally gets her World Cup medal after India’s historic triumph England are banking on Wood’s pace, often above 150 km/h as part of their strategy to challenge Australia. When asked if there’s a backup plan in case the all-out pace plan fails, Wood joked, “Maybe bowl slower at 130 km/h? But that’s not in our nature. We always give 100 per cent, and we’ll do the same here.” Though Wood has been training hard, he admitted he’s not yet at full speed. England’s warm-up match against the Lions next week will help him test his match fitness. “I’ve been increasing the intensity bit by bit,” he said. “The practice game will help me push it more before the first Test.” England’s preparation has been lighter than usual, but Wood isn’t worried. He pointed to their win over India in Hyderabad as proof they can perform without many warm-up games. “I’d rather go in fresh than tired,” he said confidently. After months of training indoors in cold, damp conditions back home, Wood is glad to finally be bowling outdoors again. “It was boring bowling alone. Now, being in Australia, it feels real. The excitement is building.” As England prepare for the Ashes, Wood’s return brings a major boost. With his pace, energy, and determination, he’s ready to play a key role in England’s push to reclaim the urn.

Wood, known for his express pace, played in the 2021–22 Ashes, where he took 17 wickets, including a career-best 6 for 37 in Hobart. However, he missed the Perth Test back then due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Long before the Indian women’s cricket team lifted their first-ever ICC Women’s World Cup trophy in 2025, their journey was one of struggle, hardships and sheer passion. Hidden behind that triumphant moment is a story few know — of an actress and television presenter who became an unlikely saviour when no one else stood by the Women in Blue. That woman was Mandira Bedi — a name synonymous with breaking barriers in both entertainment and cricket broadcasting. Known for bringing glamour and energy to live cricket shows in the early 2000s, Mandira did something off-camera that changed the course of Indian women’s cricket forever.
When women’s cricket struggled to survive
Before 2006, the Indian women’s cricket team was not under the BCCI’s wing. It was managed by the Women’s Cricket Association of India (WCAI), a body that often struggled for basic funding. Players like Anjum Chopra, Mithali Raj, and Jhulan Goswami played purely for love of the game — often without salaries, proper travel, or even accommodation on tours. The situation hit rock bottom in 2003, when the team couldn’t afford airfare for a series in England. With no sponsors and little media attention, it seemed the tour would be cancelled. That’s when Mandira Bedi quietly stepped in.
Mandira Bedi’s silent sponsorship
While shooting an advertisement for Asmi Jewellery, Mandira learned about the women’s team’s situation. Without hesitation, she donated her entire endorsement fee from the campaign to the WCAI — enough to fund the team’s air tickets to England.“She shot a commercial for a famous diamond brand and gave the entire fee to help the girls travel,” Nutan Gavaskar, former WCAI secretary and sister of cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar was quoted as saying. “That money helped us arrange air tickets for India’s tour of England.” It wasn’t a one-time gesture. Between 2003 and 2005, Mandira used her connections in the industry to raise funds, convince brands to sponsor women’s cricket, and ensure the players could continue competing internationally. She even helped bring Asmi Jewellery on board as a sponsor for the team’s 2004 series against the West Indies — an example of advocacy and action. At a time when women’s cricket barely made headlines, Mandira’s involvement gave the sport credibility in the public eye. Her presence as one of the first female cricket anchors in India had already challenged stereotypes — now, her behind-the-scenes support helped keep the women’s game alive. “She didn’t do it for fame or publicity,” Nutan Gavaskar was quoted as saying in an interview. “Mandira never talked about her contribution. She simply wanted the girls to play.” Mandira’s actions came from a place of empathy. She knew what it meant to break into a male-dominated arena and face skepticism. Her silent generosity gave Indian women’s cricket the breath it needed before the BCCI finally took over in 2006. Years later, when the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian team lifted the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2025, Mandira expressed her pride through a simple Instagram caption: “You didn’t play for a nation — you moved it.” It was a fitting tribute from the woman who, two decades earlier, had moved mountains so that India’s women could play at all. Mandira Bedi wasn’t just a broadcaster or a celebrity — she was a silent patron, a pillar of strength, and a true unsung hero of the Indian women’s cricket.

WION Exclusive | Pratika Rawal finally gets her World Cup medal after India’s historic triumph

Australia women's skipper Alyssa Healy had expressed shock and disappointment after losing in the Women's World Cup 2025 semis against India and the feeling hasn't gone yet. Australia had posted 338 against India in the penultimate clash but India chased down the total - a world record in WODIs - to book a place in the final and then went on to win their maiden title. Australia, who were defending champions and seven-time world cup winners, had defeated India two times in the semis in the past.
Aussie skipper Healy still not over loss against India
"Obviously, I haven’t watched the final, but India got themselves over the line, which is really cool, and it’s great for the global game. So, from that perspective, it was an amazing experience, but obviously sitting here a little bit disappointed, and it’ll haunt me for a little while that one, but that’s ok,” Healy said on Willow Talk Cricket podcast with former men's wicketkeeper-batter Brad Haddin. Also Read - Unlucky in finals? The win against seven-time champions in the final definitely will boost India women's confidence for the future games, knowing that the seemingly invincible Aussies can be beaten, just like any other team.
